How to write a resume presentation: tips and tricks from experts

Your resume is a ticket to a better job, and considering the current situation in the job market, standing out is more important than ever. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by incorporating a “Resume Presentation” section in your resume. Add a separate section titled “Resume Presentation” or something of the kind to your resume. It should come after your contact details and objective or summary statement, before your professional experience and educational background.

Step 2: List all the presentations done by you

List your presentations in chronological order under the “Resume Presentation” section. Make sure to include the following details:

• Title of the presentation
• Date created
• Location (if applicable)
• Use bullet points to add clarification.

Step 3: Highlight relevant skills

This section of your resume in PowerPoint should focus on your presentation abilities, including storytelling, public speaking, audience interaction, and data visualization.

Step 4: Emphasize key achievements

For each entry, provide a clear overview of your key achievements or the presentation’s impact. These can be anything from metrics to feedback to outcomes demonstrating your effectiveness as a presenter. Step 5: Quantify your achievements

Mention percentage improvements, the size of the audience, and any other measurable results. Numbers give your claims credibility.

Step 6: Incorporate action words

When discussing your presentation experience, use action verbs such as facilitated, engaged, articulated, and presented. This will help demonstrate your active involvement and overall effectiveness.

Step 7: Tailor your resume presentation to the job

Customize your resume for each job application. Highlight presentations that match the specific industry expertise or skills the potential employer wants to see in a perfect candidate.

Your headline should be precise and concise, which means avoiding non-essential, complicated words or confusing phrases that could lead readers to believe something completely different. Make hiring managers want to learn more by using an enticing tone in text and visuals.

Tip #2: Give preference to an easy-to-read layout

Make your PowerPoint presentation resume as simple as possible. This way, you’ll ensure hiring managers can find what they are looking for quickly, boosting your chances of success in the job application.

Tip #3: Make use of typography

Making a resume or CV is one of those tasks that we all have to do. But did you know you can actually create one in PowerPoint?

If that’s the tool you are most comfortable with, it is possible. PowerPoint can also be a good option for a resume or CV if you need something highly visual in a presentation style.

You can then export it from PowerPoint to any other format you need so that you can share it online or with potential employers.

Here’s how to do it, with a few templates to help you get started (all with a super professional look-and-feel).

Determine if You Need a Visual Resume

Before you go down the path of creating a resume in PowerPoint, you need to figure out if it is the right choice for you. PowerPoint can be a good option if:

• It’s the only tool you have or know how to use
• You need a highly visual resume format for a presentation (we’ll focus on this one)

If you are presenting for a job interview, want to make a strong creative impression, or just show off your work in a style that marries your resume and portfolio, this option could be right for you.

Pick a Format

Once you have determined that PowerPoint is the tool you want to use for your resume, it’s time to think about formats and aspect ratios. How do you want to present or share the resume? What shape and size should it be?

If you are planning a presentation style, you’ll probably stick to the standard horizontal format. If you plan to export for more of a traditional look and feel, you can change the canvas size to a vertical 8.5 by 11 format.

The latter is great if you are using PowerPoint because you are comfortable with the tool, but want to export and save the resume for standard distribution.

Look for a Template (Or Create Your Own)

The quickest way to jumpstart a resume design project is with a template. A good PowerPoint resume or CV template will include slides in a style that appeals to you with elements for all of the standard resume content.

When looking for a template, you need one that matches the type of content you have to work with. (Don’t pick out a template packed with full-screen images if you don’t have them, or cut out photos if that’s not in your portfolio.)

The template should also have a visual style that’s similar to your own. You want the PowerPoint resume or CV to look like it belongs to you. It should show exactly who you are and what you do.

The other option is to create your own template. If you have a great idea, go for it!

Gather Visual Elements

If you are creating a visual resume, images are key. Gather what you plan to use in the resume design to get a feel for where you should go with the content.

