As part of our series  How to Fully Fund Your PhD , here is a list of US universities offering fully funded PhD programs in Data Science. Data Science entails a combination of statistical analysis and data mining where researchers analyze data and build models using program languages such as R, Python, and SQL. Unlike computer science , which focuses on software engineering, data science aims to understand the data itself, uncover patterns, and use it to predict outcomes . A Data Science PhD opens opportunities for those aiming to advance their careers in academia, industry, research, and even create a startup initiative of their own.

“Full funding” is a financial aid package for full-time students that includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary during the entire program, usually 3-6 years. To receive this funding, students will typically teach or complete a research project in their chosen subject. Considering fully funded programs is essential because not all universities grant funding to their doctoral students. By including smaller and lesser-known schools in your research, you optimize your chances of finding the perfect fully funded program for you.

What Are PhD in Data Analytics Programs?

A PhD in Data Analytics or a closely related field is an interdisciplinary doctorate that focuses on cutting-edge research in the realms of advanced analytics, statistical computing, big data, and data science. Doctoral students in analytics:

  • Push the boundaries of analytics in order to solve complex societal & organizational problems and transform decision-making
  • Train to be expert practitioners in big data technologies, newly developed statistical methods, and “out of the box” analytical thinking
  • Become analytics & data science professors at universities, senior analytics consultants in industry, and government advisors

Can You Earn a PhD in Data Analytics?

Yes. Doctoral programs in data analytics are available, but they are rare. The most popular title for a degree in the realm of data is the PhD in Data Science . Data science is a highly inventive field that builds on analytical foundations, so it makes sense to consider a doctoral program that focuses on innovation & self-guided discoveries.

When you do find a PhD with the word “analytics” in the title , you’re still going to be looking at a doctorate that intersects with the field of data science. Massive data sets, complicated analytics processes, sophisticated predictive models—doctoral students in analytics are schooled in all of these areas (and more).

Note: PhD programs are focused on original research and high-level thinking. If you want a workplace qualification, consider a Master’s in Data Analytics .

Types of Data Analytics Doctorate Programs

We’ve listed some common titles for doctorates in analytics, but we recommend you check the curriculum links in our listings and learn which department/s are offering the program. You should also look up the faculty’s research interests to see if they align with your own ideas for PhD projects. For example:

  • If the degree is offered by the Department of Computer Science, a PhD in Data Analytics might be heavy on research into ethics, bias, AI, and building intelligent systems.
  • If the degree is offered in partnership with the School of Business, a PhD in Data Analytics could be preoccupied with Machine Learning (ML), risk analysis, and econometrics.

The title of the PhD plays second fiddle to the department.

PhD in Analytics

A PhD in Analytics can often cut across multiple data-driven domains. Think of fields like Business Analytics, Data Science, Operations Research, and more. For instance, at the University of Notre Dame , doctoral students in analytics are able to access a large number of analytics research labs (e.g. gaming, human behavior, data & society, business, etc.) and collaborate with all kinds of partners.

PhD in Big Data Analytics

Doctorates in Big Data Analytics tend to focus on advanced systems & technologies that deal with processing big data (e.g. statistical computing, data mining, etc.), as well as their applications to real-world problems. Some universities, like the University of South Florida , are also interested in examining the human & social implications of analytics (e.g. ethical usage).

PhD in Analytics & Data Science

A PhD in Analytics and Data Science or a PhD in Data Science, Analytics & Engineering is a way for universities to combine data expertise from multiple departments. Yes, advanced analytics & big data processes will be addressed in the curriculum. But you’ll also find a strong emphasis on programming, algorithm creation, and systems development.

PhD in Data Science

Doctoral programs in data science may have more of a “design & develop” feel than analytics doctorates. In addition to exploring advanced analytics & big data applications, PhD in Data Science students are often interested in designing new information systems & tools (e.g. dashboards), creating their own algorithms & models, and exploring the boundaries of AI & Machine Learning (ML).

Note: Interested in industry & corporate analytics applications? Check out the guide to the PhD in Business Analytics .

