I’ve been there. 

Every time you write an essay, you want to catch your readers’ undivided attention from the very first word. The opening hook has to be *perfect* — no compromises. 

But, instead of reeling under pressure to come up with this elusively perfect essay hook at the eleventh hour, I’ve found a better way to write great essay hooks. 

In this guide, I’ll tell you what it takes to write the most compelling and attention-grabbing hooks. I’ll also break down six awesome types of essay hooks you can experiment with and share examples to inspire your next opening statement.

What is an Essay Hook?

An essay hook is the opening statement of an essay, written to capture readers' attention and nudge them to learn more about the topic. Also known as a lede or lead, this hook introduces readers to the topic/theme of the essay and piques their curiosity to continue reading. 

The hook creates the entire narrative for your essay. It tells readers what to expect from the rest of the essay and creates context around your main argument or thesis statement. 

6 Types of Essay Hooks You Can Experiment With

I’ve created this handy list of six different types of essay hooks. You can choose the one that best fits your essay’s context and create a stellar opening statement within minutes. 

1. Compelling fact or statistic

Lead with evidence and use a powerful fact or statistic as your essay hook. It’s one of the best ways to capture readers’ attention from the start and keep them intrigued throughout your essay. 

For example, if you’re writing about the importance of time management for freelancers, you have two options to create your opening sentence:

Generic : “Managing time as a freelancer is no easy feat.”

Impactful : “Nearly 70% of freelancers struggle to effectively divide and manage their time between multiple clients.” 

This data point, linked to the original research, sets a strong tone for your essay and draws people in to read more. It communicates

2. Bold claim hook

When working on an argumentative essay , I always write with the mindset that nobody has the time to read my thoughts from start to finish. So, I have to get to the point quickly and make a solid argument worth people’s time. 

That's when opening with a bold claim works best. Condense all your views on the topic into a few thought-provoking lines that would make readers go, hmmm…

But remember, you can't open with a claim that people already know and accept as fact. It has to be something original and unique to make your readers tick, nudging them to dive deeper into your essay. 

For example, if you’re writing about water crisis, you have two options to open your essay: 

‍ "In some regions, there is not enough clean water for people to use."
‍ "Imagine a world where every drop of water is a battle, a precious commodity fought over by scores of people and animals alike. This can become a reality as early as 2050."

This bold claim presents a convincing argument about the global water crisis. It also emphasizes the urgency of this argument with a research-backed statistic.

3. Story/Anecdote hook

In all my years of writing, I’ve noticed how stories have a unique effect on people. A good story can resonate with a bigger audience, pique their curiosity, and deliver a more personal message. 

That's why you can cite a personal anecdote or talk about a publicly known story as a good hook for your essay. This hook allows you to play with words and work in more storytelling . 

One of my favorite writing tips applies here: enter the scene as late as possible and leave as early as possible. You have to keep it crisp instead of rambling on and on. 

Consider these two examples:

Either of these hooks could work fine if we were just writing a personal essay about a move to a new place. But if we’re specifically writing about the sky, the second example is better. It sticks to the point — the sky and the color of the sky — and doesn’t stray into irrelevant details.

4. Question Hook

Humans have a tendency to immediately look for answers every time they come across fascinating questions. Using questions as essay hooks can reel people into your essay and feed their curiosity.

But questions are also fairly overused in essays. You don't want to use a generic question that makes people say, " Not another question ." 

Instead, think of questions that approach your topic from a fresh angle. This means honing in on what was especially interesting or surprising from your research—and maybe even brainstorming different questions to find the most fascinating one.

For example, if you’re writing about the psychology behind why we buy, you have two options to open your essay:

‍ “Do you know what factors compel us to buy certain things?”

“Before buying anything, have you ever taken a moment to pause and think about possible reasons driving you to this purchase?”

The latter is more descriptive and creates a realistic scenario for readers to truly think about the topic of the essay.

5. Description hook

A descriptive hook works best when writing an explanatory or opinion-led essay. Descriptive hooks, as the name suggests, illustrate a topic in detail to create context for the essay. It's a good way to build awareness for and educate readers on lesser-known themes.

But a descriptive hook can easily become too plain or unexciting to read. To make it work, you have to write an engaging description using imagery, analogies, and other figures of speech. 

Remember to make your hook reader-friendly by avoiding passive voice, mainstream cliches, and lengthy sentences.

Consider this example:

Describing a sunset is too cliche, so cross that one off the list. Describing the sky as it is on a normal day wouldn't be shocking or unexpected, so scratch that one, too.

This example creates something unique by using analogies to describe the color of the sky and painting a beautiful picture.

One of my favorite essay hooks is to open with a persuasive metaphor to contextualize the topic. Metaphors can help you approach the topic from a completely different lens and wow your readers with interesting insight. 

Metaphors are also super versatile to make your writing more impactful. You can write a one-line metaphor or create a scenario comparing one thing to another and linking it to your topic.

Short & sweet: "Joining a startup is like strapping into a rollercoaster: be ready to witness thrilling highs and sinking drops."

Long & descriptive : “Picture a small sailboat navigating the unpredictable winds and tides in a vast ocean. That’s a startup operating in a massive market. And with the right vision, this journey is filled with risks and rewards.”

What to Know About Your Essay (and Topic) Before You Write the Hook

Whether you’re writing a research paper on economics, an argumentative essay for your college composition class, or a personal essay sharing your thoughts on a topic, you need to nail down a few things before you settle on the first line for your essay.

‍ Let me break them down for you. 

1. Gain in-depth knowledge of your topic

Before you start writing your essay, you need to know your topic — not just in name, but in-depth. You don't have to become a subject matter expert overnight. But you do need to research the topic inside out 

Your research will help you:

  • Narrow your focus
  • Build an argument
  • Shape the narrative

Your research insights determine your essay’s structure and guide your choice of hook. 

After organizing your research in a neat outline, think to yourself: ‍Did you uncover a shocking fact? A compelling anecdote? An interesting quote? Any of those things could be your hook.

⚡ ‍ Take action:  After finishing your research, review your notes and think through your essay. Mark or make a list of anything compelling enough to be a good lead.

2. Type of essay

In academic settings, there are generally three kinds of essays:

  • Argumentative: Making the case for a certain stance or route of action.
  • Expository: Explaining the who, what, when, where, why, and how of some phenomenon.
  • Narrative: Telling a true story as a way to explore different ideas.

‍ The type of essay you’re writing is key to choosing the best hook for your piece. 

A serious argumentative essay can start with a shocking statistic or a bold claim. And an expository essay can open with a descriptive hook while a metaphor hook would work best for a narrative essay.

⚡ ‍ Take action: Go through your list of potential hooks and cross out anything that doesn't fit the type of essay you're writing, whether it's persuasive , argumentative, or any other type.

