Raw meat and dairy products like cheese should be avoided as they are very harmful.

On Soseki’s Bitingly Critical Novel, I Am a Cat

A comic evocation of the author's deep pessimism about his own humanity.

In December 1904, Natsume Sōseki’s creative energy geysered, bearing him upward in the space of 16 months into the empyrean of Japanese writers who were taken seriously. His output during the first act of his literary career went beyond prolific: even as he was serializing his first novel, I Am a Cat ( Wagahai wa neko aru ),   he produced 11 shorter works of fiction, two of which, Botchan and Kusamakura ,   are among his shorter masterpieces. Once he had taken up his pen (a quill pen inlaid with mother-of-pearl that he had brought home from England), he wrote incessantly, before dinner, after school, and after dinner until late at night and, according to Kyōko, with great pleasure and small effort.

From the outset, Sōseki’s fiction was against the grain. To be sure, the “I-novel,” the product of writers in thrall to the notion that only the confession of actual incidents in their lives, the more shameful the bet ter,   deserved consideration as art was still inchoate when Sōseki began I Am a Cat . Not until 1907 did Tayama Katai inaugurate the genre with his novella Bedclothes ( Futon ). But even before Bedclothes , writers in the ascendant Naturalist school, influenced by Guy de Maupassant and Émile Zola, among others, were basing their fiction on material from their personal lives. Their work tended to be egocentric, dominated by the protagonist-cum-author’s point of view, unmediated reality serving as a substitute for artfully created verisimilitude. Sōseki deplored what he called “the gray skies of Naturalism.” He was not objecting to the use of autobiographical material in fiction. Like most writers, he incorporated material from his own life in everything he wrote, although he was artful, never literal. He was critical of what he perceived in naturalist fiction as an absence of intellectual interest and emotional power that resulted from portraying reality unalloyed.

I Am a Cat was originally a short story introduced by Sōseki to a reading group at his house organized by the publisher of Hototogisu , Takahama Kyoshi. Kyōko prepared a meal, and the participants, most of them younger writers a number of whom became Sōseki’s disciples, read their work aloud and critiqued it. Because Sōseki was a clumsy reader, Takahama read the story for him, and he joined the others in laughing at his own invention. Takahama wanted to publish the story in his magazine and suggested a number of emendations, including changing the title from “Cat Chronicle”—a stray kitten had just at this time found its way into the Natsume household—to “I Am a Cat.”

When the story appeared in the January 10, 1905, issue of Hototogisu , readers clamored for more, delighted by its wit and lightness of touch in contrast to the dogged earnestness of naturalist fiction, and Sōseki was happy to oblige . A “ sequel ” appeared in the February issue , and a “ sequel to the sequel ” came out in April . The June 10 continuation was subtitled “Installment 4 ,” indicating that Sōseki had resolved to produce a full-length book . Chapters followed in July and October . Installments  seven  and  eight  were published together on New Year’s Day , 1906 ; installment  nine  was published in March ; installment  ten  in April , and the concluding chapter in August .

In mid-October 1905 , Okura shoten published the first five chapters as I Am a Cat , V olume 1 . The first printing sold out in 20 days . By that time, Sōseki’s students were calling him “ Professor Cat.” Volume 2 was published by Hattori shoten in November 1906. The book was designated V olume 2 of 3 ( 中編 ), indicating that more was to come , possibly wishful thinking on the part of the publisher . But Sōseki never looked back . The previous month , the same publisher released a slim volume of the first two chapters translated into English by K . Ando and revised by K . Natsume.

I Am a Cat is a mordantly comic evocation of Sōseki’s deep pessimism about his own humanity and indeed about humankind in general . The feline narrator, an alley cat who has taken up residence in the home of an English professor named Sneeze , is increasingly dismayed by the conversations at the heart of the book between the professor and his cronies , who pay him frequent visits in his study . They include a doctor of aesthetics whose name means something like “ bewildered ” ( Meitei, translated as Waverhouse), a fatuous pedant at work on a “ history of hanging ” who is polishing a glass ball in hopes of eventually producing a perfect sphere ten years down the line ( the resemblance to Casaubon is  intended), a sycophant vassal of the wealthy family down the street, a former houseboy, and a “new playwright” working on the “haiku theater.” The cat speaks with Sōseki’s voice, now bitingly critical, now cynically amused. He concludes early on that “humans are selfish and immoral” but gradually augments his understanding:

The important thing in life, whether we speak of animals or humankind, is knowing the self. If humans would only learn to know themselves, they’d deserve more respect than any cat. I might even feel uncomfortable about treating them as caricatures in that case and put aside this poison pen of mine. Alas, . . . it appears they know as little about themselves as they do about the sizes of their own noses.

