A PhD candidate may also be expected to hold a Master’s degree , however, this does not mean you must have one, as it is still possible to enrol into a PhD without a Master’s .

Self-funded courses may sometimes be more relaxed in relation to entry requirements . It may be possible to be accepted onto a self-funded PhD programme with lower grades, though these students typically demonstrate their suitability for the role through professional work experience.

Whilst a distance learning project is possible , most PhD candidates will carry out their research over at least three years based at their university, with regular contact with two academic supervisors (primary and secondary). This is particularly the case for lab-based projects, however, some PhD projects require spending time on-site away from university (e.g. at a specialist research lab or at a collaborating institution abroad).

The supervisor is the main point of contact through the duration of a PhD – but remember: they are there to mentor, not to teach, or do it for you . It will be your responsibility to plan, execute and monitor your own work as well as to identify gaps in your own knowledge and address them.

The second year (and prehapse some of your third year) is when you work on your research. What Can I Do After a PhD?

One of the most desirable postdoctoral fields is working within independent Research and Development (R&D) labs and new emerging companies. Both industries, especially R&D labs, have dedicated groups of PhD graduates who lead research activities, design new products and take part in crucial strategic meetings. Not only is this a stimulating line of work, but the average salaries in R&D labs and emerging start-ups are lucrative. In comparison, an undergraduate with five years of experience within their given field will, on average, likely earn less than a new PhD graduate taking on a R&D position.

It’s a common misunderstanding that PhDs only opens the door for an academic career such as university lecturers and training providers. Although obtaining a PhD opens these doors, the opportunities extend far beyond educational roles. In fact, recent data from the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) indicates only 23% of PhD graduates take a position in educational roles . What is an applied professional doctorate.

This doctorate is an advanced, high-level degree, too, earned after a period of three or more years of graduate-level study across a wide variety of disciplines. Like the Ph.D. it, too, culminates in the creation, submission, presentation and defense of a research dissertation or similar type of comprehensive final project.

The professional doctorate is also a research-based degree, only it emphasizes looking at existing bodies of knowledge and raising questions for the purposes of solving a problem and applying theories to a real-world setting.

Applied doctorate degrees first became well established in the United Kingdom and Australia and were initially offered in the United States by for-profit colleges and universities. Employer demand for higher skill levels and actionable problem-solving, however, opened up new programs at accredited non-profit institutions.

Different than a theoretical, Ph.D. degree, the professional doctorate is often the best terminal degree for the working professional who’s driven to lead and innovate.

Applied doctoral degree programs offer the opportunity to earn a practical degree that enables both subject mastery and field application.

What is the difference between the Ph.D. and doctorate?

It’s often assumed that a Ph.D. is a teaching-only degree while a professional doctorate is for the corporate player. The truth is, either degree can be valued in an academic or professional setting, depending on the type of institution or organization. Furthermore, either degree could be right for you.

Dr. Christopher Washington, Franklin University’s provost and chief academic officer explains the fundamental difference between the Ph.D. and the applied professional doctorate degree this way:

“With a Ph.D., you generate new theory. With the professional doctorate, you start from a place of practice and what’s going on in the world. More than 54,000 students earned doctoral degrees in 2016, the latest year for which figures are available, a 30 percent increase since 2000, according to the  National Science Foundation . A Ph.D., also called a doctorate, is a "Doctor of Philosophy" degree, which is a misleading moniker because most Ph.D. holders are not philosophers. The term for this increasingly popular degree derives from the original meaning of the word "philosophy," which comes from the ancient Greek word  philosophia , meaning "love of wisdom."

What Is a Ph.D.?

In that sense, the term "Ph.D." is accurate, because the degree has historically been a license to teach, but it also signifies that the holder is an "authority, in full command of (a given) subject right up to the boundaries of current knowledge, and able to extend them," says  FindAPhD , an online Ph.D. database. Earning a Ph.D. requires a hefty financial and time commitment— $35,000 to $60,000  and two to eight years—as well as research, creating a thesis or dissertation, and possibly some teaching duties.

Deciding to pursue a Ph.D. can represent a major life choice. Doctoral candidates require additional schooling after completing a master's program to earn their Ph.D.: They must complete additional coursework, pass comprehensive exams , and complete an independent dissertation in their field. Once completed, though, a doctoral degree—often called a "terminal degree"—can open doors for the Ph.D.holder, especially in academia but also in business.

Core Courses and Electives

To obtain a Ph.D., you need to take a group of core courses as well as electives, totaling about 60 to 62 "hours," which are roughly the equivalent of units at the bachelor's degree level. For example, Washington State University offers a  Ph.D. in crop science . Core courses, which make up about 18 hours, include such subjects as introduction to population genetics, plant transmission genetics, and plant breeding.

