Five years after he smashed his head into a bathroom mirror and laughed maniacally, Mr. C has established a life for himself out in the sticks of Appalachia as a moonshine bootlegger—a tradition passed down into his adopted family. It was here that sharpened Mr. C’s killing abilities and the only sensible reason he drives at night and jams out to a chopped and screwed version of “American Woman” some 21 years later. He knows his American jazz roots, dammit!  Attempting to steal away Randy Quaid’s southern belle girlfriend and save his adopted family’s moonshining legacy, he drives and drives until he beats everyone with his amazing skillz. Needs more Annie. Needs more lumberjacks. Needs more coffee and donuts. But a great digression in the “mythos”. You know what I’m talking about!

F-This-Movie's Junesploitation 2024: Corman's Revenge! Day 5: Nineties Action! ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Kyle MacLachlan as a southern backwoods moonshine runner playing nemesis to Randy Quaid as a corrupt, grudge-holding southern sheriff. Quaid expects the bootleggers and 'shiners to ante up to his retirement fund if he's to look the other way on their runs but good ol' boy hot-shot driver Kyle believes he don't need anybody lookin' the other way...the way he drives?!? Kyle is also and not so secretly banging Quaid's ex-wife which irks the controlling, authoritarian prick to no end. This is all happening while the Federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents are in town looking to nail somebody for something... could be moonshiners, could be corrupt sheriffs.

Sounds like…

This is a great movie if you are looking for a good 50's era flick. There are plenty of great car chase scenes (Mercs, Fords, Chevys and an awesome Lincoln) and a few good songs to really set the tone. An all around good movie. MacLachlan and Quaid at arguably their peak. I’ve got a bunch of hillbilly relatives and I can relate to all these moonshine flicks.

I had a really good time with this movie! I'm not sure what others were expecting. I mean it definitely has some issues; the accents are a bit cheesy at times, and the story is rather predictable and "safe", but I thought it was a fun ride 👍 I'm even giving it an extra half star just because I feel bad for all the low ratings.

Cronenberg makes a quick appearance, I almost thought it was Ted Raimi 😆

One minor thing to point out, the plot description says there is an affair with the sheriff's wife, that's not exactly what's going on here... She's already left him and he refuses to sign the divorce papers. My opinion, that's not really having an affair if she's seeing someone else.

Review by Nick Dets ★★★

A Tennessee moonshine western complete with Hot Rod Lincolns, shotguns, a crooked sheriff on the take, and a pair of feds trying to dismantle the operation. I liked the “end of an era” backdrop; the romanticizing of a way of criminal life on its last legs. I liked Kyle Maclachlan’s jaded, aging driver, and especially Randy Quaid’s cruel, bitterly repressed heavy. It’s a low budget made-for-cable joint so the action isn’t anything terribly exciting, but the writing has genuine charm and the direction is solid. It’s an enjoyable serving of low-stakes genre comfort food. (2.5/4)

Decent enough, maybe not especially great made for Showtime drama set in the early 50s era South with Kyle MacLachlan as a fast driver who runs moonshine all over the state (i wanna say its set in Tennessee but i'm not entirely sure) His days of running moonshine are almost at an end, as liquor is more than legal everywhere and backwoods stuff is making less and less cash for them folks that live up in the hills. There's speculation that he could use his racing skills for stockcar racing which is starting to become a thing, but he kinda wants to hold tight to his living as he knows it.

He's having an affair with the sheriff's ex wife…

the pacing was pretty slow at times, but any time kyle maclachlan with a southern drawl in a 1950's button up shirt (or white tank top) was on screen it made it all worth it

this is the second film from 1996 to feature car crashes and related to david cronenberg LMFAO

I feel like if Lynch had written and directed this, my pussy would have EXPLODED fr, but yk altogether a decent flick, I've certainly scrounged up worse when I'm on one of my "Must watch current actor obsession's entire filmography" also the two seconds Cronenberg is on screen are more than worth it. These bitches really said "Yeah take this Canadian Jewish king of body horror, make him do a southern accent, and then blow him up in a car" and I couldn't agree more

