A website is your brand’s gateway to digital success.

A strong brand presence isn’t just about visibility — it’s about making a lasting impact and resonating with your audiences. By merging design with functionality, a well-designed website can transform casual visitors into loyal customers, driving growth and solidifying your market position.

Importance of a website for online presence

The shift online has changed how businesses interact, operate, and grow. In this digital-first landscape, a website is a unique online space, extending your reach beyond local borders and a local audience.

Beyond visibility and connecting your brand to potential customers, partners, and investors, your website also acts as a strategic platform. A well-designed website harmonizes seamlessly with marketing efforts, leveraging search engine optimization (SEO), content-first marketing, and social media integration to bolster brand awareness and engagement.

In an increasingly connected world where over half of consumers turn to the internet for solutions, reviews, and purchases, your website propels your brand to the forefront, driving growth and visibility.

10 reasons why your business needs a website

If you’re still wondering, “Do I need a website?” here are ten more benefits of a website that’ll help you answer that question:

1. Showcases credibility and professionalism

A meticulously designed and well-curated website doesn’t just represent your brand — it elevates it. Greeting online visitors with intuitive user experiences, polished designs, and responsive performance signals that every facet of your business matters. This attention to detail conveys professionalism, making visitors more likely to engage with and invest in your offerings.

Modern websites do more than appeal visually, they also cultivate trust. Since consumers often vet brands online before making a purchase, a top-notch website proves you prioritize every touchpoint in the customer journey. It instills confidence in users, demonstrating that you value your brand and the audience interacting with it.

2. Increases brand awareness

Your website directly reflects your brand, showing visitors who you are and what your business represents. Every web design detail, from typography to content style, contributes to your brand’s identity and personality. Such meticulous branding differentiates your business from competitors and extends its reach beyond local boundaries. By cultivating a distinct and memorable identity, you ensure your brand messaging breaks down geographical barriers, resonating far and wide.

3. Provides 24/7 accessibility and convenience

Unlike a brick-and-mortar store with set operating hours, your website operates around the clock, offering products, services, and vital information without constraints. This constant availability provides unmatched convenience to potential customers and reinforces your brand’s dedication to meeting their needs. Build trust and foster a seamless user experience by ensuring visitors can consistently access content, shop, and find solutions on your site whenever they need to.

4. Enhances customer engagement

Interactive website features do more than display content — they actively engage visitors, converting passive browsers into leads and, eventually, loyal customers. Sharing industry expertise through blog posts, showcasing your authority via portfolios, and collecting user input through feedback forms all contribute to increasing engagement .

When you encourage active visitor participation — whether through making a purchase, leaving feedback, or engaging in community forums — you cultivate more robust connections with them. Customers who feel a sense of belonging and value within your community are more likely to return for future purchases and become enthusiastic brand advocates, driving immediate sales and sustained growth.

5. Enables data collection and analysis

Every visitor interaction, from clicks to conversions, provides website statistics that help you better understand your audience’s preferences, pain points, and challenges. With integrated tools like Google Analytics, you gain insights into user behavior, trace traffic sources , identify popular content, and map out navigation paths. By continually monitoring and interpreting this data, you can make informed decisions to refine your offerings and website marketing strategies. Tailoring your approach based on these insights lets your business pivot and remain responsive to customer needs, enhancing engagement and bolstering retention.

6. Amplifies search visibility through SEO

Following website SEO best practices enhances your brand’s discoverability. By crafting quality content that offers genuine value, incorporating keywords your target audience is likely to use, and refining your site’s mobile performance, you optimize for search engines.

When potential customers look for queries related to your industry or offerings, an optimized website signals to search engines that it’s a relevant and authoritative source. This signal boosts your site’s chances of achieving top rankings, making it more visible to potential customers. This prime positioning offers a dual advantage — it increases the likelihood of clicks, directing more targeted, organic traffic to your website, while reinforcing your brand’s credibility and authority in the eyes of those users.

Since most users rarely venture beyond the first page of search results, an optimized site ensures you remain visible, accessible, and at the forefront of potential customer interactions.

7. Harnesses digital marketing avenues

Harnessing the full potential of digital marketing is pivotal for boosting your website’s bottom line . Your website anchors all your online endeavors. Every content piece you publish, email you send, and ad you run directs users back to this core hub. Through this centralized approach, your website offers a cohesive brand narrative, regardless of where visitors first encounter your business online. In the broader scope of digital marketing, this approach maximizes your influence and draws clear paths to conversion, weaving a cohesive, brand-enhancing story that increases profitability.

8. Evolves with audience preferences

Your website’s structure , from its content and design to its navigation, offers flexibility to adjust as trends and priorities shift, helping it remain relevant and user-centric. To promote a new product, consider crafting a dedicated landing page . If you aim to enhance user engagement, adjust website usability using direct feedback and collected metrics. Continuous updates and improvements also signal your brand’s dedication to delivering excellence and valuing customer feedback.

9. Establishes a competitive edge

A polished website is a crucial differentiator, particularly when marketing a small business in a saturated market. It anchors your brand’s digital identity and reflects its dedication, foresight, and ambition. When customers assess options online, a compelling website can tilt the scales in your favor, enabling you to stand out, even among industry giants.

10. Centralizes control over content

Owning a website offers total command over your content. Unlike the confines of social media — where character counts, shifting algorithms, and content boundaries can hinder your message — a website provides significantly greater flexibility.

On your site, you dictate everything, from the depth of your content and choice of imagery to the navigation paths visitors take. This control lets you meticulously tailor each site element for optimal impact. For example, strategic navigation paths can guide visitors smoothly, directing them to essential information or actions without overwhelming or confusing them, letting you present your brand’s story in its purest, most genuine form. Mastering this autonomy also ensures your website serves its purpose effectively, from informing visitors to converting leads.

1. Attracts Organic Traffic

The first reason a website is important is that it attracts organic traffic. Organic traffic refers to visitors who land on your website as a result of unpaid search results. This comes from people searching for information, products, or services that your website offers. Organic traffic is important because it targets users actively looking for what you provide, which makes them more likely to convert into customers or clients.

Businesses must optimize their website for search engines to increase organic traffic. This is a process known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO involves various strategies and practices aimed at improving your website’s visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). These include keyword research to understand what your target audience is searching for, optimizing website content and meta tags, and building quality backlinks from other reputable websites. Enhancing your SEO results in a higher rank for relevant keywords, which makes it more likely for potential customers to find you.

2. Increases Brand Awareness

The second reason is that a website increases brand awareness. Brand awareness is the extent to which consumers are familiar with the qualities or image of a particular brand of goods or services.

Having a website allows businesses to consistently present their brand image through design, content, and messaging. This helps in building a recognizable and trustworthy brand. It acts as an always-available resource for potential and existing customers to learn about your brand, explore your products or services, and engage with your content. This constant availability reinforces your brand’s image and ensures that your audience easily recalls your business when they are ready to make a purchase.

A well-designed website with compelling content gets shared across social media and other online platforms. This further increases the reach of your brand and introduces it to new audiences.

3. Establishes Branding

The third reason is that a website establishes branding. Branding is the process of creating a unique identity and image for a product or service in the consumer’s mind. This is done primarily through consistent thematic elements, including logos, colors, fonts, and messaging. It’s a strategic approach to defining how you want your business to be perceived by the market. It also involves communicating your core values, mission, and uniqueness effectively. A website plays an important role in branding as it serves as the digital front where these elements come together to tell your brand’s story.

A website also enables you to set your business apart from competitors by showcasing the unique aspects of your brand. You are able to highlight what makes your business special, whether it’s your innovative products, exceptional customer service, or commitment to sustainability. This differentiation is crucial in crowded markets, where consumers have numerous options to choose from. A well-branded website communicates why a customer should choose your business over others, and provides a compelling reason to engage with your brand.

4. Boosts Business Credibility

The fourth reason a website is important is that it boosts business credibility. Business credibility refers to the trustworthiness and reliability perceived by customers and the market regarding a business’ operations, products, or services. It encompasses the legitimacy of the business and its ability to fulfill promises, deliver quality products or services, and maintain ethical standards.

A website significantly boosts business credibility by providing a professional platform to present your business. It acts as evidence of your business’ legitimacy, and shows that you are a serious entity invested in offering value to customers. A well-designed website with clear, accurate information about your products or services, customer testimonials, and contact information lends credibility and shows that your business is established and trustworthy.

Websites also allow businesses to publish case studies, awards, certifications, and endorsements, all of which reinforce the business’ credibility. Providing detailed information about your business’ history, mission, and values also helps build trust with your audience. It’s common for consumers to research businesses online before making purchasing decisions, so a business without a website or with a poorly maintained one raises doubts about its credibility and seriousness. This potentially drives customers to other competitors.

5. Enhances Customer Experience

The fifth reason is that a website enhances the customer experience. Great customer experience is all about creating positive interactions between the customer and the business throughout the customer’s journey. Having a website allows prospects and customers to find comprehensive information about products and services, seek help, and get in touch with customer support.

Websites also allow businesses to offer detailed product descriptions, FAQs, how-to guides, and tutorials. This makes it easier for customers to understand what they are purchasing and how to use it. This availability of information enables customers to make informed decisions and reduces the likelihood of dissatisfaction.

A good website offers various channels for customer support, such as live chat, contact forms, and direct email addresses. Integrating these support options ensures that customers are able to easily reach out with their queries or issues. This leads to quicker resolutions and a more satisfying experience.

6. Facilitates Updates and Announcements

The sixth reason to create a website is that it facilitates updates and announcements. A website serves as a dynamic platform where businesses post the latest news, product launches, upcoming events, and any changes in services or policies. This direct line of communication ensures that your audience stays informed and engaged with your brand. Regularly updating your website keeps your customers in the loop and reinforces their interest and loyalty. This capability is especially important in today’s fast-paced market, where staying current has a significant impact on customer satisfaction and business success.