3. Audience and tone

A best practice I often share with writers is to think of one reader and keep yourself in their shoes . This exercise can tell you so much about your audience — what kind of tone they like, what matters the most to them, what topics interest them, and so on. 

You can use these insights to create a compelling essay hook. Here’s how:

  • For an argumentative essay, you’re trying to convince someone who doesn’t agree with you that what you’re claiming is right or, at least, reasonable. You don’t want to turn them off with snarky or offensive language — but you do want to be authoritative. Your hook should match that tone and support your effort.
  • A narrative essay is likely to welcome more lyrical language, so starting with a colorful description or an anecdote might make more sense than, say, a bold claim or surprising fact. Whatever tone you choose for your narrative essay — comical or gentle or bold — should be used for your hook.
  • ‍ Expository essays can use all sorts of tones and be written to a variety of audiences, so think carefully about the tone that best fits your subject matter. An essay explaining how the human body shuts down when overdosed will likely require a different tone than one on the lives of circus masters in the late 1800s. 

⚡ ‍ Take action: Look at your list. Can you write these potential hooks in a tone that suits your subject and audience?

4. Length of essay

Are you writing a 10-page paper or a three-page reflection? Or is this your senior thesis, pushing over 100 pages?

‍ If you’re writing a shorter paper, you’ll want to keep your hook quick and snappy.  

Readers are expecting a quick read, and they don’t want to spend five minutes only going through the introduction. 

In contrast, you can approach a longer essay — like a senior thesis or a term paper — with a longer hook. Just make sure your hook relates to and supports the core point of your essay. You don’t want to waste space describing a scene that ultimately has nothing to do with the rest of your piece.

⚡ ‍ Take action: If you write out the items on your list, how long will they be? A sentence or paragraph? Perfect. Two to five paragraphs? Unless your essay is on the longer side, you may want to save that information for later in the piece.

‍ Now that you know the basic facts about what you’re writing, let’s look at some approaches you could use to catch those readers — and reel them in.

3 Approaches to Avoid When Writing Hooks 

I’ve read hundreds of essays — enough to recognize lazy writing from the first few words. It’s equally easy for readers to discard your essays as ‘poorly written’ just by reading the first line. 

So, I made a list of three types of essay hooks you want to avoid at all costs because these hooks can only disappoint your readers. 

1. Quotations

Quotes are probably the most overused type of hook in any form of writing. What's even worse is rinsing and repeating the same old quotes from Abraham Lincoln or Nelson Mandela in your essays. 

No matter how powerful a quote sounds, you shouldn’t slap it at the opening of your essay. It doesn’t give readers the excitement of reading something original and looks lazy.

For example, if you’re writing an essay on productivity, here’s what a good and bad lede looks like:

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work” – Stephen King
Did you know that consuming 100 gms of sugar can slash your productivity levels by over 50% in a day?  

2. Definitions

The New Oxford American Dictionary defines a hook as "a thing designed to catch people's attention." 

If I opened my article with this dictionary definition of a hook, you’d have either dozed off or left this page long back to find something more interesting. 

Here's the thing: definitions put people to sleep. Readers don't want to see a formal, jargon-heavy definition of a topic as the very first line of an essay. Your opening statement should have some personality in it to show readers they're in for an exciting read. 

For example, if you’re writing about happy hormones, here’s what a good and bad lede looks like:

Happy hormones are known to boost the happiness levels in your body by creating positive feelings.
Ever wondered why cat videos make you instantly happy, and ice creams give you an extra dose of energy? It's all about how happy hormones control our brain chemistry.

3. “Imagine this”

Opening your essay with "Imagine this" used to be an interesting way to put your readers in a scenario and set the context for your essay. But now, it's far too cliched and just another lazy attempt to write an essay hook. 

You can create a relatable scenario for users without asking them to imagine or picture it. Use the descriptive hook format with an interesting choice of words to convey the same ideas more creatively.

For example, if you’re writing an essay on preparing for higher studies abroad, here’s what a good and bad lede looks like:

Imagine this: You’ve been applying to multiple universities, writing SOPs, and preparing for exams without guidance. Everything can go south any minute. 
College application season is officially here. But with each passing day, you’re under more and more stress to apply to your chosen colleges and tick all the items off your list.

‍Our Go-To Trick for Writing Catchy Hooks

This opening statement can make or break your entire essay. While I’ve broken down my best tips to create the best essay hooks, here’s a surefire way to write compelling openings :

Go through your notes and either outline your essay or write the whole thing. This way, you’ll know the central thread (or throughline) that runs throughout your piece. 

Once your essay or outline is complete, go back through and identify a particularly compelling fact, claim, or example that relates to that central thread.

‍Write up that fact, claim, or example as the hook for your essay using any of the methods we’ve covered. Then revise or write your essay so the hook leads smoothly into the rest of the piece and you don’t repeat that information elsewhere.

What is an essay hook?

An essay hook is a sentence or two that piques the reader’s interest, compelling them to continue reading. In most cases, the hook is the first sentence or two, but it may be the entire opening paragraph. Hooks for essays are always in the first section because this is where the essay needs to hook its reader. If the reader isn’t engaged within the first few lines, they’ll likely stop reading.

An essay hook also sets the tone for the rest of your essay. For example, an unexpected statistic in an essay’s first line can tell the reader that the rest of the essay will dispel myths and shed light on the essay’s topic .

1 rhetorical questions.

Rhetorical questions are popular essay hooks because they make readers think. For example, an essay might start with the question “Is it ethical to eat animals?” Before reading the rest of the essay, the reader answers the question in their mind. As they continue to read, the writer’s arguments challenge the reader’s answer and may change their mind.

2 Fact/statistic

When an essay discusses scientific subjects, social issues, current events, or controversial subjects, a fact or statistic related to the essay’s topic can be a compelling hook. For example, an essay about elementary student literacy might hook readers with a statistic about the percentage of fourth graders that are proficient readers.

The hook could be a fact or statistic that’s well-known and frames the topic in a relatable way, or it could be a completely unexpected or seemingly unintuitive one that surprises the reader. In any case, they set the tone for the rest of the essay by supporting the writer’s position from the outset.

Quotes are often used as essay hooks because they’re succinct, often recognizable, and when they’re from an expert source, they can support the writer’s position.

For example, an analytical essay comparing two books might hook readers with a quote from one of the books’ authors that sets the tone for the rest of the essay and gives a glimpse into that author’s work.

Anecdotes are often used as hooks in personal essays. A personal story makes the essay relatable, creating familiarity with the reader that makes them want to read more. An example of an anecdote hook is a persuasive essay about rerouting traffic on campus that starts with a personal story of a vehicular close call.

