How to write a successful “Dear Host Family”-letter

Straight from your first draft of the Dear Host Family letter, there is one very important thing you should keep in mind: The letter to the Host Family needs to be kept as short as possible! If you write paragraph after paragraph you will risk that the Host Family close your letter before reading it all as it feels too time intensive to read the whole letter.

You need to attract the Host Family’s attention with your accurately worded letter, describing your personality and ambitions in a summary instead of a long story. Unfortunately, this also means that there is not much space for creativity because you need to list important things about yourself. Hence, this will already take some space in your letter.

Therefore, you should really think about reasons why you would be the best match for this (or any) Host Family. If possible, try to personalise the letter matching the prospective Host Family’s situation and constellation. However, we believe that this is very often impossible as you might not have much information about the Host Family to whom your Host Family letter will be forwarded.

Here is a Dear Family letter example – step by step

We have compiled a list of steps and an Dear Host Family examples letter to help you to write a successful Dear Host Family letter. The tricky thing about Au Pair applications is, that the number of applicants is normally quite big. So you need to find a way to stand out, without necessary just write more information.

The very first sentences are very important and you should phrase these deliberately.

What should the first paragraph of a Dear Host Family letter contain?

The first paragraph should include a description about yourself and what you are currently doing. Write informative, bring some examples but keep it short.

“Dear Host Family, thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

My name is Claudia and I am 19 years old. You surely get a lot of these letters from prospective Au Pairs, but rest assured, you will not regret to read about my reasons why I want to become your Au Pair.

I am currently living with my mother, my 12 year old sister and two dogs in Hamburg, which is a big city in the north of Germany. My dad lives with his new wife and son half an hour away but I see him regularly. At the moment, I am in the last throes of my A levels and I will graduate in June. I can’t wait to explore more from the world and other countries afterwards!

In my spare time, I love to play tennis. During the last three summer holidays, I helped at a kids’ summer tennis camp and was assigned to teach the youngest group of children the basics of tennis. In between the short exercise lessons I was responsible for entertaining the children and we had lots of fun playing hide and seek, doing face paintings, colouring ins and many more games.

I also love reading, especially English novels. One of my favorite authors is Ken Follet and I can’t wait to have access to an English Library to browse through all the literature I like!”

How to convince the Host Family that I am the perfect match?

If you have some information about the Host Families receiving your letter, for instance age and gender of the children or the location they live, you should definitely take advantage of this information to personalise your letter. You could for example highlight some childcare experience that you have with children of this age (if you have – never make up a story or experience that you don’t have!). This will show the Host Family that you make the effort to write individual Dear Host Family letters.

On our page about Au Pairs we have a list of questions that you should ask yourself to decide if Au Pairing is something you will enjoy. “Enjoy” means not only for a couple of days or weeks but for months as well. If you respond to some of these questions in this paragraph of your letter about your personal choice of becoming an Au Pair, you would reassure the Host Family that your decision has been taken thoroughly.

If you have experience with children or even better with child care, this is the topic you should focus on next. Additionally, Host Parents like to read about either your experience of living abroad or, if you have never lived abroad, some reassuring sentences about why you think living abroad would be no problem for you. Giving an outlook on how living will be with you like (the easier the better) will be really helpful.

“I would love to become your next Au Pair because I love children and enjoy spending time with them. I am prepared and I am well aware of the fact that being like a big sister for your children comes along with responsibilities for them and it will not always be just play and fun. My calm and patient personality will help me to master more difficult situations for instance when the kids are tired or don’t want to listen to me.

I expect that in the first couple of days I will be exhausted at night because I guess taking care of children the whole time can be tiring. But I am sure that I will adapt to the new tasks and daily routine quickly and become a big help for you.

Living with me is really easy as I am not a demanding person. I do respect that the house is your house and that I have follow your house rules. If something works not quite as it should, I prefer to talk instead of ignoring things.

I have never spent longer time abroad except from holidays but I am used to not seeing either my dad or my mom for one or two weeks so I don’t think I will become particular homesick. And from the UK it is just a short flight home to Germany in case I wanted to visit my family in case you don’t need me on a weekend 🙂

I am really curious to hear all about you and your children. The information I have read so far sounds really interesting. I hope you like my letter and I can’t wait to hear back from you.