7. Complements Digital Marketing

The seventh reason is that a website complements digital marketing. Digital marketing refers to the use of digital channels, platforms, and technologies to promote a brand, product, or service to a targeted audience. It encompasses a wide range of activities, including search engine marketing, content marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, and online advertising. Digital marketing strategies are designed to reach customers through the digital devices they use daily and engage them in a more personalized and interactive way.

A website serves as the primary landing point for various digital marketing campaigns. The goal is mainly to drive traffic to your website, whether it’s through search engine ads, display ads, or social media ads. Visitors are then able to learn more about your business, explore your products or services, and take action, such as making a purchase or signing up for a newsletter.

8. Display Your Portfolio

The eighth reason is that a website allows you to display your portfolio. A portfolio is a curated collection of work examples, case studies, or achievements that demonstrate a business’ skills, expertise, and successes. It serves as a tangible representation of what the business has accomplished and what it is capable of delivering to potential clients or customers.

Having a website allows businesses to present their best work in a structured and visually appealing way. It also becomes accessible to anyone with an internet connection. This online presence broadens the reach of their portfolio and enables businesses to update and add to it easily as they complete new projects and achieve new milestones.

An online portfolio is a decisive factor for potential clients or customers when choosing between competitors and you. It provides proof of your business’ capabilities and professionalism, and makes it easier for prospects to make an informed decision based on the quality and relevance of your past work. A well-maintained portfolio on your website has the potential to attract new clients, generate leads, and establish your business as a leader in its field.

9. Generates Leads and Sales

The ninth reason a website is important is that it generates leads and sales, especially if your website is equipped with a contact form or eCommerce functionality. A website acts as a digital storefront or office where potential customers explore products or services, make inquiries, and complete purchases directly online. Contact forms enable visitors to leave their information, ask questions, or express interest in what the business offers. eCommerce functionality allows direct sales of products or services through the website, and facilitates instant business transactions.

Integrating these features into a website provides convenience for customers and significantly enhances the business’ ability to capture and convert interest into tangible outcomes. It enables the automation of the sales process from lead generation to the final sale, which makes operations more efficient and scalable.

10. Streamlines Hiring

The tenth reason for a website is that it streamlines hiring. A website serves as a platform where job seekers are able to verify the legitimacy of a business and apply for available positions. It offers an authoritative source of information about the company, its culture, values, and mission, which helps potential applicants to assess if they align with the organization. This transparency fosters trust and attracts candidates who are a good fit for the company’s ethos and objectives.

A website also provides an appropriate and efficient venue for job applications. Businesses are able to post job openings, describe role requirements, and outline the application process directly on their site. Candidates are also able to submit their applications through an integrated system, which makes it easier for employers to collect, organize, and review applications. This digital approach to hiring simplifies the recruitment process and speeds up candidate screening and selection. It ultimately enables businesses to find and hire the right talent more effectively.

Is a Website More Important Than Social Media for Business?

Yes, having a website is more important than social media for business for 3 reasons.

Firstly, a website offers full content ownership, which is a significant advantage over social media. On social media platforms, the content and data essentially belong to the platform. This means it’s possible that businesses lose access to their content and audience overnight (or permanently) if their social media accounts are suspended or the platform changes its policies. Websites enable businesses to retain complete control over their content, which ensures that it remains accessible and secure regardless of external platform changes.

Secondly, a website provides more flexibility in terms of branding. Social media platforms limit customization options, and tie businesses to the platform’s design and layout constraints. A website is able to be fully customized to reflect a business’ brand identity, from the visual design to the user experience. This freedom allows you to make a more cohesive and impactful branding strategy that differentiates your business in the market.

Thirdly, websites offer more control over monetization methods. Social media facilitates some forms of monetization, such as sponsored content and affiliate links, but they often come with restrictions and fees. A website allows businesses to implement a variety of monetization strategies, including eCommerce, subscription services, and advertising, without the limitations imposed by social media platforms.

Websites are more critical for the foundational aspects of business identity, content ownership, and revenue generation, but we still recommend maintaining an active presence on social media. Social media accounts are valuable for engagement, reaching new audiences, and driving traffic to the website. A well-designed website combined with a strategic social media presence creates a comprehensive online marketing approach, and maximizes visibility and growth opportunities for the business.

How Do I Create a Website for My Business?

To create a website for your business, start by identifying its purpose. Pick a web host or website builder, and register a domain name. Design your website with a suitable logo, layout, color schemes, and font. Set up important pages like Home, About Us, Services, and Contact. Publish content tailored to your audience, and ensure clear navigation. Test and review your website before launching. Check our comprehensive guide on how to create a website for detailed steps.

How Much Does Creating a Website Cost?

Creating a website costs between $100 and $6,000, depending on the method and services purchased. Key expenses include domain names, which cost between $0.70 and $14. Hosting services range from $20 to $6,750 per year, with basic shared hosting being the cheapest and dedicated, cloud, and managed hosting options being more expensive. Paid components like themes, apps, and plugins cost between $49 and $1,000 per year. Web developers charge between $100 and $4,500, varying by the complexity and customization of the website.

Check our full guide for more details on how much a website costs .

What Web Pages Should a Business Website Have?

A business website should have 4 essential pages: a Homepage, About Page, Contact Page, and Privacy Policy Page. The other specific pages needed (e.g. blog page, portfolio page, FAQ page) depend on the type of website you’re building. See our full guide on website pages for more details.

How Does a Blog Benefit a Business Website?

A blog benefits a business website in 2 ways.

Firstly, a blog increases the surface area for organic traffic to your website. Each blog post represents a new page that search engines are able to index. This improves your site’s visibility in search results. The more blog posts you publish, the more opportunities you create for potential customers to find your website through search engines. Targeting specific keywords related to your products or services also attracts visitors who are looking for information and solutions that your business provides.

Secondly, regularly publishing relevant and high-quality blog posts establishes your business as an authority in your field. You build trust and demonstrate expertise by sharing insights, tips, and information. This helps attract and retain customers who prefer businesses seen as knowledgeable and reliable. Addressing common industry questions and concerns further enhances your credibility.

Conclusion: Every Business Needs A Website

In conclusion, every business needs a website. They serve as a key platform for their online presence and open up new opportunities to attract new customers and markets and expand sales. The importance of websites is therefore undeniable for the expansion and success of businesses in the modern age.

The advent of website builders and eCommerce platforms has made building a professional business website truly accessible.

If you want your company to be successful in the modern marketplace, you’ve got to have a professional website design .

Your website is the backbone of your business, supporting all of your digital marketing efforts.

Below, we’ll discuss the  importance of a website for your business success and what you need to know about getting started with…

…a professional website for your business.

  • You need to have a place to send consumers to when they want to learn more about your business.

Not only does your website give you an opportunity to build credibility and authority, but it also helps you set yourself apart from the competition.

Even if you have a brick and mortar business that serves mostly local customers, your business can still benefit from a website.

Importance of a Website  for Marketing

The  importance of a website  for marketing extends to every aspect of your digital marketing strategy .

As the backbone of your online presence, every type of communication, piece of content.

Or, advertisement that you put online will drive the consumer back to your website.

As such, it’s important that your website gives consumers a clear idea of what your brand is about and what types of products or services you offer.

Let’s start with your social media marketing.

Though you use third-party social media sites to reach and engage with consumers.

You have to have a place to send consumers to when they want to learn more about your business.

Similar to our social media post below.

Let Us  Grow Your Revenue ...

We tell consumers we are an SEO company , but if they don’t know what SEO is, then they can learn more by following the link to a blog post about SEO.

importance of website essay

Your website serves as that “home base” where you can send customers when they want to make a purchase…

…or learn more about a particular product or service you offer.

The  importance of a website for content marketing is also significant. Your content needs a place to live.

Whether it’s blog posts or product descriptions , you need a place to display that information so that prospective customers can find it.

Your website is the perfect place to house all of the great content your business creates to inform…

…and engage your target audience – just like the blog post you’re reading right now, that’s providing you with more information.

Your website also plays an important role in your email marketing.

If you are using targeted email marketing to reach and engage your customers, then you need somewhere to send them to convert.

Your website is the perfect place to guide your email subscribers to when you want them to learn more about a product or even make a purchase.

You could do this in your weekly newsletter as we do.

They do this by clicking the links to our website.

Your PPC ads also need a place to lead consumers to.

PPC advertising is a great way to reach more of the consumers who are most likely to be interested in your products.

But you need to have a website that you can lead these consumers to when they click on your PPC ad.

Whether it’s a tailored landing page or a specific product page, the ad has to have a destination on your website.

links example

Your ad can also have multiple destinations to provide even more information…

…and cover more areas for what the user might be looking for when they type in their search.

The ultimate goal of your website is to answer all user questions with the information you provide.

The  importance of a website  for search engine optimization (SEO) lays in the way that this marketing tactic works.

When customers use the search engine to research products, services, brands, or even challenges.

The search engine delivers a list of web pages relevant to these topics.

So, if you want to bring some of this online traffic to your own business, you need a website to drive that traffic back to.

The more optimized this site is for search engines like Google, the more chances you have to reach new consumers.

Importance of a Website  for Sales

Sales are vital to every business. It’s the only way that you can keep your company up and running.

And improving sales is the best way to improve the health and success of your business. The  importance of a website  for sales cannot be overstated.

By having an online presence through your website, you are able to reach more consumers.

The more consumers you reach online, the more opportunities you have to make a sale.