• What types of images do you have to work with?
• What are the shapes and styles?
• How many images do you plan to use?
• Do you have a visual element to go with each section of the resume?
• Do you need to collect more visuals to complete this task?
• Are they in a format that will work with PowerPoint?

Once you have all the visuals together you can place them in the template to set the framework for your design.

Fill in Relevant Info

Once you have the concept of the PowerPoint resume design mapped out, you can start filling in all of your relevant information and details. Note that most templates will include way more slides than you need. Delete unnecessary ones to make the job quicker and easier.

Order the slide deck in a reverse chronological format with the newest and most relevant information first. It’s the same idea as if you were typing it out on paper.

Don’t forget an introduction slide with your name and contact details. (You’ll probably also want to repeat this slide at the end.)

Follow that with a quick summary or professional profile so that whoever looks at the resume gets a feel for who you are.

Then fill in work experience, education, and relevant skills.

Design for Key Details

Every important part of your PowerPoint resume should follow the format of one idea per slide.

If you are creating a visual resume, consider slides that pair a visual with the corresponding information. It’s a fact for your resume with a piece of visual supporting evidence.

Resumes can get long quickly, so try to design for key pieces of content and details with this format. Consider your most recent and best activity to be one slide each, and then all other supporting elements on a single slide.

It might look like this:

• One slide for current job
• One slide for relevant experience
• One slides for all other jobs

Finish with Achievements or Awards

Finally, wrap up the content in your PowerPoint resume or CV with a section that outlines awards or achievements. This is a great way to leave a strong impression at the end of the slide deck.

Things to include are certifications, awards, publications or grants, and key work-related honors. Even if you only have a few to share, this can add a lot of impact.

Proof Carefully

Edit your resume, ask someone else to proof your resume, and then edit it again. You can’t proofread too many times when it comes to this type of document. You want it to be flawless.

Export to Share

The last step is to export your PowerPoint resume or CV into a format for sharing. If you are giving a presentation, there’s nothing more to do than save.

If you plan to distribute the PowerPoint resume, it’s a good idea to export to a format that you know will maintain the integrity of the document no matter who opens it. A PDF format is recommended.

A resume or CV that’s designed in PowerPoint can be a lot different than the typical paper format. It will probably have a different shape and size (that’s made for screen viewing) and a much more visual format.

For a designer, this is almost a combination between a resume and a portfolio. Use this format to highlight your work with that in mind.

How To Make a Resume in PowerPoint (with Resume Templates & Examples)

Resume templates in PowerPoint are very useful to quickly make a professional resume using one of the most popular presentation tools. The free resume templates can help in the job search process. There are different ways to make a visual resume in PowerPoint or Google Slides, you can orient your resume to make it look like a presentation or create a resume document, and use PowerPoint instead of Microsoft Word. What’s the difference? Actually there are different ways to present your resume in a visual way to a new job opening.

Here we will see how to quickly design a resume in PowerPoint taking advantage of free infographics and PowerPoint shapes.

Gather the Information, Create a Blank Presentation and Prepare the Resume Layout in PowerPoint using Portrait Mode

First, take at hand all the information you can gather about your background education, professional background, honors, awards and accomplishments. If you have a LinkedIn profile and it is updated with your experience and background information, you can take that as as a base or good starting point.

Then, go to PowerPoint and create a new blank presentation.

PowerPoint automatically starts up with a landscape layout, but you can easily change the layout to portrait if you want to use that format for the professional resume . Go to Design tab and then click

Here you can change the orientation to use portrait mode instead of the default landscape mode.

Then, you can change the default title layout in PowerPoint that is always present by default as the first slide, unless you want to add a title to your slides. To do it, go to Home tab and then click Layout button. Select the empty layout for instance, in order to start drawing the elements that will be included in your visual resume presentation.