Thank you for reading my letter and kind regards, Claudia”

If you try to follow the summarized ten easy steps below to write a convincing Dear Host Family letter we are sure that you will get lots of Skype requests and then you can choose, which Host Family you like to get to know better.

10 easy steps to write a successful Dear Host Family letter

Time needed:  1 hour

Introduce yourself briefly without going too much into detail. Include personal facts like: Age, country of origin and current home, who belongs to your household, what you are doing at the moment, your hobbies, your language skills

Think carefully about the question, why do you want to be an Au Pair and explain the reasons

Describe how living with you would look like and include words like: honest, open, respectful, reliable, discrete, affectionate, dedicated, patient, responsible, trustworthy

Which ever information you provide, prove them through examples

If you have ever spent time abroad with or without your family, outline this experience

Put the child care affinity before others! That you love to travel or explore different cultures is nice, but should not be your main motivation (at least you should not write that down if that is your main motivation)

Don’t overdo it with how great your child minding is: You will win more sympathy if you can admit things, like you expect to be exhausted at night in the first few days

Add pictures of yourself – ideally with children or at least animals: Pictures with a big smile!

Avoid using numerous emojis throughout your letter. One here or there is ok though

If you have preferences for the area, you should name it already as you don’t want to waste your time or the Host Family’s time for nothing.

And last but not least: If you know the native language of the Host Family at least a bit and if that is not English, it makes a good impression if you write some parts in their language. If this is not possible, write in English.

Ask someone to proof-read your letter

For every Dear Host Family letter written in English we recommend to ask someone with really good English language skills to proof-read your letter because spelling or grammar mistakes can easily be avoided.

How to write a letter to your future host family as an exchange student?

Many students are wondering how they should write their host family letter as part of the application process to be an exchange student abroad ! Here are some tips to write a good host family letter .

Student letter host family

Your High School Study Abroad organization requires you to write a letter to your future host family. How long should it be?

Not too short, not too long! We advise future exchange students to take great care while working on their host family letter. The host families will carefully read what you have written to understand who you are. This letter should reflect your personality and current life . As well as your motivation to do this experience WITH them.

If you write a short letter, this information will be too basic and they will have difficulties imagining the person you are and projecting themselves welcoming you into their home. We do advise you to try to write about 1 1/2 or even 2 pages . This is usually enough to describe your life habits, your personality, your family and friends, your daily routine as well as the reasons why you applied to be an exchange student abroad.

If you apply to a student exchange in France , talk about your interest in the French language and culture.  If you intend to do a High School Study Abroad program in Spain , maybe talk about when you started to study Spanish at school and why you would be interested in improving your Spanish skills.

If you are interested in a High School exchange in Japan , maybe explain how you study the language and what is appealing in the traditional and pop culture of Japan.

 More about High School exchange

The whole idea is to present yourself and help the host family to know a bit more about the person you are. This is why you are invited to write :

  • about yourself,
  • your family and friends,
  • explain more about how your day looks like
  • explain the reasons why you have chosen to do a high school study abroad
  • share your feelings about the country you are going to study in
  • speak about your expectations about the program

Following this, include some personal traits. For example: "My friends would describe me as...". You can list all your qualities but make also sure to list some of your challenges, it will make you more human! It may also be nice to describe your relationship with your friends or family. How you relate to each other.

The host family letter is not the place where you should write about your preferences about the host family composition or environment for example. Remember that your host family letter will be shared with several prospective host families, all different from each others : your letter should "speak" to any kind of host family.

You should therefore not list your expectations about the host family who will welcome you as they may feel they will not be a good fit for you if they can't fulfill all of your criteria!

Your letter should "motivate" a host family to welcome you in their home, but you should not lie about yourself. Be honest, tell them about your motivations , and your feelings about this experience but do not hesitate to share your concerns if any. It may also be their first time hosting and they may also be reassured to see that they are not the only ones who are a bit anxious about the experience, even if they are very motivated and excited!

Student letter host family

The best is to thank your host family for their commitment to the student exchange program and their readiness to welcome an exchange student to their home for a few months. Tell them also that you are willing to get to know them, integrate yourself into their family life as smoothly as possible, and discover their language and way of life . Show that you are willing to adapt and will do your very best to make this experience enjoyable for all of you!

High School Study Abroad programs require you to adapt to a new environment, and a new host family and you will surely be out of your comfort zone for the first few weeks until you get more comfortable! Applying to a  student exchange program abroad is an important decision and taking the time to write the best letter to your future host family is a key to success!

