EXAMPLES OF INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES Below is a brief sample of international research opportunities and programs. This list is meant to illustrate the kinds of options that may be available, but it is just a place to begin your search and to provide you with ideas for types of programs:

American Academy In Rome & the School of Classical Studies Research Fellowships : Supports advanced undergraduates to undertake research relevant to the Academy and School of Classical Studies.

The CERN Summer Student Program  - Geneva, Switzerland Students selected for the program will spend from the summer working with active research groups at CERN, one of the world’s premier international laboratories.

Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)  - Switzerland The Summer Research Program in Life Sciences and Technology at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), offers an intensive research training opportunity for undergraduate students interested in research careers in life sciences.

École Polytechnique, The Internship Program for International Students  - France Gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to carry out a 3 to 6-month internship in laboratories from Ecole Polytechnique.

EuroScholars  - Research at Nine Research Universities in Europe Opportunity for advanced undergraduates from US and Canadian universities to conduct research at one of nine major research universities in Europe.

Excavations at Tel Dor in Israel   - Tel Dor, Israel Students are instructed in modern archeological technique and become valued members of an international archeological team.

Fulbright US Student Program (Research)  - Various, World-wide The Fulbright is a nationally prestigious opportunity for graduating College students and alum to pursue international research of their own design in countries around the world. Current students and alum must apply through the College process with the support of the CCSA. 

The ISTernship Summer Program - Vienna, Austria Summer research opportunity for students interested in basic research in the fields of biology, computer science, data science, mathematics, physics, neuroscience and interdisciplinary areas.

Ku Leuven Internships  - Leuven, Belgium This internship allows undergraduate and masters students to conduct scientific research in an international setting. 

Multidisciplinary International Research Training Program  - Various Locations The program provides support for undergraduate and graduate students to do health-related population-based research and training in developing countries.

NanoJapan: Summer Nanotechnology Research Internship Program  - Japan The NanoJapan program will select up to twelve (12) first and second-year undergraduate engineering or physics students who will be placed in a Japanese research lab.

National Science Foundation International Research Experience for Students Program  - Brazil The purpose of the University of Pittsburgh's IRES program is to create an innovative research experience in sustainable design for a select group of undergraduate engineering students who have high potential to pursue graduate education.

Partnerships for International Research and Education Science and engineering students from all backgrounds (race, ethnicity, citizenship, and gender) who are interested in the enhancement of cyberinfrastructure or in applying cyberinfrastructure to solve society- and industry-driven problems are encouraged to apply.

The Pasteur Foundation Internship Program   - Paris, France The Pasteur Foundation created a summer internship program for American undergraduates who wish to pursue a scientific career and to expose them to an international laboratory experience.

Research Internships in Science and Engineering  - Multiple locations within Germany RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering.

Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award  - Singapore Supports short-term research attachments for international students at A*STAR. A unique opportunity for top overseas students to experience the vibrant scientific environment in A*STAR Research Institutes and Consortia. Students will be able to work with distinguished and world-renowned researchers in A*STAR labs.

SIT Study Abroad   - Multiple Locations Internationally

Smithsonian Tropical Research Insititute - Panama Internships give interns the opportunity to meet and interact with scientists from around the world, gain hands-on experience in their area of academic interest, and delve into Panama’s rich culture.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Undergraduate Scholarship Program  - Germany Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany.

The Open School of Ethnography and Anthropology  - Merida and Piste, Mexico Provides on-site, hands-on training in ethnography and anthropology

The Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy (ASTRON) and the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE) Summer Research Program  - The Netherlands The Program enables astronomy students (graduate or advanced under-graduate) to spend the summer (10-12 weeks) at the Dwingeloo Observatory, conducting astronomical research under the supervision of ASTRON and JIVE staff members.

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship Program  - Multiple Locations in Switzerland Supports highly motivated and qualified U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to do research at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2 to 3 months.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program at RWTH Aachen University   - Aachen, Germany Aims to provide students with the opportunity to carry out their own research projects under the guidance of experienced RWTH researchers.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is a fully funded, eight-week summer residential program that brings 30 talented and motivated undergraduate students from across the country and the world to Stanford Engineering for an immersive research and graduate school preparation experience.

SURF is designed to demystify the admissions process and give scholars a real feel for what it means to conduct research at the graduate level. The program provides students with housing, a meal plan, a travel stipend, and a stipend upon completion of the program. In addition, SURF students will have the opportunity to participate in a robust graduate school preparation program including coding experience, industry visits, excursions around the Bay Area, community-building activities, participation in a research symposium, and a strong mentorship component.

Welcome to our 2024 SURF Fellows! Engaged in research across all 9 Engineering departments at Stanford, our students are contributing to groundbreaking research that tackles the major challenges of the 21st century.

The program aims to build community and create a cohort of future graduate student engineers who can promote diversity of thought and experience within the engineering and science student body. Student engagement in research increases 1) the retention of students in scientific research , 2) student interest in graduate school , and 3) student interest in STEM careers . Since its inception, SURF has been a vehicle for undergraduate students to conduct scientific research and a foundation for them to pursue graduate studies in engineering.

We are committed to advancing a culture of respect, accessibility, inclusion, and empowerment at for all students at Stanford Engineering. We make intentional efforts to outreach and connect with competitive students with demonstrated potential, including those who come from environments with limited access to Research I university programs.

Application Information

Program eligibility - applicants must.

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited public or private college or university in the United States or its territories, as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Full-time community college students in their transfer year are eligible to apply. U.S. domestic undocumented and DACAmented students are eligible to apply. 
  • If the applicant is a foreign national enrolled in a college or university within the United States & in possession of a valid F-1 Visa, they must be first generation (first in their family to attend university in pursuit of a bachelor's degree) and/or from low socioeconomic status, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education . Unfortunately, we are unable to accept applications from international students who are enrolled in public or private colleges or universities outside of the United States, regardless of first generation and/or socioeconomic status.  
  • Be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Note: Applications from students who describe exceptional circumstances in their statement of purpose and/or personal history statement, or who demonstrate a marked progression of improving grades on their transcript, may be considered.
  • Demonstrate a committed interest to pursue graduate study toward a  PhD in an engineering field . If you plan on pursuing an MD, JD, MBA, or other non-research-focused advanced degree, this is not the right program for you.
  • Have completed at least two semesters/three quarters (or equivalent) and have at least one full semester/quarter remaining of their undergraduate education at the end of the summer program. Priority given to rising juniors (3rd years) and seniors (4th years). Master's students are not eligible. 

In efforts to attract applicants from a variety of life experiences, two application options are available:

  • Eligible applicants are encouraged to apply to SURF through the Leadership Alliance's Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) *
  • Applicants may also apply through the Stanford SURF program application ** 

*Submitting an application through either portal is acceptable. All applications are reviewed thoroughly and holistically regardless of the application portal chosen, and the applicant should not submit their application twice. If you are applying through SR-EIP, you will not be able to submit an optional personal history statement or rank your top 3 SURF labs. To submit your personal history statement and lab rankings, please email PDF attachments to [email protected] with the subject line: LastName-FirstName-Personal History Statement and Lab Rankings. 

**Undocumented students, DACAmented students, and first generation and/or low income international applicants studying at U.S. colleges and universities with an F-1 visa should submit their application through the Stanford SURF Portal . Unfortunately, the SURF program is unable to accept applications from international students enrolled in colleges and universities outside the U.S.

The SURF team conducts a holistic review of all applications and extends initial invitations to top applicants. 

The deadline for both applications (including all letters of recommendation and supporting documents) is February 1 at 11:59pm.   Applicants will be notified of a decision for the program in early March.

Application Materials

As part of the application form, applicants must submit the following materials: 

  • Resume or CV : 3 pages in length at maximum
  • Academic Transcript : Unofficial transcript will suffice; official transcript not necessary.
  • Statement of Purpose : The statement of purpose should be an essay crafted to convey your academic and career goals, with an emphasis on your current research interests. In this essay, you should clearly explain your interest for pursuing doctoral level (PhD) training. An interview is not a standard part of the SURF application process. Consider the statement of purpose your opportunity to introduce yourself to a review committee and the chance to answer any information you might share during an interview. Statements should be typed, single-spaced, and 1-2 pages in length. 
  • Two Letters of Recommendation : We highly recommend letters from faculty & supervisors who can specifically discuss your academic potential and research preparation for the program.
  • Optional Personal History Statement (Strongly Encouraged) : For the optional personal history statement, we invite you to share unique, personally important experiences, demonstrated values, perspectives, or activities that have led you to this point in your academic/professional journey. Please discuss how they have influenced your path in school, inform your approach to science and research, and/or serve as motivation for pursuing your chosen field in engineering. 1000 words max. Note : If you are applying through Leadership Alliance SR-EIP and would like to submit an optional personal history statement, please email a PDF attachment to [email protected] with the subject line   LastName-FirstName-PersonalHistoryStatement. 

Application Resources - Exemplars

In an effort to support applicants in preparing their applications, updated exemplars will be provided in fall 2024. These are not meant to be prescriptive, but rather to offer you examples of what successful statements have looked like in previous years; remember there are many ways to write successful statements. We encourage you to have your statements reviewed by trusted mentors, as well as your college or university's writing center tutors if those are available to you.

The Global Research & Internship Program enhances your career potential through life-changing global work and research experience.

