In broad terms, an entertaining speech is a speech designed to captivate an audience’s attention and regale or amuse them while delivering a message. Like more traditional informative or persuasive speeches, entertaining speeches should communicate a clear message, but the manner of speaking used in an entertaining speech is typically different. Entertaining speeches are often delivered on special occasions (e.g., a toast at a wedding, an acceptance speech at an awards banquet, a motivational speech at a conference), which is why they are sometimes referred to as special-occasion speeches. However, they can also be given on more mundane occasions, where their purpose is primarily to amuse audience members or arouse them emotionally in some way. Remember, when we use the word “entertain,” we are referring not just to humor but also to drama. The goal of an entertaining speech is to stir an audience’s emotions.

Of all the types of speeches we come in contact with during our lives, the bulk of them will probably fall into the category of entertainment. If you spend just one evening watching a major awards show (e.g., the Grammys, the Tonys, the Oscars), you’ll see dozens of acceptance speeches. While some of these acceptance speeches are good and others may be terrible, they all belong in the category of speaking to entertain.

Other speeches that fall into the entertaining category are designed to inspire or motivate an audience to do something. These are, however, different from a traditional persuasive speech. While entertaining speeches are often persuasive, we differentiate the two often based on the rhetorical situation itself. Maybe your school has hired a speaker to talk about his or her life story in an attempt to inspire the audience to try harder in school and reach for the best that life has to offer. You can imagine how this speech would be different from a traditional persuasive speech focusing on, say, the statistics related to scholastic achievement and success later in life.

Entertaining speeches are definitely very common, but that doesn’t mean they don’t require effort and preparation. A frequent trap is that people often think of entertaining speeches as corny. As a result, they don’t prepare seriously but rather stand up to speak with the idea that they can “wing it” by acting silly and telling a few jokes. Instead of being entertaining, the speech falls flat. To help us think through how to be effective in delivering entertaining speeches, let’s look at four key ingredients: preparation, adaptation to the occasion, adaptation to the audience, and mindfulness about the time.

Be Prepared

First, and foremost, the biggest mistake you can make when standing to deliver an entertaining speech is to underprepare or simply not prepare at all. We’ve stressed the need for preparation throughout this text, so just because you’re giving a wedding toast or a eulogy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t think through the speech before you stand up and speak out. If the situation is impromptu, even jotting some basic notes on a napkin is better than not having any plan for what you are going to say. Remember, when you get anxious, as it inevitably happens in front of an audience, your brain doesn’t function as well as when you are having a relaxed conversation with friends. You often forget information. By writing down some simple notes, you’ll be less likely to deliver a bad speech.

Be Adaptive to the Occasion

Not all content is appropriate for all occasions. If you are asked to deliver a speech commemorating the first anniversary of a school shooting, then obviously using humor and telling jokes wouldn’t be appropriate. But some decisions about adapting to the occasion are less obvious. Consider the following examples:

You are the maid of honor giving a toast at the wedding of your younger sister.
You are receiving a Most Valuable Player award in your favorite sport.
You are a sales representative speaking to a group of clients after a mistake has been discovered.
You are a cancer survivor speaking at a high school student assembly.

How might you adapt your message and speaking style to successfully entertain these various audiences?

Remember that being a competent speaker is about being both personally effective and socially appropriate. Different occasions will call for different levels of social appropriateness. One of the biggest mistakes entertaining speakers can make is to deliver one generic speech to different groups without adapting the speech to the specific occasion. In fact, professional speakers always make sure that their speeches are tailored for different occasions by getting information about the occasion from their hosts. When we tailor speeches for special occasions, people are more likely to remember those speeches than if we give a generic speech.

Be Adaptive to Your Audience

Once again, we cannot stress the importance of audience adaptation enough in this text. Different audiences will respond differently to speech material, so the more you know about your audience the more likely you’ll succeed in your speech. One of our coauthors was once at a conference for teachers of public speaking. The keynote speaker stood and delivered a speech on the importance of public speaking. While the speaker was good and funny, the speech really fell flat. The keynote speaker basically told the public speaking teachers that they should take public speaking courses because public speaking is important. Right speech, wrong audience!

