Mission & Aims of the Program
Fielding’s APA accredited Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program is strongly aligned with the university’s mission to create a more humane, just, and sustainable world, and the university’s values that include academic excellence, community, diversity, and social justice.
Consistent with these values, a core mission of our program is to foster the inclusion of students from under-represented populations. These populations include students living in small communities, rural, or remote locations of the United States, students currently in the military or spouses of military members, adult learners with families, and students whose ongoing participation in their current communities cannot be halted for doctoral study elsewhere. These are student populations who are often unable to enter the field through preparation at a traditional university campus, yet these are the future psychologists for which the discipline and profession have expressed an urgent need.
In addition, our program aims to graduate entry-level scholar-practitioner psychologists who bring social justice values to their work as licensed health service professionals. Consistent with this overarching aim, we have four specific aims for our students, which must be achieved by the time of graduation.
- Students will demonstrate doctoral-level discipline-specific knowledge that represents the scientific and theoretical knowledge areas of the discipline of psychology (i.e., history and systems of psychology and the affective, biological, cognitive, developmental, and social bases of behavior).
- Students will demonstrate doctoral-level conceptualization, evaluation, analysis, and integration of discipline-specific knowledge across the curriculum.
- Students will demonstrate doctoral-level ability to understand and critique research; design, conduct, analyze, and communicate theoretically informed research; and conduct research in a manner that is culturally sensitive and consistent with legal code and ethical standards, including the APA ethics code.
- Students will demonstrate doctoral-level competence in the profession-wide competencies, including conducting an evidence-based diagnosis, assessment, and psychotherapy; and applying theory and research to develop case conceptualizations, treatment plans, and interventions that are consistent with legal and ethical standards and individual and cultural diversity factors.
Serving adults, many of whom have trained or worked in the mental health field, our unique distributed learning model blends the best of face-to-face learning opportunities with digital formats.
Faculty are active scholars and practitioners with a wide variety of expertise, which allows us to offer specialized concentrations and training in a variety of therapeutic orientations.
Geographic Eligibility
The program only considers applicants who reside in the contiguous United States and Canada. The program is not available to those residing internationally (except Canada). Applicants from Alaska and Hawaii may be considered pending confirmation of their ability and resources to attend local professional development seminars in contiguous U.S. on a regular basis, access to acceptable practicum training sites, and ability to relocate for internship. (Contact [email protected] to be put in touch with the Program Director for consideration prior to applying.)
Due to state licensing requirements, graduates of the program are not eligible for licensure in Oklahoma. For licensure information on your particular state of interest, please visit our Professional Licensure page [CLICK HERE].

Best Online Doctorates In Psychology Of 2024
Updated: Mar 28, 2024, 12:13pm
Psychologists don’t just work one-on-one with patients to treat behavioral and mental health issues. Today, psychologists advise corporations, study cognitive science and the brain, coach athletes to peak performance and help students thrive in school.
In addition to clinical counseling, an online doctorate in psychology can lead to well-paying work in diverse fields like education, business, social services, nonprofit management and community organizing.
To help with your search, Forbes Advisor reviewed 43 programs and ranked eight schools that met our criteria. Each school demonstrates a commitment to student experience, outcomes, credibility and affordability. Programs include Ph.D.s, Psy.D.s and Ed.D.s, with specializations like leadership, community or educational psychology. Explore our recommendations below.

Our Methodology
We ranked eight accredited, nonprofit colleges offering online doctoral degrees in psychology in the U.S. using 15 data points in the categories of student experience, credibility, student outcomes and affordability. We pulled data for these categories from reliable resources such as the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System ; private, third-party data sources; and individual school and program websites.
Data is accurate as of February 2024. Note that because online doctorates are relatively uncommon, fewer schools meet our ranking standards at the doctoral level.
We scored schools based on the following metrics:
Student Experience:
- Student-to-faculty ratio
- Socioeconomic diversity
- Availability of online coursework
- Total number of graduate assistants
- More than 50% of graduate students enrolled in at least some distance education
Credibility:
- Fully accredited
- Programmatic accreditation status
- Nonprofit status
Student Outcomes:
- Overall graduation rate
- Median earnings 10 years after graduation
Affordability:
- In-state graduate student tuition
- In-state graduate student fees
- Alternative tuition plans offered
- Median federal student loan debt
- Student loan default rate
We listed all eight schools in the U.S. that met our ranking criteria.

While an online psychology doctoral degree has its upsides, it isn’t the right move for everyone. In light of the huge commitment of time and money—to say nothing of effort—think hard about factors like budget, scheduling and learning style.
Online doctoral programs often cost less than campus programs since they allow you to save on big-ticket expenses like housing and transportation. Plus, some state schools extend in-state tuition rates to all online learners, regardless of their state residency status.
Online learning provides flexibility to work around work and family obligations. However, some programs mix asynchronous lessons with synchronous events like discussion groups.
Remote learning works well for disciplined self-starters. But if you need the accountability and support that come with in-person learning, an online doctoral program might not be a good fit for you.
There are two kinds of accreditation to consider in online psychology doctoral programs: institutional and programmatic.
Institutional accreditation is given by bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). To receive federal financial aid, you must attend an accredited institution. Several institutions on this list have earned accreditation by regional agencies like SACSCOC or the Higher Learning Commission.
Programmatic accreditation proves that a degree has been vetted to meet certain academic standards. The primary accreditor for post-graduate psychology programs in the U.S. is the American Psychology Association (APA), which accredits Ph.D. and Pys.D. programs. APA accredits specific degrees, not departments. You can find programs using APA’s accredited programs search tool . WHAT
To confirm a college’s accreditation status, search CHEA’s directory .
Consider Your Future Goals
To choose the best program for you, think through your long-term career goals. This helps inform whether you should pursue a Psy.D. or Ph.D. and what kind of field experience you may need to complete.
Programs vary in their focus on clinical application of psychological principles versus research and classroom instruction. For example, William James College’s Pys.D. in leadership psychology allows learners to work an additional 150 practicum hours beyond the program requirement. The extra hands-on experience could help you prepare for more specialized psychology careers .