The first two installments include some charming socializing between the narrator and other felines in the neighborhood, a giant named Black who belongs to a rickshaw man and sounds like a Cockney chimney sweep, and a flirtatious little tabby who calls him “sensei,” presumably because he lives with one. But beginning with the third installment , the cat devotes most of his time to critiquing the palaver in his master’s study, venturing outside only occasionally to spy on the family down the street, the wealthy Kanedas.

A work of art need not have a model, but critics have been looking for one since I Am a Cat first appeared. As early as 1906, the father of German literature studies in Japan and Sōseki’s friend, that same Fujishiro Teinosuke who was supposed to have chaperoned him on his voyage home from England, introduced Japanese readers to E. T. A. Hoffman’s unfinished Lebansansichten des Katers Murr ( The Life of Tomcat Murr, (1820–1822) ) and identified similarities and differences between the feline “autobiography” by the German master of fantasy and horror and Sōseki’s novel. Neither Fujishiro nor subsequent scholars have been able to verify that Sōseki had actually read Hoffman, which was available   only in German at the time, but he might have. In a diary entry late in 1915,   he mentions in passing that he is reading the German translation of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment . Certainly he knew about Hoffman’s book, since near the end of I Am a Cat , he includes a reference:

It has now been more than two years since I have been living as a cat in this human world. I have always considered myself a creature of  unequaled discrimination and perceptivity, but recently a fellow feline called Tomcat Murr abruptly appeared on the stage with a great show of vitality and enthusiasm and caught me off guard. When I looked into this carefully, I learned that he had in fact died one hundred years ago and had been impelled by a spasm of curiosity to journey all the way from Hades as a ghost to give me a scare.

Apart from the feline narrators, the novels have little in common: I Am a Cat is a commentary on humankind delivered by a cat; Tomcat Murr is the autobiography of the totally anthropomorphized narrator (and, crazily, of a second unrelated figure whose story unfolds on pages interspersed).

If a model must be found, a more likely candidate would be Lawrence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy , which Sōseki certainly had read. It is hard to imagine him reaching the end of Sterne’s hulking monster in English—no Japanese version was yet available—and one tends to be skeptical until reading the essay on the novel Sōseki published in 1899 when he was 30, the year before he went to London, and seeing how comprehensively he has grasped the book and how appositely he quotes from it. The essay reveals a facet of Sōseki’s genius, that he was a heroic reader even in English. He likens Tristram to a “sea cucumber distinguished by no form or shape, no beginning or end, no head or tail.” But this is not intended as a derogation. He continues, “The work that ensured a place   in history for the compulsively perverse and morbidly neurasthenic Lawrence Sterne was the compulsively perverse and morbidly neurasthenic Tristram Shandy ; no other novel plays men for fools and clowns so extravagantly, no other makes us cry so hard or laugh so loud.”

In an interview he gave in May 1909, on the occasion of George Mer edith’s death, when asked whether Meredith’s novels had influenced him, Sōseki replied, “Every book I have ever read carefully lives somewhere inside me and influences me in some way or other.” In this case, to an extent that exceeds several explicit allusions to it, Tristram Shandy is present in I Am a Cat . The tone and flavor of the satire, the digressive nature of the structure that defeats a narrative story line, the action consisting   in the interruption of the action, and the self-lacerating humor, all these are evocative of Sterne’s masterwork.

Stylistically, I Am a Cat is a gallimaufry of elements: classical Chinese, classical Japanese, contemporary vernacular across a range of timbres from bourgeois refinement to “downtown” vulgarity, and a vast  field of allusion to Western sources from the Greeks to 18th- and 19th-century English literature. Among the pleasures of the work is the repeated yoking together in any given passage of an assortment of allusions from Du Fu, the English poet Gray, Beowolf , and a contemporary play on words reminiscent of Cockney rhyming slang. Elsewhere, we find references to Rabelais, Robert Louis Stevenson, Victor Hugo, Chinese learning, Aristotle, Izumi Kyōka, Tsubouchi Shōyō, Shakespeare, Henry James, Meredith, and many others. Remarkably, the elements that comprise Sōseki’s style are still unblended in this first novel, visible on the page to be identified and analyzed. Here, more distinctly than ever again, we can see Sōseki creating an unmistakable voice uniquely his own from the range of disparate elements he commands.

