Prologue: joining cerberus, act 1: putting together your team, act 2 – part 1: finishing recruitment, act 2 – part 2: gaining loyalty, act 3: endgame.

For the most part, Mass Effect 2 is a linear RPG. However, the game does give you some freedom when it comes to mission order. Each act of the adventure has an abundance of quests to take on, and it doesn't matter which you do first or which you save for later.

Find out how to find all the upgrades for The Normandy and Shepard including your omni tools, shields, weapons, and even your squadmates.

Yet, playing each mission in a specific order can improve a playthrough in various ways. For instance, if you complete quests in the optimal sequence, you lower the risk of losing characters by the end of the game. Plus, your narrative experience can be enhanced simply by doing certain missions at certain times. So, here is the order in which you should complete all of the main content.

Updated January 26, 2024 By Ben Jessey: You can play most of the Mass Effect 2 missions in any order you want. However, there is an optimal order that improves the narrative experience and keeps characters alive. We laid out that optimal order in this guide. And now, we've returned to the piece to make sure it's still accurate and easy to read.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Second Game When Shepard Wakes up

During Mass Effect 2's prologue, you have no control over which missions you play . The sequence of events includes an attack on the Normandy, Shepard joining Cerberus, and a visit to Freedom's Progress.

The lack of freedom in the opening stages makes sense as the game slowly introduces you to its mechanics and sets up the story.

Mission Order:

Reason For Playing Now

You have to complete them in this order.

Things start to open up once the prologue ends as the Illusive Man gives you multiple recruitment missions to do at your leisure . You also have a few other quests to keep you busy.

Optimal Mission Order:

Mission

Reason For Playing Now

A few characters suggest that your first objective should be to head to Omega to meet the Professor. However, it seems more appropriate to visit the wreckage of the original Normandy to say one last goodbye before getting into the game.

Three of your future squadmates are on Omega, so that's where you should head next. Zaeed is near the entrance to the space station, and you're guaranteed to pass him upon entry. His dossier 'quest' is just a simple conversation. Thus, there's no need to ignore the veteran merc.

Picking up Mordin Solus early makes a lot of sense because, at that point, he's the most valuable person to have on the team as he can help deal with the Collector seeker swarms. Logically, Shepard wouldn't go for anyone else first besides Zaeed.

Recruiting Archangel is the last vital thing to do on Omega in the early stages. Therefore, you may as well find the vigilante after you've got Mordin.

This one can be done anytime before the Reaper IFF mission as it's not that important.

You’ll want to go to the Citadel at this point in the game. Like Zaeed, this mission is one conversation, which takes place right where you enter the station.

It can be argued that you should do this quest earlier. After all, Shepard is likely excited to see Anderson for the first time in a while. Yet, during the assignment, Anderson and the Council share their concerns about you working for Cerberus. The line of questioning surrounding Shepard's new organization works better when you've actually done a few missions for them.

It's nice to complete this one soon after meeting Kasumi as the specifics and reasoning for the mission are fresh in your mind. Although, you can really do it anytime before the Reaper IFF.

It doesn’t matter what order you do the Jack and Grunt dossier missions as long as they're completed after the other quests in this act.

This mission triggers after you recruit Mordin, Garrus, Jack, and Grunt.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Thane During His Recruitment Mission

After the Horizon quest, the Illusive Man points you toward three more people you should recruit. Plus, this is when loyalty missions start appearing, so make sure you're regularly talking to your teammates.

For the first part of this act, you can only do five quests before triggering the next Collector assignment.

Mission

Reason For Playing Now

Story-wise, it makes sense for you to recruit Tali straight away in Act 2 because of Shepard’s pre-existing relationship with the Quarian. What's more, she's arguably .

Both the Justicar and Assassin dossier quests are initiated on Illium, so it's good to get them done one after another. It doesn't matter which mission you do first.

At this point, you’ve only got two quests left to complete before triggering the next Collector mission. Therefore, it's a good opportunity to do the two Loyalty missions on Tuchanka (Grunt and Mordin).

Once you've completed five missions after Horizon, this critical quest will automatically begin.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Jacob Threatening His Father

You have plenty of freedom in the wake of the Collector Ship investigation as the game doesn't force you to start the next mission. In fact, you want to avoid initiating the Reaper IFF quest for quite some time .

Instead, the second part of Act 2 is about getting almost all of the loyalty missions done . And these quests are crucial because they help you keep everyone alive during the Suicide Mission .

Mission

Reason For Playing Now

The order in which you do most loyalty missions isn't important. However, besides Kasumi and Zaeed, Miranda or Jacob will likely ask for help first. Therefore it's logical that Shepard wouldn't leave the two Cerberus agents waiting too long.

Because of the close bond Shepard and Garrus share, the Commander would help the Turian before most others.

As Thane's search for his son takes place in the same area as the Garrus quest, aka the Citadel, you should do this right afterward.

It doesn't matter when you do Samara's quest as long as it's before the Reaper IFF.

When Tali tells you about her trial, she'll strongly encourage you to deal with it immediately. However, there's no actual timer on the mission, and it's better to save it until you've built up enough Paragon or Renegade points to get the quest's best ending.

After Jack's mission, you’ll need to break up a fight between her and Miranda. To keep the loyalty of them both, you need to have a high enough percentage of Paragon or Renegade points. Even though it's based on percentage, it seems easier to keep them both happy in the later stage of the game. Also, you witness some of the awful things Cerberus has done during the quest, which from a narrative standpoint makes sense to do now that you're late in the game.

This is another one that shows you more of the sick experiments Cerberus was doing. Once again it works better at this point just before Shepard's relationship with the organization starts to deteriorate.

