Students have access to all sorts of digital presentation tools, from legacy slide-based tools like PowerPoint to truly inventive and experimental new formats that incorporate live and prerecorded video and audio. The rise in virtual, hybrid, and flipped classrooms has made the need for education-focused online presentation tools for students all the greater.

Importance of students learning to use a range of presentation tech tools 🎬

Before we get into this list, it’s fair to ask: Is it really all that important for students to get comfortable using technology-based presentation tools? 🤔

We believe the answer is an emphatic “Yes!”

The modern world we live in already depends on all sorts of tech and that dependence will only increase. Today’s students are tomorrow’s adults, and it’s vital they develop media literacy skills now. This is behind the push for digital citizenship , or teaching children to use tech safely and responsibly so they can effectively participate in society in the future.  

Many students are already comfortable navigating smartphone apps, video games, smart TVs, and social media. But throw a PowerPoint or other business tool in front of them, and it’s another story. They aren’t technology averse. But neither are they automatically comfortable with all the different software and user interfaces that they’ll encounter in the professional and business world.

As the world grows more technologically complex 🤖, the professionals of tomorrow need exposure today to the language of technology. 

By engaging with a range of presentation tools — along with edtech tools like Google Classroom and other LMS platforms — students gain a more well-rounded understanding of how to interact with productivity-oriented tech. 1. Screencastify Submit

Screencastify Submit does many things. It allows teachers to create presentation assignments for students. It also allows students to easily record and submit these short video assignments on any device. It’s a great way to practice giving live presentations without the pressure of an audience, plus it helps students gain skills with talking and presenting on camera. 🎥

Another advantage for students: Students can practice their presentation skills and wait to submit until they’ve recorded their favorite take. 

Screencastify Submit is simple because it’s designed to be a secure, closed system between teachers and students. However, the broader Screencastify suite — one of the top Google Chrome extensions for educators and students — has plenty of integrations with popular LMSes and edtech platforms. 

2. PowerPoint and Google Slides

Two of the classic slide-building apps, PowerPoint and Google Slides feel very traditional compared to many of the other tools listed here. Still, both apps are easy introductions to the concept of creating basic 2D designs and visually appealing presentations. PowerPoint Presentations and Google Slides allow students to create slideshow content with transitions, animations, multiple slide layouts, and more.

These presentation software solutions help students prioritize the information that’s most useful to their audience and hone the ability to present that material in a visually engaging way. They can also be used in conjunction with screencasting or screen sharing to present in a more live or interactive manner.

These apps are both widespread and integrate seamlessly with a variety of tools. For Apple users, Keynote is another option in this same style, but it’s limited to only macOS and iOS, making it less widely adopted.

Note that Google Slides is free for everyone with a Gmail account, but PowerPoint requires an individual subscription or a school-wide license.

3. Prezi Next

The original Prezi was like a cooler, snappier version of PowerPoint. It did away with the feeling that every slide was a static rectangular image and let users create presentations that felt more like unique little worlds 🌍  than like conference room snooze-fests 😴 .

Unfortunately, it was built on Adobe Flash, which is dead and gone .

Prezi Next is the new generation of Prezi, built fresh in HTML5. It keeps the feel of the original and enables students to produce creative, imaginative presentations full of both whimsy and functionality. Templates in Prezi Next allow students to be creative, detailed, and look great in the process.

Prezi also integrates with major video conferencing apps like Google Meet and Zoom, allowing students to present their Prezi live. 

4. Haiku Deck

Haiku Deck is another slide-based presentation app. It’s entirely cloud-based, meaning you can access Haiku Deck from the web. The big differentiator with Haiku Deck is its automated image search. The app intelligently analyzes the text that your students add to their slides, then it suggests photos and slide designs that make sense for that text.

Haiku Deck gives users access to over 40 million royalty-free images (meaning no more watermarks or pixelated backgrounds) and includes dozens of themes designed by pros, complete with complementary fonts picked out for each one.

Haiku Deck is mostly a standalone tool. So, while you don’t get deep integrations with other tools, you might not really need them.

5. Pear Deck

Before they ever explain what Pear Deck is, the team behind Pear Deck points to research showing that learning has both social, emotional and academic components and goes into great detail about the research-backed instructional strategies that the platform supports.

So, this tool comes from a team that’s dedicated to improving educational outcomes for all kinds of learners. But what does it do, exactly?

Essentially, Pear Deck operates as an add-on to Google Slides or PowerPoint and allows you to turn those static presentation tools into dynamic, interactive educational experiences. You can embed quizzes, tutorials, and other interactive content and see student responses in real time.