Developing a website doesn’t automatically bring paying customers to your business.

However, through search engine optimization of your website.

You can improve your chances of bringing in more qualified leads who are more likely to make a purchase.

Not only does a website help you increase your sales opportunities, but it also increases your availability to make sales.

With a website, you can sell your products and services around-the-clock.

You don’t have to be actively engaging with leads on a constant basis because they are able to get the information they need from your site.

Additionally, your website offers another channel for sales.

In addition to selling your products and services online.

You can provide consumers with the information they need to make an informed purchasing decision.

Effectively, the content that’s on your site serves as an additional salesperson.

Helping customers get the information they need and convincing them of the benefits of your products or services.

Building Credibility with a Website

The  importance of a website  for building credibility is also something that brands need to consider.

In today’s digital marketplace, businesses without a website are seen as less credible.

The reason for this is because most companies have a website, so those that don’t may look like they have something to hide.

How does a website help you build credibility? Well, it allows consumers to see what your brand is all about.

In addition to showcasing your products and services, you can also tell consumers about your company and its mission.

By helping consumers get to know your business, you are working to establish trust.

Which is the first step in building long-lasting customer relationships.

Use your website to establish authority. When it comes to finding a reputable business, consumers want to know where a brand stands in the industry.

The content that you create and publish on your site helps show consumers that you know your stuff.

By providing valuable and educational content, you can work to build stronger relationships with consumers and encourage conversions.

Each company’s website content is unique.

That means that you have the opportunity to show leads and customers what sets your business apart from the rest through customized content.

You want to stay ahead of your competition.

If they have a website and you don’t, then you immediately just lost a customer determining which business they wanted to use.

Providing Accessibility Around the Clock

We touched on this when discussing the  importance of a website a little bit earlier in the post, but it’s worth emphasizing again.

A website provides access to your target audience around the clock.

Even when you and your team have checked out for the day, your website is still working hard to bring more customers to your business.

Imagine how many more sales you could make if you never slept. Well, luckily, you don’t have to give up sleep to reach your customers 24/7.

With a website, you provide a place for consumers to see what your brand is about and learn more about your products and services.

Any time of the day or night.

creative website marketing strategies

If you make your products available for sale on your website, then consumers can even make purchases around the clock.

By making it easy for consumers to browse and buy your products online, you’re making it as convenient as possible for leads to convert to customers.

And the best part is – you don’t physically have to be there to still reap the benefits of the sale.

Your website serves as your own personal digital salesperson.

Your site gives the consumer what they need to know about the product, makes the sale, and collects their payment information online.

Imagine this scenario: For instance, you are looking for an elliptical bike to buy, which of these two would you prefer?

Driving around searching for a local store that sells these bikes or sitting on your sofa at home, shopping for this bike online?

Obviously, most people prefer the latter.

That’s exactly why smart business owners build their own websites – to showcase what they can offer to customers.

Make the Right First Impression with Professional Web Design

Your website is often your customers’ first impression of your brand.

Even if you are a brick and mortar business that depends on local foot traffic.

There’s a good chance that your customers are researching your business online before they come in.

That is why it’s vital that you have a professional website.

The  importance of a website  cannot be overstated.

But if this website is unattractive or hard to navigate, then you may be turning your customers away without even knowing it.

In fact, a survey from Business 2 Community shows that 94% of people stated that web design is the top reason that they mistrust or reject a website.

Professional web design should include (but is not limited to) the following elements:

Simple Navigation –  It shouldn’t be hard for visitors to find what they’re looking for on your site without clicking around several times.

Navigation menus should be clear and simple, helping visitors find what they’re looking for in just a few moments.

Attractive Design –  Your site should be attractive, using colors and images that align with your brand while also being pleasing to the eye.

A professional site has a balance between attractive design and content that’s easy to read and quick to load.

Helpful Content –  The content on your site should be informative and help visitors better understand your products and services.

It also needs to emphasize relevant keywords that your consumers might use to find brands like yours online.

Professional site design includes  SEO services  that ensure consumers can find your site online.

get free website traffic with SEO

Fast Site Load Times –  If your site doesn’t load within a few seconds, visitors may be inclined to leave.

Professional website design will ensure quick load times to improve the user experience.

Easy Conversion –  Your website should make it easy for visitors to convert with a quick and simple check-out process.

Your shopping cart should also be easy for customers to use and come back to if they click away from your page.

If you don’t have the resources in-house to design and maintain a professional, working website.

Then you may need to get help from a web design agency. (But more on that in the next section!)

How to Get Started with a Website for Your Business

The  importance of a website  for your business success is clear. Without a website, you cannot reach and engage your target customers online.

In fact, we’d venture to say that if you want to do business in today’s modern marketplace, you  need  to have a website. But where do you start?

Getting started with a professional website for your business doesn’t have to be hard.

There are a variety of website building services that you can use to design your own attractive website in just a few hours.

Drag and drop website building services like SquareSpace and Wix are easy to use and affordable.

If you have some web design knowledge, you can also use WordPress , which is free to get started.

However, if you are serious about launching a professional website and optimizing your site for the search engines.

Then you may want to work with a professional web design agency.

Navigating the digital landscape.

In today's fast-paced digital era, the significance of web design cannot be overstated. Websites have become the virtual storefronts for businesses, serving as the first point of contact between a brand and its audience. In this article, we delve into the multifaceted importance of web design and its profound impact on user experience, brand perception, and search engine rankings.

Crafting a visually appealing interface

The power of aesthetics.

The visual appeal of a website is akin to a welcoming smile – it creates an instant connection. Studies show that users form opinions about a website within the first few seconds of visiting. A well-designed interface with eye-catching graphics and a cohesive color scheme can captivate visitors and keep them engaged.

Responsiveness matters

In an era dominated by smartphones and tablets, responsive web design is paramount. A site that adapts seamlessly to various devices ensures a consistent user experience, reducing bounce rates and enhancing user satisfaction.

User Experience: The Cornerstone of Success

Intuitive navigation.

Effortless navigation is the backbone of a positive user experience. A well-structured website , with clear menus and logical pathways, ensures that users can find what they're looking for without frustration.

Loading speed

In the digital realm, speed is of the essence. Slow-loading websites can drive users away and negatively impact search engine rankings. Optimal web design includes optimizing images, minimizing HTTP requests, and leveraging browser caching for swift loading times.

Brand identity: Beyond the logo

Consistency across platform.

Web design extends beyond aesthetics; it's a reflection of brand identity. Consistency in design elements, from color schemes to typography, fosters brand recognition across various platforms, instilling trust and credibility.

Establishing trust through design

A well-crafted website builds trust. Users are more likely to engage with a site that appears professional and reliable. Trustworthy design elements, such as secure payment gateways and transparent policies, contribute to a positive user perception.

SEO optimization: A key to visibility

Keywords and content harmony.

Search engine optimization ( SEO ) and web design go hand in hand. Integrating relevant keywords seamlessly into the content and meta tags enhances a website's visibility in search engine results. Striking the right balance ensures organic traffic flow.

Mobile-friendly design for SEO

Google prioritizes mobile-friendly websites in its rankings. Responsive design not only caters to user experience but also contributes significantly to SEO success. Mobile optimization is a non-negotiable element for a competitive edge.

Conclusion: Elevating online presence

In conclusion, the significance of web design transcends mere aesthetics; it is a strategic tool for enhancing user experience, solidifying brand identity, and boosting search engine rankings. Investing in a well-crafted website is an investment in the success and longevity of any online venture.

Importance of Website

Last week I was thinking about the importance of a website and how many businesses don't one. Depending on what report you look at anywhere from 44% to 51% of small businesses do not have a website. When I saw this statistic for the first time I could not believe it. As I called a list of local dental offices I quickly found out that most of them don't have a website.

Now I understand these statistics may actually be true. I was shocked. It made me think I should write an article on why having a website is important for your business if you want to get new customers, or even just keep your existing ones. This article summarizes all of the reasons that came to me as I wrote. I am sure there are more reasons why having a website is necessary for business, but these are the main ones that stick out to us. You can also listen to our podcast " What Is the Importance of a Website? " to learn more.

In my opinion, everyone should have a website because they are so inexpensive and yet so effective. Hopefully, my article will help you see the importance of a website for your business.  Profitworks  provides marketing services specializing in  search engine optimization  and  website conversion optimization services . 1. why are websites important 93% of business purchase decisions start with a search engine search of websites.

In order to gain new customers you need to understand where your prospects go when they are looking to find suppliers, research suppliers and make a purchase. In today's world the place where most people in most markets go is to the internet, specifically a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or Bing. These search engines are the big three (in that order) and account for over 90% of all searches. Google is by far the biggest with about 6 of every 10 searches. To learn more about the market share each search engine has go to ComScore .

Importance of Website: With 93% of business decisions starting with a search engine search that means if you don't have a website, you are only selling to 7% of your market. That is right, you are reducing the potential size of your business by 93%. I would suggest that the same statistic for consumer purchases is lower but still very high, especially for larger ticket items. The larger the item, the more research and shopping people will do. My guess is probably 40-50% of consumer purchases start with an online search. Have a website that will be search engine optimized and designed to drive sales.  Learn More ->

Why Having A Website Is Important - Market Potential - No Website

2. Why Is a Website Important? It Shows Your Professionalism

Another reason why a website is important for your business is that there is a large portion of the market that won't even consider you as an option when they are looking to buy, if you don't have one.  I know personally if I am dealing with a supplier I am looking to purchase from and they don't even have a website I pretty much write them off as an option and my view of that company is diminished. It gives me the impression that it is a company that is very poorly managed.

With this viewpoint why would I want to purchase from a company like this? Based on my experience most people think similar to myself. There are some people that do not hold this same thought but I would guess that probably 80% of people have bad opinions of companies that don't have websites.

