Critical Thinking Matters. Humanities Should Care.
Presented originally at the 2020 conference of Humanities Education and Research Association. Now annotated. .
Thomas E. “TR” Ruddick, ret.
This set of slides was used during my presentation at the Humanities Education and Research Association conference, Chicago. March 4, 2020.
I find that I miss the days when presenters would photocopy the presentation and hand them out to those in attendance. That custom seems to have been abandoned, especially as more of us present extemporaneously using slides.
So I felt it was a good idea to add some material to my original Google Slides presentation and make it available to the general public. I am adding slides formatted like this one--different font, blue on light gray--to fill in the spoken parts of the conference presentation.
There is some material here that’s included that is copyrighted; I’m using it either with permission of within the “fair use” provisions of the law.
I noted at the conference that this presentation will include some baad humor and bad examples. The first case of bad humor follows--
Critical Thinking is
Like the Weather.
- Everybody talks about it.
- Nobody does anything about it.
Here are some statistics on the value of critical thinking in higher education. There are dozens of similar studies, all reaching similar conclusions.
I include only the first two of four categories identified by AACU, and the first one is of interest because Humanities is first place--so we can feel good about our disciplines.
But the relevant returns, shown more clearly on the second slide, place critical thinking is a strong second and statistically tied for first.
Edited from American Association of Colleges and Universities, https://www.aacu.org/sites/default/files/files/LEAP/TopLearningOutcomesforStudents_2009vs2015.pdf
Given the strong support for critical thinking, what are we doing about it?The data suggests that we’re doing nothing specific.I did a loose replication of the following research, posting a query to HERA’s Facebook group, to my personal email list of around 100 Ohio humanities educators, and to an online query site. I received 3 responses, only one of which contained specifics. The essence of that single usable response will be shared at the end of the presentation.
Though the overwhelming majority (89%) claimed critical thinking to be a primary objective of their instruction, only a small minority (19%) could give a clear explanation of what critical thinking is. Furthermore, according to their answers, only 9% of the respondents were clearly teaching for critical thinking on a typical day in class.

- What are the intellectual skills needed for critical thinking?
- Are the humanities particularly suited to developing any of those skills, especially in early college classes?
- How may we improve our own methods for teaching those skills?
To teach critical thinking, we must identify the knowledge and skills that are needed. There are many studies that do so, and while there are minor variations their conclusions are essentially similar. I’m drawing from the Delphi Report (1990) of the American Philosophical Association.
We note on the next slide that critical thinking skills carry over; learn them in one subject and you can use them in others. However, in many cases discipline-specific knowledge is prerequisite to critical thinking--but as the following slide notes, even hghtly qualified professionals sometimes have a difficult time formulating a solid criticism in their fields. It seems we should not expect a first-year student to think critically in physics, nursing, psychology.
Humanities courses are among the areas where a student may obtain enough discipline=specific knowledge to engage in criticism in a first-year class. The criticism will not be as advanced as at a professional conference, but the student can do a competent job.
“Although the identification and analysis of CT skills transcend, in significant ways, specific subjects or disciplines, learning and applying these skills in many contexts requires domain-specific knowledge.”

b. Self-correction
The previous slide was taken from the Delphi report. There were also similar findings for affective components which we won’t consider here.
In the next slide, I have highlighted those sub-skills that I believe we may address effectively in a first-year humanities class.
a . Querying evidence
a . Stating results
Only 18% of first-year college students are able to distinguish between fact, opinion, and reasoned judgment. (ACT National Curriculum Survey, 2016)
Given a set of statements from news articles, only 26% of adults correctly identified all of the factual statements, and only 35% correctly identified all of the opinions. A similar proportion confused facts and opinions consistently. (Distinguishing Between Factual and Opinion Statements in the News. Pew Research Center, June 18, 2018)
We know that it’s necessary for all critical thinking to distinguish fact from opinion. However, recently scholars are identifying a third category, which the ACT study cited previously calls “reasoned judgment”. The ability to reach a conclusion that emerges from some limited, inconclusive evidence is “reasoned judgment” or “inference”.
In order to help students distinguish between fact, opinion, and inference in the arts, we need a framework, a sort of “periodic table” to help then organize their thinking. I have found such a framework in critical thinking sections of some general humanities texts, including Sporre and also Janaro and Altshuler. I hafe not found it in any texts for art history, music appreciation, theatre appreciation, or literature--though I believe it could be productively included in those classes as well.
