COVID-19 had gender differential impacts in India, with women employees and entrepreneurs being particularly hard hit. The combination of illness, unpaid care, lack of access to financing and domestic violence has left many women struggling at work. At the same time, women entrepreneurs increasingly adapted to a changing business environment, facing liquidity challenges as well as a need to shift to less familiar e-commerce platforms to sell their products and services. Measures to enable their access to finance and markets will be crucial for their economic recovery and for promoting an inclusive start-up environment. This chapter outlines three areas that can be transformative, offering promise for “building back better”. These include supporting innovative financial mechanisms to reduce barriers to access capital; creating avenues for women entrepreneurs to access new business opportunities and supporting ecosystem players including women entrepreneurs themselves to be more gender-inclusive in their business policies and practices.

Vc funding for indian startups up 42% to us$ 6.3 billion in january-july: globaldata.
- August 29, 2024
Indian startups secured US$ 6.3 billion through 672 venture capital (VC) deals from January to July 2024, marking a nearly 43% YoY increase in funding, according to GlobalData. This growth occurred despite a cautious global investment climate, which saw only a 1.2% increase in deal volume. In comparison, India recorded 664 VC deals with disclosed funding of US$ 4.4 billion in the same period in 2023. Mr. Aurojyoti Bose, lead analyst at GlobalData, noted that while VC investors remain cautious, ample capital is available for promising startups.
Significant VC deals this year include Zepto's US$ 665 million, Meesho's US$ 300 million, and PharmEasy's US$ 216 million. Despite a modest rise in deal volume, the increase in funding value is attributed to large-scale deals. India accounted for 7% of global VC deals and 4.3% of the disclosed funding value from January to July 2024. He highlighted that India, alongside China, is a major market for VC funding in the Asia-Pacific region and ranks among the top 5 globally in deal volume and value. Despite global economic uncertainties, India's robust pipeline of promising startups continues to attract substantial capital, underscoring its critical role in the global venture ecosystem.

India launches first reusable hybrid rocket, payloads to study climate change

- Rocket is carrying CUBE and Pico payload for climate research
India on Saturday successfully launched its first reusable hybrid rocket from a ground next to Marina beach on East Coast Road, near Chennai.
Tamil Nadu-based startup Space Zone India was behind the successful launch of Mission RHUMI-2024, onboard a mobile platform to take up research on global warming and climate change.
RHUMI-1, the hybrid reusable vehicle weighing 80 kg, was fuelled with nitrous oxide at the last minute and was ignited by 7.30pm. The rocket reached the 35 km altitude and, as per the crew, released the three CUBE payload and 50 pico-payload into the suborbital region.
Anand Megalingam, CEO of Space Zone India, who had named the rocket after his son, Rhumithran, said that the rocket was a joint venture between his company and Martin Group of Industries, with 1500 school students also contributing to the process.
“Students worked with satellite technology. They made pico-satellites and CUBE payload. Almost all parameters were accomplished in the mission. The payload data in different attitude has also been collected”, said Megalingam, who has already begun working on Rhumi-2 and is planning to achieve 250 km altitude with a 250 kg payload.
Considering the increase in rocket and payload mass, he added that it can be launched from ISRO’s upcoming spaceport in Kulasekarapattinam.
Jose Charles Martin, the Managing Director of Martin Group of Companies, also confirmed that the mission was a success.