Here's a look at the Profitworks website to give you an idea about how you could promote your business with a professional website.

3. Why is a Website Important for Your Business? It Gives You Ease Of Access

Having a website makes it very easy for people to find you, read up about your company, discover what you do, and answer a bunch of questions they have on your business. By having a website people will be able to find your company when they search for your company on a search engine like Google, Yahoo or Bing. It is true that if you don't have a website for your business, you may be found in a search engine if you have a listing in a directory, the yellow pages or your business could just automatically show up in a Google places result. Do you really want to leave this to chance though? Plus why not have a website so that you can influence what is displayed about your company and know your website will be listed in addition to having all those other search results. Which of the below results would you rather have for your company. Results like the first image or the last image?

Importance of Website: Search Results With a Website

Why Having A Website Is Important - Profitworks Search Results

Importance of Website: Search Results Without a Website

Why Having A Website Is Important - Harold Stecho Electric Ltd. Search Results

I would prefer the results shown in the first image as the results for Harold Stecho Electric Ltd. don't give me any enticement to contact them, very little information on what they do, no information on what value they provide and what makes them different. The search results for Profitworks are not perfect but they do describe what  Profitworks does right below the first link. The links also provide links to two free resources, enticing people to click on the links and an "about us" link where they can learn more about  Profitworks . I don't use this example to criticize Harold Stecho Electric Ltd. I just used the first company that came to mind that I knew did not have a website. I know they don't have a website as I tried to find their website the other day when doing some work for one of my clients .

Personally I would be hesitant to even spend time calling the results from Harold Stecho Electric Ltd. because the results that come up make me think they might be out of business. If I think this the case I usually don't phone as I feel it would be a better use of my time to phone a competitor that I know for sure is still in operation. These two examples further underline why websites are important.

A website also makes other forms of marketing so much easier. For example, as social media marketing continues to take off, being able to link back to a professional, user-friendly website with all the information the consumer needs is priceless! If you plan to set up ads, such as Facebook ads , you can direct users to your website's digital store, an information landing page, or whatever you think will be best to get a conversion. Have a website that will be search engine optimized and designed to drive sales.  Learn More ->

Importance of Website: It give you a place to direct your social media ads to

4. why website is important for business it's a low cost per impression marketing vehicle.

Having a website is important as it is an extremely low cost per impression marketing vehicle. Depending on the quality of the website designer you choose and the complexity of your site it will usually cost between $2,000 and $15,000. The more professional and customized, the higher the cost. For example using a professional company that does custom websites like REM Web Solutions website packages start at $3,600. The only other additional costs in addition to the website design is the website hosting , which is very inexpensive.

For example if you were to use Blue Host , which is a great hosting company and even includes free 24/7 support, you would probably be looking at about $6.95 a month if you sign up for their standard web hosting and a 36 month agreement. That is only $83.40 a year for your website hosting. P.S. The link above for  Blue Host is an affiliate link I will get a small commission from if you decide to purchase from them.

Lets assume that you spend $10,000 on the design of a website, to be conservative, and see how it compares to other marketing methods on a cost per 1,000 impression. If you are not familiar with what an impression is you can find a definition on our small business marketing dictionary . For this example I am also going to assume that the website gets 1,000 visits a month and that the average viewer views 3.5 pages each visit. This equates to 42,000 pages views a year and should be easily attainable for almost any website. Based on this assumption if you include the upfront cost of designing the website and look to amortize it over 5 years the cost per impression is high.

Taking this approach the total cost for the five years is $10,000.00 plus $83.40 a year for five years for a total of $10,417.00. During this time frame your impressions from your website would be 42,000 times five or 210,000.  This would work out to $48.01 per 1,000 impressions. This is not cheap but here is where it gets good. After this initial investment the ongoing costs are extremely low for those 42,000 impressions every year. In this example they work out to $1.98 because the cost is only $83.40 for those 42.000 impressions.

Importance of Website: Low Cost Per Impression

Why Having A Website Is Important - Website Cost Per 1000 Impressions

Having a website, next to Facebook Ads, is the most cost effective marketing method when looking at cost per 1,000 impressions. Your website will be much more effective though than Facebook Ads because people see your website they are actively engaged in learning about your company. Having people actively engaged on your website for multiple minutes at a time will result in many more leads and sales than a small Facebook Ad as most often people don't even notice Facebook Ads. If you want to learn about another great tactic for getting more leads from your website, listen to our podcast, " How Live Chat Can Work To Increase The Leads You Get From Your Website. "

5. Why Is a Website Important for Your Business? It Will Give You a Positive ROI

Another great reason as to why having a website is important is that is will give you a positive ROI. If we use the same example from the paragraph above for the first five years of having a website your costs will be $10,417.00. How many sales do you need to generate to pay this back? If you are in a business to business market my guess is that you may only need one sale to make your website investment worthwhile. If one sale is not enough, it is probably only a handful. The chances of your website generating more than a handful of customers over the course of five years is almost guaranteed given websites are about the #3 source of new customers for the average small business.

Even if you are in a business to consumer market how much in sales would you need, to make the website investment worthwhile....$25,000 maybe? Generating $25,000 over the course of 5 years from a website is peanuts. Do the math, but I am sure when you look at the numbers they will prove for themselves that it is worthwhile investing in a website. Have a website that will be search engine optimized and designed to drive sales.  Learn More ->

6. Why Is It Important to Have a Website? It Gives You Lasting Value

The great part about a website is that once you invest in it, you have it forever and it continues to work for your forever. What other advertising methods are there that once you pay for it once, it continues to work for your business for ever? Not many.

When you pay for a newspaper ad you get that one ad and any benefit that one ad generates but after that ad it is done. That money you spent on the newspaper ad is gone and you can never get it back. If you don't get a return on investment from it, you never can. The same is true for Google Adwords, Facebook Ads, Linkedin Ads, a Yellow Pages listing, magazine ads etc. Where as with a website, if you don't make a positive ROI in the first year, no worries because you have from now until the end of time to get a return on your investment. Have a website that will be search engine optimized and designed to drive sales.  Learn More ->

7. why is it important to have a website for your business it gives you opportunities abroad.

By getting a website it makes it possible for anyone in the world to find your business. If you have a product that can be easily sold online you can dramatically increase your customer base by selling online. To learn more about how to do this, read my article Expand Customer Base By Selling Online . Or maybe you can't sell your services online but by having a website you can gain customers that are outside the geographic reach of your marketing efforts.

Here's a great story that illustrates this. About 6 months ago I got a call from a man in Calgary interested in my services. I could have never generated a lead from someone in Calgary with any of my current marketing methods, except for my website. This example illustrates how having a website opens the doors for your business to a much larger geographic area......the entire world.

Importance of Website: Customers all over the world can find you

8. why is website important it's an easily accessible data center.

Another great reason why a website is important is that it can also act as a data center for your own employees, customers, and your prospects. A great example of this is my customer Gold Roast . They provide office coffee & warm beverage services, coffee, tea & espresso machine repairs, and sell coffee, tea and espresso machines. Basically anything with coffee, tea or espresso they do it. How they utilize their website as a data center is they provide their customers with login's to their complete product catalog. This allows customers to easily find any product they want and place an order for them. It also makes it easy for customers to find replacement products if they want to change the coffee or tea products they order.

For  Gold Roast it saves them money by not having to print out paper catalogs, they never need to reprint catalogs when pricing changes, it saves them time by never having to send the customer the catalog or updates to the catalog (hard copy or digital copies) and it increases orders as it makes it much easier for customers to place an order. This is just one example but there are many ways a website can be used as a data center to to save labor hours and costs.

Having lots of relevant information on your website i not only a great resource for your customers, but it will also help you rank higher in Google search results. 9. How To Add A Blog To Your Website

Another advantage of having a blog on your website is that it amplifies your ability to rank for and generate traffic from an ever-growing number of search phrases.

10. Why Is A Website Important for Business? It Provides Self Service Customer Support

Another advantage of having a website is that it can improve your customer support and as a result improve your overall customer service. A website can do this if you post support Q&As on your website or create a forum where users can ask each other questions about your product and other users can answer these questions. These answers to common problems or questions are then available on the internet if other customers search in a search engine for a solution to this problem.

You can also direct customers to these online documented resources so that they can solve the problem themselves. This can make things much faster for your customers and also make your customer support department more efficient. Not all products or services can benefit from a troubleshooting forum, but I would argue all products could benefit from a Q&A page for commonly asked questions as well as a forum where customers can post any questions, comments or feedback they have about a product.

As I struggled to come up with a topic for this article, I thought about my last one , where I compared social media to attending a cocktail party. There is so much talk about the importance of social media for businesses. It can be an incredible source of information, a valuable lead generation tool and also a complete waste of time, if it's not handled properly. That’s quite a polarization.

I've found that for most businesses, social media falls into the second category — lead generation. Most businesses post content on social media to retain and recruit customers. Restaurants post food images to entice new customers to come in for a meal. Hotels post images of their properties to entice customers to visit. Architects and interior designers post images of their completed projects to show their acumen for design. There are countless articles online about how to manage social media channels for your business, like my previous article. What I don't see talked about as often is the website that people go to after they take your bait on social media. To me, that raises the question: What is the role of the website in today’s digital environment?

Most of what we do in digital marketing, be it SEO, social media, pay-per-click or email marketing, is to drive quality leads to a website and encourage them to complete a form, make a phone call or make a purchase. That’s the end game for most businesses. I always tell our clients that they need to think about their website as the mother ship — it’s the most important piece of your digital marketing assets. You work so hard and spend so much money to drive quality leads to your website; you can’t fumble when you get to the goal line. You've worked way too hard.