Additionally, the student must make up the remaining required hours through electives. The  Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health  offers a doctoral degree in Biological Sciences in Public Health. After core courses such as laboratory rotations, biological sciences seminars, and core principles of biostatistics and epidemiology, the Ph.D. candidate is required to take electives in related fields such as advanced respiratory physiology, advanced respiratory physiology, and ecological and epidemiological control of parasitic diseases. Degree-granting institutions across the board want to ensure that those who earn Ph.D.s have broad knowledge in their chosen field.

Thesis or Dissertation and Research

A Ph.D. also requires students to complete a large scholarly project known as a  dissertation , a research report—usually 60-plus pages—which signifies that they are able to make significant independent contributions to their chosen field of study. Students take on the project, also known as a  doctoral thesis , after completing the core and elective coursework and passing a  comprehensive examination . Through the dissertation, the student is expected to make a new and creative contribution to a field of study and to demonstrate her expertise.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, for example, a strong medical dissertation relies heavily on the creation of a specific hypothesis that can be either disproved or supported by data collected through independent student research. Further, it must also contain several key elements starting with an introduction to the problem statement, conceptual framework, and research question as well as references to literature already published on the topic. Students must show that the  dissertation  is relevant, provides new insight into the chosen field, and is a topic that they can research independently.

Financial Aid and Teaching

There are several ways to pay for a doctoral degree: scholarships, grants, fellowships, and government loans, as well as teaching.  GoGrad , a graduate school information website, provides such examples as the:

  • Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program, which provides full tuition and an annual stipend of $25,000 to $38,000.
  • National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, a three-year graduate fellowship that is designed to support doctoral students across 15 engineering disciplines
  • National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, a three-year program that provides an annual stipend of $34,000 and a $12,000 cost-of-education allowance for tuition and fees

As it does for bachelor's and master's degrees, the federal government also offers several  loan programs  to help students finance their Ph.D. studies. You generally apply for these loans by filling out the free application for federal student aid ( FAFSA ). Students planning to go into teaching after obtaining their doctoral degrees often also supplement their income by teaching undergraduate classes at the schools where they are studying. The University of California, Riverside, for example, offers a "teaching award"—essentially a stipend applied toward tuition costs—for Ph.D. candidates in English who teach undergraduate, beginning-level, English courses

Jobs and Opportunities for Ph.D. Holders

Education accounts for a large percentage doctoral awards, with elementary education, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership and administration, special education, and counselor education/ school counseling topping the list. Most universities in the United States require a Ph.D. for candidates who seek teaching positions, regardless of the department.

Many Ph.D. candidates seek the degree, however, to boost their current salaries. For example, a health, sports, and fitness educator at a community college would realize a bump in annual pay for obtaining a Ph.D. The same holds for educational administrators. Most such positions require only a master's degree, but obtaining a Ph.D. generally leads to an annual stipend that school districts add to the annual salary. That same health and fitness instructor at a community college could also move on from a teaching position and become a dean at a community college—a position that requires a Ph.D.—boosting his pay to  $120,000 to $160,000  a year or more.

So, the opportunities for a doctoral degree holder are wide and varied, but the cost and commitment required are significant. Most experts say you should know your future career plans before you make the commitment. If you know what you want to get out of the degree, then the years of required study and sleepless nights may well be worth the investment.

What Does a PhD Degree Stand For?

Many people do not understand what "Ph.D." means. Many know that it is an academic degree of some sort, but even among students still in school, the difference between a doctoral degree and a Ph.D. can still be confusing. The answer to the question "Is there a difference between a doctorate and a Ph.D.?" is yes and no.

What Is a Doctorate Degree?

A doctorate degree is the highest degree attainable in an academic field of study. A doctorate degree indicates that an individual has studied as much as possible in the area of his chosen field. It also indicates that the holder has found ways through his dissertation and course of study to add something new to the discipline and has provided a valuable new piece of scholarship to the field.

Generally, a doctorate degree is attained after several years of study in the chosen field. This does not need to be continuous study. Often, students enter their doctorate program years after they have spent time working in their chosen field. Other times, after pursuing a master's degree, a student will decide that she would like to become a professor. A doctorate is often pursued as a means of attaining that goal.

A doctorate degree is the most advanced degree an individual can achieve across disciplines. People who have received a doctorate degree in order to practice their profession include medical doctors, dentists, psychiatrists, psychologists and public school principals. However, the designation is different in various professions, which means a doctorate is not necessarily the same thing as a Ph.D.

Doctorate Degree vs. Ph.D.

The difference between a doctorate degree and a Ph.D. can sometimes be confusing, even to people who are in the field of academia themselves. A doctorate is a catch-all term, standing for the highest-attainable degree in a given discipline. The Ph.D., however, stands for "Doctor of Philosophy" and is a kind of doctorate degree, but not all doctorate degrees are Ph.D.s.

