They made the online application easy and transparent, and provided timely updates throughout the entire process. I was also able to receive my acceptance notice earlier than if I had simply applied for the program directly through the International Students' Office. I felt my application was prioritized and CUCAS agents responded politely to all my inquiring emails. Though the formalities fee is a bit high, it's all worth it for the excellent service! CUCAS is able to communicate directly with the department concerned, which saved a lot of headache on my part. I couldn't have realized my dream of attending graduate school in China without CUCAS! -Sue ”

Study Ph.D. in China: Requirements and Application Process

You should consider doing your doctorate in China! But why? We will answer this question in this article.

Since China has emerged as a global leader in research and higher education in recent years, it is a fact that a significant number of international students are eager to pursue their doctorate in China. Furthermore, China has evolved into an appealing option for international applicants to further their professions due to the considerable support that the Chinese government provides to educational institutions.

The following discussion will undoubtedly help you in advancing your goals to get a doctorate in China if you’re looking for such an option. Alright, let’s get going!

Ph.D. Degree Admission Requirements

We will now discuss the paperwork needed to apply to Chinese universities for a Ph.D.:

1. Application Form

Every university offers an application portal where international students can apply with ease by completing an online form. You typically need to register and log in to the university application portal to submit your application. You must be very clear with the details you enter in the form.

2. Transcripts and Certificates

Your academic records from every previous school you have attended must be submitted. Certificates, transcripts, and other relevant documentation for master’s and bachelor’s degrees fall under this category. If your university provides you with the original document in your mother tongue, you must find a qualified translator to translate it into Chinese or English.

3. Curriculum Vitae

Your curriculum vitae (CV), which should include a summary of your interests and some of your accomplishments in extracurricular and academic areas, may be required by the university. A CV is a summary of all the facts an assessor needs to know about you. Just a summary of your academic background.

4. Research Proposal

The most important section of the entire application is the research proposal, where you should include a concise description of your research and how this research will benefit society as a whole. This study proposal may hold the key to securing outstanding funds.

5. Letters of Recommendation

One of the most crucial documents your recommenders can provide to the institution to demonstrate your commitment to learning is a r ecommendation letter . If you have any previous work experience, you may also submit a letter of recommendation from your manager. Each candidate should carefully choose recommenders who have a deeper understanding of the student.

6. Passport Copy

It may be necessary for you to upload copies of your passport or National Identity Card to the application website. If your place of residence and your nation of birth are different, you can additionally be required to provide proof of residency along with submitting your parents’ identities.

Furthermore, depending on the university and program, admission standards can differ and even have special requirements. For instance, Zhejiang University mandates an SOP of at least 1,500 words, yet Tsinghua University ‘s Ph.D. requirements for SOP do not specify a word count.

Language Proficiency Tests Needed for Doctoral Studies

The completion of studies in English-taught programs in China requires all international applicants to speak the language proficiently. This is optional if you are applying for a Ph.D. in a language other than English. Otherwise, you must be proficient in English, either as a native speaker or with the necessary documentation to support your proficiency.

You can take the TOEFL or IELTS , two internationally recognized examinations of English language skills. A better score will enable you to demonstrate why you are the best applicant. For example, a minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL or 6.0 on the IELTS is required by Peking University , one of the best universities in China .

Other universities like Zhejiang University offer some of their doctoral degrees in Chinese. You must have sufficient knowledge of the language to pursue the programs.

 Ph.D. Degree Application Process

We will now go over the procedures required to apply to Chinese universities for a Ph.D.:

Step 1. Create a List of Preferred Chinese Universities

When deciding whether to pursue a Ph.D. in China, you should first identify universities that allow doctorate students and make a list of the ones that provide Ph.D. programs in fields that interest you. This stage should be done a few months before applying , as you need to choose your research ideas based on the available Ph.D. positions. Thus, you must have adequate time to plan your research strategy and draft an appropriate research proposal for submission.

Step 2. Choose the Subject of Research

Ph.D. applications are required in different ways by different universities. While several universities accept candidates with open arms, many others have authorities that clearly outline the research topic. Choose the topic where you will conduct a fresh study and make a contribution to society based on your preferences. Never forget that to be accepted into a university, your research topic needs to be captivating and engaging enough.

