Brisbane , port, capital of Queensland , Australia , and the country’s third largest city. It lies astride the Brisbane River on the southern slopes of the Taylor Range, 12 miles (19 km) above the river’s mouth at Moreton Bay .

The site, first explored in 1823 by John Oxley , was occupied in 1824 by a penal colony , which had moved from Redcliffe (22 miles [35 km] northeast). The early name, Edenglassie, was changed to honour Thomas Makdougall Brisbane , governor of New South Wales (1821–25), when the convict settlement was declared a town in 1834. Officially, freemen could not settle within 50 miles (80 km) of the colony until its penal function was abandoned in 1839, but this ban proved ineffective. A short-lived rivalry for eminence with the town of Cleveland was ended when the latter’s wharves burned in 1854, allowing Brisbane to become the leading port. Proclaimed a municipality in 1859, it became the capital of newly independent Queensland that same year. Gazetted a city in 1902, it was joined during the 1920s with South Brisbane to form the City of Greater Brisbane. Its municipal government , headed by a lord mayor, holds very broad powers. The Brisbane statistical division, including the cities of Ipswich and Redcliffe, has close economic and social ties to the city.

Brisbane is the hub of many rail lines and highways, which bring produce from a vast agricultural hinterland stretching west to the Eastern Highlands , the Darling Downs , and beyond. The city’s port, which can accommodate ships of 34,000 tons, exports wool, grains, dairy products, meat, sugar, preserved foods, and mineral sands. The metropolitan area , also industrialized, with more than half of the state’s manufacturing capacity, has heavy and light engineering works, food-processing plants, shipyards, oil refineries, sawmills, and factories producing rubber goods, automobiles, cement, and fertilizer. Oil is piped from wells at Moonie (west) and at Roma (northwest), which also supplies natural gas . Water is supplied from Lake Manchester, the Mount Crosby Weir, and the Somerset Dam. The city, the halves of which are connected by several bridges and ferries, is the site of the University of Queensland at St. Lucia (1909), Griffith University (1971), Parliament House (1869), the state museum (1855) and art gallery (1895), Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, and many parks and gardens. In January 2011, after a prolonged period of heavy rain, the Brisbane River overflowed its banks and caused the city’s worst flood since 1974 . Pop. (2001) local government area, 873,780; Brisbane Statistical Division, 1,627,535; (2006) local government area, 956,129; Brisbane Statistical Division, 1,763,131.

Queensland Trade and Investment Strategy 2022–2032

Harnessing the collective efforts of government, business and industry, the Queensland Trade and Investment Strategy 2022-2032 will evolve our established economic strengths and grow new industries.

Exports already support one in five Queensland jobs. The implementation of this $150 million Strategy will help to create additional jobs and deliver greater economic benefits for Queensland.

The Strategy will harness Queensland’s prime location at the crossroads of the Asia-Pacific and assist the state's businesses to evolve to meet changing worldwide demand.

The trade landscape is dynamic and global shifts and trends are reshaping international market demand for our products and services. Queensland needs to continue expanding our expertise and knowledge to meet new demand in the global economy.

The Strategy was developed in collaboration with Trade Steering Group (TSG) member agencies and through extensive consultation and inputs from clients, government and industry leaders.

With Brisbane’s Olympic flame burning bright in 2032, the Strategy will help facilitate Games trade and investment opportunities for the benefit of all Queenslanders.

This Strategy will ensure Trade and Investment Queensland is strongly positioned to continue its vital work supporting Queensland businesses to export and attract investment now and into the future.

Positioning Queensland for continued prosperity

Queensland’s trade and investment success is built on the skills of our people and value of our natural assets. The 2022–2032 Strategy aims to maximise existing strengths and develop new capabilities to help Queensland businesses to adapt, thrive and grow by:

  • Promoting Queensland
  • Boosting exports
  • Growing investment and jobs
  • Being a trusted partner

Priority industries

queensland presentation

Market directions

Queensland’s international network connects exporters with opportunities in both established and growth markets. While ongoing challenges from geopolitical tensions will influence future trade activity, Queensland has a strong foundation which will allow our priority industries to strengthen to grow exports.