The Global Research & Internship Program (GRIP) offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to intern or conduct research with a variety of organizations and companies abroad for 8 to 12 weeks over the summer. As part of the GRIP program, you collaborate with people from different backgrounds, embrace and adapt to new challenges, and gain global exposure that makes you stand out when applying for jobs or graduate school.

A wide variety of internship placements across many career industries including business, engineering, sustainable development, healthcare, community development, and more.

Research placements that offer the opportunity to develop hands-on research skills under leading international researchers and faculty PIs affiliated with a university abroad.

Generous guaranteed funding awards to help accepted students offset travel and internship-related expenses.

Summer Research Programs

Program Name Description Application Deadline

The ACEE Summer Internship Program provides competitive funding that supports undergraduate research on energy- and environment-related projects, particularly field work and laboratory research. Internships are offered for research projects working under the guidance of a faculty adviser on campus, or with non-profit organizations off-campus. Internships typically last from eight to ten weeks.  Opportunities exist for students from disciplines outside of engineering, including social sciences and natural sciences, and students from these departments are encouraged to apply.

January

This program is designed to introduce undergraduate students to research and applications at the interface of engineering and the life science. In addition to undertaking a research project in an academic lab, students will also receive basic training and experience in communicating their research findings. Students will also be exposed to academic and industry career paths in Bioengineering. Student participants will be part of a cohort of 10-20 other students working on a range of Bioengineering research projects across campus. Students will have the opportunity to interact with a cohort of fellow Princeton and visiting undergraduates interested in Bioengineering (including the Princeton iGEM team), participate in activities including an industry visit, tour of Princeton Innovation Center Biolabs (PICB), training in best practices in scientific communication, and participate in a end of year poster session and reception. Rising sophomores through rising seniors are encouraged to apply. .

The Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System (CIMES) at Princeton University in collaboration with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) recruits students for 8-9 week research internships in atmospheric, oceanic and earth system science. Interns will work on a focused scientific problem under the close supervision of their GFDL/Princeton host, and benefit from resources and activities at GFDL, including interaction with scientists and graduate students, access to high performance computing and library facilities, and opportunities to participate in a wide range of seminars and GFDL social events.

The Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton offers the Siegel Public Interest Technology Summer Fellowship (PIT-SF) program that is aimed at rising juniors and seniors attending school in the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT UN). Students interested in getting first-hand experience working on technology policy at the federal, state, and local level are encouraged to apply.

 

February

This program is offered to interested in hands-on mentored research experience through the summer months. The proposed research project will aim to illustrate recent advances in the application of machine learning to molecular dynamics simulations based on quantum-mechanical electronic structure theory. The students will apply these techniques to gain insight into systems of interest in chemistry and materials science.

March

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering provides eligible ECE majors (sophomores and juniors) competitive funding for on-campus summer internships. Internships are offered for research projects working under the guidance of an on campus, ECE faculty member or closed related ECE faculty member. Internships span over the course of nine weeks and are paid through a weekly stipend. These internships are directly supported by the Johnson ’64 Slingshot Fund and the Michael Reed Summer Research Gift.

The Keller Center’s eLab Summer Accelerator Program at Princeton University is a launch pad for student startups. The program is open, by application only, to some of Princeton’s brightest and most dynamic students. The eLab is based in the new Entrepreneurial Hub at   in downtown Princeton. Over a period of ten weeks student teams work intensively on their startup ideas, following a specialized entrepreneurship curriculum presented to them during a 3-day intensive boot camp. The teams also attend meetings and workshops, and receive valuable mentorship and advising through a network of Keller Center faculty, staff, seasoned entrepreneurs and technology experts, all with the goal of developing their startup ideas into viable, scalable ventures. 

Mid-December

The eLab Summer Associate internship is a fabulous opportunity for Princeton students interested in entrepreneurship and startups but aren't quite ready to launch their own venture. Students will be exposed to all aspects of startup business activities as well as participate in a variety of workshops, social events, and meetings over the course of the 10-week program. Make new friends, learn about startup life, and have a fun, exciting summer right here in Princeton! 

Mid-December

The Global Health Scholars Program provides outstanding Princeton students with funding for travel and research to pursue health-related internships and senior thesis research, both in the U.S. and abroad. This competitive program, administered by the Center for Health and Wellbeing, is open to students from all departments.

Spring semester

The Environmental Internship Program based in the High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) offers Princeton undergraduate students the opportunity to complement their academic course of study with hands-on research and project experiences during the summer months. Students who wish to expand their knowledge of global environmental problems are encouraged to apply.

 

January

The International Internship Program (IIP) offers summer internships to first years, sophomores, and juniors. IIP offers opportunities in 50 countries across various regions and in a wide range of industries including business and consulting, public policy, education, health, community engagement, and research-based internships in all academic fields. Students accepted to an IIP receive a financial award to help cover expected costs of living in their host country.

Princeton’s Center for Health and Wellbeing offers undergraduate summer internship positions that explore multidisciplinary aspects of global health and/or infectious disease. Internships are fully-funded and are available in the U.S. and around the world.

The John C. Bogle ‘51 Fellows in Civic Service program (Bogle Fellowship) is a funded opportunity available exclusively to Princeton first-year students and was developed to support student participation in service or civic engagement pursuits during the summer before sophomore year.
 

February

Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts is honored to provide funding through an award established in memory of Alexander Jay Adam ’07. The Alex Adam ’07 Award, made possible by a generous gift from his family, will provide support to undergraduates who want to spend a summer pursuing a project that will result in the creation of an original work of art.

February to March

The Ludwig Princeton summer internship program will provide hands-on training to conduct research on the molecular events leading to the onset and progression of cancer. In addition to participating in cutting edge cancer research in laboratories at Princeton University or the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, students will have opportunities to attend lectures by cancer researchers. Tours of research facilities and participation in molecular tumor board meetings will provide rare opportunities to observe how scientific discoveries are translated into effective medicine and improved patient care.

MAE SPRE provides the opportunity for students to explore engineering from the research perspective and gain insight and experience that does not result from classroom learning. Students are exposed to different types of research that are being pursued by the faculty. A general outline of the summer project is jointly developed by the student and faculty adviser. Part of the criteria for selection involves a brief written proposal for a summer project of academic merit as well as a faculty sponsor who endorses the proposal.

Now past its twentieth year, this program offers interdisciplinary research experience in leading laboratories to students majoring in the physical or mathematical science or engineering at colleges with limited research opportunities. The program is open only to non-Princeton students. Each student serves as a research assistant in the laboratory of a Princeton faculty member who serves as a mentor and research adviser. The program directors, in consultation with training faculty, match student interests to available projects. The Molecular Biophysics REU Program also has an international research opportunity.

This REU Training Site has the mission to support formerly incarcerated undergraduate students in gaining research experience in computational biology, the principles of scientific thinking, and research scholarship. Eligible applicants include those who have US military service and students over 30 years of age, and all groups that have been historically excluded in STEM education and employment. Students accepted into the 9-week REU program will be assigned to and join a participating faculty mentor and their research group. REU interns will also be supported by Princeton University's Prison Teaching Initiative team for weekly meetings with larger groups of summer interns to discuss experience, reflections, or any topic of interest. The program also offers weekly meetings to discuss general topics of interest including quantitative thinking, the scientific method, research ethics, data analysis and interpretation, graphical analysis, oral and written presentations, resume building, and STEM careers and graduate study, as well as contemporary social issues related to science in general. REU interns will find that their first few weeks will be filled with intensive training in computational workshops, data organization, code documentation, scientific reasoning, and conduct. The 9-week summer program will be completed by the submission of formal written report on their research and an oral presentation.

provides a limited number of grants to Princeton freshmen and sophomores (and occasionally juniors) who have independently created or secured an unpaid faculty-mentored research internship over the summer. Proposals must come with a strong faculty endorsement to be considered for funding.

Summer research positions are arranged informally, with students approaching individual faculty members. After students have arranged summer employment with a faculty adviser, the Department Representative will award fellowships to selected students in acknowledgement of their initiative and achievements.   Preference is given to physics majors and prospective physics majors. 

The Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS) invites applications for its Undergraduate Fellowship Program. This competitive fellowship will provide recipients with a grant of up to $7,500 to pursue a project or initiative that promotes collective understanding of other countries and/or that addresses global challenges. Fellows will be part of a cohort that will meet several times throughout the academic year. Professor Rory Truex, director of the PIIRS UG Fellows program, will advise UG fellows on their projects and convene group meetings. The goal of the PIIRS Undergraduate Program is to provide students with the opportunity to build leadership skills and advance regional understanding by creating their own project or initiative. We are open to a range of proposals, including (but not limited to) the following: organizing talks or a conference, creating a documentary film, supporting an international service project, creating a podcast or Youtube channel, or anything else that improves regional knowledge and understanding at Princeton and beyond. The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 16 participating DOE laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

Princeton Astrophysics runs the Undergraduate Summer Research Program in which students carryout research projects under the supervision of faculty and postdoc advisors. Students selected for this program (similar to a REU program) can participate in projects with a range of levels of difficulty and sophistication, spanning all of experimental, observational, theoretical, and computational astronomy. In addition to gaining valuable experience in research, a great way to explore pursuing a career in the field, the program also organizes weekly colloquia and seminars to teach the students about many aspects of astronomical research.

iGEM is an international synthetic biology competition, where undergraduates design a project and engineer living cells to perform new functions. The Princeton BioE iGEM team is a 1-year time commitment for ~10 students. The team will participate in the competition by designing a research project over the spring semester and carrying it out in the summer, before traveling to present it at the iGEM Jamboree in the fall.