Step 3. Gather All Documents

The necessary paperwork must be acquired and ready in advance. Most of the time, bright applicants lose out on excellent chances because of incomplete applications. Make sure to regularly review the deadlines and take appropriate action.

Step 4. Apply for Early Application

Applying on time doesn’t work every time; you need to submit your application early. The majority of applicants for a Ph.D. are highly educated and highly capable of submitting outstanding research proposals. Thus, you should apply for the program as soon as possible to increase your chances of being chosen for a doctorate post.

Step 4. Stay Alert

Please be informed of the decision of your application after it has been submitted, and keep an eye on your email and application site to determine whether your supervisor or the university requires any additional paperwork. A lack of response often results in the university dropping an applicant’s application.

You won’t believe the abundance of opportunities that await you in China. Thus, don’t wait to fulfill your ambition of earning a Ph.D. in China.

FAQs: Ph.D. Application Process in China

Is it expensive to study ph.d. in china.

The Chinese government unquestionably appreciates the contribution made to international learners by providing considerable financing ( scholarships ) to the most deserving Ph.D. candidates. The cost of a Ph.D. program may differ based on the subject of study. Compared to other academic areas, tuition fees are lower for arts and humanities courses.

The most expensive Ph.D. programs in terms of tuition are often those in medicine, followed by science and engineering. However, the range for tuition fees would normally range between 16,000 to 45,000 RMB every year. As an example, Ph.D. students at Tsinghua University , one of the greatest universities in China, must pay an annual tuition of 40,000 RMB.

We hope this article on the application and requirements for studying for a Ph.D. in China was helpful. For additional details regarding educational opportunities, please visit the Available Programs for international students!

Ph.D. in Chinese Literature and Culture

The Ph.D. program is designed to prepare students for a doctoral degree in Chinese literature and culture.

Students should consult the most up-to-date version of the degree plan on the Stanford Bulletin  as well as the EALC Graduate Handbook . Each student should meet with their faculty advisor at least once per quarter to discuss the degree requirements and their progress.

Admission to Candidacy

Candidacy is the most important University milestone on the way to the Ph.D. degree. Admission to candidacy rests both on the fulfillment of department requirements and on an assessment by department faculty that the student has the potential to successfully complete the Ph.D.

Following University policy ( GAP 4.6.1 ), students are expected to complete the candidacy requirements by Spring Quarter of the second year of graduate study.

Pre-Candidacy Requirements

  • CHINLANG 103 - Third-Year Modern Chinese, Third Quarter (5 units)
  • CHINLANG 103B - Third-Year Modern Chinese for Bilingual Speakers, Third Quarter (3 units)
  • CHINA 208 - Advanced Classical Chinese: Philosophical Texts (3-5 units)
  • CHINA 209 - Advanced Classical Chinese: Historical Narration (2-5 units)
  • CHINA 210 - Advanced Classical Chinese: Literary Essays (2-5 units)
  • CHINLANG 225 - Chinese through Modern Fiction (3 units)
  • CHINLANG 251 - Chinese for Academic Discussion and Reading (2 units)
  • EALC 201 - Proseminar in East Asian Humanities I: Skills and Methodologies (3 units)
  • EALC 202 - Proseminar in East Asian Humanities II: Current Scholarship (1 unit)
  • Four courses numbered above 200 in the field of China studies, at least two of which must be listed with the CHINA  subject code, and the other two of which may be in different sub-fields such as anthropology, art history, history, philosophy, political science, religious studies, or another relevant field, as approved by the student’s advisor.

All doctoral students must complete an MA qualifying paper. An MA thesis is accepted instead of a qualifying paper for students initially admitted as EALC MA students. Students seeking an MA en route to the PhD must secure approval from the primary advisor and submit an MA thesis.

A graded MA qualifying paper or thesis must be submitted to the DGS and SSO with an accompanying note from the student’s primary advisor by week five of spring quarter of the second year of study for the annual review and candidacy decision.