Add the Resume Content & Use Slide Master for Header & Footer Content

As we see, a good resume can help in the job search process. We already created a base presentation in PowerPoint where our resume will be designed. Now, it is time to add your infographic resume content to the presentation. From the notes and information you gathered from your past experience, let’s try to organize it slide by slide. You can start adding your name and contact information on every page. Using the Headers & Footer sounds like a good idea however these options (especially the header) are available in the Handouts view only. However, as an alternative you can use the Slide Master to add all the information that you’d like to keep in every slide or page.

In this case, we have created a new layout in the Slide Master view for all the elements that will be shared across the resume template in PowerPoint . As you can see in the figure below, these include the name, the street address, the phone and email. Also, we have included  the blue bar that will be used for the slide title or resume page title (Work Experience, Education, Awards & Honors, etc.).

Then, you can start adding the resume content with your work experience and education background.

Now it is time to work creating the cover. The resume cover will be likely one of the most important slides or pages since it would be the first slide or page that the recruiter or future employer will see.

Job hunters wonder about how to improve their resume. Mary, a director at a large company, called for help with resume writing because she was losing her job. She said, “I’m sure my resume doesn’t represent me very well. I want it to be impressive, but I’m stumbling on how to create it. I hear people say they send out dozens of resumes with no response, which makes me very anxious. How must I differentiate myself to get an employer’s attention?”

For most people, resume writing is a daunting task. The stakes are high. Yet, you may be unaware of the current resume trends you need to consider. Here are the ten resume trends to understand to help you showcase your uniqueness and capabilities and stand out to an employer.

Self-Marketing. Self-analysis is essential to do before you start writing. Think of your resume as an advertisement trying to get an employer to buy the product, and that product is you. Outline what you are best at doing. Note your top strengths. What are relevant credentials and experience to emphasize? Identify your best accomplishments.

RESULTS. Employers hire you based on your previous achievements and the belief that you can repeat those if they hire you. Each work description must focus on sharing measurable results and outcomes. Be specific. Employers value concrete accomplishments. Emphasize if you made the company money, saved money, started something, made an innovation, or created a new tool, process, system, or program. Incorporate numbers and percentages into your bullet descriptions. Have your most impressive accomplishments and best experience near the top of the description.

Prioritize. Target what is most important to employers. Determine the key elements they seek and tailor your resume to their needs. To identify the key points to highlight, review several relevant job openings. Focus on the top three to five qualifications and duties they advertise for. Incorporate that information into your resume to demonstrate that you have what a potential employer values.

Highlight. Showcase your success. Under your work history, you should use bullet points to create each statement. The most effective way to develop these is to use the formula: Actions = Results, noting what you did and its impact. For example, “Developed and executed a new email fundraising campaign, and the results increased donations by 21%.” Or state the dollar amount if that is impressive.

Keywords. Research the job description, paying close attention to the required skills and qualifications, and align your relevant skills accordingly. Identify the more critical tasks, such as project management or process improvement, and sprinkle these sparingly throughout the resume, especially in the work descriptions and in the summary section. Include any relevant industry terms, too. Don’t try to “keyword stuff” throughout the resume, as the ATS may reject your resume, and a recruiter may disregard it, viewing it as being too generic or lacking.

Action verbs. Under your work descriptions, start each sentence with an action verb. Use words highlighting the skill or accomplishments, such as Led, Drove, Analyzed, Designed, Originated, Implemented, Established, etc. Avoid repetition, and don’t use that same action verb to start a statement within a particular work description. Write the sentence in the past tense, even for your current position.

ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems). ATS is a human resources software that works as an online database or a digital filing cabinet when you submit a job application. It’s not very sophisticated and requires search engine optimization. Avoid any creative resume style. Simple formatting is the key to getting through the system’s filters. Eliminate columns, tables, text boxes, headers, footers, graphics, color ink, or PDFs (unless specifically requested).