How Doctorates in Data Analytics Work: Curriculum & Dissertation

Degree structure.

PhD programs in data analytics contain 6 key elements that take 4-5 years to complete on a full-time schedule. You will have to tackle each stage (e.g. core coursework) before you can proceed to the next one (e.g. qualifying exam).

Core Coursework

Qualifying/comprehensive exam, dissertation proposal, dissertation, dissertation defense.

  • Year 1: Core coursework and first-year research papers. Assignment of a faculty mentor.
  • Year 2: Core coursework, electives, second-year research papers, and the qualifying exam.
  • Year 3: Any remaining coursework. Preparing research projects for publication. Dissertation proposal.
  • Year 4: Dissertation work under the guidance of a dissertation advisor and advisory committee.
  • Year 5: Dissertation work. Research papers & conference submissions. Dissertation defense.

Sample Curriculum

A PhD in Data Analytics or a closely related field will always contain a set of courses in advanced analytics & data science subjects. These courses can come from multiple departments (e.g. Computer Science, Mathematics & Statistics, Industrial Engineering, Psychology, etc.). Examples include:

  • Big Data Analytics
  • Data Mining
  • Theoretical Statistics
  • Statistical Computing
  • Machine Learning
  • Database Systems
  • Information Assurance & Security

These are just a few sample course titles! Use the curriculum links in our listings to get a feel for each program’s unique flavor.

Once you’ve tackled the fundamentals of core coursework , you’ll usually be able to choose high-level electives in your particular research interests. For instance, the University of Central Florida offers electives in:

  • Advanced computing (e.g. Parallel & Cloud Computation)
  • Sophisticated analytics applications (e.g. Interactive Data Visualization)
  • Industries (e.g. Industrial Engineering Analytics for Healthcare)

With some programs, you can customize your doctorate to a remarkable extent.

A qualifying exam is designed to test your knowledge of core coursework . It might take the form of a traditional exam, a paper and/or a project. For example, at the University of South Florida , PhD students are required to report on the results of a real-world, big data analytics project and include codes & systems that were developed in the process.

You’ll be required to develop an original idea for a research- or project-based dissertation and present your dissertation proposal to a dissertation advisory committee—experienced faculty members and (occasionally) outside experts who are interested in your area of work.

  • A research-based dissertation will explore new realms of analytics research and potential applications.
  • A project-based dissertation will involve work on a real-life project—this may be created at a research center or be suggested by an industry partner.

The dissertation proposal often takes the form of a written outline and an oral defense/presentation. If the committee accepts your proposal, you can get to work on your dissertation.

A PhD dissertation is a piece of original research that makes a significant contribution to the theory & practice of a field. In the world of data analytics & data science, dissertations can be research-based or project-based.

Dissertation Titles

Examples of real-life PhD in Data Analytics & Data Science dissertation titles include:

  • A Credit Analysis of the Unbanked and Underbanked: An Argument for Alternative Data
  • Novel Statistical and Machine Learning Methods for the Forecasting and Analysis of Major League Baseball Player Performance
  • Optimal Analytical Methods for High Accuracy Cardiac Disease Classification and Treatment Based on ECG Data
  • The Intelligent Management of Crowd-Powered Machine Learning
  • Forecasting the Prices of Cryptocurrencies using a Novel Parameter Optimization of VARIMA Models
  • Classification with Large Sparse Datasets: Convergence Analysis and Scalable Algorithms

While you are writing up your dissertation, many universities will also expect you to be submitting related research papers to peer-reviewed journals & industry conferences.

The final step in the PhD process is the dissertation defense. You’ll be required to present your dissertation findings to your dissertation advisory committee and defend your research ideas in an oral & visual presentation. This will be followed by questions and a discussion.

It’s not as intimidating as it sounds. By this stage in your education, you will know your research inside-out and will have brainstormed many of the potential questions with your dissertation advisor. You can prepare for a defense by observing other student defenses, practicing with mock presentations, and reading up on the work of committee members.