Most exchange programs abroad for High School students offer host family accommodation. In some cases, you may also apply to a Boarding school program abroad .

letter to your host family - Matheus's tips

"We have to fill a lot of forms and besides that, we also have to do a letter for our future host family . I know that a lot of exchange students find it hard to do. Today I'm going to give you some tips for you. I did search for my letter to put here in the video as an example but apparently, I don't have it anymore!

My first tip is to start your letter with the basics:

  • tell your host family about who you are
  • what you like to do
  • how is your routine
  • what do you do after school
  • tell them if you have brothers or sisters
  • how is your family
  • where do you live
  • tell them about your city
  • tell them about your school

My second tip is to be honest because they want to know who you really are. It's not necessary to lie. They're gonna like you. Just try to be as honest as possible.

The next tip is to make sure your letter isn't too short because that doesn't look good. One or two pages are. Make sure you don't write a four-page letter, that's too much!

End your letter by thanking your family for choosing you and for welcoming you into their home. Tell them that you are excited to meet them. It's really important. It makes your letter better. Don't forget also to be creative! Write a nice letter so they can enjoy it while they are reading it.

If the family chooses you, it's because they think you're nice and they like you."

Thank you Matheus for your great tips for future exchange students! It will surely help them to get inspired when they write their host family letter for the High School study abroad program .

Presentation letter for my future host family

Dear host family and community, I would like to thank you for being a volunteer family and for hosting me for the next 10 months. You reading this letter means so much for me: it is a dream becoming reality. I'm putting a lot of effort on writing this presentation because I know it is important for both you and me so I hope I will make the best presentation possible. I am XXX XXX and I come from Italy. I'm a small city girl with a big passion for travelling and meeting new cultures. I am 16 years old and most of the closest people around me would describe me mainly as a curious, spontaneous and easy going person. From my curiosity I also developed a big interest in discovering new things and in getting educated in different topics; most of my friends like holding an exchange of opinions with me since they believe I have an open-minded point of view. Anyway I am a strong girl just on the outside, in fact, people who know me better, know also that I am very sensitive, emotional and unable to lie. At the same time, and it depends on the situations, I could be breezy and thoughtful. My relatives, classmates or even teachers are always describing me as a fun and cheerful girl, so it is somehow a pleasure to spend time with me. I am always looking forward to doing something new and productive even though I have a lazy character. If it was my mother writing this she would say that I am quiet messy (and that is reflected on my bedroom's chaos) but at the end, I often realise on my own that I should be tidier and more careful. Talking about my mom, I should introduce you my family even at kilometres of distance. Starting with her, I must highlight the fact that she is from Croatia so part of my family lives away from me. Anyway, I get the chance to see my croatian relatives twice a year and thanks to this I am very bounded with my grandparents, my uncles and my cousins overseas. I have a good relationship with my parents and for me is easier, as an only child, to talk with them about school, my lifelong plans or just having small talks. Also, my parents spent a lot of time with me since I was a child so both of my parental figures are solid and, with that being said, I could describe our family as a normal and peaceful one even though we are not perfect either. Back to me, I must say that as an active teenager I do a lot of thing in my spare time. As I said before I like discovering new places and things. I usually spend my sunny afternoons outside, taking a long walk in the city centre or in the countryside, going to a café, riding my bike or chilling in the park with my friends. I can't define myself as an "oudoorsy" nor as an "indoorsy" person since I enjoy staying at home too. In fact, whenever it's dull or rainy I like to read a good book all wrapped in my wool blanket while drinking a cup of tea or, even better, hot chocolate. When I feel quiet artistic I also try baking some cookies or cakes with my mum. Also, to make studying slightly funner, some of my classmates and I organise study session at the local library. Other than a student I am also an Italian Red Cross volunteer and since this Settember I am part of the "Young committee" of my hometown centre. Since this autumn I also enrolled in a Chinese course and a theatre course in English. So, as you may have realised, I really like learning new languages, whatever they are. Not only, when I feel particularly athletic I also go for a run or I do a spinning class at home. Nevertless I must say that my favourite sport is and it will always be volleyball because I have played it for about 9 years and it made me grow up emotionally. Even though I do lots of things outside my school timetable I always manage time to study enough in order to maintain my high grades. I do care about my grades but sometimes it is hard to do all my "study tasks". I am not a genius and neither someone who can spend their whole afternoon studying but I enjoy most of my classes at school especially latin, greek and english. I am not very good at chemistry but I'm starting to like maths more this year. In my free time I also like reading newspapers or news magazines and I much appreciate the fact that our school is the one that encourages us to do so. I am attending a humanities high school but in the future I would like to persue a career in the Science field: in Economics or Global Development. I could keep talking for pages and pages but I don't want to bore you and I cant't actually wait to see you and tell you about myself face to face! So again, a big thank you for your kindness and huge hospitality. I am looking forward to being part of your culture and learn as much as possible from this incredible experience. Best wishes, XXX XXX.

