The youth comprise a significant proportion of every society. Youth can be defined as a group of young people who are in the transitional stage from childhood to adulthood and are considered to be the most energetic. It is a stage during which the young people try to define their identity and prepare them for citizenship and adulthood (Shamsie, 2006). However, it has not been easy to fix the definition of youth in chronological terms. In most countries, the age of the youth is drawn at the time when an individual is treated equally under the law, normally referred to as the age of majority. Many countries place it at age 18 and beyond this age, one is considered an adult. It is therefore important to note that the definition of the term youth depends greatly on the socio-cultural, political, institutional, and economic factors of a given country. The working chronological age for the purposes of this essay is between the ages 15 and 29, which is used mainly by most National Youth Councils. This essay will discuss some problems facing the youth and why this crisis appears to be a major concern for adult society.

There are a number of problems encountered by the youth of today all over the world. Unemployment is one of the major problems facing today’s young generation (Shamsie, 2006). Every young person must be prepared to overcome the challenges of adolescence and adulthood. This means that he or she must engage in progressive experiences and activities which will, in turn, enable him or her to become socially, emotionally, morally, economically, physically, as well as cognitively competent. As one approaches the mid-20s, he or she starts experiencing the transition from schooling to work. Many young people at this age would be expected to secure a job and earn instead of the continued reliance on the parents or guardians. This trend in most instances is hampered by the lack of job opportunities for a large number of young people in society.

Difficulty in securing a place of work implies that the youth can hardly get a stable source of income for personal use and even for the other dependents like the parents or siblings. This is despite the fact that a lot of resources are injected towards educating them. The fact that many young people lack a stable source of income and yet they are the most energetic members of society is ridiculous. A number of youth resort to other alternative ways of survival like theft, forceful robbery, carjacking, and other illegal deals that will enable them to get the money that they desperately need. This is one concern that threatens the fabric of society especially the adult members of the society. The problem is worsened by the fact that there are many young people who are faced with the same problem and hence adding to the magnitude of illegal incidences. In most countries, therefore, the problem of unemployment among the youth has become a major concern of the adult society especially the governments (White, 1999).

Furthermore, unemployment can become the genesis of all other sorts of problems that face the youth. Young people who fail to prosper in society may end up despairing in life and may start smoking, using alcohol, and the use of other drugs. This is common among the youth who leave schooling at an early age and hence can get no meaningful employment. The use of drugs among the youth results in a less productive generation of young people who should otherwise be the building stones for a more stable society. Any adult society, therefore, ought to be concerned about this major problem that faces the youth since they are expected to be the society’s tomorrow.

For the female youth, difficult times at this particular stage may force them to engage in promiscuous activities like sex for pay, and these results in unwanted pregnancies and the contraction of sexually transmitted diseases. The general loss of morality among the young people can plunge the whole generation into enormous problems like increased psychological distress and other mental problems, HIV/AIDS prevalence among the youth, and criminal activities that may ruin a whole generation (White, 1999). These youth problems in many countries appear to be of major concern for adult society.

It is therefore paramount for every society to rise up and address the plight of the young people if it is to prosper to greater heights. This will call for the creation of job opportunities in society and empowering the youth through training on entrepreneurial skills. This will go a long way in ensuring that the society gets proper continuity through its youth.

The social impact of youth

Seyedmohammadmahan Mir Nasiri

As the  youth  grows more aware of the world’s crisis, it is leading to a shift in the holistic perspective of our society. Increasingly, teenagers are becoming proactive about making an environmental difference wherever they can by choosing eco-friendly products and activities. This has resulted in an exponential rise in youth involvement with socio-environmental changes.

Teenagers are now more vocal than ever before, taking a stand on issues that matter and striving to ensure a healthier future for generations to come. It is safe to say that the power of the younger generations is helping foster fundamental changes in attitudes toward humanity and nature. In conclusion, it is clear that there is a great social impact associated with giving the right direction to teenagers who have both the potential and vision to make a difference today.

Today’s youth are being called upon to rise up and make a difference in the world. As our planet faces an uncertain future, it’s more important than ever for the next generation of young people to do their part in preserving our planet’s ecology.

As members of the most tech-savvy generation yet, teenagers are increasingly aware of the negative impact that human activities have had on the environment. From driving eco-friendly cars to promoting green initiatives, there is a growing sense among this age group that they can make a positive social and environmental impact.