During the quarter when students complete the MA qualifying paper or thesis (25-30 pages), they must enroll in EALC 299 .

Teaching Requirement

  • DLCL 301 - The Learning and Teaching of Second Languages (3 units)
  • Demonstrate pedagogical proficiency by serving as a teaching assistant for at least three quarters, starting no later than autumn quarter of the third year of graduate study. The department may approve exceptions to the timing of the language teaching requirement.

Post-Candidacy Requirements

Demonstrate proficiency in at least one supporting language (beyond the near-native level required in Chinese and English) to be chosen in consultation with the primary advisor according to the candidate’s specific research goals. For this supporting language (typically Japanese, Korean, or a European language), students must be proficient at a second-year level at the minimum; a higher level of proficiency may be required depending on the advisor’s recommendation. Reading proficiency must be certified through a written examination or an appropriate amount of coursework to be determined on a case-by-case basis. This requirement must be fulfilled by the end of the fourth year of graduate study.

Students in Chinese literature must take CHINA 291 - The Structure of Modern Chinese (2-4 units). Literature students must also take at least one EALC course in a field different from the student’s primary specialization (e.g., a modern literature course for students specializing in premodern literature, and vice versa, or a course in Japanese or Korean literature).

Complete two relevant seminars at the 300 level. EALC 200  may be substituted for one of these two seminars.

Pass three comprehensive written examinations, one of which tests the candidate’s methodological competence in the relevant discipline. The remaining two fields are chosen, with the approval of the student’s advisor, from the following: Chinese literature, Japanese literature, Korean literature, archaeology, anthropology, art history, comparative literature, communication, history, linguistics, philosophy, and religious studies. With the advisor’s approval, a PhD minor in a supporting field may be deemed equivalent to completing one of these three examinations.

Students should submit a dissertation prospectus before advancing to Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) status. The prospectus should comprehensively describe the dissertation project and include sections on the project rationale, key research questions, contributions to the field, a literature review, a chapter-by-chapter outline, a projected timeline, and a bibliography.

Pass the University Oral Examination (dissertation defense). General regulations governing the oral examination are found in Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures ( GAP 4.7.1 ). The candidate is examined on questions related to the dissertation after acceptable parts have been completed in draft form.

Following university policy ( GAP 4.8.1 ), submit a dissertation demonstrating the ability to undertake original research based on primary and secondary materials in Chinese.

All students in the Ph.D. program in modern Chinese literature must pass three comprehensive written examinations (a.k.a. field exams or qualifying exams) by the end of their ninth quarter: Theory, Literature, and X. The theory exam tests the student’s competence in the fundamental methods and issues of literary and cultural studies. The literature exam tests the student’s familiarity with the basic canon of modern Chinese literature, representative texts in his or her own area/period/genre of interest, and the core secondary scholarship of the field. The third field (X) may be chosen, with the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies in consultation with the student’s primary advisor from the following: comparative literature, premodern Chinese literature, linguistics, history, film, art history, philosophy, religious studies, archaeology, anthropology, political science, sociology, Japanese literature, Korean literature, FGSS, environmental humanities, digital humanities, or medical humanities. It is the student’s responsibility to secure a faculty member’s (EALC or non-EALC) consent to supervise the third exam. With the primary advisor's approval, a Ph.D. minor in a supporting field may be deemed equivalent to the completion of the third exam. Comprehensive/field exams must be completed before students can register for TGR; students should take their first field exam at the latest in the spring or summer quarter of their second year to be on track to complete all three exams by or before the end of their third year.

Students should prepare for each exam by taking the following steps:

  • Prepare a reading list. Start with the core list and add 10-20 more titles that pertain directly to his/her own area/period/genre of interest; the list should be organized into 4-5 topics and must conform to a standard bibliographical style. Submit the list to both the primary advisor and field supervisor (if different) for approval.
  • Set a date for the exam. Two weeks prior to the exam date, submit a list of 4-5 discursive questions each keyed to a topic in the reading list.
  • On the day of the exam, the student receives three or four questions from which s/he chooses to answer two. Each exam essay should be 5-6 pages, double-spaced, and proofread. Footnote citations or a works cited list is not necessary. The allotted time for each exam is 4 hours with a half hour break. The exam may be administered by email.

