CONSTRUCTION AND ANALYSIS OF A PELTON WHEEL TURBINE FOR SMALL-SCALE HYDROELECTRIC POWER GENERATION

AHMED, TUNDE EMEKA [REG. NUMBER]

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA

There is a need to develop mechanical systems applicable for converting the small hydro potentials that exist in Nigeria to small-scale hydroelectricity.

Inspired by the need for Nigeria to explore energy sources that are more environmentally friendly than fossil fuel, suitable for industrial applications, and yet economical, this project work is on constructing a Pelton turbine suitable for small-scale hydroelectricity generation.

The method of getting this work done involves studying and analyzing the design of already existing Pelton turbines and then constructing such a turbine from locally available materials.

Although the scope of this work doesn’t go beyond the construction of a Pelton turbine, a number of other systems that will help in demonstrating the end result will be incorporated into the work.

Introduction

Over the years, much effort has been put into developing alternative energy sources free from the negative consequences of fossil fuels. Hydroelectricity has remained among the top alternative to fossil fuels because of its numerous advantages.

In many countries, including China, India, and Brazil, attention has been paid not only to large-scale hydropower plants but also to small-scale hydroelectricity. But in Nigeria, it is not so. Small-scale hydro has not been given much attention in the country, and there is a need to have locally manufactured systems that will help the country utilize the hydro potentials that exist.

1.1 Background of Study

In 1866, Samuel Knight develops a bucketed wheel that captures the energy of a free jet, which converted a high head of water to kinetic energy. Knight’s invention was inspired by the high-pressure jet systems used in hydraulic mining in the gold fields.

Lester Allan Pelton in 1879 develops a double bucket design, exhausting the water to the side, eliminating some energy loss of the Knight wheel which exhausted some water back against the center of the wheel. This Pelton’s invention, today known as the Pelton wheel or Pelton turbine, marked the first time energy from the water was converted most efficiently.

Inspired by the invention of the earlier water wheels, the Pelton turbine is being used in engineering applications today, especially in hydroelectric systems where it is used to convert water energy into mechanical energy.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Fossil fuel has been associated with a lot more negative environmental implications than hydroelectricity and other energy renewable energy sources. The negative impacts of fossil fuel for power generation include the increase of greenhouse effect, health implications, global warming, climate change, acidic pollution, oil spills, rise in sea levels, and a shift in the ecological balance and land impacts.

Nigeria is a tropical region country that experiences a long rainy season every year. The rainfall water can be channelled to drive a turbine to produce small-scale electricity. There are also various streams and rivers in the country with small-scale hydro potential. But these sources have gotten little or no attention in the country. Therefore, the need arises to construct turbines that can be used to utilize the small-scale hydro potential in Nigeria to produce more economically and environmentally friendly energy.

1.3 Purpose of study

The aim of this project work is to construct a Pelton turbine suitable for small-scale hydroelectricity generation.

This aim will be achieved through the following objectives:

  • studying the design of already existing Pelton turbines
  • constructing a Pelton turbine using locally available materials

This work will not go into the complexity of modelling or constructing a complete hydroelectric power plant. Instead, this work will focus on constructing a Pelton turbine for small-scale hydro. Other necessary components that will be used to demonstrate the working of the turbine, examples are the water source, alternator, and other electrical components, which are not the mainstay of this work.

Chapter Two

Literature review, 2.1 review of pelton turbine design.

Several works have been done and several studies carried out on Pelton turbines, using both analytical and numerical methods. Most of the advanced studies focused on determining and predicting the performances of the machine. Others have studied the service life, and rupture threshold of the machine due to fatigue or corrosion. A number of past studies have tried to improve the design and construction of a Pelton turbine.