Be Mindful of the Time

The last major consideration for delivering entertaining speeches successfully is to be mindful of your time. Different entertaining speech situations have their own conventions and rules with regard to time. Acceptance speeches and toasts, for example, should be relatively short (typically under five minutes). A speech of introduction should be extremely brief—just long enough to tell the audience what they need to know about the person being introduced in a style that prepares them to appreciate that person’s remarks. In contrast, commencement speeches and speeches to commemorate events can run ten to twenty minutes in length.

It’s also important to recognize that audiences on different occasions will expect speeches of various lengths. For example, although it’s true that graduation commencement speakers generally speak for ten to twenty minutes, the closer that speaker heads toward twenty minutes the more fidgety the audience becomes. To hold the audience’s attention and fulfill the goal of entertaining, a commencement speaker would do well to make the closing minutes of the speech the most engaging and inspiring portion of the speech. If you’re not sure about the expected time frame for a speech, either ask the person who has invited you to speak or do some quick research to see what the average speech times in the given context tend to be.

Types of Speeches: The Entertaining Speech

In the context of this series, an entertaining speech is one whose sole purpose is to have the audience enjoy the presentation. The purpose of an entertaining speech is not to educate, inform or inspire … it is to make the audience smile, relax, enjoy and maybe even laugh their heads off. (Figuratively, of course … real heads falling off would cause a nasty mess!)

If you decide to become a professional speaker or use speaking as an integral part of your marketing strategy, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the various types of speeches you might be asked to give. In this series of posts, I’ll give you the basics of a variety of types of presentations you can prepare. At the end of this post, I’ve listed previous articles in this series.

Let’s be honest here, entertainment truly is in the eye of the beholder. What one person finds entertaining, another may find duller than dishwater. So, you really have to know your audience in order to entertain them.

But what does that mean?

Although many — if not most — entertaining speeches are funny, they do not need to include humor to be entertaining. Dramas are entertaining but not funny, right? Here are some tips for creating an entertaining speech:

How to write an entertaining speech

There are many ways to entertain an audience. You can:

tell funny stories
dramatize an anecdote
tell a scary story

When it comes right down to it … there are probably as many ways to entertain as there are entertainers … and audiences.

That said, there are some guidelines for creating an entertaining speech.

Chose an appropriate topic: You don’t want the topic to be too dense, complicated or heavy. Remember, you’re not trying to give your audience a greater understanding of anything. You’re there to help them have a good time.
Enjoy yourself: Believe it or not, it is hard for an audience to enjoy your presentation if it looks like you are not enjoying presenting it!
Keep it simple: Your presentation should be easy to follow. Don’t make it hard for your audience to keep up with you mentally … or in any other way.
Make it visceral: Use vivid word pictures. This is not the type of presentation where you can be lazy in your descriptions. Make your words pop with strong images that pop in their minds.
Say it like a roller coaster, baby! Add unexpected twists and turns to your presentation. When you surprise your audience with where your story is going, that adds to the entertainment factor.

Limiting a list of funny monologues from movies was a challenge– while most of these are from comedy movies, others are from funny parts of more serious movies. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

The key to faking out the parents is the clammy hands. It's a good non-specific symptom. A lot of people will tell you that a phony fever is a dead lock, but if you get a nervous mother, you could land in the doctor's office. That's worse than school. What you do is: you fake a stomach cramp, and when you're bent over, moaning and wailing, you lick your palms. It's a little childish and stupid, but then, so is high school.

I did have a test today. That wasn't bulls**t. It's on European Socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European, I don't plan on being European, so who gives a crap if they're socialist? They could be fascist anarchists - that still wouldn't change the fact that I don't own a car. Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism, for that matter. Isms, in my opinion, are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism - he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon: "I don't believe in Beatles - I just believe in me." A good point there. Of course, he was the Walrus. I could be the Walrus - I'd still have to bum rides off of people.