I have a pet cat and her name is Hermoine. She is white in color. We brought her home when she was only 8 weeks old kitten. Now, she is 1 year old. I love to play with her. We have a ball for her that she likes to chase around the house. Most of the time she is playing, she likes to eat and sleep otherwise. When I wake up in the morning, I look for Hermoine. And every night before going to bed, I pet her. I love my cat and now, she an important part of our lives.

I have a pet cat. His name is Snowbell and he is white in colour. We brought Snowbell home when he was around 8 weeks old and now, he is 1.5 years old. Pets are very lovable but having them brings a lot of responsibilities. We take very good care of Snowbell and feed him twice a day. We make sure that he gets enough nutrients in his meals. My cat’s name is Stuart. He is a Maine Coon cat that is famous for its furry looks. Stuart is very dear to me. His walk is majestic, and he loves to hop around the house while carrying all his grace in his golden fur. Although very majestic, when he sleeps, his postures are funny to look at. 

Most of the time he stays at home playing with the ball we got him. But at times he also goes in the backyard for a stroll. He loves watching the birds from the window in my room. I have always wanted a pet cat and when my dad brought home Stuart, I was the happiest. He came home curdled like a white snowball. The cats of his breed live in cold climates, hence we have to ensure that our house is airconditioned properly, especially at night. Now, because they are habitual to such cold climates, the fur of Stuart is amazingly fluffy. We also have to take extra precautions so that Stuart doesn’t feel too much heat. 

Cats require a lot of attention and care. We take care of Stuart’s meals like we would of a baby. We feed him twice a day and make sure that he gets all the necessary nutrients through his meals. We also bathe him twice a week. Another important thing that we made sure of is that he got all his vaccinations done on time. And periodically we visit the vet to make sure that he is healthy. Although domesticated, he still likes to chase around birds. When some pigeons sit on the window, he chases them away. 

Everyone in our family love loves Stuart. We all take care of him and love him with all our hearts. He is an important member of our family.

Most of my relatives also think that that is funny because their pet cats have names like ‘Fluffy.’ I wanted to name my cat Garfield, as the comic because I love reading Garfield comics, but now his name is Peter.

Peter is a white cat with patches of fading black fur here are there. Around his face, there is a shadow-like patch of black fur, in the middle of which you can see Peter’s big, bright, and round blue eyes. Through the patch, you can also see his white whiskers in a sticking out fashion. Even Peter’s ears, paws, and tail are black, while the rest of his body is covered in soft white fur. This color patching of black and white is the common characteristic of all Siamese cats.

Peter is a very clean cat who knows how to clean up after himself when he has to go to the bathroom. His kitty litter box is kept in the bathroom in my house so that he can be just as independent as his humans, i.e., my family and me. After he finishes his bathroom business, he even covers it up with the litter.

Most cats are known to prefer to be on their own, being independent, etc. However, Peter is the opposite of that. He loves to get affection and attention and playing with everyone who wants to. His favorite person to play with is my father because he gives Peter lots of treats. Yes, Peter gets a lot of treats along with his two meals a day, which is why he is one of the fattest cats I have ever seen. His fatness makes him very cute, chubby, and fun to play with, and he is the best cuddle buddy.

Another way that my pet cat Peter is very different from other cats is that he likes to play Fetch. My aunt bought him a small squeaky toy, which, when we throw it for him, fetches it and brings it back. He also likes to go for walks with my mom and me in the evenings and does not hate it when we put a collar and leash to take him out. My friends told me that their cats really hate when they do that, but Peter likes to go out like that.

I really love my pet cat Peter because he is always there to keep me company when I don’t want to be alone. When I’m doing my homework or working on a project, watching TV, playing video games, or anything else, Peter comes and sits down with me to keep me company. I was surrounded by other cats, each with their own unique beauty and talent, but I stood out, my grace and mystery captivating the hearts of all who saw me.

