సుహాస్ అనగానే “కలర్ ఫొటో” గుర్తొస్తుంది. అతని సినిమాలో ఏదో ప్రత్యేకత ఉంటుందనేది ఒక అంచనా. “రైటర్ పద్మభూషణ్” పేరుతో రావడం, పేడింగ్ ఆర్టిస్టులు కూడా గుర్తింపున్న నటీనటులు కావడం వల్ల ప్రేక్షకుల దృష్టి దీనిపై పడింది. 

కథలోకి వెళ్దాం. లైబ్రరీలో పనిచేసే  పద్మభూషణ్ అనే యువకుడు ఒక నవల రాస్తాడు. ఇంతకీ అతని తల్లి గృహిణి, తండ్రి ఒక ఆఫీసులో క్లర్క్. ఖర్చులన్నీ పోను నెలకి తన జీతంలో రూ 8000 మిగిలితేనే అదొక ఘనవిజయంగా భావిస్తుంటాడు ఆ తండ్రి. తల్లిదండ్రులకి చెప్పకుండా ఫ్రెండ్ చేత నాలుగు లక్షలు అప్పు చేయించి మరీ తన నవల కాపీలు అచ్చువేసి పుస్తకాల షాపుల్లో పెడతాడు. కానీ ఎవరూ కొనరు. గొప్ప రైటర్ గా పేరు తెచ్చుకోవాలన్న తన కల కలగానే మిగిలిపోతుంటుంది. 

ఇంతలో తన మేనమామ నుంచి తన తల్లిదండ్రులకి ఒక పెళ్లివేడుకకి పిలుపొస్తుంది. ఆ మేనమామ బాగా ధనవంతుడు. కొంతకాలంగా ఆ కుటుంబంతో మాటలు లేకపోయినా ఈ పిలుపుతో మళ్లీ కలుస్తారు. 

అయితే ఆ వేడుకలో ఆ రైటర్ పద్మభూషణ్ కి తన కూతుర్నిచ్చి పెళ్లిచేస్తానని ప్రకటిస్తాడు. అందుకు కారణం తనకి తెలియకుండానే తాను ఫేమస్ రైటరైపోవడం…తన పేరుతో ఎన్నో పుస్తకాలు మార్కెట్లో ఉండడం…ఒక బ్లాగ్ కూడా సక్సెస్ఫుల్ గా నడుస్తుండడం. అతనికి తన మేనమామ కూతురు ఫ్యానైపోతుంది. కనుక పెళ్లి తనతోనే అనుకుంటుంది తాను కూడా. 

ఇంతకీ తన పేరుతో అన్నేసి నవలలు, బ్లాగులో సీరియల్ రాస్తున్నదెవరు? ఒక పక్కన తనది కాని పాపులరిటీని ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తూనే తన పేరుతో రాతలు రాసే ఆ వ్యక్తిని పట్టుకోవడమే హీరో పని. చివరిదాకా ఆ అన్వేషణే. క్లైమాక్స్ లో ఆ వ్యక్తి ఎవరనేది రివీలౌతుంది.  

ఈ కథలో ప్రధానమైన కంప్లైంట్ ఎత్తుకున్న కథాంశమే. ఈ రోజుల్లో నవలా రచయితలకి క్రేజెక్కడుంది? స్మార్ట్ ఫోన్ల యుగంలో లైబ్రరీలో ఉద్యోగం చేసే హీరోనా? ఆ హీరోకి తన కూతుర్నిచ్చి పెళ్లిచేయడానికి ధనికుడైన ఒక వ్యక్తి ఉవ్విళ్ళూరడమా? దానికేదో కారణం చెప్పినా అది అతికించినట్టే ఉంది తప్ప అతికినట్టు లేదు. 

అలాగే బార్బర్ షాపుల్లో పుస్తకాలు, మేగజైన్స్ ఉండే రోజులెప్పటివి? 1990ల్లో ఉండేది అలాగ. 

మొత్తంగా కథ తాలూకూ ఏంబియెన్సే మైనస్. ఇదే కథని 1980ల నేపథ్యంలో పెట్టుంటే కన్విన్సింగ్ గా ఉండేది. కానీ అలా పెట్టడం వల్ల బ్లాగులో తన పేరుతో ఇంకెవరో సీరియల్ రాయడమనే సీన్ కి అడ్డొస్తుందనుకున్నారేమో. అటువంటి క్లాషెస్ ఉంటాయనుకున్నప్పుడు మరోలా సన్నివేశాలు రూపొందించుకోవాలి తప్ప కాంప్రమైజ్ అయిపోవడమో, ఆడియన్స్ ని గ్రాంటెడ్ గా తీసుకోవడమో చేయకూడదు కదా! 

ఈ మైనస్ లు పక్కన పెట్టి, కథలోని భావోద్వేగవిషయాన్ని తీసుకుంటే అది కేవలం క్లైమాక్సులో మాత్రమే పండింది. తక్కిన సినిమా అంతా ఒక రాం-కాం జానర్లో సాగింది. 