Three things (about the first paragraph). I would delete the "and community" part unless you are writing to the whole town. The first sentence is fine. The rest of that paragraph is a bit strange. You talk about them reading the letter, and you talk about writing the letter. You could say that you appreciate their wonderful hospitality. (The expression is "a dream come true".)

Second paragraph. The first sentence is fine. For the second sentence, say you like meeting people from different cultural backgrounds.

Second paragraph, third sentence. Say: My friends would describe me as ....

Au pair memories

Mein jahr in washington dc, host family letter.

Dear host family,

I am already very excited about getting to know you. But, first of all, I would like to introduce myself to you.

My name is Jana Greifelt. I am 21 years old and from the small city Steinfurt in Germany. With my parents, Marion (49) and Andreas (52), and my brother Luca (15), I am living in a house that is located in an area full of nature.  We have got two cats and two rabbits, who love to cuddle all day. My father works as a roofer at a small firm, my mother works as an office clerk. Luca is currently attending the 10th grade of secondary school. Overall, we are a pretty large family, I have ten cousins. I would describe myself as a reliable and caring person, who tries to make the best out of every situation. I like spending time with my friends; they are – as well as my family – very important to me. Always trying to help, I’m always there for them if they need me. In my free time, I like to listen to music, go shopping or dance. Dancing is one of my favorite hobbies and I am also teaching young children at a local dancing club. Furthermore, I enjoy reading a good book and singing – even though I cannot sing. Every summer, I supervise children at a local football camp. It is always a lot of fun! Being a huge fan of the German football club FC Schalke 04 (maybe you know it?) I am going to the stadium very often to support the team. At the moment, I work as a driver for a pharmacy, delivering medicine to the homes of patients. I enjoy this job very much, because I am able to bond with many of my customers. I also work as a waitress at town festivals and at a local restaurant. Four years ago I did an apprenticeship as a media clerk in a small publishing house.  Before the apprenticeship I completed my secondary school. For the past ten years, I took care of children of all ages from different families. I became very close to them and I cherish the time I have spent with them. When my brother was younger, I also took care of him, when our mum was working. Through this time, I have found out how much fun it is to have children around, I can’t imagine a life without them. The reason why I want to go to the USA as an au pair is that I want to get to know the American way of life as well as different cultures. Most importantly, it would be a great chance to spend an entire year taking care of children. And of course, it would be great to improve my English skills as well.

I hope we can develop a good relationship, working and living together as a family. I would be very happy to experience an eventful year with you and your kids. I am looking forward to talking to you.

Yours sincerely, Jana

Letter to Potential Host Family - From German Exchange Student, Elisabeth

presentation letter host family

Host family letter :)

Dear hostfamily,

first of all, I would like to thank you for reading my letter and spending time on getting to know me better. We never met – so I hope the following lines will give you an impression about me, my life in Germany and why I would like to spend a year in the USA.

My name is Nathalie, I am fifteen years old and I’ll become 16 on March 31st. My friends describe me as an open-minded, funny, spontaneous, sportive and creative person. Laughing is one of my favorite things to do, I am an optimistic person and I’m always making the most out of every situation.

I’m living together with my parents XXX &XXX, my almost-14-year-old brother XXX and my very cute little sister XXX. I guess my sister is the cutest, funniest little thing in the whole world, maybe she is a little bit clumsy. That often makes it difficult to look after her which is something I got to do a lot when my parents are working. In spite of everything, I love her so much, she’s my favorite sister. My brother and I sometimes play video games together. It’s always fun because we can laugh about the same things. I have a really good relationship to my parents. My father works a lot, as a controller, but I’ll always be his “little” girl. My mother also has a lot of work to do. I try to help her whenever I can. Helping in the kitchen and with the laundry, as well as babysitting and tidying up my room are thing I always had to do. Both of my parents raised me to be a creative, loving, honest and responsible person with an own opinion. In fact, I love them all so much and you cannot put us all together in a room without having a really funny, good time.