Zaeed's mission will be available for a long time, and this is pretty much your last chance to do it. You don't have to leave it this late, but as Paragon players need to pass a very high morality check to make Zaeed loyal, it's best to save it until now.

Mass Effect 2: Should You Save The City Or The Spaceport?

In the quest N7: Javelin Missiles Launched, Shepard needs to make a tough choice: save the city or the spaceport?

Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition Screenshot Of Legion Aiming Sniper

Act 3 serves as the endgame , and it doesn't allow much time for side content. So, make sure that you've done everything before starting these quests .

Mission

Reason For Playing Now

Completing this mission sets in motion the last stretch of the game.

After acquiring Legion from the IFF quest, you'll need to activate and talk to him multiple times to receive his loyalty mission. You may need to travel to a different part of the ship and come back to get him to talk to you again after the first conversation. For the best possible ending to the game, you'll want to help Legion as soon as you can.

This short mission will start the next time you use the galaxy map after the Reaper IFF has finished installing.

If you want to save everyone on the Normandy crew, you'll have to enter the Omega 4 relay almost immediately after the last quest. By using the relay, you'll initiate the Suicide Mission.

As it’s disconnected from the main story, you can do Lair of the Shadow Broker after the credits have rolled. Plus, if Legion survived the last quest, you get a rare chance to use him for what is arguably .

Arrival is a great way to end Mass Effect 2 as it works as a bridge between the second and third games.

Can I safely complete all assignments after the final mission?

I'm currently working on my second playthrough of Mass Effect 2. In the first, I skipped the N7 and DLC assignments because I wanted to save them for my completionist playthrough (this one). I'm currently planning on doing them after I finish the final mission, however, I want to make sure that I'm not going to end up with any of them locked out or blocked because of changing circumstances after you finish the main story.

If I decide to wait to complete these assignments until after the going through the Omega 4 Relay and beating the final boss, will I still be able to complete them all?

  • Based on the current answer (but contrary to its conclusion), I assume if you make the right decisions on the other side of the Omega 4 Relay there's nothing that would prevent you from finishing up the DLC assignments...but I'm not positive. –  Tim Stone Commented Mar 2, 2012 at 13:44
  • 1 For a completionist run, I would recommend doing all side missions before going after the Reaper IFF, since at that point you can delay the main story indefinitely without any consequences. –  hammar Commented Mar 3, 2012 at 2:16

There is a possibility of locking yourself out of some things here:

If you somehow do not survive the suicide attack, your game will end after the final mission, so you will not be able to complete anything else after that. If you did not do the loyalty missions of a few followers and they die on the suicide mission, then you will not be able to finish their quests afterwards. If you somehow ran out of money and can't buy fuel, you won't be able to visit sectors not containing a mass relay.

Other than that, after the suicide mission you will be placed back in your ship and have the chance to explore and do whatever you want. Some DLCs, such as the Shadowbroker, actually makes more sense to complete after the suicide mission since the dialog is geared towards that.

  • But Shadow Broker can be so useful before the suicide mission (namely resource rich planets and shipments). –  MBraedley Commented Mar 2, 2012 at 15:55
  • @MBraedley Having indulged in my OCD tendencies during my latest ME2 playthrough, I can say with certainty that the Shadow Broker planet resources are absolutely unnecessary and probably not even particularly helpful. I depleted every planet in the game and after all upgrades, had ~1 million of every resource except Element Zero, which was at ~200k. –  Sterno Commented Mar 2, 2012 at 17:39
  • @Sterno: Yes, but some of us don't have such extreme OCD and actually want to get on with the story and not spend endless hours playing a mini-game that isn't really all that fun. –  MBraedley Commented Mar 2, 2012 at 20:53
  • @MBraedley I agree, and I hope no one else does what I did! My point was really just that the galaxy has an overabundance of resources, even before the DLC. –  Sterno Commented Mar 2, 2012 at 21:02
  • 2 The dialog in the Shadow Broker DLC changes slightly if you play it before or after the final mission. Very nice touch. –  Adeese Commented Mar 2, 2012 at 22:31

How Baldur's Gate 3 Finally Taught Me To Use All My Spells

Black myth: wukong devs share how to fix technical issues, is starfield: shattered space free dlc cost explained.

The galaxy can be a massive, sometimes overwhelming place, and exploring it in Mass Effect 2 can be an overwhelming undertaking. Securing squadmate loyalty is a major focus of Mass Effect 2 , particularly prior to the endgame Suicide Mission, where characters' survival depends on the player's choices. With 12 total squadmates, including DLC characters, players will need to make time and plan to complete 12 loyalty missions. Many loyalty missions rely on Shepard's Paragon or Renegade score, which is based on the player's moral choices during the game. It will be in a player's best interest to save the loyalty missions that require demanding Paragon/Renegade checks until they near the end of the main story. With Mass Effect: Legendary Edition launching later this year , returning fans and newcomers alike may find themselves wondering when to complete the various main story and side missions for optimal results.

Related:  Mass Effect 2: How to Unlock The Secret Bonus Power

While there is no single right way to explore and complete missions in Mass Effect 2 , fans generally agree that there are some missions best saved for late-game to ensure the player has as many options and available outcomes as possible when it counts. Additionally, there are times in the game where a main mission will cut in and cannot be skipped or put off, or where a player will cross a point of no return. At these times, having a plan can position players for success. Here's an optimal way to complete missions in Mass Effect 2 .

Optimal Mission Order for Mass Effect 2

Illium in Mass Effect 2

The optimal mission order for Mass Effect 2 ensures players can earn enough Paragon or Renegade points to access all possible Charm/Intimidate conversation options and outcomes and keep and maintain squad loyalty. Ultimately, the goal is to keep everyone alive during the Suicide Mission . It also ensures Shepard can gain access to key areas, like the Tech Lab aboard the Normandy, or find important weapons and upgrades.