  • Alexandre PERRIG (2007) work tries to fully understand the physical phenomena involved in the Pelton turbine bucket flow.
  • Binaya K.C. and Bhola Thapa (2009) carried out a study mainly focused on finding the pressure distribution inside the Pelton bucket.
  • Bryan Patrick Ho-Yan's (2012) Design of a Low Head Pico Hydro Turbine for Rural Electrification in Cameroon considered, among other things, the general principles and the system components for Pico Hydro.

2.2 Justification of the Study

This work is mainly due to the perceived need for Nigeria to adopt, in a much larger number, small-scale hydroelectric generation. The need for this country to do so includes, but is not limited to the following reasons summarized below:

  • Low power costs: since small-scale hydro plants don’t require any form of fuel to run. In addition to this, it doesn’t require much resources or money to construct micro or Pico hydroelectric plants.
  • Reduced CO2 emissions.
  • Suitability for industrial applications.

Chapter three

Methodology.

In accomplishing this project work, the following methods will be used:

Design : an important and initial part of this work will be the studying of already existing designs of the Pelton turbine so as to be able to construct a high enough Pelton turbine for this project work.

Construction : construction of the turbines will be done with locally available materials. This will involve making a pattern and using a casting process to make construct the buckets, and then sourcing locally available materials for other components of the turbine system.

3.1 Pelton wheel design

The figure below shows the typical geometry of a Pelton type turbine.

The turbine will consist of buckets mounted on a flange. The buckets will be fastened on the flange with a pin. The flange will be mounted on a wheel necessitating the transfer of energy from water to the shaft horsepower.

Water emanating from a nozzle will be used to drive the runner, and the energy extracted from the water will be converted into mechanical energy. The shaft power will be used to drive an alternator to produce electricity.

3.2 Choice of Materials

In constructing the Pelton turbine buckets a heavy metal that will increase the torque obtainable, will be sought. But in the event whereby finding and using such materials for casting the buckets becomes too difficult, aluminium or plastic or any other available and suitable material will be used in the casting work.

The flange, where the buckets will be mounted will be fabricated from mild steel for easier machinability. The shaft will also be made of mild steel.

3.3 Cost analysis

The major cost that will be incurred from this project work will come from constructing the buckets for the Pelton wheel. The reason for this is that such parts are not manufactured in the country, and finding a workshop with a good level of expertise where such a furnace for casting work is available won’t be easy.

Another component that will add significantly to the cost will be a pump, piping, and nozzles that are necessary for demonstrating the working of the turbine. Having considered these and other components that will be needed in this work, the estimated cost for this work is as summarized below:

Turbine buckets23,000
Runner flange3000
Water pump12000
Piping and nozzles2000
Alternator4000
Bearings and shafts2000
Voltmeter2000

undergraduate research project writing tips for students

by admin | Jan 6, 2018 | Researching tips | 5 comments

One of the most important requirements for graduating from a tertiary institution is an undergraduate research project. An undergraduate student may be required to write a full research project under the supervision of a lecturer. This student may be assigned to a lecturer for supervision during the period of this research. The research is usually carried out within the limits of a student’s study. the Undergraduate research project writing process could be very intimidating but read through this guide before deciding if you will like to go through this process alone or if you will like to request for the service of some of our expert researchers here.

It is the duty of the researcher to receive the research proposals, make necessary assessments and approvals. Most often an external supervisor is brought in to provide an independent assessment of the undergraduate research project work.

Recommended: Hire an expert to write your undergraduate/post-graduate research project here

Research Proposals : Writing an undergraduate research project proposal is usually very tough for some students and this is primarily because most students are just doing this for the first time. But I can assure you that if you have been paying careful attention to some of the project writing tips posted on this site you will have little or no problem in the undergraduate research project writing process or while writing your proposals. The proposals for the topic should have the subject of the study, a brief but comprehensive description and justification for the work, aims and milestones, software and hardware to be employed, assumptions to be made, the research methodology and references.