The Princeton Neuroscience Institute (PNI) is offering a summer internship program for highly motivated visiting undergraduates, providing education and hands-on research experience in the field of neuroscience. Participants will closely collaborate with students and faculty at the PNI on original research projects, and thereby gain invaluable first-hand experience on what it is like to be a neuroscientist. Summer interns will also participate in group educational activities, including weekly foundational overview lectures from PNI faculty, lab meetings with the researchers with whom they will work, journal club reading groups, plus special forums on topics such as career advice and graduate school application preparation.

Princeton University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in partnership with Intel, invites rising college juniors to apply to participate in a research experience program focused on computer security. We seek students interested in research and welcome applicants from all majors, with a preference for students majoring in computer engineering, electrical engineering and computer science. Research experience is not required. Students chosen for the program will spend the summer at Princeton University conducting computer security research under the guidance and mentorship of a Princeton faculty member, with active mentoring from researchers at Intel. Participants also have access to follow-up programming through Intel in the subsequent year.

The Derian Summer Internship is a faculty-mentored and community-informed research internship program administered by ProCES. Derian supports collaborations between faculty, undergraduate interns, and community experts. Interns support faculty in discipline-specific or discipline-spanning research or practicing artistry that is being conducted in collaboration with, and that directly benefits, locally, nationally, or internationally-located community partners and that facilitates the growth of students as community-engaged scholars.

The Education Research Section is announcing the Summer 2023 Research in Education Policy Internship. This full-time 7-week program, will run in June and July and is open to all Princeton undergraduates, will introduce interns to both quantitative and qualitative research in education through students assisting with ongoing Education Research Section research projects related to education policy. Activities will include participation in a weekly seminar series, training in multiple research methods used in education policy, and exposure to current issues in education policy and research.

The Scholars in the Nation’s Service Initiative (SINSI) is designed to encourage, support and prepare the nation’s top students to pursue careers in the U.S. government, both in international and domestic agencies. SINSI offers an internship program to Princeton sophomores and juniors and a graduate program to Princeton seniors and MPA1 students. Admitted interns will work with the program directors to find a 8-10 week internship the following summer in a SINSI-funded federal government internship. The graduate program includes the 2 year MPA program and between the first and second year, a SINSI funded 2-year fellowship at a federal government agency.

The Princeton University Office of the Dean for Research offers an eight-week internship in science writing for the general public. The intern writes news articles, feature articles, web content and other items in the style used by major newspapers and magazines. The intern may also produce podcasts and video segments, and use social media.

The Streicker International Fellows Fund was established in early 2015 by John H. Streicker ’64 to provide undergraduate students the opportunity to carry out substantive research or educational projects while immersed in a foreign culture. Streicker Fellows design their own projects or internships in conjunction with a hosting organization, in any academic or professional area, and in any geographic region outside of the United States. These projects or internships provide students with exceptional opportunities for intellectual and personal growth through a combination of work or research and immersion in a foreign culture.

Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard

The Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard (SROH) program connects undergraduates interested in a PhD with first-class researchers working in the life and physical sciences, humanities, and social sciences. This program is offered through GSAS and the  Leadership Alliance .

During this 10-week program, SROH interns conduct research and participate in discussions with Cambridge-based Harvard faculty, build their presentation and research discussion skills, and take part in field trips with other Harvard summer programs. Students in the program live in Harvard housing and enjoy access to the outstanding resources of the university.

Note that we also have funding for students interested in  atmospheric sciences  as part of the NSF-supported International Partnership in Cirrus Studies project.  Please see pire.geosci.uchicago.edu for information on participating faculty. Research focuses on modeling and measurement of high-altitude clouds.

PRISE  – The Program for Research in Science and Engineering (PRISE) is a summer residential community of Harvard undergraduates conducting research in science or engineering. By the application deadline students must be progressing toward finding a lab or research group but do not need to have finalized their research group or project. Participants must be in residence and be active participants for the entire duration of this ten week program.

Harvard Summer Research Program in Kidney Medicine (HSRPKM) - an introduction to nephrology (kidney medicine) for the undergraduates considering career paths spanning science and medicine. Summer Undergraduate Research in Global Health (SURGH)  offers Harvard undergraduates the opportunity to research critical issues in global health under the direction of a Harvard faculty or affiliate mentor. Students in SURGH receive housing in the Harvard Undergraduate Research Village and a stipend for living expenses. The summer savings requirement is also provided for students who are on financial aid. Throughout the summer, participants in SURGH have the opportunity to interact with students in the other on-campus research programs. 

Domestic and Global Health Fellowships (DGHI)  offers Harvard undergraduates the opportunity to work in field-based and office-based internships in both US health policy and global health. Sites can be domestic or international. Students receive a stipend to cover travel expenses to and from their site, living expenses, and local transportation. Unfortunately DGHI cannot cover the summer savings requirement for students who are on financial aid.

Cordeiro Summer Research Fellowship Registered GHHP students may apply for a Cordeiro Summer Research Fellowship for the summer before their senior year. Each year 12 to 15 fellowships allow students to get a head start on their senior theses or research projects related to global health or health policy without incurring major costs to themselves.

Summer Short Course in Organismic Plant Biology Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology  - The Harvard Forest Summer Research (REU) program is an intensive 11-week residential research and education experience at the Harvard Forest, a 3,700-acre outdoor laboratory and classroom in central Massachusetts. Students conduct research on the effects of natural and human disturbances on forest ecosystems, including global climate change, hurricanes, forest harvest, changing wildlife dynamics, and invasive species. The program includes a stipend, free housing, all meals, and the travel cost of one round trip to Harvard Forest. This program is open to not only Harvard undergraduates, but also students from all colleges and universities in the United States.

Harvard University Center for the Environment Undergraduate Fund  provides financial support for student research projects related to the environment. In the context of this program, 'environment' refers to understanding the relationships and balances of the natural and constructed world around us, with a particular emphasis on understanding how anthropogenic activities and policies affect the environment, including the intimate relationships between energy use and demand, environmental integrity and quality, human health, and climate change.  Two types of funding are available: 1) Funds for independent research (preference given to rising seniors seeking funds for senior honors thesis research) and 2) Research Assistantships (directed summer research experiences under Harvard faculty guidance). Award are intended to be applied towards living expenses (room, board), travel expenses related to research activities, and minor research expenses (for students doing independent research projects) for up to 10 weeks.  Awards are not intended to serve as a salary stipend for students.

Harvard School of Public Health Summer Program in Biostatistics & Computational Biology

The Summer Program is a relatively intensive 6-week program, during which qualified participants receive an interesting and enjoyable introduction to biostatistics, epidemiology, and public health research. This program is designed to expose undergraduates to the use of quantitative methods for biological, environmental, and medical research. 

MGH Summer Research Trainee Program

The goal of the MGH Summer Research Trainee Program (SRTP) is to inspire students who are underrepresented in medicine (URM) to consider careers in academic medicine by immersing them in cutting-edge research opportunities. Each summer, fifteen students are selected from a nationwide competition to join SRTP. Each student is assigned to a specific MGH laboratory, clinical site, health policy, or health services research area where they undertake an original research project under the mentorship and guidance of a Mass General Hospital (MGH) investigator. Assignments are carefully considered and are made with the student's research and career interests in mind. In addition to this unique research experience, students will gain knowledge through weekly didactic seminars, both at the MGH and at Harvard Medical School, attend career development workshops and networking event, and have opportunities for clinical shadowing.

MGHfC Digestive Disease Summer Research Program

Massachusetts General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) Digestive Disease Summer Research Program provides support for 10 students at the undergraduate or medical school level. Each student will be matched with a research mentor to perform an independent research project focused on digestive diseases over a 10-week period during the summer months within a laboratory or collaborating laboratory of the MGHfC. MGHfC collaborating laboratories at MGH possess unique expertise in engineering and computational sciences in support of various projects centered on digestive disease research.

Broad Institute at Harvard Summer Program

Broad Summer Research Program BSRP is a nine-week undergraduate research program designed for students with an interest in genomics and a commitment to research. Students spend the summer in a laboratory at the Broad Institute, engaged in rigorous scientific research under the guidance of experienced scientists and engineers. Underrepresented minority students enrolled in a four-year college are eligible to apply.

Broad Summer Scholars Program BSSP invites a small number of exceptional and mature high school students with a keen interest in science to spend six weeks at the Broad Institute, working side-by-side with scientists in the lab on cutting-edge research. Rising seniors who live within commuting distance to the Broad Institute are eligible to apply.

DaRin Butz Research Internship Program   The program gives undergraduates in the life sciences a unique opportunity to experience research from start to finish while gaining training and connections among scientific colleagues. DaRin Butz Interns will not only conduct research, but will also develop their project with their advisors and be guided through the process of sharing their research through written reports and oral presentations, an important component of scientific research.

Harvard Medical School Undergraduate Summer Internship in Systems Biology

E3 Evolution, Ecology and Environment REU

We are seeking rising sophomores, juniors and seniors majoring in the life sciences who would like to join a new Research Experience for Undergraduates program based in the  Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology (OEB)  at Harvard University. Members of the program will enjoy cutting edge research experiences within the context of a strong mentorship community made up of faculty, graduate students, and peers. In addition, members will participate in a professional development program that is aimed at preparing students for the graduate school application process, building confidence to succeed in graduate school, and exploring long-term career opportunities. These professional development activities will include attendance of the annual  Leadership Alliance National Symposium  (LANS) research and mentoring conference. The E3 REU is part of a larger umbrella program, hosted by the Harvard GSAS  Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard (SROH) .