PhD in Data Analytics: Admissions

Doctorate in data analytics: what it takes to get in.

Every PhD program in data analytics is going to have a unique set of admissions requirements! When you’re putting together a shortlist of doctorates, use the admissions links in our listings to save yourself time & trouble. You can decide if the program suits your level of expertise and education.

Doctoral programs in tech-driven disciplines—especially ones that are fully funded —are extremely competitive. You can stand out from the crowd by:

  • Examining your entire application to see if you can make up for weaknesses (e.g. lower grades) with strengths (e.g. real-world projects)
  • Matching your research interests to the university, department & research labs offering the program
  • Collaborating with experienced analytics practitioners to co-author papers & publications
  • Attending industry events and making connections that will help in your research
  • Earning professional certificates to fill in any skills gaps

Degree Requirements

Your degree should be in a discipline that’s relevant to your area of research interest in the PhD. For a data analytics doctorate, that might mean a degree in statistics, data analytics, computer science, economics, or similar. The standard GPA requirement is 3.0 GPA or higher.

  • Bachelor’s Degree Entry: Some doctoral programs in data analytics & data science are willing to consider applicants with a bachelor’s degree.
  • Master’s Degree Entry:  Some doctoral programs are only looking for candidates with a master’s degree.

If you’re an undergraduate and you like the look of a PhD that only accepts master’s candidates, ask the program coordinator if you can earn an MS through the same university. Most doctoral programs have a “Master’s Along the Way” option.

Skills & Proficiencies

PhD candidates in analytics must be ready to tackle advanced coursework and high-level research. So universities will usually want to see evidence of proficiency/course credits in:

  • Statistics, calculus & linear algebra
  • Common analytical programming languages (e.g. R, Python, SAS, etc.)
  • Analytics fundamentals (e.g. database management systems)

If you don’t have an undergraduate or master’s degree in analytics or a closely related field, universities will be poring over your transcripts & résumé to make sure you can handle any technical coursework.

General Requirements

In addition to your degree transcripts, almost all PhD programs in data analytics & data science fields will want to see:

  • GRE or GMAT scores
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • TOEFL scores for non-English speaking international applicants

PhD in Data Analytics: Tuition & Funding

How to fund the phd.

Doctoral programs in data analytics & data science fall into 2 broad categories:

  • Fully funded PhD programs
  • Tuition-driven PhD programs

As you might expect, fully funded doctorate programs at strong universities are hard to get into!

Fully Funded PhD Programs

A number of STEM doctorates at research universities are fully funded. The university will waive all tuition costs and provide you with a living stipend as compensation for teaching & research activities. Many PhD students work as Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Research Assistant (RAs) during their doctoral studies.

Talk to the PhD program coordinator and check the fine print when you’re considering these programs.

  • You may (or may not) qualify for on-campus housing and university health insurance.
  • You may (or may not) qualify for conference stipends, overseas internships, and other perks.
  • You may (or may not) be expected to pay for miscellaneous university fees.
  • You may receive funding for Years 1-4 of your degree, but Year 5 support could be conditional on strong academic performance.

Tuition-Driven PhD Programs

You’ll also find doctoral programs in analytics & data science that do not offer any funding. They’ll expect you to pay for the degree out of your own pocket. At a private university, a PhD could cost upwards of $60,000-$80,000 in tuition alone.

So tread carefully! If you don’t qualify for fully funded PhD programs and you believe that a doctorate is  essential for your career goals, consider applying to a PhD program at a public university in your state—UCF’s in-state tuition for a PhD in Big Data Analytics is very reasonable.

You will also need to look into postgraduate loans, private scholarships & fellowships, employer reimbursement, and teaching & research job opportunities to offset your costs.

Online PhD in Data Analytics Programs

Can you earn an online phd in data analytics.

Yes—but we would caution against them. There are a few universities that offer online doctorates in data analytics, but they tend to be for-profit (e.g. Colorado Tech) or focused on executive-level training instead of research (e.g. DBA in Data Analytics from the University of the Southwest).