The youth’s enthusiasm and energy should be utilized as an impetus for more environmentally friendly practices throughout society. With their creativity and optimistic outlook, young people can make a genuine difference in countering climate change and protecting our planet from rising temperatures, melting glaciers, and other dangerous consequences of global warming.

In today’s world, the social impact of youth is undeniable. Teenagers and young adults are some of the most influential people in our society and they can play a major role in making positive changes when it comes to eco-friendly initiatives and other environment-related issues.

Young people have immense potential to make a difference by raising awareness, developing solutions, and educating others on their use. They are also instrumental in forming sustainable habits and encouraging future generations to act responsibly when it comes to preserving our planet. Moreover, their enthusiasm for unorthodox ways of promoting environmentalism can potentially lead to groundbreaking progress.

The social impact of youth is an important factor to consider in today’s society. As teenagers and young adults, we have the power to make a positive difference in our communities and the world. Our decisions can be impactful in many areas, from environmental sustainability to economic development. We can create eco-friendly initiatives that reduce waste and conserve energy. We can also use our voices to advocate for causes that are important to us, such as education reform or climate change action. By engaging with our peers, we can create meaningful dialogue about issues that matter to us and work together towards solutions. By being mindful of our actions and taking responsibility for them, we can be powerful agents of social change.

The social impact of youth is an important issue that needs to be addressed. Teenagers have a great potential to make a positive impact on our environment and society. They can use their energy, creativity, and enthusiasm to create meaningful change in the world around them.

Youth can play an important role in helping to create more eco-friendly communities by engaging in activities such as recycling, reducing waste, and participating in green initiatives. They can also use their voices to advocate for causes they care about and help spread awareness about important social issues. Additionally, teenagers can volunteer their time to help those less fortunate than them or participate in activities that will benefit their community as a whole.

Overall, the social impact of youth is immense and there are numerous ways they can be impactful both now and in the future.

As youths in modern society, it is important to understand our influence and how we could be impactful. We can use our platforms and our innate qualities to become agents of change. Through education on the environment and eco-friendly practices, teenagers can make a difference to their peers by providing them with more ways to be more sustainable. We have the power to create a better future for generations to come. We should also encourage youth to get involved in activities that will help shape their growth as individuals and inspire others around them. That way, young people could learn about civic engagement, and social justice issues, and be part of positive change in the world.

In today’s world, teenagers and young adults have become an important part of society. They come with innovative ideas, technological advancements, and a vision for the future. It is only fitting that we look at the impact that this age group can have on the social environment.

The youth plays an important role in shaping our society. They are the ones who provide much-needed insights about what works and what might not work for a particular community. As such, their ideas and words can influence peers, adults, and even policy decisions. So it becomes essential to gauge how they can be effective in creating an eco-friendly environment through action-oriented initiatives like reducing waste production or energy consumption.

This age group has a responsibility to create awareness among their peers, as well as take steps that are in line with environmental preservation practices. How they handle this responsibility will leave implications not just for themselves but also for the generations to follow them in time.

Today’s youth have the power to make a huge positive change in their environment. By making small sustainable lifestyle choices, they can have an impactful effect on reducing environmental impact and shaping their peers’ behavior for a brighter future. Taking eco-friendly initiatives like opting for public transport or commuting on a bike can be simple yet effective actions that can leave a lasting impact, which will benefit everyone involved. The collective social action of today’s teenagers is a testament to the fact that it is entirely possible to create lasting, meaningful changes by acting collectively.

It is a well-known fact that the youth of any country is a great asset. They are indeed the future of the country and represent it at every level. essay on role of youths in nation building

Role of Youth

The youth is important because they will be our future. Today they might be our partners, tomorrow they will go on to become leaders. The youths are very energetic and enthusiastic. They have the ability to learn and adapt to the environment . Similarly, they are willing to learn and act on it as well to achieve their goals.

Our youth can bring social reform and improvement in society. We cannot make do without the youth of a country. Furthermore, the nation requires their participation to achieve the goals and help in taking the country towards progress.

Likewise, we see how the development of any country requires active participation from the youth. It does not matter which field we want to progress in, whether it is the technical field or sports field, youth is needed. It is up to us how to help the youth in playing this role properly. We must make all the youth aware of their power and the role they have to play in nation-building.

