Essay on Traffic Problems

Could you please check my essay on traffic problems? 😊 It's my first text I am making to get ready for the IELTS test. I am going to leave it the way it is. I've spent 25 minutes to write it and +3 minutes for a quick check. My aim was to see how well I can write in the shortest period of time possible. The number of words is 362. (Yeah. I checked the amount of words after I finished writing, so now I know it's not that hard to write 250 words on a topic. Next time I'll try not to write that much) *** In order to solve traffic problems, governments should tax private car owners heavily and use the money to improve public transportation. What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a solution? Over the last few years, the number of car owners rapidly increased. It led to a rise of traffic problems, such as traffic jams, violation of parking regulations and road accidents. In order to ameliorate the situation, the government and the authorities are discussing the introduction of taxes for private car owners. They say the money paid by the drivers could be used to improve the transport situation. Is it really a solution for the issue? On the one hand, introducing extra taxes for drivers sounds like a good idea. The money could be used to repair the roads which are in poor condition at the moment. But on the other hand, repairing the roads will not make them wider. The actual problem is that streets and avenues in the center of the city were constructed without the anticipation of such an increase of number of vehicles on the city roads, in other worlds, the problem is not only in their condition, but in their width, which cannot be changed. In this case, the only solution would be building new bypass roads, so people who need to get from one part of the city to another could avoid having to drive through the historical center with its narrow streets and avenues. However, it would not solve the problem completely, as most of the people in our city work in the center, so traffic jams would be inevitable in the rush hours anyway. On the other hand, if the government uses the money they get from the tax-payer drivers would be invested in improving the infrastructure of public transport, we could see fewer cars on the street. It is obvious that the main reason we use private cars is the lack of good public transportation. If the government increases the number of buses and makes the bus routes better planned, people could choose using public transport during their everyday life and use their private cars only for other trips, for example to get to the countryside or another towns. To sum up, introducing the taxes might be a good idea, but the most important issue is to decide where to invest this money. (362 words) *** PS: I didn't read the essay on traffic problems posted here on the same topic before writing it. I really recommend doing the same: 1) read the topic; 2) write an essay of your own 3) then read the essay of another author to compare your vocabulary, ideas and structure.

Electric Cars Essay

Should only electric cars be allowed on the road?

Some people think that only electric cars should be allowed on the road by 2040. Do you agree or disagree? There are a lot of discussions about if there should only be electric cars on the road in the future. Electric cars are one of the most innovative inventions that were done in the XXI century. Despite the fact that many people think there would be lots of positive aspects, In my view it also has enough drawbacks. First reason why I disagree with this statement is the high price of electric cars. Electric cars are not only expensive by themselves, but also are rather complicated to maintain. Even if there would be analogs for Tesla, the most popular electrocar company, they require electrical charge, which surely costs more than simple gasoline cars. Moreover not every country in the world has electro-stations as it can be unprofitable and cost too much money. That means, it would be very hard to force people to refuse ordinary cars, and not every country would be able to afford it. Second thing I need to say is that electromobiles have limited speedrun up to 500 kilometers for premium brands, hence the cheaper the automobile, the less time it can last. It can be changed in the future, but nowadays they are not efficient in terms of daily lasting. On the other hand, electromobiles are obviously the best type of cars that can be offered in today's market for the environment. Although they require a lot of energy, it is generally better than gas and petrol that pollute the air with chemicals. Usage of electric automobiles can reduce carbon footprint. As well as that they can be charged with renewable energy and use things like solar power. In conclusion, this statement has both advantages and disadvantages. However, I suppose, it will take too much maintenance to change the whole car industry, as electric cars still have their downfalls.