You’ll have a little more luck in finding online doctorates in data science, but they still won’t be offered by top-tier universities.

Why Are Online PhD Programs in Analytics Hard to Find?

Prestigious research universities & high-ranking schools are very cautious about maintaining their reputation for quality. They want doctoral students in data analytics & data science to:

  • Attend classes in advanced topics, ask questions, and follow-up with faculty
  • Have unfettered access to the university’s research centers, labs, and technical facilities
  • Be able to teach undergraduates and conduct research in-person
  • Meet with their dissertation advisor on a regular basis
  • Network with visiting experts and fellow students

We agree with them. At this level, we highly recommend you choose an on-campus doctoral degree.

Career Prospects for PhD in Data Analytics Graduates

A PhD in Data Analytics or a closely related field is a super-specialized degree. You don’t need a doctorate to pursue a career in analytics & data science. Many senior-level practitioners simply have a degree like a Master’s in Data Analytics (or a similar title) and a lot of on-the-job experience.

However, a doctorate in analytics is an excellent choice for aspiring:

  • University Professors: If you wish to teach analytics & data science at a college or university, you will probably need a research-focused doctorate. At the University of Notre Dame, 80% of its PhD in Analytics graduates go into academia.

PhD Data Analytics FAQs

What should i look for in a data analytics doctoral program.

When you’re starting to put together a shortlist of doctoral programs, consider the following aspects:

  • Funding Options: The best choice is going to be a fully funded PhD from a highly ranked & highly regarded university that includes teaching & research assistantships.
  • Departmental Reputation: Which schools & departments are offering the degree? What kinds of unique benefits do they offer students? How much research funding do they receive?
  • Faculty Expertise: Faculty profiles will be posted on the PhD program website. Read their bios, meet them for a virtual coffee, and learn more about their research & industry work. These people will become your advisors & mentors.
  • Access to Resources: Will you have access to top-of-the-line analytics tools, commercial resources, and large-scale infrastructures? Can you work on projects within a major analytics research lab or center?
  • Career Preparation: A strong PhD program will prepare you for the job market after graduation. Does the curriculum include opportunities for you to submit research papers to peer-reviewed journals? Does it offer stipends for conference travel? Does it bring in visiting experts for seminars?

What is a STEM Doctorate?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. A STEM doctorate is any PhD—including the PhD in Data Analytics and the PhD in Data Science—that contains at least 50% of coursework in these fields.

  • Are you an international student? Ask if the doctoral program has a “STEM designation” from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Students on an F-1 Visa can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) /temporary employment after graduation. Having a STEM-designated degree extends the OPT period from 12 months to 36 months.
  • STEM programs often receive a fair amount of funding from the government and private industries. That means universities may be able to offer fully funded PhD programs to multiple students.

Is a PhD in Data Analytics Worth It?

Only if you have a specific career goal in mind. A PhD in Data Analytics or a closely related field is going to be time-consuming, challenging, and heavy on research. At least 4-5 years of your life will be devoted to earning it, so you and your family need to be prepared for the journey.

Unsure about your decision? Talk to analytics professionals who have already gone through the PhD gauntlet. You’ll find doctoral graduates on LinkedIn, at industry conferences , and within faculty directories on university websites. Be prepared to talk to them about your research interests and your goals.

How To Find the Right Online Ph.D. in Data Science for You

Consider your future goals.

A Ph.D. in data science makes sense if you want to become a college professor , conduct original research or compete for the highest-paying and most cognitively demanding business analytics and machine learning positions. If you plan to pursue other careers, you may not need a terminal degree in this field.

If you want to work in academia, make sure your chosen doctorate in data science includes a dissertation requirement. A dissertation allows you to perform original research and contribute to scholarship in your field before you graduate. In turn, you’ll get a sense of your chosen career and a head start on professional publication.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Per-credit tuition rates for the programs in our guide ranged from $442 to $950. A 60-credit degree from NU totals about $26,500, while the 66-credit option at Capitol Tech costs more than $62,000.