Matthew Broderick delivers a series of really clever, genuinely funny speeches straight into the camera in 1986's Ferris Bueller's Day Off . Hard to pick a favorite, but this might be it!

So, OK, like right now, for example, the Haitians need to come to America. But some people are all "What about the strain on our resources?" But it's like, when I had this garden party for my father's birthday right? I said R.S.V.P. because it was a sit-down dinner. But people came that like, did not R.S.V.P. so I was like, totally buggin'. I had to haul ass to the kitchen, redistribute the food, squish in extra place settings, but by the end of the day it was like, the more the merrier! And so, if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians. And in conclusion, may I please remind you that it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty?

Cher's speech to the class expressing her unique views on Haitian immigrants in 1995's Clueless is definitely interesting. Clueless is a great comedy - and, in my opinion, pretty underrated.

My name is Happy Gilmore. Ever since I was old enough to skate, I loved hockey... wasn't the greatest skater though. But that didn't stop my dad from teaching me the secret of slapping the greatest slapshot. My dad worshiped hockey, my mom didn't, that's why she moved to Egypt, where there's not a hockey rink within 15 hundred miles. Dad always took me to games to cheer for our favorite player, Terry O'Riley, the Tazmanian Devil. He wasn't the biggest guy in the league, but he feared nobody, just like me. Handsome fellow huh? He always said that when I grew up I could be anything I wanted to be, but I never wanted to be anything but a hockey player. Yeah my childhood was going great, but life is full of surprises. After the funeral, I was sent to live with my grandma in Waterberry. I was kinda nervous since I really didn't know her that well, but she dressed like Gene Simmons from KISS to cheer me up, she's the sweetest person in the world. See after my dad died I developed kinda a short fuse. You see that kid over there just stole my party blower, and instead of asking for it back, I felt that I had to belt him in the head a bunch of times with a hammer. Look at me go. But I was always quick to say I was sorry. During high school I played junior hockey and still hold two league records; most time spent in the penalty box, and I was the only guy to ever take off his skate and try to stab someone. After I graduated I had a lot of different jobs; I was a road worker, a janitor, a security guard, a gas station attendant, and a plumber. Lately I've been working construction, it's not a bad racket, I'm a pretty good shot with a nail gun, but one day my boss, Mr. Larson, uh got in the way. Apparently he also has a short fuse. Look at that monster. He got a few lucky punches in there, but I still feel I won the fight. Anyways, those other jobs weren't for me. I was put on this planet for one reason, to play hockey.

Adam Sandler's 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore is a hilarious movie, and Happy's explanation here about why he was put on the Earth to play hockey is a classic example.

Clark Griswold is barely hanging on, and in this hilarious bit from 1983's Vacation , Chevy Chase delivers without question one of the funniest rants from any comedy movie ever.

National Lampoon's Animal House

Over? Did you say 'over?!' Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go! Come on! (runs out, nobody follows, runs back in) What the f**k happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? 'Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble.' Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer...

Otter interrupts Bluto's motivational speech at this point, throwing his support behind his frat brother, even though he's "psychotic."

In this classic funny speech from 1978's Animal House , Bluto (John Belushi) has just learned that Dean Wormer has kicked them all out of school. His speech rallying tries his fraternity brothers together is one for the ages.

How CNN, Fox News react to Joe Biden's emotional DNC speech: 'The old lion's last roar'

President Joe Biden said an emotional, forceful goodbye, for all intents and purposes, to more than a half-century in politics Monday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

It took a while to get there.

As cable-network news pundits put it — repeatedly — the night ran so long that Biden's speech, which was the focus of coverage all day, got pushed out of prime time on the East Coast, starting well after 11 p.m. there (after 8 p.m. Arizona time). Whether that really matters in an age where people consume news differently than they used to — one person on social media said what about prime time, I'm watching this on my phone — it was at least symbolically awkward. (Some speakers were cut from the night, as was James Taylor's performance.)