This reminds me of when restaurants tell a party of two that there aren't any tables available because they're saving their four-tops in case a larger party comes in. The customer is at your door, so give them a seat and pour them some wine. Don’t lose visitors upon arrival by giving them a negative first impression. They likely won’t come back. The same advice applies to your website: Once your guests arrive, greet them and gently escort them to where you want them to go.

Long gone are the days when a website was akin to a digital yellow pages listing — a place to put some information about your business and your contact information. The internet is so saturated with information now that it seems like search engines like Google can barely keep up, especially after they inject paid placements into your search results.

Consider these statistics:

• There are more than 1.7 billion websites on the internet, and according to one report , 52% of all web traffic comes from bots.

• One marketing analytics firm found that almost 50% of all Google searches are "zero-click searches," meaning that the user ends their search without clicking on any of the results pages.

My point is that generating quality leads on the internet is getting harder and more expensive. There's a lot of competition to get on the first page of Google, where 71% of all search traffic clicks occur. That’s why it’s critical to have a website that operates like a well-oiled machine. Make sure it's easy to navigate on mobile phones, desktops and tablets. Make sure it welcomes visitors and has an easily recognized path to services, bios, testimonials and most importantly, your call-to-action points — online forms, phone numbers and reservation boxes.

Take website development seriously by conducting a functionality and design phase. To use another brick and mortar analogy, launching a website with a poor design is like running a business on Main Street with no sign, no lights and no door. Make sure you have on-page SEO elements, that your site is optimized for mobile, that you have security installed (SSL) and that you have clickable phone numbers. Also include qualifying data like testimonials, case studies or a client list, and list several different ways for visitors to contact you.

Don't simply hire the local hipster you met at the coffee shop to create your business website. You wouldn’t do that to fix your car, so why would you do that with something so important to your business? Make sure your website developer has SEO, marketing, lead generation and programming knowledge because your competitors likely will.

Your website is the mother ship; it's where all the important information is exchanged and where the most important digital actions take place. It’s not something to be taken lightly, and it’s not something to skimp on.

importance of website

Today with the advent of the internet, the world has become a smaller place. Any kind of information is easily available and at our fingertips. The world of the internet is amazing and it continues to transform our lives, the way we communicate, the way we receive and share information and live a quality life.

Today many people are spending most of their time over the internet, it could be either for purchasing products or reading news or watching a movie or using a service etc.

With the amount of time being spent on the internet, business website owners have realized the importance of being online and have started moving their businesses and services online.

Living in the digital world, just like switching to a virtual business card , having a website is very crucial for any business. If a business does not have a website, it is missing several business opportunities and potential customers.

A business website helps in accomplishing a number of digital marketing strategies that can help a business grow . Web advertising has a wide reach and is one of the most effective forms of advertising.

Considering how easy it is to create a website and how many themes and options there are out there, every business should have one.

A website helps market a business online and helps build credibility. There are several reasons why a website is important for your business, let us look at some of the main reasons.

Importance of Website: 7 Reasons why your business needs it

Improves credibility.

One of the main reasons to have a website for your business is to increase the company’s credibility. In most cases, there are several businesses in the market that are offering products or services similar to yours.

When starting a business , one of the most important elements to think about is credibility. This is why you should consider incorporating a logo slider on your website to showcase client logos, highlight your partnerships, and boost your business’s credibility with a visual touch. A high-quality webpages development company that uses advanced web design software can help you create a website that looks polished and professional, which will give your business an instant boost in credibility.

Having an attractive, professional website is the best way to stand out from the competition. A good effective website helps build a strong online presence and helps communicate quality information to your consumers.

Today not having a website may raise a question of its legitimacy. Customers expect legitimate, trustworthy businesses to have a website and social media accounts. A website can be the face of your business, it helps create a strong first impression, builds trust and credibility in the minds of the consumers.

Brand Awareness

A website helps create brand awareness and showcasing your brand to prospective customers. It helps to establish your image by letting the audience know who you are and what you represent.

A website provides reliable information to the consumers, which helps in setting your business apart from the competitors .

The same can be said about your social media presence. For business owners (although it depends on a niche Instagram is arguably #1 social media platform for everyone) a strong Instagram presence is one of the keys to success.

Ranking high in the search results will ensure that when people search online for a product or service similar to yours, they will be able to view your website and will visit it to get more information. This will give you an opportunity to increase your customer base. If this type of approach does not work for some reason, third party social media platforms are where you need to go for help.

For instance, if you have a specific post, picture, reel or a video that you need to go viral, at least in your circle, consider buying Instagram likes or Facebook Live views from SocialZinger so that it gets the initial boost it needs to then blow up and reach your target audience.

Generating Leads, Increasing Sales

One of the most fascinating reasons to have a website for your business is that it can help generate more leads and increase sales . When people search online and can find your business they try to gather more information about your products or services and the company as a whole.

A website is the best way for a consumer to gather information about a business. They can get the contact details of the business from the website, giving you a growth opportunity and a chance to increase your sales.

Even though developing and maintaining websites involve a cost, when used appropriately, they have a positive ROI. You can always turn to services like SendPulse and design a landing page for your business, which is a lot cheaper than a website.

If you sell products from your website , you can use a plugin to create sales funnels to help increase sales and minimize abandoned carts.

Attract Organic Traffic

If you have developed an effective website using various search engine optimization techniques, there are very high chances your website will rank well in the Google search results.

Ranking high in the search results will ensure that when people search online for a product or service similar to yours, they will be able to view your website and will visit it to get more information. This will give you an opportunity to increase your customer base.

Improve Customer Experience

Businesses frequently receive calls from prospective or existing customers to inquire about simple questions like the address or hours of operation etc.

Many times you or your staff may not be able to attend and reply to all calls, this may leave a customer unhappy and you make lose a prospect. Having to answer so many calls can also affect the productivity of the staff as a lot of time is lost on attending calls.

Having a website can reduce the number of calls received and also improve the productivity of the employees. A well-designed website can help customers to find useful information easily without calling. Easy access to information can boost customer experience.

In order to maximize customer experience, businesses construct web applications with dynamic user interfaces . Many forms of engagement, such as text surveys , quizzes, and branded games, can be used to better connect with an audience. As opposed to traditional websites, web applications are designed for end-user interaction, not just for displaying content.

Updates And Announcements

A website is accessible 24/7, you can post regular updates and announcements on it and customers can be notified easily. It is the easiest way to keep the customers updated about what the business is doing and what it plans for the future. This is a great way to remain connected with your customers.

Digital Marketing

If you are working on a digital marketing plan to grow your business , you would want to drive more traffic to your website or landing page . To achieve your digital marketing goals, try leveraging historic traffic to your website .

This will help you to target the most qualified customers and achieve the best ROI on your advertising spend. This cannot be achieved retrospectively, you need to have a website running effectively before you plan to run online ads .

Time to get a Website for your Business

We have seen the importance of a website for a business. Without a website, it is difficult to reach out to prospective and existing customers and engage them online.

Even if you don’t have an online business and only run a brick and mortar business serving local customers, a website can still help your business. Any business trying to make a name for itself in the modern marketplace needs to have a website and spy their competitors.

For those businesses that need to access blocked sites, they can do so with a VPN, especially those recommended in Black Friday VPN Deals. Websites are geo-restricted, and they can only be accessed by a reliable VPN . With it, businesses can access content and resources that can help their operations reach new heights.

To get a professional website developed for your business and to optimize it for the search engines requires expertise. You can work with experienced website designers and hire top developers to get an effective website made.

Importance of Web Development: Essay Introduction

Developments, cultural benefits, conclusion for web development, works cited.

At the outset, web designing emerged as an easier and simple way of exchanging information. It was a better means of communication and had better networking benefits compared to the commercial reasons. Later on, the Web became an avenue for making profits, and the information space that was prior for providing free exchange thus changed to a space for commercial transactions.

The open source movement first emerged when major players met and decided to begin the initiative of licensing to protect software developers. The movement was therefore a licensing measure meant to make source codes available to others beside the author through leasing.

There was also need to allow programmers to distribute their software freely and enable people to modify source codes. The current web-based software developers such as PHP, Firefox, WordPress and Linux are thus major contributors to development of modern websites. Open source has consequently had a direct influence on web development and browsing such as flexibility and innovative development initiatives in addition to providing network solutions.

Development of ‘open source’ receives very little attention especially official concerns by the initial founders for its development. The initial organizations to benefit from the open licensing systems directly included the Department of Defence (DOD), Research Agencies, and the Lab researchers such as National Laboratories (Reece et al, 92). These organizations were the most viable producers, users and beneficiaries of the licensing operation.

The firms also provided the platform for major advances such as the firewalls, and other network security tools. Open licensing therefore caused firms to merge ideas and integrate development of operating systems and related software to high-tech but inexpensive software/hardware supercomputers to replace the original Pentium-based systems.

Although departments such as the DOD or Space Agencies may have developed or initiated most of the research into open source, in overall, today’s beneficiaries include commercial agencies. Commercial enterprises such as Netscape, Red Hat, Cygnus, MacAfee and Caldera were quick to realize the opportunities offered by web-based methodologies and begun to offer the open source arrangements.

Other firms that latter on came in support of open source included the hardware developers such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Sun Microsystems and IBM (International Business Machines) among others. Consistent with VanDyk, the concept open source emerged from software engineers, but today the entire movement is made of technologically motivated individuals (9). They focus more on technological productivity as opposed to economical benefits.