The 10-week  Systems Biology Summer Internship Program  enables interns to work on research projects spanning many scientific fields, including systems biology, biophysics, bioinformatics, genomics, applied mathematics, and computation. 

McLean Hospital Mental Health Summer Research Program

This competitive program seeks to  engage scientific curiosity ,  create research opportunities , and  promote academic success in mental health fields  for promising young  Black, Indigenous and underrepresented People of Color (BIPOC) interested in science .  We had our first, very successful MMHRSP last summer, and applications are now open for next summer. MMHRSP is an intensive, 10-week, full-time mental health/neuroscience research experience at McLean Hospital. McLean is the primary psychiatric teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and is located in Belmont, MA ( https://www.mcleanhospital.org/ ).  Chosen Fellows will receive a $7,000 stipend for the 10-week program.

Cognitive Neurosciences at the University of Trento  - Trento, Italy

This eight-week program at the University of Trento, Italy, organized by the Mind/Brain/Behavior Initiative, provides students a unique opportunity to study the mind/brain. International Summer Undergraduate Research in Global Health (I-SURGH)  I-SURGH offers Harvard undergraduates the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge global health research in an international setting. Students in I-SURGH receive a stipend to cover travel costs to and from their site, living expenses, and local transportation. Unfortunately Harvard Global Health Institute cannot cover the summer savings requirement for I-SURGH students who are on financial aid.  Once accepted to their site, participants in I-SURGH meet with a Harvard faculty member to develop a project that falls within the research agenda of the site. Throughout the summer, students work with a local mentor who supervises their daily work. While all returning Harvard College undergraduates are eligible to apply for an I-SURGH placement, preference is given to sophomores and juniors. 

The Office of Career Services (OCS) awards funding for research abroad, including both Harvard Summer School Study Abroad and non-Harvard International programs.  The  David Rockefeller International Experience Grant , which is a need-based grant aimed at students who have not previously received Harvard international funding, supports many of these awards. Award amounts vary. The purpose of the grant is to afford all students the opportunity to take part in a significant international experience, regardless of financial background. Herchel Smith-Harvard Undergraduate Science Research Program  – Primarily directed toward students intending to pursue research-intensive concentrations and post-graduate study in the sciences. Booth Fund Fellowship  - For seniors to engage in a program of travel, study, research or observation that will further expand and challenge an existing interest in a particular field. 

Rosenkrantz Travel Grants

This grant program is exclusively for concentrators in History and Science.  It allows motivated rising juniors  (who have completed sophomore tutorial) and who are concentrating in history and science to devise a short but meaningful plan of travel and academic discovery in the United States or abroad. This grant program may serve as the first stage of research towards a senior thesis or junior research paper, but there is no requirement that it do so. The only requirement is a sincere passion for adventure and exploration, and a willingness to prepare well for the experience.

David Rockefeller International Experience Grant The David Rockefeller International Experience Grants were established in 2009 by David Rockefeller SB ’36, LLD ’69 to give students the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the world beyond the U.S. or their home country, and to learn about other countries and peoples by spending time immersed in another culture. The purpose of the grant is to afford all students the opportunity to take part in a significant international experience, regardless of financial constraints.

University research programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The research opportunities below are listed to give students an idea of the opportunities available globally. Students apply directly to the host institution and are responsible for the costs and meeting their deadlines, however some of the opportunities come with scholarships and stipends attached. Additionally, students are encouraged to apply for a  short-term mobility bursary  to support their activities. If student cannot find the right placement from what is listed, they are are encouraged to investigate other countries, institutions and organisations to discover more programmes (and can still apply for a short-term mobility bursary ).

The Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) provides an opportunity for undergraduate students from overseas universities to undertake research attachments for eight weeks at CUHK during the summer. Students will conduct research under the supervision of a CUHK faculty member from various academic disciplines, including Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science and Social Science. Early applications are strongly encouraged to secure places in preferred projects.

SJTU offers research projects for undergraduate students across different fields that can include mechanical engineering, electronic information and electronic engineering, agriculture and pharmacy. The internships are usually six weeks and students will also have chance to collaborate on the paper-writing process and serve as a co-author on a publication.

RISE Germany offers undergraduate students from North American, British and Irish universities the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions. RISE Germany is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.Students are matched with a host university or institute according to their area of interest (biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, or a closely related field). Host universities and institutes provide housing assistance and match students with Ph.D. student mentors. German language is not required and the working language will be in English. 

Dates:  10 - 12 weeks between May - July 2024

Programme Fees:  a monthly scholarship of 934 Euros. DAAD provides health insurance, accident and personal liability insurance. All interns are invited to the three-day RISE Germany meeting in Heidelberg at the beginning of July and will receive an allowance of 160 Euros for travel to the meeting.The scholarship also covers international travel costs with an international travel subsidy.

Equipped with specialized technologies such as drones, 3D printers, flight simulators and a clustered supercomputer, the ÉTS labs and chairs enables studetns to carry out unique research projects in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, health technologies, aerospace and transport electrification. Research internships, which are supervised by a professor from one of the Chairs or research units, usually last from three to 12 months.

The University of Tokyo Summer Internship Program in Kashiwa (UTSIP Kashiwa) provides hands-on research internship opportunities in the fields of natural sciences and social sciences. Alongside the period of research, lectures are also offered from world-leading researchers at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences. All participants will be assigned to a laboratory in their desired area of interest and will conduct a research project under the guidance of a faculty member or senior graduate students. Participants will also experience Japanese culture and world-leading Japanese technology through weekend events and a field trip.

UBC welcomes international students at undergraduate or postgraduate level to conduct full-time research for a defined period of time, under the supervision of a UBC faculty member. Since 2014, UBC has welcomed over 2500 VIRS students from over 650 universities and 85 different countries. The VIRS program is managed by Go Global under the Office of the Vice Provost, International. Please note that it is the responsibility of the individual applicant to identify, contact, and obtain approval from a UBC faculty member who will be their VIRS supervisor.

UCL has been invited by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to nominate up to 10 outstanding Master's students to apply for a research scholarship place on their 10-week summer intensive research training in Hong Kong.

Eligibility - Current UCL Masters students holding an undergraduate degree with first class honours (equivalent to a UK 1st/Hong Kong CGPA of at least 3.7-4.0/A). - Students with an undergraduate classification of a high UK 2:1/Hong Kong CGPA 3.6, may still be considered, but priority will go to students with a 1st.  - Research can be in any of the areas supported by HKU's faculties:  https://gradsch.hku.hk/prospective_students/research_areas.

The TISS in Mumbai is hosting a four-week programme for students who are passionate about promoting gender equality in their respective fields.The programme will explore the importance of taking a gender perspective into the development and implementation of public policy and the likely consequences of gender-blind policies. Students will gain an understanding of how institutions and structures are gendered and how this might affect the implementation of a public policy.

During this 10-week program, Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard (SROH) interns conduct research and participate in discussions with Cambridge-based Harvard faculty, build their presentation and research discussion skills, and take part in field trips with other Harvard summer programs. Students in the program live in Harvard housing and enjoy access to the outstanding resources of the university.

The program is funded by Harvard Griffin GSAS, Harvard Molecules, Cells, and Organisms , Harvard Genes, Ecosystems, Organisms , and the Leadership Alliance . 

Note that we also have funding for students interested in atmospheric sciences as part of the NSF-supported International Partnership in Cirrus Studies project, a collaboration including the University of Chicago, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Washington, and multiple European institutions. The University of Chicago has information on participating faculty . Research focuses on modeling and measurement of high-altitude clouds.

Applicants in the social sciences and humanities should feel free to write to the SROH program and indicate which Harvard faculty they have identified in their area(s) of interest and whether or not they have been in contact with said faculty.

NEW! The Department of the Classics would welcome applicants interested in fields related to Greco-Roman antiquity, including, but not limited to Republican and Imperial Latin literature, Cicero and Roman oratory, Latin historiography, reception of Latin literature, and the history of classical scholarship.

Room, Board, and Stipends

The in-person version of the program covers travel to and from the program, housing, and typically a stipend of $3,500 and a food allowance of $1,500. Students participating in MARC or similar programs that provide summer support are welcome to apply. Students are required to participate for the full period of the program.

Summer Programs for Undergraduate Research (SPUR)

Program purpose.

The UCLA Summer Programs for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) offer upper division undergraduate students with outstanding academic potential the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors on research projects.  The programs are designed for students who wish to learn more about the graduate school experience and possibly pursue an academic career in teaching and research.  Opportunities are available in virtually all academic fields (e.g., arts, humanities, social sciences, life sciences, health sciences, physical sciences, etc.).

Student participants in many SPUR programs will work with a faculty mentor with special expertise and interests matched, as closely as possible, to the student’s research interests and career goals. Most, but not all, SPUR programs pair students with a faculty mentor.  Students will either assist the faculty member in an ongoing research project or work collaboratively with the mentor in designing a new project of mutual interest.