The exam essays are evaluated for breadth, accuracy, and analytical acumen. Students will be graded on a scale from Fail to Pass and Pass with Distinction. A student who receives the "Fail" grade will be placed on probation and must retake the exam within three months. A second "Fail" grade will result in dismissal from the program.

The Dissertation Prospectus Defense constitutes the first step toward faculty approval for the student’s proposed dissertation project and should be completed before or soon after the student applies for external funding to conduct doctoral research - typically by Winter quarter of the fourth year, or no later than Spring quarter of the fourth year. The defense is a two-hour oral exam conducted by the student’s dissertation reading committee (minimum of three faculty members, including the primary advisor). The prospectus, 12-15 pages not including bibliography, must be submitted to the committee members at least two weeks prior to the defense.

Chinese Embassy or Consulate or at the Chinese diplomatic mission

You can submit your visa application form at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate or at the Chinese diplomatic mission in your home country. In case you cannot come personally for the submission, you can send it through a travel agency or a visa agency for submission on your behalf. Remember that applications sent by post are not accepted by most of the Chinese Embassies or Consulates.

How to make the application?

You can download the visa form here: http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/visas/fd . Fill the visa application form carefully and accurately on your computer. • Living in China – A Guide for PhD Students

Written by Ben Taylor

China combines innovation and tradition like few other countries on the planet. Ancient temples, soaring skyscrapers, stunning countryside – PhD students living here certainly won’t be short of places to visit and things to do during their studies.

This page will give you a guide to everything you should know about moving to China for a doctorate, from culture and travel to visas and accommodation.

On this page

Student life.

China is a huge country and chances are you’ll barely scratch the surface of everything there is to experience during your PhD. Don’t let that put you off exploring, though! Chinese culture is a unique fusion of hi-tech gadgetry and ancient traditions.

From the Great Wall and Beijing’s Forbidden City to the pristine bamboo forests of the Chinese wilderness, studying a PhD in China will be an unforgettable opportunity to experience a place like no other.

Culture and tourism

Beijing and Shanghai are China’s two biggest cities and its primary tourist hubs. Visitors to Beijing can explore the aforementioned Forbidden City, a UNESCO-listed palace complex that was home to generations of emperors. The Temple of Heaven is another architectural highlight, a group of sacred buildings surrounded by tranquil gardens.

In Shanghai, you can visit the world’s second tallest building or stroll along the vibrant waterfront Bund district.

Outside of China’s bustling metropolises, the Chinese countryside is endlessly varied, encompassing desert, jungle, snow-capped mountains and sandy beaches. Remember to pack your hiking boots for when you want a break from the lab / library!

Sport and leisure

The 2008 Beijing Olympics left a strong legacy in China – not least the striking Bird’s Nest stadium. Athletics, gymnastics and martial arts are among the most popular sporting activities in the country.

In recent years, the Chinese Super League has made waves in the world of football, attracting plenty of star players and managers.

Food and drink

China’s food markets are a feast for the senses. Whether you want to try out Peking duck in Beijing or some sizzling Szechuan cuisine in the south-west of the country, you’ll find plenty of familiar (and unfamiliar!) things to eat.

Accommodation

PhD students at Chinese universities have plenty of accommodation to choose from, from on-campus dormitories and studios to off-campus flats in the heart of the city.

On-campus housing

Most universities have dedicated on-campus accommodation for students, with rooms costing between 25 RMB and 150 RMB (USD $3.70 to $21.50) per day. The price depends on things like whether you’re sharing your flat with a roommate or whether you have an en-suite bathroom. Some universities may even have accommodation pitched at international students in particular, or aimed at postgraduates.

CUCAS , the official Chinese university application portal, can help international students book university dormitories.

Off-campus housing

Living off-campus is also an option for international PhD students in China. Check expat websites for English-language listings. In Beijing, expect to pay between 1,500 RMB and 3,000 RMB (USD $205 to $410) per month for a room.