My family and I, we live in a small town very close to Berlin. Berlin is awesome, I spend a lot of my free time there, going to the movies, shopping or just hanging out with some of my friends at Starbuck’s. I love our girls’ nights as well as go swimming at a lake close to my school in summer. Besides my family, my friends are the most important persons in my life. I don’t really have one best friend, but I have many very good friends. They listen to me and try to help, when I have troubles and we laugh a lot. I can count on them and we always have so much fun together. On the weekends we go out, cook or go to concerts together. We all love dancing as well as music in general.

Besides my friends I also have some other interests, and music is one of them. I have been playing piano for almost ten years and I’m teaching myself to play the guitar for about two years. I really got good at playing piano but playing the guitar will always be something I just do for fun. I always did a lot of sports. I started playing tennis in a club in my hometown six years ago, and I started practicing Kung Fu even earlier. In addition I love to go jogging whenever there is time for it. Since I got an on easel for Christmas, I also like painting.

I attend the 10th grade of a small school close to the place where I live. My favorite subjects in school are PE, art, biology and politics. I like PE and art because I love painting and sports, too, and I like Biology and Politics because I like to know as much as possible about the world around me. Besides English I learn French and Spanish at school. I’m a class representative and I love how school gives me the chance to spend time with my friends in the breaks and at lunch.

Probably you will ask yourself why I want to be an exchange student. I think it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, getting to know the „American way of life“, improve my English and make new experiences. It’s not that I don’t like my life here in Germany, in contrary, I will miss my family and my friends for sure. But I know that the experiences of one year with you will be more than worth leaving my normal home. I am so excited about the stay and I hope I‘ll be able to show you something about the German way of life. As I love cooking I could also cook German meals for you.

I am looking forward to get to know you an Iam so thankful that you consider hosting me for one year.

So I hope I will hear from you and even more to be a part of your family,

Gefällt mir echt gut, dein Brief!

:grinning:

first of all, I would like to thank you for reading my letter. As we haven`t met so far I would like to introduce myself to you and give you an impression of me, my life in Germany and why I would like to spend a year in the USA.

My name is Nathalie and I am fifteen years old. My friends would describe me as an open-minded, funny, spontaneous, sportive and creative person. I love laughting, I am an optimistic person and I always make the most out of every situation.

I live together with my parents XXX & XXX, my 13-year-old brother XXX and my very cute little sister XXX. I guess my sister is the cuttest and funniest little thing in the world but as she is a bit clumsy it is pretty difficult to look after her - I often do this while my parents are working. My brother and me sometimes play videogames together. It’s always fun because we can laugh about the same things. I get along very good with my parents. My father is a controller (?) and my mother (?). I try to help her whenever I can. Often I help out in the kitchen or with the laundry, look after my sister and tidy up my room. Indeed I love my family so much and you cannot put us all together in a room without having a really funny, good time.

We live in a small town very close to Berlin. Berlin is awesome - I love spending my spare time there and go to the movies, go shopping or just hang out with my friends at Starbuck’s. Beside my family, my friends are the most important people in my life. I don’t really have one best friend but many very good friends. They listen to me, try to help me with my problems and, of course, we have a lot of fun together. At the weekend we enjoy going out, doing sleepovers, going swimming, cooking or going to concerts. We all love both music and dancing !

Beside spending time with my friends I also have some other interests and music is one of them. I have played piano for almost ten years and I teach myself playing the guitar for about two years. I`m pretty good when it comes to playing the piano but I will always be playing the guitar just for fun. Furthermore I do a lot of sports: I started playing tennis in a club in my hometown six years ago and I started practicing Kung Fu even earlier. Probably you will ask yourself why I want to be an exchange student. I think it’s a great opportunity to have a great experience, meet new people, get to know the „American way of life“ and improve my English. I really enjoy my life in Germany and I´m pretty sure that I will miss my family and my friends a lot. But I know that this experience of one year with you will be more than worth leaving my home. I am so excited about my year abroad and would be glad to spend this time with you guys and become a part of your family !

