Let’s get into the best ESL transportation activities.

#1: Concentration ESL Transport Game

This is a fun memory game that’s helpful when teaching new vocabulary words. Make up matching cards with one of the following combinations:

• Pictures/words
• Pictures/hints
• Words/definitions

Then, in small groups, students play a matching game to try to get as many pairs as possible. It’s challenging, fun and an ideal way to review new transport words. Find out how to do it:

#3: Word Association Vocabulary ESL Activity

Unless you teach absolute beginners, it’s likely that students already know a good amount of transportation words in English. #4: Man/Woman on the Street

A common conversation topic related to transport is how people get to school or work. It’s useful but certainly not that exciting. A way to liven this up a little bit is to make it into a fun interview-style activity. Find out how to do it:

#5: Transportation Song for Kids

If you teach children, then definitely consider using some songs and chants in your English classes. However, if you’re not musical (like me!), then not to worry. There are a ton of great options on YouTube. Have a look and you’ll be able to easily find what you’re looking for.

#6: Dictogloss ESL Transport Game

If you teach slightly more advanced students, then consider using dictogloss . It’s challenging, covers a few different skills and is perfect for just about any topic, including this one.

Find (or write) a passage where someone is talking about how they get to school or work. Then, put students into pairs and read it out at a faster than normal pace for the level of the students. They have to work together to try to recreate what they heard. Read it again, even more quickly. Students do the same and then compare what they have with the original version.

#7: Transportation Idioms Activity

There are a ton of English idioms related to transport. Just a few of them are:

• hit the road
• drive someone up the wall
• rock the boat
• to be in the same boat
• throw someone under the bus
• off the beaten track

#8: Odd One Out

This is a fun review or warm-up game to try out. Write down a group of 4 words on the board, 3 of which are very similar while one is different. For example:

• Bus, taxi, boat, car

Students have to say which one doesn’t fit and why. There are sometimes many possible answers but in this case, most students would choose a boat because it’s on water, not on a road. Or, it doesn’t have wheels like the other ones. Find out all the details:

#9: Ball Toss ESL Game

This is a fun game for beginners who are learning some new transportation words. Write down some questions on a beach ball and have students toss it around the class, answering questions as they go. Find out more about it here:

Okay, so dictation is a little bit old school but it does certainly have some value and I like to do it once in a while. It’s ideal for introverts who may not always like talking to people and it’s a nice way to review spelling and punctuation. For beginners, say target words and students have to write them down. For more advanced learners, say sentences containing the target words and students have to write them down, using correct punctuation.

#12: Flyswatter Game

If you teach kids, then try out this fun ESL game. The way it works is that you write a bunch of the target vocabulary on the whiteboard. In this case, words like car, bus, airplane, etc.

Then, a student from each team comes up to the board and takes a flyswatter. The teacher gives hints about a word and the first student to slap the correct one gets a point for their team. Erase the word and add a new one and continue on until everyone has had a chance to play. Check it out:

#13: Postcards Writing Activity and Transportation ESL

When writing a postcard, how we get somewhere is often part of it. For example,

• The boat ride was really bumpy.
• The bus ride was so long.
• I’m really tired because my plane got delayed and I had to sleep overnight at the airport.

I like to include a bit of spelling practise in my classes and this is a fun way to do that. It’s basically a whiteboard race to write down the correct word. For beginners, just say the word but for more advanced learners, you could give a hint about it. Check it out:

It’s likely that students already know a good amount of transportation vocabulary since words like car, bicycle, and plane are found even in phonics or young learner books. This is a nice warmer activity to help students activate their prior knowledge about this topic:

A lot of problems in our lives stem from transport! For example,

#22: Listening Lesson Plan on Transport

It’s very easy to design your own listening lesson plan for transport. There are just a few simple steps to follow to come up with your own. Find out how:

#23: Hot Seat

Divide the class into two teams. One student from each team sits in a “hot seat” facing their team while the teacher shows a flashcard with a transportation word to the rest of the class. The team members must give clues or describe the transportation word without saying the actual word. The student in the hot seat tries to guess the word based on their team’s clues.