Although it’s aimed at teachers, it can be used by students to enhance their own presentations with engaging content like Q&A or audio and video, and gives them more creative freedom. 

Sutori is a tool that’s purpose built to help students create timelines and roadmaps and tell stories. It’s simple and streamlined, making it easy for students of all ages to use. Students can even embed media on their Sutori timelines, and Sutori is easy to use online and via remote learning.

Sutori’s timeline focus makes it perfect for social studies or history and any other linear, time-based lessons. The company also lists use cases for English, Language, Arts, and STEM teachers. It’s a great tool for fostering multimedia collaboration, critical thinking (via both primary and secondary sources), and research skills.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words 📸, and if that’s true, how much more is an infographic worth? A lot, when it comes to the classroom. Infographics are great storytelling tools, not to mention visual aids. The trouble is that making great infographics from scratch have required graphic design skills🧑‍💻  — until tools like Easelly.

Making a great presentation isn’t just about slides and bullet points. A wide variety of fun and easy-to-use tools can help students and teachers make presentations. In addition to longtime favorites like PowerPoint and Google Slides, there are many more tools that can make your presentations pop. If you are looking for student-friendly websites to make presentations, I have a handful of favorites to share with you.

In this blog post, you’ll find thirteen student-friendly websites to make presentations. These are perfect for different subject areas, and you might find that a few are a better fit for elementary students and others are a better choice for secondary students.

Websites to Make Presentations

Google Slides

Google Slides is a super popular and free tool within Google Drive. Students can collaborate in real time and easily share presentations. They can make a wide range of presentations and even use Google Slides to create comic strips to present information.

Prezi 

You might first think about Prezi as the tool with its zooming user interface. But they have many resources for students to create dynamic and visually engaging presentations. You can also find lots of templates on this page for students and this page for educators.

Microsoft PowerPoint Online

Microsoft’s classic presentation tool, PowerPoint, has an online version that is free to use with a Microsoft account. I spent a lot of time in PPT growing up, and it’s still a tool used in the workplace throughout different industries.

Canva is often thought of first as a graphic design tool. But it also has an excellent presentation builder with many templates to choose from. Canva for Education is free and has lots of supporting resources for students and teachers.

Visme is an excellent tool for creating presentations, infographics, and other visual content. They have a special version for education that students can use to create a variety of presentations.

Apple Clips

Do you use iPads with Students? Then you’ll want to check out Apple Clips . It’s a fantastic movie-making tool that focuses on short-form creations. This isn’t technically a website (but an iOS app ), and it’s a great choice for a quick video presentation.

Emaze is an online presentation software with a range of templates allowing automatic presentation translation. Their website says that the Education version is “Coming Soon,” so you may want to bookmark this and check back in later this year.

Perfect for students who want to create animated video presentations, Powtoon lets students create presentations for any subject matter. It’s a great alternative to traditional slides, and you can find both teacher and student examples on their site.

Genially 

Genially is a versatile tool that allows you to create slideshow presentations, infographics, video presentations, and more. You might remember seeing it on my list of websites to make timelines that I shared earlier this year.

Adobe Express 

I’m a big fan of Adobe Express , and you might have checked out one of my posts featuring their creativity challenges . It’s a fantastic tool for students who want to incorporate storytelling in their presentations. You can combine text, images, and voice to create videos or build a webpage to present information.

Piktochart also helps teachers and students create visually engaging presentations. Students can use this tool to create the primary visual for a presentation or graphics they might add to a traditional slide deck.

Padlet  

If you’ve joined me for a workshop this year, you’ve probably tried out Padlet alongside me. It’s an excellent tool for organizing information, and Padlet can be used creatively for presentations. You can add images, links, videos, and more, and I love the different ways to organize information.

Beautiful.AI  

Students in higher education might want to try out this AI-powered presentation tool . It automatically applies design best practices to your slides, and you can sign up here for a free EDU account.

Presentations usually give a deeper insight to what the topic is. It’s not surprising that a short outline with a picture gives a better understanding of the topic. Over many years the best formula for creating presentations remains unchanged: visuality + original content. Being a true follower of Canvas and Unplag, I cannot but say about the high quality of these tools. With them, I improved my time-managing skills and also upgraded my creative mind. Canva is on the top of all the tools for creating beautiful design: colours, prints, patterns – everything is captivating. What I do about Unplag is its speed and accuracy. In a second it identifies academic lapses such as wrong formatted citations or references. It’s more than cool.

First off I want to say superb blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your head prior to writing. I’ve had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out. I do enjoy writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. They also empower you with a wide variety of helpful features including collaborative ones enabling you to invite team members and work collaboratively on the same presentation.  