Qualifications. Employers hire someone with the skillset necessary to succeed in that advertised job. They want a person who is not underqualified or overqualified. Carefully evaluate the role before you hit “apply.” Assess your skills, education, and experience to ensure the job closely fits your background. Refrain from applying for a job if you don’t have 80% of the qualifications required.

Soft skills. These traits help show how you fit into the job role and match the company’s culture. Include appropriate ones to supplement your hard skills. The top soft skills employers value beyond excellent oral and written communication are collaboration, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, leadership, adaptability, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.

Competencies. Employers find no value when you list a lot of competencies, such as project management, team leadership, results-driven, etc., in one section since you aren’t demonstrating exactly where you used these abilities. Avoid creating this section. Instead, inserting these competencies into the work history and summary of qualifications is much more effective. That way, you illustrate how you have that skill and apply it on the job.

What is the Purpose of a Resume? A resume is a summary of your past employment history, education and accomplishments and skills. The purpose of a resume is to present aspects of yourself to a potential employer. A resume is a tool to market and sell yourself to an employer! It is the tool that when paired with an effective cover letter can help to get you an interview.

What can a Resume do? Help you clarify your value as an employee and prepare yourself for the job search process Offers a summary of your qualifications to a potential employer At an interview, it can be used as a reference for the interview to ask questions and for the interviewee (you) to answer questions.

Resumes should…. Be one to two pages long On clean, white paper Be error free – no grammatical or typing mistakes Neatly typed and formatted Be relevant – do not include irrelevant or outdated information Be accurate of your skills and qualifications and tailored to the job that you are applying for Do not use fancy graphics (unless applying for a graphics position)

Tips for Writing an Effective Resume Use verbs to describe your experiences and skills. For example: achieved, developed, trained, demonstrated. Spell out words in full, for example use Street not St. Avoid using “I,” if possible Include enough information to be clear and relevant without being to wordy. Address the needs of the employer and what they have asked for in the job ad. Ask yourself, does my resume match the job ad? Avoid using templates.

Types of Resumes Chronological Resume – lists education and experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first). Preferred if you have work experience. Skills Resume – highlights skills and accomplishments. Good to use if you have limited formal experiences.

How ChatGPT can help build your resume

You can use ChatGPT to generate ideas and bullet points for your role from scratch or to refine and optimize your current points that are not hitting the mark. Beyond key points, the AI tool can help you answer questions about putting together your resume. Here's how to get started.

Side note:  We are using ChatGPT, but you can use any AI chatbot -- there are plenty of capable AI chatbots to choose from .

1. Choose a resume template

ChatGPT will help you with the text in your resume, but you'll need to pick a template before you get started. The program you're using to write the resume -- such as Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or Canva -- will likely have a resume template already.

A quick Google search for resume templates will also bring up hundreds of editable templates you can import into your program of choice.

2. Sign in to ChatGPT (optional)

On April 1, 2024, OpenAI stopped requiring you to log in to ChatGPT. You can now access ChatGPT simply by visiting ChatGPT's website . However, if you want to take advantage of certain perks, such as being able to revisit the chat later, analyzing PDFs , or digitizing hand-written notes , you need to sign up to access those features.

Signing up is easy. Go to OpenAI's ChatGPT homepage and open an account by creating an OpenAI login or using your existing Google or Microsoft account. ChatGPT is free, so the sign-up process is simple, requiring no credit cards or obscure information.

If you want ChatGPT to generate text for your resume from scratch, all you have to do is ask. 

Whether you want it to generate your professional summary or an individual bullet, ask it directly. For example, I asked ChatGPT, "Can you write a short, professional resume summary about my role as a tech reporter?" Within seconds, it generated what you see in the screenshot below.

Although ChatGPT can create content ready to be copied and pasted into a resume, you should tweak the text so it is personalized to your experiences and doesn't look like a chatbot wrote it.

Employers want to learn about what makes you unique. Without your assistance, the chatbot can only access generic content about your role. You can also use the  Custom Instructions  feature to share some details about your role and interests that ChatGPT can reference when outputting the text to give it a little more nuance. 

