JJ/WBGSP 2024 application windows are now closed. Details on the 2025 application cycle will be published on the JJ/WBGSP website in the fall.

  • Developing Country Nationals

The World Bank’s  Development Economics  Vice Presidency (DEC) provides scholarships to students and young researchers, contributing to the World Bank’s mission of forging new dynamic approaches to capacity development and knowledge sharing in the developing world.

It is an important component of the World Bank’s efforts to promote economic development and shared prosperity through investing in education, capacity building, and developing human resources in the developing world.

Since 1982, the DEC’s scholarship programs have helped to form a pool of over 6,000 well-trained and experienced development professionals and scholars, transforming their countries and positively impacting future generations.

Active Programs

  • Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program  (JJ/WBGSP): Since 1987, JJ/WBGSP has enabled more than 6,000 mid-career professionals from 160 developing countries and Japan to complete graduate degrees in development-related fields. On an annual basis, the Government of Japan solely funds the JJ/WBGSP.
  • Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program  (RSMFP): Since 1982, RSMFP has provided support to young researchers on a wide variety of topics in development-related fields. Currently, the program connects promising young researchers to World Bank research, data resources, and technical expertise. Selected fellows are hosted as a cohort at the World Bank in Washington D.C. and work on DEC research projects, receiving formal training and participating in policy relevant research.

Inactive Program

Japan Indonesia Presidential Scholarship Program (JIPS):  This Program is no longer accepting applications.  With a one-time $10 million grant from the Government of Japan, this scholarship supported three cohorts (2008–2010) of 43 Indonesian PhD students to study abroad under the sponsorship of one of the program’s ten partner Indonesian universities. This window is now closed to new applicants.

Ei-Ei-Swe, JOINT JAPAN / WORLD BANK Graduate Scholarship Program

Studying abroad is a great opportunity to advance a professional career and the JJ/WBGSP scholarship can be decisive to make that happen. The scholarship benefit package is sufficient to get by in a foreign country. My advice to potential applicants is that they should trust themselves and highlight their achievements for the development of their country.

PhD programme on Innovation, Economics, Governance and Sustainable Development

Research Week

Introduction

Our PhD programme on Innovation, Economics, Governance and Sustainable Development (IEGSD) offers high-quality education, training and supervision to our PhD candidates, leading to a doctoral degree from  Maastricht University .

Through our disciplinary and multidisciplinary research, we aim to contribute to the academic debate and to societal policy and innovation solutions at all stages of the policy process, from setting the policy agenda to delivering and evaluating public policy.

In meeting these aims, we ensure that our research maintains the highest standards of academic and scientific excellence and rigour while remaining policy-relevant.

The PhD programme is part of the  UNU-MERIT Graduate School  and hosts over 100 PhD fellows working on a doctoral dissertation within the core disciplines of UNU-MERIT:

  • The economics of innovation — Topics of interest include: the process of technological change and innovation; the economics of knowledge and new technologies; structural change and economic development; economic complexity and innovation.
  • Public policy and governance — Topics of interest include: governance and institutions; migration and development; population, development and labour economics; social protection; poverty and inequality; policy analysis and evaluation.
  • Societal transformations — Topics of interest include: innovation and entrepreneurship for sustainable transitions; sustainable innovation and transformation; system transitions; innovation for the ‘base of the Pyramid’.

Dual career

Dual career PhD programme

Phd positions and programmes at unu-merit.

There are several types of PhD positions within UNU-MERIT, and Maastricht University more broadly, depending on the type of funding (with an employment contract from Maastricht University, through a research grant or fellowship or using other external sources of funding) and the time available for the doctoral research (full-time or part-time, in combination with work responsibilities). See also PhD information from Maastricht University .

Salaried PhD positions at UNU-MERIT are less common, but not excluded, and are mainly recruited by way of externally funded projects. Vacancies are usually only advertised when a professor has obtained an external grant and the topic of the PhD dissertation is more or less fixed.  In coordination with the PhD programme director, these fellows can be allowed to participate in one of the PhD programmes in a flexible manner, depending on their time available for PhD research and training needs.