While some of the featured presentation tools below provide interactive features, there is always the possibility to make your presentations super interactive using tools that are designed specifically for that purpose.

I have already reviewed some of  engagement-promoting applications that teachers and educators can implement to turn their presentations into lively dialogic hubs using live polls, Q&A, questionnaires, word clouds, and quizzes. These engagement tools are perfect to integrate with the presentations tools below.

1. Google Slides

Google Slides is another good presentation tool I recommend for teachers and educators. It  offers a wide variety of powerful features, all for free. Besides the basic things that you can do on any editor (e.g., insert images, add text and shapes, change colour, etc), Google Slides also offers collaborative features that enable team members to collaborate on the same presentation in real time.

Collaborators can insert comments and chat with those who are viewing the presentation. As the owner of the presentation, you can always keep track of changes made to the presentation and at any time reverse to earlier versions. 

Presentations you create via Google Slides can be downloaded in different formats including Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe PDF. They can also be emailed, published online as a webpage or be embedded in a website or blog. When you share your presentation with others you get to control what they can do (e.g., editor, commenter, or viewer). 

3- Flipsnack

Flipsnack is an interactive presentation maker that allows users to create and share animated presentations with a realistic 3D page flip effect. This software allows you to either create from scratch your presentation or you can simply pick one of the fully-customizable templates available in the built-in library and adjust it to your own taste and needs.

In terms of customization, Flipsnack comes equipped with a large variety of interactive elements, such as photo-slideshows; GIFs; audio and video elements; social media buttons, and map embedding.

Flipsnack also offers multiple download options, so you can download your presentation as HTML5; web PDF; PDF for print; GIF; PNG; JPEG, and MP4, or just share it online with your target audience. Check out Flipsnack’ s teacher review to learn more about this platform.

4. Haiku Deck

Haiku Deck is another powerful presentation making tool for teachers. It works on the web, iPad, and iPhone. Some of the interesting features it offers include over 40 million  free Creative Commons licensed images to use in your slides together with the ability to upload and add your own images, access to a huge collection of layouts and fonts, tons of professionally designed templates to choose from, seamless and real time syncing between the web and mobile apps, and many more.

Another interesting functionality provided by Haiku Deck is the ability to use your phone as a teleprompter allowing you to turn it to a remote in presentation mode. When it comes to sharing your Haiku Deck presentations you have various options to choose from including the ability to share decks through email, on social media, present decks on a projector, embed or export decks to PowerPoint or Keynote, download as PDF, and more.

Haiku Deck has a special version for the education community called Haiku Deck Classroom. Teachers use it to help students create  engaging presentations and showcase their learning.

Some of the features it provides includes advanced privacy settings for the class, YouTube embeds, presentation audio, save to video, broadcast presentations to the entire class, and many more. Haiku Deck Classroom costs $99/year for a single teacher and 150 students.

Visme is another good presentation tool to consider. It offers a number of key features including real-time collaboration, beautiful pre-designed templates and pitch decks, tons of free stock images and icons, interactive maps, over 50 charts and graphs, mind maps, and many more.

You can either start creating your presentation from Scratch or choose from the collections of ready-made templates. Customize the presentation to your own needs and when you are done present and share with others. 

Using Visme’s Presenter Studio, you can easily record your screen (audio and video or audio only) and share it asynchronously with others. Other interesting features provided include the ability to import and export Microsoft PowerPoint as editable presentations, access to 125 fonts, create processes and workflows using tables and diagrams, create your own library of icons and PDFs for future presentations, and more.

6. Piktochart

Piktochart is probably one of the best alternatives to Canva and Visme. It is ideal for creating different types of visual content including presentations, posters, infographics, flyers, videos, and many more. The templates library features a huge selection of customizable presentation templates including a section specifically for education. 

Piktochart also offers real-time collaborative features allowing users to co-create presentations. Other interesting features provided by Piktochart include the ability to upload your fonts, design custom colour palette, access stock photos or upload your own, add interactive maps to your presentations, present online or download your presentation in .ppt or PDF format, and many more. 

7. Online whiteboard tools

While they are not presentation tools in the conventional sense of the word, online whiteboarding tools can also be used for creating and sharing presentations. They are especially ideal for teamwork collaboration.

They enable you to work together, brainstorm ideas, organize throughs and communicate complex data in visually engaging formats. Some of my favourite online whiteboards include Google Jamboard, Lucidspark, and Conceptboard. 8-  Canva Presentation

Canva, the popular design platform, is one of my favourite presentation tools out there. The site features a huge library of beautifully designed templates and offers tons of features and multiple presentation modes.

