If you’re like most people, when you hear the word wiki, you automatically think of Wikipedia . Almost anyone who uses the Internet has used Wikipedia from time to time to learn more about any of the millions of topics it covers in its four million pages. Indeed, it might seem harder not to use Wikipedia than to use it since its pages tend to come up first, or at least in the top five, of most Google searches, and most surveys of the world’s most popular websites put Wikipedia in the top ten. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine what the internet would be like today without wikis!
This article is about how you—and your fellow students—can use wikis to help write essays and conduct academic research. To make things easier, we’ve divided it into two sections. First, we’ll talk about how to use wikis to conduct research. Then we’ll talk briefly about using wikis to actually help you write your project.
Wikis as a Research Tool
As a student, though, you’ve probably been discouraged from using Wikipedia by well-meaning teachers. They might have forbidden you from citing or even looking at Wikipedia articles. Most of their objections are based on the myth that “just anybody” can put or change articles on a wiki. What if that article you’re citing about oil spills was authored by a BP employee? What if that article on ghost hunting was put up there by a “believer” who refused to consider any evidence that didn’t confirm her views on the paranormal?
While these suspicions are false— Wikipedia is often more accurate than commercial encyclopedias—these teachers are right about one thing: if you’re writing an academic paper, you need to cite academic sources, and Wikipedia —just like any other encyclopedia—is not an academic source. That’s not their fault; they were never intended to be used by students writing research papers. Instead, they’re designed for everyday people who just want a concise, simplified summary of a topic or issue. The author of an encyclopedia article might go to great lengths to make sure the facts presented there are accurate, but the information is still heavily filtered and diluted by the time it gets to print or screen. That’s because the author has to take in whatever has been written by professional researchers, then interpret it for people who have little to no understanding of the subject at hand.
Imagine trying to describe a new phone app to your tech-savvy friends versus a family member who has never owned a mobile phone. That’s the level of ignorance that every encyclopedia (or Wikipedia ) contributor has to deal with. Needless to say, a lot of information is going to be simplified or just left out entirely.
Academic sources, on the other hand, aren’t filtered or diluted at all. They don’t need to be, because the people who read them are experts in the subject matter. Because they are experts, they are better able to pick out where authors make mistakes. They can also tell (usually) when an author is intentionally being dishonest.
This line between academic and non-academic sources is where Wikipedia shines compared to its print-based cousins. Unlike them, Wikipedia pages are heavily referenced, meaning that the authors are routinely asked to provide credible documentation to back up their information. If you look closely at a page such as the “Deepwater Horizon oil spill” page, you’ll notice lots of numbers in brackets at the end of some sentences—nearly five hundred different sources! Click on one, and you’ll jump straight to the citation, which in most cases is a credible source such as an academic article, book, reputable website, government report, or newspaper item. Even though your teacher might not accept Wikipedia articles as a source, he or she is probably fine with a scientific report from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management or the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies. If these sources aren’t available online, you’ll need to go to your library’s homepage to figure out how to access them. You can do that by searching your library’s database, but if it gets confusing, just ask a reference librarian to help you.
Wikis like the Wikipedia can help you do research, but remember—they’re just there to give you a shallow understanding of a topic. When you’re ready to go deeper, click on the sources and find the actual academic research you need for your project.
Wikis as a Writing Tool
Using wikis to actually help you write a paper is very different than just using them for research. The big problem is other people. When you write an old-fashioned essay, you get to make all the decisions regarding what you say, how you say it, what order you put it in, and how many times you proofread it before handing it in. A wiki, on the other hand, turns all of these decisions into discussions. If you anger the other people working on the wiki, they might simply roll back your changes or even banish you! In any event, a poorly functioning group with lots of anger and resentment is very unlikely to produce a good wiki, assuming they produce anything at all.
Instead of viewing wikis as a writing tool, then, you should view them as a writing community. Understand that the other people involved are probably just as proud and convinced of the rightness of their choices as you are. Wiki writers have to be willing to see their own work routinely modified or even deleted by other people. That’s a big blow to a lot of students’ egos, especially those with good grades in their writing courses and who are proud of their ability. There’s always the temptation to get angry or depressed about it, lose your focus, and end up with a bad grade.