I hope to hear from you soon !

Viele Grüße,

Marie-Claire

:stuck_out_tongue:

Your letter is good, but I have one big suggestion: take the paragraphs about music (piano), art and school (from the bottom) and move them above the part where you talk about your friends. Those paragraphs have some very good details that will help you find a family, but the details about hanging with your friends, shopping, etc. are not as strong as your hobbies. You should put your strongest information first.

The UNI FBC was born out of a program focused on valuation, succession and transition planning. While working with companies in this space, the team recognized that a majority were family-operated. Family businesses face unique challenges during their start-up and throughout the life of the business, so the UNI FBC set out to meet a need in Iowa. Now, it is a large team that connects family leaders from all over the US. From its location in the middle of the Heartland, the UNI FBC has a large network of resources to set you up on a trajectory for success. Lawmakers press FDA on why a proposal to ban hair-straightening chemicals is delayed

This combination of 2021-2023 photos shows U.S. Reps. Shontel Brown, D-Ohio, left; Ayanna...

(AP) - Two U.S. House members who first pushed the Food and Drug Administration in 2023 to investigate the health risks of hair straighteners used primarily by Black women are now asking the agency why it has twice delayed its target date to propose a ban on products containing formaldehyde , which studies link to increased rates of cancer.

Democratic Reps. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Shontel Brown of Ohio pressed the FDA in a letter to finalize the proposed rule for banning certain salon-grade and at-home hair straighteners. Rep. Nydia Velazquez of New York joined Pressley and Brown in spearheading the letter, which was dated Tuesday.

The FDA gave notice of a possible rule in 2023 with an initial target date to release the proposal in April. That was then moved to July before jumping to September.

The letter from Pressley, Brown and Velazquez — all of whom are up for re-election this year — asks FDA Commissioner Robert Califf to provide specific reasons for the delay.

Pressley told The Associated Press that Black women look to straightening treatments in part because of hair discrimination .

“If you do a Google search right now of unprofessional work hairstyles, you’ll be besieged by images of Black women,” said Pressley, who also believes another delay could cause more health issues for communities of color. “Everything from protective styles, Senegalese twists or braids like I wore for many years, or afros or locs ... I just want everyone to be able to show up fully, authentically and unapologetically, without fear and without discrimination.”

It isn’t uncommon for the FDA to have items on the regulatory agenda for years. For example, the draft of a proposed ban on menthol cigarettes came out in 2022, but the target date on finalizing the rule was pushed back twice before it was indefinitely delayed in April.

When asked about the letter, an FDA spokesperson told the AP that agency officials would respond directly to lawmakers. Last month, the agency said the proposed ban was still among its top priorities and in the rulemaking process, but couldn’t comment to the AP on the timing or content of the proposal.

Black women and women of other ethnicities have used chemical hair-straightening treatments for decades, and many of the relaxers, creams and keratin treatments contain formaldehyde — a chemical used in pesticides and to preserve dead bodies.

A 2022 study from the National Institutes of Health found people who used hair straighteners had an increased risk of developing uterine cancer. A 2023 study from Boston University found that postmenopausal women who used relaxers most often had a greater than 50% increased risk of uterine cancer compared to those who seldom used them.

Thousands of lawsuits allege that beauty companies that make some of the hair straighteners misrepresented “health impacts” of the products, and exposed plaintiffs to chemicals that increased the risk of uterine and ovarian cancers. Some also claim they experienced infertility after using the products.

In a social media video from October , the FDA reminded people that no ban was in place yet, and that the agency planned to work with and encourage the cosmetics industry to develop alternative straightening products.

Kamala Harris’s Stepdaughter Ella Emhoff Speaks at the D.N.C.

Continuing the d.n.c.’s family theme, vice president kamala harris’s stepdaughter ella emhoff took the stage on thursday night..

Kamala came into my life when I was 14, famously, a very easy time for a teenager. Like a lot of young people, I didn’t always understand what I was feeling. But no matter what, Kamala was there for me. She was patient, caring, and always took me seriously. She’s never stopped listening to me, and she’s not going to stop listening to all of us.

Ella Emhoff, the stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris, spoke onstage at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday evening, alongside Meena Harris, Ms. Harris’s niece, and Helena Hudlin, Ms. Harris’s goddaughter whose mother introduced Ms. Emhoff’s father, Doug Emhoff, to Ms. Harris over a decade ago.