Despite the language in the title, a Ph.D. does not only refer to someone who has attained a very advanced degree in the field of philosophy. On the contrary, "Doctor of Philosophy" simply means that the person has achieved the highest-possible degree in his course of study in the humanities. A Ph.D. in divinity, a Ph.D. in philosophy and a Ph.D. in literature all fall under the umbrella of Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Are There Doctorates Besides the Ph.D.?

The Ph.D. is the most advanced degree in a field of study, but particular fields of study have their own titles for advanced degrees. These are, generally speaking, degrees that are less directed at research and philosophy of the discipline and are earned mostly toward a professional end.

These doctorates are still formidable and still indicate a tremendous amount of study and work on the part of the degree holder. The difference is that the goal is applying the study to a particular profession rather than conducting research with the end goal of scholarship.

What Doctorates Are There Besides a Ph.D.?

There are other varieties of doctorate degrees. One of the most familiar is the M.D. This is the medical doctorate degree. It means that the individual has attained the highest level of education in the field of medicine.

A Psy.D. is a degree indicating that the individual has earned the highest level of scholarship in the study of clinical psychology. A D.D.S is a doctorate degree in the field of dentistry, as is a D.M.D.

There are numerous other doctorate degrees that are not Ph.D.s. Likewise, the difference between an LLD and a Ph.D. is that the LLD is a doctorate-level degree in the study of law. A D.Tech degree is a doctorate degree in the field of technology.

What Is a Doctoral Student?

A doctoral student can be defined as anybody currently pursuing a doctorate degree in any field of study. This generally means that the person is pursuing a Ph.D. or another similar degree and that they are enrolled in a Ph.D. or doctoral program.

In the case of medical students, it usually means that the student is currently enrolled in medical school or is completing her residency. Anyone who is currently in a program that will result in holding a Ph.D. or another kind of doctorate degree can be said to be a doctoral student.

What Is the Structure of a Doctoral Program?

Doctoral studies are different from study for a master's degree or bachelor's degree. During a period of undergraduate study, the student generally spends his time in seminars and lectures, reading and researching and often writing papers or completing projects pertaining to his coursework. At the master's level, the curriculum is much the same, although the coursework may be replaced with fieldwork in certain cases, and there is a greater emphasis on students conducting their own research. There may be more in the way of papers, presentations and projects versus the tests and lectures that characterize undergraduate work.

However, when students are pursuing a Ph.D. or a doctoral degree of any sort, they are practicing scholarship. This means that they don't attend as many lectures or seminars on their subject but instead spend most of their time researching their own independent projects, teaching undergraduate courses and generally helping to further their field of scholarship.

The culmination of a Ph.D. program is the defense of a student's dissertation, which is the extensive study project on which he has spent his program working. This project must be defensible to a committee of professors who are expecting that the student has contributed something valuable and new to the field of scholarship.

Does Having a Doctorate Mean You're a Doctor?

It's a common misconception that having a doctorate means you are a doctor. In some contexts this is true, but in others, it can be confusing. Colloquially, in the United States, the word "doctor" is typically understood to mean a physician. A physician is a medical doctor who has earned her M.D., or doctorate of medicine. This is the highest and most advanced degree attainable in the medical field.

However, anyone who receives a Ph.D. or doctoral degree can be considered to be a doctor of her particular field. Someone who has earned a Ph.D. in education is a doctor of education. Someone who has earned a Ph.D. in history is a doctor of history, and so on. In other words, the only doctorate degree that refers to a medical doctor is the M.D. Dentists are also considered doctors because they've achieved the highest degree in their particular field – D.D.S. or D.M.D. – but they are not considered medical doctors.

It is a good idea to check with someone who has a Ph.D. to see how she likes to be addressed. Many people don't require that they are addressed as "Dr." and prefer to use the salutation "Mr." or "Mrs." because calling people "Dr." often gives the impression that they're a medical doctor, which can be confusing. However, some people do ask that the amount of time and study they have given to their discipline be recognized by the use of the salutation "Dr.," so it is always wise to check individual preference to avoid offense.

Is a Doctorate Higher Than a Master's?

A doctorate degree is the highest degree that one can attain in any discipline and is therefore higher than a master's degree. A master's degree is usually the degree that students get after completing a bachelor's and deciding that they would like to pursue further study in a particular area. A master's degree generally involves more advanced coursework than a bachelor's degree, and unlike a more general B.A. or B.S., it is devoted exclusively to study in one particular discipline.

Despite the fact that a doctorate degree is considered higher than a master's degree, a master's degree is still considered a significant accomplishment. A master's degree holder is considered to be a specialist in his field and in many cases may teach at the college level without having pursued a Ph.D., although a tenure-track position without a doctorate is harder to obtain.

There are many jobs where a master's in the discipline is required for eligibility. Master's degree candidates must also put in many hours of research in order to earn their degree and in many cases may choose to publish their writing in academic journals or other publications.