#24: Guess the Sound

Play various audio clips of transportation sounds, such as a car engine, a train whistle, or a plane taking off. Students listen to the sounds and try to identify the mode of transportation associated with each sound.

This is a nice lesson which not only teaches transportation vocabulary but also how to ask and reply to a question on how they arrived at their school.

Lesson procedure:

Warm up and maintenance:.

The beginning of your lesson is extremely important: this is where you set the tone of your lesson and get everyone in the right frame of mind for learning English. It is also an opportunity to check homework and review previous lessons.

These activities can be done in the following order at the start of your lesson:

1. Greetings and name tags Greet the students by name as they enter the classroom and gesture for them to sit down. Before class prepare some blank name tags (stickers or pin-on tags). Give these out and have everyone write their names and put their tags on. If you use pin-on tags, you can keep and give out every class.

2. Homework check Check each student’s homework set in the last lesson. Ask each student some questions about their homework worksheet (e.g. “what [hide_on_uk]color[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colour[/hide_on_us] is it?”), give lots of praise, and then put some kind of mark on the homework sheet (e.g. a sticker, a stamp or draw a smiley face). Finally, tell your students to put their homework back into their bags.

3. Review past lessons Reviewing past lessons is very important – students need constant practice of new vocab, structures, songs, games and so on. Always review parts of your last lesson as well as some parts from other previous lessons. You can spend 5-10 minutes reviewing – it’s fine to recycle games and activities from your past lessons to review as kids enjoy playing familiar games (although be careful not to play a game to death!). See the section “Other ideas to include in your warm” below for ideas.

You can also include review activities in the main body of your lesson. Kids can have short attention spans so it’s good to be able to pull out lots of activities during different stages of the lesson.

Other ideas to include in your warm up:

Ball pass questions This is good to review questions from previous lessons. Get everybody standing in a circle.

Round 1: Take a ball and hold it and say, “My name is (you name)”.  Then throw the ball to one student and say, “What’s your name?”. Students throw the ball around randomly, saying their names and asking for names.

Round 2: This time ask a review question, e.g. “How many tables are there?”.  Then throw the ball to a student who should answer, “There are (6) tables”.  Help if necessary.  Then that student throws the ball to another student and asks a “How many …?” question.  Continue so everyone has a go.  You can have multiple rounds with different topic questions.

Play “Spin the bottle” Sit students in a circle with a bottle in the middle.  Teacher spins the bottle.  When it stops spinning the student it is pointing to has to answer a question.  If the answer is correct then that student can spin the bottle.  This is a good class warm up activity (e.g. How are you?  What’s your [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] food?  How’s the weather today?, etc.

Play “Vocabulary basketball” This is a fun game which reviews vocabulary from previous lessons. You will need a basket (a trash can) and 2 balls (or 2 pieces of A4 paper scrunched up into balls).

Form 2 teams and line them up so that two players from each team are facing the front with the basket in front of them. Let both players throw their ball – if they get their ball into the basket they can try and win a point by giving the correct answer to a question the teacher asks. This can be an actual question (e.g. What are you wearing?) or a flashcard (What’s this?).  Then they go to the back of the line.  At the end, the team with the most points is the winner!

Play “What’s missing?” This is a fun review memory game – students will have to try to remember review objects from previous lessons (e.g. classroom stationery). Lay the objects out on a table for all to see.  Allow the students a minute to memorize the positions of the objects. Remove an object and hold it behind your back. Say, “Open your eyes!” – the first student who can shout out the missing object wins a point for his/her team. Play for all the objects.

Finally, calculate which team has won the most points and give them a round of applause.

Play “Quiz game show” This is a fun quiz game, like a simple version of a TV game show. Draw some circles on the board and randomly write numbers 1, 2 or 3 in each circle.  These will be points.

Put students into teams. Then ask the first team to choose a number – 1 is an easy question (e.g. “Do you like bananas?”) and 3 is a difficult question (e.g. point at a clock and ask, “What time is it?”).  2 will be in between in terms of difficulty.  When the question has been answered correctly, erase that number circle.  Play until all the number circles are gone – the team with the most points is the winner!