Reliance on Cars

I am taking IELTS this coming Saturday and in need of comments for my essay writing. Please help! More and more people are relying on the private car as their major means of transportation. Describe some of the problems the reliance on cars can cause, and suggest at least one possible solution. The increasing preference of using private vehicles as the means of transportation has caused an array of issues in many parts of the world. This essay will examine some potential impacts that this trend has on society and suggest some feasible solutions to ameliorate such backlash. Predominantly, the rise of private vehicles has led to a number of issues which severely affect the quality of life of the people. To begin with, this trend is the root cause of traffic congestion in many metropolitan areas. More vehicles simply mean more traffic; road infrastructures are unable to keep up with such a sudden increase, thus lead to traffic jam. In addition, this malpractice is one of the contributing factors to pollution which affect us day by day. For example, the amount of burning fossil fuels significantly increase in order to fire up the engines of the millions vehicles. This translates that the severity of the pollution to the environment are gradually rising due to the amount of carbon dioxide being emitted to the atmosphere. Apart from this, noise pollution is also derived, though partially, from the increasing number of vehicles, and it tremendously degrades the quality of life people used to have before the advent of the development. This, however, is not an impossible-to-solve issue if proper measures have been in place by the government and individuals. First of all, heavy tax can be introduced by the government in order to deter commuters from tempting to use their private means of transport, due to its high cost. At the same time, it also encourages people to start using public transportation. Individual people can also contribute to solving this matter. Carpooling, for example, is an effective solution to traffic congestion, and should well be adopted by many, so that, instead of one car for one person, a group of four or five and share if their destination is identical. In conclusion, although increasing number of vehicles poses some serious issues to the society, it can still be easily resorted if everyone join hands and take some serious steps to solving it.

Building Railways or Roads

Governments should spend more money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Since time immemorial, people try to find the most effective way for transferring goods as well as for travelling. Some of them prefer to use railways, another find more advantages by car driving. Whilst, I believe that there are strong arguments on both sides, I would suggest that it is more beneficial for national authorities to invest in railways building. Nobody can deny that spending money on roads is more profitable for government. First, all materials, which are necessary for such building, are usually cheaper to purchase than, for example, to buy rails or trains. It also should be noticed that during next five or ten years authorities could spend less money on roads reconstruction or repair. Moreover, the speed of the roads building is the factor of utmost importance. Due to the spending less time for the road creation, government, for example, can efficiently deliver all necessity goods and help to the citizens who suffer from earthquake or storm. Turning to the other side of the argument, railways continue to show their potential in developed countries. Modern trains, which are used only electricity, have a positive impact on our environment. Japan is the best example of how rational using of railways helps government to develop all areas of the country. New trains could be used by more than thousands people per hour, which allow workers to drive to their factories and offices at any part of the country. Despite the fact that the newest train’s speed is about 600 km per hour, Japanese railways are safety and very convenient. To conclude, both railways and roads have advantages and disadvantages for counties. However, I strongly believe that if the governments have enough money they should invest in railways rather than in roads, because modern trains are more reliable and faster than cars or buses. In long term perspective national authorities will spend less on environment protection as well as on attracting labor in small cities.

Paying to Maintain Roads

As the number of cars increases, more money has to be spent on road systems. Some people think the government should pay for this. Others, however, think that drivers should cover the costs. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Some today have argued that the funding for road systems should be the responsibility of governments instead of individuals. In my opinion, although maintaining roads can be considered a public service, private motorists should pay in order to more generally benefit society. Proponents of governments assuming road costs argue this is a basic service tax-payers expect. In all countries, working adults must pay a certain percentage of their monthly salary to the government. From these contributions, individuals justly feel entitled to a variety of public services ranging from police and fire departments to affordable hospitals and safe infrastructure. Roads are a key component in this contract as most people drive in order to go to work, see friends, and take holidays. The government will itself benefit not only from fulfilling this mandate but also in terms of the financial byproduct of consumers being outside actively contributing to a market economy. However, forcing drivers to pay these costs will greatly discourage private automobile ownership. This disincentive is crucial today because cities are overcrowded and private vehicles contribute to rising pollution levels. In large cities such as New York City and Tokyo, it is nearly impossible to traverse the city by automobile at peak rush hours. If there were fewer cars on the road, then people could travel more freely on bicycles, on foot, and using public transportation. Additionally, private vehicles are inefficient. Other forms of travel leave relatively small carbon footprints but cars, often carrying only one or two passengers, use more petrol than would normally be required to transport people. Replace cars with more efficient transport options and there would be a marked decrease in the consumption of fossil fuels. In conclusion, despite the strong argument that tax-payers deserve public infrastructure such as roads, it is more important to discourage individuals from purchasing cars. In the long-term, this will greatly benefit cities and the world as a whole.

Some people think that governments should invest mainly in making public transportation faster while other think there are more important priorities (cost, the environment). Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

While many are of the opinion that the most important factor in public transport is speed, others value areas such as cost and the environment. In my opinion, although there are a number of key considerations, speed is by far the most important.