Private universities, including NU and Capitol Tech, tend to cost more than public schools. Graduate students at nonprofit private universities paid an average of $20,408 per year in 2022-23, according to the National Center for Education Statistics . Over the course of a typical three-year Ph.D. program, this translates to about $61,000. This roughly matches Capitol Tech’s tuition, while NU offers a more affordable program.

While a Ph.D. might help you land a lucrative role in the long run, the upfront investment is still significant. Make sure to fill out the FAFSA ® to access federal student aid. This application is the gateway to opportunities like scholarships, grants and loans. You can pursue similar opportunities through schools and nonprofit organizations.

As a doctoral student, you may be able to access graduate assistantships or stipends, but these are often reserved for on-campus students who teach undergraduates or assist professors with research.

Should You Enroll in a Ph.D. in Data Science Online?

Pursuing a Ph.D. in data science online suits a specific kind of learner. To decide if that’s you, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What’s my budget? In some cases, public universities allow students who exclusively enroll in online courses to pay in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates. Even if you have to pay full price, distance learners generally save on costs associated with housing and transportation.
  • What are my other commitments? Distance learning is often a good fit for parents and students who need to work full time while pursuing their degree. Learners with outside responsibilities might pursue a program with asynchronous course delivery, which eliminates scheduled class sessions.
  • What’s my learning style? Distance learning requires a great deal of discipline, organization and time management. If you need external accountability or prefer the structure of a peer group or physical classroom, on-campus learning might offer a better fit.

Accreditation for Online Ph.D.s in Data Science

There are two important types of college accreditation to consider: institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is essential; it involves vetting schools to ensure the quality of their finances, academics, and faculty, among other areas. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and U.S. Department of Education oversee the regional agencies that administer this process.

You should only enroll at institutionally accredited schools. Otherwise, you will be ineligible for federal financial aid. You can check a school’s accreditation status on its website or by visiting the directory on CHEA’s website .

Individual departments and degrees earn programmatic accreditation based on their curriculum, faculty and learner outcomes. However, this process has not been widely established for data science programs, so it shouldn’t make or break your enrollment decision. However, you can still keep an eye out for accreditation from the Data Science Council of America (DASCA).

Our Methodology

We ranked two accredited, nonprofit colleges offering online Ph.D.s in data science in the U.S. using 15 data points in the categories of student experience, credibility, student outcomes and affordability. We pulled data for these categories from reliable resources such as the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System ; private, third-party data sources; and individual school and program websites.

Data is accurate as of February 2024. Note that because online doctorates are relatively uncommon, fewer schools meet our ranking standards at the doctoral level.

We scored schools based on the following metrics:

Student Experience:

  • Student-to-faculty ratio
  • Socioeconomic diversity
  • Availability of online coursework
  • Total number of graduate assistants
  • Proportion of graduate students enrolled in at least some distance education

Credibility:

  • Fully accredited
  • Programmatic accreditation status
  • Nonprofit status

Student Outcomes:

  • Overall graduation rate
  • Median earnings 10 years after graduation

Affordability:

  • In-state graduate student tuition
  • In-state graduate student fees
  • Alternative tuition plans offered
  • Median federal student loan debt

Top Data Science Scholarships for Students

Across the blogosphere and in educators’ marketing copy, you’ll see some truly astonishing estimates of the job outlook for data scientists. These aren’t just hot air: according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics , data scientists already earn average annual salaries of around $100,000 in the US, well above the typical American’s wages of just $44,000. What’s more, these high-paying positions are only multiplying: the BLS estimates 36% job growth in the field over the next decade, over 7x labor growth in the US as a whole.

While the data science job market offers an increasing number of opportunities to earn a lucrative salary, for many, financing the education needed to break into the field still presents an almost insurmountable hurdle, more difficult even than coding a deep learning model to extract insights from big data sets. After all, often omitted from marketers’ sunny characterizations of the job outlook for data scientists are the eye-popping start-up costs: the average data science bootcamp in the US cost $11,727 in 2020, while the average bachelor’s and master’s degree will run students $218,004 and $61,200 , respectively. Factor in student loans and frequently exorbitant interest rates; the actual cost is often far higher.