Can You Get a Ph.D. Without a Master's Degree?

There are some cases in which a student may advance to a Ph.D. program without having gone through a master's program. These programs are often longer than a typical Ph.D. program and incorporate some amount of the coursework that a student would expect to undertake during a master's program.

Therefore, it is not always required to earn a master's before going on to pursue a doctorate or Ph.D., but that is the most typical path to earning an advanced degree. Most schools require that previous study.

What Is the Difference Between a D.Tech and a Ph.D.?

The D.Tech degree is a degree with which many Americans are unfamiliar. The D.Tech degree is the name given to the most advanced degree that one can pursue in the field of technology. The D.Tech has various names depending on the country in which it is awarded.

In some countries, the D.Tech is given the same sort of weight as a doctorate degree. In other countries, it is considered far less significant. In South Africa, for example, the D.Tech is given the same weight as other research doctorates, but in countries like the United States, it is considered to be closer to a professional certification.

In the United States, the National Science Foundation initially recognized the D.Tech as equivalent to a Doctor of Philosophy degree. However, in 2008, the D.Tech was re-evaluated and found to be closer to a degree reflecting a professional pursuit. It was decided that the D.Tech did not meet the criteria for a research doctorate, and it is instead considered in a professional category rather than a research category.

What Is a Research Doctorate?

The distinctions in degrees and their weights are important, particularly given the fact that different countries consider these degrees with varying levels of importance. In the United States, the emphasis placed on a research doctorate is significant. This is because it indicates that the degree holder doesn't only have a professional understanding of the discipline but has conducted significant research and has done the kind of writing and teaching that furthers the scholarship of the discipline.

This is particularly important to distinguish Ph.D. holders who have written dissertations or conducted projects that have significantly advanced the scholarship in their field. By moving the D.Tech to a designation outside of research doctorates, the National Science Foundation intended to truly honor those scholars who have made such valuable contributions to their subjects.

"Doctor" is from the Latin meaning "teacher" (much like "doctrine," or much as "docent" for either similar positions overseas or the post of museum guide domestically), the premise being that those skilled in actual medicine (and not the guesswork that had prevailed for the millennia before) were now considered expert enough to guide or instruct others. It had actually been used for non-medical fields for centuries earlier. The twist, of course, is that we now use the title in a "social context" only for those in the Johnny-come-lately field of medicine, perhaps because of the obvious embarrassment that might arise when someone styling themselves "Doctor" is rushed to a trauma scene at a party and asked to save someone's life; the need to distinguish those individuals possessing such skills has trumped the prestige factor for all those in other worthy disciplines. As someone who pursued both for a time, I can say: my job is important, even critical, but it ain't lifesaving.

I was taught, as a young child, in England that when writing to my grandparents I should address the envelope to "Dr. and Mrs. E. W. Shanahan". Yes, this is the right practice.

A PhD degree is a "Doctor of Philosophy", and the appropriate formal title for that is "Doctor". That there are other professions that can be called "Doctor", for example holders of an MD degree, is simply because there are multiple fields one could be a Doctor of.

Not in Austria. In Austria, Dr. is an official part of the name of a person who has a doctorate degree (or has undergone "Nostrifikation", which means that a degree is formally certified to be equivalents of a Dr.) For the most part, "Dr." degrees have been phased out after the Bologna process.

Post-Bologna doctoral studies usually award a PhD, which, as an academic degree, is also oficially part of the name.

So roughly speaking, if you finished (more or less) the same course of studies in pre-Bologna days, you're Dr. IgotiT, whereas if you finished it in post-Bologna days, you're IgotiT, PhD.

The degrees may well be equivalent as far as their academic value is concerned, but nevertheless, you cannot use them interchangably.

Carrying an academic degree that you're not legally entitled to is punishable by up to one year of jail, although I find it unlikely that anyone is actually going to convict you for using "Dr", when in fact you're a "PhD". Don't count on it though, I am not a lawyer.

The term, "Doctor", has been used to describe accomplished scholars as early as the 1300s. It's derived from the latin verb, "docere", which means, to teach. Historically I think that's the inevitable conclusion of any sort of learning journey--the drive to share that accumulated knowledge with others. The title of Doctor is a means to socially honor those that have dedicated years to learning. The point is to recognize them as subject matter experts, regardless of what they choose to do with that attained knowledge.

In recent centuries, we developed a convention to call physicians "Doctors". They may or may not treat patients. They may or may not hold a PhD. They may or may not teach. None of that is the point. The point is to demonstrate that a physician is learned enough to be trusted and respected in their field of study--medicine. This is uniquely important considering that lives are on the line, but the reasoning is the same as those with a Doctorate degree. I suppose they wanted to make it very clear to the public that medical doctors are experts, even though many don't hold a mainstream post-graduate degree. Other, non-medical disciplines may be incredibly complex in their own right, but they don't require the same level of public faith.