5 Description

A description focuses on specific imagery related to the essay’s subject. For example, an argumentative essay in support of new recycling policies might hook readers with a bleak description of what happens to batteries and other hazardous materials when they aren’t recycled.

6 Common misconception

Similar to an unexpected fact, a hook that dispels a common misconception surprises the reader and educates them about something they likely misunderstood. For example, a compare-and-contrast essay about different mindfulness strategies might start with a common misconception about how mindfulness works.

Creating a hook for different writing prompts

Strong hooks for essays align with the essays’ tones, types, and topics. As you start working on an essay, think about your topic and goals for the essay. Are you trying to persuade the reader? Dispelling a common misconception can be the hook you need. Are you telling an entertaining personal story with bigger themes about your life experience? Start it off with an engaging anecdote. Are you defending a position? Share an unexpected fact and let the truth speak for itself.

Sometimes, it’s not easy to tell which kind of hook your essay needs. When this is the case, it can be helpful to write the rest of your essay, then come back to your introduction and write the kind of hook that would make you want to read that whole essay. Refer to your essay outline to ensure that it fits your essay goals.

Okay, so I can’t exactly promise that by reading this post alone you’ll get an awesome grade on your next paper. But that opening line likely grabbed your attention, right?

You’re still reading this post, so not only did the line serve as an attention grabber, but it compelled you to continue reading because you want to learn how to get a better grade.

That’s the entire purpose of an attention grabber: to get readers to take notice and become interested in what you have to say.

How do you write an attention grabber that works for your paper? Here are a few tips for writing an opening line that deserves to be noticed.

But First… What Not to Do

Before we get into a discussion of how to write attention grabbers, let’s stop for a minute to talk about two things you shouldn’t do.

Don’t write in first person (unless you’re writing a narrative or reflective essay). Most academic essays frown on using first person point of view , so don’t try to make your statement by including a story about yourself or your opinion.

Don’t write in second person. It can be tempting to try to engage your audience by writing a second-person attention grabber that starts with something like “Imagine yourself sitting on the beach…” or “What would you do if…?”

Avoid these tired, boring openings. They’re not only cliche, but they also infuriate profs. (Second-person point of view is also pretty much universally forbidden in formal essays .)

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s get our discussion rolling and talk about what you should do.

When it comes to attention grabbers, one size definitely does not fit all.

What might be a brilliant opening for a description essay will likely be inappropriate for a research paper . (Some attention grabbers, however, can be revised into great openings for different types of papers.)

With that in mind, I’ve included a few types of attention grabbers you might use depending on which type of essay you’re writing.

Narrative essay attention grabbers

A narrative essay tells a story and is one of the few instances in which you’re actually allowed to write in first person.

If you want to get someone interested in hearing your story, try starting with a  dialogue quote that might be part of your tale, a strange event from your narrative that intrigues readers, or anything else that will make your audience take notice .

Don’t start with boring old lines like “Last semester, I…,” “When I was five, we…,” or “It was a night I’ll never forget.”

Try something more unique like one of the following openings:

  • When I woke up and was finally able to focus, I realized I was lying in a field and was surrounded by five Chihuahua puppies.
  • “Never put pizza in the dryer” was his famous line, and I never understood what he meant until years after he first uttered the strange phrase.

Interested in how someone ends up in a field, surrounded by puppies? Obviously. Want to know why someone would tell you not to put pizza in a dryer? Me too—and that’s exactly the result you want. You want people to be interested enough to keep reading.

A descriptive essay is all about the senses. Your goal is to bring the description to life by incorporating any relevant senses to help readers put themselves in the scene.

It makes sense, then, that an attention grabber for a descriptive essay includes sensory references, right?

Don’t just start listing things for the sake of including senses, though. Write with a purpose. Write to get people interested in reading more about whatever it is you’re describing.

Here are two examples:

  • The beauty of one simple flower can create a relaxing aura in the madness of a hectic day.
  • One lonely flower mimics the emptiness of the cold, sterile room.

These two examples use the same flower as their focus, but their messages are entirely different based on the writer’s perspective.

In these examples, readers will (hopefully) be intrigued as to why one flower can impact so much. You might, for instance, describe not only the flower but also the surrounding room and your mood while observing the flower.

NOTE: While some profs let you write a descriptive essay in first person, others prefer a description written entirely in third person . (Check your assignment guidelines before you start writing.)

Persuasive and argumentative essay attention grabbers

Persuasive essays and argument essays attempt to convince readers about something.

In order to make your readers believe your arguments or claims , you need to use evidence (either from sources or personal opinion, depending on your assignment).

Having a ton or great evidence and lots of support from sources does you no good, though, if readers aren’t first interested in reading your paper.

To get them interested, try one of these types of attention grabbers:

  • A startling fact
  • A shocking statistic
  • An interesting quote

These types of attention grabbers spark curiosity and get people thinking about your topic.

Here are two examples of attention grabbers in a persuasive or argumentative essay:

  • In 2016–17, students who borrowed money to attend college ultimately graduated from four-year institutions with an average of $28,500 in debt ( CollegeBoard.org ).
  • “There is scarcely anything that drags a person down like debt.”—P.T. Barnum

If you’re a college student with student loans, you can relate to both of these statements.

Thus, these attention grabbers not only pique readers’ interest with a shocking statistic or interesting statement, but they do so by making a personal connection with readers.

What Is an Essay Hook?

An essay hook is essentially a sentence that captures the reader’s attention . It is designed to incite intrigue or curiosity about the topic. These are usually located at the beginning of a piece of writing. Think of your hook as the first impression your essay gives to readers.

There are many types of essay hooks. These include Question, Declaration, Statistic, Simile, Story, Description, and Quotation. Each of these types will be discussed in greater detail in the next section.

Essay hooks are generally one to three sentences long, depending on the overall length of your essay. You don’t want to make an overly long hook; otherwise, it’ll lose the reader’s attention.

Types of Attention Grabbing Essay Hooks

Question hook.

Starting your essay with an interesting question hook is a common writing technique to get the reader intrigued. This is an effective and creative way to open the essay. It helps convince your readers to read your essay immediately because they want to know the answers.

Declaration/Statement Hook

An assertive statement hook asserts your topic. Your thesis statement is connected to it and shows the importance of your essay or paper.

It’s a great technique because it won’t matter whether or not your readers will agree with you. They will read your essay because they want to see how you support your views. 

Statistic/Fact Hook

Unlike your declaration hook, which can be based on opinions, a statistic hook uses factual statements. This can make your essay seem more credible and earn your readers’ trust.

You can quote actual data from studies, news articles, or books. It is important to ensure that the statement you make is well researched.

Story hooks are a more creative way to start your essay. You can begin with a short story or episode related to your topic. Writing a well-written and memorable story is important to get your readers interested.