The cost of data science education has two undesirable upshots. First, these high costs, even after financial aid, can hinder access for individuals already traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields, especially women, minorities, veterans, and first-generation college students, which robs the field of data science of crucial brainpower. Second, a data scientist seeking to quickly realize a return on their investment and pay off loans tends to gravitate to high-paying industries like big tech, leaving talent gaps for lower-paying, but no less essential areas of the public and social sectors that can leverage big data to drive growth.

To combat these, nonprofits, corporations, and governments are increasingly offering various scholarships and fellowships to defray the cost of education for those interested in data science and other STEM fields. It’s free money, and you’d be foolish not to try to tap in. Below, you’ll find a curated, up-to-date list of great opportunities to make your data science journey easier — financially, at least — plus information on how to apply to each.

How to make your application stand out?

To give yourself the best chance of success when applying for data science scholarships, make sure to do the following:

Stay organized: Identify the scholarships you’re eligible for, then input relevant information like deadlines and application materials into a spreadsheet to stay on top of things. As you assemble your application, double- and triple-check the requirements to ensure nothing is missing. Often, organizations offering scholarships won’t allow you to fix any errors or submit any missing materials after the deadline.

Ask for recommendations early: There’s no easier way to hurt a potential recommender’s opinion of you than asking for a recommendation too late. Make sure to give those mentors nice enough to write a letter to support your application ample time to paint the best possible picture of your achievements and character.

Tell your story: There are always many qualified applicants for a scholarship — so why do you deserve it? Make sure your story shines through when writing a personal statement, preparing for an interview, or even putting together your resume. What brought you into data science, and what do you bring? How will the scholarship help not only you but your community? Check out our resume, interview, and cover letter guides for tips and tricks.

Get busy: It would be great to apply to one scholarship and get it, but it’s a good idea to apply to a bunch. This means more work for you, but also better chances that this work will be rewarded.

What’s next?

Above, we’ve laid out some great scholarship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students alike and discussed best practices for applying. Of course, with so much competition in data science, getting the most lucrative scholarships can be anything but easy. If you’re interested in a data science bachelor’s or master’s degree, this can mean that you’ll need to self-fund or take out loans for your education. To read more about the financial calculus behind pursuing a data science master’s degree, check out our investigation into what makes the degree worth it .

If you are a college student, either a current undergraduate student a master’s student, or even an early-career professional interested in pursuing a doctorate, you may have more options. While we’ve previewed some selective doctoral fellowships offered by corporations and government agencies above, the truth is that many US doctoral programs in data science, computer science, and applied mathematics are fully funded, meaning that students receive tuition remissions and a modest living stipend. If you’re interested in going this route, check with each department you’re looking into to see if they offer funding packages.

Your Guide to Data Science Scholarships for 2018

How to qualify for a data science scholarship, your best bets for finding a data science scholarship, directory of scholarships available at the national and state level.

Unlike some other specialties in information technology, you really can’t just jump in and learn data science on the basis of your analytical talent and hours of trial and error experimentation— it requires a formal education both to understand the complex concepts and to be trained in the tools of the trade. But even as recently as 2012, there wasn’t even a specific degree option for would-be data scientists. A background in math, statistics, or programming was the most common path to a career in the field.

But things have changed a lot since then, with universities scrambling to meet the demand for trained data scientists by bringing specialized programs online that include the combination of statistical analysis and modeling, math, programming and data mining courses that are the hallmark of a true data science program.

Since around 88% of data scientists hold master’s degrees, that means you’ve got an expensive couple of years ahead of you if you’re serious about this field. You’re going to be making a mint when you graduate, but you have to get through it first. And unless you want to be paying down loans for the first decade of your career, scholarships are one of the best ways to make sure that education is affordable.

Every college scholarship has criteria that applicants are going to be expected to meet. You can expect to come across criteria that will include everything from your location (either where you are from or where you will be going to school) and GPA to your gender and ethnicity.