To accommodate the need for a large community of scholars active in the core areas of the institute and the increasingly hybrid type of PhD positions held to conduct the PhD trajectory, the UNU-MERIT PhD programme is composed of two different PhD tracks, each appealing to PhD fellow profiles with different education and supervision needs, funding alternatives and time involvement.

Applications are invited from highly motivated and talented fellows, especially from the Global South, who want to join a thriving and collaborative community of scholars focusing on pressing global challenges, including migration, climate action, digital transformation, poverty and inequality, and particularly their impact on human and economic sustainable development.

Setting up a collaborative PhD Programme in Sustainable Development Studies

Photo of an African map with a magnifying glass over it

The ARUA collaborative PhD programmes are an aspiring project that intends to significantly change how doctoral training is done in the region. Importantly, the pilot phase of the programmes will target young African students and comes with an admission target of 70% women in each cohort. The overall goal is to graduate 1,000 PhD students annually at ARUA member universities.

Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, who was the Secretary-General of ARUA until he retired at the end of last month, says this ARUA project “is designed to develop a template that could be used by all African universities for the future growth of PhD programmes”.

The Mastercard Foundation will support the first 10 years of the programmes.

The Sustainable Development Studies PhD Programme has two distinct prongs: Sustainable Development Economics; and Climate and Development Studies.

The programme is curated by a team from ACEIR and the ARUA Centre of Excellence in Climate and Development (ARUA-CD) with key partners from two of the Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs) set up by ARUA and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (The Guild).

These Africa-Europe Clusters – in Inequalities, Poverty, and Deprivation ( CoRE IPD ); and on Nature-based Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation ( CoRE-NBS ), comprise researchers from ACEIR, ARUA-CD, and The Guild universities.

ACEIR’s director, Prof. Murray Leibbrandt from the University of Cape Town, says the two ARUA centres in collaboration with their respective CoRE partners are not only embarking on an interdisciplinary research and teaching journey with this programme.

“We aim to gradually transform the institutional framework towards transdisciplinary work within our universities.”

The programme is to be built off strong foundations, Prof. Leibbrandt points out, as the institutions leading the collaboration are fully committed to supporting a programme of this scale and complexity.

“The institutional excellence that comes with the programme partners promises the delivery of a unique and valuable collaborative programme of research, graduate training, and broader capacity building at a scale that currently does not exist.”

A challenge-based learning approach for real-world problem-solving

“To generate solutions to Africa's development challenges, this PhD programme must significantly differ from traditional ones”, says Prof. Robert D. Osei, convenor of ACEIR’s Ghana node at the University of Ghana. He is the PhD programme co-lead for ARUA together with Prof. Leibbrandt.

“While the programme will leverage disciplinary strengths and methods, it will be interdisciplinary as much as possible and challenge-based to engage students in real-world problem-solving.”

A joint research and capacity building project on the interactions between climate action and inequality by ACEIR and ARUA-CD researchers have already demonstrated the potential for interdisciplinary research across climate and economics.

The PhD programme's intention to tackle real-world issues will emphasise understanding and addressing the factors that influence growth, poverty dynamics, and sustainable development in Africa. Specific attention will be given to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Prof. Osei says PhD candidates will at the onset be guided on course selection that is relevant to their individual career and development plans. Once coursework is successfully completed, they will be embedded at collaborating institutions in research projects that overlap with their own interests and project work.

This includes the opportunity to work with the programme’s CoRE partner universities in Europe, giving them access to world-class research capacities and mentorship.

In this way the PhD students will be exposed to working in diverse research teams and get networking and career progression opportunities. Other components of the programme will help students to hone their communication skills; and to establish close ties with businesses, civil society, and policy communities to prepare those interested in employment outside academia.

Fully paid for, and flexible

Inadequate funding to support students has been recognised by ARUA universities as one of the contributors to the continent’s low output of PhD graduates, according to Prof. Aryeetey .

Providing adequate financial support to students is therefore important to ensure the ARUA PhD programmes are accessible to students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, especially female PhD candidates who often have competing caregiving and income-earning responsibilities.

Prof. Leibbrandt says the Sustainable Development Studies programme will make available competitive scholarships for full-time studies without the need for taking on additional paid work.

“The programme also considers the reality of unpaid care work and family responsibilities by allowing students to customise their study-abroad times according to their needs.”