Ways to Help the Youth

There are many ways in which we can help the youth of our country to achieve their potential. For that, the government must introduce programs that will help in fighting off issues like unemployment, poor education institutes and more to help them prosper without any hindrance.

Similarly, citizens must make sure to encourage our youth to do better in every field. When we constantly discourage our youth and don’t believe in them, they will lose their spark. We all must make sure that they should be given the wind beneath their wings to fly high instead of bringing them down by tying chains to their wings.

Furthermore, equal opportunities must be provided for all irrespective of caste, creed, gender , race, religion and more. There are various issues of nepotism and favoritism that is eating away the actual talent of the country. This must be done away with as soon as possible. We must make sure that every youth has the chance to prove themselves worthy and that must be offered equally to all.

In short, our youth has the power to build a nation so we must give them the opportunity. They are the future and they have the perspective which the older generations lack. Their zeal and enthusiasm must be channelized properly to help a nation prosper and flourish.

Building social cohesion and peace in Djibouti and Trinidad and Tobago

In a world that is constantly evolving, the role of youth in shaping the future of their communities is more crucial than ever. From advocating for social cohesion and peace to leading initiatives for gender equality, young people are taking charge and making a significant impact.

Here are five roles that the young people are playing in their communities, for a better future for all.

UNDP supports young people across the globe through its Funding Windows, primary thematic funding instrument that ensures the support goes to those who need it the most.

Young people play a vital role in building their communities and creating an inclusive and peaceful environment. Supporting them in developing the knowledge and skills to do so is a step towards them taking that role.

In Djibouti, young women are developing skills in civic tech to enhance their role as social cohesion promoters and contribute to transformative changes in building social contracts. 87 young women and 18 associations have successfully conducted activities to prevent inter-community violence, discourage school dropouts and drug consumption among young people, and promote environmental safeguarding.

Through the Peace Innovation Challenge in Trinidad and Tobago, more than 100 submissions were received from women, youth organizations and individuals. These proposals focused on promoting peace at the community level, with the best ideas receiving grants to implement them.

Securing work opportunities in Mali, Burkina Faso & Mauritania

Young people face the consequences of many global challenges such as the aftermath of the pandemic, the climate crisis and changing economic landscapes disproportionately, affecting their possibilities to gain decent employment and start their own businesses. Creating jobs opportunities for youth and building the skills of young people to start their own businesses is also opening up paths for economic empowerment and steering people away from radicalism, that often offers lucrative pathways for the disfranchised.

MOURAVAGHA is a national support system for young unemployed graduates in Mauritania. More than 9000 young graduates are developing their job search and application skills. The students were also placed in companies through internships that offer them job opportunities at the end.

Various cash-for-work projects provided job opportunities for more than 1,800+ young people in Mali and Burkina Faso. The young people, including women and youth that have been affected by crisis, engaged in waste management & collection activities as well as other public work programs. In the Seytenga and Falagountou communes of Burkina Faso,   young people gained more income and secured loans for further activities.

Conflict in Ethiopia has affected peoples' lives and how they earn their livings.

Acquiring skills for a better future in Ethiopia and Morocco

Young people’s creativity can open doors for a better future for all. Enabling young people to turn their ideas into reality, whether they be projects, policies or businesses, benefits both the young people and their communities. Entrepreneurship and vocational skills training can enable young people to open their own businesses.

The conflict in Ethiopia has affected the lives and livelihoods of both people and their businesses. Many rural youth are unemployed and have dropped out of school and are now without a job and source of income. This makes them vulnerable. Some 345 young people are now creating jobs for other youth after developing their skills in local businesses and receiving start-up capital. More than 400 women and young people, including survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, trained in vocational skills that would help them increase their income.

Youth Aspirations and Abilities to Advance Nationwide Innovation project works with young Moroccan leaders to support them develop social innovations and businesses that tackle the most pressing challenges in their communities. Among the most sought-after skills among young people are leadership and emotional intelligence as well as business innovation. Through extensive training and mentoring, 150 young people developed their skills.

Fighting gender-based violence in Chad and Colombia Young people are advocates for issues they are passionate about. They campaign and raise their voices in social media, organize events, and spread awareness.

In Chad and Colombia, more than 500 young people used their voices to fight gender-based violence.