Although the initial authors retain all the rights of their code, restrictions are less and simpler to allow others to utilize the code. Today, different countries have constitutions supporting the freedom of speech. Users never thought programs would be freeware in a manner comparable to the way verbal communication is an inalienable right today. Redistribution of software code does not face unnecessary restriction, since developers found that ‘open source’ is an effective way of finding and correcting faulty codes.

Open source also encourages reliability and quality of software due to the independent reviews and the rapid dynamic nature of the web-based programming. According to Van Reijswoud, the simplified way of defining ‘open source’ may appear more pervasive compared to technical definition (230).

The open form of licensing allows any individual developer as well as a corporation to give others freedom to change competence and quality of a code, at the same time retain ownership as long as the beneficiaries agree to equally share the code with others under similar terms of agreement.

This form of web development allows development of new web programmers particularly among users who wish to make their contributions on success and quality of products. Web development has therefore advanced to allow better distribution of expertise through refinement of existing codes. Experts are also able to provide new services through innovation and inspired creations.

The new trend of user-developer enhances development of diverse and advanced modern websites. Open source therefore allows a progressive form of dynamism that is almost impossible to achieve given any other condition that developers may find (Meeker, 38). There is a revolution on the way the software engineering industry has developed in terms software quality and ability to assist beneficiaries from the developments.

Current success of the internet is for the reason that there is direct success of the open source form of web development. Success of World Wide Web therefore indicates the evolution and power of open content. According to Richter, ‘open source’ is a form of licensing that affects development, distribution and use of software, thus causing direct change on corporations (281). It assists to focus innovation of information technology to ensure generation of profits.

Pragmatism demands that people share ideas and beliefs as opposed to involvement in scientific formulae. Open source has therefore been on constant demand among human needs indirectly, since proponents hold up to strict scrutiny of applications. Scientists allow extensive source code usage and analysis, which often means critical review of design, functionality, structure and content.

In line with Allen et al, programming involves more that art or design work, it has a foundation of functionality and practical knowledge (81). Technology maturity has thus caused spreading of knowledge and enhancement of techniques. Programmers are ready and more willing to have their codes examined, verified and used by others. Allowing others to use the code is mostly based on utmost good faith that the favour will be replicated or returned as opposed to financial benefits.

Employers of excellent source-code providers such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sun Microsystems, IBM and other corporations also have a direct benefit of fame, recognition and demand for goods or services. Their products are a direct reflection of business personality, capabilities, and the collaborative nature.

The use of ad hoc organizations has assisted in great developments, for instance the Apache Group were able to build up the most popular server “World Wide Web”, without ever convening. Working partners such as the Berkeley Software developers’ in-charge of commercial firewalls have employees working from various locations and collaborate electronically. Open licensing therefore allows organizations to pull web-based initiatives together and ensure survival of best products without disenfranchising anyone.

Programmers are becoming smarter to ensure production of the best and greatest codes compared to potential competitors. The easiness of obtaining the source code is also a great inspiration and a guide for many initial code developers especially web designers. An author of a code can find feedback such as suggestions or criticisms from other users and this is vital for systems productivity.

Companies such as Microsoft can also be able to find the open-source teams and expand their capabilities indefinitely since such measure is global and allows full-time international interactions. In line with Koch, open source enables a firm to ensure continuous use, maintenance and enhancement of a product (5). They must be able to integrate change on future developments to ensure competitive investment. The systems are able to harness sustainability, through collaboration of users and developers.

Although code developers are eager to maintain a reputation in the industry, open source may compromise need to recognize ownership of the original version of code. Indiscipline among users and lack of tight security measures to protect originality leads to existence of multiple versions of a code. With such scenario arising, it is extremely difficult to give credit where it is due. The uses are supposed to benefit from enhanced applications and related financial benefits, while the initial developer gets recognition.

Software developers have often engaged and appreciated the open source form of programming due to easiness on implementation of aspects that initially seemed to conflict such as reliability, innovativeness and interoperability. Internet community ought to value creativity and efficiency and ensure that accomplishments are not redone/duplicated but rather improved.

Good open source software incorporates other common data formats, and these forms of reuse and refinement have previously enhanced development of quality and unique software. There are various debates based on open source especially envisioning future prospects of the field of sharing codes. The current research studies on the matter provide only a glimpse of the facts and fail to expound on the possible pedagogy and technological changes.

Today there is a unique but exiting era and as Canne puts it, “the perfect e-storm is becoming less cloudy and ominous” (151). The writer emphasizes the importance of maintaining the idea of open licensing. Founders such as CISCO termed open sources as the greatest investment a company and consequently the government can make.

Open source applications are thus the basis for implementation of the Internet, as well as mail servers. Ideas of the programmers provide chances for improvement, scaling and reutilization of code to achieve new goals. Various internet protocols such as TCP/IP are a long lasting communication and sharing rules still in use on any network today.

Why web design is important.

As you look into redesigning your website, you may wonder the importance to website design. How does it impact your audience and your business? Let’s look at five reasons web design is important.

1. It sets the first impression

When your audience visits your website, it gives them their first impression of your business. They will judge your business within seconds. In these first few seconds, you want to make a positive impact on your audience.

If your website looks unappealing or outdated, your audience will immediately have a negative impression of your business. They won’t find your website appealing, which deters them from your page. You’ll miss out on leads because they’ll leave your page for a competitor’s page.

Web design is important because it impacts how your audience perceives your brand. The impression you make on them can either get them to remain on your page and learn about your business or leave your page and turn to a competitor. A good web design helps you keep your leads on your page.

why is website design important

2. It aids your search engine optimization (SEO) strategy

Many web design elements and practices influence how you publish content on your website, which in turn affects how search engine spiders crawl and index your website. That’s why the best web design companies will include SEO with their services.

This is one thing you cannot afford to mess up. If your  on-page SEO fundamentals  are not up to snuff, you’ll be fighting an uphill battle for visibility from the start.

Aside from how  content is published  on your website, certain web design elements can directly affect SEO in and of themselves. Web design can be difficult to understand if you’re not familiar with how it works, but to put it simply, your code needs to be SEO-friendly.

The best way to ensure proper web design practices (and subsequent search engine visibility) is to partner up with a  web design agency that includes SEO services as a part of their package.

3. It sets the impression for customer service

People can judge how you will treat them by looking at your website. Your design gives them insight as to how you view your audience. If you don’t put any effort into your website’s design, your audience knows that you won’t put effort into helping them.

Your website is like a customer service representative. If your website is bright, modern, and inviting, your audience will feel more welcome on your page. You’ll give the impression that you are open and welcoming to new people who visit your website.

On the other hand, an outdated and unappealing site makes your business appear cold and aloof. People don’t want to check out a business that doesn’t value them enough to make a good first impression.

Think of your web design as the digital face of your business. If someone walked into your physical location, wouldn’t you want a friendly face to greet them and make them feel welcome? An updated and modern web design is the equivalent to a friendly face greeting your new visitors.

design and usability importance

4. It builds trust with your audience

People don’t trust poorly designed websites. If they see your poor design or the information looks outdated, they won’t trust your site. They may view your site as seedy or shady because you don’t have an updated web design.

Think about a person looking to place a bulk order with a manufacturing company. They’re spending a tremendous amount of money, which means if your  manufacturing website design  doesn’t convey trust, they’ll find another business to fulfill their order.

On the other hand, a professional site signals trust with your audience. They will trust your business and feel comfortable checking it out further.

It’s important to build trust with your audience so they remain on your site. When visitors remain on your site longer, you create more opportunities for your business to capture those leads.

5. Your competitors are doing it

If you need a reason for why web design is important, here’s a big one: Your competitors are already utilizing web design. If you want to remain in competition with them, you must use web design for your site.

You want your website to stand out from the competition. If you have an old, outdated, and low-quality website, your competitor’s will outrank you. Their well-designed website will perform better than your website.

This means you’ll lose leads to your competitors. They’ll attract more leads to their page because their page is more appealing.

Your website’s design is an opportunity for you to set your business apart from the competition. When you’re competing with other businesses, you generally have the same services and similar pricing. You need that one thing that will make your business stand out from the rest.

Beat the competition with your website design

A well-designed website is an opportunity for your business to showcase your unique features. You can show your audience why they should choose your business over the competition.

6. It creates consistency

When you’re trying to get new leads for your business, you want to build up your brand. You want your audience to get familiar with your brand so they choose you when they’re ready to convert. Online web designs are important because they help create consistency across your page.

You need to have the same fonts, styles, and layouts across every page on your website. If you have a different design on every page, this will make your site look unprofessional. It also makes it more challenging to build brand recognition because your audience won’t know which colors to associate with your brand.

If your website is not consistent, people will bounce from yours to one that looks more professional. By building consistency, you keep leads on your page longer and get them familiar with your business. You’ll earn more leads and conversions down the line when you redesign your site for this key element.

7 important elements of quality web design

Now that you know the web design importance, it’s time to start looking at elements that make a quality design. Here are seven key elements you’ll want to incorporate into your web design.

1. Solid navigation

When users access your site, they want to access information quickly and easily. If you want leads to remain on your page, you must implement a navigation that is easy for your audience to use.

Your audience doesn’t want to struggle to find information. They want to access your navigation bar and easily be directed to the information they need. If your navigation is poor, you’ll discourage your audience from engaging on your page.

Visitors’ attention spans are short. If you want to keep them on your page, you must help them access information quickly. A properly designed navigation will help them get to the information they need.

Your navigation should be simple and self-explanatory. Include broad headings that encompass numerous subtopics, so your audience can easily find the information they need. This is the easiest way for you to help your audience find information fast.

2. Responsive design

With the growth in mobile devices, responsive design is more important than ever. Your audience will access your site from a multitude of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. If you want these leads to remain on your site, you must ensure that each person has a positive experience.