Sustainable development through the lens of two disciplines

The first stream of the programme – in Sustainable Development Economics – aims to provide comprehensive training to PhD candidates across the University of Cape Town, the University of Ghana, and the University of Nairobi. International collaborations on this prong of the programme are The Guild’s CoRE IPD partners, the University of Groningen and Aarhus University; and the African Economic Research Consortium, which has the largest network of an existing collaborative PhD training in economics on the continent.

The second stream, in Climate and Development Studies, aims to provide interdisciplinary training at four ARUA universities: the University of Cape Town, University of Ghana, University of Nairobi, and Stellenbosch University. The Guild’s CoRE-NBS partner is the University of Bologna.

Students in the programme will have to complete several interdisciplinary courses to equip them with the resourcefulness needed to address the complexity of sustainable development challenges.

Existing data hubs an excellent resource for doctoral studies

High-quality data are a vital resource for PhD projects. The programme, therefore, will provide access to ACEIR’s cross-sectional and – uniquely – longitudinal datasets on inequality, poverty, and development in Africa. Together with datasets used by ARUA-CD for analysis of climate change risk, its impacts, adaptation, climate governance and implications on human development, the programme will be able to offer collaborative PhD students access to an excellent data hub, or linked data hubs.

Such a data hub/s would be a most impactful research infrastructure contribution by this collaborative programme.

In addition, the University of Groningen’s Growth and Development Centre brings a set of comprehensive databases on indicators of growth and development that are important for tracking and understanding long-run economic development patterns in Africa, and internationally. And, the ARUA partner universities’ extensive network, especially with national statistical offices, will also help make relevant data accessible to the students.

Policy assessments and evaluation skills are important components

Given the programme’s aim to be relevant to contemporary regional and global development challenges, policy impact evaluation and training in rigorous evaluation techniques will be prioritised. A course is planned to equip students with the necessary skills to conduct comprehensive policy assessment.

Prof. Leibbrandt says that, overall, students enrolled in this PhD programme will to be equipped to apply methodological and analytical tools to address any of the SDGs from a multidisciplinary perspective.

“The programme will be designed to be highly attractive to individuals – especially Africans – who aspire to become impactful scholars, researchers, policymakers, or international development practitioners”.

The programme commences in 2026 and aims to award up to 100 new PhD scholarships to students each year during the ARUA project’s pilot phase.

Admission and thesis requirements. A good Masters degree in Economics plus one reference is usually required. Students are normally registered for the MPhil degree in the first instance. Once approval of the Research Student's Supervisory Committee has been received, the student's registration is upgraded to PhD status (and backdated to the commencement of the MPhil registration), usually at the end of the first year of study, for which the minimum registration period is double that of full-time study. Candidates are expected to present a thesis of not more than 55,000 words for the MPhil, while for the PhD the maximum length is 100,000 words. International applicants should also see  Doctoral School English language requirements

Course overview

The PhD in Development Economics is a research degree offered by the Department of Economics, and is also part of the PhD pathway, 'International Development', within the Bloomsbury Doctoral Training Partnership.

The latter forms one of the few Centres recognised by the UK's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), thereby receiving financial support, and especially individual grants, for MSc and PhD students.

Why study PhD Development Economics at SOAS?

  • We are ranked 27th in UK for economics (QS World University Rankings 2023)
  • We are top 20 in the UK for student satisfaction with teaching (Complete University Guide 2023)
  • We are top 40 in the UK for economics (Complete University Guide 2023)
  • This PhD pathway is open to applicants whether or not eligible for, or in receipt of, ESRC funding, with ESRC-funded students expected to form a small minority overall. Successful applicants to the MPhil/PhD in Development Economics will normally have a good Master's degree in a relevant subject if entering directly into the MPhil/PhD pathway although each applicant is assessed on merits including work and other experience
  • The first year of training involves attendance at courses and/or seminars but not usually formal written examinations. Students are registered for an MPhil in their first (full-time equivalent) year but usually convert to a PhD after their upgrade viva rather than continuing to the MPhil qualification
  • An essential feature of the MPhil and PhD process is the close working relationship between research students and supervisors. Supervisors and students meet regularly and consult closely. All research students have a Supervisory Committee to cover theoretical, empirical and regionally-specific supervision, as appropriate

Research student tutors

There are Research Student Tutors with overall responsibility for research students, who are available for discussion of general problems. And the Departmental Empirical Support Committee (DESC) offers detailed and individual advice to students about fieldwork and empirical analysis as appropriate.