4. Use ChatGPT to revamp your text

Whether you fill out the template yourself before using ChatGPT's assistance or have an existing resume you want to enhance, ChatGPT is a great resource for polishing up text. 

All you have to do is copy and paste your text and ask ChatGPT to make it better.

For example, I asked ChatGPT, "Can you make this resume bullet sound better: 'I write stories about technology.'" Within seconds, it outputted an elaborate bullet point that incorporated a professional tone and made that simple sentence more complex, as seen in the screenshot above.

Once you get your result, you can always tell ChatGPT to tweak it further with prompts like, "Make it shorter" or "Can you include [additional details]?"

• It follows the 8th Circuit blocking the SAVE student-loan repayment plan in its entirety.
• For now, millions of enrolled borrowers are on forbearance as the legal process continues.

President Joe Biden's administration is asking the nation's highest court to allow its new student-loan repayment plan to go through.

On August 9, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals officially blocked the SAVE income-driven repayment plan , intended to give borrowers lower monthly payments and a shorter timeline for debt relief.

It followed a legal rollercoaster for the 8 million borrowers enrolled in SAVE . Earlier this year, two separate groups of GOP state attorneys general filed lawsuits to block parts of SAVE , and a flurry of court decisions ultimately led the Education Department to place all enrolled borrowers on forbearance until the legal process is resolved.

Now, Biden's Justice Department is asking the Supreme Court to lift the 8th Circuit's block on the plan and allow the administration to move forward with SAVE's implementation.

"The Eighth Circuit's injunction has severely harmed millions of borrowers and the Department by blocking long-planned changes and creating widespread confusion and uncertainty," Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar said in the filing . "Indeed, as the Eighth Circuit acknowledged, the injunction has forced the Department to place the affected borrowers into temporary forbearance -- a result that is unambiguously worse for all involved."

Prelogar asked the Supreme Court to lift the 8th Circuit's block on SAVE and, if not, take on the case and expedite it in the fall.

This is in response to the lawsuit led by Missouri's attorney general, which said that allowing SAVE to go through would harm student-loan company MOHELA's revenue. Prelogar argued that the 8th Circuit's ruling was "overbroad" and, at the very least, should not apply to borrowers who are not serviced by MOHELA.

She also said that permanently blocking SAVE would cause harm to the Education Department and the millions of enrolled borrowers because the department would be required to recalculate monthly payments and retrain servicer staff.

"Many borrowers are now experiencing intense confusion from being told that their payments must be recalculated and from being placed in forbearance -- which will delay any eventual loan forgiveness, including under programs not challenged here, like the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program," Prelogar said.

She added that "borrowers would suffer additional harm if they are eventually sent higher bills and told that they can no longer count on the forgiveness that they were promised at the end of their repayment periods."

The Supreme Court asked the GOP states to respond to file a response by August 19.

Business Insider previously spoke to borrowers enrolled in SAVE who have experienced confusion and uncertainty as to the future of their student-loan payments. One 61-year-old borrower said she's a "nervous wreck" each time there's a new lawsuit update.

"I want to be able to just breathe, but retiring and having to pay for student loans when I'm not even working anymore and paying most of my Social Security to student loans, it's ridiculous," she said. "It's extremely stressful. I feel like they're getting ready to pull the rug out from under us again."

Scripts: Wait, who’s winning WNBA ROY?

I know the phrase gets overused.  They couldn’t write a better script! Ha ha!  But in this scenario, the WNBA really couldn’t have done better on a Hollywood set.