Living costs

China is an affordable place to live and study by Western standards. As with most countries, you’ll find that the major cities like Beijing and Shanghai are markedly more expensive than elsewhere in China, especially in terms of rent.

Prices in China

This table should give you a rough idea of what you’ll pay for various student essentials in China.

Student Cost of Living in China - 2024
25.00 RMB (USD $3.70)
50 RMB (USD $7.20)
200 RMB (USD $28.21)
387.44 RMB (USD $554.48)
.

Working during your PhD

The Chinese Government has relaxed restrictions on international students working during their studies in recent years, allowing students in Beijing and Shanghai to undertake part-time work as long as they have permission from their university and the relevant administrative authorities.

Common examples of part-time work in China include teaching English and internships. For more information on the regulations, please check with your university’s international office.

It’s fairly simple to open a bank account in China. Just visit the local branch of the bank you want to join with the following documents:

  • A valid passport
  • Your student visa
  • Proof of residence

ATMs are plentiful in large cities and towns, but make sure that you always carry some cash with you. Mobile apps are becoming increasingly popular as a way of paying for good and services – WeChat and Alipay are the most common examples. Apple Pay can also be used in some stores.

As the third-largest country in the world, travel in China can seem a daunting prospect. However, China has invested heavily in high-speed travel between its major cities, so making the most of your time here shouldn’t be too difficult.

Rail travel

China has an extensive rail network populated by state-of-the-art, high speed trains. You can travel between Beijing and Shanghai in a little over four hours by taking the world’s fastest passenger train, clocking in at 350 km/h. Tickets are reasonably priced but can sell out – you should book as far in advance as you can.

If you want to travel to the far reaches of China, the country is serviced by plenty of domestic flights, with every major city having its own airport. Bear in mind that delays can be fairly frequent, while trains are almost always on time.

Inner-city travel

When getting around Chinese cities, driving a car is best left to all but the bravest – or most foolhardy – PhD students.

Many cities have their own underground or metro networks, while taxis are cheap and plentiful. Alternatively, try out one of the countless bike-sharing apps operating in Chinese cities.

Jeff Wilson MD, PhD, and Corinne Keet, MD, PhD, Were Awarded $4.1 Million Multi-PI Grant

Jeff Wilson MD, PhD, an assistant professor in the UVA Department of Medicine Division of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, and Corinne Keet, MD, PhD, from the University of North Carolina, were awarded a $4.1 million multi-PI grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study common food allergens and their potential association with cardiovascular disease.

Food allergies that result in allergic symptoms, such as hives, swelling or anaphylaxis, are relatively uncommon in adults. However, nearly 1 in 5 adults are ‘silently’ producing IgE antibodies to food allergens without showing any overt symptoms. Recent work by Dr. Wilson and colleagues discovered a previously unrecognized link between IgE antibodies to cow’s milk and other common food allergens and an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. This association was found by measuring antibodies in banked blood samples from over 5,000 adults who were followed longitudinally for about 15 years. The strength of the relationship with cardiovascular mortality was similar to well known risk factors for heart disease, including smoking, diabetes and hypertension and was most pronounced in those who ate the foods that were targeted by their IgE antibodies. The finding suggests an opportunity for precision nutritional prevention of cardiovascular disease and was recently covered by 125 new outlets, including U.S. News and World Report.

The new NIH funding allocates $1.7 million of the award to support Dr. Wilson’s work at UVA as he takes the next critical steps to understanding the relationship between food specific IgE and atherosclerotic plaque resulting in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Wilson’s research is also supported by a UVA Strategic Investment Fund Prominence to Preeminence Award: Immunology, Imaging and Informatics for Precision ImmunoMedicine ( iPRIME) , which provides investigators an ecosystem of support personnel — from the clinical side of consenting patients and reading complex imaging to banking the high-quality samples at the bench. Over 600 samples from the Coronary Assesssment in VA (CAVA) cohort will be used to examine the relationship between IgE to food allergens and atherosclerotic plaque.

Additional UVA collaborators on this project include Coleen McNamara, MD, Todd Villines, MD, Ani Manichaikul, PhD, and Thomas Platts-Mills, MD.