Two of the most commonly addressed areas of public transport are cost and the environment. in vietnam, the quality of the public transport buses is very low and they produce a lot of air pollution. however, they are very cheap and this allows the residents who need them the most, typically students and low-wage earners, to afford them. in an ideal world the government would have cheap buses that produce little exhaust, but cost and environmental concerns will always be in conflict. in developing countries, it makes sense to emphasise the expense of tickets while developed countries have the wealth and responsibility to try to better balance these competing policy influences., although these are worthwhile considerations, speed of transport should be the main rationale as it has a trickle down effect on the economy and quality of life of a country. for example, japan has a famously fast and efficient system of railways both inside cities and connecting provinces within the country. if someone has a family, faster transport allows them to spend more time with their family both before and after work. this can enhance the quality of life of working class people. it also means that they will get to work faster, get more work done during the day and have more time to recuperate for the next day. over years and decades this has hastened japan’s development into one of the world’s leading economies., in my opinion, cost and the environment are crucial for ordinary people and the future of our planet but speed has a greater effect on people in both the short and long-term. Essay on Public Transport: Whenever you walk or drive by a road you see various other vehicles running besides you, carrying numerous passengers at a time. These vehicles constitute the public transport of a city or any locality.

As the name itself, Public Transport is easily accessible to the general public. It includes vehicles like, autos, taxis, buses, trams, metro rails, trains etc. These public transport facilities are shared by everyone without any discrimination. It can carry numerous people from one point to the other, at a time.

Public transport existed from the old time. Public transport is usually managed by the government or by private organisations. In some countries public transport is managed by private organisations and at some places it is government-owned. In countries like India public transport is owned and managed by the government and charged minimally so that it is affordable to the common people.

Transportation has become a necessary part of life today. Living without any transportation is very difficult as the world has changed to a global village.

Today in the modern era with the advent of new technologies and newer vehicles are introduced with higher speeds which take less time to reach the destination. People are always in search of faster and easy means of travelling to their destination. They want a transportation medium consuming less time at low costs. To achieve this people own vehicles to travel on, but there is a large majority of people who can’t afford to buy their own vehicle, for such people, public transport proves to be a boon.

Encouraging people to use public transport is a good way to reduce pollution and other traffic problems. If better public transport facilities will be made available it will discourage use of individual vehicles. That will also help in saving time, energy, money and other resources.

Long Essay on Public Transport

From the olden days, transport was the necessity for human beings to travel from one place to another. Man has greatly evolved from simply walking followed by using animals as mode of transportation to the moment when vehicles were created.

But today in the modern era, people usually opt for private vehicles, which leads to more vehicles on the road that leads to heavy traffic jams and air pollution. These are the major problems especially in the cities. The only way to solve this problem is to encourage people to use public transportation instead of using private vehicles as it is the best and easiest way that people can opt for.

Public transportation has become a necessary part of today’s modernisation and growing technologies. Public transport is defined as a transport made available for common people. Public transport is the cheapest mode of transport which is affordable by the common people.One major benefit of using public transport is that it reduces the number of vehicles running on roads and gradually slows down pollution.

When use of public transport will increase , there will be fewer private vehicles on the road. Some means of public transport such as high-speed trains, metro trains, trams cause zero pollution because they run on electricity. Another advantage is that people can do anything while taking public transportation as you can finish an assignment, read a book or do any type of work.

Also using public transportation saves a lot of money. People do not have to buy their own vehicles. The fare for buses or taxis are cheaper than private vehicles when compared to the diesel prices. Also, people do not have to spend lots of money on the maintenance of their vehicles or have to worry about parking as well.

But every aspect has its down side too. Taking public transport can be an uncomfortable experience when it is overcrowded. Getting stuck in an overcrowded bus or train for hours is an unpleasant experience for anyone. Also public transport lacks hygiene. They are very annoying sometimes. Also when you are in a hurry to reach the destination, public transport cannot help you to achieve your goal as they have run on their fixed timings.

The modes of public transport play an important role in the development of the country’s economy too. The better means of transport, the faster the growth rate of the economy would be. Also there should be a proper network of means of public transport in villages, thereby increasing economic activity there, automatically.