Most SPUR programs feature seminars on:

  • strategies for enhancing success in applying to graduate school
  • graduate school funding opportunities
  • opportunities for informal discussion with UCLA graduate students
  • academic career opportunities
  • cultural and educational activities

As a condition of acceptance into the program, program participants will be asked after their departure to update information on their educational and career activities. This tracking is done solely to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. It is critical that we be able to conduct this long-term evaluation in order to maintain continuing funding for the programs. The information collected remains strictly confidential.

2024 Program Dates

Most programs run eight weeks, from June 2024 to August 2024. Some programs in the sciences, technological, engineering and mathematics fields run 10 weeks, from June 2024 to September 2024.  One program in the humanities and social sciences runs six weeks, from June 2024 to August 2024.

The tentative dates for SPUR 2024 are June 23 to August 17 (8-week programs) and June 23 to August 30 (10-week programs).

All application materials and supporting documents must be  received by March 31, 2024 unless otherwise stated in the program description.  Preference will be given to applications that are completed by the program’s deadline. Notification of decisions will be made by the end of May 2024.  Please contact the individual program coordinators for questions regarding the application and application deadline.

Amgen Scholars Program

Application Deadline: February 1, 2024

The Amgen Scholars Program is a national program to increase learning and networking opportunities for students committed to pursuing a career in science or engineering. Students interested in summer research in any area of biomedical science, chemistry, bioengineering or chemical engineering are encouraged to apply. Students will be paired with a UCLA faculty mentor if the student does not already have one. Program typically includes stipend; housing; meals; 2-day biotechnology in Los Angeles; luncheons with faculty; workshops; seminars and poster presentations.

  • For undergraduates enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the U.S., Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories.
  • For sophomores (with 4 quarters or 3 semesters of college experience), juniors and non-graduating seniors (who are returning in the fall to continue their undergraduate experience).
  • Must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or above.
  • Must be interested in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.

Bioscience Scholars Program

The Bioscience Scholars Program (formerly known as SPUR LABS) provides a rigorous eight or ten-week research training experience for undergraduates with interests in a broad range of bioscience disciplines– —from molecules to organisms and from basic to translational science. Exceptional research training, integrated with professional development activities, will prepare students to succeed in leading Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. programs. The program aims to contribute to diversity, inclusion, and the elimination of barriers to participation in bioscience research careers and is designed for students participating in honors research programs that foster transition to doctoral programs (e.g., Minority Access to Research Careers, MARC). Participants receive a stipend & food allowance of $4,000 for 8 weeks or $5,000 for 10 weeks. Participants will be matched with an appropriate faculty member based on research interests. There are over 400 faculty mentors in ten bioscience research areas.

A complete application includes the submission of the online application form as well as all supplementary materials, including two letters of recommendation and a personal statement that describes your bioscience research interests and any research experience, including how these interests and experiences have shaped your personal and professional goals, and how Bioscience Scholars Program would help you meet these goals. B.I.G. Summer (Bruins In Genomics) 8-week Summer Research Program for Masters and Undergraduate Students

Bruins-in-Genomics (B.I.G. Summer) is an 8-week full-time immersion program for undergraduates interested in learning how to read and analyze genes and genomes. Through this program students will have the opportunity to experience graduate-level coursework, and learn the latest cutting-edge research, tools and methods used by leading scientists to solve real-world problems.

Applicants must be:

  • A U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or F-1 visa holder
  • Be a rising junior or senior
  • have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • have some familiarity with at least one programming language (e.g. python, pearl, R, Java, MAT-LAB, C++, etc.); preferably have taken bioinformatics or biostatistics courses

Brain Research Institute Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (BRI-SURE)

The UCLA Brain Research Institute (BRI) sponsors a summer undergraduate research experience (BRI-SURE) pathway program for students currently participating in the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) and other honors research programs whose goal is to increase diversity. This program solicits applications from students from universities and colleges across the nation. BRI-SURE Pathway is an 8-week, intensive summer research-training program for exceptional students interested in pursuing research careers in Neuroscience or Physiology. The program is designed to provide a rigorous, in-depth research experience to prepare participants for top-quality Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. graduate programs. The BRI-SURE residential program offers a summer stipend. The BRI-SURE non-residential program does not offer a summer stipend. Although we anticipate an on-campus summer experience, we may have to resort to an online-only Summer Research Experience for 2022.

  • Applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0;

California State University (CSU) Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars Program

This program is restricted to undergraduate and master’s-level students in the California State University Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Program. The Program is designed to increase the pool of potential university faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of CSU students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Each of the selected CSU Sally Casanova pre-doctoral scholars works closely during the academic year with a CSU faculty sponsor to develop an overall plan leading ultimately to enrollment in a doctoral program. Each of these plans is tailored to specific goals and educational objectives of the student. The Program places special emphasis on increasing the number of CSU students who enter doctoral programs at one of the University of California institutions. Summer Program includes: stipend, on-campus housing or housing allowance, meal allowance, funds toward roundtrip transportation cost, GRE test preparation, workshops and oral presentations.

Community College Field Biology Alliance

Application Deadline: February 16, 2024

This is an 8-month research internship designed for community college students. Student interns are assigned a graduate and undergraduate research mentor and meet remotely on the first Saturday of each month from May to June to design a field biology-based research project. In July we travel as a group to a remote field station for 7 days to enact the planned intern research projects. The program culminates with student research presentations in December.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Full-time community college student.
  • Interest in environmental science, ecology, animal behavior, botany, and similar fields.
  • Ability to attend all monthly meetings and field excursion (all expenses covered by the program).

Cultivating Interest in Research Careers (CIRC)

The Cultivating Interest in Research Careers (CIRC) program is a partnership between University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU). The program starts with a ten-week summer research program at UCLA, AND extends into a year-long continuum. The goal of CIRC is to provide community college students underrepresented​ in medicine and science (UIMS), such as African American, Latinx, Native American, Pacific​ Islander, disabled and socioeconomically disadvantaged students, with hands-on exposure and training in scientific research aligned with the scientific mission of the NHLBI.

The CIRC program will provide these community college students with educational workshops, near-peer mentoring, and skills to help them transfer to a 4-year college or university and ultimately be prepared to pursue a health profession or scientific research career.

  • A current high school senior who has taken at least a semester of community college classes and plans on transferring to a community college in the Fall,
  • OR Current community college student attending a community college in Los Angeles County (Must have at least a year of classes to complete before transferring to a four-year college or university) attending a community college in Los Angeles County
  • Qualify as a student from an underrepresented group as defined by either A OR B:

A) Identify as a member of one of the following racial/ethnic groups:

  • Black or African American
  • Hispanic or Latinx
  • American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander

B) Have a disadvantaged family background, defined as either 1 OR 2 below :

  • having been or currently being homeless, were or currently are in the foster care system, were eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program for two or more years, have/had no parents or legal guardians who completed a bachelor’s degree (e.g., “First-Generation”),
  • were or currently are eligible for Federal Pell grants, received support from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children coming from an educational environment such as that found in certain rural or inner-city environments that has demonstrably and directly inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to develop and participate in a research career.

D) Have taken at least one college course in the general domains listed below and have composite grade point average of 3.2 or above in this coursework:

The Diversity Project

The Diversity Project is a 10-week* research-intensive summer program funded by the UC-HBCU initiative and the National Science Foundation focused on increasing participation of underrepresented minority students in marine and evolutionary biology. Through fieldwork and laboratory training, students will learn an integrative approach towards the study of the ecology and biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems at the Gump South Pacific Research Station on the island of Mo’orea, French Polynesia.  TDP complements student-centered fieldwork and laboratory research with mentoring on career development, ranging from successfully applying to graduate school to choosing a career. TDP faculty also work with students to publish their research and to present their work at national and international meetings. Some funding dedicated to students from Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). *Note: This year’s program begins Monday, June 5, 2023.

Requirements:

  • Current sophomore or junior standing, or non-graduating seniors
  • Great attitude and willingness to learn SCUBA diving

HBCU: Evolutionary Medicine – Pathways to PhDs

The HBCU: Evolutionary Medicine-Pathways to PhDs program is open to undergraduate juniors and seniors from HBCUs.  Participants will work on Evolutionary Medicine topics at UCLA.  Evolutionary Medicine is the study of how evolutionary and ecological principles affect medicine and medical applications, and how medical and clinical problems generate new research questions and ideas in evolution.  Evolutionary medicine is fast emerging as an important new field in the biomedical sciences.  Representing an interdisciplinary subject that combines ecology and evolutionary biology, anthropology, psychology, zoology, systems biology and microbiology with medicine, the field of evolutionary medicine has the potential to transform the way biomedical researches and doctors examine medical questions, conduct biomedical research, and treat patience.  Summer interns will work closely with a principal investigator (PI) from UCLA’s Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department and a PI from the David Geffen School of Medicine.  Application requirements:

Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) U*STAR Program

The Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) U*STAR Program is a two-year, NIH-funded, undergraduate honors program that seeks to increase the number of biomedical scientists from diverse backgrounds that significantly impact health-related research. The program specifically seeks to strengthen the skills and research training of students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. This program is appropriate for students interested in pursuing a PhD or dual PhD degree upon completion of their baccalaureate degree.

The MARC Program offers research training, financial support, mentoring, networking opportunities and academic preparation for strong and motivated students. The UCLA MARC program is one of the longest-standing MARC programs at Research I universities across the nation, and graduates from the program have embarked on highly successful careers.