Depending on Shepard's class and the selected difficulty setting, different mission orders may produce more desirable outcomes. Generally, however, fans point to this structure as having the most advantages for the greatest number of play styles.

Players should remember to scan planets in the systems they visit for resources any time they enter a new location. In doing so, they may discover anomalies. These are optional side missions that award credits, resources, experience, and sometimes upgrades, but none have any effect on the main story or the outcome of Mass Effect 3 . Players are free to complete these whenever and wherever they wish.

Tali, Thane, and Grunt ready their weapons during the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2

The Prologue is mandatory, and players will not have a choice about what to do or where to go until it has been completed and Shepard is aboard the Normandy SR-2.

  • Prologue: Save Joker
  • Prologue: Awakening (following character creation)
  • Freedom's Progress
  • Normandy SR-2 -  Meet the new Crew, get comfortable with the ship, and pick up side missions from Sergeant Gardener, Dr. Chakwas, and engineers Ken and Gabby.

The VIP Section of the Afterlife nightclub on Omega in Mass Effect 2

There are two ways to approach the start of Act One. Players can either start on the Citadel or Omega. Both are hubs with good weapons, armor, and upgrades to purchase, and players can recruit squadmates, including the DLC characters , at each location. Ultimately, players will find there are more missions on Omega than the Citadel, but the order of these can be switched at any time.

  • Dossier: The Veteran (Zaeed) - Players will immediately find Zaeed upon leaving the Normandy SR-2 and finding out Aria wants to speak with them.
  • Omega: Aria T'Loak -  Players can unlock an optional side mission, Omega: The Patriarch , by talking to Grizz. They can also find the Serrice Ice Brandy at the Afterlife bar for Dr. Chakwas. In the Market District, they will find the FBA Couplings at Kenn's Salvage.
  • Dossier: The Professor (Mordin) - Unlocks the Tech Lab on the Normandy and allows players to begin making upgrades to weapons, armor, and the ship. Players should speak to every squadmate about Normandy Upgrades and make all Ship Upgrades prior to the run to the Collector base.
  • Dossier: Archangel (Garrus) - Make sure to bring the datapad info back to Aria for a reward.
  • Investigate the Normandy Crash Site
  • Project Firewalker -  There are 5 separate assignments to this mission. Players can start with Project Firewalker: Rosalie Lost here and choose whether to complete the rest now or later in the game.
  • Dossier: The Thief (Kasumi) -  Players will find Kasumi immediately upon arrival at the Citadel. After this, they should head to the Presidium to meet with Anderson. They can find special ingredients for Sergeant Gardener and Serrice Ice Brandy for Dr. Chakwas at shops in the Wards.
  • Kasumi: Stealing Memory
  • Dossier: The Warlord (Grunt)
  • Dossier: The Convict (Jack)
  • Horizon -  Horizon is a mandatory mission that will trigger as soon as players complete the final dossier in this set. The four dossier missions (excluding Zaeed and Kasumi) are not optional.

Samara, the asari justicar in Mass Effect 2

Following the Horizon mission, players should begin speaking to their squadmates each time they disembark and then return to the Normandy. Yeoman Chambers will let Shepard know a specific squadmate wants to talk to them, which lets players know the loyalty mission has triggered. Players only get five missions between Horizon and the Collector Ship , so it is best to prioritize loyalty or recruitment missions. It's important to note that smaller fetch quests, including planet scanning for resources and Liara's quests on Illium, should not trigger the Collector Ship and are safe to complete. Investigating anomalies do count toward the five missions, however.

Players only need to complete two of the remaining dossier missions, so they can skip recruiting Tali, Samara, or Thane if they prefer.

  • Dossier: Tali (Tali) - Players should try to keep Kal'Reeger alive by convincing him to stand down.
  • Dossier: The Justicar (Samara) - Prior to this mission, players should make sure to find Liara and speak to her, as she has information about both Samara and Thane. Shepard can choose to help Liara with a few optional missions but should not choose the dialogue option to begin Lair of the Shadow Broker yet.
  • Dossier: The Assassin (Thane) - Bring the datapad found on this mission back to the frazzled salarian for a reward.
  • Grunt: Rite of Passage
  • Mordin: Old Blood
  • Collector Ship -  The Collector Ship is a mandatory mission that will trigger five missions, including anomaly investigation missions, following Horizon .

mass effect legendary edition garrus

During Act Three, players should take their time to finish all loyalty missions and any side missions they want to do before the endgame. They should not start the Reaper IFF mission until they have completed everything else, as this starts a timer that only allows room for completion of Legion's loyalty mission if players wish to save all members of the Normandy SR-2 crew. Players should save Lair of the Shadowbroker and Arrival until after the Suicide Mission for the most seamless transition to Mass Effect 3 .

Players should note that it is possible to fail Thane's, Samara's, Tali's, and Zaeed's loyalty mission. They will need to follow their teammates' instructions and sometimes will need to pass a demanding Paragon/Renegade check to succeed and secure loyalty.