Read a classroom reader again As you progress through the lessons you will start to build up a catalog of classroom readers (see our Readers download page at https://www.eslkidstuff.com).  Kids love going back to old stories and reading through them again.  Invite a student to pick a classroom reader and read through it as a class.  Make the story as interactive as possible by asking questions (e.g. what [hide_on_uk]colors[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colours[/hide_on_us] there are, the names of different objects, etc.) and getting students to speculate what is going to happen next in the story.

Talk about the weather (do after you have taught the weather lesson plan).

• Prepare a weather board . Before the first class prepare a piece of cardboard and cover it with felt – you are going to pin this to the wall.  If you can, try and get blue felt (to represent the sky). Write at the top in large letters, “How’s the weather today?”.  Below that write “Today it’s”.  Cut out weather pictures (such as our weather flashcards) and stick some velcro on the back.  Arrange the weather pictures around the edge of the board and then put the board on the wall of your classroom.  You can now use this weather board at the beginning of every lesson.
• Ask about the weather . Ask, “How’s the weather today?” and have students put up their hands. Allow one weather condition per student (e.g. “It’s rainy”) and have each student come up and put a weather picture on the weather board.
• Introduce more weather vocabulary. Depending on weather conditions, you can introduce more weather words (with pictures … you can get students to draw them), such as:

New learning and practice:

1. Play vocabulary flashcard treasure hunt Before class, prepare flashcards of the vocabulary from the song (walk, bus, bicycle, car, train, boat, [hide_on_uk]airplane[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]aeroplane[/hide_on_us], rocket) and hide them around the classroom – behind a chair, on the window sill, in a book, etc.

In class, sit your students down and start hunting around the room, gesturing that you are looking for something. “Find” one of the flashcards and look relieved and happy to have found it. Indicate that there are 7 more flashcards to find and get everyone to hunt around the room helping you to look for the flashcards. Once all of the flashcards have been found sit everyone down again.

2. Teach the transport vocabulary On the board, draw a simple picture of your school at one end of the board and your home (a simple house) at the other. Alternatively, you can use photos of both. Tell your students what each place is (“This is our school – here!”, “This is my house. I live here!” (maybe draw a picture of yourself above the house)).

You are going to teach the vocabulary in the order they are mentioned in the song you are going to sing a bit later on. Pull out the first card (“walk”). Put the card on the board between the school and your house. Say slowly, “I got here  on foot … on foot … on foot .”, whilst doing the gesture of walking on the spot. Get all of your students to stand up and walk on the spot as they say, “on foot .. on foot …”.

Next pull out the bus flashcard and replace the walk flashcard with it on the board. This time say, “I got here  by bus … by bus … by bus ” whilst doing the gesture of driving a bus and beeping the horn. Get all of your students to stand up and pretend to drive a bus and beep the horn as they say “by bus … by bus …”.

Continue doing this for all of the cards and gestures from the song. For the last one – “rocket” – get everyone to count down from 10 to 1 and then jump as they blast off!

3. Play “Vocabulary art gallery” If you have just a few students: draw some squares on the board in a row for each student to draw in (these are their picture frames). You’ll need one square (or picture frame) per student. Make sure the squares are at a good height so everyone can reach.

If you have a lot of students: give each student a piece of paper and have them draw 8 boxes (picture frames) on the paper. Tell everyone they are going to draw some pictures.

For smaller classes have your students stand in front of one of the squares on the board. Say, “Draw … I got here … by boat”). Everyone should draw a picture of a boat in their square (or the first square of the sheet of paper for students in larger classes). Give a minute for this (you can use an egg timer for fun!). When the time is up say, “STOP!”. Now, you are the judge. Walk around looking at the pictures and give some comments (“hmmm, not bad” … “oh, very nice!”, etc.). Finally, award a winner for the best drawing and get everyone to clap.