A degree from an APA-accredited program is required for some employment opportunities and, in some states, licensure. If you intend to become a licensed psychologist after graduation, make sure your program prepares you for this path.
Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options
The programs on this list vary greatly in terms of cost. On the high end, the Chicago School at Los Angeles charges $1,703 per credit. At $528 per credit, Keiser University-Ft. Lauderdale offers the cheapest option. Both programs require 60 credits, putting our range between about $31,000 and $102,000.
Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) to learn about financial aid opportunities. Other financing options to explore include assistantships, scholarships, grants and loans.
How long does it take to get a doctorate in psychology?
A psychology doctorate typically takes four to six years, but some programs can be completed in less time. In addition to coursework, programs generally require clinical or practicum hours and a dissertation.
Is it worth it to get a doctorate in psychology?
A doctorate in psychology is not easy to obtain, but it can help you land an in-demand job that tends to pay well. However, many people pursue this degree out of personal interest rather than a desire for financial gain.
Is a Psy.D. higher than a Ph.D.?
Both degrees concern the same subject matter, but a Psy.D. focuses on clinical practice, while a Ph.D. has more to do with scientific research. Ph.D., or Doctor of Philosophy , programs are more common and contain more sub-fields. A Psy.D., or Doctor of Psychology, focuses on preparing students to serve clients and patients.
Is a psychology doctorate hard?
Doctorate programs are generally difficult and take a long time to complete. The vast field of psychology features training in both the natural and social sciences. In addition to years of coursework, most psychology doctorate programs require supervised practicum hours and an original dissertation.

Students are required to apply for internship via the national match system offered by the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and participate in an approved internship. The internship may begin after the student has completed the courses listed under the first six semesters, completed the second year research project, passed the comprehensive examinations, and successfully defended the dissertation proposal. Typically, the dissertation is completed in the fourth year and the internship in the fifth year.
Evaluations
Ongoing annual evaluations of students will be conducted by the faculty using information submitted by practicum site supervisors, course instructors, and research mentors. Students will meet with the Program Director to receive feedback concerning these evaluations.
Research practicum
All first-, second- and third-year students participate in a research practicum of ongoing projects supervised by doctoral faculty members. The practicum requires approximately 8-10 hours a week. Research projects frequently culminate in the publication of articles in psychological journals and paper and poster presentations at various professional meetings, with students in the doctoral program participating as authors and presenters.
Forensic Track
An optional add-on forensic track is available to students in the Ph.D. program who fulfill the following additional requirements:
- Completion of at least one of the required clinical practicums at any point after the first year. This requirement can be satisfied through an NYNJDOT approved externship or similar placement meeting requirements of the track.
- Completion of at least two additional courses: PSYC7230 Forensic Assessment and Prediction and PSYC7235 Evaluating Criminal Responsibility and Competency.
- Completion of a dissertation on a forensic topic.
It should be noted that research opportunities in forensic psychology are available.
Forensic track courses may incur additional fees if they increase a student’s credit load for a given semester above the allowable flat fee level of 16.5 credits.
Students coming into the program without a Master’s degree may incur additional fees for the two courses mentioned above since they are above and beyond the required courses for the clinical doctoral program.
Completion of the forensic track will be noted on the student’s transcript.

Accreditation matters when earning an online doctoral degree in psychology. That’s because you’ll have a better chance at landing an internship during your doctoral program if you attend an accredited program.
What’s more, states require psychologists to graduate from an accredited program to apply for licensure.
Here’s how college accreditation works: Independent accrediting agencies evaluate colleges and universities. They research student learning outcomes, faculty qualifications, and academic standards.
Programs within a university can also apply for accreditation from specialized agencies dedicated to the field. You can look up accreditation for a school or program.
When researching Ph.D. programs in psychology, look for programs accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). These programs meet the highest standards for training psychologists.
While APA does not accredit online-only programs , it does accredit hybrid programs and Ph.D. programs with some online coursework. APA’s accredited program database provides more information on accredited doctoral programs in psychology.

An online doctorate in psychology generally costs anywhere from $50,000-$200,000.
Ultimately, how much you spend on your degree will depend on factors such as:

How to Become a Psychologist: 6-Step Guide
Becoming a psychologist requires years of graduate-level education and postdoctoral training. Here are the steps you’ll need to take to start your career as a psychologist.
Step 1: Get a Bachelor’s Degree
Your journey toward a career in psychology begins with a bachelor’s degree. You’ll need a bachelor’s to apply to graduate programs in psychology.
A psychology degree offers a strong foundation for graduate-level study. You can also choose a specialized degree like industrial-organizational psychology or opt for a degree in a related mental health field such as social work .
Many majors — including in the humanities, the social sciences, education, and human services — can prepare you for psychology careers.
Step 2: Choose a Specialization
What kind of psychologist do you want to become? Are you interested in counseling roles or positions in education? Are you drawn to research topics or clinical practice?
Choosing a specialization early can help you find the best program to reach your goals.
Common psychology specializations include:
- Clinical psychology
- Counseling psychology
- Forensic psychology
- Behavioral psychology
- Developmental psychology
- Industrial-organizational psychology
- School psychology
- Health psychology
Step 3: Compare Online Doctoral Degrees in Psychology
Next, research online doctoral programs. Some psychologists move straight from a bachelor’s degree into a doctoral program, whereas others earn a master’s in psychology to strengthen their skills before applying to an online psychology Ph.D. program.
When researching graduate psychology programs, make sure to check the university’s accreditation status and the program’s accreditation.
As you compare programs, check whether they offer a Ph.D. or a Psy.D. Both degrees are doctorates in psychology, but a Ph.D. emphasizes research while a Psy.D. emphasizes practice.
You can earn a psychologist license and qualify for most roles with either degree. That said, a Ph.D. generally leads to academic and research roles, whereas a Psy.D. leads to clinical roles.
Consider as well your budget for a doctorate. Costs will vary depending on the program. Look into fellowships, scholarships, and other forms of financial aid to lower costs.