Here is how to make a presentation on Canva: head over to Canva and type ‘Presentation’ in the search box. Browse through the pre-made presentation templates. You can filter your search by theme and style. 

The Education section embeds a wide range of awesome templates created specifically for the education community. Once you find the template you are interested in, click to open  it in Canva editor where you can start editing it the way you like.

You can add photos, GIFs, insert videos and music, add shapes and fonts,  etc. Use animations to add a creative effect to your slides. Once your presentation is ready you can choose among various presentation modes.

“Choose from standard presentation, presenter mode, video recording. Or, on bad hair days, choose an audio-only video presentation mode. Save your slides as a PDF for handouts, export them as PowerPoint .pptx files, or turn them into an interactive website!”

Canva also offers collaborative features that allow you to invite your team members to help with the creation of your presentation. “To create a team, simply choose those who you would like to collaborate with and once the invitation is accepted you can instantly start creating your presentation together. Play with illustrations, colours, leave comments, and resolve suggestions all within the Canva editor. Teamwork is made easier with Canva’s presentation tool”.

18 Creative Options for Students to Demonstrate Learning (Other Than Google Slides)

When consulting with schools on their blended learning programs I’m looking at a variety of ways that technology can be used effectively for learning. This means looking at assessments, independent work, group work, pedagogical practices and more. One of my primary beliefs is that students should drive their own learning. They should be demonstrating (using whatever tool necessary) that they understand a concept they have learned.

Generally, this involves students making a presentation using Google Slides or similar tool to present their understanding. That’s a great first building block of student creativity, but sometimes it ends there. Students go from class to class knowing that the main expectation is to create a slideshow around something. There are so many other ways for students to demonstrate their learning if we just give them the choice. I though I might list a few that I’ve shared over the years with teachers looking for alternative creativity tools other than Google Slides. Most of these are free with a paid component to unlock further features.

Book Creator

One of my go to tools for the last decade or so is Book Creator ( https://bookcreator.com ). It’s great on any device and really is a blank canvas. History teachers can use it as a way for students to retell history in a graphic novel format. Math teachers can have students write their own story problems and then have other students solve them. Just today, the team at Book Creator released several new features including a way to give comments/feedback in multiple mediums (audio, gif, video, etc).

Speaking of reflection and feedback, the digital portfolio tool known as bulb ( https://bulbapp.com ) is a great way to capture creative and longitudinal growth. There are both app and web-based versions of the platform and students get up to 10 “collections” for free to capture their learning process. The great thing about this particular portfolio tool is that the students can take it with them when they leave our K12 institution!

If you are looking for a quick way for students to sketch out some ideas on a digital whiteboard, look no further than Autodraw.com . Choose from one of three canvas types and then let the kids create! Drawing on a mousepad of a non-touchscreen device can be tricky, but with the special “magic pencil” tool, the AI within the platform can predict what object you were trying to draw. This tool also now comes integrated within the drawing portion of Book Creator mentioned above.

There are already many different blogs and articles out there about how to use the incredible online creation tool known as Canva ( https://canva.com ). This tool is used for creating beautifully crafted newsletters to posters for the classroom. Students can use it in a variety of ways to share the information they learned. Two templates I particularly enjoy are the meme and infographic templates. Both are visually based and present information in a way that is different than a slide show. There are many free templates on the site, but if you pay for the pro version you unlock many more options for student creativity.

This fun little virtual reality tool can be done completely digitally or even analog if you print out the free grid sheets they offer on the Panoform website. The premise is that students can create their own 3D virtual room and fill it with any information they want to convey. A great hack for this is to upload an extremely wide slide from your presentation tool of choice (think 600X3000 or more in width) and then the slide becomes 360 degree virtual reality. The analog version could even be printed on large poster paper so that students can load it full of tidbits of information on whatever topic they want. If you have a cardboard VR headset, you can even switch it to VR mode to check it out in finer detail.

If your students are like my kids, they live in Minecraft world. The gaming platform ( https://education.minecraft.net/ ) can be used for a lot more than just Steve searching out for Creepers. It’s a great platform to represent things in scale. I worked with a 3rd grade teacher that had her students recreate the Egyptian pyramids to scale in Minecraft as part of a math/history lesson. During one of my keynotes I share an example of a student using Minecraft instead of slides to demonstrate the components of an ancient Roman bath house.

CoSpacesEDU

Why not program a virtual world to demonstrate what you are learning? With CospacesEDU ( https://www.cospaces.io/edu/ ) students can build their own worlds using augmented or virtual reality. CoSpaces takes that virtual world experience to the next level as students can use drag and drop coding to make the avatars move and interact. This isn’t for every student, but I have seen students that are into coding really lean into this type of project to show off their stuff. They can even make an interactive game for others to play!