  • 3.2 GPA at the time of application; borderline GPAs also encouraged to apply
  • Junior or senior standing (completed 90 or more units) by the time that the student will begin as a MARC trainee, AND have two years remaining at UCLA at the start of the program

Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Writing and Research Training Program

The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Writing and Research Training Program at UCLA is an intensive writing and research program for 20 current Mellon Mays Fellows from participating Mellon Mays colleges and universities. Fellows participate in a rigorous scholarly writing and research methodology course, individual and group mentoring sessions, workshops, events, and a final research colloquium. The program also includes on-campus housing and a meal allowance.

  • Applicants must be current Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows at their colleges or universities
  • For rising juniors (first-year MMUF students) or seniors (second-year MMUF students)
  • Please note that students will NOT be paired directly with a faculty mentor but will take an intensive writing and research course.  Students will NOT take a GRE preparation course as part of the program.

Summer Training for Excellence in Education Research (STEER)

The Summer Training for Excellence in Education Research (STEER) program has been a successful staple of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS) at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Through participation in the program, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) students and faculty, and GSE&IS faculty share in a research apprenticeship experience that has contributed to STEER students’ admittance to some of our nation’s finest graduate programs including the UC system. In the proposed effort, our aims are to continue to: (1) Develop relationships between the UCs and HBCUs, (2) Prepare students for UC graduate application, and (3) Prepare and mentor a cohort of tremendously talented students to conduct educational research in competitive UC programs and beyond.

University of California Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees (UC LEADS) 2nd Summer

This program is restricted to current University of California undergraduate students in the UC system-wide UC LEADS Program. In line with the goals of the two-year program, the 2nd summer research program seeks to develop the students by providing research and educational experiences to further prepare them to assume positions of leadership in academia, industry, government and public service. UC LEADS students who are considering UCLA for graduate studies/PhD should seriously consider applying to UCLA’s summer program as a way to familiarize themselves with the campus and to network with potential mentors. The UCLA UC LEADS Summer Program includes: GRE test preparation, workshops and seminars, and the opportunity to present summer research findings at the end of summer symposium/poster session.

  • Academic Level: Open to 2nd-Summer UC LEADS students (those from other UC campuses who have completed their first year in the program).
  • Open to Depts/Disciplines: Open to all departments and disciplines in Science, Engineering & Math.

UCLA-HSI Superior Opportunities for Maximizing Access to Neuroscience (SOMA)

The SOMA-Neuroscience program supports a deeper Hispanic/LatinX participation in neuroscience, and ultimately the pursuit of a neuroscience doctoral degree. Each summer, we will select and invite a small group of interested students (3-7 students annually) from our partner Hispanic-Serving Institutions, or HSIs, for an 8-week summer immersive, in-person experience at UCLA to do research in a host laboratory. Open to undergraduate students.

The requirements for acceptance into the program include:

  • Must be student at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) institution.
  • A major in one of the natural sciences, including Psychology
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0

UCLA-HBCU Neuroscience Pathways Program

The UCLA-HBCU Neuroscience Pathways program is open to undergraduate students that attend historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States. The goals of this program are: 1) to increase the impact on students and faculty at both HBCU partner institutions and UCLA and, 2) to incentivize quality mentorship of the interns in our UCLA host labs. We will engage in active research and teaching partnerships that accompany students before and beyond the 8-week internship at UCLA.

A group of interested students, selected jointly by the HBCU partner institutions and UCLA will be invited to spend 8 weeks at UCLA doing research in an appropriate host laboratory. Ideally, the research at UCLA will be commensurate with the experience at the HBCU partner institution. We will engage in active research and teaching partnerships that accompany students before and beyond the 8-week internship at UCLA of mentorship in the lab. Interns will be mentored and trained by the faculty members who run the respective labs. Additionally, we will host one “chaperone” HBCU faculty member per year to accompany the student for the first week of the internship- which is intended to foster both scientific collaboration and quality mentoring. To incentivize graduate studies at UCLA for HBCU interns, the BRI will offer a full 5-year stipend annually for at least one student, annually, who applies for and is accepted by the NSIDP. Furthermore, we will conduct outcome studies and publish them in a peer-reviewed journal, similar to other BRI outreach efforts. In short, we will take an innovative and holistic approach by providing not only a summer opportunity but by following the student before and after through online tools.

The UCLA Neuroscience Scholars program is a 10-week intensive summer research training experience for exceptional UCLA sophomore and junior undergraduates that are committed to pursuing a graduate degree in neuroscience. Neuroscience Scholars will be paired with a UCLA faculty mentor based on their research interests. Students will conduct discovery research in the laboratories of their faculty mentors. The program also includes: on-campus housing, $5000 stipend, journal clubs, lunches with faculty, career development workshops, seminars, and poster presentations.

  • For sophomore and junior undergraduates in Neuroscience, Physiological Sciences, Psychobiology and other neurobiology-related fields.
  • Must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or above
  • Must be able to devote full-time effort over the entire duration of the 10 week program

The UCLA Public Health Scholars Training Program provides undergraduate students the opportunity to explore the field of public health through hands-on training, structured workshops, group excursions, and leadership and professional development. Located in Los Angeles, the program offers scholars the opportunity to train at UCLA, to explore public health in one of the most diverse counties in the US, and to experience the city’s vibrant culture.   • Applicants must be: Community college graduates or transfers to four-year institutions OR In a four-year institution and have completed at least two years of undergraduate education (regardless of credit standing) by the start of the program OR Recent college graduates (Fall or Winter 2024 or Spring 2024) who have not enrolled in a graduate program by the start of the program.

  • Ability to be present in LA and participate in program activities from June 21 – August 14, 2024

Diversity in Vision Science Undergraduate Summer Research Program

Application deadline: April 15, 2024

This research experience is a full-time, 8-week immersive research experience in vision science at the Stein Eye Institute, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). This program is designed to increase the diversity of undergraduates in vision science through dedicated faculty mentorship, hands-on research training/interactive learning, and career development opportunities. The program is open to undergraduate students with disadvantages backgrounds in the Greater Los Angeles Area in 2024.

Students will have the opportunity to learn and work on an original research project in laboratories with research focuses including but not limited to:

1. Understanding of vision and ophthalmology research and their importance in advancing the understanding of the visual pathways, developing novel therapeutic in various eye diseases, including glaucoma, degenerative retinal disorders, and corneal diseases.

2. Understanding the use of various state of art technology in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine in ophthalmology.

Students learn how to be a scientist in weekly lab meetings and will have the opportunity to present their findings at a UCLA scientific poster session as well as at their home institution. Additionally, students will engage in social activities and career development workshops with other summer research students on UCLA campus, thereby expanding their science community and faculty/peer network.

  • Express an intention to pursue a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. (or other professional joint degree) in a bioscience field.
  • Should not admitted or enrolled in a graduate program (M.S. or Ph.D.) at the time the program begins.
  • Minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0. preferred
  • Reside in the Los Angeles area.

SUIP 2024

Summer Undergraduate Internship Program (SUIP)

Welcome to suip.

The University of Pennsylvania Summer Undergraduate Internship Program is a 10-week intensive summer research opportunity for undergraduate students, especially those who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense, interested in pursuing careers in scholarly research. Interns will be matched with a Principal Investigator (PI) based on shared research interests. Throughout their time at Penn, interns will work with PIs and other lab mentors to develop laboratory and research skills essential for future graduate school experiences. In addition to laboratory work, interns will participate in seminars that will enrich their understanding of science, participate in professional development workshops, graduate school preparation seminars, and have the opportunity to present at the SUIP Symposium. SUIP is designed for students who aim to pursue a PhD or an MD-PhD in biomedical studies.

Summer Program Dates

The 2024 program dates are Monday, June 3, 2024 to Friday, August 9, 2024 (tentative move-in dates: Saturday, June 1, 2024 and Sunday, June 2, 2024). Participants can expect to engage in lab and program activities for approximately 40 hours during the week.

Participants must commit to participating for the duration of the program dates.

Eligibility

Residency requirement: The program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents only. We cannot accept applications from international students who do not meet residency requirements at this time. Applicants must be enrolled in a four-year college for the fall semester after the program ends. Graduating seniors are not eligible to participate. Although it is not required for applicants to have prior research experience, preference is given to applicants who will have completed their sophomore or junior year. Students must be able to attend the full 10-week program. Individuals from under resourced backgrounds that have been historically excluded from the biomedical sciences including but not limited to first generation college students, socioeconomically disadvantaged, attend small liberal arts colleges and universities with limited research opportunities, live with a disability, and/or who bring diversity to biomedical sciences by reason of their culture, class, background, work and life experiences, skills and interests are encouraged to apply for the program.

Compensation

Each intern receives:

  • a competitive stipend ($5,500)
  • On-campus housing,
  • meal plans, and
  • transportation costs for one round trip to the University of Pennsylvania.

SUIP Affiliated Programs

SUIP-DAPPG (Diversity Action Plan in Genomics), SUIP-CCI (Center for Cell and Immunotherapies), and SUIP-CFAR (Center for AIDS Research) are affiliated programs with SUIP. Students are selected to the affiliated programs based on their research interests. Applicants do not need to complete a separate application to be considered for these programs. All compensation is the same as the general SUIP. Applicants who apply to an affiliate program will also be considered for the general SUIP program.

If you would like to be considered for an affiliate program, please indicate which one in your personal statement. If admitted into an affiliated program, students still will participate in all SUIP activities and will be offered additional research specific content and activities based on the affiliate group.