A university advocacy contest gathered stories from students, inspiring others to join the movement in Chad. As a result, a campaign raised awareness of more than 19,000 people around women’s rights and gender-based violence.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in Colombia, young people talked about the prevention of violence in an online campaign, reaching thousands of views on social media.

Rehabilitating farmlands in Syria

Young people play many roles in their societies, from the fields to the parliaments.

One of these young people is Raneem, 20, from Syria [ . She is one of the 54 farmers who were able to reclaim their land through a well rehabilitation programme, that helped them to make the land fertile again. This has created an income for more than 2,000 labourers.

“We had no hope before the wells were rehabilitated. The land is now fertile. We plant different crops every season. We are also hiring other women to support us during harvest." -  Raneem

Supporting young people through Funding Windows

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is not possible without young people.

UNDP continues to support youth across the globe through its Funding Windows, its primary thematic funding instrument to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

"The young people were supported through the Governance, Peacebuilding, Crisis and Resilience Window in 2022 with our partners Denmark, Luxembourg, Republic of Korea, Sweden, and Switzerland. Together, we aim to create an environment where young people can thrive and have a say at the future of themselves and their communities."

Collection Civil Rights History Project

Youth in the civil rights movement.

At its height in the 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement drew children, teenagers, and young adults into a maelstrom of meetings, marches, violence, and in some cases, imprisonment. Why did so many young people decide to become activists for social justice? Joyce Ladner answers this question in her interview with the Civil Rights History Project, pointing to the strong support of her elders in shaping her future path: “The Movement was the most exciting thing that one could engage in.  I often say that, in fact, I coined the term, the ‘Emmett Till generation.’  I said that there was no more exciting time to have been born at the time and the place and to the parents that movement, young movement, people were born to… I remember so clearly Uncle Archie who was in World War I, went to France, and he always told us, ‘Your generation is going to change things.’”

Several activists interviewed for the Civil Rights History Project were in elementary school when they joined the movement. Freeman Hrabowski was 12 years old when he was inspired to march in the Birmingham Children’s Crusade of 1963. While sitting in the back of church one Sunday, his ears perked up when he heard a man speak about a march for integrated schools. A math geek, Hrabowski was excited about the possibility of competing academically with white children. While spending many days in prison after he was arrested at the march, photographs of police and dogs attacking the children drew nationwide attention. Hrabowski remembers that at the prison, Dr. King told him and the other children, “What you do this day will have an impact on children yet unborn.” He continues, “I’ll never forget that. I didn’t even understand it, but I knew it was powerful, powerful, very powerful.” Hrabowski went on to become president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he has made extraordinary strides to support African American students who pursue math and science degrees.

As a child, Marilyn Luper Hildreth attended many meetings of the NAACP Youth Council in Oklahoma City because her mother, the veteran activist Clara Luper, was the leader of this group. She remembers, “We were having an NAACP Youth Council meeting, and I was eight years old at that time. That’s how I can remember that I was not ten years old. And I – we were talking about our experiences and our negotiation – and I suggested, made a motion that we would go down to Katz Drug Store and just sit, just sit and sit until they served us.” This protest led to the desegregation of the drug store’s lunch counter in Oklahoma City.  Mrs. Hildreth relates more stores about what it was like to grow up in a family that was constantly involved in the movement.

While some young people came into the movement by way of their parents’ activism and their explicit encouragement, others had to make an abrupt and hard break in order to do so, with some even severing familial ties. Joan Trumpauer Mulholland was a young white girl from Arlington, Virginia, when she came to realize the hypocrisy of her segregated church in which she learned songs such as “Jesus loves the little children, red and yellow, black and white.” When she left Duke University to join the movement, her mother, who had been raised in Georgia, “thought I had been sort of sucked up into a cult… it went against everything she had grown up and believed in.  I can say that a little more generously now than I could have then.” Phil Hutchings’ father was a lifetime member of the NAACP, but couldn’t support his son when he moved toward radicalism and Black Power in the late 1960s. Hutchings reflects on the way their different approaches to the struggle divided the two men, a common generational divide for many families who lived through those times:  “He just couldn’t go beyond a certain point.  And we had gone beyond that… and the fact that his son was doing it… the first person in the family who had a chance to complete a college education. I dropped out of school for eleven years… He thought I was wasting my life.  He said, ‘Are you … happy working for Mr. Castro?’”