As I competed in the show, I discovered that there was more to life than just beauty and grace. I learned the importance of friendship, of working together and supporting one another, and I formed bonds with the other cats that would last a lifetime. And in the end, I emerged as the winner, my grace and mystery earning me the title of “Best in Show.”

But my journey didn’t stop there. I continued to travel the world, showcasing my beauty and grace, and inspiring others to embrace their own unique qualities. And I discovered that there was something special about being a cat, something that set us apart from all the other creatures in the world. I discovered that we had a unique perspective, a way of seeing the world that was all our own, and I learned to use this perspective to tell my story and to share my experiences with others.

I am a Cat, and my story is one of grace and mystery, of competition and friendship, and of embracing the qualities that make us who we are. I have lived a life of beauty and elegance, and I have learned that there is no limit to what a cat can achieve. And as I sit here, washing my paw with grace, I know that my journey has only just begun, and that there is still so much more for me to discover and experience.

A satire on human foibles from the standpoint of a cat, I Am a Cat is one of the most original novels of the Wagahai wa Neko de aru , one of the best loved works by the Japanese writer Natsume Sōseki (1867–1916). The work chronicles the adventures of an alley cat as he recounts with disarming candor the details of his life story. Saved from starvation by de facto adoption into a middle-class family, the cat proceeds to comment in a learned and quizzical manner on his dealings with humans. Through him we meet various eccentric and engaging personalities. Mr. Sneaze, the head of the household, is a high school English teacher and also an exaggerated caricature of the author. He is lazy, stubborn, dilettantish (dabbling in poetry, drawing, and music), and greedy. He buys expensive foreign books, but his main use for them is narcotic, for once he starts reading he will invariably fall asleep.

We also meet the spirited Mrs. Sneaze, who fights a running battle with her husband over his masculine and pigheaded ways. From there the circle widens to include the friends who gather at the Sneaze household to while away the time with food and conversation. These include the scientist Coldmoon, a former student of Sneaze; the layabout Waverhouse, an aesthete who loves to make up tall tales to poke fun at pretentious people; and the poet Beauchamp.

The novel has no formal, fully developed plot or structure. The primary plot sequence concerns the possibility of marriage between Coldmoon and Opula Goldfield, the daughter of a prosperous businessman who lives nearby. At the close of the novel, Opula’s hand is won by the careerist Sampei; Coldmoon, coming to his senses, marries a girl from his hometown. Nevertheless, the essence of the book lies not in the development of story but in the humor and aptness of the cat’s mordant observations of social conditions and human relationships. The satire is sometimes biting and acerbic, as for instance when Sneaze and Waverhouse make fun of the new acquisitive, money-grubbing ways symbolized by the Goldfields. At other times wit is preferred, as when the cat muses on the irrationality of human actions compared to the superiority of cats, although this is quickly countermanded by his own misadventures when he bites into a piece of sticky rice cake and struggles to free himself from its demon clutches. We also get to see slices of Meiji life (the 45- year reign of the Meiji emperor from 1868 to 1912, during which time Japan modernized as a country). These images are presented with affectionate good humor: An episode in which a robber steals into the Sneaze house, finds nothing of value, and runs away with a box of yams is a skilled demonstration in the use of bathos. Another squabble between Sneaze and high school students underscores the generation gap: The students like to throw balls into his garden to goad him into anger—predictably he does not disappoint them.

In place of plot, the author offers a profusion of witty conversations between the protagonists at the Sneaze household; in fact, much of the novel’s interest comes from these conversations. With Waverhouse leading the way, the talk moves from reminiscence about student days to the details of ancient Greek athletic contests. Other topics include the origins and functions of noses, the possibility of new artistic genres (something called a “haiku-play” is facetiously discussed at one point), 14 different ways to use a pair of scissors, the dynamics of death by hanging, the direction of human civilization, and the correct way to eat buckwheat noodles.

While the satirical elements reflect the influence of Jonathan Swift, the digressive, irreverent, and occasionally self-referential asides in these conversations reflect the influence of Laurence Sterne’s visionary novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1759). As the preeminent scholar of English literature of his time, Sōseki knew both authors well. He belonged to that generation that was the first to receive the new Western-style education and also the last to have a traditional Japanese one. Thus, the novel is peppered with a heady mixture of references to Oliver Goldsmith, William Thackeray, Thomas Carlyle, Socrates, Aristotle, Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as a number of Chinese and Japanese poets, Confucian sages, and Zen Buddhist philosophers.