Speaking of programming, you could actually bring interactive programming and storytelling out of the virtual world and into physical reality with Trashbots ( https://www.trashbots.co/ ). Trashbots offers a low-cost STEAM alternative to those traditional educational robotics platforms. It’s web-based coding and use of recycled items can create unique ways for students to tell their story and share what they learned through the mind of a robot.

Powtoon ( https://powtoon.com ) offers up a simple web interface for creating animated videos on just about any topic. Have students recreate their science lab safety video or maybe recreate a moment in history. What started as a simple cartoon platform now comes fully loaded with several backgrounds and avatars to create engaging animations that students could use to demonstrate just about anything in their imagination.

Stop Motion Studio

Animation can also be used in a physical form with stop motion videos. There are many different programs out there on the market for this, but I lean towards Stop Motion Studio ( https://www.cateater.com/ ). It is a paid program (one-time cost of $9.99), but the wide array of features (like putting different mouths on lego people) and tools (like green screen integration) make it much more powerful than just taking 100’s of pictures with your camera. This tool comes with a built-in video editor making it easy to erase mistakes in capturing the physical objects. One creative use of this that I’ve seen in middle school science is demonstrating the digestive cycle using stop motion. The end is a little gross but the kids learned a lot!

Unlike many of the tools mentioned here, Thinglink ( https://thinglink.com ) no longer has a free option except a 30-day trial. However, I still enjoy this tool as a way for students to create interactive displays with various “hotspots” placed over an image. These hotspots can expand to reveal audio, video, text, or additional media to dive deeper into the topic. Think of it like a massive bulletin board loaded with Post-it notes of information ready to be revealed. Explain significant events along a timeline or the parts of the cell in greater detail than a research paper or slide show.

Adobe Express

The app formerly known as Adobe Spark is now a powerhouse creative tool that is a free part of Adobe’s K12 Education suite. You can use the platform (much like Canva) to create large scale infographics and posters as well as presentation slides. The newly renovated Adobe Express ( https://www.adobe.com/education/express/ ) now comes with video editing features and even templates to create your own website. Check out their template library and massive community for more ideas on how to integrate this versatile tool in your classroom. I particularly like their Instagram templates for older students.

Google Sites

As much as this post is about options other than Google slides for students, I do like Google’s easy-to-use webpage creation platform. Google Sites ( https://sites.google.com/ ) offers a drag-n-drop interface on any mobile device and is free for all schools that use GSuite. Students can create interactive websites about just about any topic but I particularly like the idea of making a “faux” player card of an historical figure. Prezi Video

I remember when the original Prezi ( https://prezi.com/ ) came out over a decade ago. Almost every conference I went to had these amazing presentations where you could zoom in and out of different parts of an infinite space. One downside is that if you move from topic to topic too quickly, your audience might get motion sickness. The new and improved Prezi Video now features an overlay feature that lets students create “news report” type videos. While this feature is advertised for teacher use, it could easily be used as a way for students to explain a concept via video.

So far, every tool discussed on this blog has had some sort of visual component. But there are more than visual ways to present your information. Using a tool like Soundtrap ( https://www.soundtrap.com/edu ), students can create a spoken word poem, a podcast, or recreate a story scene using only their voices and sound effects. One district I work with uses the student-led podcast as a different way for the community to learn about school news other than a traditional newsletter.

This is not a new tool, just a renamed one. Flip is the the video messaging tool formerly known as FlipGrid ( https://my.flipgrid.com/ ). While the name change takes some getting used to, the tool itself is still a free platform for educators and students to create their own video reflections, exit tickets, or even trace out the solution to a problem. The upgraded platform comes packed with more backgrounds, stickers, and other overlays and they have several online events showcasing uses of their platform and even NBA superstar Stephen Curry .

Explain Everything

One of the first tools we ever purchased during our 1:1 program was Explain Everything ( https://explaineverything.com/ ). Quite simply, it is an easy-to-use whiteboarding tool that allows kids to explain their thinking. However, this tool is much more than a whiteboarding tool. You can add in videos, images, PDFs and annotate while recording your lesson. Teachers utilizing a flipped classroom model find this particular tool very valuable as it also has a built in video and audio editor. Turn on collaborate mode to have students work together in brainstorming their next product or have them record their findings to a particular equation.