So, in a way, medical providers being called Doctors is a deceptively clever marketing device used to safeguard the health of countless millions of lives.

...and regardless of the formalities and technicalities of any country's academic taxonomy, it just boils down to the title's original purpose, to honor learning.

Only Ph.D’s must be refered as to Doctors because they hold doctoral degrees and they “teach”. The word Doctor means “teacher or I teach”. Physicians should be only called “Physicians” because they hold only Bachelors degrees in medicine. In the USA, they took the Bachelors in medicine and surgery program and divided into two programs only to be addressed as to doctors. Physicians are only treating people not teaching people.

About the PhD in Environmental Health Program

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program is a full-time degree program that offers a unique interdisciplinary learning experience where the course of study is individually tailored based on the student’s interest in understanding and finding solutions to pressing problems in environmental health and engineering.

The goal of PhD training in EHE is to prepare graduates to engage in scholarship and professional practice that creates new knowledge, use research to transform practice and improve the health of the environment and the public, and effectively communicate research findings to the public. The program requires didactic coursework followed by an average of four to five years of research towards a doctoral dissertation (also referred to as a thesis on official forms and committees).

Training is offered through a core curriculum that is required of all PhD students in the Department with the addition of track/program-specific requirements and focused courses in specialized areas.

Students are expected to tailor their curricula, working with their advisers to create a comprehensive plan of study and research. PhD thesis must be based on original research, worthy of publication, and approved by the Department and a committee of thesis (dissertation) readers. PhD students must also be engaged in primary data collection as a component of their dissertation research or embedded in other research during their training here.

Our programs are offered in the  Whiting School of Engineering , on the Homewood campus (WSE) and the  Bloomberg School of Public Health  (BSPH) East Baltimore campus. Students in all of our programs have the unique opportunity to take classes on both the Homewood and East Baltimore campuses in order to complete their degree requirements.

Standardized test scores are  not required and not reviewed  for this program. If you have taken a standardized test such as the GRE, GMAT, or MCAT and want to submit your scores, please note that they will not be used as a metric during the application review.  Applications will be reviewed holistically based on all required application components.

Vivien Thomas PhD Scholars

The  Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative (VTSI)  is an endowed fellowship program at Johns Hopkins for PhD students in STEM fields. It provides full tuition, stipend, and benefits while also providing targeted mentoring, networking, community, and professional development opportunities. Students who have attended a historically Black college and university (HBCU) or other minority serving institution (MSI) for undergraduate study are eligible to apply. To be considered for the VTSI, you will need to submit a SOPHAS application, VTSI supplementary materials, and all supporting documents (letters, transcripts, and test scores) by December 1, 2024. VTSI applicants are eligible for an application fee waiver , but the fee waiver must be requested by November 15, 2024 and prior to submission of the SOPHAS application.

Tuition and Funding

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the JHU PhD Union, the minimum guaranteed 2025-2026 academic year stipend is $50,000 for all PhD students with a 4% increase the following year. Tuition, fees, and medical benefits are provided, including health insurance premiums for PhD student’s children and spouses of international students, depending on visa type. The minimum stipend and tuition coverage is guaranteed for at least the first four years of a BSPH PhD program; specific amounts and the number of years supported, as well as work expectations related to that stipend will vary across departments and funding source. Please refer to the  CBA to review specific benefits, compensation, and other terms.

Need-Based Relocation Grants Students who  are admitted to PhD programs at JHU   starting in Fall 2023 or beyond can apply to receive a need-based grant to offset the costs of relocating to be able to attend JHU.   These grants provide funding to a portion of incoming students who, without this money, may otherwise not be able to afford to relocate to JHU for their PhD program. This is not a merit-based grant. Doctor of Engineering Curriculum

Degree Requirements with the Doctor of Engineering  

The Doctor of Engineering (D. Eng) requires 90 credit hours. Professionals may transfer up to 30 credit hours from a relevant master’s degree and/or other non-degree coursework into the D.Eng. program, subject to faculty review. The program features research methodology and professional development coursework, advanced mathematics and statistics, a wide variety of engineering courses, and a culminating applied research project. Degree requirements: 

  • 12 credit hours of core curriculum and foundational courses  
  • 27 minimum credit hours of technical depth courses  
  • 12 minimum credit hours of professional and applied courses  
  • A minimum 30 credit research thesis and dissertation  

As you complete your first full semester, you will work through a fundamentals  to establish your individual electronic Plan of Study (EPOS). Each student’s plan of study will be unique, designed to meet the needs of their individual background and interests. Advisory committees will work with students to develop a plan of study that best meets their individual academic needs and career goals. All students are required to have an approved Electronic Plan of Study in order to graduate from Purdue.  