Research Guideline : A typical undergraduate research project writing build-up will pass through these phases; researching, presentation and print submissions. These are to ensure that the student is adequately prepared for the harsh environment outside school.   While developing the content of your research (which is usually divided into five chapters), these are some very helpful guidelines that you should follow.

Recommended:   Request for our professional research writing services here

Undergraduate Research Project Format:

  • Approval page
  • Acknowledgement
  • Table of content
  • List of tables
  • List of figures
  • List of symbols/nomenclature(where applicable)
  • Main work(chapter 1-5)
  • Appendices(where applicable)

Title page: this is where you would have to remember the name of your institution and write it down in full, on no account should you write an abbreviated version of the name of your higher institution or a slug. Write out the name of your higher institution in full, the title of the research, the name of the author and your matriculation number, then the reason for the research, this is where you will write “it is in partial fulfillment of the course requirement required for the award of the B.Sc degree (or B.Art, LLB, B.Eng write what is applicable to your course of study).” Then add the date to it.

Title page fig1.0

Use the image below as a guide .

Approval page: the name of the institution and department, then a statement signifying approval for the work by the supervisor, head of department and external supervisor. Space is reserved for signatures of all listed parties as well.

Recommended:   Hire an expert to write your undergraduate/post-graduate research project here

Dedication Page: this is the part of the research where the student can either choose to dedicate the research to God, a friend, marriage partner, parents, children or Ancestors (this is common practice among African students)

Acknowledgement: this is the part where the researcher writes to acknowledge those that contributed to the success of the research project.

Abstract: the abstract is a brief summary of the major points of the written work and it is often written last with the tense in past. This summary is usually less than 100 words and it is expected to summarize the problem statement, the research methodology and recommendations. This should be in a single paragraph and the word limit not exceeded.

Table of content: the main heading(s) and sub-heading(s) and page numbers are listed here. This serves as a navigational map for the research work. Making page identification and reference very easy. The table of content should be edited at the end of the research so that every part of the work can be captured in the table of content

List of Tables/Figures/Symbols: the list is to aid the reader in locating tables/figures/symbols. It should contain the tag numbers, tags which reflects the content and the page numbers. It should be well-numbered and unambiguous. In the main content, the figure/table should be well-labeled

Chapter One: This is usually the introduction. It describes the background, scope and purpose of the research. The rest of the report should be tied to the information supplied. The researcher should strive to present sufficient details regarding why the study was carried out. Carefully laying out your content in a hierarchical order would be preferred. arrange the content from top to bottom. You can go on to conclude the chapter one of your research project with a linking paragraph that would expose the objectives, constraints and limitations of the study

Chapter Two: the chapter two of your research project should cover your literature theoretical review. Your research should be based on the ground work done by others and chapter is that chapter of the research project where you would have to present the work done by others, summarizing the points made by past authors and the areas left untouched by the authors. While writing your literature review you should properly give due credits to past authors and researchers whose work you may be using as a reference. You should reduce the use of quotation, paraphrasing may be preferred while writing your literature review. You could comment on the work of past authors on the field and care should be taken while writing a literature review not to derail into criticism of an existing literature on your subject of study as this is unprofessional and unethical. Focus should be on the author’s contributions and you should try to also point out some of the relevant facts and details left out by some of the past authors.

Chapter Three:  this part of your work contains the research methodology and the language used here should be in the past tense. It is a sum-up of the research design, procedures, the area and population of study, data sampling and data sources are detailed as well. The method used, from all alternatives, should also be justified. The materials and equipment used should be included.

Chapter Four : Data presentation and analysis. The results collated during the research will be presented here, that is why chapter four is usually the best place to use visual presentations like graphs, charts, tables etc. the results should be discussed here and compared to the result of past authors. the effects and application of the result should be detailed as well. When writing chapter four a research student should pay very close attention the data being analyzed to avoid simple errors that usually occur during data analysis. Data should be outline correctly and since we may have to deal with data this part of the research should be easier for a student with access to a computer.