SUIP-DAPPG (Diversity Action Plan for Penn Genomics)

The aim of the Diversity Action Plan for PENN Genomics (DAPPG) program is to increase the number of underrepresented students choosing a career in genome sciences and genomic medicine by providing opportunity for hands-on genomics research. The program supports summer research internships and post-baccalaureate programs, designed to augment student’s training for application to professional degrees.

The Center for Cellular Immunotherapies hosts a Summer Undergraduate Internship Program in cancer and cellular immunotherapies. Participating laboratories have the general goal of understanding how the immune system interacts with cancer and developing interventions to improve anti-tumor immunity. This field of study represents an intersection of cancer biology, immunology, cellular and molecular biology, and bioengineering.

SUIP-CFAR (Center for AIDS Research)

SUIP-CFAR (Center For AIDS Research) Scholars will engage in mentored HIV/AIDS research. Research topics include HIV basic/translational science, clinical/behavioral science, implementation science, and HIV prevention research. SUIP-CFAR scholars will learn key concepts in the biological, clinical, behavioral, and community-based AIDS research and will build their professional skills.

Applications for SUIP 2024 open on October 1st, 2023 via the Penn application. All applications are due on February 1st, 2024 by 11:59 pm Eastern Time. All components of the application, including letters of recommendation, must be received by the deadline. Incomplete applications or applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered. 

Applicants who wish to apply through the Leadership Alliance, the application portal opened on November 1, 2023 and will close on February 1st, 2024 at 11:59PM.

The  letters of recommendation  should include at least one from a research mentor, preferably the most recent one. The  community statement  should describe how your personal perspectives will shape and be shaped by engagement with the Penn community.

Seminar Series

SUIP sponsors the Summer Seminar Series, a sequence of talks about timely issues in biomedical sciences presented by distinguished Biomedical Graduate Studies faculty. The seminars provide interns with an opportunity to discover the breadth of research taking place at Penn and beyond.

Social Events

Interns enjoy a variety of events including concerts and performances, trips to local museums, visits to historical sites, and social events with current graduate students and program staff. The University of Pennsylvania has several summer programs and there are many free events on campus that are open to our interns. Philadelphia is a great city to visit, and an even better place to live.

Expanding Our Campus

The state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Complex expands Harvard's campus with an additional 500,000 square feet of classrooms, active learning labs, maker space, and common areas.

During the academic year, you can conduct research for credit, as determined by the director of undergraduate study in each department.

The  Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program  (MMUF) provides a term-time stipend, as well as the option for summer research funds, to a group of approximately 20 juniors and seniors, selected in the spring of their sophomore years.

Performing research can be a very enriching and transformative part of your undergraduate experience at the College. You may encounter it as part of your coursework, but it can also be something you do outside of the classroom as a way to gain practical skills, learn about methods of inquiry and contribute actively to the advancement of study in your field.

Finding a research opportunity will require you to be proactive, build faculty relationships , and use key resources . It may be good to start by charting your personal goals and interests in order to help you identify opportunities that are a match for them. Remember to give yourself plenty of time for your search and to remain flexible and open-minded through the process. Engaging with the research community at Harvard is possible for students in all concentrations. Whether you have participated in research work previously, or are just getting started, there are opportunities designed to meet you where you are right now.

Research opportunities come in many formats and happen in a variety of settings. They often start off as a question that someone wants to explore more fully. Faculty, for example, initiate research projects designed for this purpose. It might also begin with you! In your studies, for example, you may have noticed a lack of knowledge or a lack of recent work on a particular topic that interests you. With the guidance of a faculty mentor, you could be the person to explore and find answers to fill in the void of missing information.

Depending on the scale of a project, you might find yourself working on a team or operating on your own and coordinating your efforts with those of a faculty mentor. This work may take place on campus, at other domestic locations, or even internationally, during term-time or over the course of the summer.

Some common formats of research experiences for undergraduates include:

Course-based Research

Courses (existing or independent study). Many courses at Harvard and neighboring institutions (where you can cross-register ) have a strong research component. There is even the option for you to design an independent study course. To explore these options, the best starting point is with a concentration adviser knowledgeable about course offerings and policies in that concentration. You can also visit the Advising Programs Office  (APO) to connect with undergraduate concentration advisers.

Research Assistantships

There are many opportunities to work as a research assistant on an existing project. A research assistantship is an excellent opportunity for students with little experience to get their first exposure to research. Research assistantship postings can be found on department webpages, at research centers, as well as on the Student Employment Office Job Board . You can also check with nearby hospitals and research groups, in addition to faculty and grad students. If you have never contacted research investigators before, check out our tips on how to effectively reach out to faculty .

Research Programs

In lieu of performing research via a course or an assistantship, you might consider looking at a research program. Depending on the program, you might work on a project designed by a member of faculty or propose your own question to pursue under the guidance of a faculty mentor. URAF summer programs, for example, are designed to correspond to specific academic areas (i.e., STEM, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences), forming a cohort of fellows working on various topics in their area of interest.

URAF research programs are offered on an annual basis, with pre-set start- and end-times, and require formal applications with strict deadlines. These programs often have different eligibility criteria (i.e., GPA, class year, research experience). Some programs require previous field-specific experience, while other are designed for newcomers to that particular field of study. Many research programs include various forms of financial support (e.g. stipends, accommodation, etc.) as well as opportunities for community-building and intellectual growth.

Thesis Research

Each concentration has its own requirements for thesis research, including topics allowed, prerequisites, timing, and who can supervise your work. If you are interested in thesis research, connect with advisers appointed by the concentrations for guiding undergraduates—information about concentration advisers can be found on the APO website. Some questions to ask yourself when looking for a program are:

  • Where do you want to be?
  • What type of research would you like to do?
  • Does the program offer additional support or programming that may be helpful?
  • How long do you intend to do research?

NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

The  National Science Foundation  has a  search page that includes the contact information for Research Experiences for Undergraduates summer research programs. You will need to contact the specific program for application information. Additionally, programs may submit their specific application information for publishing in the list below.

These are all fully funded opportunities including programs sponsored by NSF, NASA, NIH, etc.  They also have a selection of resources to help you strengthen your applications.

Summer research opportunities for undergraduates.

Summer is a great time to get involved in research, whether it's in a field you intend to study seriously, or in one you just want to try out. There are many opportunities for funding, as you'll see below, and you are encouraged to take advantage of these. Note that most REU application deadlines run from mid January to early March , so you should get started in early January (or late in the fall semester if some of the early deadlines mentioned below are relevant). In addition to being a fun way to spend your summer, a research job will (1) allow you to learn lots of things, (2) give you a flavor of what grad school and industry are like, if these are in your plans, and (3) allow various scientists to get to know you and your work, which is always a good thing (actually, a necessary thing) when it comes time to obtain letters of recommendation. Some programs require you to have completed your sophomore or junior year, but there are also plenty that are available for freshmen. So if you're interested in doing research, there's no excuse for not getting started early. Start searching around, an join in the fun! Your summer research can be funded in five basic ways. The funds may come from:

  • An REU program (this money comes from the NSF).
  • Other organized programs that aren't REUs.
  • The Physics Department.
  • Various Harvard fellowships/programs.
  • A specific faculty member (that is, from internal lab funds).

In more detail, these five basic ways to get funding are:

  • REU Programs: Professors throughout the country can apply for "Research Experiences for Undergraduates" (REU) grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Undergraduates in turn can apply to these programs for the opportunity to do summer research. There are many programs in a variety of scientific fields. The application deadlines generally run from mid January to early March. The webpage with the list of all the existing programs is: NSF's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program There are lots and lots of fields listed here, including Physics, Materials Research, Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Biology, and many more. So don't just look at the Physics ones! Programs are sometimes added late to the list, so check it periodically for changes.  

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) at National Labs, funded by DOE Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory DOE Scholars Program Caltech's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) and other programs Perimeter Scholars International Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard (SROH) Summer Internship Programs at Fermilab Research Internships in Science and Engineering (in Germany) NIST SURF NASA Internships Lincoln Labs/MIT Princeton Plasma Physics Lab Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astonomy Wolfram Research (Mathematica) National Security Agency NCAR Computational Science Mignone Center for Career Success  

  • The Harvard Physics Department has some funds available for summer research on campus. The deadline for applying is Sunday, March 24, 2024. David Morin will send out a link to the application in mid March. The basic strategy for finding a professor and forming a proposal is to look around for a few professors whose work interests you, and to then start knocking on doors and sending out emails. Informal, but effective. See this list of the Physics faculty , and also this list organized by Research area . These funds are limited, which means that the larger the number of students who stay on campus, the smaller the funding amount will be. You are therefore encouraged to apply to REU programs. If you don't have a specific reason to stay at Harvard over the summer, it would be a shame to ignore the mindboggling number of REUs out there. If you decide to decline them in favor of a lab here at Harvard, that's fine. But for one summer, you may want to take advantage of the opportunity to explore things and visit another university. Travel around the world, see interesting places and people, and do physics. One caveat: If you are planning on going to physics grad school, you should definitely spend at least one summer here at Harvard (perhaps two), bookended with one or two 90r's before and/or after, to have an extended period of time for your research. If you do reseach here at Harvard with Physics Dept funding, your overall funding will likely come from a combination of sources: Physics Dept, HCRP, and internal lab funds.  
  • Harvard has various other souces of funding.  There are many programs listed on the Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (URAF) page . In particular: 1) The Harvard College Research Program is an important source of funding. Their deadline is also Sunday, March 24, 2024. To be eligible for Physics funding, you  must apply to HCRP. 2) The  PRISE Program offers housing along with social and educational events. You are strongly encouraged to apply. The deadline is early: Tuesday, February 13, 2024. 3) You should also consider applying for the Herchel Smith Fellowship . The deadline is very early: Sunday, February 4, 2024. This is a fantastic fellowship. If you get it, it basically takes care of all your summer-money worries. 4) If you are interested in going abroad, you should consider the Weissman  Fellowship.  5) Other Harvard sources of funding can be found on the Office of Career Services page and on the above URAF page.  
  • Internal lab funds:   You can avoid all the above funding issues by going directly to a professor who happens to have some grant money available for undergraduate summer research. Some do, some don't. This strategy definitely requires some running around. But note well -- it would be very unwise to use only this strategy unless you have an early guarantee that it's going to work.

