Finance Project Topics and Ideas

Review your interests

While considering a topic, ensure that it aligns with your interests, as it is a time-consuming and intensive task that demands attention and commitment. You will find your time investment more productive, enjoyable and engaging.

Information Availability

Avoid working on a topic without access to or availability of adequate information or data. You must have checked the availability of the required data that are crucial for your project, be it reports, industry resources, public databases, financial data of government agencies or companies, etc.

Be mindful of the expertise of your project guide/Faculty

You cannot choose and work on a topic that falls outside the purview or areas beyond your guide's expertise. To ensure you get maximum insights, guidance, and feedback, ensure that your topic is within the expertise of your professor.

Consider the scope of the project

Choose a topic that you can complete within the given timeframe. Think thoroughly through the workload and feasibility of the project activities and ensure they can be carried out successfully.

Industry relevance

Angel City Football Club: A New Business Model for Women’s Sports

Angel City Football Club (ACFC) was founded in 2020 by venture capitalist Kara Nortman, entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, and actor and activist Natalie Portman. As outsiders to professional sports, the all-female founding team had rewritten the playbook for how to build a sports franchise by applying lessons from the tech and entertainment industries. Unlike typical sports franchises that built their teams and track records over many years before extending their brand beyond a local base, ACFC had inverted the model, generating both global and local interest in the club during its first three years. The club’s early success was reflected in its market valuation of $250 million as of its sale in July 2024 — the highest in the National Women’s Soccer League. Equally important, ACFC had started to bend the curve toward greater pay equity in women’s sports — the club’s ultimate goal. But the founders knew there was much more to do to capitalize on the club’s momentum. As they developed ACFC’s first three-year strategic plan in 2024, they weighed the most effective ways to build value for the franchise. Was it better to allocate the incremental budget to investments in digital brand building or to investments in the on-field product? Senior Lecturer Jeffrey Rayport is joined by case co-author Nicole Keller and club co-founder Kara Nortman to discuss the case, “Angel City Football Club: Scoring a New Model.”

The Opioid Crisis, CEO Pay, and Shareholder Activism

In 2020, AmerisourceBergen Corporation, a Fortune 50 company in the drug distribution industry, agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits filed nationwide against the company for its opioid distribution practices, which critics alleged had contributed to the opioid crisis in the US. The $6.6 billion global settlement caused a net loss larger than the cumulative net income earned during the tenure of the company’s CEO, which began in 2011. In addition, AmerisourceBergen’s legal and financial troubles were accompanied by shareholder demands aimed at driving corporate governance changes in companies in the opioid supply chain. Determined to hold the company’s leadership accountable, the shareholders launched a campaign in early 2021 to reject the pay packages of executives. Should the board reduce the executives’ pay, as of means of improving accountability? Or does punishing the AmerisourceBergen executives for paying the settlement ignore the larger issue of a business’s responsibility to society? Harvard Business School professor Suraj Srinivasan discusses executive compensation and shareholder activism in the context of the US opioid crisis in his case, “The Opioid Settlement and Controversy Over CEO Pay at AmerisourceBergen.”

5 Research Topics for an MBA in Finance Project

Research projects for those pursuing an mba in finance, risk assessment in business, impact of interest rates on the stock market, empowering women through microfinance, determinants of corporate dividend payouts, impacts of corporate social responsibility on the firm’s profitability.

Every student pursuing an MBA in Finance degree will research, compile, and write a final research project. The project should reflect the area of finance in which the student is interested. Nothing drives a student toward a successful career like a passion for the area in which they choose to participate. These five proposed topics are viable projects that, when correctly presented, will satisfy any faculty board reviewing the paper.

A risk assessment project is a safe bet for any MBA in Finance student. The project has no limitations as to the makeup of the corporate example. Some students create a business in virtual reality that faces a real business scenario. Others use information or scenarios available in their current or former work environment. Regardless of where the information comes from, the paper must address the perceived weaknesses of the business in the market. It must allot resources to combat those weaknesses. Areas that must be covered in the risk assessment include:

  • market risk
  • insurance risk
  • strategic risk
  • operational risk

Researching the impact of interest rates on the stock market is an excellent topic for MBA in Finance graduates entering the stock market as:

  • corporate officials

A research paper delving into the mysteries of the connection between interest rates and stock market fluctuations involves some of the most bizarre aspects of:

  • economic growth

A complete analysis of this relationship involves an explanation of stock market jitters. It will include business outlook and a comparison of market conditions during low, medium, and high-interest rate calibrations. Any prospective stock market employer will be interested in a student’s analysis in this field.

The student who wishes to take on the world with a controversial subject can venture into the area of microfinance and its effect on:

  • communities
  • the world in general

Organizations like FINCA , that specialize in microfinance, provide a good start for MBA students looking to make changes in the world business environment. Such a topic would begin with a definition of microfinance and work into the need for its implementation around the world. An analytical study on a subject like this delves into the financial benefits of investing in the bottom layer of the economic world. This project can ignite a smoldering passion about the state of poverty.

Many factors go into a paper along these lines, including:

  • Market forces
  • stockholder expectations
  • risk management
  • product costs

As shown in the International Journal of Financial Studies , this project involves multiple layers of study that embrace nearly every factor that affects business. A student taking on this subject walks the edge of a pitfall. Dividend determinants affect much more than the business. Stockholders demand an explanation of the factors involved and the business demands enough income to continue to grow.