Queensland has 14 priority markets reflected in our international network and export priorities across both established and growing industries: China, Europe, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Latin America, Middle East, New Zealand and the Pacific, North America, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

Queensland’s focus in building sustainable exports over the long-term will be informed by:

  • Strengthening engagement with major trading partners in Asia – ongoing connection with China, our largest trading partner, and continued collaboration with long-standing partners Japan and Korea, to meet new demand including food and energy security solutions.
  • Fostering new partnerships with growing Asian markets – exploring further opportunities in India as well as Southeast Asia to meet demand from the rise of the middle class and increasing urbanisation.
  • Building deeper ties with traditional partners and leveraging FTAs – pursuing exports in growth areas of strategic interest with Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States in sectors including advanced manufacturing, biotechnology and energy and leveraging new trade opportunities created through FTAs.
  • Expanding relationships in markets to harness Queensland expertise – building on strong relationships to support increased trade outcomes in markets such as Latin America and the Middle East to meet new demand from digital and economic transformation.

  • Study skills and learning advice overview

Follow this step-by-step guide to help you to write, design and deliver presentations.

This is a general guide. The specific requirements for your course may be different. Make sure you read through any assignment requirements carefully and ask your lecturer or tutor if you're unsure how to meet them.

  • Writing your presentation
  • Designing presentation slides
  • Delivering your presentation

1. Writing your presentation

Before you begin writing, make sure you understand the purpose of your presentation and have researched your topic . Once you've done this, begin to think about your audience and how you'll structure your presentation.

To ensure your presentation is engaging, think about who you'll be presenting to. Ask yourself:

  • Who is my audience?
  • What do they already know?
  • Why are they attending my presentation?

Make sure you pitch your presentation at the appropriate level. If your audience knows your topic well, they may get bored if you try to simplify the presentation too much. If your audience has no previous knowledge of your topic, they will find the presentation hard to follow if it's too complex.

Was your audience invited and will they be eager to hear what you are presenting, or is it a compulsory tutorial for them? This will affect the way you approach the presentation – in some cases you will have to work harder to motivate your audience to get involved and convince them to listen to you.

Structuring your presentation

To ensure your audience understands your message, your presentation needs to flow logically. To help you achieve this, your presentation should follow a set structure.

Most presentations use the following structure:

Introduction

A good introduction will capture your audience’s attention and give your presentation focus.

When writing your introduction, make sure you include:

  • a strong statement to capture the audience's attention – this may include a rhetorical question or an interesting statistic
  • an outline of your topic, what you'll be covering and the purpose of the presentation.

The body is where you describe and link each of your main points to meet the purpose of your presentation.

When writing the body of your presentation, make sure that your main points are:

  • supported by evidence, examples or statistics
  • directly related to the purpose of your presentation
  • presented in a logical sequence with links between relevant points.

By the time you reach the conclusion, you should have covered all your main points – don't introduce any new information at this stage.

Use your conclusion to:

  • reinforce your main points
  • link the points back to the purpose of your presentation.

Once you have finished writing your presentation, remember to read over it and check that information flows logically and is linked effectively.

Presenting research results

If you're presenting research results, your presentation should focus on:

  • what you did to reach the results
  • what information you discovered
  • why the results are important.

Avoid spending too long discussing your research methods – the results and their impact are more important.

When presenting research results, use the following presentation structure as a guide:

  • Context and why the research is important
  • Objective and methods
  • General study skills
  • Assignment writing
  • Jumpstart uni preparation program
  • Statistics support
  • Time management and procrastination
  • Academic English support
  • Skills for study: STEMM
  • First Steps in Research
  • Skills for study: Writing

  • Presentations
  • Planning your assignment
  • Literature reviews

Oral presentations require a wide range of skills including delivery, the ability to research and organise ideas into logical arguments, the ability to develop handouts and aids and the ability to field questions from the audience.

You may also be required to write an accompanying paper.

In the university context, oral presentations can take various forms. These include:

  • giving a public talk in the form of a lecture or seminar presentation
  • delivering a presentation on the outcomes of a class exercise or on an assigned reading
  • actively participating in a tutorial, discussion group or residential school

The key areas you should focus on when you are required to deliver an oral presentation are the preparation and delivery.

Preparation is key to a successful presentation and it is important to consider the task, your audience and the structure of your talk.

Begin by analysing the task you have been given and working out exactly what your presentation needs to cover. If you have questions about the task and what is expected of you, always ask your lecturer.

Your audience can determine a number of things within your presentation.

Firstly, it’s important to consider what they already know. If you’re speaking to an audience who is familiar with your topic, there is no need to explain every detail. At the same time, if your audience is not familiar with the topic avoid using specialised vocabulary which they won’t understand.

Secondly consider why they are there – do you need to convince them of something, are you giving a tutorial or are you presenting a new idea?