An effective story hook relies on connecting the story directly to your essay or paper. You can choose to tell a personal story or makeup one.

This kind of hook is perfect for literary pieces or personal stories. Don’t use it for formal topics, such as business or economics.

Description Hook

This kind of hook involves painting a vivid picture for your readers. It can be composed of detailed descriptions, interesting anecdotes, or other comparable elements that allow the reader to picture or hear the essay. These can be a powerful way of capturing your audience’s attention.

Simile/Metaphor Hook

The metaphor and simile hook aim to engage your readers by making them think about a topic differently. It usually involves comparing two things that may seem unrelated.

Quotation Hook

Another way to start your essay off is with an inspirational or interesting quotation. The quote doesn’t necessarily need to be from a famous person. Just make sure that it relates to what you’re writing about and that it resonates with your reader.

However, no matter which method you use, you need to make sure that your hook either supports your thesis or provides an opposing stance to which you can argue.

Rhetorical Generalizations

One effective way to grab your reader's attention is to issue a general statement about your subject as a pathway into the argument. Consider the following thesis: "Because recycling technology isn't yet cost effective, we'd be better off relying on traditional garbage disposal while using funds currently allocated for recycling to develop new, efficient recycling technology." You could open with a generalization, such as "We can all agree that recycling is a good idea." A statement like this aligns your sensibilities with your reader's, and simultaneously introduces your subject in a way that leads you into an argument that will challenge the way readers think about recycling.

Surprising facts work as attention grabbers because they teach the reader something interesting and unexpected. These facts can take the form of statistics, or obscure information related to your subject. For example, if your essay argues that higher education is a waste of money, you could open with a statistic about the staggering number of college graduates who can't find employment within their fields of study. Remember, if you're going to use a surprising fact or statistic, make sure it works to support your thesis, and isn't just an unrelated gimmick to get your reader's attention.

Quotations, like surprising facts, are effective for engaging your reader with the subject of your argument, and make the reader feel as though they've been dropped right into a conversation about the topic. Using quotations also bolsters your credibility because you are citing an outside source to help prove your thesis. When quoting somebody directly, make sure to place their words in quotation marks, and attribute the quote to its source. For example, if you are writing an essay arguing that the U.S. government should increase funding for NASA to search for alien life on distant planets, you might open with the following quote and attribution: "'To confine our attention to terrestrial matters would be to limit the human spirit.' These were Dr. Stephen Hawking's words regarding our need to explore the cosmos."

Perhaps the most effective method of grabbing a reader's attention is to use an anecdote. Anecdotes are short stories that illustrate a point. When used properly, they can captivate your audience, and even make them forget they're reading an essay. When opening with a story, start right in the middle of a scene. Use descriptive language to paint the setting, and strong verbs to describe the actions so your reader can experience the events as though they were reading a novel. Furthermore, don't tell readers how they should feel about the anecdote, show them in a way that allows them to figure out the theme for themselves. For example, if you're writing a personal essay about how your brother always stole from your family and made life difficult, don't say that he's a thief; show him stealing something.

9.2 The Attention-Getter: The First Step of an Introduction

Learning objectives.

As you know by now, a good introduction will capture an audience’s attention, while a bad introduction can turn an audience against a speaker. An attention-getter is the device a speaker uses at the beginning of a speech to capture an audience’s interest and make them interested in the speech’s topic. Typically, there are four things to consider in choosing a specific attention-getting device:

  • Appropriateness or relevance to audience
  • Purpose of speech

First, when selecting an attention-getting device, you want to make sure that the option you choose is actually appropriate and relevant to your specific audience. Different audiences will have different backgrounds and knowledge, so you should use your audience analysis to determine whether specific information you plan on using would be appropriate for a specific audience. For example, if you’re giving a speech on family units to a group of individuals over the age of sixty-five, starting your speech with a reference to the television show Gossip Girl may not be the best idea because the television show may not be relevant to that audience.

Second, you need to consider the basic purpose of your speech. As discussed earlier in this text, there are three basic purposes you can have for giving a speech: to inform, to persuade, and to entertain. When selecting an attention-getter, you want to make sure that you select one that corresponds with your basic purpose. If your goal is to entertain an audience, then starting a speech with a quotation about how many people are dying in Africa each day from malnutrition may not be the best way to get your audience’s attention. Remember, one of the basic goals of an introduction is to prepare your audience for your speech. If your attention-getter differs drastically in tone from the rest of your speech (e.g., dying in Africa when you want your audience to laugh), the disjointedness may cause your audience to become confused or tune you out completely.

Your third basic consideration when picking an attention-getting device is your speech topic. Ideally, your attention-getting device should have a relevant connection to your speech. Imagine if a speaker pulled condoms out of his pocket, yelled “Free sex!” and threw the condoms at the audience in the beginning of a speech about the economy. While this may clearly get the audience’s attention, this isn’t really a good way to prepare an audience for a speech about bull and bear markets. Not every attention-getter is appropriate for a given topic. Instead, a speaker could start this speech by explaining that “according to a 2004 episode of 60 Minutes, adults in the United States spend approximately $10 billion annually on adult entertainment, which is roughly the equivalent to the amounts they spend attending professional sporting events, buying music, or going out to the movies” (Leung, 2004). Notice how effective the shocking statistic is in clearly introducing the monetary value of the adult entertainment industry.

The last consideration when picking an attention-getting device involves the speech occasion. Different occasions will necessitate different tones, or particular styles or manners of speaking. For example, a persuasive speech about death and dying shouldn’t be happy and hilarious. An informative speech on the benefits of laughing shouldn’t be dull, dreary, and depressing. When selecting an attention-getter, you want to make sure that the attention-getter sets the tone for the speech.

Now that we’ve explored the four major considerations you must think of when selecting an attention-getter, let’s look at a range of different attention-getters you may employ. Miller (1946) discovered that speakers tend to use one of eleven attention-getting devices when starting a speech. The rest of this section is going to examine these eleven attention-getting devices.

Reference to Subject

The first attention-getting method to consider is to tell your audience the subject of your speech. This device is probably the most direct, but it may also be the least interesting of the possible attention-getters. Here’s an example:

We are surrounded by statistical information in today’s world, so understanding statistics is becoming paramount to citizenship in the twenty-first century.

This sentence explicitly tells an audience that the speech they are about to hear is about the importance of understanding statistics. While this isn’t the most entertaining or interesting attention-getter, it is very clear and direct.

Reference to Audience

The second attention-getting device to consider is a direct reference to the audience. In this case, the speaker has a clear understanding of the audience and points out that there is something unique about the audience that should make them interested in the speech’s content. Here’s an example:

As human resource professionals, you and I know the importance of talent management. In today’s competitive world, we need to invest in getting and keeping the best talent for our organizations to succeed.