  • Miranda: The Prodigal -  While back on Illium, players can finish any smaller missions they may have missed, including Liara's requests.
  • Jacob: The Gift of Greatness
  • Garrus: Eye for an Eye
  • Thane: Sins of the Father
  • Jack: Subject Zero -  Following this mission, Jack and Miranda will fight. Shepard needs to use the Charm/Intimidate dialogue option to break up the fight. Choosing sides will result in the loss of loyalty from one of the two women.
  • Samara: The Ardat-Yakshi
  • Tali: Treason
  • Zaeed: The Price of Revenge
  • Overlord DLC

The Normandy Crew held hostage in Collector pods in Mass Effect 2

At this point, players need to be certain they have met the following conditions:

  • All squadmates loyal
  • Researched Normandy armor, weapons, and shields upgrades (from Jacob, Garrus, and Tali respectively)
  • Completed all desired side missions
  • Purchased all desired equipment
  • Exhausted all dialogue options with squadmates
  • Made all desired weapons/armor upgrades

They can then proceed to the endgame.

me2 do assignments matter

Once players retrieve the Reaper IFF, they can only access the Galaxy Map once before the Collectors attack the Normandy. Following this attack, if they complete other missions ahead of going through the Omega-4 relay, they will lose crew members.

  • Reaper IFF -  Following this mission, players must decide what to do with Legion. They can either sell it or activate and recruit it. If they choose to recruit it, they will need to talk to it twice to unlock its loyalty mission.
  • Legion: A House Divided -  Following this mission, Legion and Tali will fight. Shepard needs to use the Charm/Intimidate dialogue option to break up the argument. Choosing sides will result in the loss of loyalty from the unsupported squadmate.
  • Collector Attack -  This small mission is mandatory. Players will control Joker and will need to follow EDI's instructions.
  • The Suicide Mission (Stop The Collectors & Collector Base )
  • Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC
  • Arrival DLC

It's important to note not every player will want to complete the main story of Mass Effect 2  the same way, and there is no wrong way to order missions. For example, if a player intends to romance Garrus Vakarian , they may enjoy the story more if they can start with  Dossier: Archangel , even ahead of Dossier: The Professor . As another example, if players have a strong moral direction for their Shepard, once they hear about a dire situation, such as Thane's son's assassination attempt or Tali's hearing, they may choose to complete those missions sooner, as their Shepard might choose to act fast despite possible ramifications. Ultimately, players can shift missions around to make the most sense for their story and desired outcomes.

Mass Effect 2 Point of No Return: what mission you should finish all your quests before starting

Mass Effect 2  has an open-ended narrative that lets you take on most of its main story quests in any order you like - and while you're at it, the game is constantly throwing a slew of side content at you. That naturally presents a classic worrying dilemma - that of finding the  point of no return , the point at which the story takes that freedom off you and carries you along towards the end.

We've put together a separate page to answer the larger question of the optimum Mass Effect 2 mission order for the main and DLC quests, but beyond that, if you're going your own way, you should absolutely know about the point of no return. ME2 has a couple of them - and in a way how hard and important each point of no return is depends on what sort of Shepard you're playing .

mass_Effect_2_point_of_no_return.jpg

Mass Effect 2 Point of No Return explained

The structure of Mass Effect 2 is an hourglass shape, repeated. You start out on a single path, then can branch out to a number of missions - then after all those missions are handled, it shrinks back to a single line again - before fanning back out. That means there's a few points at which control is wrested from you.

The important thing to note is that  no missions in ME2 disappear if left unfinished for a time . You can let missions linger for as long as you like, and even revisit them in the new game plus mode. However, if you're aiming to get the best possible ending of the game, one point of no return strongly influences ME2's finale .

Anyway - here's all the times that Mass Effect 2 takes control off you, and what you need to know about them as Points of No Return:

  • After getting the Normandy, you will be gradually given 4 standard character recruitment Dossiers (The Professor, Archangel, The Convict & The Warlord) and 2 DLC character recruitment Dossiers (The Master Thief & The Veteran). You can do these in any order you like, but after the 4th of the standard dossier missions is completed, you will be forced to undertake a story mission on Horizon.
  • After the events on Horizon, you'll be set loose on the galaxy again. After completing 5 main missions, you will again be forced to undertake a specific story mission on the Collector Ship.
  • After your visit to the Collector Ship, you are again set loose to complete any missions you like, including loyalty missions. Eventually, you will open up the option of the Acquire Reaper IFF mission. Starting the Acquire Reaper IFF mission is the 'soft' point of no return in ME2 .
  • The absolute final point of no return of ME2 is when you travel through the Omega 4 Relay. This will begin a sequence of events that leads to the credits, though you will also get a post-game save where you can mop up any remaining quests.

Acquire Reaper IFF as a point of no return

The reason why we say the  Acquire Reaper IFF  mission is a 'soft' point of no return is because once you start this mission, a clock begins ticking. Specifically, after you acquire the Reaper IFF, you will have the time to complete exactly one mission before a major story event takes place that is designed to force you to travel through the Omega 4 Relay and initiate the end of the game.

If you delay and complete more than one mission after getting the Reaper IFF, you will not be able to get the absolute best ending of ME2. This is all explained in more detail, with more spoilers, in our Mass Effect 2 Suicide Mission & endings guide .

So, we recommend you treat the Reaper IFF as your ME2 Point of No Return. Endeavor to complete every side quest and especially complete every ME2 loyalty mission , plus buy any upgrades or weapons you need before starting and completing the Reaper IFF mission , and you'll have the best chance at the end of the game. The only exception to this might be the Lair of the Shadow Broker (Give Liara Intel) and Arrival DLC missions - which arguably work better if you save them for the post-game. Good luck!

Mass Effect Wiki

Forum : Mass Effect 2 Optimal Mission Order

At first I found it difficult to complete all missions Mass Effect 2 Missions and at the same time finding a good sequence for the overall Mass Effect story. That is why I put together my own order. I have based the order of the mission on how I think they do most justice toe the overall Mass Effect story. I want to make clear once again it is my own order.

I want to mention that there are spoilers.

And please try not to pay attention to my writing if there are errors, English is my second language.

Mandatory Missions [ ]

Normandy SR-1. Following this the character creation process will begin.

Lazarus Project. You’ll be introduced to the game’s updated combat mechanics.