Thirdly, consider what kinds of questions they may ask about your presentation so that you can be prepared.

The required structure of your presentation may be provided by your lecturer in your course documents. If not, below is a generic structure for presentations.

Introduction

Use your introduction to outline what your presentation will be about and also to get the audience’s interest.

All of your body paragraphs should relate to your topic and the purpose of your presentation. Just like in an essay, you should include a topic sentence at the start of your body paragraphs as well as a linking sentence at the end. Support your points with evidence and examples and avoid making generalisations.

To make your presentation easy to follow, keep each paragraph limited to one main point and make sure they are in a logical order.

Your conclusion should highlight the main points you have made during your presentation and reinforce the purpose of your presentation. Never include new information in your conclusion.

In your delivery you will need to consider tone, pace, slides/media, eye contact, how you will answer questions and your own movement.

Your tone of voice should suit the topic of your presentation in order to effectively communicate your message to the audience. The way we speak lets the audience know how they should feel about something.

The pace of your presentation should not be too fast or too slow. Use pause effectively throughout your speech and to emphasise points. Silent pauses are also a great addition to your presentation if used correctly.

Slides/media

While slides and media can be a great addition to your presentation they should not be the focus and should never contain whole sections of your speech. Slides can be a great way of sharing data but always make sure that the audience can clearly see any graphs, tables etc. from where they are sitting. See these 10 tips from TED for extra inspiration.

If you are using media, make sure the room is set-up for any audio you may have.

Eye contact

Eye contact helps you to connect with your audience and makes you look more confident and credible as a speaker. In order to make effective eye contact you should allow yourself adequate rehearsal time so that you can speak freely during your presentation.

Answering questions

If your presentation requires or allows questions from the audience at the end, it is essential that you really understand your topic.

To give yourself a little more time to think about your answer, always repeat the question to the audience. This makes sure that everyone has heard the question and it also gives you more time to think before responding.

Feeling nervous during a presentation often means we may unknowingly start to fidget or sway. This can really distract your audience from your presentation. Have someone watch you present and let you know if you need to be aware of any movement.

You may be required to submit oral presentations. When approaching this task, as much as possible attempt to:

  • simulate a face-to-face presentation
  • take every step possible to maximise the reproduction quality of the presentation
  • keep within the time limits specified
  • listen to/watch the recording before you submit it to check for sound and video quality
  • keep a copy of the recording prior to submission.

Congregations

  • Wagga Wagga
  • Western Australia

On 13 February 1900, the Queensland Presentation Congregation was founded in Longreach, a pastoral town in Central Outback Queensland. The Catholic parish had been formed in 1893. The Catholic population saw the need to establish a Catholic school for their children. At the request of Bishop Higgins, the newly appointed Bishop of the diocese of Rockhampton, Presentation Sisters from Wagga Wagga, who were known for their expertise in education, were invited to staff a parish school.

Five Sisters, Agatha Collins, Frances Hayes, Alphonsus Burke, Patrick Madden and Ursula Kennedy, made the long journey from Wagga Wagga.  In response to the needs of this western town and its surrounding properties they provided primary school classes. As there was no secondary education provided by State education, the Sisters offered secondary school classes for older students and adults. Boarding facilities were available for girls who lived at considerable distances from this western town. As well as academic subjects, the teaching of music – piano, violin and singing, and art and penmanship, dressmaking and cooking were offered to students and townspeople alike.

The Sisters’ presence and their contributions to the development of the town over many years have been highly valued, leading to their inclusion in the historic Longreach Hall of Fame.

This tradition of quality and broad education continued throughout the schools which were established across the State as more women joined the Congregation.

With the advent of Vatican II when Religious were asked to go back to the spirit of their Foundress, the Congregation was involved in an in-depth evaluation of their lifestyle and ministries.  Some Sisters continued in education, others contributed to pastoral ministry in parish communities while others engaged directly in social justice areas which supported women, families in need, refugees and migrants.  This brought with it a change from the traditional community lifestyles to enable Sisters to be more available to respond to the needs of the times.

As time went on and as there was need for some Sisters to withdraw from areas of active ministry, partnerships were established with like-minded organisations which has enabled the Congregation to link with works that resonate with our Presentation charism.

Like many religious congregations, the Presentation Sisters are engaged in a process to ensure that their spiritual patrimony and financial legacy are secure, enabling future generations to receive the gift entrusted to them through the charism of Nano Nagle.
