The winners and runners-up (i.e. the top 3) in both categories will be published on the  Mason Institute website . Winning essays and runners-up at the undergraduate and postgraduate level will be invited to publish their essays on the Mason Institute blog.

For the essay competition, you are invited to submit an essay, either newly written or previously written and submitted to one of your courses within the past academic year, that falls within the broad scope of the MI’s work  on ethics and law at the interface between health, medicine and the life sciences at a national and global scale.  You can read more about the MI’s work  here .

To be eligible to participate in the MI Essay Competition, you must be either:

  • Currently enrolled as a postgraduate (e.g. Masters or PhD student) at a university

Essays must   be submitted through your institutional email account.

Please submit your essays via email to the Mason Institute administrator:  [email protected]

The essay should be accompanied with a cover note which clearly indicates:

  • your name as the essay competition entrant;
  • the degree for which you are studying;
  • your institution; and
  • that the submitted essay is being entered into the competition either as part of the undergraduate or postgraduate essay category.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate essays will be judged on the level of knowledge and understanding of the relevant material, the clarity and style of writing, critical analysis and quality of argumentation, relevance, persuasive force, and originality of approach. The potential to significantly expand, challenge, or critique existing approaches of the topic which might lead to rethinking of the issue shall be considered a merit. We anticipate that some students will use the experience of entering the essay competition as evidence of their super-curricular engagement and plan to profile it on their future university applications. With that in mind, this year we are running four essay competitions, aligned to our four university consultancy brands. Whilst all students are welcome to enter, we particularly encourage those who are considering university applications in the following fields to enter the competitions:

Describe and justify what the ideal schools, existing in the year 2100, would be like

Useful for those students who are planning an application to a US university; this title encourages entrants to consider what makes an institution special and how that might change in the future. The competition is a great warm-up for the supplemental essays students will write when applying.

Useful for those students who are considering a competitive UK university pathway, such as Oxford or Cambridge.

To what extent is there a legal justification for extreme climate change protest?

Learn about all of the competitions and prizes you can enter at school to boost your Medicine application.

If you’re an aspiring medic at school, you can boost your Medicine application by entering competitions and prizes. Regardless of whether you win or not, you’ll be able to include the experience in your Personal Statement and talk about it at Med School interviews . Here are some Medicine competitions you can enter to be proactive and make your application stand out.

Imperial College London has three team competitions to choose from:

  • The British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Prize – Submissions should focus on a topic with interactions between the cardiovascular system and the nervous system.
  • The Lung Prize – Submissions can focus on any aspect of the prevention or treatment of respiratory disease.
  • The Scleroderma and Raynaud’s UK Prize – Submissions should focus on promoting the health and wellbeing of individuals with Scleroderma and/or Raynaud’s.

For each competition, the challenge is to design an ePoster. A team can have up to six members (they recommend assembling a team with varied interests) and schools can enter one team per prize.

The top ten shortlisted teams in each contest will be invited to present their ePosters at an online finals event. In each stream, first, second and third prizes of £3,000, £2,000 and £1,000 will be awarded to schools in order to support science-related activities.

Deadline – midnight on 30th June 2023.

University of Cambridge – Robinson College Essay Prize

The Robinson College Essay Prize is open to Year 12 students in the UK, providing an opportunity to develop and showcase independent study and writing skills. It also allows students to experience the type of work that they might be expected to do at Cambridge.

Entrants submit an essay (no more than 2,000 words) answering a question from various options. Last year, one of the possible titles was ‘Can science tell us how we should live?’. Up to three entries can be submitted per school, so you should discuss your application with your school before entering.

Five prizes are awarded, with each winner receiving book tokens to the value of £50. Winners will also be invited to Robinson College for a prize-giving ceremony.

The 2023 prize will open with more info in June.

Gwyneth Bebb Law Essay Competition

Home → Study Here → Outreach → Essay Competitions → Gwyneth Bebb Law Essay Competition

The Principal and Fellows of St Hugh’s College are pleased to offer a prize of up to £500 for the best essay written in response the question:

Defend one of the following two propositions:

  • The deployment of juries as part of this country’s criminal trial procedure should be abolished.
  • There is no particular reason for our judiciary to be representative of this country’s population.

No detailed knowledge of English law is required to answer it; indeed, while cases reported in the national media may be referred to, entrants should not look to cite any specific case law or statutes in their work. Rather, they are encouraged to think about things a matter of principle. The judges will be looking out for an entrant’s ability to reason from wider precepts and to construct clear and coherent arguments.

Entry is restricted to pupils who, at the closing date, have been in the Sixth Form of any state-funded school or college for a period of not more than two years.

Entries should be 1500 – 2000 words in length, including any material in the footnotes which is additional commentary or content related to your essay. References or citations in footnotes, and your bibliography, are not included in this word count. You are welcome to use whichever style of referencing you prefer. Essays must be submitted in PDF format.

Instructions for submitting your entry can be found on the right-hand side of this page. The closing date for entries is 5pm on Friday 26th July 2024. Prize winners will be announced online by the end of September.

Please direct any enquiries to [email protected]