“Kamala came into my life when I was 14, famously a very easy time for a teenager,” Ms. Emhoff said. “Like a lot of young people, I didn’t always understand what I was feeling, but no matter what, Kamala was there for me. She was patient caring and always took me seriously. She’s never stopped listening to me and she’s not going to stop listening to all of us.”

She also described her stepmother’s focus on fighting for health, environmental and social justice. “She isn’t alone, we’re all in this fight together,” Ms. Emhoff, 25, said.

Ms. Emhoff and her family have been fixtures at this week’s events. Her brother, Cole Emhoff, introduced their father before his speech on Tuesday evening. Their mother, the film producer Kerstin Emhoff, has also been in attendance. (The couple divorced in 2009; Ms. Harris and Mr. Emhoff married in 2014.) In his speech, Mr. Emhoff proudly described his “ big, beautiful blended family .” Before Ms. Emhoff took the stage, Ms. Harris’s grandnieces, with some help from the actor Kerry Washington, taught the crowd how to properly pronounce Ms. Harris’s name. “Comma-la!”

Ms. Emhoff had discussed her father’s speech on Instagram earlier in the week, writing “if you saw me cry on tv NO YOU DIDNT.” She continued, “Just kidding I was crying like a little baby.”

In the post, she included a photo of herself kissing her purse for the evening: a black leather bag with a fake chocolate chip cookie affixed to the front from the designer Puppets and Puppets that she paired with a plaid suit from Thom Browne.

TAMMY BRUCE: An open letter to the Kennedys who turned on RFK Jr

Storied family has the nerve to cite 'values' in condemning sibling who followed his conscience.

Tammy Bruce

Trump and I will continue to ‘criticize’ each other on issues we do not agree on: Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Former Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reveals when it became ‘clear’ that he did not have a path to victory in the 2024 election on ‘Fox News Sunday.’

On the day Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. suspended his presidential campaign and  endorsed former president Donald Trump for the presidency, one would expect an outcry from the usual suspects. After all, this is politics. But the most malicious response came from Kennedy’s own family.

For daring to follow his conscience, Bobby was  condemned by his siblings in a public statement promoted publicly by his sister Kerry Kennedy, and posted on the social media platform X. Kerry,  who dropped the ‘Cuomo’ from her name after her 2005 divorce from Andrew, was the spearpoint of the denunciation within which they excoriated Bobby for betraying "the values that our father and family hold most dear."

RFK JR RESPONDS TO DRAMA WITHIN KENNEDY FAMILY, WIFE'S DISCOMFORT AFTER TRUMP ENDORSEMENT

Values are worth talking about, and in the midst of this extraordinary time for our country, a response had to made,  which I originally posted on X .

Here is that Open Letter to Kerry Kennedy:

RFK and Trump

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. shakes hands with former President Trump at a campaign rally Friday, Aug. 23, 2024, in Glendale, Arizona.

You people are awful. Despite your family's checkered past and horrible behavior of so many of the men, Americans have stood with you out of loyalty, sentimentality, and too often, grief. Despite the  questionable   establishment of your family's wealth, the  treatment of Marilyn Monroe , the general  womanizing , the abandonment of  Mary Jo Kopechne to her death,  allegations of rape , one could go on and on, but the point is your family has stayed loyal and protective of family members who have done the most appalling of things. But the moment one of your own acts on his conscience for this country you attempt to throw him to the wolves and publicly condemn him. Never a word for  the trail of abused or abandoned women left behind by a Kennedy , but because one of your men supports Trump in an effort to make the lives of Americans better, that alone is beyond the pale.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION

In your ugly treatment of your brother, you reveal the rot that has broken the hearts of the American people so many times over the years. Beyond that, the economic destruction of American families is something your family would never truly understand. You are not touched by the worry about having enough gas to get to work, or whether or not you can afford eggs this week, if you'll be safe walking in your own neighborhood, or if your child will be safe in their urban public school or even if they will know how to read and write while collecting their diploma.

You keep doing civil rights work and public service virtue signaling. But in the meantime, make a pledge to not keep doing damage, as Americans are simply looking for a way to reclaim their own futures, the safety of their families, and knowing that maybe, just maybe, they can leave their children a little better off with a future they can rely on. The condition of this country should shock everyone, even if their name is Kennedy. We know it at least shocks one of you who, like us, has had enough of the fear and hopelessness assigned to us for generations.