In this example, the speaker reminds the audience of their shared status as human resource professionals and uses the common ground to acknowledge the importance of talent management in human resources.

Another way to capture your listeners’ attention is to use the words of another person that relate directly to your topic. Maybe you’ve found a really great quotation in one of the articles or books you read while researching your speech. If not, you can also use a number of sources that compile useful quotations from noted individuals. Probably the most famous quotation book of all time is Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations ( http://www.bartleby.com/100 ), now in its seventeenth edition. Here are some other websites that contain useful databases of quotations for almost any topic:

  • http://www.quotationspage.com
  • http://www.bartleby.com/quotations
  • http://www.moviequotes.com
  • http://www.quotesandsayings.com
  • http://www.quoteland.com

Quotations are a great way to start a speech, so let’s look at an example that could be used for a speech on deception:

Oliver Goldsmith, a sixteenth-century writer, poet, and physician, once noted that “the true use of speech is not so much to express our wants as to conceal them.”

Reference to Current Events

Referring to a current news event that relates to your topic is often an effective way to capture attention, as it immediately makes the audience aware of how relevant the topic is in today’s world. For example, consider this attention-getter for a persuasive speech on frivolous lawsuits:

On January 10, 2007, Scott Anthony Gomez Jr. and a fellow inmate escaped from a Pueblo, Colorado, jail. During their escape the duo attempted to rappel from the roof of the jail using a makeshift ladder of bed sheets. During Gomez’s attempt to scale the building, he slipped, fell forty feet, and injured his back. After being quickly apprehended, Gomez filed a lawsuit against the jail for making it too easy for him to escape.

In this case, the speaker is highlighting a news event that illustrates what a frivolous lawsuit is, setting up the speech topic of a need for change in how such lawsuits are handled.

Historical Reference

You may also capture your listeners’ attention by referring to a historical event related to your topic. Obviously, this strategy is closely related to the previous one, except that instead of a recent news event you are reaching further back in history to find a relevant reference. For example, if you are giving a speech on the Iraq War that began in 2003, you could refer back to the Vietnam War as way of making a comparison:

During the 1960s and ’70s, the United States intervened in the civil strife between North and South Vietnam. The result was a long-running war of attrition in which many American lives were lost and the country of Vietnam suffered tremendous damage and destruction. Today, we see a similar war being waged in Iraq. American lives are being lost, and stability has not yet returned to the region.

In this example, the speaker is evoking the audience’s memories of the Vietnam War to raise awareness of similarities to the war in Iraq.

Another device you can use to start a speech is to tell an anecdote related to the speech’s topic. An anecdote is a brief account or story of an interesting or humorous event. Notice the emphasis here is on the word “brief.” A common mistake speakers make when telling an anecdote is to make the anecdote too long. Remember, your entire introduction should only be 10 to 15 percent of your speech, so your attention-getter must be very short.

One type of anecdote is a real story that emphasizes a speech’s basic message. For example, here is an anecdote a speaker could use to begin a speech on how disconnected people are from the real world because of technology:

In July 2009, a high school girl named Alexa Longueira was walking along a main boulevard near her home on Staten Island, New York, typing in a message on her cell phone. Not paying attention to the world around her, she took a step and fell right into an open manhole (Whitney, 2009).

A second type of anecdote is a parable or fable. A parable or fable is an allegorical anecdote designed to teach general life lessons. The most widely known parables for most Americans are those given in the Bible and the best-known fables are Aesop’s Fables ( http://www.aesopfables.com ). For the same speech on how disconnected people are with the real world because of technology, the speaker could have used the Fable of The Boy and the Filberts:

The ancient Greek writer Aesop told a fable about a boy who put his hand into a pitcher of filberts. The boy grabbed as many of the delicious nuts as he possibly could. But when he tried to pull them out, his hand wouldn’t fit through the neck of the pitcher because he was grasping so many filberts. Instead of dropping some of them so that his hand would fit, he burst into tears and cried about his predicament. The moral of the story? “Don’t try to do too much at once” (Aesop, 1881).

After recounting this anecdote, the speaker could easily relate the fable to the notion that the technology in our society leads us to try to do too many things at once.

While parables and fables are short and entertaining, their application to your speech topic should be clear. We’ll talk about this idea in more detail later in this chapter when we discuss how to link your attention-getter explicitly to your topic.

Startling Statement

The eighth device you can use to start a speech is to surprise your audience with startling information about your topic. Often, startling statements come in the form of statistics and strange facts. The goal of a good startling statistic is that it surprises the audience and gets them engaged in your topic. For example, if you’re giving a speech about oil conservation, you could start by saying, “A Boeing 747 airliner holds 57,285 gallons of fuel.” You could start a speech on the psychology of dreams by noting, “The average person has over 1,460 dreams a year.” A strange fact, on the other hand, is a statement that does not involve numbers but is equally surprising to most audiences. For example, you could start a speech on the gambling industry by saying, “There are no clocks in any casinos in Las Vegas.” You could start a speech on the Harlem Globetrotters by saying, “In 2000, Pope John Paul II became the most famous honorary member of the Harlem Globetrotters.” All four of these examples came from a great website for strange facts ( http://www.strangefacts.com ).

Although startling statements are fun, it is important to use them ethically. First, make sure that your startling statement is factual. The Internet is full of startling statements and claims that are simply not factual, so when you find a statement you’d like to use, you have an ethical duty to ascertain its truth before you use it. Second, make sure that your startling statement is relevant to your speech and not just thrown in for shock value. We’ve all heard startling claims made in the media that are clearly made for purposes of shock or fear mongering. As speakers, we have an ethical obligation to avoid playing on people’s emotions in this way.

Another strategy for getting your audience’s attention is to ask them a question. There are two types of questions commonly used as attention-getters: response questions and rhetorical questions. A response question is a question that the audience is expected to answer in some manner. For example, you could ask your audience, “Please raise your hand if you have ever thought about backpacking in Europe” or “Have you ever voted for the Electoral College? If so, stand up.” In both of these cases, the speaker wants her or his audience to respond. A rhetorical question , on the other hand, is a question to which no actual reply is expected. For example, a speaker talking about the importance of HIV testing could start by asking the audience, “I have two questions that I’d like you to think about. How many students on this campus have had sexual intercourse? Of those who have had sex, how many have been tested for HIV?” In this case, the speaker does not expect the audience to give an estimate of the numbers of students that fit into each category but rather to think about the questions as the speech goes on.