The episodic structure adumbrated above also reflects the book’s publishing history. What was to later become the first chapter of I Am a Cat appeared in a literary journal in January 1905 as a story. However strange the idea, a talking cat proved so popular that Sōseki went on to write 10 more chapters, eventually producing an enormous work running more than 600 pages in its English translation. Over a century later, the novel still never fails to appeal or to engage; all in all, it is an impressive testimony to Sōseki’s immense learning and comic talent.

Description

This English version of 吾輩は猫である (Wagahai-wa neko de aru: I Am a Cat), Chapters I and II, written by Natsume Sōseki, pseudonym of Natsume Kinnosuke (1867–1916), and translated by Kan-ichi Ando (1878-1924), was published by Hattori Shoten, Tokyo, in 1906.

It begins: "I am a cat; but as yet I have no name." Its sardonic feline narrator describes his origins, his settlement in the household of a Meiji teacher-intellectual, and the goings-on and conversations among the cats and humans about the neighborhood. Of the men he concludes: "They are miserable creatures in the eyes of a cat."

Japanese novelist Natsume Sōseki studied literature in England and became professor at Tokyo Imperial University. The success of his stories, beginning with "I Am a Cat," launched a successful career that produced 22 novels, including Botchan , Kokoro , and Light and Darkness.

I have a white coloured, soft and furry pet cat. It is a Himalayan Cat. These cats are known for their soft furry coats and that is what attracted me too.

Since I am a single child, my parents decided to get me a pet. They asked me if I wanted a dog or a cat and I instantly chose the latter. My father took me to a pet shop and my heart went pounding for this cute little white kitten with grey ears. We brought it home and since then it has been my best friend. I have named it Rosie.

Rosie is there with us since the last two years and has become a part of our family. I love playing with it. I play with it in the house and also take it out in the park every evening. I bathe it twice a month with the help of my mother. Bathing sessions are super fun for me as well as Rosie. My mother makes it a point to comb Rosie’s furry coat every day. We have a separate set of combs, brushes, shampoo and soaps for Rosie. We also take good care of her diet. We bring home special cat food for her. I love my pet cat.

Introduction

My pet cat, Jersy is a Maine Coon Cat. It is dark brown and black in colour. She is quite active and playful. She spends most of her time with me and is therefore more affectionate towards me than any of my other family member.

Why we brought Home a Pet Cat?

Many of my friends and neighbours had pets at their home and I also longed to have one. I often told my mother to get home a pup or a kitten and she always dismissed my wish saying she doesn’t have time to look after it.

When my brother went to the hostel for higher studies, I felt quite lonely. My father went to the office and my mother was engrossed in the household tasks most of the times. I did not have anyone to play and felt the need of having a pet all the more. I again requested my parents to get me a pet. Looking at how lonely I had grown ever since my brother had gone to the hostel, they decided to fulfil my wish. I was overjoyed at hearing this. It is then that Jersy came into our lives. It has been with us for over four years now.

My Pet Cat is Playful Yet Disciplined

Jersy is extremely fond of playing while at the same time it is also quite well-behaved. Many cats run around the house breaking things. However, Jersy makes sure she does not cause any such damage. She also takes instructions. My mother serves her lunch at sharp every day. Jersy goes and sits near her feeder around the same time every day. She finishes her food and makes sure it does not spill around.

Jersy has won the heart of all my family members. She awaits my return from the school every afternoon and is delighted to see me back. I am also eager to meet her. We love and enjoy each other’s company.

I have a pet Siamese cat. I got it as a present from my mother on my 7 th birthday. I had always loved cats dearly and often expressed my wish to pet one. My mother gave me a pleasant surprise by fulfilling it. I have named it Misty. It is cream in colour with grey shade around its ears. It has a fine furry coat that renders beauty to it.

Feeding Misty

Misty is a foodie. It loves eating fish. My mother especially goes to the market twice a week to get fresh fish for my adorable cat. Misty does not only eat raw fish but also relishes fried fish that we often prepare for ourselves. Buying cat food is a fun activity for me. There are many options to choose from and I always accompany my parents to the supermarket to choose different packs of cat food.