Americans are happy to see Bobby on our side as we refuse to comply and will not go gentle into the catastrophes to which we are expected to succumb. Instead, with Trump and all who join us, we will fight, fight, fight!

What one supporter of the Vote Uncommitted movement wanted to tell the DNC

We'd love to hear your thoughts on the podcast. Take the survey here or at wbur.org / survey .

In a letter to Rep. Jim Jordan, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he regrets bowing to what he calls White House pressure in 2021 to take down some Facebook posts related to COVID-19. Bloomberg's Kurt Wagner tells us more.

Then, at last week's Democratic National Convention, Palestinian American Ruwa Romman supported the Vote Uncommitted movement, backing an immediate ceasefire and an arms embargo to Israel. Romman talks about what she wanted to tell the DNC crowds about the movement's goals as the election approaches.

Living my dream in America

Lettera alla host family.

Ciao a tutti!

"I'm Martina, I'm a sixteen years old girl who lives in the south of Italy.

It's always been my dream to study in America, and I'm so happy I can finally realize this dream. I've already been in America twice, on holiday, and I fell in love with your country.

The most important reason why I decided to do this experience is because I think this will help me to grow up and because this will help me overcome my fears and my shyness, because yes, I'm really shy and reserved, I don't like going out on Saturday night with my friends, I would prefer staying at home watching a movie enjoying a cup of tea.

I'm really determined to do the things I want to do, and I'm also very determined to make this the best year ever.

I'm not a fussy eater, I eat pretty much everything, there are only a few things that I don't like, and I love trying new types of food.

Here in Italy, I attend a graphic design school, I study the basic subjects (Italian, history, math, English, etc..) and art subjects (graphic design, photography, web design, etc..). When I grow up I would like to be an interior designer. I love decorating my house here in Italy, especially during Christmas time, I love everything about Christmas.

As I said, I'm really shy so don't be worried if in the first few days I don't talk a lot, that's normal, I just need my time to open up and reveal the person I really am. Apart from being shy, I'm also really calm and obedient, I don't like to cause problems to others, I like helping people and I will help you whenever you need a hand, and I'm hoping you will do the same. Overall I'm a nice girl and I think I'm going to be a nice daughter.

I would also like to address that I'm not into drugs, alcohol or anything like that.

I've never been far from home for so long, I want to test myself and see that I can do things without the help of my parents.

What about my family?

There's four of us... sorry I meant six: My father, he's fifty and he is an -----; my mother, she's forty-six and she is a ---; I have an older brother, he's twenty-one and he's a student; then, we have two dogs, Max, who is eleven years old (in human years) and Nicolas, who is only one year old (also in human years), and I love them so much. I get on quite well with my brother, but I think that if he was a couple of years younger we would get on a bit better. I really hope to have a host brother/sister of my age, I think this would be really helpful for me, and I would finally be able to see if having a sibling my age is actually as good as I think.

As I said we live in the south of Italy, the weather here is really hot in summer (that I don't really like), and kind of cold in winter, but it never snows, I kind of like the weather here, but I think it would be ten times better if it snowed. I live near the sea, but I don't like it, I don't really like summer in general, I prefer fall and winter, I just don't like the sea, I don't like going there, the smell of it, I just don't like it at all.

My hobbies:

I think that if I had to make a list, traveling would be the first one, I love visiting new places and come across new cultures; I would totally give watching movies and TV series the second place, I love doing that; as I already said, I love Christmas, I don't want to be repetitive but for me Christmas totally deserves the third place, even if it isn't really a hobby, I just love decorating the house, putting Christmas lights up, decorating the tree, etc..

I also love cooking, especially baking, and I can't wait to make Italian dishes for you, to bring a piece of my Italian home to your house.

Another thing, I'm sure I will love you, you chose me, and this gave me this amazing opportunity to study abroad. I really hope that I'm going to feel a part of your family and that you will be proud of me, I also hope that this experience won't just be amazing for me, but also for you.

Thank you and see you soon,

Martina"

Quindi.. questa è la mia lettera, spero vi sia piaciuta e non vedo l' ora di condivide tutti gli step che mi porteranno a questa magnifica esperienza.