Humor is another effective method for gaining an audience’s attention. Humor is an amazing tool when used properly. We cannot begin to explain all the amazing facets of humor within this text, but we can say that humor is a great way of focusing an audience on what you are saying. However, humor is a double-edged sword. If you do not wield the sword carefully, you can turn your audience against you very quickly. When using humor, you really need to know your audience and understand what they will find humorous. One of the biggest mistakes a speaker can make is to use some form of humor that the audience either doesn’t find funny or finds offensive. Think about how incompetent the character of Michael Scott seems on the television program The Office , in large part because of his ineffective use of humor. We always recommend that you test out humor of any kind on a sample of potential audience members prior to actually using it during a speech.

Now that we’ve warned you about the perils of using humor, let’s talk about how to use humor as an attention-getter. Humor can be incorporated into several of the attention-getting devices mentioned. You could use a humorous anecdote, quotation, or current event. As with other attention-getting devices, you need to make sure your humor is relevant to your topic, as one of the biggest mistakes some novices make when using humor is to add humor that really doesn’t support the overall goal of the speech. So when looking for humorous attention-getters you want to make sure that the humor is nonoffensive to your audiences and relevant to your speech. For example, here’s a humorous quotation from Nicolas Chamfort, a French author during the sixteenth century, “The only thing that stops God from sending another flood is that the first one was useless.” While this quotation could be great for some audiences, other audiences may find this humorous quotation offensive (e.g., religious audiences). The Chamfort quotation could be great for a speech on the ills of modern society, but probably not for a speech on the state of modern religious conflict. You want to make sure that the leap from your attention-getter to your topic isn’t too complicated for your audience, or the attention-getter will backfire.

Personal Reference

The tenth device you may consider to start a speech is to refer to a story about yourself that is relevant for your topic. Some of the best speeches are ones that come from personal knowledge and experience. If you are an expert or have firsthand experience related to your topic, sharing this information with the audience is a great way to show that you are credible during your attention-getter. For example, if you had a gastric bypass surgery and you wanted to give an informative speech about the procedure, you could introduce your speech in this way:

In the fall of 2008, I decided that it was time that I took my life into my own hands. After suffering for years with the disease of obesity, I decided to take a leap of faith and get a gastric bypass in an attempt to finally beat the disease.

If you use a personal example, don’t get carried away with the focus on yourself and your own life. Your speech topic is the purpose of the attention-getter, not the other way around. Another pitfall in using a personal example is that it may be too personal for you to maintain your composure. For example, a student once started a speech about her grandmother by stating, “My grandmother died of cancer at 3:30 this morning.” The student then proceeded to cry nonstop for ten minutes. While this is an extreme example, we strongly recommend that you avoid any material that could get you overly choked up while speaking. When speakers have an emotional breakdown during their speech, audience members stop listening to the message and become very uncomfortable.

Reference to Occasion

The last device we mention for starting a speech is to refer directly to the speaking occasion. This attention-getter is only useful if the speech is being delivered for a specific occasion. Many toasts, for example, start with the following statement: “Today we are here to honor X.” In this case, the “X” could be a retirement, a marriage, a graduation, or any number of other special occasions. Because of its specific nature, this attention-getter is the least likely to be used for speeches being delivered for college courses.

Hooks and Grabbers

A hook or grabber is a catchy, compelling opening that is meant to grab readers’ attention and draw them into the essay.

Examples of hooks/grabbers include:

  • An intriguing question that will make readers curious
  • A historical or current-events example of the concepts being discussed
  • A personal example of how the writer connects to the topic
  • A summary or example of an important problem that will be explored in the essay

If you use a hook/grabber in your introduction, you will still need to include the other elements of an introduction. As a general rule, the hook/grabber should comprise less than half of the introduction, leaving plenty of room to explain the essay’s main ideas and thesis statement. The hook/grabber should always have a direct connection to the thesis of the essay.

When and How to Use Hooks and Grabbers

Not all types of writing use hooks/grabbers. The choice of whether to use a hook/grabber and which hook/grabber to use will depend on the type of writing.

Journalistic Writing (such as magazine and newspaper articles)

Hooks and grabbers are frequently used in journalistic writing. The audience for this type of writing may not be familiar with the topic being discussed, so the hook/grabber helps capture readers’ interest. The hook/grabber might show how the topic connects to the experiences of everyday people. 

Have you ever gone to your favorite local swimming hole, only to find it covered with green, ropey gunk? That gunk is called algae. Swimming in algae can be unpleasant and messy, but science is exposing new reasons to avoid algae: it can be dangerous for our health.

Explanation

This hook/grabber is intended for an audience who does not know very much about algae.

Academic Writing (such as college essays)

This type of writing may not require a hook/grabber. The audience for academic writing is people already knowledgeable about the subject matter, such as your instructor or classmates. A hook or grabber aimed at a general audience  may appear distracting or unprofessional, since the reader already knows a lot about the subject. If you use a hook/grabber for academic writing, it should be something that would interest an expert: an intriguing question or an illuminating example from your research. 

Doctors in California noticed a disturbing trend during the summer of 2015: numerous patients experiencing stomach discomfort after going swimming. The culprit, it turned out, was a previously unstudied toxin released by the algae commonly found in local ponds and lakes.

This hook/grabber assumes that readers are already familiar with and interested in the topic of algae. The writer creates a hook/grabber by choosing one of the most interesting ideas from the essay and placing it at the beginning.

Scientific/Informational reports (such as lab reports and scientific research projects)

Reports in physical or social sciences often open with their main point rather than a hook/grabber. The intended audience is experts in the subject matter; for example, a biology report is written for other biologists and biology students. Scientific reports are often strongest without a hook/grabber.

Researchers at the University of California have discovered a previously unstudied toxin released by the algae commonly found in local ponds and lakes.

9 secrets to telling an attention-grabbing story. Click here for your free guide to writing outstanding essays!

You’ve completed most of your application. Now it’s time to write your personal statement. You want your statement to stand out from the rest, and the way to do this is to tell a compelling story – the tale of your greatest achievements, dreams, and challenges. 

You can tell a compelling story by tying together the following key elements:

Storytelling element #1: Create a killer opening

Start with something that will grab the reader’s attention from the get-go. This will ensure that they keep reading enthusiastically. Usually this is something in a scene or moment in the middle of the action. Starting an essay by saying “One day I decided to watch TV” will probably leave your reader not really caring what happened next, even if that leads to the most important part of the essay. However, starting your essay with “The moment I found the lump, I suspected that my life was about to change forever” will surely draw your reader in.

Storytelling element #2: Set context

‘“It was mid-July 2011. I was a busy consultant at McKinsey’s Chicago office, the proud father of a boy about to turn one, and a generally happy guy in his mid-20s.” 

Context (person, place, time) is important because readers want to understand the story’s circumstances; it helps them relate to the story, even if they’ve never been in that situation.