Step 4: Earn a Doctorate in Psychology
Earning your doctorate in psychology takes a minimum of four years for a Psy.D. and up to seven years for a Ph.D.
During that time, you’ll take psychology courses and work closely with your faculty advisor to develop a dissertation project. You’ll also conduct research and gain clinical skills.
At the end of your online psychology Ph.D., you’ll defend your dissertation. Psy.D. programs may not require dissertation defense, but you will have to write one.
Common Courses in a Ph.D. in Psychology Online Program
- Advanced Qualitative Analysis
- Behavioral Assessment
- Clinical Practicum
- Developmental Psychology
- Ethics and Legal Issues
- Multivariate Statistics
- Psychobiology
- Psychopathology
- Survey Construction and Administration
Step 5: Fulfill Supervised Training Requirements
Before receiving your psychologist license, you’ll need to meet supervised training requirements.
Each state sets its own requirements, which you can meet during your doctorate or after graduating. For example, Washington state requires 3,300 hours of supervised experience, with the option to complete up to 1,500 hours after graduation.
Many psychologists complete this requirement as part of their doctoral program. Programs incorporate practicums, internships, and other supervised training opportunities. In some states, you can also meet supervised experience requirements through a postdoc or postgraduate internship.
Check the licensing requirements in your state for more information.
Step 6: Apply for Licensure
The final step to becoming a psychologist is to apply for a state license.
In many states, the Board of Psychology issues these licenses. Typically, you’ll need a doctorate in psychology from an accredited program, supervised experience, and passing scores on a licensure exam.
Aspiring psychologists in all states must take the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). You may have to take additional exams, depending on what state you live in. For example, most states require a state jurisprudence exam, which tests applicants on their knowledge of state laws applicable to psychology practice.
Exam and licensure costs vary by state. In New York, you’ll pay $294 for your initial license , while in Pennsylvania it costs $105 for an initial license and $300 to renew your license.
Q&A With a Real Psychologist and a Psychology Student
Q: why did you decide to pursue a career in psychology.
“I have always had a strong passion for helping others, and this drive led me to this field. It was after working as a behavior specialist doing in-home behavioral therapy that solidified my decision to pursue a career in psychology.”
“I wanted to ease people’s suffering and make sure there were supports in place for those who needed them. Moreover, I had negative experiences with the mental health system as an adolescent, and I wanted to ensure that those experiences weren’t repeated for other people.”
Q: In your opinion, what is the value of earning a doctorate in psychology?
“You are in a position to help individuals and our larger society. Along with providing direct treatment, you have credentials that allow you to advocate for systematic changes. You can advocate in a variety of ways, such as through assessments, creating community-based programs, and activism in legal arenas.”
“If I chose to do a master’s program, I don’t believe I would have had as many opportunities, and master’s-level clinicians tend to not make as much as doctorate-level clinicians/providers.”
Q: Why did you choose to earn a Psy.D. instead of a Ph.D. in psychology?
“I chose a Psy.D. program as opposed to a Ph.D. as my program really emphasizes putting what we learn in classes to practice in our practicum sites. I also did not want to attend a program so heavily focused on research.”
“I didn’t just look at program types, but also at the faculty I wanted to work with. Both types of programs can offer similar training experiences, but having the right mentor whose research or interests aligns with yours is a key part of a successful graduate school experience.”
Q: What is something that surprised you about your psychology program or the field of psychology?
“How much we don’t know! While the field is improving on its ability to replicate research and evaluate treatment effectiveness, we don’t fully understand how and why individuals react, or don’t react, to popular interventions.”
“As a trainee, I was shocked to see what goes into being a great practitioner and having only a fraction of the work put in get rewarded. This is a selfless job and career, and the needs of those we help must always be a priority.”
Q: What is your biggest piece of advice to those who want to become psychologists?
“Listen to the people who come to you for assistance and be mindful of social and political influences on mental wellness. Many individuals will not benefit from standardized interventions, particularly those from historically oppressed communities. We need to listen when people tell us what is, or is not, working for them and be open to other ways of healing.”
“Impostor syndrome is REAL! There will be many times in your training that you feel like you don’t belong or that you’re not as good as those around you, but this is not true! You belong in this field and are just as good as anyone around you — just don’t forget the reasons why you’re here!”

Sarah Budd, PsyD, Gambit Coaching & Consulting
Mental health issues are at an all-time high in the United States. Statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Health show that one in five U.S. adults experience mental illness. These numbers increased substantially due to isolation and job loss during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the wake of the global pandemic, the counseling field has seen an unprecedented surge in demand, highlighting the critical need for highly skilled practitioners. According to a report by the American Psychological Association (APA), psychologists have experienced a significant increase in workload since the onset of COVID-19, underscoring the urgent requirement for advanced expertise in mental health care. This data presents a compelling case for pursuing a PhD in counseling, as the current landscape not only offers an opportunity to impact society’s well-being profoundly but also promises a dynamic and rewarding career path for those equipped with the highest level of academic and practical proficiency in psychology.
While many mental health positions in counseling, social work, or other related fields require a bachelor’s or master’s degree, earning a doctoral degree in counseling or psychology can position someone to deepen their clinical and research experience or lead teams of mental health professionals to treat more patients.
A commonly asked question is: what is the difference between counseling and psychology? While the two fields share the purpose of helping individuals and families navigate difficult emotional situations or disorders, two significant differences between the two careers are the types of research performed and the types of patients seen.
Psychologists with doctoral degrees are often trained in quantitative (objective and countable) research methods and are positioned to help people with serious mental illnesses. On the other hand, counselors with doctoral degrees are trained in qualitative (subjective and observable) research methods and often see patients with short- to long-term adjustment disorders. With a doctoral degree, both psychologists and counselors are positioned to teach in universities, lead cutting-edge research teams, and lead teams of mental health professionals.
So what is required to apply for a doctoral degree in counseling or psychology? Master’s degree holders in two-year counseling or psychology can continue their studies through a doctoral program which typically takes three to seven years and requires extensive research, clinical work, and writing a dissertation. While there are several online doctoral degree programs available in counseling, a few online doctoral programs in psychology are available to serve the education needs of those who want to earn a degree while working full-time or attending to family responsibilities.