Researching a paper on the impacts of corporate social responsibility in the firm’s profitability is the most difficult subject any MBA student will tackle. The question of business ethics involves an incredible number of intangibles—abstract concepts that are judgment calls. Putting together a paper on this subject involves the definition of those abstract concepts and the implementation of them in the real world. Following the implementation of abstract ideas into the business world to discover the financial impact they create is a walk along a winding road. It leads to difficult decision making on paper and in reality.

A student pursuing an MBA in Finance degree must complete a research project that demonstrates their proficiency in every section of the curriculum. Any of these subjects will fill that requirement if researched and appropriately written.

Quantitative Finance Portfolio Projects

Great portfolio projects for aspiring quants to showcase their skillset to employers..

Given the competitive nature of finding jobs in quantitative finance, many students fall under the false pretense that having an ivy league degree , being a math olympiad, or having some outstanding technical ability is the only way to break into the industry. Suffice it to say that this notion is very far from the truth. In fact, one often underappreciated trait that quant employers look for is one's curiosity, demonstrated passion, and work ethic. It turns out that side projects are one of the best ways to highlight these attributes. Not only do candidates who have completed side projects tend to pass more resume screens , but they also tend to have more fruitful results in the interview process.

Whether you are seeking to pursue a career in quantitative trading, quantitative research, or quantitative development, working on side projects can significantly accelerate your probability of breaking into one of these fields. In this article, we'll cover a handful of tactical quantitative finance projects you can implement to create a portfolio you can later showcase to quant employers. Furthermore, we'll share what modern technologies and tools you can leverage in these projects in order to stand out from the herd.

Project #1 - Building a Trading Engine from Scratch

Quantitative Developers are responsible for building and managing a firm's trading systems. These systems take in as input market data and produce outputs which are orders. While implementing a full-functioning, robust trading system would be quite challenging, implementing a toy example would be a reasonable task. In this project, you would build a trading client that makes transaction requests and a server that receives these requests and processes them. You can find a tutorial example of this project here .

Project #2 - Machine Learning Visualization Project

Quantitative Researchers often leverage machine learning to build trading algorithms. While modern machine learning has been reduced to simple APIs like sklearn and TensorFlow, there is still a great deal of importance in understanding how these algorithms actually work. For this project, you can build a tool that visualizes a concept in machine learning. A good example of such a project is the K-Means clustering visualizer .

Project #3 - Developing a Data-Driven Investment Thesis

As a quantitative researcher, you will be exploring and developing strategies that the firm can use to make profitable financial transactions. Some of these transactions will be short-term, while others will be long-term. For this project, you can try and investigate an investment strategy by leveraging data from OpenBB. OpenBB is an investment research platform that provides free crypto, forex, futures, stocks, etc. data all from a Python API. If you are looking for some inspiration for investment strategies you can find some on this page .

Project #4 - Option Pricing Model

Options pricing models are commonly leveraged by quantitative traders and researchers to calculate the theoretical value of an option. Understanding the theoretical value of an option can allow investors to adjust their trading strategies in a way that aligns with the set of options that would reap the most profits. Since there isn't a single definitive way to calculate the theoretical value of an option, many different techniques have arisen. For this project, you can implement one of these pricing models using the programming language of your choice. Three potential pricing models include:

1/ Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo pricing relies on the statistical property known as the Law of Large Numbers. In Monte Carlo pricing, numerous random walks for the price of an underlying asset are generated, whereby each has its own associated payoff. These payoffs are averaged and discounted to today, ultimately revealing the price of the option.

2/ Binomial

The Binomial pricing model is a method for evaluating an option by using the varying price as a function of time for the financial instrument.

3/ Black Scholes

The Black Scholes is one of the most famous methods for calculating the value of an option and uses the strike price, current stock price, time to expiration, risk-free rate, and volatility to arrive at the valuation.

Project #5 - Implement a Trading Strategy and Perform Backtesting

If you're looking for a quantitative trader job , working on a project like this would be perfect. Quantitative traders are responsible for executing trades that will reap profits for the firm, so demonstrating that you've already implemented and seen success in your trading strategies will be appreciated by quant employers. Furthermore, backtesting this strategy shows that you understand a systematic process for evaluating your techniques and hypotheses. This entire project can be implemented in any programming language of your choice, but Python tends to have many libraries that will make the task slightly less arduous. Some good examples of trading strategies that you can try include:

1/ Dual Class Arbitrage

A trading strategy that involves taking advantage of the price discrepency that exists between stocks that have dual listings. (Ex: GOOG vs GOOGL)

2/ Bollinger Band Strategy

Bollinger bands are calculated by taking the 20-day simple moving average (SMA) of a stock price and then calculating the upper and lower bounds as the SMA +- two standard deviations of the actual stock price.

3/ Reinforcement Learning Algorithm

Reinforcement learning is a blossoming field in machine learning and has been leveraged in a variety of applications for algo trading. Building your own algorithm to trade a particular financial product could make for an impressive portfolio project.

4/ Sector-Based Pairs Trading Algorithm

The premise of this trading algorithm is that two assets within the same sector/industry will likely have similar performances and therefore any observed significant deviations in the prices of these assets can be capitalized on in the form of buying the falling asset or shorting the rising asset.