Storytelling element #3: Introduce the stakes

The above also shows the reader what’s at stake. Stakes further help the reader relate to a story – if there’s little for the main character to lose, then the reader won’t care much about what happens next. If you never figured out the source of the lump and treated it (if necessary), then you wouldn’t have been able to continue your life as a busy consultant, proud father, and generally happy guy. You don’t need huge stakes for people to relate to your story; but effective stakes are something most of us would fight for, like health, a job, our community’s welfare, and the like. 

Storytelling elements #4 and #5: Outline the obstacles AND Demonstrate strength of character

“It was tempting to wish the lump would just go away, and for a few days that was my strategy. I didn’t even tell my wife. But soon I recognized that knowledge is power, and made an appointment with my doctor. Within a week I had a diagnosis: cancer.”

This keeps the reader interested because it brings in two new elements: an obstacle (cancer) and character (your personality traits).

By this point in the story, your readers will know that you are the main character – you’re the consultant, father, etc. But the text above shows your reader what kind of character you are : one who is human (tempted to wish something bad away) but also one who takes action in adverse circumstances (going to the doctor).

Character isn’t only about positive traits. Many essay questions ask you to discuss a time you failed or made a mistake . For those, you need to highlight negative traits upfront (e.g., keeping the lump a secret), but in the context of how you gained insights and ultimately more positive attributes from dealing with their consequences.

Storytelling element #6: Add a twist

So, what happens next in our tale? (Incidentally, a well-told story uses these elements to make readers ask this question again and again, pulling them through the story.) 

“Once I got past the initial shock, I discovered an unexpected challenge: choosing among major surgery, two rounds of chemotherapy, and ‘surveillance’ (i.e. regular testing to see if the cancer was spreading). The options had the exact same survival rate (very high), but very different side-effect profiles. For example, the surgery was associated with potential nerve damage, while the chemo could have resulted in lower lung capacity.”

This part of our story includes a twist and further obstacles. Twists, or surprise turns in stories – in this case, the challenge of choosing treatment – aren’t essential to grad school essays, but they certainly make them more engaging: a teammate with a secret, a client’s abrupt shift in expectations, etc. In this story, the twist also represented an obstacle, in that our courageous subject had to choose from three very different treatments with similar levels of effectiveness.

Storytelling element #7: Detail the process

Here’s what happened next: 

“It was time for some deep research: with my wife’s help and inputs from my oncologist and other doctors, I pored over journal articles and other materials to understand my treatment options and their risks. For example, we learned that the surveillance course could take over five years before one could consider themselves cancer-free.”

Here we can see the process – the exact steps he took to approach the obstacle. Too many applicants leave out their process. You need to tell the adcom what you did, how you did it, and ideally how you engaged others to overcome the challenge as well. Even our cancer story here includes a team element (the wife and doctors).

Storytelling elements #8 and #9: Share the outcome AND Talk about lessons learned

“After weeks of research and deliberation, I opted for two rounds of outpatient chemotherapy. I said goodbye to my hair and hello to needles and nausea. The first week went well. But as I neared the second, my doctor called: the chemo had pushed my white blood cell count too low, compromising my immune system. I would have to wait. For two weeks I avoided raw fruits and vegetables and stayed inside as much as possible. My white blood cell count rose, and I completed the second week of chemo.

“Now, over eight years later, I’m considered cured, a survivor. The only physical residue of my treatment is slightly wavier hair. But the experience reinforced the importance of a proactive approach (I found out most men wait over six months to get lumps checked), of careful due diligence in health and other matters, and of never giving up. I carry those lessons into everything I do. So, I was right: the lump changed my life in a big way; but I never could have guessed how positive those changes would be.”

The last part of our story brings more process (how our survivor made a decision) and another twist (his low white blood cell count), along with the outcome and lessons learned . These last two elements typically tie together: the outcome (surviving cancer) reinforced multiple lessons, as noted above. It’s easy to spend too little (i.e. none) or too much (i.e. paragraphs) time on lessons learned; generally, 1-3 lines gets the job done. 

It’s always recommended to wrap up your story by returning to your opening, to end with a killer ending with a broader theme or key realization or glimpse of the future. 

Our story has just over 400 words, but it has all the important elements.

Raise your hand if you’ve heard that before ^^^. ???‍♀️ (Probably too much if you teach primary kiddos.)

Now that I’ve got your attention, let’s talk ATTENTION GRABBERS ! (See what I did there?)

So, you’re ready to start your lesson, now what? Maybe the class needs some redirection to the next activity, what do you do? Please don’t say, “I’ll just wait.” If you do you’ll ALWAYS have that one student who’s like, “Oh, yeah! I can talk all day!” You’ll end up frustrated even before the lesson begins and nobody’s got time for that.

Attention grabbers are INCREDIBLE tools to have in your teacher bag of tricks!

Teaching tiny humans requires a little FLAIR , so I’ve got 33 UNIQUE , ENGAGING , and QUICK attention grabbers to start your lessons or redirect the class. My class favorites were always #1 , #5 , #13 , #16 , #24 , and #29 !

Attention Grabber 1- “Shark Bait!” 

“Ooh, ha ha!” The teacher calls out “Shark Bait!” Students reply with “ooh, ha ha!” This attention-getter is always a hit with younger kiddos, especially those who adore Nemo and Dory!

2- Doorbell!??

Yes, a doorbell! Amazon has these awesome doorbells that you plug anywhere in your room. Keep the button near you and whenever you need their attention, ring the bell. My class loved ours! 

3- Flat Tire! 

What sounds does a flat tire make? “ SSSHHHHHH .” The teacher  calls out “flat tire!” and students respond with “ssshhhhhh!”

4- “Holy Moly!” 

“Guacamole!” Love tacos and guac? ? This call and response is for you and your class!

Attention Grabber 5- Vanilla Ice Inspired

T- “Ice, Ice!” S- “Baby!”

T- “Alright stop!” S- “Collaborate and Listen!”

6- “Hocus Pocus!” 

“Everybody Focus!” I love me some Hocus Pocus! This is a personal favorite of mine, especially during the fall! ??

7- Whole Brain Teaching

WBT is all about engaging the “whole brain” when teaching. My favorite WBT call and response is “Class class!” and they respond, “yes yes!” The catch is the students MUST respond in the same voice as the teacher. High pitched, low monster tone, whispered, etc. 

8- “Macaroni and Cheese!

”Everybody freeze!” Then they freeze like a statue. 

Attention Grabber 9- Golden Arches! ?

Teacher- “Ba da ba ba ba” Students- “I’m Lovin it!” I prefer Chick-Fil-A but hey, it’s just for FUN and the kids enjoy it! ? 

10- Use a Wind Chime

Think about the soothing sound of a wind chime. Reminds me of being outdoors, birds chirping, gentle breeze, the smell of fresh-cut grass. Now think about how soothing that sound could be as an attention-getter. They hear the sound and stop what they’re doing.