Public transport is the easiest mode of transport. Public awareness must be increased to use public transport at a greater extent. It will in turn reduce the pollution, traffic jams and also lower the rates of accidents as public transport has to undergo many safety measures. And public transport is always cheaper than the private ones. To make use of public transport, governments and organisations must try to provide more and more facilities to the public.

• Public transport has fixed schedules which is inconvenient for some travellers.
• Public transport is crowded and personal space may not be available.
• Most vehicles are not modified to suit people with disabilities and also for senior citizens.

Getting College Essay Help: Important Do's and Don’ts

College Essays

If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

• Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
• Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
• Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
• Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

• Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
• Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
• Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
• Tell you what to say and how to say it
• Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
• Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

• An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
• An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
• An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

• If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
• If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
• If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

• Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
• Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
• Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

• Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
• How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
• Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
• Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

• Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
• Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
• Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
• Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
• What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

• You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
• A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
• A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
• A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
• All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
• Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
• If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
• Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

The Grand Trunk Road or the GT Road is one of the world’s oldest roads and the largest in Asia. Since the domestication of animals in the Mesolithic period, humans started to work on different types of transport mechanisms. Developments in transport systems have come a long way. Today, aeroplanes and jets are the fastest modes of transport. Humans have built jets. Some of the fastest planes and jets are the USAF X-15, SR-71 Blackbird, and MIG-25 Foxbat.

History of Transport

The earliest modes of transportation were walking and animal riding. The invention of the wheel by the Sumerian people in Mesopotamia changed the entire game. It allows the transportation of heavier loads with ease. Intercontinental roads like the Silk Route and the Grand Trunk Roads were constructed. 

Major changes in transportation occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries when railways were introduced. The invention of the Steam Engine by James Watt was a major turning point in the history of transportation. After this invention, railway lines were set up for the first time in 1825 from Stockton and Darlington in England. Today, after almost 200 years since the invention, steam trains have evolved into hypersonic bullet trains. 

Another invention in the field of transportation was of aeroplane. Aeroplanes were invented by the Wright brothers in 1903, when the first flight took off from North Carolina, USA. Aeroplanes are the fastest mode of transportation, allowing us to travel overseas within just a couple of hours.

Different Modes of Transport

The different modes of transportation are road, rail, sea and air. Roadways account for 87% of passenger traffic and 67% of freight traffic movement. On the other hand, railways are cheaper means of transportation for both humans and goods. 

Air and Sea transports are used to travel to distant places or different countries. Travelling by sea is environmentally friendly as other means of transport use fuels like petrol and diesel, which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

In recent years, governments have focused on building electric and sustainable modes of transportation, such as electric cars, bicycles, and public transit. This shift is driven by concerns about environmental sustainability and the impact of traditional transportation on climate change.

Willing to spend hours on end in a motion-capture suit? Tesla is paying up to $48 per hour for the role.

Over the past year, Tesla has hired dozens of workers to train its humanoid robot, Optimus, using motion-capture suits, according to data from LinkedIn.

Elon Musk first announced Tesla's plans to create a humanoid robot named Optimus in 2021. The Tesla CEO has said the robot will eventually be able to handle jobs ranging from working in a factory to serving as a caregiver.

In June, Tesla said it had deployed two of the Optimus robots at one of its factories. And it appears Tesla has been hiring employees to work alongside the robots as it is developed.

The role, which has the title "Data Collection Operator," requires workers to walk along test routes and perform designated tasks while wearing a motion-capture suit and a virtual reality headset for more than seven hours per day, according to the job description from Tesla's Careers page . In addition to collecting data, workers are also expected to analyze the information they've gathered, write daily reports on it, as well as work on some minor tasks related to their equipment and its software.

It also has very specific height requirements and calls for people between five foot, seven inches and five foot, eleven inches. Christian Hubicki, a roboticist out of Florida A&M University, said Tesla is likely looking for individuals who will not only fit into the specific suits, but will also have similar sizing to the robot, which Musk has said will clock in around five foot, eight inches.

Tesla is also looking for someone that will be comfortable wearing the motion-capture suit and VR headset for long stretches of time and will be able to withstand some of the disorientation and "VR sickness symptoms" that can come with using the gear for extended periods.