Freedom’s Progress. At the conclusion you will make a decision regarding a quarian named Veetor. The Paragon option can potentially help you greatly in a much later mission. Something to consider.

Normandy SR-2. You’ll be introduced to your new Normandy and your new crew. Dr. Chakwas and Mess Sergeant Gardener on the Crew Deck and Ken and Gabby on the Engineering Deck all have little side missions for you.

My Mission Order [ ]

First talk to Kelly Chambers, your new Yeoman, and make it a habit to talk to her after every mission. You’ll have some opportunities to flirt with her (either gender). Do it enough and eventually you can go on a small date with her. This has two benefits. The first is that she will offer to feed your fish for you (assuming you’ve bought some). The second is that this date helps secure her appearance in ME3. Dating her does not grant the Paramour achievement and does not interfere with any active romances. Feel free to date her and romance anyone else you want.

Citadel - Visit the Citadel

Immediately upon arrival you can recruit Kasumi.

Take a cab to the Presidium to meet Anderson and maybe get your Spectre status back. Visit the stores to get some upgrades. Use Charm/Intimidate to get a discount. There are a few other side missions you complete here as well. Meet your old reporter “friend” Miss Al-Jilani. Either punch her (Renegade Interrupt) or use Charm/Intimidate. Also complete Dr. Chakwas and Gardener’s side missions.

Omega - Visit Omega

Immediately upon arrival you can recruit Zaeed. Speak to Aria to learn where to find the Professor and Archangel. Visit the shops and use Charm/Intimidate to get discounts. You can complete Ken and Gabby’s side mission here. Help the quarian deal with his debt to Harrot the Elcor in any way you see fit.

Recruit the Professor (Mordin) - Complete the mission to recruit Mordin.

Mineral Scanning/Side Missions With Mordin on your team the Tech Lab is now open. You can research upgrades for your weapons, armor and the Normandy. Speak to your squadmates about upgrades to get some for the Normandy. All research projects require mineral resources to complete. You get these from scanning planets. Talk to Miranda to get the Mineral Scanner upgrade to make it easier. Focus only on planets that are Rich in mineral resources. Send probes down only for large deposits of minerals. Don’t waste probes on the small ones.

Take this opportunity to do some planet scanning. You’ll need plenty of resources for your upgrades. And if you have the patience, try to have at least 100,000 of each resource in your inventory before you begin the Suicide Mission. This will have an impact on ME3.

While scanning planets you may encounter some anomalies. These unlock side missions on uncharted worlds. None of these have an impact on the overall game or in ME3 so feel free to complete as many or as few of them as you wish. A few of these missions offer some upgrades while others just offer money and experience.

Firewalker / Normandy SR1

If you have the Firewalker and/or Normandy Crash Site DLCs this would be a good opportunity to do them. They’re easy and offer good money and experience rewards.

Kasumi’s Loyalty Mission

Any non-Soldier players will definitely want to complete this mission early on. Doing so unlocks the Locust, the best SMG in the game. Sometimes I even like to complete it before recruiting Mordin. The mission’s final decision impacts some dialogue in ME3 but ultimately it does not matter which you choose.

Recruit Archangel (Garrus)

Complete the mission to recruit Garrus. During this mission you may find a datapad Aria would be very interested in. Give it to her after the mission is complete for a reward.

Recruit the Convict (Jack)

Complete this mission to recruit Jack.

Recruit the Warlord (Grunt)

After this mission is complete remember to head down to the cargo hold to officially recruit Grunt.

Horizon (Mandatory)

Automatically triggers after you finish all the current dossiers.

Back on the Normandy

Following Horizon your squadmates will start giving you their Loyalty Missions. Keep talking to all of them to unlock them. There is no time limit on any of them so it doesn’t matter what order you finish them all in.

Recruit Tali

Complete the mission to recruit Tali. Try to get the quarian Kal’Reegar out of this alive. Either use the Paragon Interrupt to convince him to stand down or destroy the Colossus as quickly as possible. This can help in a later mission.

Illium is a new hub with lots of new shops, missions and side missions. Speak to Liara for information regarding Samara and Thane. Offer to help Liara and complete her side mission. If you have Lair of the Shadow Broker downloaded you’ll likely see a dialogue option to begin the mission. DO NOT PICK IT YET!!! I think this mission best fits after the Suicide Mission. Plus there have been reports of glitches if you pick this option before getting info about Samara and Thane.

Depending on your choices in ME1 you may meet some familiar faces from Noveria and Feros and a mysterious asari messenger. Speak to them and help them. For your Noveria friend be sure to pick the Charm/Intimidate options with the merchant before completing the mission or you may miss out on the store’s discount.

In the bar you may find everyone’s favorite idiot fanboy, Conrad Verner. Agree to help him and use Charm/Intimidate options at every opportunity. Be sure to talk to the asari bartender when you get the chance as well.

Recruit the Justicar (Samara)

Complete this mission to recruit Samara.

Recruit the Assassin (Thane)

Complete this mission to recruit Thane. During this mission you may find a datapad a salarian back in the Illium hub area is looking for. Recover it and return it for some extra experience and credits. You get some interesting dialogue during this mission if you’ve dealt with Nassana Dantius in ME1.

Tuchanka - Head to Tuchanka

Tuchanka is the krogan homeworld Mordin and Grunt’s Loyalty Missions can be completed here. Before heading out speak to the merchant Ratch and complete his little minigame to get a discount at his store. It may be best to complete Mordin and Grunt’s missions in one go without leaving the planet.

Mordin’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Mordin’s loyalty. The final decision of this mission will play a major role in ME3.