The Electronic Plan of Study serves as a contract between you, your faculty advisor, academic advisor, and Purdue University’s Graduate School. Your EPOS is a blueprint for successful completion of your degree requirements. The plan must be approved adhering to department and Graduate School policies. We strongly encourage students to have an approved Plan of Study on file by the end of their second semester.  

CORE REQUIREMENT – 6 CREDIT HOURS

The following courses are required:  

  • ENGR 60100: Doctor of Engineering Fundamentals (1 credit)   
  • ENGR 60200: Research Fundamentals (3 credits)  
  • ENGR 60300: Doctor of Engineering Seminar (1 credit)

These courses provide the foundational concepts and theories that are applied in a students desired technical field. These courses should equip students to gain significant knowledge, experience, and capability in a particular technology or technical domain directly related to a student’s career goals.   

Students will work with their advisor(s) and during ENGR 60100: Doctor of Engineering Fundamentals to identify a selection of Technical Depth Courses to fulfill this requirement and build an Electronic Plan of Study.  

Professional and Applied Courses - 12 Credit Hours

These courses provide additional training, expertise and practice in areas that are important to student’s professional development, but that might not be specific to one technical area. Examples include technical writing, pedagogical theory and practice, project management, product development, leadership development, grant and technical report writing.    

Students will work with their advisor(s) and during ENGR 60100: Doctor of Engineering Fundamentals to identify a selection of Professional and Applied Courses to fulfill this requirement and build an Electronic Plan of Study.  

Doctor of Engineering Research Course - 3 Credit Hours

Doctor of Engineering students will earn course credit for a multi-semester applied research project in which they work closely with faculty advisor. Measurable outcomes of the research project include a final report/dissertation and demonstration of expertise in the topic area. Other outcomes of research include knowledge dissemination ( i.e. presentations at scientific or trades conference , white papers, internal reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts in archival journals, book chapters).  

ELECTIVE COURSES – REMAINING CREDIT HOURS

Any courses listed on our courses page will fulfill this requirement, including available non-engineering courses.  

All questions regarding courses and transfer credits should be directed to a student’s academic advisor.  

Items of Note:    

  • Transfer credits from a student’s Master’s degree will be evaluated and applied to specific components of the degree. Students will utilize ENGR 60100: Doctor of Engineering Fundamentals to propose how a previous master’s degree could be applied to D.Eng. degree requirements.  
  • Minimum credit requirements allow for maximum flexibility and the ability to tailor your degree plan to your specific areas of interest and goals. After you begin your studies at Purdue, an academic advisor will provide you with tools to map out a plan of study tailored to align with your specific goals.  

  Dissertation    

The dissertation demonstrates the candidate’s ability to conduct substantial and significant research in the engineering discipline(s) selected. Candidates are expected to demonstrate mastery of the key literature in the field and use this to situate the specific project they propose. Students enroll in a College of Engineering doctoral research course to complete and receive credit for their dissertation research. Students are required to complete a minimum of thirty credit hours of doctoral research, a requirement that will be distributed across multiple semesters. The exact duration of this distribution depends on the individual student's progress in their dissertation research. In most cases, it is expected that a student will use their final one or two years to formulate the research topic, develop the proposal, and conduct self-directed research under the guidance of their faculty advisor and with the hopeful support of an industry partner and advisor—likely the student’s full-time employer.  

At the conclusion of their program, or in the final semester, students will have a final oral defense of their dissertation research before a graduate committee of reviewers.  

Distinction between a PhD and a professional Doctorate degree    

A PhD in Engineering is earned by demonstrating research independence in an engineering-related field of study and generation of new knowledge. A Doctor of Engineering is earned by completion of interdisciplinary professional coursework and demonstration of research independence in an engineering-related field of study, and direct application of the research to engineering practice in real-world, industry, commercial, defense, or other areas of operation and utilization.    

In each program, dissemination of knowledge is key to the training, but may differ depending on the context of each student’s unique context (i.e. presentations at scientific or trades conference, white papers, internal reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts in archival journals, book chapters).

Dr. Jasmaine Ataga is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Online Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Seattle University. Dr. Ataga is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Georgia, a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S), an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). She has over seven years of counseling experience and ten years in crisis and trauma care. Her clinical specialty is centered on sexual trauma work and utilizing expressive arts to promote meaning-making.

Dr. Ataga is also the founder of Zen360, LLC, a small organization that creates and facilitates expressive trainings and international outreach trips for professionals, graduate students, and educators passionate about mental health. As an expressive trauma specialist, she has created sand-tray interventions, art-based techniques, and expressive-based workshops for counselors and clients. Dr. Ataga's primary goal as an educator is to help counselors-in-training learn expressive healing, gain deeper awareness, and implement a routine centered on self-care and peace.

Dr. Ataga is driven by a holistic approach to mental health, advocacy for trauma survivors, and a commitment to fostering peace, all of which led her to teach at Seattle University.

The information below is a summary of the formal degree requirements for the PhD in ECE.