To match pace with national mental health needs, the occupational outlook for doctoral degree holders in counseling and psychology is trending upward. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS 2023), between 2022 and 2032, openings for psychologists are projected to grow by 6 percent nationally, a rate that is as fast as the national average for all occupations. In addition, the BLS shows the median annual salary for psychologists is $85,330 in 2023, which includes professionals with master’s and doctoral degrees.

Meet the Expert: Sarah Budd, PsyD
Dr. Sarah Budd is an organizational psychologist specializing in helping teams and organizations increase their effectiveness. She is an executive and leadership coach (ICF PCC), certified in CliftonStrengths, Hogan Assessments, Kantor Structural Dynamics, and Whole Person Coaching.
Dr. Budd holds a master’s in organizational psychology and a PsyD in leadership psychology. Her background is in management operations. She is a coach, facilitator, and principal for Gambit Coaching & Consulting and adjunct faculty for William James College. She has created and led numerous workshops from one hour to three days, emphasizing a collaborative, customized, action-oriented approach. She serves on the board of Oregon’s Organization Development Network. In the evenings and weekends, she enjoys spending time with her husband, four children, two chickens, and one dog.
CounselingSchools.com: How has earning a doctoral degree in counseling or psychology enhanced your career?
Dr. Budd: Earning a PsyD allowed me to expand the ways I help my clients. The degree significantly enhanced my ability to navigate the complex challenges that our leaders face in today’s world, equipped me with a wealth of practical tools, and fostered my personal growth. It’s given me a deep referral network in fellow students, supervisors, and professors. In short, earning this degree not only gave me the necessary knowledge but it also gave me the building blocks for my career.
CounselingSchools.com: What is one piece of advice you would give to a prospective doctoral student in counseling or psychology?
Dr. Budd: First, it’s important to find a program that aligns with your long-term goals. As a leadership psychologist, we spend time helping leaders identify their goals and chart out their course toward them. Your doctoral program is no different. Knowing my long-term goal helped me sift through the various programs to find the one with coursework that was a great match for me. It’s well worth your time to find a program where you’ll be engaged in learning what truly interests you, as this will pave the way for your career contribution.
Second, set yourself up for success. These programs are a major, major commitment. If you’re like me and completed your doctorate while working and raising a family, your time will be stretched very thin. Plan accordingly. For some of us, that means waiting for the timing to be right (whether that’s kids growing a little older or saving money first); for others, that means identifying what you need to keep in your life because it makes you feel like a balanced person, and what can wait for your degree to be complete before you pick it up again. These programs will require sacrifice on our part—allow yourself to be the one who chooses what the sacrifice will look like because you’ve planned for it.
Types of Doctoral Programs in Counseling and Psychology
When it comes to doctoral degrees, there are several programs in counseling. Aspiring psychologists searching for PhD programs should know there are two accrediting organizations. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredits master’s and doctoral degrees in counseling, and the American Psychological Association (APA) accredits doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral residency programs in psychology.
To choose the best program, applicants are advised to consider their future career goals and interests. In general, PhD programs in counseling prepare graduates to focus on patient adjustment issues such as anxiety, depression, couples counseling, behavior disorders, and substance abuse. By comparison, PhD programs in psychology may also see patients or specialize in clinical research and administer psychological assessments measuring intelligence, emotional relation, or neurological capabilities.
Here are two lists of PhD programs in counseling and psychology included in CACREP- and APA-accredited programs.
CACREP-accredited PhD Programs in Counseling
- EdD in Counselor Education and Supervision : This is a practical degree program focusing on applying solutions to mental health problems from an administrative or teaching role; a clinical internship may not be required.
- PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision : This is designed for those who want to work in theoretical, clinical, teaching, and leadership roles; a clinical internship is typically required.
It is worth noting that as of 2013, new university teaching faculty members in CACREP-accredited programs must have a doctoral degree from a CACREP-accredited program to be eligible for employment. Additionally, licensure requirements vary by position and state requirements, and earning a doctoral degree from a CACREP-accredited program prepares candidates for the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE) to become a licensed counselor.
APA-accredited PhD Programs in Psychology
- PhD in Counseling Psychology : This is a foundational degree that leads to various positions seeing patients in clinical practices, research, teaching, and supervisory roles in private or public healthcare facilities.
- PhD in Psychology : This is a general degree program that can be broad or specific in its focus and includes clinical and research components; a one-year internship may be required.
- PhD in School Psychology : This school counseling degree program prepares future school psychologists to work with youth and behavioral issues that interfere with learning and socialization.
- PsyD in Counseling Psychology : Students in PsyD programs focus on client interaction, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment and learn practical applications of research-based psychology practices; a one-year internship may be required.
Online Counseling and Psychology Doctoral Program Accreditation
As mentioned above, master’s and doctoral counseling degree programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). There are more than 900 CACREP-accredited programs in the United States. Programs demonstrate their academic rigor through a two-part process of self and peer assessment and must prove that their mission, curriculum, and teaching meet high standards of excellence.
In addition, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognizes CACREP as an accrediting body, and nine of the 86 CACREP-accredited PhD programs in counseling are offered through online programs.
As for psychology, the American Psychological Association (APA) currently does not accredit any online doctoral programs. Therefore, the APA urges students wishing to pursue an online doctoral degree in psychology to seek online PhD programs in psychology that hold regional or national accreditation through the U.S. Department of Education or an accrediting body approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
Typical Admissions Requirements for Doctoral Programs in Counseling and Psychology

Counseling programs accredited by CACREP include a supervised clinical hours component to prepare students to work one-on-one with patients. CACREP requires students to complete skill development preparation before being eligible for supervised clinical experience.
A minimum of 700 hours of supervised experience is required, and hours are divided into two categories: practicum and internship. Practicum hours must total 100, and at least 40 of those hours must be in direct service with clients.