The first time I ever learned about Buncee ( https://www.edu.buncee.com/ ), librarian guru Shannon Miller was showing me a variety of different ways students could use the platform. Described as a “creation and presentation tool for students and educators to create interactive classroom content” it’s kind of a combination of slide show software and interactive whiteboard software. Their ideaslab comes with a lot of pre-made lessons made by other educators, but I like the potential of using it as a student output tool.

All of the above tools are great alternatives for the traditional slide show presentation using Google slides. We often find as adults that we are most comfortable with tools we know and use regularly. Students are much the same way. The next time you have project or product for them to create, give them a list of alternative choices for how they want to demonstrate their learning. And if they are seemingly always choosing Google slides “because it’s the easiest” then challenge them by saying Google slides is no longer an option. They might struggle a bit learning something new, but in the end they’ll have gained knowledge about a new tool and empowerment in making their own choices.

Businesses, individuals, students, teachers and anyone who uses a Windows PC or device. PowerPoint is also a good fit for people who want to create simple, conventional presentations, and aren't looking for fancy new features or capabilities.

There are dozens of themes that come built-in with PowerPoint, and there are all customizable so you can play around with the styles.

You can browse stock images, icons, stickers and more by searching for relevant keywords in PowerPoint's graphic library.

Videos and GIFs can be uploaded from your computer. You can also embed videos from YouTube and other online sources. However, this feature is only available to Windows users.

Ludus starts at $14.99/month for teams of 1-15 people. Teams that need more licenses are encouraged to contact for more pricing information. Ludus does offer a 30-day free trial.

Ludus is quite easy to use and includes lots of keyboard shortcuts. It is easy to learn how to use and pretty straightforward. It seems to be easier for designers than for non-designers to use.

This presentation software is geared more towards designers or business owners who have some design knowledge to totally be able to use the broad capabilities.

There are no templates to choose from. You have to start from scratch or use smart blocks that you can create to use over and over easily. Smart blocks are kept in their own library.

Ludus has minimal in-house graphic assets like simple shapes, but the integrations are epic. You can import .svg icons and edit them inside Ludus quite easily. Photos can also be imported via Unsplash, Instagram, Facebook or uploaded.

Videos and GIFs are easily imported via the integrations like YouTube, Vimeo, Giphy and more.

Audio can be embedded as an audio file from SoundCloud, Dropbox and other integrations.

You can pretty much embed anything into Ludus. The integrations are impressive and there are also iframe and HTML options.

Internal elements can’t be animated but there are so many integrations that animations can be done in different ways.

Ludus is a cloud-based app. No need to download anything.

Presentations can only be edited on computers. Finished presentations can be viewed on all handheld devices that have access to the internet via a URL link.

Editing can be done in outline or design mode. The editing is limited to how the content blocks are set up, but there are lots of choices. There's no free size changing or moving around.

Startups, small businesses and entrepreneurs.

There are plenty of template options. They are organized in sections and niche. The template collection has presentations by known brands like Snapchat and Buzzfeed.

There are plenty of icons and images to choose from. However, there are no shapes, but icons can be used as shapes.

GIFs can be added via the Giphy integration in a content block. Video can be added in the paid plans.

The code snippet content block has lots of options so a lot of different kinds of third-party content can be added in.

Zoho show is completely free and without ads.

Zoho Show is pretty easy to use. The content blocks can be chosen as themes but they can also be moved around freely and resized. The presentation can be viewed in three ways, with a handy grid view to see all slides next to each other.

Businesses, entrepreneurs, educators and students. Anyone who needs to make a presentation.

There aren’t exactly templates, but there are themes. These do not come with images or lorem ipsum but are more like visual canvases that can be customized in terms of color, layout and more.

The shapes are pretty good, there are quite a bit to choose from. An added bonus is the possibility to draw shapes or scribble anything yourself with the trackpad.

Videos can be added via the YouTube integration and GIFs can be added as an image.

Audio can be added via Soundcloud with an embed code.

There are a number of sites that are supported via Embed codes but not that many. Zoho Show says that you can ask your needs to be added in the permitted list.

All elements and transitions can be animated.

Zoho Show is a cloud bases program and can be broadcast from anywhere and on any device. The live broadcast includes a chat window and the audience can download the presentation if they want to.

You can only create presentations on a computer.

Teams can easily use Zoho Show, even in the free version.

Custom branding is only available in the highest paid plan.

Sharing to social media is not possible unless downloaded as a PDF file and then uploaded to something like SlideShare.

Beautiful.ai is a presentation software that helps you create great-looking slides with the help of Artificial Intelligence. This means that your presentation will look professional every single time, regardless of who designs it.

Beautiful.ai currently offers a Pro plan at $12/month and a Team plan at $40/month, both billed annually. They offer a 14-day free trial to test out their tool.