Grunt’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Grunt’s loyalty. For the battle against the thresher maw you simply need to survive five minutes against it. However the reward will be greater if you kill it. After the mission speak to “the Lord High Researcher” for a discount at his store.

Collector Vessel (Mandatory)

Automatically starts after completing five missions after Horizon. During this mission you can receive some weapon training in Assault Rifles, Sniper Rifles or Shotguns. If your class cannot use any of these weapons then picking one of these will unlock these weapons for use with that class. If a class can use a particular weapon they instead unlock a very powerful version of it. For example, an Infiltrator can use Sniper Rifles but not Assault Rifles or Shotguns. Picking AR or Shotguns unlocks the ability to use them. Picking Sniper Rifles unlocks the Widow, the game’s most powerful Sniper Rifle.

Miranda’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Miranda’s loyalty. In the last area where the final boss fight is check a crate near the exit. You will find a locket there that an asari in the Illium hub area is looking for.

Jacob’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Jacob’s loyalty.

Garrus’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Garrus’s loyalty.

Thane’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Thane’s loyalty. Warning, this mission can be failed. If you don’t have your Spectre status anymore, be sure to use all the Renegade Interrupts during the interrogation to get the information you need. When following your target do not lose sight of him for too long and be sure to keep Thane informed. Failing to do so will end the mission in failure.

Jack’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Jack’s loyalty. After this mission is complete Miranda and Jack will get into a fight. Be sure to use Charm/Intimidate to end the fight peacefully. If you do not you will lose either Jack or Miranda’s loyalty.

Samara’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Samara’s loyalty. Warning, this mission can be failed. When you’ve lured Morinth out DO NOT pick the “Family” or “Justicar” dialogue options. If you use all three Charm/Intimidate options when you are alone with Morinth you will have a choice of either helping Samara kill Morinth or help Morinth kill Samara. In the former Samara will become loyal and in the latter Morinth will take Samara’s place and be loyal.

Tali’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Tali’s loyalty. Warning, this mission can be failed. The outcome of this mission will have a big impact on ME3. During the first part of the trial be sure to take the two Charm/Intimidate options. During the trial’s second half at the conclusion of the mission you’ll have several possible outcomes.

You can present the evidence, preventing Tali’s exile but you’ll lose her loyalty. You can refrain from presenting the evidence, resulting in Tali’s exile but you’ll secure her loyalty. Neither of these outcomes is preferable.

For the very best outcome to this mission you MUST pick the final Charm/Intimidate option or the “Rally the Crowd” option. Please note that “Rally the Crowd” will only work if Veetor and Kal’Reegar are both alive and present at the trial.

Zaeed’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to earn Zaeed’s loyalty. Warning, this mission can be failed. This mission has two routes, the Paragon route and the Renegade route. The Renegade route will always secure Zaeed’s loyalty. If you take the Paragon route you must pass a very high Charm check to secure Zaeed’s loyalty.

Overlord (DLC)

This mission has several parts and it will take time to complete. You will fight a lot of geth so plan your party accordingly. The mission’s final decision will have an impact on ME3.

Endgame Preparations

You are approaching the Point-of-No-Return. Before you proceed ask yourself the following questions.

If the answer to all of these questions is “Yes” then proceed. If the answer to any of these questions is “No” then wait and make any preparations you need before continuing.

Care for an extra save, especially if you want to romance Tali. There is a bug that causes Tali not to be romanced after the IFF and Legion’s Loyalty Mission.

IFF Mission game’s unofficial Point-of-No-Return, especially if you want everyone to get out of the Suicide Mission alive. During this mission you will also meet your final (potential) squadmate. You’ll be fighting a lot of husks during this mission.

You’ll get to decide what to do with Legion. You can sell it to Cerberus for some credits or you can activate it and recruit it. If you recruit it be sure to immediately talk to it again to unlock its Loyalty Mission. If Legion doesn’t give it to you move to another deck and come back. Do not access the galaxy map until you get the mission.

Legion’s Loyalty Mission

Complete this mission to secure Legion’s loyalty. This mission’s final decision will have a big impact on ME3.

After the mission is complete Tali and Legion will get into a fight. You MUST use Charm/Intimidate here to end the fight. Failure to do so will have a negative impact on ME3.

Access the galaxy map and the next mission will automatically start. For this mission you’ll be controlling Joker. Follow’s EDI’s directions and move quickly and carefully.

Once the mission is finished and you are in control of Shepard again head immediately for the Omega-4 Relay. It is time to begin the Suicide Mission.

The Suicide Mission

Once you reach the Collector Base you’ll need to make several decisions which will influence who may or may not survive the Suicide Mission.

Whenever Shepard’s squad splits into two teams always pick either Miranda, Jacob or Garrus to lead the other team.

When choosing a tech expert pick either Tali, Legion or Kasumi.

When choosing the Escort pick Mordin (otherwise he will die even when he is loyal)

When choosing a biotic expert pick Samara/Morinth or Jack.

When it is time to pick your final squad to take with you to the final battle choose from Miranda, Tali, Jack or Kasumi. I always pick Miranda and Tali. NEVER take Grunt, Zaeed or Garrus. Leaving these three behind to help hold the line greatly increases the odds of everyone else surviving.

As a reminder, whoever you pick for a task must be loyal to do it successfully. This lineup has never failed me.

The final decision for this mission has an impact on ME3.

Lair of the Shadow Broker (DLC)

Head to Illium and speak to Liara to start this mission. Liara will join your squad for the second half of this mission. Remember to allocate her power points when you get her. This DLC has a much greater impact if you romanced Liara in ME1. Be sure to invite Liara up to your cabin after the mission is complete.

Completing this DLC has an impact on ME3 and unlocks some useful resources and interesting/amusing info in ME2. I prefer to complete this mission after the Suicide Mission because I think it helps sets the stage for ME3.