As for internship hours, the minimum requirement is 600 hours, of which students must spend 240 in direct service with clients. CACREP defines direct service hours as ”the supervised use of counseling, consultation, or related professional skills with actual clients (can be individuals, couples, families, or groups) to foster social, cognitive, behavioral, and affective change.” The organization does not count tasks in administration and observation as direct service hours.
As for APA-accredited doctoral programs in psychology, students are encouraged to keep well-documented records of their supervised clinical hours. Depending on the state where licensure is sought, a psychologist must earn 1,500 to 6,000 supervised clinical hours.
Licensure requirements vary by state, and students are advised to carefully research the number of supervised hours required for each state listed on the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) website.

Jobs for PhDs & PsyDs in Counseling or Psychology
With a PhD in counseling or psychology, graduates have expanded access to career opportunities in teaching, administration, and clinical settings. Here are three jobs for graduates of counseling and psychology doctoral programs.
Become a Community Mental Health Counselor
After a community is impacted by trauma such as a natural disaster, terrorist attack, or war, a community mental health counselor steps in to help communities process their losses.
Through speaking with individuals and groups after a disaster, community mental health counselors, also known as crisis counselors , serve as outreach personnel in community and civic organizations. In addition, a community mental health counselor can be a pivotal part of the reunification and future development of neighborhoods, families, and organizations by providing mental and emotional support to community members after a community disaster.
Become a Forensic Psychologist
When a crime is committed, much attention is given to the perpetrator. The role of a forensic psychologist is to determine the motive of a specific or often-occurring crime.
Forensic psychologists perform interdisciplinary work that spans criminal justice, law, and psychology. For example, forensic psychologists can be pivotal in crime prevention by analyzing criminal risk factors and serving in court-appointed rehabilitation roles for convicted criminals by questioning alleged criminals, interviewing crime-scene witnesses, and investigating actual crime scenes.
Become a Military, Army, or Veteran Counselor
Returning military veterans often find reentry to civilian life difficult for various reasons. Veterans’ counselors help military vets mentally process their experiences, and services are available to veterans who have been honorably or generally discharged.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI 2020) estimates that one in four active-duty members experiences signs of mental illness, with the top three afflictions being post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and traumatic brain injury. Veterans’ counselors can help military veterans develop coping skills at one of the 170 veteran affairs (VA) medical centers and outpatient clinics located throughout the United States.

Choosing a Program
Why apa accreditation should factor into your decision.
- Provides an educational and scientific foundation on which to build a career in psychology, providing service to the public.
- May help qualify you for employment opportunities in settings that require completion of an accredited program.
- Facilitates licensure in states that require candidates to either have a degree from an APA-accredited doctoral program.
FAQs about Choosing a Program
What does it mean when a program is not accredited.
Accreditation is a voluntary process, as programs choose whether and when to apply for initial accreditation. The Commission on Accreditation (CoA) has no basis for evaluating programs that have not applied. View the current list of applicant programs for initial accreditation.
When accreditation is denied or revoked, that means that the program has been deemed inconsistent with the Standards of Accreditation in Health Service Psychology (SoA). When the CoA denies or revokes accreditation, those programs are publicly listed as such .
What if I want to study psychology at the undergraduate or master’s level?
The APA Commission on Accreditation only accredits programs at the doctoral level. There are no APA-accredited bachelor’s or master’s programs.
If you have an interest in studying psychology at the undergraduate level, you may want to visit the website of the APA Office of Precollege and Undergraduate Education .
If you would like to obtain your master’s degree in psychology or would like general information on graduate school, please visit the websites of the APA Office of Graduate Education and Training and the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students .
Are programs outside the United States accredited?
Currently, the accrediting authority of the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) extends to programs in the United States and its territories. The CoA currently accredits several programs in Puerto Rico. In order to be eligible for accreditation by the APA, doctoral programs must be sponsored by an institution of higher education accredited by a nationally recognized regional accrediting body in the United States.
As of Sept. 1, 2015 the APA CoA no longer accredits programs in Canada, in accordance with the revised agreement between the APA and the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). Accreditation of programs in Canada are handled solely by the CPA. This agreement follows several years of discussion and surveys, a six-month period of public comment in 2004-2005, and approval by the APA Council of Representatives in 2007.
The CoA does not evaluate foreign degrees. Please contact the appropriate state licensing body for more information on this issue.
Will I have trouble getting a job or becoming licensed if I don't go to an accredited program?
This depends on your own career objectives and the law in the state(s) in which you wish to practice. In the United States, each state makes its own laws regarding the educational requirements for licensure of psychologists. If you wish to pursue licensure, it is important to know that some states require that students have a degree from an APA-accredited program. You should check with the licensing body in the state(s) in which you intend to practice (visit the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards website ).
In addition, some agencies of the federal government only hire graduates of APA-accredited programs. If you wish to work for such an agency, please contact them directly for further information on hiring requirements.
Which are the best psychology programs? How can I decide which psychology program to attend?
The Commission on Accreditation (CoA) accredits psychology programs; it does not provide qualitative information about programs, nor does it compare or "rank" them. The decision about what program is "best" is up to the individual student.
The CoA encourages students to look for a program that meets both their professional and personal goals. Ask practical questions such as: Does the program offer the type of training I want? Can I live here? Is it affordable? Is the institution too big/small? Does the program appear to have a faculty and staff with whom I can work? Talk to the faculty, students, and alumni about your questions, concerns and about your specific interests.
You can also ask programs about their outcomes, such as the types of jobs their graduates obtain. All APA-accredited programs are required to provide prospective students/trainees with data (See Implementing Regulations C-26 D, C-27 I, and C-23 P for details).
How can I verify which programs are accredited?
Complete listings are available on request from the Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation. In addition, a search tool that includes all current accredited programs is available online. This listing is for informational purposes only and should not be used for official credential review, as it does not include a full historical record.
This website also provides a current list of programs applying for initial accreditation in order to allow for third-party comment. Please contact programs directly to find out whether they have plans to apply for accreditation in the future.
Are there any accredited programs that are offered online?