This is probably the best thing about Beautiful.ai — it's incredibly simple to use. All you need to do is add smart slides, plug in your content, and choose from different preset layouts.

Of course, that also means that you have limited customization options. But if you're looking for a simple solution and you don't trust your design skills, this may be a good option for you.

Beautiful.ai is a great tool for absolute beginners and non-designers who are looking for a no-nonsense presentation software.

For example, startups and entrepreneurs can use this software to create a nice-looking pitch deck or proposal quickly without any design help.

There are a handful of slide themes available, but they're mostly basic in terms of design. You can play around with the layouts inside each theme to put together a unique presentation.

The graphic assets library comes with a bunch of free stock photos and icons to choose from, but the options are pretty limited.

Any change can be applied to all slides with a single click of the button in the menu. When editing, there is a "design view" and a "layers view."

There are plenty of template options. Some are free and some are only available via the premium plans. Presentation templates are also available as "video presentations."

The graphic assets in Genially are quite varied; there is plenty to choose from. Images can be uploaded or found on the Pixabay integration.

Videos can be added via a YouTube link and GIFs can be imported with the Giphy integration.

Audio can be uploaded from your computer, added via SoundCloud and a couple of other integrations, or recorded directly in Genially.

Canva is not only a presentation software but also a full editing program for all visual needs. Presentation creation is only one of the possibilities with Canva. It has become a favorite with bloggers and home-based businesses.

The free version of Canva is pretty extensive. The only restrictions are the use of premium resources that can be either bought separately or through the Canva Pro plan. Canva Pro is charged at $12.99/month or $119.99/year.

Canva Teams is $14.99/month + $14.99/month for every team member after the 5th.

Canva is easy to use as all elements are easy to find and are mostly customizable. Presentations are viewed scrolling; there is no master view and you can’t change something on all slides at once.

Haiku Deck is quite easy to use and menus are easy to follow. There are word size limiters and specific text placement choices for each slide. Charts are simple to create and can be customized. The editor can be connected via cloud to all devices. The new addition, Zuru, is an Artificial Intelligence system that creates creative presentations from simple PowerPoint files or outlines.

The Haiku Deck presentation software is geared mostly toward educators and classrooms. Businesses and bloggers can also use it for practical purposes.

Templates on Haiku Deck are more like an inspiring collection of photographs for a specific niche with some suggestions on where to place the text and what charts to include.

The available graphic assets library in Haiku Deck are millions of photographs, numerous font choices and charts and graphs.

Sway automatically adds animations to your slides. You cannot change or customize them; you can only increase or decrease the level of animation added to your Sway.

Prezi turns the traditional approach to presentations on its head. Instead of creating slide after slide, this presentation software gives you a single giant canvas. You can add blocks of text or images, or even create miniature slides. During your presentation, you can seamlessly fly around the canvas and zoom in to look at individual chunks of content.

For how complex Prezi seems, it’s impressively simple to use the platform. The only major divergence from Microsoft PowerPoint is that you need to add animated paths from one part of the canvas to another. The tools for this are fairly straightforward, especially if you’ve ever used an animation or video editing software.

Of course, this type of presentation structure isn’t always ideal. Prezi makes it hard to visualize structured data like financials, which can make it difficult to use in business applications. Some viewers also might not appreciate the fly-around animation style that’s inherent to the presentation software.

Best free presentation software for functionality

2. LibreOffice

LibreOffice is a free alternative to Microsoft Office, and it includes a Powerpoint equivalent called Impress with nearly all of the same functionality. The only big difference you’ll find between the two slideshow creation tools is the LibreOffice lacks some modern features like built-in collaboration and integration with Microsoft OneDrive.

However, Impress does have a few advantages of its own. The software can import files from Keynote, the default presentation software on Mac computers. Plus, there are hundreds of free templates that you can download for free. Even better, there’s no limit on what fonts you can use with Impress, so it’s easy to change the look of your presentation from what Powerpoint typically allows.

On the whole, LibreOffice Impress is about as close as it gets to simply replicating Microsoft Powerpoint for free.

3. Google Slides

Google Slides is part of Google Workspace (formerly G Suite), and it does a nice job of matching a number of PowerPoint’s capabilities. This free presentation software supports embedding videos, creating diagrams, and adding animations to your slides. While the selection of templates is somewhat limited, you can easily import hundreds of additional templates for free or create your own.

Even better, Google Slides supports the collaboration tools users have come to expect from Google. Multiple people can work on a slideshow simultaneously, and there’s a built-in group chat so you can keep track of what everyone is doing. It’s also nice that you can play your presentation in presenter mode, which allows you to preview how it will look to your audience and rehearse timing.