Misty loves cat food as much as it loves fish. It especially loves cat food when we mix it with milk. It also loves gulping bowls of plain milk. Milk is something that it can never say no to.

Besides, fish, cat food and milk, Misty also has an eye on what we eat and often demands the same in her own unique way. I love sharing my food with it. Bread dipped in milk and chapatti with butter are some of the other things it relishes. My mother is very particular about giving it food at the right time.

Cleanliness and Hygiene

Siamese cats look beautiful however it takes a bit of an effort to maintain their look. Me and my mother conduct Misty’s bathing session once a month and it is complete fun. My mother also makes sure she combs its coat twice a week to remove dead hair and ensure her hygiene. We also brush her teeth once a week. In winters, we cover it with a coat to protect it from cold.

I love playing with Misty but we mostly play indoors only. When I take it out, I mostly carry it in my arms to protect it from the dirt and dust outside that may cause allergy.

Misty gelled along well almost immediately with me as well as my family members. We had set up a small cat house for it at a cosy corner in our house but it sneaked into my bed the very first day it came home and since then it sleeps besides me. I love spending time with Misty. We are extremely fond of each other.

I have a Persian cat as a pet. We call it Molly. I had seen one such cat at my neighbour’s place and just loved the way it looked. I also wanted to pet one. I told my father about the same and he agreed to bring one home. Molly is 5 years old and has been with us since it was just 2 months. We are all extremely fond of her and she loves us all too. She is particularly fond of me.

The Features of My Pet Cat

• Molly is pure white in colour.
• It has long hair that are super soft and a delight to touch. However, its furry hair requires a lot of grooming. It needs to be combed gently every day.
• It has a small, round face and a snub nose.
• Its cheeks are chubby and it has small rounded ears.
• Its eyes are big and full of innocence.
• It is generally quiet however it also enjoys playing.
• More than anything it loves sitting in my lap.

Molly has a Pleasant Disposition

Persian cats are considered to be the most beautiful cats in the world and Molly is no exception. It is a treat for the eyes. Her behaviour is as good as her looks. She is very warm and friendly. She did not take long to mingle with me and my family members. She does not detest the entry of anyone in the home. However, she is often quite indifferent towards our guests. She creeps into a quiet corner in our house when some unfamiliar person arrives.

My mother never wanted to keep a cat as a pet however she is glad that we brought Molly home. She has grown quite fond of this tiny little creature over the time just like my father and grandparents. She takes care of all her needs.

Molly’s Grooming and Feeding

Molly has long white hair which make her look beautiful but we also require taking care of it. We make sure we bathe her once a week to keep her hair clean and tidy. I love shopping for Molly’s bathing products. My mother conducts her bathing sessions and I also love helping her with it. Molly remains quiet during this time and lets us clean it thoroughly.

We comb its hair everyday to keep them smooth. It is done with the help of a special wide-tooth comb. Molly loves it when my mother runs comb through her hair. It sits in her lap to get it done.

Molly loves eating fish. We give her fish twice a week. On other days, my mother gives her cat food. We have fixed her lunch and dinner time and serve her food at the same time every day. Molly also loves having milk. She finishes her bowl of milk very quickly and often demands for more.

Molly is an inseparable part of our family. I love spending time with it. We also take her along on outings. She is well-behaved and thus it doesn’t seem difficult to take her along on holidays.

I have a black coloured cat as a pet. We call it Brenda. It has short hair and a glossy coat. It is five years old and has been with us ever since it was born. It loves having milk and bread. We treat it with fish occasionally and it simply loves its taste. Brenda is very playful and loving.

How Brenda (my pet cat) Became a Part of My Life?

I had always been a big admirer of cats. I always thought that I would pet a couple of cats when I grow old. However, I had never planned of keeping one as a pet in my childhood years. Keeping Brenda as a pet was not planned.

My mother always kept a bowl of water in the garden to quench the thirst of birds and animals during summers. Besides a number of sparrows and pigeons, a few cats also came and drank water from that bowl quite often. One of these cats gave birth to four kittens under our cooler that was kept in the garden. The cat as well as kittens stayed at that place for around ten days. We placed a bowl of milk to feed them every day.