Arrival (DLC)

This mission becomes available after Horizon if you have the DLC downloaded and installed. Admiral Hackett will contact you with this mission. For most of this mission Shepard will be fighting alone so prepare yourself.

This DLC sets the stage perfectly for ME3. This mission should be the absolute last thing you do before moving on to ME3. What I like to do is download this DLC and keep it on a flash drive. I only plug it in when I am ready to do the mission. That way I can get Hackett’s message and complete the mission all in one go. It feels awkward to get this mission and let it sit for so long given its nature.

That should be everything. Happy gaming!

Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition

Walkthrough assignments, fba couplings ¶.

You can start this assignment side-task by speaking with Engineer Donnelly down on the Engineering deck of the Normandy. Ask if he requires anything else and he’ll request some new FBA Couplings.

To find these, travel to Omega and make your way to the shop - Kenn’s Salvage. Here you can purchase the required parts. Do so and return them to the engineers aboard the Normandy. They will be thrilled and ask you to participate in a card game with them which you can do or not do at your discretion.

After handing in the FBA couplings, the task will be complete.

Serrice Ice Brandy ¶

This assignment starts by talking with Dr Chakwas in the Medical Bay on the crew deck of the Normandy. Speak with her and she’ll tell you she regrets losing a bottle of brandy. Tell her that you’ll keep an eye out for one to begin the mission.

To find the Serrice Ice Brandy, you need to travel to the Krogan world of Tuchanka. Visit Ratch’s Wares and you will be able to buy the liquor from the shop. Once you have obtained it, return the bottle to Dr Chakwas aboard the Normady for an amusing scene that will complete the task.

Special Ingredients ¶

This assignment starts by talking with Mess Sergeant Gardner who is located in the kitchen area on the Crew Quarters deck of the Normandy. Speak with him and he’ll tell you that the food he makes is not as good as he would like and that if he had better supplies, the crew would be better fed. Tell him you’ll look into it.

To find some better food, you need to travel to the Citadel. Visit the Zakera Cafe and from the terminal here you will be able to buy the item ’ High Grade Provisions ’. Once you have obtained it, return to the Normandy and hand them over to Gardner to complete the mission.

(Use Ctrl+F and search for a specific character/quest/subject for quick reference.)

OBVIOUS SPOILERS FOLLOW.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

-
If Doctor Michel is assisted during her ME1 quest and sends an email to Shepard during the events of ME2, she can be recruited as the Normandy's on-board doctor in ME3. This allows for Shepard to have Chakwas stay in the lab and therefor gain war assets.
-
If Shepard convinces Chellick to remove Jenna from the C-Sec undercover operation, she will return in ME3 to save Conrad Verner's life by sabotaging the Cerberus agent. If not, Conrad Verner is shot and dies.
-
See ME2 quest description below.
-
If Shepard purchases a license for Elkoss Combine (from Expat (Volus, Wards), Delan (Hanar, Presidium), or Opold (Hanar, Noveria)), it will play a role during Conrad Verner's quest in ME3.
-
If Shepard agrees to find and then returns the data Hossle, a scientist working on Feros, requests, Conrad Verner will contact him and use the information for use on the Crucible.
-
Not actually in the journal. However, if Shepard helps them, they will appear in the Sirta shop on the Citadel in ME2 and then nearby the Apollo Cafe on the Presidium Commons in ME3. Talking to them gains a slight Reputation boost (+5). If they are not interacted with in ME1, they will still appear in ME3, but as "Arguing Couple" and only give +2 towards Reputation.
-
ME1 DLC. If the Batarian terrorist is allowed to escape, he will return in ME3 during the batarian code quest involving Officer Noles. Shepard can either kill him or convince him to fight against the Reapers with the allied species. The latter results in gaining war assets. (If Balak is "killed" he will appear in ME3 anyway. His dialogue should change a bit to reflect this. Not a bug. Need confirmation on whether or not it is more difficult to convince him to ally his fleets with the rest of the galaxy and/or the amount of war assets gained in comparison to letting him escape. If this DLC is not completed, ME3 assumes Shepard let him escape.)
-
See ME2 description below.
-
Bit of extra dialogue if Shepard helps Wrex recover his ancestral armor. Occurs only if Shepard sabotages the genophage cure and Wrex confronts him/her.
-
Regardless of your choices in the conversation, the 63rd Scout Flotilla assists in the final battle for Earth. Gain war assets. However, if Shepard saves the Council at the end of ME1, his fleet sustains heavy losses, which is reflected. Mikhailovich himself is not counted among war assets (+25) if the Council is saved.
-
It is revealed in ME3 that the rogue VI at the Alliance's moon base was used to help create EDI. Bit of different dialogue on the Cerberus Base mission if this was/was not completed.
-
See ME2 quest description below.

-
If Kirrahe survives the assault on Saren's base on Virmire, he will return in ME3 and offer his support for Earth. Gain war assets. If Thane dies during the ME2 suicide mission, Kirrahe will sacrifice himself to save the Salarian councilor during Priority: Citadel.
-
If Shepard finishes his/her collection of ancient Asari Matriarch writings in ME1, they will contribute to Conrad Verner's quest in ME3.
-
The asari scientist studying indoctrination at Saren's base on Virmire. If she is allowed to live, there will be an email at Shepard's terminal that reports she apparently murdered several politicians.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition to (if not completed, unloyal squadmates will die during their ME3 quests):