If you’re starting a new wiki project, then, the most important thing you can do is make sure that everyone onboard is clear about the goals you’ve set and the method for getting there. Plan ahead for disagreements and treat everyone with respect, especially when you feel they don’t deserve it. For your part, if you’ve argued your case and the majority still disagrees with you, don’t be stubborn or resentful. Just quietly accept it and move on, and don’t let it stop you from trying to make the rest of the project as good as it can be. If you show that you can handle disagreement in a professional and mature fashion, you’ll gain a level of trust and respect that’s a lot more valuable in the long run than the short-lived satisfaction you get from lashing out.
On a positive note, wikis are very simple to use, and the software is often free. Wikispaces , Wikidot , and Wetpaint are great choices for anyone new to wikis. Check out their various features and see which one will work best for your project. It’s also a good idea to look for existing wikis that are similar to what you have in mind; you’ll learn a lot by example. Even if you can’t find a wiki on your particular subject, such as the prevention of oil spills, you might find one on the prevention of forest fires. Whatever worked (and didn’t work) for the forest fire page will likely apply to yours as well, so study it carefully.
There’s a lot to know about wikis, and a good place to learn more is Wikipedia itself. Next time you’re doing research, take some time to notice the numbers in brackets and examine the sources the contributors have used to support their points. If you’re creating or contributing to a wiki project, don’t treat it like a traditional essay. Now, you’re working with other people. Be clear about the goals of the project, any rules and guidelines, and always be willing to compromise.

When taking English courses in high school and college, you'll likely be assigned to write essays. While writing an essay for an English class may seem overwhelming, it does not have to be. If you give yourself plenty of time to plan out and develop your essay, however, then you will not have to stress about it.

Getting Started
- Your instructor will expect to see a well-crafted thesis early on in your essay. Place your thesis at the end of your first paragraph.
- If you don't understand how to write a thesis, ask your instructor for help. This is an important concept that will keep coming up in courses where you have to write papers.
- Telling a personal anecdote
- Citing a surprising fact or statistic
- Overturning a common misconception
- Challenging the reader to examine her own preconceptions
- You can create a numbered outline using a word processor or just put it on paper.
- Don’t worry about being too detailed when you create your outline. Just try to get the major ideas on paper.
- A really solid outline helps you figure out how you're going to put all the pieces of the puzzle together.
Drafting the Essay
- Make sure that you have your outline handy as well. You can build on your outline by expanding on each of the points in the order that they are listed in.
- Think of the topic sentence as a way to tell readers what you'll talk about in the rest of the paragraph. You don’t need to summarize the whole paragraph—just provide readers with a taste.
- For example, in a paragraph that describes Okonkwo’s rise and fall in Things Fall Apart, you might begin with something like: “Okonkwo starts out as a poor young man, but then rises to a position of wealth and status.”
- Returning to the invention stage . This includes exercises such as freewriting, listing, or clustering. You can also revisit your notes and books to see if there's anything you missed or forgot.
- Visiting your school’s writing lab . You can find a writing lab on most college campuses. They are free to students and can help you improve your writing at any stage in the writing process.
- Talking to your instructor . Take advantage of your professor's office hours or one-on-one appointments. Meet with them and discuss ways that you can improve your essay before you hand it in.
- An MLA style works cited page starts on a new page at the end of the essay. Provide entries for each of the sources that you used. These entries should include the information necessary to allow the reader to find the source with ease. - MLA style in-text (also called parenthetical) citations provide readers with the author’s last name the page number for the information. It's necessary to include an in-text citation for any information that you quote, summarize, or paraphrase from a source. It comes right after the sourced information, and it includes the author’s last name and page number in parentheses. - Qualify or complicate the information in your essay
- Suggest a need for further research
- Speculate on how the future will change the current situation
Revising the Essay
- If possible, give yourself at least 5 days to work on your essay. Dedicate separate days to researching, crafting your thesis, outlining your ideas, drafting your paper, and making revisions.
- Have I answered the question in a satisfactory way?
- Do I have a clear thesis? Is my thesis the focus of my essay?
- Do I include adequate support for my argument? Is there anything else I could add?
- Is there a logic to my essay? Does one idea follow the next? If not, how might I improve the logic of my essay?
- Try swapping essays with a friend from class. You can read and comment on each other’s essays to make sure that both of you have done the best work possible.
- Make sure that you swap papers at least one day before the paper is due so that you will have time to correct any errors that your friend finds.
- As you read, correct any errors that you find and make a note of anything that you think could be improved, such as adding more details or clarifying the language.
Planning Your Essay
- Always ask your professor if you don't understand the assignment. It's important to have a clear idea of what they want before you start working on the assignment.