MIT's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)  allows undergraduate students to collaborate on and contribute to real research across MIT. It is a hands-on way for students to pursue their passions, find new interests, or explore different majors.

When students participate in UROP, they hone important technical competencies that are essential to conducting effective research, as well as build skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication. Over the course of the experience, they develop relationships with faculty, graduate students, and other mentors who can make introductions that strengthen and broaden their professional network. These skills and connections provide students with an important advantage when launching a career or continuing their education.  

Projects can happen both on-campus and in the community, for pay or credit; they can last for a summer, a semester, or longer. UROPs are available in every MIT department, as well as centers and labs throughout the Institute.

The program is designed to provide a rigorous, in-depth research experience to prepare participants for top-quality Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. graduate programs.

The internships are designed for students interested in injury prevention research or practice experiences. They offer important opportunities to gain mentored research and practice-based experience in a CDC-funded multidisciplinary injury prevention center. The Center for Neurotechnology (CNT) at the University of Washington sponsors a 10-week Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) on the Seattle campus. This program provides undergraduate students with opportunities to work on research projects with scientists and to take part in workshop training sessions in ethics, communications, and scientific presentation skills designed to provide the undergraduate scientist with a solid foundation for graduate study. Student projects will focus on cutting edge research at the neurobiology/engineering interface.

Science & Technology, Social Sciences & Behavior Summer Anticipated 1/15/25

In this IRES site project, student participants will collect geologic data via state-of-the-art GNSS stations, and magnetometers. Students will use this data coupled with InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) methods to assess ground deformation with the goal of identifying a new tectonic boundary and velocity a vector for a tectonic block that we have named the Guanacaste Tectonic Sliver (GTS). This will allow for a better assessment of regional seismic hazards in this region of the country. Student-authored poster publications that will be presented at scientific conferences are the expected research outcome for participating students.

USC Undergraduate Research Associates Program

USC is one of only 146 Research I (RU/VH) universities among the 4,000 institutions of higher education in the United States. Undergraduate education at a research university offers special opportunities to students that are not available in other academic institutions. The ability to integrate research activities with professional and liberal education provides USC with a distinctive model of undergraduate education that sets us apart from other institutions.

The basic idea of learning as inquiry is the same as the idea of research. Even though advanced research generally occurs at the graduate level, undergraduates can also learn by performing research. In the sciences and social sciences, undergraduates can become junior members of the research teams that now engage professors and graduate students. In the humanities, undergraduates should have the opportunity to work with primary materials, perhaps linked to their professor’s research projects. As undergraduates advance through a program, their learning experiences should become closer and closer to the activity of the graduate student. By the senior year, the able undergraduate should be ready for research of the same character and roughly the same complexity as the first-year graduate student. The research university needs to make that zone of transition from senior to graduate student easy to enter and easy to cross. For those students who do not continue on to graduate school, the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems will prove invaluable in professional life and in citizenship. (Boyer Commission Report, 1998)

Providing support for collaborative research between undergraduate students and faculty members is best accomplished through approaches that blur the distinction between research and teaching. Such approaches should maximize faculty participation and enhance the learning experience of students.

The Undergraduate Research Associates Program is administered by the USC Office of Academic Programs. The goal of this program is to provide resources that enable faculty to integrate undergraduates into their scholarly and professional activities.

Faculty engaged in research with undergraduate students are invited to submit proposals to the Office of Undergraduate Education for additional funding by Thursday, February 22, 2024. The funding period covered by this Call for Proposals is July 2024 through June 2025. Student stipends will be disbursed by the Office of Academic Programs, and all stipend requests must be submitted by the end of the Spring 2025 semester. Students are encouraged to apply for multiple sources of funding (e.g. URAP, SOAR, SURF) but can only receive funding from one source in a given term.

Application and Guidelines 

Application process and deadline.

Proposals should be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Education no later than Thursday, February 22, 2024. The funding period covered by this Call for Proposals is July 2024 through June 2025 (funding requests due by the end of the Spring semester). Students are encouraged to apply for multiple sources of funding (e.g. URAP, SOAR, SURF) but can only receive funding from one source in a given term.

Complete proposals will include:

  • Faculty Proposal Application. (link to https://provost.sma.usc.edu/prog/urap )
  • Description of the research projects or collaborations in which the individual undergraduate students will participate.
  • Clear definition of the role of the undergraduate researcher(s), including the number of hours per week that students are expected to spend in the research. (For a semester stipend of $1,500, eight to ten hours per week for at least 10 weeks is typical. For a summer stipend of $3,000, twenty hours or more per week for at least eight weeks is typical.)
  • The process and criteria for selecting student researchers, which will assure that students who participate in these projects have demonstrated academic excellence, are well suited to the project structure and content, and will benefit academically from the experience.
  • Details regarding oversight and supervision by the proposing faculty.
  • Discussion of the integrative and/or group activities in which the undergraduate researchers will engage.
  • Nature of the final research report that will be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Education by each participating student(s).
  • Budget. (See the criteria noted in Guidelines)

Proposals are solicited from USC faculty in all disciplines to support undergraduate students as members of faculty research teams. Proposals may be submitted by individual faculty members or by groups. Limited funding may also be available as matching funds for departmental undergraduate research initiatives.

Projects may be proposed for individual students or for student teams. Within specific proposals, members of a faculty group may choose to work individually with students and share responsibility for the group components of the project (see below). Special consideration will be given to proposals that supplement existing external grants in order to support undergraduate researchers.

Funding is not provided for students registered in directed research courses, for graduate research assistants, or for projects in which undergraduate researchers will be supervised exclusively by graduate students.

  • Students will be paid in the form of research stipends, which are regarded as merit-based financial aid. The standard stipend for an academic semester is $1,500, assuming an average of eight to ten hours of student research per week. The standard summer stipend is $3,000, assuming an average of at least twenty hours of student research per week for at least eight weeks. Awards per proposal are limited to a maximum of $6,000 (limited to $3000 per student per academic year). Please note that students hired as undergraduate researchers in this program cannot simultaneously receive additional funding from the USC Provost’s Research Fellowship, Student Opportunities for Academic Research program (SOAR), or Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF).
  • The period covered by the current Call for Proposals is July 2024 through June 2025. Student stipends will be disbursed by the Office of Academic Programs, and all stipends must be paid by the end of the Spring 2025 semester. Faculty members who hire students for summer research (May and June 2025) must submit student information by the end of the Spring semester.
  • In addition to students’ individual involvement in research activities, projects should generally include some regular integrative or group activity. Examples of such activities are research seminars, colloquia, and participation in regional or national conferences. As part of their research experience, students are expected to receive training in ethical issues (e.g., human subjects training where appropriate) and in relevant forms of information retrieval and scholarly communication.
  • Each undergraduate research project should culminate with an appropriate report of the completed work (for example, a formal research paper, poster presentation, or similar demonstration of scholarly or creative accomplishments). All examples of student work should be submitted to the Office of Academic Programs before the end of the Spring 2025 semester. Failure to submit a research report will result in ineligibility for future funding.
  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 units in the upcoming Fall or Spring semesters.
  • Undergraduate students whose degrees have been posted are ineligible to receive URAP funds.
  • Progressive Degree students are ineligible to receive URAP funds.
  • All full-time students who receive financial aid must consult with their financial aid counselor before they agree in receiving a URAP payment. In addition, they must update their current address (with their apartment number) on MyUSC/OASIS at the beginning of the semester or the month prior working on a URAP project.

Funding Criteria

A faculty panel will review proposals and funding decisions will be made on the basis of the following criteria:

  • The quality of the proposed research project.
  • The level of educational benefit to the undergraduate research assistants.
  • Proposing faculty’s previous experience working with undergraduates, particularly in a research and/or collaborative environment.
  • The extent to which the project involves collaboration among faculty, particularly across academic units and/or disciplines.

Proposals that are project-based extensions of existing courses are not likely to be funded.

At least 90% of the project budget must be devoted to student research stipends.

At most 10% of the budget may be for materials and supplies.

The Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research supports students pursuing undergraduate research through one-on-one advising, workshops, and scholarships. You can start your research journey in many ways and as soon as your first day on campus. Meet with faculty and staff in your discipline and ask about their research or research opportunities in your school or college. Don’t be intimidated. Ask all the questions. Faculty and staff were once where you were and where they are now started with an idea, a question, a meeting, a mentor.

Through the generous support of the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Office of the Provost, the GW Undergraduate Research Award gives promising undergraduates the opportunity to engage in a well-defined research project under the guidance of a faculty member in their chosen fields of study.