As necessary, upon request, DESC will consider individual student needs and allocate one or more members of staff (not necessarily the supervisor) to advise.

Workshop/seminar

Students are required to participate in a workshop/seminar in which research topics and results are presented and discussed by staff and students. In addition, there is a regular Departmental seminar, to which members of the Department and visiting speakers present papers.

There is a strong interdisciplinary basis for research and teaching in political economy, development economics and area or specific country studies. London, moreover, provides an unrivalled opportunity for students to hear papers read by leading authorities in African and Asian studies, as well as in economics and development more generally.

Many SOAS research students spend some time doing fieldwork in the regions of their research. The Faculty of Law and Social Sciences and the School as a whole, through their various connections with individuals and institutions in the universities and governments of Asia and Africa, can usually facilitate this with personal contact and introductions.

Scholarships, funding and ESRC recognition

There are a number of scholarships available to research (and MSc) students at SOAS. Please see Scholarships and Bursaries for further information. But it is a condition of acceptance that students embarking upon a research degree have the capacity to fund the full duration of their studies. There may be some paid opportunities for teaching, normally not in the first year, but these cannot be relied upon and will not begin to cover fees and maintenance fully.

The research degree embodies a core of training in research methods combined with a clear structure of progression thereafter. The training components are explained below. The duration and structure of the research degree will be as follows:

Full time research degree: 3 years plus 1 year writing up

Year 1 -  research training.

Research students will take the 'Research Methods for Development Economics' course in the Economics Department.

Year 1 -  Upgrade

Students will normally be expected to pass an upgrade from MPhil to PhD status within 9 months of commencing the degree.

Year  2-3 -  Research

Core research undertaken; primary and secondary data collection as appropriate, thesis chapters finalised.

Year 4 -  Write up

If necessary a fourth year can be taken to write the final thesis. Examination of the thesis will take place after submission within the 4th year.

Part-time research degree: 6 years, plus 1 year writing up

The research degree can be undertaken over 6 years:

  • Research Methods course must be taken over the first two years.
  • Upgrade  will take place withing the 21 months after initial registration.
  • Examination  will take place after submission within the writing-up year (year 7) at the latest.

Teaching and learning

Research training in development economics.

All research students are expected to attend a dedicated research student seminar. In addition, a separate programme of research training is offered for first-year students. The sessions will deal with theoretical and methodological issues in Economics and Development Economics, as well as subject-specific guidance on other generic research skills (such as literature reviews, fieldwork planning).

In addition, students will attend a termly Development Economics research day, where there will be a mediated discussion of theoretical and methodological issues faced and an opportunity for students to present their own research. Students will also attend the general Research Students Seminar that provides a range of input for all stages in the completion of a PhD and Early Career Development for Development Economists.

  • to encourage and enable students to complete an original thesis in the expected time.
  • to provide training and experience in fieldwork and across a variety of schools of economics and in a variety of statistical techniques.
  • to allow flexibility in training to suit students with different backgrounds and subsequent research needs.
  • to make available and to monitor first class research supervision with the involvement of at least two members of staff through individual Research Student Supervisory Committees.
  • to encourage knowledge of other relevant disciplines and the adoption of an interdisciplinary approach where appropriate.
  • to equip students with the ability to assess one another's work critically, whether in response to written or spoken presentation.
  • to obtain language skills as appropriate.
  • to ensure students experience a congenial and productive environment for the conduct of research through availability of a wide range of facilities and full participation in the intellectual life of the Department and School.  Library facilities are outstanding and computing facilities are attuned to student needs.
  • to emphasise the relevance of research to theoretical, empirical and policy issues.
  • to draw upon the Department's particular strengths, especially its expertise in different approaches to economic problems and its experience in problems of development, specific regions, and comparative analysis.
  • to involve students in the specialised Centres of the School where appropriate.
  • to advise on publication and career progression.

A broader student-tailored programme of training needs can also be established in the first weeks of study, with a range of courses available from the Department’s MSc programmes. To this end, all students should undertake a Training Needs Analysis with their supervisor in the first weeks of Term 1 .