But criteria can also be more subjective, including things like:

  • Written essays on the topic of data science
  • Participation in activities or clubs related to the profession
  • An agreement to commit to completing an internship or taking a job at a designated employer
  • Belonging to a particular organization or finding a sponsor from one

Those basic qualifications are only your first hurdle to clear, though. You won’t just be judged against a list of items on an application form, you’ll also be measured against other candidates looking for those same scholarships. Data science is a hot field and attracts some of the best and the brightest students. You’ll be up against their transcripts and backgrounds, too.

To prepare yourself for that kind of competition, you’ll need some extracurriculars to brag about. This just means being able to show that you have the dedication and perseverance to study outside the requirements of the classroom.

Scholarship awards committees want to know they are putting their money into a candidate who will follow through and contribute to the field after graduation.

Some scholarships, like the Strong Analytics Strong Data Science Scholarship , make the competition even more explicit. Strong’s submission process requires that you perform an analysis on a publicly available dataset and create a presentation on your findings that they will review and judge against those from other competitors.

Competitions of this sort are a great way to both demonstrate your dedication to the field and to help develop your skills, whether you win the award or not.

Since data science is such a new field, it doesn’t have as many dedicated, well-established scholarship funds as other engineering or technology specialties do. You will probably have to dig deeper and be more creative to find data science scholarships than if you were simply going into computer science.

On there other hand, your best bet for scholarship money might be to find scholarships that do not have anything to do with data science specifically. Instead, scholarships that cover computer science and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields are often applicable to data science programs.

For example, the Future Leaders of IT Scholarships provide $2,000 to recipients in any information technology-related field of study. These types of scholarships are far more widely available and easier to match with your particular criteria than dedicated data science scholarships.

Organizations Promoting Science Education

There are many organizations promoting science education today, both generally and for particular groups of students who are underrepresented in data science.

The Pride Foundation offers the Friends of Alan Turing Scholarship for LGBTQ students. The $1,500 award is offered in honor of one of the most celebrated mathematicians of our age, who was also persecuted to the point of suicide for being gay.

There are also non-traditional grant options available for students willing to accept certain post-graduation employment conditions. The Department of Defense SMART Scholarship for Service program is open to U.S. citizens who are willing to commit to work either within the military or with the Department of Defense for a certain period after getting their degree.

The program is also restricted to certain pre-approved universities and fields… however, computer science is one of those fields. In 2017, the program made almost 350 awards of up to $38,000. Those are much better odds than you will find at most dedicated data science scholarship programs.

Data-Focused Organizations

Businesses that make their money in data processing, like Oracle, or professional associations that are heavily affiliated with big data, like the Data Processing Management Association, are among those organizations that are likely to offer scholarships for data science students. These are generally offered through local or regional affiliates, such as this one for $1,000 through the Portland Chapter of the association , so it may take some digging to find one for which you are eligible.

Another variation on this theme are scholarships that were originally created to support students in the fields of math or statistics, but which also can be used for data science programs. One example of this is the Mary G. and Joseph Natrella Scholarship , which was established by the American Statistical Association in 2000 to support students conducting research in math and statistics. Although the original benefactors were intended to be statisticians focused on quality control and productivity work, those applications are now squarely within the province of data science.

These are sometimes narrowly focused on certain student groups that have been historically underrepresented in computer and data science. The Xerox Technical Minority Scholarship , for example, is open to qualified minority students earning a technical degree of bachelor’s level or above. The awards range from $1,000 to $10,000.

Sometimes, these scholarships originate from organizations you might not immediately expect to have a big interest in data science. ExxonMobil, however, offers the Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarship to eligible minority students. The scholarship awards four $5,000 grants each year, two each for males and females, with the recipients selected personally by Dr. Harris, a retired NASA astronaut.

Colleges and Universities

Data science has not yet gone through the lifecycle that results in wealthy, retired data scientists becoming the benefactors of the next generation through endowments, but some college are putting together scholarship funds aimed at data scientists anyway, such as the Western Nebraska Community College John P. Harris Striving for Excellence in Data Processing Scholarship, which is worth $1,200 to some Nebraskan student each year.