Chapter five: This part houses the conclusions and recommendations. From the results of the research, conclusions are made, and then there are suggested options for improvement for other researchers with similar interest. Based on the whole happenings, recommendations are suggested for tackling the issues raised during the research.

References: this is a comprehensive list of all the books, journals, and other sources of information cited in the research work, this could either be online or print materials. Most students still use referenced materials to create heavily plagiarized research and they face disciplinary actions when caught. But not all schools presently organize plagiarism detection tests for their student’s research. it is however better to avoid writing plagiarized research work and all quoted and exact words of different sources should be properly referenced, in-text and at the references’ list/bibliography. MLA, APA and Chicago style are the commonest referencing styles.

Appendices: Materials that are relevant to the work but were not added should be listed here. This is to back-up the facts of the research. it encapsulates extensive proofs, official data from case study, list of parameters, et al.

  • After writing time should be taken to proof read the content of the research and if possible an independent editor should be consulted to help edit the research for grammatical and spelling errors as this may affect the quality of the research content.
  • Ensure that the final submission is clear and uses the specified font and font size required for the research.
  • Above all ensure that your research is up to standard, read through other works that have been written in your field and use them as a guide to writing your own research.

Open Educational Resources (OER) are free well funded Learning materials created in Most Developed Countries for free to learners in any part of the world. Previous Researchers had developed on the outcome of COL and UNESCO organized World OER Congress in Paris in 2012, with generous support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation which resulted in the Paris Declaration on OER. This has been a landmark development and as the recent Hewlett evaluation report states ‘The declaration provides an anchor and a direction for COL, UNESCO…and other advocates . It is an important reference for OER work’. (UNESCO, 2004). Adamkolo M Ibrahim

Information and communication technology (ICT) has become the buzzword in academia, government, business, economy and many other social purviews of human society, especially in the areas of sustainable development. From a mere acronym, ICT has over the last decade metamorphosed into the driving force behind many monumental changes and innovative development in the world. The author reviewed e-journal articles, chapters from e-books and other relevant literature that critically examined ICT and its wider applications in the realms of making life better for the majority of the people, particularly the indigent and information have-nots. The paper critically discusses and analyses some of the key areas where a successful application of ICT can effectively engender the much-needed sustainable development in society, focusing on Nigeria. Moreover, the paper outlines, inter-alia, agriculture, culture, economy, education, governance and tourism as paramount realms in which the proper application of ICT can help in the management of natural, human and capital resources for effective utilisation by the present generation without jeopardising the ability of future generations to benefit from them. The paper concludes that for ICT to serve as a catalyst for sustainable development, the following facts should be taken into consideration and adjustments made to accommodate them: ICT is a long-range investment (outcomes may be delayed); and, for natural resources to be sustainably harnessed, human resources ought to be adequately mobilised to appropriately manipulate the capital resources for better results. Keywords: ICT; sustainable development; critical purviews; management of natural, human and capital resources; Nigeria; Malaysia

Teaching online requires different skills, roles and competencies for online instructors compared to teaching in traditional learning environments. Universities should offer ongoing support in various forms to help academic staff through their online journey. This paper provides insights into a multinational faculty development program for teaching online, elaborating on results of expectancy and satisfaction surveys. From a local program to a subproject within the Swiss National Science Foundation Project Scopes, e-Tutor aimed at expanding competencies in online lecturing and providing OER material for training colleagues. Designed in the form of a descriptive case study, this research was conducted with 34 attendees of e-Tutor. Data was collected using an e-learning readiness and expectancy questionnaire, and open-ended questions after the program to measure satisfaction. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the survey data and content analysis for open-ended data. Participants considered e-Tutor a well-planned and targeted program with good theoretical and practical balance. Duration of such courses, opportunities for adaptation to real-life situations, and localization of the content are areas to be explored further. For future studies, it would also be interesting to see whether participants can apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills to create efficient online learning environments.