Supervision

1. The role of the second and third members of the Supervisory Committee (SC) Will be focused on the following two core tasks:

  • Participate in the upgrade process of the student, including the final decision relating to his/her transfer from MPhil to PhD.
  • Participate in other dicisions relating to his/her eligibility for enrolment on Extension of Writing-up (Continuation) Status or, where necessary, termination of registration.

2. In addition to these core roles, the second and third members of the SC may be expected to:

  • Enhance or augment the supervision of the student by contributing addition guidance and expertise, if required/sought by the student and/or the supervisor throughout the time of active research.
  • To act on behalf of the supervisor during unforeseen periods of absence. This role will have be agreed by consent of all parties (student, supervisor and the two members of the SC) and one of the two members will be designated as cover in absence for the period in question.

3. Only rarely is joint supervision allowed, for which a strong case would need to be made. Whilst the primary responsibility for guiding student's research and to review written work and progress rests with the supervisor, once upgrade is successfully completed, other members of the supervisory committee must receive the student’s thesis drafts at appropriate times, with support also available to students from the Departmental Empirical Support Committee (DESC).

Computing facilities

Full computing facilities are available to postgraduate students. Computers dedicated for the use of research students in the Economics Department are also available. Software available includes word-processing and specialised statistical, econometrics and spreadsheet packages. The School’s computing staff are on hand to assist with general computing problems.

SOAS Library

SOAS Library is one of the world's most important academic libraries for the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, attracting scholars from all over the world. Fully Funded PhD Programs in Economics

phd scholarship in development economics

Last updated May 13, 2022

Following ProFellow Founder Dr. Vicki Johnson’s article on How To Fully Fund Your PhD , we began a series on fully-funded PhD programs in various disciplines. In this article, you’ll learn about the many fully-funded PhD Programs in Economics that are available.

We have many fellowships for doctoral study and dissertation research in the ProFellow database ; however, external doctoral fellowships are highly competitive and are usually short-term. Therefore, we recommend researching PhD programs that provide full funding to all incoming PhD students. “Full funding” typically includes full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the four to six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why we recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Below is a list of universities that offer full funding to all of the admitted students to their PhD Programs in Economics:

Would you like to receive the full list of more than 1000+ fully funded programs in 60 disciplines? Download the FREE Directory of Fully Funded Graduate Programs and Full Funding Awards !

1. Cornell University, Department of Economics

(Ithaca, NY): Financial aid packages for incoming students are typically guaranteed, given satisfactory performance, through the Spring semester of the fifth year of study. Graduate research and teaching assistantships cover tuition, as well as an academic year stipend and medical insurance.

2. Harvard University, Department of Economics

(Cambridge, MA): Economic students receive full tuition and stipend support while they are enrolled and making satisfactory progress toward their PhD degree.

3. University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, PhD in Applied Economics

(Philadelphia, PA): All admitted Wharton doctoral students are provided guaranteed funding for five years that covers the cost of tuition, fees, health insurance, and a stipend. In contrast with other top Economics PhD programs, Wharton only requires one semester of teaching assistant work during the program’s third year, and one semester of research or teaching assistant work during the fourth year.

4. Vanderbilt University, PhD in Law and Economics

(Nashville, TN): Students are fully funded by a competitive package of fellowship support covering tuition and stipend for both degrees.

5. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, PhD in Economics

(Cambridge, MA): Scholarship offers include full tuition for the academic year, health insurance, and a stipend/salary to cover living expenses for the nine-month academic year. Continuation of financial aid for years two through five is dependent on satisfactory academic progress. In the third through fifth year, financial aid typically takes the form of a Teaching or Research Assistantship. The 9-month stipend for teaching assistantships is about $35,000.

6. Fordham University, PhD in Economics

(New York City, NY): Fordham offers a 3-year fellowship package with optional funding for two to three additional years.

7. Binghamton University, PhD in Economics

(New York, NY): Approximately two-thirds of full-time Ph.D. students in the Economics Department are supported by fellowships and assistantships carrying an annual stipend plus a tuition scholarship and medical insurance. These awards are based exclusively on academic merit.