Larger universities trying to jump start their new data science programs might also offer scholarships to help bring students in. The New York University Center for Data Science offers tuition scholarships for a limited number of students in their data science master’s degree program, for instance.

Whether the particular school you select offers its own scholarship or not, every college will have a financial aid office and professional advisers who keep tabs on every available form of assistance. This is an invaluable resource for you both in identifying scholarships you might qualify for, and for making sure that your applications dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s required for success.

(A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. UVA Alum and His Wife Donate $10 Million to Data Science School

Scott and Beth Stephenson

University of Virginia President Jim Ryan on Thursday announced a $10 million commitment from Scott and Beth Stephenson to provide a scholarship program for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in data science, a newly established undergraduate major in the School of Data Science. The Stephensons are longtime supporters of the University and the school.

Their gift, creating the Stephenson Data Science Bicentennial Scholars Fund, will be matched with an additional $10 million from the University’s Bicentennial Scholars Fund for a total investment of $20 million.

“Beth and Scott have been deeply engaged with the School of Data Science since its founding, and I am incredibly grateful for their generous gift,” Ryan said. “With Stephenson Scholarships nurturing the future leaders in data science at the University, their thoughtful and well-timed investment will enable the University to lead the way in this rapidly developing field of study.”

In September 2023, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia approved the creation of a Bachelor of Science in Data Science at UVA, a landmark development for the 5-year-old school. The degree program was the first of its kind in the nation and includes 75 new data science undergraduate majors this year.

The scholarship program will fulfill 100% of each Stephenson Scholar’s demonstrated financial need by offsetting loan and/or work-study requirements. It will also allow students from all backgrounds to engage with the University’s and the school’s undergraduate experiences, including internships, research and other opportunities in the interdisciplinary field of data science — and to graduate debt-free.

“My sincere thanks to Beth and Scott Stephenson for this transformative gift to accompany what is a first – a groundbreaking Bachelor of Science in Data Science program,” Philip Bourne, the Stephenson Dean of the School of Data Science, said. “I cannot think of a better way forward, nor better advocates of data science, than the Stephensons. The financial support and mentoring of the Stephenson Scholars will bring forth qualities of leadership in quantitative skills as applied to the needs of society.”

Next fall, the school’s admissions team, in coordination with Student Financial Services, will select Stephenson Scholars from rising second-year students admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Data Science program.

A 1979 graduate of UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, Scott Stephenson has been involved with data science throughout his academic and professional careers. He is the founder of SGS Capital and former chair, president and CEO of Verisk Analytics. He has served on the School of Data Science board since 2015, when it was then the Data Science Institute. He and his wife supported the establishment of the Stephenson Dean of the School of Data Science with a $3 million gift in 2021.

Dean Phil Bourne speaks at orientation.

The concept for establishing the Scholars Program came naturally for the Stephensons.

“We have direct experience of the value of a technical education in the context of the overall breadth of the University, Scott having studied at the Engineering School as an undergraduate,” Beth Stephenson said. “In our family, we were fortunate that all three of our children emerged from their undergraduate studies debt-free, and we saw how this permitted them to accelerate into their chosen fields. We’re excited to support other young scholars down the same path.”

Scott Stephenson added that they were pleased to partner with the University and the school.

“We believe the School of Data Science, and therefore this Scholar’s Program, can and will be very strategic for the University,” he said. “We expect the undergraduate degree to be very popular with current and prospective scholars, and with time the success of the school will lead to deeper ties to relevant industries and areas of sponsored research.”

The Bicentennial Scholars Fund, initiated in 2017 around the bicentennial of the University’s founding, has been one of the most successful strategic initiatives of the Honor the Future campaign and is a key component of the University’s 2030 Plan. As of July, this combination of philanthropy and matching funds from the University has created more than $645 million for permanently endowed scholarships. Since the Bicentennial Scholars Fund was established, more than 643 endowed scholarships have been established across the University.