Or, as Jake Tapper put it on CNN, "There are going to be a lot of people who think Joe Biden kind of got the fuzzy end of the lollipop tonight."

Why did Joe Biden go on so late?

Fox News was quick to suggest that it was intentional (and they weren't the only ones). Asked if it would work to put Biden on so late, Karl Rove said, “It’s going to work if you don’t want to make the face of the convention Joe Biden. … It’s an indication they want to put him in the rearview mirror as quickly as they possibly can.”

Long lines to get into the United Center were the supposed real culprit. Either way, the night was billed as a passing of the torch, from Biden to Vice President Kamala Harris. And it was. Sort of. Biden's 48-minute speech, playing up his administration's accomplishments and attacking Republican nominee Donald Trump, sounded a lot like one he could have delivered Thursday night if he were accepting his party's nomination.

Which was, after all, how this was all supposed to go down only a month ago. One terrible debate performance later and Biden was out, Harris and Tim Walz were in and a once-moribund Democratic party is clearly more energized, something that was evident Monday night. Harris made a kinda-sorta surprise appearance and got rock-star applause. Fiery speeches from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Jasmine Crockett and Sen. Raphael Warnock indeed pointed toward a new, more aggressive stance toward Trump.

Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, who lost to Trump in 2016, was a nod toward the past. Her speech was poignant, with a callback to her signature line about breaking the "highest, hardest glass ceiling." Now it would be Harris' turn to try.

Ashley Biden's speech brought tears

But all day, on all the networks, all of the coverage was building toward Biden’s speech. On CNN and MSNBC he made a difficult choice he didn’t want to make for the good of his party. On Fox News he was the victim of a “coup,” the word of the week on the network. It’s like a right-wing “Sesame Street” over there.

Biden's daughter Ashley introduced him, talking about her father in personal terms, calling him "the OG girl dad." In one of the most moving moments of the night, when he finally came out, they embraced and spoke briefly; he pulled a handkerchief from his pocked and dabbed at his eyes.

"That was my daughter!" Biden yelled with obvious pride after a four-and-a-half minute standing ovation. It was a nice moment.

It also signaled the energy to come. "He was in his State of the Union cadence, sort of a yelling tone," Bret Baier said on Fox News, referring to Biden's amped-up address in March . Indeed, Biden did raise his voice a lot, especially when talking about Trump. ("Who the hell does he think he is?") When he did talk about the future, it often sounded like he stuck "Kamala and Tim" where "I" was in the original speech.

'America, I gave my best to you'

He got some good lines in. "We saved Democracy in 2020, and now we must save it again in 2024."

He was once told he was too young to serve in the U.S. Senate, and then told he was too old to stay on as president. "All this talk about how I'm angry at all those people (who) said I should step down — that's not true." Of course, the big one: "I love the job, but I love my country more." Nothing got more applause than when he quoted "American Anthem," saying, "America, I gave my best to you."

"The old lion's last roar," Van Jones said on CNN. "A long roar," Dana Bash replied.

Give him his due. Given the chaos of the last few weeks, it all seemed fitting. And remember, there are three nights to go.

DNC Night 1 Highlights: Joe Biden Urges ‘Beat Donald Trump’ in Nearly 50-Minute Speech; Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Fires Up Crowd

Joe Biden took the stage as the final speaker at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday night, with more than three minutes of applause and frequent chants of “We love Joe” from the audience. The 49-minute speech ran long during a night that was already behind schedule.

During the speech, audience members unfurled a banner reading “Stop arming Israel,” several attendees reported, and other people tried to rip the banner away. The disruption didn’t cause much of a ripple due to the vast size of the arena.

Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton, who fell short of becoming the first woman president, told Democrats she believes America is on the verge of breaking through and electing Kamala Harris .