- A clear and direct piece of writing that is easy to follow
- A polished paper with no minor errors, such as typos or misspellings
- For example, if you are tasked with writing about a character in a book, then you will need to provide lots of details about that character. This will probably require rereading some passages of your book as well as revisiting your notes from class. [16] X Research source
- To ensure that your paper is easy to follow, you'll need to make sure that there's a logical order to your essay. Do this by creating an outline and checking your work for logic.
- Start early and give yourself lots of time for revision. Try to complete your first draft about one week before the paper is due.
- Freewriting . Write as much as you can without stopping. If you can’t think of anything, write “I can’t think of anything to write,” until something comes to mind. After you finish, go over what've written and underline or highlight any useful information for your essay.
- Listing . Make a list of all of the details and information that are relevant to the essay prompt. After you have listed everything that you can think of, read over it and circle the most important information for your essay.
- Clustering . Write your topic in the middle of the page, then branch out with other connected ideas. Circle the ideas and connect them to the main one with lines. Keep going until you can't do any more.
- Good sources to use for English essays include books, articles from scholarly journals, articles from trustworthy news sources (NY Times, Wall Street Journal, etc.), and government or university sponsored web pages.
- Many instructors include “research quality” in their grading criteria, so including poor sources, such as blogs, may result in a poor grade.
- If you are not sure if a source is of good quality, ask your instructor or a librarian.

Essay is a universal type of writing, normally with the authors’ opinion.
“A short piece of writing on a particular subject, often expressing personal views” (Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus)
They can be used to persuade the reader, e.g. Personal Statement, to be selected into a college; Critical Essay, a review of a book, or film with the writer`s evaluation. Essay comprises other different genres: Argumentative, Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, Expository, among others.
An essay is generally structured in introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. A basic essay is composed by a minimum of three paragraphs. The introduction paragraph should contains the ‘hook’ to get the readers` attention and the thesis statement – one sentence that rather summarize the direction of the text. Secondly, each of your body paragraph may have a topic sentence, and different arguments to sustain it. These paragraphs partition can change in relation to the type of essay you are writing.
Furthermore, you will finish your essay with a conclusion paragraph, in which you should summarize your arguments and confirm or qualify your thesis. Pay attention: you must not give new information in the conclusion.
Why is writing an essay important
Essays are important because they allow your ideas and point of view to be known even in your absence. This characteristic may be verified through the uses of the distinct types of essays. A personal statement is usually used to apply for scholarships, universities and jobs. In general, a personal essay is used before personal contact between you and the institution of interest. Consequently, the essay represents you and should make you stand out from others by itself. Then, an argumentative essay is important to convince people of your point of view. As example, this essay is used for a research thesis or dissertation or to defend an ideology. This type of essay is one of the main forms which scientific advances can be spread among academicians. A compare and contrast essay may be use for advertisement, critics or a review. The characteristics of a product can be presented to their consumers without a salesman knocking door to door to sell it. As seen in these examples, the importance of writing essays can be resumed to communication in society – presenting yourself, developing science, selling products and so much more. Essays are powerful tools to spread our ideas and keep in touch with society.
Types of essays
There are different types of essay that will attend the writer's need. Here we have some examples of types of essay that are most used.
Personal Statement
The personal statement is a kind of text where you give the narrative about something very intimate of your life. One of your goals is to show to other people the intrinsic characteristics of your personality that set you apart from the most, and also describe activities that add value to your resume, such as a volunteer work. It is widely used in applications for students entering universities. In this case, the student describes their interest in entering a specific course and why that university would be their best choice.
Argumentative Essay
An argumentative essay is used to talk about a specific subject from your point of view and requires to conduct a research before so you can make stronger arguments or evidences. You need to persuade the other person through arguments about the stance you took about the subject chosen. While doing this essay, it’s better to find a good topic to talk about, consider both sides of the topic (the one you’re defending and one or more opposites sides), gather relevant evidence that support your thesis and use a good structure. Since you’re going to use sources to make stronger arguments, remember to cite properly.
Compare and Contrast
An essay of comparison and contrast consists of clarifying to the reader characteristics about two or more situations or objects. Usually it describes their positive and negative points on both sides. This type of text can focus on only compare, only contrast or both. You could make comparisons between two situations or objects without confronting them and saying that one is better than the other. On the other hand, you can only describe contrasts about the situation or object, being able to be specific about the positive or negative characteristics of both.