8. Duke University, PhD in Economics

(Durham, NC): 90 percent of admitted students or more receive six years of funding, so long as they remain in good academic standing.

9. Rice University, PhD in Economics

(Houston, TX): All admitted students receive an offer of financial support covering five years in return for a teaching or research assistantship. Continuation of the financial support beyond the first year is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress. Funding may be available beyond the fifth year for students who show exceptional promise.

10. Emory University, PhD in Economics

(Atlanta, GA): Students in the Economics Ph.D. program at Emory typically receive full funding for five years through the Laney Graduate School, as long as they make good academic progress.

11. Columbia University, PhD in Economics

(New York, NY): Columbia offers multi-year financial aid packages to admitted students that include fellowships and appointments to teaching and/or research positions. PhD students receive an annual stipend, tuition, and health fees for five years if they remain in good academic standing.

12. University of Kansas, PhD in Economics

(Lawrence, KS): Each year, a class of 7-10 students is awarded full funding. The five-year financial support package typically includes a full tuition waiver, a paid assistantship position, funding for conference travel, and more.

13. University of Wisconsin-Madison, PhD in Economics

(Madison, WI): All students will automatically be considered for five years of funding during their doctoral studies. Admitted students receive a guarantee of support for years two through five, contingent on maintaining satisfactory academic progress.

14. Johns Hopkins University, PhD in Economics

(Baltimore, MD): The department guarantees financial support for a minimum of five years of graduate study through a teaching or research assistantship conditional on satisfactory performance. The departmental fellowship covers full tuition costs plus an annual stipend of $33,000 and full student health insurance coverage.

15. University of California-Santa Barbara, PhD in Economics

(Santa Barbara, CA): The Department expects to offer a full financial aid package to all accepted Ph.D. students, which will cover full tuition, health insurance, and a stipend. Financial aid packages, which are a combination of Teaching Assistantships and fellowship money, are guaranteed for five years for students making satisfactory progress.

Thanks for this article, I found it helpful.

You can add Yale and Princeton to this list (based on information available on October 13, 2016).

These might even apply more broadly than just the economics PhD program too!

Meng Chen | Assistant Professor of Psychology

Chen uses dynamic models to study changes in human behavior over time. She also develops tools for analyzing intensive longitudinal data. In particular, she examines the use of modeling and statistical methods to capture changes within individuals, differences between them, and processes across different time scales. Chen was born and raised in Dalian, China. She received her PhD in human development and family studies from Penn State University.

Wendy Cheng | Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity

Cheng is a geographer and scholar of ethnic and American studies. She is interested in how everyday landscapes of power and inequality are produced, and the ways in which relational, global and historical approaches to studies of race and ethnicity challenge hierarchies of power that are often taken for granted. These concerns are interwoven with an ongoing commitment to exploring forms of popular education and critical pedagogy. Her 2023 book _ Island X_ explores the compelling political lives of Taiwanese migrants who came to the United States as students from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Eduardo Romero Dianderas | Assistant Professor of Anthropology

Dianderas is a Peruvian anthropologist specializing in the study of tropical rainforests, global environmental governance and climate change politics, with a particular geographic concentration in the contemporary Amazon basin. His current book manuscript, _Calculating Amazonia, _examines how knowledge about tropical rainforests is being rearticulated today as Amazonia becomes a critical international site for climate change governance. He holds a PhD in sociocultural anthropology from Columbia University and previously served as a postdoctoral fellow in the USC Society of Fellows in the Humanities .

Joanna Huey | Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations

Huey studies legal institutions. Her research aims to produce policy-relevant findings that contribute to ongoing debates about the design of criminal justice institutions and procedures. Current projects examine processes for misconduct reporting, jury selection, plea bargains and sentencing. Huey received a PhD in social science from Caltech and a JD/MPP from Harvard Law School and the Harvard Kennedy School.

Sandy LaTourrette | Assistant Professor of Psychology

LaTourrette studies how humans learn language and use language to learn more about the world. His research uses behavioral and computational methods to determine how infants and children navigate the many challenges of language learning — including variation across speakers, language switching, and the ambiguity of most word-learning contexts. His work addresses how children learn the meanings of words and how labeling objects or individuals changes the way children categorize and remember them.