Requirements Overview

  • Complete approved courses for PhD degree
  • Complete  Responsible Conduct of Research  (RCR) training
  • Complete the Qualifying Examination (QE)
  • Establish and meet with a Supervisory Committee
  • Complete the Preliminary Examination
  • Complete two Teaching Assistantship assignments
  • Prepare and defend a dissertation [ dissertation guidelines ]
  • Complete the  Final Examination

For students  matriculating with a bachelor’s degree , a minimum of 10 courses are required, as follows:

  • Six graduate-level courses in ECE (500-level or higher)
  • Two approved graduate-level technical electives (500-level or higher, technical in nature, and chosen to provide a coherent program of study)
  • Two approved electives (chosen to provide a coherent program of study)

For students  matriculating with a master’s degree from another institution , a minimum of five (5) courses are required, as follows:

  • Three graduate-level courses in ECE (500-level or higher)
  • One approved graduate-level technical elective (500-level or higher, technical in nature, and chosen to provide a coherent program of study)
  • One approved elective (chosen to provide a coherent program of study)

A program of study detailing the planned/completed coursework must be approved at the Qualifying Exam (bring to exam with advisor’s signature) and Preliminary Exam stages of the PhD.

Important Notes:

  • Courses must be worth 3 (or more) graduate semester hours
  • Courses must be graded (Credit/No Credit or audited courses may not count toward the Program of Study)
  • ECE 899 Independent Study can be used to satisfy only the Approved Elective requirement
  • Undergraduate Courses (numbered 499 or lower) require DGS and Graduate School permission for enrollment and may have special restrictions
  • Overall Program of Study must indicate adequate breadth, including some courses distinctly outside student’s main curricular area and research topic
  • Course selection must be formally approved by a student’s adviser and the DGS through the submission and approval of a Program of Study (Qualifying Exam committee approves the first draft version as part of the exam process)
  • Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to remain in good standing and to graduate

Qualifying Examination

The purpose of the Qualifying Exam is to assess the potential to succeed in the PhD program by having students demonstrate:

  • Reading and deeply understanding three selected papers in the field
  • Understanding the strengths and shortcomings of the three papers
  • Understanding why the particular problem space defined by the three papers is important
  • Generating sound research ideas based on the strengths and shortcomings of the three papers
  • Writing and presenting information supporting the points above

Supervisory Committee

The supervisory committee is formed in preparation for the preliminary examination and must consist of at least five members (including the student’s advisor), at least three of which must be graduate ECE faculty members.

In addition, as required by The Graduate School, at least one (1) member of the committee must be from either another department or a clearly separate field of study within the Duke ECE Department. Committees are proposed using the  Committee Approval Form .

Note:  While the Graduate School’s Committee Approval Form lists a minimum of four (4) committee members, the ECE Department requires five (5) committee members.

Teaching Assistantship

All PhD students must complete two semesters of a Teaching Assistantship (TA) prior to graduation. We provide training before you enter an undergraduate classroom for the first time.

The student is expected to complete this requirement sometime during his or her third through the eighth semester. Teaching Assistantships will be assigned by the DGS based on the background and interests of the student and the current department needs.

Teaching Assistantships are expected to require 10 hours per week on average and may involve such activities as organizing and leading discussion sections, grading homework and quizzes, assisting in the development of course materials, supervising laboratory sessions and so forth.

Preliminary Examination

The preliminary examination, which must be completed by the end of academic year three, consists of (1) a written dissertation research proposal and 2) an oral presentation and defense of this proposal to an approved five-member faculty committee.

The written dissertation research proposal should consist of a 10-page (maximum) report plus appendices providing additional supporting information as well as an anticipated timeline for completion of all PhD degree requirements.

The oral presentation, approximately 45 minutes with extra time allotted for questions posed by the committee throughout and after the presentation, should reflect the contents of the report.

Final Examination

The student must follow the Graduate School’s guidelines for submitting the dissertation and scheduling the Final Examination, including submitting the departmental defense announcement to the ECE Graduate Office and uploading the dissertation at least two weeks prior to the defense.

The minimum required amount of coursework is 30 units.

The program of coursework, including the applicability of any  transfer credits , is determined by the student, their advisor and their committee.

Each committee meeting should include an update on progress towards coursework requirements. The student’s committee retains the power to approve the coursework or request that the student take additional courses.

The advanced math (3 units required) and life science (3 units required) courses, and up to one (1) independent study class may be used toward the 30-credit requirement. See a list of potential life science and advanced math courses . Students are not limited to the courses listed.

Important Notes

  • Ungraded seminars do not count toward the 30-unit requirement. Students are encouraged to discuss class selection with their advisor upon matriculation and frequently throughout their course of study
  • Students seeking a master’s degree en route to a PhD must satisfy the degree requirements for the master’s degree. These are not necessarily aligned with the PhD coursework requirements, and so special consideration should be taken

Two semesters of BME Seminar are required. New matriculants take BME 702’s (Fall only).