Cause and Effect
A cause and effect essay is a type of essay where the writer has to explain an effect or reaction that was a consequence of a specific action and why this cause resulted in that effect. Although it may sound simple, there are different structures that the writers can use on their text, consequently it’s better to look out for a good structure that will attend the author’s need.
Paraphrasing and Summarizing
Summarizing is a writing tool to rewrite someone’s idea into other words, focusing on the main points of that. It is usually a shorter phrase in comparison with the whole text where ideas are taken from because it gives an overview of that. When summarizing, the writer must be clear to restate all the supporting points and to omit the less important ones, like examples and details, being careful to do not lose the central purpose of the assignment.
Paraphrasing, in its turn, is a way to restate a phrase with other words without making it shorter. To paraphrase something, the writer has to modify the words and structure of a sentence without changing the meaning and providing the exact same information of the original phrase. Thus, the size of the original and the rewrited phrase is generally very similar.
In both tools, giving the phrases references is extremely important to avoid plagiarism. Therefore, even if the writer summarizes or paraphrases another writer’s idea, he has to restate it writing who is the author of the idea and where it can be found.
Uses and Importance
Academic intellectual production consists of two main skills: summarize and paraphrase. Both are extremely important in the process of acquiring knowledge and scientific writing. Thus, because they are processes that constitute textual production and interpretation, they are often used automatically without the author's perception.
During the scientific text production, the ability to summarize is important, since the author needs to read several texts and extract the main points in order to understand and apply them in the text. However, the author should be careful and avoid personal opinions that can affect the judgment about the relevant topics to be included in the summary, once this may misrepresent the original idea of the text to be summarized.
During academic textual production, paraphrasing is used to transcribe the main idea of an author without plagiarizing it. Commonly used in scientific articles introduction, paraphrasing allows the author to discuss the various subjects to be approached, creating a line of argument to introduce, justify and contextualize the text. Similarly, in the discussion, paraphrasing helps the author to compare, discuss, and conclude the subject by giving credit to the original authors.
Thus, summarize and paraphrase are essential in textual construction to demonstrate comprehension, interpretation and critical analysis of the theme, adding evidence to the text without using plagiarism.
Differences
Aware of definitions and the importance of knowing how to use summarizing and paraphrasing skills, some differences between them must be pointed. Those differences can help you use them correctly.
Despite both being writing tools that you have to practice using your own words to explain a point, whereas paraphrasing is kind of a rewrite, keeping all the details, translating the author’s idea in your own style, summarizing is cutting the details, focusing on the main idea to give an overview of most important information.
In addition, paraphrased texts are usually the same length of the original text, while a summary can be significantly shorter, once it aims to save reader’s time. Another important difference is that each paraphrase is based on just one specific source, and a summary can congregate many sources and different ideas, simplifying them to turn it into a support idea.
Therefore, both skills requires a deep understanding of the article, paper or book that you want to summarize or paraphrase, comprehension, and full attention to highlight what is more or less important, to identify what is an idea that the meaning can’t change and what is just the writer’s style. In school and university, you might have to write expository essays as in-class exercises, exam questions, or coursework assignments.
Sometimes it won’t be directly stated that the assignment is an expository essay, but there are certain keywords that imply expository writing is required. Consider the prompts below.
The word “explain” here is the clue: An essay responding to this prompt should provide an explanation of this historical process—not necessarily an original argument about it.

In many ways, the invention of the printing press marked the end of the Middle Ages. The medieval period in Europe is often remembered as a time of intellectual and political stagnation. Prior to the Renaissance, the average person had very limited access to books and was unlikely to be literate. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century allowed for much less restricted circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.
The body of your essay is where you cover your topic in depth. It often consists of three paragraphs, but may be more for a longer essay. This is where you present the details of the process, idea or topic you’re explaining.
It’s important to make sure each paragraph covers its own clearly defined topic, introduced with a topic sentence . Different topics (all related to the overall subject matter of the essay) should be presented in a logical order, with clear transitions between paragraphs.

The invention of the printing press in 1440 changed this situation dramatically. Johannes Gutenberg, who had worked as a goldsmith, used his knowledge of metals in the design of the press. He made his type from an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony, whose durability allowed for the reliable production of high-quality books. This new technology allowed texts to be reproduced and disseminated on a much larger scale than was previously possible. The Gutenberg Bible appeared in the 1450s, and a large number of printing presses sprang up across the continent in the following decades. Gutenberg’s invention rapidly transformed cultural production in Europe; among other things, it would lead to the Protestant Reformation.