In her speech at the Democratic convention in Chicago, Clinton drew on the legacy of women on the national stage, from Shirley Chisholm to Geraldine Ferraro, and said that Harris will make history.

“I want my children and grandchildren to know I was here at this moment,” she said. “We were here. We were with Kamala Harris every step of the way. This is when we break through. The future is here. Let’s go win it.”

Kamala Harris

“This is going to be a great week!” Harris said during her brief appearance Monday. She gave a heartfelt thank-you to Biden. “We are forever grateful to you.”

Harris’ appearance followed a brief biographical video, narrated by Jeffrey Wright and accompanied by Beyonce’s song “Freedom.”

Tony Goldwyn

The vice president then gave way to emcee Tony Goldwyn, the actor who played the president on the ABC show “Scandal.” Goldwyn was among a handful of entertainers on stage, following Jason Isbell, who sang “Something More Than Free,” and Mickey Guyton, who performed “Ain’t We All American?”

Goldwyn promised that the week would offer an introduction to Harris and a clear contrast between Donald Trump’s agenda and her vision for the future.

“It is a message that’s joyful, not mean spirited,” Goldwyn said. “Public service — not self service, optimism and opportunity, not chaos and division. It’s a message that has woken us up to who we are.”

The Democratic speakers offered tributes to Biden and Harris, but also sought to prosecute the case against Trump. Many attendees were overheard buzzing in corridors about the most recent Trump outrage — falsely claiming to have been endorsed by Taylor Swift.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Democrat who has become one of the youthful faces of the party, was one of most anticipated speakers on the schedule and she was effective in firing up the crowd. Earlier in the day, Donald Trump’s campaign sought to link Harris to Ocasio-Cortez’s positions on issues like defunding the police and the Green New Deal.

When it was her turn at the podium, Ocasio-Cortez didn’t waste time attacking Trump as a plutocrat. AOC demonstrated her muscle as one of the most prominent young Democratic stars to come along in years. Her speech was drowned out in multiple instances by screaming and applause — especially when she took aim at Trump.

“I for one am tired of hearing about how a two-bit union buster thinks of himself as more of a patriot than the woman who fights every single day to lift working people out from under the boots of greed trampling on our way of life,” she said. “The truth is, Don, you cannot love this country if you only fight for the wealthy and big business. To love this country is to fight for all people, working people, everyday Americans.” Ocasio-Cortez also reminded the crowd how important support for House and Senate races are. “We can’t send Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to Washington alone,” she said.

Hitting Back at Trump

Clinton also didn’t hold back against Trump, saying he “fell asleep at his own trial,” and woke up to find himself convicted on 34 felony counts. In a twist of history, the crowd chanted “Lock him up!” — an echo of chants at Trump rallies eight years ago calling for Clinton to be jailed.

Clinton also drew parallels between Trump’s attacks on her and those on Harris.

The convention scene

Spotted in the basement of the United Center were Marisa Tomei, J.J. Abrams and producer Bruce Cohen. They said they had “high hopes” for the campaign. Abrams and his wife, Katie McGrath, have given more than $3 million to Democratic committees this cycle. Cohen is also a prolific donor.

With the convention speeches running late, James Taylor was cut from his scheduled performance before Biden’s speech.

As Democrats got ready for opening night, downtown Chicago was humming Monday with flags, bunting, bootleg t-shirt vendors and all the usual trappings of a political circus come to town.

Delegates from all over the country took time out before the major speechifying at the United Center this evening to look around the city. A rally in support of Palestinians in Gaza drew about 15,000 people, organizers with the Coalition to March on the DNC told ABC News Chicago .

But generally speaking, the downtown scene seemed calm. Further south near the warren of hotels housing delegates, the scene was quiet even outside of the gleaming silver Trump Tower that looks out over the city’s Riverwalk.

Another hub of activity was on the east side of town at the sprawling McCormick Place center that the hosted DemPalooza showcase featuring a range of left-leaning organizations and causes. There were stages for discussions and Q&As but they were sparsely attended. The five-mile distance between McCormick Place and the United Center has obvious advantages for security and crowd control. But it also makes attendees heavily dependent on the DNC shuttles operating among the hotels and the two venues. The security perimeter around United Center is so large that ride share drivers and even public transit can’t get too close.