Many college student activists sacrificed or postponed their formal education, but they were also picking up practical skills that would shape their later careers. Michael Thelwell remembers his time as a student activist with the Nonviolent Action Group, an organization never officially recognized by Howard University and a precursor to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC): “I don’t think any of us got to Howard with any extensive training in radical political activism. By that I mean, how do you write a press conference [release]? How you get the attention of the press? How do you conduct a nonviolent protest? How do you deal with the police? How do you negotiate or maneuver around the administration? We didn’t come with that experience.” Thelwell’s first job after he graduated from college was to work for SNCC in Washington, D.C., as a lobbyist.

Similar reflections about young people in the freedom struggle are available in other collections in the Library.  One such compelling narrative can be found in the webcast of the 2009 Library of Congress lecture by journalist and movement activist, Tracy Sugarman, entitled, “We Had Sneakers, They Had Guns: The Kids Who Fought for Civil Rights in Mississippi.”    As is readily apparent from that lecture and the previous examples, drawn from the Civil Rights History Project collection, the movement completely transformed the lives of young activists.  Many of them went on to great success as lawyers, professors, politicians, and leaders of their own communities and other social justice movements. They joined the struggle to not only shape their own futures, but to also open the possibilities of a more just world for the generations that came behind them.

This study has been carried out to understand the priority initiatives that can be undertaken by the social economy organizations themselves and the institutions with educational tasks (university, secondary schools, training centres) to foster the meeting of the supply and employment de- mand for quali ed young people. The importance of the social economy for youth employment has grown in the recession years. While many enterprises were closing down or reducing sta numbers, many cooperatives and social enterprises in- creased their employees by as much as 2% per year, and in this study we even see cases where in the ve-year period from 2008 to 2012 employ- ment doubled. That big world of the social and solidaristic economy, consisting of non-pro t enterprises, associations, mutual foundations and ethical nance, etc. gives work to 14.5 million people in Europe. It has never been considered an economic element, but rather a social compo- nent. Over the last decades, it has proven to be an important actor in re- sponding to the need to expand youth employment. «The social economy [...] increased more than proportionately between 2002-03 and 2009- 10, increasing from 6% to 6.5% of total European paid employment and from 11 million to 14.5 million jobs» (European Commission, 2013c: 45). With this study, we intended to focus our attention on the impact that the social economy has on the employment of young people and, in particular, on how to scale down the barriers and obstacles that produce the mismatch between employment supply and demand, both in terms of the competences required by the labour market and produced by the training curricula, and of the ends and sense of the training courses and the need to prepare young people to enter and, above all, stay in the la- bour market. Hence, from all the material gathered, we have chosen to report and analyse the empirical material on 52 case studies relating to organizations operating in sectors with a hypothetically high potential for the expansion of employment among young people with or without suitable levels of education. Also coming about to aid the employment of non-skilled workers, the social economy has been characterized by a demand for competences that do not necessarily require a high level of quali cations. Howev- er, today, faced with the evolution in requirements from the popula- tion and institutions, it has ventured into areas and sectors that require growing levels of quali cations and specializations. The study of the employment trends in the sample in question provides a clear indica- tion that the increase in employment demand is mainly for young peo- ple with high skill levels. Starting from these premises, we tried to analyse and investigate some features of the demand for competences in the most important sectors of the social economy which, more than others, absorb the supply of workers with quali cations in the educational, training and social sec- tors. The aim of studying the demand was to draw indications on ways to build initial training curricula for some of the professional families required by this speci c sector of the labour market. As a whole, the in- vestigation is all the richer thanks to its comparative dimension, since it is based on ndings from the SALM project and takes into considera- tion the cases of organizations working in Portugal, Malta, Romania, Scotland, Spain and Tuscany. The work carried out enabled us to begin to gain a clearer de nition of the access to a speci c labour market, which is nevertheless of central importance for the sustainability of services for citizens. Where in Eu- rope, until two or three decades ago, support for the educational/training/ social care of the human person was theorized through state interven- tion and only possible in the most economically advanced countries, at present we are in a time, accelerated by the world crisis of 2007-2008, in which these educational, cultural, social and care services are man- aged by forms of a di erent economy from that of the nation-state. In this sense, it is important and strategic to understand the link between building employability for young people who want to enter this speci c labour market and the requests for competences coming from the em- ployers and the users of these markets, for the future of the educational professions, for the improvement of service quality standards, and for the personal and social well-being of all the actors who can and want to help innovate and transfer ideas and measures for the future of our so- cieties. In relation to this, given that measures are required to accom- pany young people in their integration in the labour market, we have developed, albeit not at a comparative level, applied research activities in the sphere of placement and job ‘formation’ in the educational and care professions. In addition, we have studied and tested a toolkit to improve the young people’s competences and employability, as well as their self- employment and entrepreneurship