One morning we saw that the cat and three kittens had gone and only a black coloured kitten had been left behind. I kept some food and milk for it. The cat never came back to take its kitten and it continued to live under the cooler. I and my brother soon grew quite fond of it. We decided to pet it. We took permission from my father and got its vaccinations done. My mother allowed it inside the house after the vaccinations were done and it became a part of our family.

Special Cat House in My Garden

As much as I had fancied having a cat, I had been equally enthusiastic about setting up a beautiful cat house at my place. I often saw pictures of cat houses on the internet and wished to install one of those at home some day. So, when we decided to keep Brenda, I expressed my wish to bring her a beautiful cat house. I already had a good idea about the different types of cat houses available in the market. I sat with my brother to shortlist the best one for our loving Brenda. It was delivered to our place in two days and we placed it under a shady tree in our garden. Brenda was quite excited to see her new shelter. It loves the colourful house and enjoys sitting inside it for hours.

Black Cats are not Ominous

Many people consider black cats are ominous. People usually do not like to pet black cats. This is not only because these are considered ominous but also because these cats don’t look as beautiful as the white and fawn ones. My mother was also quite sceptic about keeping Brenda initially. However, I convinced her and she agreed.

It has been five years that Brenda has been with us and we have not faced any uncanny experience as we should have going by the myths. This is a proof that black cats are not ominous. We must not disregard them because of the myths that have been around for centuries. Black cats need our love and affection as much as any other cats.

Brenda came into our life by chance but is now an inseparable part of our family. I and my brother are especially fond of it. Brenda eagerly awaits our return from the school every day and also looks forward to our holidays. It seems quite delighted and cheerful during our holidays. We love her company too.

“I Am a Cat” – Natsume Soseki – Review

“i am a cat” – natsume sōseki – book review.

I Am a Cat  (吾輩は猫である / Wagahai wa Neko de Aru ) is an interesting and unique story by Natsume Sōseki, one of the pillars of Japanese literature. The first chapter was published in the January 1905 issue of the literary magazine Hototogisu (Cuckoo). Sōseki had not intended the work be any longer than that single short story, but the editor was so pleased with its success that he persuaded Sōseki to write further instalments. The subsequent chapters were published in Hototogisu  throughout 1905 and 1906. It was subsequently published in a three volume form with Volume 1 appearing in October 1905, Volume 2 in November 1906, and Volume 3 in May 1907. The story is narrated by the cat of a Tokyo school teacher. The cat, who is never given a name, comments whimsically on the follies of his master, and on humanity in general, from his lofty position as the family cat. “I am a cat. As yet I have no name,” are the opening few sentences of the book and many Japanese people can quote them by heart.

“I am a Cat” – a short summary

A frustrating read….

I want to say upfront that, at times, I found it a frustrating read. It is social satire of the Meiji Era, a society that I’m so far removed from and don’t know a lot about. In the past, when I’ve read social satire, I’ve been introduced to it through study. My majors at university were English Literature and Classical Literature (Greek and Roman), so I had the opportunity to study a lot of great social satire: Euripides, the Greek Tragedian, Johnathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Alexander Pope, Jane Austen and others . As well as having lectures on these works, the editions that I read were annotated explaining the way in which those works were critiquing the society of the day.

The importance of contextual knowledge

I felt there was something i was missing, it’s very episodic.

The other difficult thing about the text is that it’s very episodic. It was never intended to be a serialised novel, each chapter stands alone as a collection of satirical witticisms about Meiji Era society. So there is no narrative thread to pull a reader through the story. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing in itself, when it’s together with the feeling that you’re not quite sure what the author is trying to say, it can easily become tiresome.

Why you should read it

Human beings tend to keep diaries.

Another reason that I Am a Cat is worth reading is Soseki’s descriptiveness about what is being observed and the cat’s playful commentary on it. Musing on humans’ tendency to keep diaries in order to display their own true characters which they hide from the rest of the world, the cat says:

But among cats both our four main occupations (walking, standing, sitting, and lying down) and such incidental activities as excreting waste are pursued quite openly… Had I the time to keep a diary, I’d use that time to better effect; sleeping on the veranda.

On teachers

Now, though teachers are not actually kept on chains, they are very effectively shackled by their salaries. They can be teased in perfect safety. They won’t resign or use their teeth on their pupils. Had they sufficient spunk to resign, they would not originally have allowed themselves to sink into the slavery of teaching.