At this time there are no APA-accredited programs available that ONLY use online methods of instruction. Some programs may offer courses online, or utilize some nontraditional/distance education methods, but the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) does not maintain information on the courses offered, the modality of such courses or which programs might be offering them. All accredited programs must meet all provisions of the Standards of Accreditation (SoA), regardless of the methods of instruction they may use.
When can I say I am a graduate of an accredited program?
The initial date of accreditation (for applicant programs that become accredited) will be the final day of the site visit preceding the CoA's final accreditation decision.
Students who are in the program on that date and subsequently complete the program are considered to be graduates of an accredited program, provided, of course, that the program maintains an accredited status through the date of the students' graduation. Accreditation is not retroactive.

A doctoral degree in counseling or therapy can equip you to help others work through their mental health or interpersonal struggles, and it can prepare you for leadership roles in counseling organizations.
With this degree, you can pursue careers in social work, private practice, or program administration. You may also tailor your education with concentrations like Counselor Education and Supervision, Art Therapy, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Addiction Counseling.
Coursework often covers topics like group and individual counseling, trauma response, ethical behavior, and diversity. Some universities require that you already be licensed as a counselor in your state before beginning their programs.
A PhD in Counseling can allow you to pursue a career as a college or university educator, an advanced counselor who trains and leads others, or a primary researcher for innovative studies.
If you’re currently a counselor and training other counselors or managing a counseling program are career goals of yours, a PhD in Counseling can make those goals a reality.
Criminal Justice & Homeland Security Doctorate Degrees
With a doctorate in criminal justice or homeland security, you can pursue a career in law enforcement, government, or private practice.
Your chosen career may provide opportunities to protect your community, conduct investigations, work with criminals, or collect intelligence. Often, doctoral graduates gain leadership positions, such as serving as a chief of police.
In pursuit of this doctoral degree, you’ll take classes in psychology, emergency and disaster situations, the justice system, and victimology.
Your program may offer concentrations like Terrorism, Criminology, Information Assurance, Security, or Emergency Management.
Doctorate in Education
Whether you want to teach in a classroom, serve in school administration, provide teacher support, or equip the next generation of instructors, a doctorate in education can help you achieve your goals.
Many graduates remain in the classroom and take on leadership roles. Others become principals, superintendents, professors, policymakers, curriculum specialists, or educational consultants.
While earning this degree, you’ll take classes in curriculum development, organizational leadership, student assessment, and education research. You could select an EdD concentration in an area like Special Education, Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, or Early Childhood Education.
A PhD in Education and an EdD are quite similar degrees. Both programs focus on education and can prepare you for leadership roles. PhD programs, however, are more research-based.
A PhD can be a better match for someone looking for a career in research, publishing, or teaching at the university level. It focuses less on application than an Ed.D., but the same types of careers are possible with either of these two degrees.
In terms of time to completion, the shortest program option is usually the EdD because there’s often no dissertation required.
Doctorate in Finance
People with strong math and money skills can be good candidates for pursuing a doctoral degree in finance. Many doctoral graduates take leadership positions with investment firms, large banks, hedge funds, universities, or government agencies. Some earn CEO or other C-suite roles.
A doctorate in finance can even prepare you for an international career. As you study for your degree, you’ll take classes in market analysis, global markets, financial planning, theories of finance, taxation, and leadership.
You can also choose to prepare for leadership roles in this field by pursuing a DBA with a concentration in Finance.
Doctorate in Healthcare Administration
Earning a doctoral degree in the field of healthcare administration can prepare you for leadership positions in healthcare and medical settings. With it, you can work in hospitals, nursing homes, medical records companies, political think tanks, government agencies, or universities.
In this discipline, you’ll take classes on global health, business, law and policies, finance, and organizational leadership. Many DHA programs offer concentrations like Public Health, Leadership, and Health Policy.
An alternative academic path is earning a DBA with a concentration in Healthcare Administration, which can offer a shorter route to a doctorate when no dissertation is required.
Doctorate in Human Services
Earning a doctorate in human services can prepare you for leadership positions in organizations that provide services and assistance for various groups of people. You may work in schools, clinics, community outreach programs, or non-profit organizations.
Some people who pursue this degree are licensed counselors who want to serve in a leadership capacity in a mental health practice. Others desire teaching positions in human services at the university level.
Common topics of study for this degree include grant writing, leadership, communication, financial management, and ethics. Some of the concentration options are Mental Health, Gerontology, Marriage and Family, and Leadership and Management.
A PhD in Human Services can prepare you for leadership positions or help you become a policymaker in public and human services.
A PhD in Human Services is a flexible degree. If you have an undergraduate or master’s degree in public service, including social services, child welfare, criminal justice, or healthcare, you may find this degree interesting.
Doctorate in Information Systems / Technology
Companies and organizations rely on systems to keep their data and records safe and accessible. To be at the forefront of this field, consider a doctorate in information technology.
With this degree, you can pursue work as a C-suite executive, a director in a tech department, a consultant, a leader in a government agency, or a strategist. You could also be well-poised to open your own company.
Your classes will equip you with knowledge about data collection and analysis, threat and risk management, policy-making, strategic planning, and research.
Doctorate in Management / Leadership
If you want to hold one of the highest roles in an organization, then earning a doctoral degree in management may be in order. Some with this degree become C-suite executives, such as chief operating officers. Others take the helm of school districts or universities or accept teaching or research roles in higher education.
While earning this doctorate, you will study leadership, ethics, consulting, decision-making, innovation, and research. Many students pursue concentrations in Technology, Homeland Security, Non-Profit Organizations, or Healthcare.
Alternatively, some schools offer DBA programs with Management concentrations. This often adds more flexibility and can be the shorter option when compared to a PhD, which usually requires a dissertation.
Ministry (D.Min.) or Theology Doctorate Programs
You can take your religious education to the next level with a doctorate in ministry or theology. After earning this degree, you can choose to put your education into practice in church, parachurch, counseling, or chaplaincy positions.
Coursework for this degree typically helps students grow not only academically, but also spiritually. Topics covered include leadership, spiritual disciplines, evangelism, social justice, and teaching methods.