In a year of massive interest growth, two of the biggest factors — Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese — keep spinning intrigue, whether they meet each other on the court or not. Nothing embodied it more than their performances yesterday:

• Clark recorded 23 points, nine assists and five rebounds in Indiana ’s 92-75 win over Seattle ,  which  gave Clark the record  for most assists by a rookie in a single season. She already owns the record for most assists in a WNBA game by anyone, and is within striking distance of breaking the overall WNBA single-season assists mark in her rookie year (12 games left). Whew.
• Later in the evening, Reese put up 19 points and  20  rebounds in Chicago’s 86-68 loss to the Mercury.  She is the fastest player in WNBA history to record 20 double-doubles.  She needs two more to set the WNBA rookie record.

Two ROY trophies would be nice, but Sabreena Merchant and Ben Pickman expect Clark to win it, as explained in  their breakdown of the WNBA’s post-Olympics leg . And all those fans introduced to the league by Clark and Reese? They’re getting to see A’ja Wilson steamroll toward a third MVP trophy, as Sabreena and Ben also detail. Again, nice script.

News to Know

Flag football beef? Flag football will make its Olympic debut in 2028, and if commercials and public comments are to be believed, NFL players will be participating. U.S. flag football quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette  says the assumption is “disrespectful,”  however, and hopes that the flag football players who helped “grow the game” are given a chance to play. How about a mix? Flag football  is  significantly different. We have four years to figure it out.

Raiders name Minshew starter Gardner Minshew will begin the season as the Raiders’ starting quarterback, coach Antonio Pierce said yesterday, winning what was a close battle with Aidan O’Connell for the top job. Neither has played particularly well in the preseason, but Pierce believes the well-traveled 28-year-old’s experience — along with his “infectious” personality — gave him the upper hand.  See his full comments here .

Hammon denies Hamby accusations Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon once again denied former player Dearica Hamby’s workplace discrimination claim, saying simply: “It just didn’t happen.” Hamby, who now plays for the Los Angeles Sparks, filed a lawsuit last week alleging that Hammon and the Aces treated her unlawfully after Hamby announced her pregnancy. • The Vikings signed veteran DB Stephon Gilmore to a one-year deal.
• NHL trade: Edmonton picked up forward ​​ Vasily Podkolzin from Vancouver in exchange for a fourth-round pick.
• We missed this over the weekend: Dutch side Ajax and Greek side Panathinaikos combined for 34 penalty kicks in a shootout .

Refreshers: The complex layers of Michael Oher’s story

Michael Oher, a former NFL offensive lineman, a Super Bowl champion and the subject of the acclaimed (and since controversial) movie “The Blind Side,” spoke for the first time yesterday about a lawsuit he has filed against the family he lived with during his high school years.

Oher’s comments appeared in  a New York Times profile . And I think it’s worth a refresh on a saga that’s high-profile, complicated and upsetting. Layers here:

• If you saw “The Blind Side” or read Michael Lewis’ book with the same title, you know Oher’s story as this:  a young, talented Black teenager with nowhere to go — and a lot to learn — is adopted by a rich, white family in Tennessee and becomes a star football player. The film was nominated for Best Picture, and Sandra Bullock won best actress for portraying Leigh Anne Tuohy, Oher’s “adoptive” mother. Emphasis on quotation marks there.
• Oher tells a slightly different story these days.  He feels “duped” by the Tuohy family, he told the Times, and alleges in the suit that the Tuohys have exploited his name, image and likeness to enrich themselves by repeatedly saying they adopted Oher. Instead of adopting him, they’d actually enlisted him in  a conservatorship that was dissolved last year.
• Lewis’ depiction of Oher is at the heart of this.  In both the book and movie, Oher comes off as almost intellectually disabled, which appears to be far from the truth.  Oher says it hurt his draft stock. “The NFL people were wondering if I could read a playbook,” Oher says in the piece. Last year, Jim Trotter wrote  a great column on the entire saga  that’s worth a read again today.

The Tuohys claim Oher is trying to extort them in this suit. Oher, now 38, says he wants his fair share of money generated from the story about him. Everything in between is messy.

If the suit goes to trial, it won’t be until next year at the earliest.