The only downside to Google Slides is that bloated slideshows can experience some loading delays. Also beware that while you can move between Slides and Powerpoint, the conversion often messes with the layout of your slides.

Canva is perfect for making speedy presentations right in your web browser. This software offers a handful of free layouts to help you get your slideshow started, and it’s easy to customize the templates to fit your needs. There isn’t a huge variety of content elements to add to your presentation, but Canva makes up for this with a searchable library of more than 1 million images you can use.

Your Canva presentations live online, which makes it extremely easy to collaborate. You can invite colleagues to edit your slideshow (although simultaneous editing is not supported) or seamlessly share your finished presentation. However, beware that Canva can’t import presentations from Microsoft Powerpoint or export finished work to a Powerpoint-editable format.

WPS Office Free is a Microsoft Office look-alike that fully support PowerPoint files without any layout issues during import. One of the best things about this presentation software is that the user interface will feel incredibly familiar if you’re coming from Microsoft. All of the tools are displayed in a top ribbon, with your slides shown on the left side of the screen for easy navigation. It’s simple to display your presentation right from WPS Presentation, which means there’s no unexpected troubleshooting when it’s time to show off your work.

This year, get your language learners to present their learning in a multimedia slideshow. If this is one of their first presentations, keep it simple by providing your students with a general topic to explore, such as careers. Then give your learners the freedom to narrow their topic for their presentations (e.g., engineer or  teacher ).

Make sure students choose two or three areas to explore to ensure no topic is repeated. Provide students with a checklist of information to gather about the topic. For careers, students would need to find out salaries, duties, top hiring companies, needed skills, and required certifications. When your students complete their research, students should deliver an oral presentation alongside their multimedia slideshow.

3 Presentation Forms for Language Learners

Here are three recommended multimedia slideshows tools and apps that you can introduce to your language learners as they prepare their presentations. For language learners, shorter presentations are less intimidating. Have your learners deliver a TED Talk , Ignite , or Pecha Kucha style presentation.

TED Talks are anywhere from 3 to 23 minutes and are about innovation, passions, inventions, or incredible ideas. Get language learners to study TED Talks by presenters their age and analyze the content and delivery. After analyzing a few TED Talks, have students provide you a topic for their own TED Talk they will deliver in front of their peers. An Ignite is a 5 minute presentation style in which students design 20 slides that auto advance every 15 seconds. The idea is for students to create well designed presentations with little text. Find a lesson plan and tips here, Teaching Presentation Skills with Ignite .

A Pecha Kucha is a presentation style invented by architects Klein and Dytham in Japan. The presentation lasts 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Students design 20 slides with mostly visuals and very little text. Each slide auto advances every 20 seconds. Presentation Tools and Apps

Create multimedia slideshows with templates, transitions, and animations with free web tools, such as Flowvella , EduBuncee (iOS app), Sway , Google Slides (iOS/Android apps), Emaze , and Canva (iOS app). Recently, Google Slides integrated a question and answer feature to engage learners.

Slideshare , Haiku Deck (iOS app), and Slide.ly are general slide creation tools with templates and resorces to help students create visually stunning presentations.

Present.me , Prezi (iOS app), and Voicethread (iOS app) allow students to add voice and video narration to their slides.

Photopeach , students create a slide presentation with quizzes, images and add music.

Livebinders is an online web tool and free mobile app that looks like a digital school binder. Students can choose presentation mode when delivering their oral presentations. It has various tabs, so students can embed websites, pdfs, images, video, and more. Students can also edit each tab’s html to design the look of the tab. Livebinders works on multiple platforms and has an extension for students to easily collect their research from the web.

Effective online teaching and learning strategies: interdisciplinary research of student perceptions in higher education

Higher Education has serious challenges regarding academic online teaching-learning-evaluation methods and tools. This study examined 980 students from diverse disciplines about their social-emotional-psychological (SEP) perceptions. We also examined the presence and desirability of 14 TLE (teaching-learning-evaluation) tools in the online learning environment. Findings indicate that current academic online learning does not meet students’ social-emotional needs and reveals a significant demand for practical and engaging methods like simulations and interactive platforms. Diverse disciplines expose different needs (e.g., business and engineering students reported a greater lack of empowerment and lowered acquisition of skills than students from disciplines characterized by higher engaging online learning, such as education and social sciences). Diversified teaching methods, interactive platforms, group support and assessment are needed to address diverse needs. This study extends the international understanding of SEP and TLE theoretical and methodological concepts and suggests practical solutions for effective online teaching-learning and evaluation for diverse disciplines.