Emund Burke Feldman is not credited in any of those texts, so I’m hoping that the time I spent tracking the idea back to him will inspire reecognition.
Categorization and analysis in arts criticism:
Edmund Burke Feldman’s Four Modes
- Descriptive: the content
- Analytical: the arrangement
- Evaluative: personal response
- Interpretive: deeper meaning
Authors have now collapsed Feldman’s first two categories into one, so that descriptive criticism now includes content and form.
If we chart Feldman’s modes of criticism against the ACT categories of fact, opinion, and reasoned inference--or Yuval Harari’s objective, subjective, and intersubjective--we find close corresponence.
- Descriptive: content plus form
- Interpretive
- Descriptive
ACT typology:
- Reasoned inference
Yuval Harari:
- Intersubjective
It’s necessary to extend our framework to help students learn to do the three modes of criticism competently. Most texts talk about descriptive criticism as covering content and form (one test insists the two are intertwined as a content-form or form-content). It seems clear that there are more points of description than those two. Consider, for example, all of the “Madonna and Child” themed paintings over the past 1500 years--all identical content and almost always the same arrangement, but something else permits us to distinguish among them.
For that “something else” I turn to Cicero.
Cicero’s “canons of rhetoric” as an organizing principle for descriptive criticism:
- Invention (Latin Inventio Greek heuresis )
- Arrangement (Latin dispositio Greek taxis
- Style (Latin elocutio Greek lexis
- Memory (Latin memoria Greek mneme )
- Delivery (Latin pronunciatio or actio Greek hypokrisis )
Note: The idea seems to predate Cicero, you may, for instance, find the same ideas essentially stated in Book II of Aritsotle’s PoeticsI.
I had wondered if this was my original idea. I suspected not and searched for years for an earlier example. By chance, I stumbled upon this passage from “The Recptionist”, a memoir of Janet Groth’s work at the New Yorker. In it she’s in an automobile with a colleague.
“iT WAS 1974,the figure was E. L. Doctorow, and the work was Ragtime , which had just come out. I praised it as wildly and playfully original, a work of genius. Joe (Mitvchell) saw it as totally false from start to finish, the work of a charlatan. Inwardly, I quailed at finding myself in dispute with a man whom I considered my mentor. I was appalled at the precarious limb on which I suddently found myself perched; in my nervousness I started to babble about the five parts of Cicero’s Rhetoricby which to measure thee merits of a work--dispositio. erlocutio, memoria, pronunciatio, and inventio- -even going so far, though I had never had a lesson in Latin in my life, to give the terms in Latin. Not content with this display of rank pomposity, I said that furthermore, it was this last trait, , invrntion (something told me to pronounce it “in-WHEN-tio”) that nobody else seemed to be doing any longer and that had so impressed me about Ragtime .
Janet Groth was kind enough to recall for me that she’d gotten the idea of applying Cicero from a lecture by Walter Ong--and through Ong I was able to trace it back to its first source. My thanks to her for her assistance and also for illustrating the principle that one must do a thorough description before engaging in evaluation--even if her analysis now strikes her as a bad example.
So f we take Peter Ramus as our guide, we may drop mremoria from the canon and, with a little extension, take the categories not only beyod rhetoric into all literature, but into all human expresison.
Peter Ramus (1515-1572) re-thought Cicero’s canons:
- Separated rhetoric from dialectic (logic); elocutio and dispositio are now focus of rhetoric.
- Extended Rhetoric to include criticism of any literature.
- Considered memoria to be psychology, not rhetoric.
Applying Cicero’s Canon as received through Peter Ramus to Descriptive Criticism:
- Arrangement
What, specifically, may we expect a student to do when applying these Ciceronian ideas to a work of art in any medium?
Concept analysis:
- Content--representational or presentational?
- Content--common themes
- Intent--purely aesthetic or didactic or practical
Arrangement analysis:
- Balanced/regular vs imbalanced/irregular
- Visual arts = geometric; performing/literary arts = temporal
- Standard forms (symphony, full-body portrait, contrapposto pose, sonnet)
- Styles of an entire cultural period (Baroque, Edo Period, Pharaonic Egypt)
- Styles of “movements” (Impressionism, Bebop, Acid Rock)
- Styles unique to individuals (Goya’s grotesque dark style; Hendrix’ guitar style, Sophocles’ style of tragic drama)
Technique: how skilled is the artist? Note: not a value judgment, which would be evaluative criticism. Requires technical knowledge--can the student tell if the musician is out of tune, if the dramatist included inconsistencies, if the dancer missed the landing on the entrechat?