Responsive design ensures that your audience has a good experience on your site, regardless of the device they use. Your website will adapt to the device to ensure that your website is sized appropriately for their device. This is valuable for keeping leads engaged and interested in your site.

Responsive design keeps leads engaged on your page longer. If you want to have a successful website design, you must integrate responsive design.

3. Style guide

As we stated previously, one reason why web design is important is because it creates consistency across your entire website. Consistency helps your audience build brand recognition and keeps them engaged on your page longer. A style guide will help you keep a consistent brand image on your website.

How to establish brand recognition through web design

Your style guide is the basis for how you want your website to look. You decide the color, format, typography, and more, for every page on your website. This ensures that every time someone adds an element to your site it is consistent with other pages.

You’ll help your team creates consistency across your website, too. They can reference your style guide anytime they add an element to your site. It makes it easier for different people to work on your website and add elements to it.

When you have a consistent design across your website, you create a more cohesive site. Your audience will engage on your site longer and build brand recognition. This will help you earn more conversions down the line.

4. Purposeful visuals

Companies are quick to integrate visual elements because they help improve engagement on a website. In fact, customers are  10 times more likely  to interact with a video than text.

While visual elements are great for engagement and breaking up text, some businesses go overboard with the images. Their sites are crowded with photos and videos. It makes the site feel overwhelming and cluttered.

You may think that it’s great to integrate and abundance of photos and videos to increase engagement, but it can become overwhelming if there are too many. Too many images makes it difficult to read on the page.

If you want to see success with your site, you must create a balance between images and text on your page. Don’t add visual elements for the sake of trying to increase engagement as much as possible.

Use visual elements purposefully. If you have a block of text detailing your services, integrate a video below that text that explains your services further. This still gives your audience a point of interest to interact with and keeps them engaged.

When you know why web design is important, you make more tactful decisions about your site. As you build your dream website, it’s crucial that you don’t overload your site with too many visual elements.

5. Good copy

Your audience visits your website to obtain important information. It’s important that when you include information on your site, you write quality copy.

Writing good copy keeps your audience engaged on the page longer. They’ll read all your information and learn about your business. Your style of writing should align with the style of your website for consistency.

The content on your site matters just as much as the overall design, so it’s necessary for you to provide your audience with valuable information they need.

6. Call-to-action (CTA) buttons

Once you have leads on your site, you want to guide them towards converting. A key element of that is your  call-to-action (CTA) button . Web design importance is evident when you’re trying to get your audience to act.

A well-designed CTA button will get your audience to proceed to the next step. These buttons fit into your design but stand out on the page. Your audience’s eye immediately goes to these buttons.

Why are CTAs important in web design

If you had a color scheme of black, white, gray, and yellow, a yellow CTA button would stand out on the page compared to these other colors. It still fits with the scheme, but people will automatically be drawn towards a bright yellow button.

By integrating CTA buttons into your website’s design, you’ll help drive better results on your page.

7. Page speed

You can have an awesome website design, but it won’t matter if your audience never gets to see it. Page speed is an important element of web design. It ensures that your page loads quickly, so your audience can access information fast.

Your audience hates to wait for slow loading pages. If your page takes too long to load, your audience will lose interest. They will return to the search results and select a competitor’s page instead.

You can check your page’s speed by using  Google PageSpeed Insights . This tool allows you to see how quickly your site currently loads and where you can  make improvements . You must make these improvements on your own.

The other option is to rely on  page speed services  from a digital marketing company. This allows you to reap the benefits of a fast loading page, while focusing on running your business.

Purpose-Web design has been identified as a key factor for the acceptance and success of the websites and electronic commerce. The purpose of this paper is to analyse, from a marketing point of view the main aspects that could influence online users' perceptions and behaviours, in order to achieve a successful e-commerce website. Design/methodology/approach-An extensive literature review was developed emphasising the special role that web design could play in the interaction user-interface. Besides, the methodology related to benchmarking allows firms to know the best practices and to learn some key lessons for developing their businesses online. Findings-The literature review affirms that web design is a key factor for getting positive outcomes as it influences on users and online consumers' perceptions and behaviours. A website design addressed to simplicity and freedom of navigation provides clear, timely and accurate information in all its contents and an appearance that calls for the users' attention. Research limitations/implications-The paper offers a Decalogue of guidelines that could improve the design of the e-commerce websites regarding the aesthetic appearance of the website, the navigation through the site, the information and contents and the characteristics of the shopping process. It could be interesting to analyse empirically the impact of all key attributes on the users' perceptions and behaviours. Originality/value-This is one of the first studies which explains how a website must be designed from the demand's perspective. The analysis of the users' perceptions and the marketing view of design could help designers to find the website that best matches their users' needs and so, to improve the relationships between users and companies through their interfaces.

Website design practice has evolved a lot. Websites are no longer designed from scratch but based on existing designs and patterns, and very often they are implemented using Web Content Management Systems (WCMS). Given all this support, it seems that the traditional web design methods, developed in the past, are no longer relevant. However, we argue that they still have a role to play, but they should be adapted to the new development practice and exploit this during the design process to make the development of a website easier and faster while still guaranteeing a well designed and usable website. In this paper , we show how an existing website design method, WSDM, has been adapted to take current development practice into consideration while still respecting the core principles and benefits of the method.

We are familiar with the term Web Engineering, but not quit so with Web Architecting. The activities of Web Architecting precede all other activities in a project. Working trend and working habit are tending toward more mobility. Small and light weight computing devices will out sale stationary units by the year 2013. We-based application and Web-based services are used to deploy 'Software as a Service' of Cloud Computing. The Web is becoming more important than ever.

Background: Whether a website design is a simple static page of plain text, a complex e-commerce matrix or a progressive web application, the journey is riddled with challenges. In terms of online users, every second counts when interacting with a website. It is estimated that 2 seconds is the acceptable webpage loading latency that users are willing to tolerate before abandoning a webpage. Users expect web applications to be more usable, reliable, secure, personalised and context-aware. Objectives: This study sought to identify the challenges faced and the strategies used during website development, and to then map a conceptual framework to address these challenges. Method: The 7Cs framework was the theoretical framework underpinning the study. Based on qualitative research, 12 website developers were sampled in Gauteng Province, South Africa, using non-probability sampling methods. Results: The 7Cs Website Development Scheme (7CWDS) charted from the research findings shows that the following strategies are essential in overcoming website development challenges: (1) good communication between developer and client, (2) agile planning and acceptance of project scope, (3) creation of website drafts and acceptance, (4) flexible website designs, (5) agile website development using a step-by-step approach, (6) website connections to Google Analytics, (7) connecting website to social media and (8) website cybersecurity scanning and testing. Conclusion: The study developed the 7CWDS as a toolkit that underlines critical strategies to address common challenges in website development, and presents them in a logical hierarchy and order of execution. Keywords: Website development; 7Cs framework; Website development challenges; Website development strategies; 7Cs Website Development Scheme; 7CWDS.

The Importance of a Website for a Business

Topic Website

A website: The Digital Face of a Business

A website is the representative face of a business to the world and is defined as the digital footprint of the organization. It is a digital tool that helps an entity or institution reach a wider customer base who can view the products that the company specializes in, and a platform where they can share their feedback. A website helps to reach out to numerous customers, with no limitation of the geographical location and is tailored to meet the needs of the clients even before getting information from the representatives. Moreover, it is easy for the customers to purchase a product from the organization or learn more about it.

Establishing a Website

The first step in establishing a website for a company is setting the homepage and continue filling more details on each page. The details should be kept simple with more explanations added later. Any person who is browsing on a website is interested in knowing what it’s all about, what is offered in the website and the value that is added to them by the website (Cordasco, 2015). For this study, it will focus on two websites, one which is not candy eye and another one that is breathtaking in highlighting the major points for the company or organization through the internet digital footprint. Among the poorest websites which I’ve experienced is the msy website whose website is http://www.msy.com.au/home.php . On the other hand, a fantastic website which fascinated me is the Dropbox website, whose address is https://www.dropbox.com/?landing=dbv2 .

The Importance of Simplicity in Web Design

When designing a website, it is preferable to keep it simple. A website should not be used for a show-off, but maintain simplicity, it is the ultimate form of sophistication. A website may require graphics and pictures, which are used in getting the required information. It is important to keep it clear as a design feature in itself. Moreover, the links should be kept with very few items. The msy website has almost no clear space, with graphical decorations spread all over terribly, until it is difficult to view what is contained on the website. Dropbox, on the other hand, is clear with a wide white space coverage and substantial graphical elaborations, which makes it easy to get around the website (Wu, Nguyen, "Husain, 2015). The website path ought to be easy for the customers to navigate. The drop box website has a clearly thought navigation route with all the pages being linked to the homepage similar to spokes on a wheel. The menus are concise and straight. The navigation runs horizontally across the top page in an orientation similar to a tab or vertically stacked items on the left side of the page. The homepage contains no funny scripts, unlike the msy website. There is an excessive use of jargon in the msy website, which is a common mistake in most websites.

Striking a Balance: Search Engine and Readability

The website designers should strike a balance in an effective search engine and the website being readable just like for Dropbox. Clarity is attained by use of distinct fonts, with attention paid to the sharpness and contrast of the images. The color decor carries the theme of the website and conveys the information about the company. A server-side database assesses the permissions from the server and sends the response to the client while the web-based applications do all the functions (Cordasco, 2015). It retrieves data from the network, which makes business more efficient as well as reduce the need for installation from the end of the client. The web interfaces are unbound, thus allowing many users in one go. After a page is loaded with the interface, there is no need of connecting to the database. It is imperative to maintain a source bound by an interface as the server reduces the periodical users.