Now, erase the pictures on the board (or if using paper move onto the second square) and go onto the next vocabulary item (e.g. by bike). Again, judge the pictures and select a winner. Go through all of the pictures, each time electing a different winner – try and make sure everyone wins at least once. If you have more than 8 students you can choose joint winners.

4. Sing the “How did you get here today?” song Put the flashcards on the board in order of the song (or use our song poster). Run through the gestures (see below) first. Then play the song and sing along doing the gestures. If this is the first time to sing the song, play it a second time.

Gestures for “How did you get here today?”

Some simple actions can be used with this song:

• Do the question pose (palms up, puzzled look on face) for the question “How did you get here today?”, but point downwards (to the ground) for the “here” part.
• As the song plays do the following actions: • on foot: walk on the spot. • by bus: pretend to drive a bus and beep the horn. • by bicycle: pretend to be cycling and ring a bell. • by car: pretend to drive a car and beep the horn. • by train: do the train gesture – moving your hands around like a wheel and “chu-chu”ing. • by boat: do wave motions with your hands. • by [hide_on_uk]airplane[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]aeroplane[/hide_on_us]: pretend to be an [hide_on_uk]airplane[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]aeroplane[/hide_on_us] by holding your arms right out. • by rocket: put your arms above your head, finger tips touching to make a rocket shape. Keep this shape for the countdown and then jump for the blast off.

5. Read classroom reader “Let’s climb a mountain!” Before class, download and print off the reader “Let’s climb a mountain!”. As you go through each page, point to the pictures, elicit each key word, and have your students say how each person got to the top of the mountain, for example:

Teacher: What is this? (pointing at the car) Students: It’s a car! Teacher: Yes, that’s right! How did the man get to the top of the mountain? Students: By car. Teacher: Let’s check … (reading from the story) … I got here by car. Right!

Get the students really involved in the story by asking lots of questions (e.g. eliciting colors) and getting them to do the actions of each vehicle.

After reading the story, give out a reader worksheet to each student and read through the story one more time (without stopping for questions, etc.) as students draw the modes of transport onto their worksheets.  Then go through the answers as a class.

6. Practice asking and answering “How did you get here today?” with a class survey Before class, print out the “How did you get here today? survey”. Draw enough columns for each student in the class and write their names at the top. Then copy enough for all of your students.

Start by modeling – hold up your survey and point out the names at the top. Choose one student and ask, “How did you get here today?”. Elicit a full answer (E.g. “I got here by bus.”) and show everyone how to fill in the survey (by drawing a circle in the correct cell). Do with a few students until everyone understands. If someone gives an impossible answer (e.g. rocket), show an expression of shock and then say, “Noooo, that can’t be right!” and have a laugh, but try to elicit their true answer. Then, give out a survey to everyone.

First, get everyone to find their own name and circle their answer. Then get everyone to mingle about asking and answering and filling in their surveys.

When everyone has finished, complete your survey sheet by asking the class for the answers (e.g. “How did Naomi get here today?”).

1. Assign homework Each week give out a homework worksheet for your students to take home. Hold up the homework worksheet and model how to do it. Give out the worksheets and say, “Put your homework in your bags”.

2. Do “Quick check” Time to leave the class. Make sure everything is put away and the students have gathered their belongings. Have them line up at the door and place yourself between the door and the students. For each student check one new word or phrase, for example:

• hold up an object or flashcard (such as an item of clothing) and ask, “What’s this?”
• ask a question from the lesson (e.g. “Where do you live?”, “Do you like bananas?”, “Can you play chess?”, etc.)

When they give you the correct answer say goodbye and let them leave.  If their answer is wrong, have them go back to the end of the line – they will have to try again once they reach the front!

Digital tools and ideas to transform education, 8 engaging esl activities for teaching about travelling.

Engaging ideas and activities revolving about the topic of travelling coming right up!

These are some of the activities I have been doing with my upper-intermediate students. I thought I might share them with you, in case it saves you some time.

I have split the activities into two days as some of the activities in Day 2 require studying the vocabulary introduced in Day 1.

As my students are upper-intermediate, it is not the first time they study this popular topic.  Therefore, to revise some of the words I thought they knew, I used the website Half a crossword. 