Attention Grabber 11- “1, 2, 3, Eyes on Me!”

Students- “1, 2, eyes on you!” Model for them how they stop, turn to you and listen for instructions.

12- “Peanut Butter!”

“And jelly!” Simple attention grabber, yet still creative!

Attention Grabber 13- Compound words

Why not incorporate a skill into your attention getter with compound words? The teacher says the first word and the students say the second. Any compound word will work as long as you model for them how to stop, look, and listen once they complete the word. Here are some examples:

  • “Apple” “Sauce”
  • “Pop” “Corn”
  • “Hot”  “Dog”
  • “Butter” “Fly”
  • “Milk” “Shake”

14- Ready to Line Up?

How about this one for lining up: 

Teacher- “1, 2” 

Student- “3, 4”

Teacher- “Let’s go”

Student- “Out the door!”

Attention Grabber 15- “If You Can Hear My Voice…

…clap once.” I cannot tell you how many times I’ve used that call and response. It works like magic. The key here is starting at a whisper but not going over a regular talking voice. Kids start to wonder why some are clapping so they stop talking to listen. Boom! 

16- Bologna!

When you introduce this one, make sure you play the commercial. The kids will LOVE it. T- “My bologna has a first name!” S- “It’s O-S-C-A-R!”

Attention Grabber 17- Microphone ?

Sometimes all you need is a unique presentation! Cue, class microphone ! Not only is it different, but the students get excited to use it too! Make sure to model expectations when using it. 

18- “Hands on Top!”

“That means stop!” Model how you expect them to stop, place their hands on their heads and look to you for instructions. 

19- “Who Let the Dogs Out?”

“Who, who, who?” Now the song will be stuck in your head. You’re welcome! ?

20- Clap it Out

Want to include some rhythm in your routine? Clap a rhythm and have the kids repeat it. Change it up often to keep it engaging for the students. 

Attention Grabber 21- “Goodness, Gracious!”

“Great balls of fire?!” 

22- “Red Robin!”

“YUMMMMM!” ? Got a Red Robin in your area? Toss this attention grabber in, I guarantee some of your students will know it!

23- “Spaghetti and…”

“Meatballs” ? Again, I’m hungry now. 

24- “Chicka, Chicka”

“Boom! Boom!” This attention grabber is PERFECT for preschool classrooms that have read this book! My son LOVES Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! 

Attention Grabber 25- Toy Story Inspired

  • T- “To Infinity!” S- “And Beyond!”
  • T- “You’ve got a…” S- “Friend in Me!”

26- “M-I-C-K-E-Y”

“M-O-U-S-E” Be sure to sing it in your BEST Disney voice for dramatic effect! ?

⭐️ Teach older students? These next few are specifically for you! ⭐️

27- Attention to the Queen or King

T- “Hear ye, hear ye!”

S- “All hail the queen!” (or king)

This is great if you teach literature!

28- Teach 5th grade?

T- “Team 5!”

S- “Is alive!”

Attention Grabber 29- Growth Mindset

T- “A Mistake is a Chance”

S- “To Try Again!”

I love this growth mindset-inspired attention grabber!

30- Incorporate tech

T- “Knowledge is POWER. Point to power!”

S- (points to the source of power- SmartBoard, computer, etc.)

Play a quick 5 seconds of their favorite song. Model how they need to respond (get quiet, get out materials, look at you, etc). If they model expectations right away, you’ll let the song continue for a couple more seconds (giving that the song is appropriate for school).

“You Bet!” For older kids, I’ve found that simpler is sometimes better. ?

Attention Grabber 33- Inspired by Songs

These next few are all inspired by popular songs, past and present. Get your best singing voice ready for these, your older students will love them:

  • T- “Feelin’ good…” S- “Like I should” (from Surfaces, Sunday Best)
  • T- “Sweet Caroline!” S- “Ba Ba Ba!” Need I explain? If you’ve EVER been to a sporting event (or bar), chances are, you’ve participated in this one.
  • T- “Dm, Dm, Dm, Dm, Dm, Dm, Dm, Dm” S- “Ay Ay Ay!” (Crazy Train)
  • T- (dramatic) “MAMA!” S- “Oooooo!” (Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody)
  • T- “What is love?” S- “Baby don’t hurt me!” (Haddaway)

⚠️ Remember, this is a management tool to help control the chaos that comes from teaching tiny humans. If you teach middle school and up, they might not be tiny humans, but they’re still kids. Have fun with it and make sure you MODEL , MODEL , MODEL . 

If you try to incorporate an attention-getter without setting the expectations and modeling, there’s a good chance it won’t be successful.

Good Attention Grabbers for Autobiographical Narrative

A good hook pulls the reader into your essay from the first paragraph.

Unlike analytic or argumentative essays, an autobiographical narrative does not require a thesis statement in its first paragraph. It must, however, grab the reader’s attention and convince him to keep reading. A "hook" is an opening that grabs the reader’s attention and pulls him into the narrative.

1 Use Dialogue

Beginning your autobiographical narrative with dialogue is an excellent way to pull your reader into the story immediately. Michael Crichton’s essay “Sharks” begins, “‘Have you dived in the pass yet?’ the proprietor of the hotel asked the first evening, when we told him that we liked the diving. ‘No,’ we said, ‘not yet.’ ‘Ah,’ he said, ‘You must dive the pass. It is the most exciting dive on Rangiroa.’” This beginning creates a scene in the reader’s mind and introduces questions that will keep the reader intrigued -- such as why the pass is the most exciting place to dive and what that has to do with the essay’s title, “Sharks.”

2 Establish Character

Emily Carr begins her essay “Time” with a description of her father, a “stern straight man” whose “look was direct, though once in a while a little twinkle forced its way through.” Many autobiographical narratives focus on character -- of either the author or someone important in her life. A character description can make a great hook, particularly in cases like Carr’s, where the character has something contradictory or compelling about him, like a “stern straight man” with a twinkle in his eye.

3 Open With a Shocking Fact or Statement

Dick Gregory opens his essay “Shame” with the statement “I never learned hate at home, or shame. I had to go to school for that.” This grabs the reader’s attention by being unexpected, but it also raises further questions, such as how school taught Gregory hate and shame. Though beginning with a shocking fact or statement can be very effective at grabbing the reader’s attention, make sure that you are not shocking merely to shock; if your hook doesn’t connect with the narrative that follows, your reader will feel cheated.

4 Begin With the End

Carl Sandburg begins “Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years” with a description of Lincoln’s death. Though Sandburg’s “Abraham Lincoln” is a biographical narrative, the same technique can work well in autobiography. Begin with the end of your story, particularly if the ending is strange or surprising, and then back up to the story’s beginning. Even though the reader already knows the ending, she will keep reading to see how things turned out that way.