Some doctoral candidates pursue a specialization. Options include Counseling, Worship, Chaplaincy, Spiritual Disciplines, and Urban Ministry.
A career as a professor is a possibility with this degree, or you could become a missionary leader or lead pastor at a church.
Many universities require students to hold professional ministry positions before admitting them into their programs.
Doctorate in Nursing (Doctor of Nursing Practice)
The top-educated nurses have their doctoral degrees in nursing practice. With this degree, you can continue offering direct patient care. For example, you might work as a specialty nurse in a clinic. You could also use your degree as a care coordinator, manager of a nursing team, policymaker, or nurse educator.
For RNs (Registered Nurses) who want to teach and train other nurses in academic settings, a PhD in Nursing is the best doctorate-level nursing degree to pursue. A PhD in Nursing can also prepare you for a career in research as a nursing scientist.
Coursework for this degree includes classes on information technology, finance, organizational leadership, safety, and healthcare law. Keep in mind that a doctoral degree in nursing is a terminal degree in the field and will not qualify you for a position as a physician.
DNP programs have gained a lot of popularity over the years and are designed for RNs who seek advancement while remaining practicing nurses.
Earning a DNP can prepare you for leadership careers in the nursing industry. It will teach you how to advocate for and make policies, manage and direct nursing programs, and ensure communities offer the best healthcare to citizens who need it the most.
Doctorate in Public Administration
Whether you want to work in a government agency or would prefer a position with a related organization, a doctorate in public administration can help you achieve your goals.
People with this doctoral degree often serve as politicians, lobbyists, non-profit directors, grant writers, administrators, or government affairs directors. If you want to go into government or politics, you could work at the local, state, or national level.
In this field, you’ll study human resources, public policy, budgeting, ethics, organizational leadership, and decision-making.
PhD in Public Health
With a doctoral degree in public health, you could choose to conduct research in the fields of epidemiology, environmental science, clinical trials, or academia.
Instead, you could choose to pursue leadership roles in public health as a safety engineer, a clinic manager, or an executive of a hospital system.
Classes for this degree cover health equity, data analysis, biostatistics, and healthcare policy. Concentrations are available at many universities. Common options include Health Education, Leadership, and Laboratory Science.
PhD in Public Policy
If you want to have a hand in creating or modifying the policies that shape people’s lives and communities, then a doctoral program in public policy can provide the education that you need. Graduates often work for government agencies, universities, think tanks, and various institutions.
While earning this degree, you’ll study ethics, decision-making, research, leadership, and cultural diversity. You’ll also practice identifying problems, gathering valuable data, and creating effective solutions.
You may focus on Urban Policy, Health Policy, Financial Management, or other areas of specialization.
Ph.D. in Psychology
A doctoral degree in psychology can help you understand how people think and the influence that thought has on behavior. Many people pursue this degree because they want to work as licensed clinical psychologists in schools, private practices, hospitals, or organizational settings.
Coursework for this degree covers counseling theories, psychopathology, culture, motivation and behavior, and cognition.
Programs leading to licensure typically require a lengthy supervised practicum.
What is the Difference Between a PhD and a Doctorate?
A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, is just one type of doctorate, of which there are many.
Common doctorate degrees include:
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
- Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
- Doctor of Education (EdD)
- Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
- Doctor of Social Work (DSW)
Although the PhD is just one type of doctorate, it does have one distinguishing feature: the dissertation requirement. Nearly every PhD program requires adding to your field’s body of knowledge by performing original research on an approved topic of interest.
So, if you’re looking for fast-track doctoral programs, professional doctorates are generally a better choice.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Doctorate?
The length of time it takes to complete your doctorate will depend on the university and the type of doctoral program you attend.
On average, it takes 3 to 5 years to earn a doctorate.
The answers to the following questions can significantly impact completion time:
- Does the doctorate require a dissertation?
- How many classes can you take at one time?
- Are you transferring any credits into the program?
- How many weeks long are your classes?
- Is there a residency requirement?
- Is there a professional internship requirement?
As you can see, the best answer we can give you is: it depends.
To give you a ballpark, if you are working toward a professional doctorate (DBA, EdD, PsyD, etc.) and there is no dissertation requirement, you should be able to complete your program in about 2 to 3 years. Some people may be able to complete it in less time, and some may take longer. This is simply an average.
The dissertation requirement of Ph.D. programs can significantly impact your completion time. Generally speaking, it takes most doctoral students 3 to 5 years to complete a Ph.D.
What’s the Quickest Way to Earn a Doctorate Degree?
Just like accelerated online master’s programs , the shortest path to a doctorate will vary depending on your background, the program selected, and the university’s requirements.
The time it takes to complete a doctoral program online varies widely by university. For some universities, 3-year PhD programs are the norm. The official timeline on most university websites is about 3 – 5 years to complete a doctoral degree, but that’s just a general guideline.
If you are looking for the shortest PhD programs, you’ll want to select a program that does not require a dissertation. Dissertations are notorious for taking 2+ years to complete beyond the actual course requirements.
The following doctoral programs do not always require a dissertation: EdD, PsyD, DBA, DPA, and similar professional degrees. Most PhD programs require a dissertation (which means they’ll take longer to complete).
Another way to speed up your degree is by enrolling at a university that offers accelerated (8-week) doctoral courses. Since the courses take half the time to complete, you can finish your studies in less time.
Finally, you’ll want to pick a program that requires fewer credit hours. For example, one university may require 64 credit hours for an EdD while another may only require 42 credits. When looking for the shortest doctorate programs, you’ll want to examine the credit hour requirements closely.
This is also a great way to find the cheapest online doctoral programs. Generally, you’ll pay less tuition if you don’t need as many credit hours for program completion.
Are There Any One-Year Online Doctoral Programs?
When exploring the fastest route to a doctorate, it’s important to understand the available options and their typical timelines.
While some fast track schools offer the possibility of finishing a professional doctorate in 12 to 18 months, most accredited universities generally promote their doctorate programs as taking 3 or more years to complete.