Kyuwon Lee | Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations

Lee’s research interests include bureaucratic and interest group politics in the United States. Her current research focuses on strategic interactions between bureaucracies and organized interests in settings such as government contracts, environmental regulatory enforcement and public advisory meetings. Her work leverages a range of research designs and data sources, including game theory, causal inference methods for observational data, and administrative data. She earned her PhD from the Wilf Family Department of Politics at New York University.

Joanne Nucho | Visiting Associate Professor of Anthropology

Nucho is an anthropologist and filmmaker who specializes in the politics of the built environment and infrastructure, nonfiction and experimental film and video as well as visual ethnography. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Lebanon and is the author of Everyday Sectarianism in Urban Lebanon: Infrastructures, Public Services and Power , part of the Princeton University Press series on culture and technology. Her current research focuses on energy transition in California. Her nonfiction and experimental films have screened in various contexts, including the London International Documentary Film Festival and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions.

Hrag Papazian | Turpanjian Early Career Chair in Contemporary Armenian Studies and Assistant Professor of Anthropology

Papazian researches Armenian experiences in contemporary Turkey. Examining various Armenian factions, including Christian Armenian and Muslim Armenian citizens of Turkey, as well as labor migrants from the Republic of Armenia in Istanbul, he studies intra-Armenian diversity, relations and boundaries. His research probes the official categorization of Armenian-ness and treatment of Armenians in post-genocide Turkey and addresses issues of religion, conversion, racialization, migration, citizenship, diasporicity, and activism. More recently, he has been conducting research in Armenia, studying Turkish Armenians who have established residence there and investigating perceptions of and attitudes towards Turkey and Turks in Armenian society and politics.

Estefania Castaneda Perez | Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations

Perez is an interdisciplinary scholar at the intersection of law, sociology and political science. Her research investigates how Latinx communities experience the law through policing and surveillance systems, and the consequences of these experiences on their racialization, well-being and legal consciousness. In particular, she focuses on the perspectives of transborder commuters, who are U.S. citizens and non-citizens that reside in Mexican border cities but regularly cross the border to the U.S. for work, education or commerce.

Daniela Urbina Julio | Assistant Professor of Sociology

Urbina studies family demography, gender inequality, education and quantitative methods. One strand of her work explores the demographic implications of the rise of women’s education relative to men in Latin America, particularly for union formation and within-household inequalities. A second strand focuses on the role of cultural beliefs about family and gender on assortative mating, the division of household labor, and students’ career choices. She completed a PhD in sociology and social policy at Princeton University and a masters in applied quantitative research at New York University.

Washington Monthly Ranks Elmira College Among Best Bachelor’s Colleges

Washington Monthly Ranks Elmira College Among Best Bachelor’s Colleges

The Washington Monthly released its national rankings on Monday, with Elmira College ranked at #11 out of 223 Best Bachelor’s Colleges in the nation.

Washington Monthy’s rankings specifically look at how well colleges recruit and graduate students of modest means, produce the scholarship and scholars that drive economic growth and human flourishing, and encourage students to be active citizens and serve their country.

According to the Washington Monthly website, “ We rank liberal arts colleges—four-year institutions that award almost exclusively bachelor’s degrees and that focus on arts and sciences rather than professional programs—based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research, and promoting public service.”

Helping EC perform well in the Washington Monthly’s rankings is a strong focus on community engagement and internship experiences. Undergraduate students are required to complete a set amount of community engagement hours and 97% of students complete at least one internship, both of which help build essential skills for career success. EC also places a high priority on research opportunities, with many faculty working closely with students on projects, often co-authoring research papers and co-presenting at national conferences.

Washington Monthly Ranks Elmira College Among Best Bachelor’s Colleges

Elmira College also launched its Soaring Eagles Take Flight initiative in 2023. In this program, EC covers out-of-pocket costs for undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees for eligible incoming undergraduate New York State students.

“These rankings speak directly to the four-year cost and value of an Elmira College degree,” said Dennis Kelly, Vice President of Enrollment Management at Elmira College. “The professional pathways that EC has developed for students, combined with hands-on learning experiences, give them opportunities for graduate and career advancement, all while maintaining one of the most affordable undergraduate tuition prices of any four-year private college or university in the region.”