-
If Conrad's quest is completed in ME2, he will appear at the Citadel's holding docks in ME3 and will be recruiting for Cerberus. Conrad will reveal to Shepard that he has a doctoate in xenoscience and will contribute to the building of the Crucible. Gavin Hossle's data, matriarch writings, and an Elkoss Combine license (all from ME1) will play a role in the quest. Each of those ME1 sidequests listed will only grant 1 war asset each, but the dialogue is worth it for the lulz. If Jenna (the undercover waitress at Chora's Den) is not assisted in ME1, Conrad will be shot in Shepard's place and will die. Only a maximum of 5 WA are gained.
-
If Shepard agrees to have a drink with Chakwas in ME2 and then recruits her as the Normandy's on-board doctor in ME3, Chakwas will ask if Shepard would like to have another sometime during the course of ME3.
-
If Shepard has dinner with Kelly and she assumes the role of feeding his/her fish, they will transfer over to ME3 when Shepard talks to Kelly at the holding docks. The Prejek Paddle Fish will unlock a gift from Liara.
-
ME2 DLC. There will be twenty or so names on the Normandy's Memorial Wall. It is assumed these are the same crewmen who died during the Collector surprise attack and whose dogtags were recovered. (If this DLC is not purchased and completed, ME3 will assume that it has been.)
-
If the asari shopkeeper on Illium, Ereba, is convinced to pursue a relationship (or not) with Charr the poetic Krogan, Shepard can then find a datapad during Grunt's rachni mission. The datapad can be returned to Ereba.
-
The improved armor, shielding, and cannon that can be researched from the terminal in ME2 carry over to ME3. The medi-bay scarring upgrade does as well.
-
Regardless of prior actions (ie. punching her in the face lol), Shepard can either: attempt to punch her again (which she dodges) or convince her to "keep asking the tough questions". War assets result from the latter (10 WA). If al-Jilani dodges the Commander's first punch and the player doesn't follow up with a headbutt, she will sock the Commander back. If Shepard has punched her in both ME1 and ME2, but uses the Paragon interrupt in ME3, she will only contribute +5 WA.

-
The amount of minerals Shepard has on the imported ME2 save contribute to the war effort as they are seized by the Alliance when the Normandy is grounded. The exact number of war assets gained is determined by whether Shepard has a "high/medium/low" amount of resources (100, 25, 10, respectively). Unknown what the specifics are currently, but most sources claim this relies heavily on how much platinum the player has. Over 250K resources with 15% or more of that total being platinum results in the full 100 WA bonus.
-
If Shiala is left alive during the events of ME1 and Shepard assists her and the colony with the medical contract during ME2, Shepard will gain war assets for ME3. 30 WA.
-
If Shepard talks to Aethyta, the asari bartender, on Illium, she will reappear at the Apollo Cafe on the Presidium Commons and can be interacted with prior to the Priority: Citadel mission. Also see the bit on LotSB below. Slight dialogue changes depending on whether or not LotSB is completed.
-
ME2 DLC. If David is rescued from the facility, he will reappear at Grissom Academy in ME3 and vouch for Shepard. He will also unlock a weapon storage room for the Commander (inside is a weapon mod and another Mattock). During Jacob's ME3 quest, Gavin Archer will thank Shepard for saving David twice. If the renegade path is chosen, Gavin will explain that David eventually died, but that he was able to determine more useful data from the project (resulting in more war assets). Either way, Gavin will contribute to the war effort and Shepard gains war assets. (If Shepard does not save David from the Academy, it is presumed Gavin commits suicide during Jacob's ME3 mission, therefore no assets are gained). Gavin Archer is worth 25 WA.
-
If completed, just a little easter egg-like conversation between Vega and Cortez debating the pros and cons of the Mako/Hammerhead. Can also be gained through completion of Overlord.
-
ME2 DLC. If LotSB is completed, Feron will survive. If it is not, he dies and Liara takes down the Broker on her own. Her dialogue also changes slightly to reflect this. Also, if LotSB is completed, ME3 will assume Shepard watched the video of Aethyta looking at a photo of Liara.
-
ME2. Regardless of whether or not Shepard had Kasumi destroy the greybox, she will uncover the incriminating data. She and Zaeed are both counted as war assets when their ME3 missions are completed, 25 WA each.
-
ME2 DLC. If Arrival is not completed by the player, ME3 presumes the events happened, but that the relay was destroyed by some of the Alliance Fleet, resulting in lost war assets (-50). Also slight dialogue changes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to MikeLeit89, Gigafreak gf, Dunncor, master_gamr1231, jamesz71kyle, and njorls for contributing additional information.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

There you have it. If a particular quest from ME1 or ME2 is not listed here, then it is not flagged for transfer to ME3, meaning that it does not affect dialogue, war assets, or anything. (Though this may change with additional DLC, of course.)

If I missed anything, let me know and I'll edit this to reflect the changes before my hour-long editing window closes.

: (Last version, I swear, apologies. Had to add a couple things, update more specifics, fix a few of the quests... and the last thread got archived due to inactivity. Whoops.)

Which assignments in Mass Effect 1 are worth doing?

So I got the legendary edition, I’ve been playing for about 20 hours now and realized that a lot of the assignments seem to just be filler missions without actually adding much to the story or having a story of their own. I don’t care so much for the gear upgrades, but I’m looking for assignments which have a good story. Try to avoid spoilers and just say the name of the assignment, thanks for any help!

  2. Honestly, is it worth it to do all of the assignments?

They are all worth it, no matter how you put it. Because all of them will have some impact in the following episodes. But even without that, if you are considering importing your caracther later into the next episode, you want it to be as high level as possible, and with as much money as possible.

Other than that, after the suicide mission you will be placed back in your ship and have the chance to explore and do whatever you want. I will say though, if your buying fish, you need to feed them after every mission, which includes assignments that you pick up from scanning planets. Vocation:Mage. "Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer." Pretty sure all you get is experience and credits.