These are some things to consider when looking for a faster doctoral program:
- Standard PhD duration : The usual time frame for completing a PhD is about 3 to 5 years. Occasionally, you might come across a 2-year PhD program, but these programs are quite rare.
- Other career-focused doctorates
- Select an online program with fewer credit hours required.
- Enroll in accelerated online courses , often structured as 8-week classes.
- Consider no-dissertation programs
- Look for programs that don’t require a GRE for admission.
- Capstone project as an alternative : Consider programs requiring a capstone project instead of a traditional dissertation. Capstone projects require research but generally take less time to complete than dissertations.
So, while 1-year online doctorate programs are not commonly available, especially from accredited institutions, these strategies can help you find a doctorate program that can be completed in a significantly shorter time.
Do All PhD Programs Require Students to Complete a Dissertation?
PhD programs usually require dissertations, but professional doctorates, such as a Doctor of Business Administration or Doctor of Education, generally do not require dissertations. Instead, they typically require capstone projects.
What Is the Fastest PhD Program Available?
The fastest PhDs available will be those that require 30 credit hours or less to complete. Once you’ve selected the fastest online degree that requires fewer credit hours than the norm, try to narrow your list further by selecting a university with accelerated PhD classes, which generally only take 8 weeks to complete.
If a PhD is not absolutely necessary, you will likely find it easier to find a professional doctorate program that meets these criteria, and it will likely not require a dissertation.
Having to fulfill a dissertation requirement can significantly increase the time it takes to complete your degree.
If speed is the most important factor, then a professional or applied doctorate, such as an online Doctor of Business Administration, Doctor of Psychology, or Doctorate of Education, will likely be the fastest option.
Looking for the Fastest Doctorate Programs?
When looking for the fastest doctorate degrees available, the first thing to consider is how much you’re willing to compromise in the name of speed.
Yes, there are accredited online doctoral programs that can be completed in less time than traditional, campus-based programs. The key is finding the shortest doctoral program offering the exact studies you seek.
In your search for efficiency, focusing on programs with short completion times and fewer course requirements can be a strategic choice.
Choosing a fast-track online doctorate program with minimal required courses, accelerated online classes, and no dissertation requirements can be a smart move toward efficiently achieving your academic goals. We invite you to start exploring accredited programs today with our program finder below.

You are here, innovative learning analytics online master’s program advances education.
Artificial intelligence and data analytics are revolutionizing education — from traditional K–12 classrooms to advanced research labs — and Penn GSE’s Learning Analytics online M.S.Ed. program is perfectly timed to meet this growing demand. The program equips aspiring data scientists and educators with the skills to significantly impact various educational sectors, including schools, educational technology, and policymaking.
The Learning Analytics program is designed for part-time and full-time students to develop measurement, analysis, and predictive modeling expertise. Students will also master advanced technologies such as generative AI, machine learning, and intelligent instruction and tutoring.
Penn GSE Professor Ryan Baker , who also serves as the Penn Center for Learning Analytics director, says the program offers wide applications across the education sector. For instance, predictive analytics can help schools and districts identify students at risk for dropping out, enabling timely interventions. An ed-tech company can also use learning analytics to develop adaptive learning programs that tailor content to individual students’ needs, or a university can deploy data to analyze its curriculum resources.
“Our goal is to get people with methodological tools, and also [with] the understanding of how to do … the real work in ways that are fair and don’t promote bias and don’t violate privacy,” Baker said. “There are a ton of potential applications.”
With entry points in both the fall and spring, the program allows students to tailor their studies to fit their schedules, enabling them to apply their knowledge in their current roles immediately.
The program enrolled 23 students in its first year, and a second-year cohort started in August. Students tune in from across the U.S., East Asia, and Europe.
Baker said most students have worked in education in schools, policy, or government and want to burnish their data and contemporary analytics skills. They don’t need a computer science degree to participate, although Python, a high-level programming language, is necessary.
Next year, the program will be named “Learning Analytics and Artificial Intelligence” and expand the focus on generative AI.
Baker said Penn GSE’s program is a lab for new technologies. Students use intelligent tutor-based assignments, video discussion tools, and an AI assistant called JeepyTA that answers questions and gives real-time feedback as they work through ideas and assignments. There’s even a video discussion tool where students have conversations moderated by a video version of Baker.
Baker said the program’s strengths are innovation and research.
“The capacity of our faculty is outstanding, and we’re also very pedagogically experimental,” Baker said. “We’re not just doing lectures and programming assignments. We aren’t just teaching about learning analytics and artificial intelligence in education; we are actually using them to improve the program.”
Learning Analytics students say their cohorts are tight-knit, and Penn GSE professors are accessible and supportive.
“The program may be online, but the experience has been personal,” said Cesar Flores.
Flores didn’t set out to work in education or technology. After college, he joined the family grocery business. He worked for a grocery brokerage firm, where he experimented with a new data analytics program and quickly became a one-person analytics department.
Intrigued, Flores returned to school for a master’s in applied data sciences and worked as an adjunct professor in data analytics at Lone Star College. After joining a Dallas-based educational nonprofit, he applied to Penn GSE’s program to combine his passions for technology and education and use data to advance education.
“I see technology as a tool that can help close the educational learning gap between students in economically disadvantaged communities and those who do not come from such communities,” Flores said.
Students from across the Penn community can take individual courses. Mariana Riestra enrolled in Baker’s Big Data, Education, and Society class to complement her International Educational Development program and her job in alumni relations at Penn GSE.
“Learning analytics plays an important role in maintaining a student-centered approach toward education through measuring learning growth and outcomes,” Riestra said.
Another student, Lemar White, attends classes from Maryland, where he works for Google as the head of inclusive learning and development. White holds an MBA from Texas A&M University-Commerce and an Ed.D. from Northeastern University. He enrolled in Penn GSE’s program to burnish his data science expertise.
“I wanted to gain the knowledge and skill set to use data effectively to make decisions about future learning experiences and learning design for Googlers,” White said.
For his part, Baker envisions the program growing to hundreds of students learning data analytics and advanced methods for the greater good of education.
“I want to expand the pool of people using these methods well to impact kids and adult learners,” Baker said.