Having done a thorough description, the student now may evaluate.
The link on the next slide should call up bad example #2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcbXCMvpmWo
Bevis and Butt-head are engaging in the example in evaluative criticism--but not at the college level.
Our first-year student should be encouraged to state the standards for the evaluation. Can they do it like Janet Groth and identify the specific aspects of the work they find sublime or deplorable? Are they able to reveal personal standards for their valuation? For highest marks, are they able to cite the aesthetics of one or more noted philosophers or critics to support their opinions?
The link on the following slide is bad example #3.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpvjVdYxWJ4
Most would agree that this clip presents an interpretation of Shakespeare that’s sketchy at best. Among other objections, it seems clear that if Shakespeare had wanted to deal with homosexuality he would have made it plain in the text, as did his contemporary Christopher Marlowe in several of his plays and poems.
So the standard for interpretation is to support it with evidence from the text itself, as the lead actor attempts to do in the film clip by citing Richard’s lust for Lady Anne.
What follows are a few ideas for specific assignments and classroom activities to promote student critical thinking. I fear that the ones I’m providing are a little pedestrian and uninspired. I’d welcome any other suggestions--email to [email protected] --and it I like yours I’ll add it and give you credit as I have Professor Kelsey/
Suggestions:
Criticism Reports
- Written or oral
- Students select any work of art, perhaps assigning different media to different students
- Expectation: student will describe (using Cicero’s canons), evaluate, and interpret the chosen work
- Good assignment for early in semester
Dialectic (Socratic Method)
- Introduce questions prompting students to evaluate or interpret
- Follow up with probes:
- Why do you think so?
- What is the evidence for ot?
- What are the weaknesses in it?
- Ask if other students have a different idea.
Thanks to Khrystine Danielle Kelsey. Salt Lake Community College
Exam Questions that require application
- Works for essay or multiple choice
- Have students experience a work of art that was not covered in class and apply principles to it.
- Ask students to choose a historical event in the art and imagine actually being there, prompting detailed description and personal evaluation.
Research Essay
- Focus on interpretive criticism and reasoned inference.
- Student selects a famous work of art and researches to find 2 competing interpreteations
- The completed essay must focus on discovering the evidence that supports each interpretation and concluding which one is stronger
- Require following a style manual

Differentiation Strategies for High-End Learners: A Response to Instruction Critical and creative thinking
Critical & Creative Thinking: Pre-assessment • What is critical thinking? • What is creative thinking?
Critical Thinking Skills • What is critical thinking? • Applying known information to new situations • Categorizing • Identifying Patterns • Comparing and contrasting • Thinking from different perspectives • Recognizing cause and effect
Critical Thinking Skills • Questioning assumptions • Deductive & Inductive Reasoning • Inferring • Evaluating • Showing insight • Generalizing
Critical Thinking Skills • Why is critical thinking important? • To be able to make intelligent decisions • To be able to reason through problems • To be able to apply what one knows to new problems and situations • To be able to communicate effectively • To be able to function well in life and be a good citizen in a democratic society • To be able to make connections and discern patterns in order to see the “bigger picture.”
Critical and Creative Thinking Skills: Pre-Assessment • What is creative thinking? The ability to synthesize old or known information, concepts, or skills into original or unusual ideas, products, or perspectives in order to solve a problem or for artisitic production.
Critical and Creative Thinking Skills • Elements of Creativity • Fluency • Flexibility • Originality • Elaboration
Critical & Creative Thinking: Pre-assessment • Why is creativity important? “We are attempting to educate students today so that they will be ready to solve future problems that have not yet been identified using technologies not yet invented based on scientific knowledge not yet discovered.” J.J. Lagowski
Critical & Creative Thinking • “In the Twenty-first century, creativity is [and will continue to be] at least as important as literacy.” Sir Ken Robinson
Critical & Creative Thinking:Pre-assessment • Which of the following levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy involve critical and creative thinking? Answer: C, D, E, F A. Knowledge B. Comprehension C. Application D. Analysis E. Evaluation F. Synthesis
Critical & Creative Thinking • Bloom’s Taxonomy Synthesis Evaluation Analysis Application Comprehension Knowledge
Critical & Creative Thinking • Special Needs of gifted children and youth • Depth • Complexity • Acceleration • Opportunities for creative production In their area/s of giftedness
Critical & Creative Thinking • When should we engage in critical and creative thinking? • Every day • Who should engage in critical and creative thinking? • All students • Gifted students often and with greater intensity • How can I make the time? • Embed in everyday lessons
Critical & Creative Thinking • Embedding creative thinking into the classroom • Divergent thinking (Brainstorming, Productive Thinking) • Independent research and learning centers • Open-ended questioning • Student choice in process and product • Thinker Keys
Critical & Creative Thinking • How can I embed critical and creative thinking into everyday lessons? • Debrief lessons and activities using the “What, So What, Now What?” Factor. • Allow time for metacognition. • Encourage students to solve problems through multiple strategies. • Encourage students to question the status quo and engage in discussions about controversial issues.