Addicted to using technology in my class, as I have confessed time and again, I have used Genial.ly to create some flashcards.  The flashcards were initially used in class and then shared with them to encourage revision outside the walls of the classroom.

The flashcards contain common collocations related to travelling, but some words are missing. Before flipping the card, students try to guess the hidden word(s). The initial letters are provided to make guessing easier for them.

Think about it: how many pictures are stored on our mobile phones? What could engage students more than talking about what is real for them, about their own experiences, about their own trips?

Ask students to take out their mobile phones and ask them to choose their favourite picture from their last holiday. Allow some minutes for this part. Ask students to work in pairs or threes. Ask them to show the picture to their partners, talking about it and sharing the story behind the picture.  Encourage the use of the collocations in the exercise above.

This “flexible seating” strategy is quickly becoming one of my favourites to pair students with different partners. I explained the strategy here

For this exercise, I sellotaped to the back of the chairs of the classroom the phonetic transcription of the collocations studied in the flashcard activity. This way, I killed two birds with one stone, as the exercise helped me to revise the collocations and ensure they pronounced the words in the correct way.  To transcribe the collocations, I used a website I have been using for years. Check it out here.

Using a presentation with some conversation questions I created on Spark Adobe some years ago, I asked my students to discuss the questions trying to use the collocations studied in Activity 4.

Every two questions, I gathered all the cards containing the collocations, shuffled them and redistributed them. This meant, standing up and finding the matching card with the corresponding pronunciation and then, sitting on that chair and talking to a different student.

Groups of 4 students.  I displayed the first dilemma and asked students to pair up within the group and discuss for some minutes what they would do.  Then, I asked them to share their ideas in their groups and finally, we had a whole-class discussion.

I created some posters using Canva.com and put them on the walls of the classroom. To form groups, I numbered them off and asked all number 1s to form a group, all number 2s to form a group, …etc. This way, I made sure they worked with different students.

Before the class, I put the 5 posters up on the walls of the class. Next to the posters, I also put 3 or 4 cards containing common collocations from Activity 4.

I instructed the groups to choose a poster and discuss the question in the poster, trying to use the vocabulary in the cards.

I did not set a time for each poster, I gave them the freedom to discuss as much as they wanted, but encouraged them to do at least three posters. I dedicated 25 minutes to this activity.

I like the efficiency and organization of the website. The resources cater to various levels with topic-based options for higher levels. With these ten activities, students will learn all about how people and products get from place to place.

This lesson idea that can be carried on through many sessions. The idea is to introduce and discuss different modes of transportation and in the end, create one or more transportation artifacts.

Vocabulary:

water, air, land, boats, cars, automobiles, ships, sailing, walking, movement, bicycle, sled, canoe, airplane, truck, schoolbus, skateboard, skates, airport, vehicles, driver, pilot, captain, traffic light, horn, windshield wipers, safety belts, steering wheel, trains, fuel, gas, tires, dump truck, pick-up truck, station-wagon, sports car, garage, tractors

Discussion/Field Trips:

Discuss different modes of transportation on land, sea and in the air. Talk about how people get to where they are going (school bus, ferry boat, car etc.) Incorporate field trips wherever possible. Take a trip on a school bus, walk around the school parking lot to look at cars, visit the airport, bus station or train station. Watch videos that show different forms of transportation. Look at travel magazines. Ask if anyone has been on a plane … a train … a horse … etc. Ask how students get to school everyday. How do kids in other countries travel? Leave lots of time for discussion. Make sure to review safety rules (seat belts in cars, obeying traffic signals, walk and don’t walk signs). Don’t forget to discuss how products are delivered … couriers with trucks, airplanes etc. How does the mail travel?

Activities:

BULLETIN BOARD ACTIVITY: Students can collect images of different types of transportation and add them to a bulletin board that has been divided into Land, Sea and Air.

TRANSPORTATION MURAL: Students can work together to create a transportation mural (one for land, one for sea and one for air).