Tesla is hiring full-time workers for the role and is willing to pay between $25.25 to $48 per hour, according to the job listing. The role is available with multiple shifts, including from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 4 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., and 12:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Animesh Garg, a senior researcher at Nvidia Research and a robotics professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, said the job likely entails collecting data through simply performing tasks in the motion-capture suit that can be recorded and later analyzed by data annotators in order to train the AI system, as well as tele-operating the humanoid robot directly.

Tesla's Optimus social media account provided a peek into what the job entails last year.

The video clip shows an operator in a motion-capture suit, with haptic gloves and a VR headset picking up objects while a virtual version of the Tesla Optimus bot performs the same movements.

Earlier this year, Tesla appeared to go on a hiring spree for the role. More than 50 different people have worked in the role over different periods over the past year, according to a Business Insider review of LinkedIn data.

Tesla is likely looking to gather vast amounts of data, experts say.

"It's the exact same thing they're doing with Autopilot," Jonathan Aitken, a robotics expert out of the University of Sheffield, said. "But rather than collecting data from their fleet of cars, they're paying people to come into the factory or come into a workplace and undertake these tasks."

Garg, the Nvidia researcher and robotics professor, estimates that Tesla should be aiming to log anywhere from hundreds of thousands of hours to millions of hours of data in order to train Optimus how to work in Tesla's factories — a feat that could take a lot of time and money.

"It extremely difficult to produce robots at scale," Garg said, adding that Tesla's Optimus robots are likely custom built and assembled, as well as constantly undergoing new iterations.

"The amount of data collection you'd need would easily be half a billion dollars and the real question is 'Even if you do that, do you succeed?' Because there is no guarantee of success," he added.

The use of motion-capture suits and tele-operation in robot training is far from a new practice, but Tesla is among the first to attempt to use the practice at this scale and to perform such a wide variety of generalized tasks, according to Aitken.

"In the manufacturing world, we typically have a robot that can do one task really really well, but it doesn't usually extend beyond that," Aitken said.

A spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

US industries prepare for hit from Canadian rail strike

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, total trade flows between Canada and the U.S. via rail totaled $9.1 billion in June, roughly 14 percent of all trade between the two countries.

“North American manufacturing supply chains depend on functioning rail links. If rail traffic grinds to a halt, businesses and families across the country will feel the impact,” National Association of Manufacturers President and CEO Jay Timmons said in a statement. “The flow of materials and products across the U.S.-Canada border is already slowing as preparations are made for a potential work stoppage.”

Autos and auto parts were the top commodity transported via rail between the countries in June, totaling $4.1 billion in imports and exports, the bureau reported. Those familiar with the industry estimate U.S. auto plants have roughly three to four days worth of stock before they would have to halt production.

Supply chain experts are also concerned about halting shipments of chlorine and other chemicals used to treat drinking water from Canada to the U.S. Many U.S. wastewater facilities rely on regular shipments of those chemicals since they lack capacity to store them long-term. A source familiar with the supply chain dynamics estimated that cities relying on those imports could be under a boil advisory by Monday if the strike continues.

Agriculture organizations have warned that a stoppage would halt the flow of key agricultural products, like grain and feedstocks for poultry and cattle. The Canadian Federation of Agriculture wrote in a letter last week that the companies had already halted shipments of “hazardous items” including fertilizers ahead of potential work stoppage.

The trucking industry won’t likely be able to cover the void left by freight rail.

Bob Costello, chief economist for the American Trucking Associations, said in an interview that trucks work as a complement to rail rather than a replacement.

Although the trucking industry can pick up some extra capacity, some shipments are simply too big or heavy to be transported via truck, he said.

“The longer the strike goes on, the more negative it becomes for the trucking industry,” Costello said. “Especially if things that you can’t move via truck then don’t get to factories, the factories aren’t producing products that trucks then later haul — it’s a complicated story.”

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Sam Graves, R-Mo., released a statement Wednesday urging the Biden administration to “seek a resolution” to avoid supply chain impacts.

But there’s not much the administration can do aside from prod the Canadian government to resolve the matter, John Drake, vice president of transportation, infrastructure and supply chain policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said in an interview.

“I think the best thing we can expect the Biden administration to do right now is to communicate that a strike is not only going to impact Canada, but it’s going to impact thousands of businesses and consumers here in the United States,” he said.

Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.

Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.

Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.

Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.

He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.

He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.”