Critical & Creative Thinking • More ways to embed critical and creative thinking into daily classroom activities • Choice of assignments • Open ended questioning & assignments • Anchor activities • Tiered learning centers • Mind Maps http://mywebspiration.com/user
Critical & Creative Thinking • Independent learning centers • Squiggle Station • Invention Center • Building Center • Creative Writing Center • Logic Center • Web Quest http://webquest.org • Metaphors in content area: Egs. • President:Democracy::_______:Monarchy • Moon:Earth::Earth: _______
Critical & Creative Thinking Debriefing: “What, So What, Now What?” • What? (The facts) • So What? Now that we know the facts, how do they: • Affect us? The community? The world? The environment? Society? • What connections can be made between this topic and another topic now that we know these facts? • How the same? How different? • Is there a central theme or concept that emerges?
Critical & Creative Thinking • Now what? • Now that we know about this, are there problems or controversies? • What can be done about it? • If something is done, what might be the effects, directly and indirectly? • What can I do? (Do I want to do anything about it?) • What careers, professions, or technologies might be involved in this action? • Students do not have to answer all of the “So what, Now What?” questions. These are leading questions to get them thinking on a higher level in Bloom’s Taxonomy. But they should answer some. Teachers can differentiate the depth and complexity of the report, if necessary, by requiring students only to address questions 1 and 2. “Now what”? could be an additional tier for the high-end learners.
Critical & Creative Thinking • Let’s look at some activities that engage students in critical and creative thinking.
Critical & Creative Thinking • Critical and creative thinking in the content areas • Language Arts: • EnhancedVenn diagram to compare character traits or character feelings among multiple characters, or themes among authors. • Chain link organizer to sequence connecting events. • “Cause and Effect” organizer to map an “event” in a story or a concept; then map the causes and effects. (This works well as an approach to class discipline, as well.) • Rewrite a story from the perspective of a different character
Critical & Creative Thinking • Math: • Students list (as a group or individually) many, varied, unusual uses for numbers, Algebra, Calculus, etc. • Students are given a math problem. How many different ways can they demonstrate to solve it? (Thinker Keys) • What if the numeral “0” took a vacation? (Thinker Keys) • Make a transformation of < , > , =, or any other math sign.
Critical & Creative Thinking • Social Studies • Enhanced Venn diagram to compare 4 different types of governments- democracy, communism, socialism, Fascism. • Cause/Effect Chain to explore either the causes or the effects of the current economic downturn, the stimulus package, or any current event; also effects of natural disasters, etc. • Triple Entry Journal as students read content from a primary document or text chapter.
Critical & Creative Thinking • Science • Cause/Effect Map to describe a science experiment. • Rubrics to evaluate their science demonstrations for a science fair. • Outline on paper and then construct a new invention related to a scientific problem (The Inventions Key) • Think Fast using a crucial “concept” word. • Mind map to explain the interdependence of elements of an ecosystem.
How can YOU infuse critical and creative thinking strategies into your daily curriculum?
Critical & Creative Thinking: • A final thought… • “The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.” — Alan Alda
Critical & Creative Thinking • Upload your lesson plan to the Moodle Class website. • Elementary : http://atim.cc/course/view.php?id=377 • Secondary : http://atim.cc/course/view.php?id=378 • Teach the lesson • Follow-Up: • Webinar to discuss the effectiveness of the lesson and how to continue improvement Date: • WIKI to write a minimum of four paragraphs reflecting on the effectiveness of the lesson and how to continue improvement. In addition, post feedback to two other teacher postings.