The potential of young people to be agents of social and economic progress continues to be undermined by massive unemployment. According to statistics on the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender affairs website, youth unemployment in Kenya stands at 61%. This is very alarming yet according to the Global Youth Development Index and Report of 2016. Young people are a force for peace, democracy, equality and good governance, a catalyst for global consensus-building, and an essential resource for sustainable development and poverty eradication. It is interesting that among the unemployed youth are certificate, diploma and degree holders! Is there a disconnect between academic training and resultant qualifications on the one hand and youth employability on the other? Why are the youth unemployed when social media platforms, print and electronic media, and the internet are full of job advertisements day in day out? My hypothesis is that syllabi for the implementation of academic p...

Equal Participation Of Women Important For Better Society: Chief Justice

CJI said gender equality is a function not only of statistics but of lived realities of women (File)

There is no dearth of legal provisions to protect the interest of women in private and public spaces but law alone cannot make a just system, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said on Monday, stressing that society also has to shed its "patriarchal social attitude".

Speaking at News18 Network's She Shakti event, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said, "We must foster institutional and individual ability to look beyond the male default".

"There is no dearth of substantive and procedural legal provisions targeted towards protecting the interests of women in private and public situations. But good laws including the stringent laws alone do not make for a just society.

"Above all we need to change our mindsets. The mindsets must move from making concessions for women to recognising their entitlement to lead lives based on freedom and equality. We must zealously guard against apparently protective laws infringing women's liberties and choices," the CJI said.

Addressing the event, he said, "Talking about women's rights is not a women's thing. Some of the great life lessons I have learnt from my female colleagues." "I believe equal participation of women is important for a better society. Before we adopted the Constitution of India, the Indian Women's Charter of Life was drafted by Hansa Mehta, who was feminist," he added.

The CJI said issues of safety, equality of opportunity, dignity and empowerment are not subsets that ought to be discussed in silos. "Every one of us in the country has to be a part of this conversation." "Equal participation of women in governance, policy and leadership roles is positively linked to better development outcomes. When we either create or fail to address barriers in the path of women, we are jeopardizing our quest for a better society. Indifference is no longer an option," the CJI said.

He said there has been an increasing intake of women Civil Judges through exams -- 58 per cent of the total candidates in Rajasthan in 2023; 66 per cent of the appointments in Delhi in 2023, 54 per cent of the appointments in Uttar Pradesh in 2022 and 72 per cent of the total number of judicial officers appointed in Kerala are women.

Justice DY Chandrachud said the labour force participation of women is 37 per cent while the contribution of women to the GDP is 18 per cent.

"We have not exactly met the pre-independence hopes about women's economic participation. A part of the reason is the continued gendered allocation of domestic labour. Even as women are entering the workforce, they are never divorced from the domestic realm.

"They must simultaneously juggle domestic and care-giving chores. They are doubly burdened - almost as a penalty for transgressing the domestic threshold," he said.

The CJI said gender equality is a function not only of statistics but a function of lived realities of women.

"This also applies to assimilate traditionally excluded groups such as persons with disabilities, transgender and queer persons. Our expectations from these groups are heavily based on the stereotypical understanding of their supposedly innate tendencies.

"We fail to appreciate them as individuals. As women break rank and enter professional workspaces traditionally dominated by men, they are expected to act like men. Ironically enough, they are also tacitly expected to act like women, act-their-part, lest they upset the code of womanly conduct," he said.

He said that for a large part of their lives, institutions have operated in an information deficit about the objective abilities of women.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

"Women traditionally were not a priority in institutional design. Even as they break into elusive and exclusionary places, women are met with institutional apathy at best, and hostility at worst. The result is high attrition rates and professional stagnation in entry level and mid-level roles for women," Justice DY Chandrachud said.