SOUND PICTURES: What sounds do the various modes of transportation make? (train whistle, truck horn, police car siren) How would these sounds appear if we were to draw them? Provide crayons and paper for students to experiment with the colors and shapes of transportation sounds.

TOY CAR PRINTMAKING: Using old toy cars and tempera paint, allow students to dip the cars into paint and “drive” them across paper to see what kinds of marks the tires make.

LICENSE PLATE RUBBINGS: Using old license plates (or plate on cars in the parking lot) allow students to do rubbings of the plates. Provide paper and crayons for the rubbings.

SHAPE VEHICLES: See how many types of transportation vehicles can be created using the basic geometric shapes (triangles, squares, circles, rectangles). Have students cut their shapes out of construction paper and arrange them to create vehicles.

PAPER BOATS: Make paper boats using the directions found HERE . Decorate them with bright crayon colors.

PAPER AIRPLANES: Make paper airplanes. Decorate them with bright crayon colors.

TRANSPORTATION MOBILE:

What You Need: String or yarn; coat hangers; thick paper; paint; brushes; scissors; hole punch; markers or crayons

What You Do: After discussing how people and products get from place to place, students can create drawings and paintings of various modes of transportation on thick paper. The pictures can be painted or decorated with markers or crayons. Once complete, the pictures can be cut out and put together in a mobile … by punching holes in the pictures and hanging them from a coat hanger that has been wrapped with yarn or raffia. **Have your students write facts on the back of each of their modes of transportation. (ie trucks deliver newspapers; people travel on airplanes etc.)

TAKE A TRIP ON A ZEBRA: Have students consider what life would be like without cars or trucks. What if we traveled by riding animals? Not just any animals: elephants, zebras, tigers, ducks etc. Students can draw or paint their ideas on paper.

Touring and Tourism

We can define tourism as traveling to various popular tourist and heritage locations in the state, country or anywhere in the world. It helps us to learn the history and cultural heritage of the place that is passed on to the people from generation to generation. It helps us to learn the heritage and culture of our own land too.

We enjoy tourism because each place provides us with a unique experience and various different facilities. All the facilities like the hotel, conveyance, restaurants, and public transport, etc. need to be booked in advance.

For making your trip more relaxing, all you have to do is book all these facilities well in advance. It costs a lot but is worth every penny you spend on it as it relaxes the mind, body, and soul.

Also, we learn a lot about different cultures, practical issues, and interacting with people of multiple backgrounds and manners.

In India, tourism is not convenient and as easy as that in developed countries. Moreover, there are many limitations that the ministry of tourism should correct so that the tourism industry can bloom and make profits for the economy.

Besides, many foreigners are not interested in Indian tourism because of the risks of infection and dirtiness.

Niche Tourism

This concept has emerged in recent years, it counter-point to what we referred to as ‘mass tourism’. Niche tourism signifies diversity and ways of making differences. Moreover, it plays on pejorative connections that have accompanied the evolution of mass and package tourism.

It is often cited as the negative impacts in relation to socio-cultural disturbance and environmental degradation. On one hand, the destination managers and planners seek to utilize tourism as a mechanism for economic development.

While on the other hand, a niche tourism approach appears to often greater opportunities and tourism, which is sustainable. More capable and less damaging to the environment.

Types of Niche Tourism

We can broadly divide niche tourism into three components namely: cultural tourism, environmental tourism, and rural tourism.

Cultural tourism is the subgroup of tourism that concerns the culture, precisely the lifestyle of people of that particular area, history of people, their art architecture, etc.

Environmental tourism or nature tourism provides an opportunity to visit undisturbed natural areas, beautiful views, and to observe the plant and wildlife.

Rural tourism showcase the rural life art, culture, and heritage in rural regions of the country, thus benefiting the local community socially and economically.

To sum it up, we Indians’ love to travel and that’s why we visit various pilgrimage centers and big towns and cities. However, tourism to isolated heritage centers is perhaps not our first choice. But it is enough that we boast ourselves of India and its greatness.

Nonetheless, we do not visit our own monuments and heritage to remember our ancestor’s great deeds and constructions.