Elections are often defined in slogans and there was plenty of sloganeering displayed on the lapels, polo shirts and blouses of delegates, from “Remember Jan. 6” to “Keep Kamala and Carry On,” “Another Cat Lady for Kamala” and “Make Lying Wrong Again.”

ElevenLabs’ text-to-speech app Reader is now available globally

ElevenLabs , a startup developing AI-powered tools to create and edit synthetic voices, is making its Reader app available across the world with support for 32 languages.

The app, first released in June in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada, lets users upload any text content — like articles, PDF documents or e-books — and listen to it in different languages and voices. Reader now supports languages including Portuguese, Spanish, French, Hindi, German, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Italian, Tamil and Swedish.

ElevenLabs, which became a unicorn earlier this year after raising $80 million from investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, provides an API that companies can use for various use cases like dubbing or text-to-speech. The company powers voice interactions on the Rabbit r1 , as well as text-to-speech features on AI-powered search engine Perplexity and audio platforms Pocket FM and Kuku FM . The Reader app is its first consumer-facing product.

The startup said it has added hundreds of new voices from its library that are suited for different languages. Last month, the company licensed the voices of actors such as Judy Garland, James Dean, Burt Reynolds and Sir Laurence Olivier for the app.

ElevenLabs said the extended language support is powered by its Turbo v2.5 model, released last month , which purportedly reduces the latency of text-to-speech conversion and improves quality.

The Reader app’s closest rival is Speechify , which offers additional features like scanning documents for text, integrations with Gmail and Canvas, as well as letting users clone their own voice to read out text. Mozilla-owned Pocket and The New York Times’ Audm-based audio app also let users listen to content.

ElevenLabs said it would add more features to the app, such as offline support and the ability to share audio snippets.

Joe Biden’s DNC Speech 2024 Highlights

P resident Joe Biden received an emotional standing ovation when he took the stage at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night, roughly a month after he ended his reelection bid and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the party’s nominee.

Biden, 81, appeared to wipe away tears as he hugged his daughter, Ashley, who introduced him. The crowd cheered for more than four minutes, chanting “We love Joe” and “Thank you, Joe,” before he started his near hour-long speech. The moment marked a show of support for Biden’s political career, which has spanned more than 50 years, and his decision to pass the torch to Harris.

His speech at the DNC had been considered one of his final chances to make the case for his legacy after several members of his own party—many in the audience—reportedly pressured him to exit the race. Throughout his remarks, Biden recounted the accomplishments of his Administration, explained why he ran for President in 2020, and took direct aim at former President Donald Trump.

“As your President, I’ve been determined to keep America moving forward, not going back,” Biden said. “To stand against hate and violence and all its forms. To be a nation where we not only live with but thrive on diversity, demonizing no one, leaving no one behind, and becoming a nation that we profess to be.”

Here are some of the biggest moments from Biden’s speech at the DNC.

Biden officially passes the torch to Harris

Biden praised his vice president throughout his speech, telling Democrats that Harris will be a “President our children could look up to.” He made sure to credit her for their Administration’s accomplishments after chants of “Thank you, Joe” broke out. “Thank you, Kamala, too,” Biden said—a recognition that his legacy is now tied to hers.

“We’ve had one of the most extraordinary four years of progress ever. Period. When I say we, I mean Kamala and me,” he said.

“She’ll be a President respected by world leaders because she already is,” Biden added. “She’ll be a President we can all be proud of. And she will be an historic President who puts her stamp on America’s future.”

He told supporters that he will be the “best volunteer” for her campaign and urged voters to show up on Election Day. “Like many of our best Presidents, she was also vice president,” he said, a joking nod to his own background as a former vice president.