Tennessee moonshiners back in '57 are burning up the backwoods road and running hooch to dry counties, and writer-director Andy Armstrong makes hay out of the sunshine. Tennessee moonshiners back in ’57 are burning up the backwoods road and running hooch to dry counties, and writer-director Andy Armstrong makes hay out of the sunshine. Kyle MacLachlan looks too natty, but manages well as the slickest, fastest hillbilly smuggler around, while expert stunt coordinator Armstrong, in his directorial bow, gives his own script a run for the money. The driving work alone should hold adventure seekers; it’s a major plus for the shrewd telefilm.

Muldoon (MacLachlan) is sweet on Ethyl Miller (an impressive Maria Del Mar), the waitress at the local saloon and the wife of redneck Sheriff Miller (Randy Quaid).

Related Stories

Reality tv survived the ’07 writers strike. why is it hurting in 2024, snapchat's quest for olympic gold counts on creators.

Mechanic Hooch (Gary Farmer) wants his buddy Muldoon to get out of the dangerous and fading bootlegging biz and get into stock-car racing. Muldoon sees the racing as driving in circles, preferring to roar down moonlit country roads delivering corn-liquor from the stills.

Popular on Variety

Trouble is federal revenuers led by sly city boy Rickman (Alex Carter) are closing in. It intros more expert stunt driving down that moonlit ribbon as director Armstrong exhibits his forte:stunt driving coordination in which the wildest traffic still remains clearly defined.

Armstrong has built strong principal characters, and the secondary folks fit in just fine. Muldoon’s bootlegging Pappy (Les Carlson) sees the bleak future; Rose (Lori Hallier) and Lorna (Eleanor Lind), Ethyl’s friends waitressing at the saloon, add to the texture, and the interactions tie up neatly.

MacLachlan acts low key without a hint of underlying fire, but it suits the overall vidpic. Del Mar’s a decided prize, and Quaid adds his commendable force. Carter’s Rickman weighs in well, Jeremy Ratchford brings a hard edge to his role as a former smuggler who’s become the circuit’s top driver.

Toronto locales under production designer Ed Hanna’s sharp eye are choice; Dick Quinlan’s lensing is generally well composed, and Pat McMahon’s editing is exacting.

But it’s all Armstrong’s show, and if there are slow areas in the beginning as characters slip into focus, he makes up for it with eye-filling action and startling reactions.

Scarcely perfect, “Moonlight Highway”‘ does go somewhere: It boasts a lusty story, it intros involving folks, and it has an ending.

last 13 min of this movie with nice car chase

What about the yellow 53 Buick convertible the woman drove, and the light green 57 Chevy 4dr, used by the feds? (and 2 black 57 Chevy police cars used for a road block that got hit) There was also a 49 Mercury coupe that got blown up, and a black & white 56 Ford Club Sedan shown briefly in one scene. There was a dark green 49 or 50 Chevy coupe that got chased, too. The 5 cars listed here are only about half of what was in the movie.

so sue me, if very briefly visible and no proper shot I don't bother unlike others who post ultra obscure crap like this

This site is about cars. If you miss a crane that's fine, but when you deliberately miss a car that was carefully placed there and obviously filmed for a reason I think it's safe to say that you cut corners.

2022-12-13 20:52

it's there just a single second and you don't even see what bodytype , so not a big loss

if it really had any importance director/ editors would have given it some real shots and time

This is partly why movies like these should be left to contributors who have a genuine interest for classic cars, in my opinion.

nobody is stopping you from going thru the whole movie yourself

Of course, the good old "you want it done right, do it yourself" end argument of yours. Just don't say next time like it's a fact.

My problem? Maybe it's about your double standards surrounding "slopy capers", or maybe just your unpleasantness in general. I remember telling myself to ignore you completely after you managed to get yourself unbanned. So maybe that's what I'll do from now on.

2022-12-14 11:43

what double standards ? I complain when you cappers don't add thumbnails when available not that they don't post ultra obscure entries