Second-year students take BME 701’s (Spring only).

Teaching Assistantship

Two (2) semesters aare required. Duke BME PhD students typically fulfill their teaching assistant (TA) assignments in years 2 to 5.

Ana Guadalupe Reyes, PhD, LPC, NCC, CHST

Ana Guadalupe Reyes, PhD, LPC, NCC, CHST (elle|they|them|theirs) is a National Certified Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor (TX), and Certified Humanistic Sandtray Therapist. Dr. Reyes is also a Usui Reiki Master/Teacher who practices various forms of energy healing.

With over 13 years of experience working with underserved and never-served populations, including communities of color, immigrants, refugees, survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer clients in multiple settings, Dr. Reyes integrates somatic, liberatory, and holistic approaches into their work as a scholar, educator, advocate, and counselor. In these roles, they practice anti-oppressive and emancipatory approaches to counseling and research. Inspired by these approaches, Dr. Reyes engages in ongoing reflexivity, dialogue, and action with other researchers and clinicians to promote liberatory research approaches in counseling.

Teaching Statement

My teaching philosophy embraces ongoing self-discovery, vulnerability, and purposeful dialogue with students. Informed by my own experiences as a student, teacher, organizer, client, and counselor, as well as Freire’s critical pedagogy and Mezirow’s transformative learning theories, I see the classroom as a space to collaboratively and creatively examine and transform power dynamics. As an anti-racist educator, I employ a relational and cultural approach to respond to students’ needs and empower them to explore their identities, critically assess power dynamics, and develop the specialized knowledge necessary to become culturally responsive, socially just counselors.

Selected Research

I am a socially-just qualitative researcher committed to scholarly work that is action-oriented, liberatory, and anti-oppressive. My dissertation research explored queer womxn of color’s (QWoC) experiences of microaggressions in therapy using intersectionality theory (Crenshaw, 1989) and photovoice methodology (Wang, 1999; Wang & Burris, 1997). In collaboration with seven QWoC who courageously shared their experiences of microaggressions in therapy, I developed a photovoice exhibit, Through Our Lens, to increase awareness of co-researchers’ experiences in therapy.

My research interests are diverse yet grounded in participatory action research (PAR) principles. PAR provides a research framework in which participants are more than subjects onto which research is conducted. Unlike other research methodologies, PAR “is considered democratic, equitable, liberating, and life-enhancing” (MacDonald, 2012, p. 35) because this methodology requires the collection and analysis of data to drive action and create change in the lives of co-researchers, marginalized communities, and society at large (Kidd & Kral, 2005; Latz, 2017). I am interested in exploring QWoC’s resilience, resistance, and factors that support their healing. I am also interested in research related to the lived experiences and mental health needs of Latinx/Latine folx, particularly queer and [un]documented Latinx/Latine communities, the integration of indigenous healing approaches into counseling, and the development of bilingual counselors and culturally conscious counselors. I enjoy partnering with communities and students to co-create research studies that are healing and liberatory for all involved.

A Test of Resolve: Ceimone Henderson-Strickland earns doctorate degree

(August 23, 2024) - The journey in education taken by CSU’s Ceimone Henderson-Strickland, special assistant to the President, has been nothing short of inspiring.

As a recent recipient of a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from the University of West Georgia, Henderson-Strickland's academic achievements stand as a testament to her dedication and passion for learning. 

Reflecting on her journey, Henderson-Strickland shared, “As the product of two educators, the value of education was instilled in me at a very early age. I am very proud of this achievement, and I hope to never stop learning."

Henderson-Strickland's academic path began with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Oakwood University, followed by a Master of Business Administration from Mercer University.

However, it was her pursuit of a doctorate that truly tested her resolve. 

“This was a labor of love and a personal goal achieved through transitions of employment and a pandemic,” she explained. “I read somewhere that less than 5% of people in the world complete a doctorate, and I absolutely understand why. It is not for the faint of heart.”

Her achievement is even more remarkable considering the professional responsibilities she juggled along the way. 

Yet, Henderson-Strickland never wavered in her commitment to her education, crediting the supportive environment at her workplace for helping her reach this milestone.

“I feel very fortunate to work in an environment that encourages the pursuit of education. I couldn’t have done it without the support of this campus and my work colleagues. Thank you for uplifting me through this process,” she says gratefully.

Dr. Henderson-Strickland’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, passion, and the value of a supportive community.

Her journey is inspiration for all who aspire to reach new heights in their personal and professional lives.

I met a girl online and she wants to come here but says after purchasing visa, passport, tickets, etc. she was told she still needs $1525 for a required insurance. any info on this would be greatly appriciated.

It is not true...

I am going to USA in December. I paid about $15 for medical insurance for two weeks. Any other insurances are not required.