Biden also used part of his speech to spotlight some of the issues Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are championing, including their campaign’s recently-revealed economic policy agenda : “Kamala and Tim will continue to take on corporate greed and bring down cost of food,” he said, in reference to her plan to pass a first-ever federal ban on price gouging.

“They’ll make housing more affordable, building 3 million new homes, providing $25,000 down payment assistance for the first-time home buyer,” Biden added.

Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff joined Biden and First Lady Jill Biden on stage after he concluded his speech. Harris could be seen saying “I love you” while hugging the President.

Biden bids farewell and says he’s not angry at Democrats who called for his exit

A large portion of Biden’s speech was used to list his Administration’s achievements, such as bringing the nation back from the COVID-19 pandemic, making historic investments in infrastructure, creating millions of jobs, and lowering prescription drug prices. But he also devoted time to mark a wistful bookend to his national political career, which began in 1972, when he came into the spotlight as a youthful and energetic 29-year-old running for the Senate.

Biden boasts a lengthy political record: He was elected to the Senate at just 29, ran for the Democratic nomination for President twice before joining Barack Obama’s historic ticket as running mate in 2008—serving two terms as vice president during which he used his experience to help usher through deals with Congress—and was finally elected President in 2020 . “Nowhere else in the world could a kid with a stutter and modest beginnings in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Claymont, Delaware, grow up to sit behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office,” he said.

He touted his Administration’s legislative wins and said that Harris and Walz “understand that this nation must continue to be a place of possibilities. Not just for the few of us, but for all of us.” Biden also recounted his commitment to “rebuild the backbone of America, the middle class” and said that the bills he passed “delivered more to red states than blue.”

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you. For 50 years, like many of you, I’ve given my heart and soul to our nation. And I’ve been blessed a million times in return with the support of the American people,” Biden said. “I’ve either been too young to be in the Senate because I wasn’t 30 yet and too old to stay as President. But I hope you know how grateful I am to all of you.”

Biden also addressed the elephant in the room, telling the convention crowd that he harbors no ill will towards the Democrats who publicly and privately urged him to drop out of the 2024 race.

“And all this talk about how I’m angry with all those people who said I should step down—that’s not true,” Biden said, as the crowd chanted “We love Joe.”

“I love my country more, and we need to preserve our democracy,” he said.

Biden acknowledges anti-war protesters ‘have a point’

Biden used part of his speech to address the Israel-Hamas war, which has been a cause of division within the Democratic Party , saying that protesters calling for an end to the violence against Palestinians “have a point.”

“We’re working around the clock, my Secretary of State, to prevent a wider war and reunite hostages with their families and surge humanitarian health and food assistance into Gaza now,” Biden said, “to end the civilian suffering of the Palestinian people and finally, finally, finally deliver a ceasefire and end this war.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Monday that Israel has accepted a proposal to bridge differences in ceasefire and hostage release negotiations, and called for Hamas to accept the terms. Anti-war protests have taken place across the nation, including outside the convention in Chicago, as demonstrators hope to pressure the Biden Administration and Democratic Party to stop supporting Israel.

“Those protesters out in the street, they have a point. A lot of innocent people are being killed on both sides,” Biden added. Around 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, while more than 1,200 Israelis have been killed since Oct. 7 last year, according to estimates from the United Nations .

Biden takes aim at Trump and urges supporters to get out and vote

Biden made several references to Trump throughout his speech, calling the Republican nominee whom he beat in 2020 a “loser” who put “himself first and America last.” Biden took particular aim at Trump’s frequent assertion that the U.S. is a country in decline : “He says, we’re losing. He’s the loser. He’s dead wrong.”

“All of us carry a special obligation,” Biden said, addressing not just Democrats but Americans of all political stripes. “We saved democracy in 2020, and now we must save it again in 2024,” he added, urging people to vote for Harris in order to prevent a second term under Trump .

“We’re in a battle for the very soul of America,” Biden said, echoing his campaign refrain from 2020 . “America’s future’s in your hands.”