Almost 85% of marketers believe building links is essential for improving their brand's visibility. While effective link-building can bring a website to the top of search results, not all links are beneficial. Some can be harmful to your site’s health. In this article, we'll understand the process of identifying and removing these harmful links (known as toxic backlinks) to protect your site and help your  SEO efforts.

Why Are Backlinks Important for Your Site?

Backlinks are simply links from other websites that lead to yours. These links help search engines see your website as valuable and trustworthy, thereby improving your site's visibility in search results. However, links from low-quality or suspicious sites can damage your reputation with search engines. These are what we call “toxic backlinks.” Using a  free backlink checker can help you identify all the backlinks pointing to your site and remove the toxic ones.

Steps to Identify and Remove Toxic Backlinks

Removing toxic backlinks isn’t all that complicated. Here’s how you can start identifying and dealing with toxic backlinks:

Step 1: Identify Your Backlinks

The first step in cleaning up your website backlinks is to figure out who is linking to you. Using a free backlink checker can help with this. These tools allow you to see all the backlinks pointing to your site without paying. Just type in your website’s URL, and the tool will show you the websites that link back to different pages on your site. Knowing who links to you is the first step in determining which links might be harmful.

Step 2: Assess the Quality of Each Backlink

Once you have a list of all the backlinks, it's time to look closely at each one to determine if it might be toxic. Here are a few signs that a backlink might be harmful:

  • Source Quality: Does the backlink come from a website that seems shady or filled with spam? If the site looks unprofessional or has content that is stuffed with keywords and ads, it might be a bad sign.
  • Relevance:  Is the website related to your industry or niche? If not, the link may be considered suspicious.
  • Anchor Text: The visible, clickable text in a hyperlink is the anchor text. If it's filled with keywords and doesn't fit naturally into the site's content, it could be seen as manipulative.
  • Number of Links: If a site links to hundreds or thousands of other sites, it could be a link farm, which is definitely bad for SEO.

Step 3: Create a List of Toxic Backlinks

After examining each backlink for quality and relevance, it’s time to put together a list of the ones you think could be harmful to your website. Be very careful during this step. You want to make sure not to mistakenly label a good backlink as toxic, as this can damage your SEO performance just as much as a  weak link can.

Go through your evaluations thoroughly and double-check each link you consider suspicious. This will help guarantee that you only target links that genuinely pose a risk to your site’s health.

Step 4: Reach Out for Removal

The next step is to try to remove the harmful backlinks manually. Contact the owners of the websites linking to you and ask them kindly to remove the links. When you reach out, be polite and provide them with the specific URL where your link can be found. Even though not everyone will respond, many will appreciate your courteous approach and even comply with your request.

Step 5: Use Google's Disavow Tool

If you can’t get a toxic backlink removed because the site owner doesn’t respond or refuses, you can ask Google not to consider these links when evaluating your site. Google offers a tool called the disavow tool for this. Here’s how to use it:

  • Prepare Your List:  Write down the URLs of the links you want to disavow in a simple text file, putting one URL on each line. If you need to add notes for your own reference, start the line with a “#,” and Google will ignore it.
  • Submit Your List:  Go to the Google Search Console, select your site, find the disavow links tool, and upload your text file. Google will start to ignore these links when assessing your website.

What Happens After Disavowing Links?

After you submit your list of toxic backlinks to Google's disavow tool, it's important to understand that changes won't happen overnight. Google needs some time to process your request and start ignoring these harmful links when evaluating your site. This means you probably won't see any immediate improvements in your search rankings.

However, over the following months, as Google updates its data and reassesses your site without the bad links, you should begin to notice positive changes. Your  site's SEO health may improve, potentially leading to better rankings.

Wrapping Up

Keeping an eye on your backlink profile and refining it regularly is essential for maintaining your website's health and search engine ranking. By identifying and disavowing toxic backlinks, you’re taking significant steps to protect your site and improve its credibility and ranking in search results. While building links is important, ensuring they are high-quality is essential for your long-term success.

This is the second piece in a series on the Future of Australian media. You can read the first piece in the series here .

Australians who are unaware of stories about social disorder and crime gripping Alice Springs must surely have been hiding under a rock as big as Uluru.

The town has been the focus of national media attention and (at times toxic) social media commentary , prompting many in Alice Springs to crave the return of an “old-fashioned” communications asset to help quell negativity – a local newspaper.

In 2023, the Mparntwe Alice Springs Community Foundation was established with a key mission of bringing back a local masthead after News Corp closed its long-running newspaper, the Centralian Advocate, in 2020 . To the foundation, a newspaper was a way of helping to re-establishing a sense of community connection and have constructive conversations on issues that matter to people in town.

The new Centralian Today celebrated its one-year anniversary this week in Alice Springs. Our research into this venture – to be launched this month – suggests that despite issues with recruitment and resourcing, the venture has been met with optimism from advertisers and audiences. It also provides a novel way of thinking about the future of news sustainability.

The Alice Springs example emphasises what academic literature has reinforced for decades – local news matters to audiences. When done well, local news providers play a role in keeping people safe and upholding social order (think natural disasters), hold power to account and foster public conversation. They also contribute to wellbeing, social connection and sense of “community”. Local newspapers in Australia are also expected to be non-partisan, but advocate and champion the shared interests of the geographic communities they serve.

Local papers in crisis

Yet, across the board, Australia’s local news sector is in crisis, as the traditional business model sustaining journalism – advertising – continues to shift towards digital platforms. Dozens of local news outlets (newspapers particularly) closed up shop across Australia during the lockdowns of COVID-19, in part due to a sudden loss of advertising.

This created what has been termed news “deserts” – geographic areas that have no local news provisions. This week Australian Community Media (ACM) – which publishes almost 70 daily and non-daily mastheads across metropolitan and rural Australia, continued its wave of cuts and newspaper sell-offs by announcing it will shed 35 editorial jobs and close a suite of country newspaper titles from the Tenterfield Star to the Dungog Leader. The Public Interest Journalism Initiative notes there are 31 local government areas in Australia without a local publisher, from Broken Hill in New South Wales to Upper Gasgoyne in Western Australia.

There have been attempts to support local news with federal government subsidies and initiatives totalling more than $70 million since 2018. While helpful, these have been short-term, and have not provided the solutions needed to address systemic challenges. The future of the mandatory bargaining code, which has forced Google and Facebook to pay publishers for news content that appeared on their platforms, is on a precipice. Meta, owner of Facebook, has announced it will not renew its news deal when it expires this year.

Targeted interventions and support for local news has been challenging because it is difficult to accurately gauge how much of Australia is in a news black hole. News coverage can be highly uneven, with some areas relatively well served when it comes to news access, especially in Victoria.

We have witnessed the rise of zombie newspapers, which carry mostly syndicated content and “ pink slime ” publications. These are fake, partisan publications masquerading as local news outlets that push a particular party line, misinformation or conspiracy theories.

In a sign of hope, new start-ups have emerged to fill voids, but they have qualified for only minimal government support. In addition, major media companies claim to serve particular local areas as part of their licence areas or circulation reach. But in reality they may only offer only tokenistic coverage to meet content quotas, attract subsidies or demonstrate “reach” to major advertisers.

Local media need targeted support

This makes it vital that support for the sector is directly targeted at areas that need it most, and are more than short term. Solutions that offer promise include:

tax cuts or support for journalistic salaries, especially recruitment of experienced journalists to the regions

a tech levy to distribute funds towards supporting local and community journalism

support for printed newspapers especially in areas with poor broadband coverage

engaging philanthropic support to specifically support journalism practice

responsible advertising spend – from government, not-for-profit and big business – to support local news outlets that invest in public interest journalism.

A new Australian Research Council Linkage project, for example, led by Deakin University in partnership with Griffith University and the ABC, is examining how local news producers can work together with the ABC to support vulnerable areas of the news ecology. This would form Australia’s version of the BBC’s successful Local Democracy Reporting Service .

News companies themselves must also carry some of the responsibility. For the current crisis, ACM’s announcement that the Tenterfield Star would close and reporters would now do their best to “cover the regions from a distance” should be scrutinised. It is important to note that the Tenterfield Star’s existing editorial office is 200km away from the town in Armidale. A newspaper that once lobbied for Federation in its heyday has minimal journalistic presence on the ground in Tenterfield (according to our research), with a photographer to capture events and happenings. The death knell had arguably been sounding for The Star long before ACM’s announcement this week.

In the debate about how to save local news, we have previously suggested that too much emphasis has been placed on generating social media metrics and reach, and predicting the impending doom of radio and print, at the expense of investing in and supporting relevant and reliable local content.

Most importantly, we suggest Facebook is no friend of public interest journalism in Australia. News outlets’ continued dependency on these platforms to build community and conversation is at their own peril.

This paper explores the intersection of climate change policies with banking supervisory law. Statutory mandates define banking supervisory agencies’ objectives, functions and powers. Policies that aim to address climate change risks appear fully germane to banking supervisors’ main objective of safety and soundness. As such, banking supervisory agencies have a duty to address climate risks in light of their mandate. A mandate that is not anchored on safety and soundness in light of best practice would blur the accountability of banking supervisory agencies and undermine their legitimacy also with respect to climate. While legal changes can help provide greater legal certaintly, particularly given the long-term perspective of climate change, bank supervisory agencies can take action without fundamental reforms of their legal framework. Accordingly, they have set expectations or requirements for banks to incorporate climate into their strategy and business model, risk management, and governance. A combination of legal instruments—based on soft law and hard law—helps to achieve this objective. Notwithstanding implementation challenges, taxonomies and disclosures remain important tools, and banking supervisors should assess their role in the development of such tools in light of their mandate. The key responsibility to address climate risks rests on banks, and corporate governance frameworks could assist.