సుహాస్ తన నటనతో మెప్పించాడు. పాత్రకు తగ్గట్టుగా ఎక్కడ ఎంత చెయ్యాలో అంత చక్కగా చేసాడు. కృత్రిమత్వం లేకుండా చివరిదాకా మోసాడు. 

హీరోయిన్ టీనా శిల్పరాజ్ పర్వాలేదు. కొన్నిచోట్ల కాస్త ఓవర్ గా అనిపించినా ఓవరాల్ గా ఓకే. మరొక నటి గౌరి ప్రియ చూడ్డానికి బాగుంది. హీరోయిన్ తండ్రి పాత్రలో గోపరాజు రమణ, హీరో తండ్రి పాత్రలో ఆశిష్ విద్యార్థి తమ పని తాము చేసారు. లో ప్రొఫైల్ మెయింటేన్ చేస్తూ రోహిణి బాగా నటించింది. 

శేఖర్ చంద్ర సంగీతాన్ని మాత్రం మెచ్చుకుని తీరాలి. పాటలన్నీ బాగున్నాయి. లిరిక్స్ స్పష్టంగా వినపడ్డాయి. సాహిత్యం రాసిన కవులు కూడా మెప్పుకి అర్హులు. ముఖ్యంగా ఒకపాటలో “తాలింపు- గుర్తింపు- వేధింపు” లాంటి పదాలతో చేసిన ప్రయోగం ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. 

కెమెరా పనితనం బాగానే ఉంది కానీ గొప్పగా లేదు. మరీ రియలెస్టిక్ గా, ఔట్ డేటెడ్ గా ఉంది. నిడివి 2 గంటలే అయినా, ఎడిటింగ్ ఇంకాస్త షార్ప్ గా ఉంటే బాగుండేదనిపించందంటే ఇది ఎంత సన్నని ఉల్లిపొర కథో అర్థమవుతుంది. 

తక్కువ బడ్జెట్లో తీసినా ఇలాంటి సినిమాలు ఎంత తోసినా థియేటర్లో కష్టం. ఓటీటీల్లో మాత్రం మంచి పేరు తెచ్చుకుంటాయి. అందుకే ఇలాంటి కథలతో కూడిన మళయాళ సినిమాలు డైరెక్ట్ గా ఓటీటీలోనే విడుదలౌతుంటాయి. బాగున్నాయనిపించుకుంటాయి. కానీ థియేటర్లోకి వచ్చి ఆడకపోవడం వల్ల సక్సెస్ కాని సినిమాగా నెగటివీటిని మూట కట్టుకోవడం తప్ప మరొకటి ఉండదు. అయితే హాల్లో విడుదలైతేనే ఓటీటీ రైట్స్ కొంటామంటే నిర్మాతలు చేయకలిగిందేమీ ఉండదు. 

సినిమా అంటే కేవలం దృశ్యాల కదలిక కాదు. ఒక భావోద్వేగపు ప్రపంచంలో ప్రయాణం చేయించడం. లాజికల్ బ్రెయిన్ ని పని చేయనీయకుండా ఎమోషన్ అనే మేజిక్ లోకి తీసుకువెళ్ళడం. అది ఆద్యంతం ఉంటే గొప్ప సినిమాగా కీర్తి పొందుతుంది, అదే కేవలం క్లైమాక్స్ కి పరిమితమైతే “మంచి సినిమాయేలే” అనిపించుకుంటుంది. క్లైమాక్స్ కారణంగా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని అలాంటి “మంచి సినిమా” కేటగరీలో వేయాల్సొస్తుంది.

'Writer Padmabhushan' movie review: A pleasing coming-of-age drama

There is a simple and beautiful moment early in debutant Shanmukha Prasanth’s Writer Padmabhushan that not only illustrates the protagonist’s character but also doubles up as a whistle-worthy mass moment. Padmabhushan (Suhas) an aspiring writer has self-published his first novel, quite literally named ‘Tholi Adugu’. Having found little to no success, the only kind of validation he gets is when someone reads his book, and his friend’s barber shop is one avenue to seek it. When his attempt to make the visitor read his book sees fruition, we get a shot of the two seated opposite each other; the visitor, now invested in the story, keeps his legs down and bends forward, indicating his interest in the story, and a proud Padmabhushan, having received a shot of assurance about his talent, crosses his leg. The shot, which communicates the character’s pursuit, is simple but remarkable. That’s something I could say about Writer Padmabhushan as a whole.

The first half of Writer Padmabhushan is a collection of beautiful and strong moments emanating from multiple themes—failure, desperation, guilt, and familial bonds. In fact, it even moves at a surprisingly fast pace, packing in multiple threads.

Failure and how it influences one is one of its core themes. The prologue of the film, set in a classroom, ends with the declaration from the teacher that girls have won a writing competition. The camera lingers on the disappointed faces of young schoolboys, the failed team, before the story moves to the present. This opening finds its real meaning only in the end b ut it sets up the stage for a character that’s battling failure.

From a screenplay perspective, just when you feel that the film has introduced an arc that might snowball into the ultimate conflict or a resolution, we learn that this arc ends soon enough and the writing is jumping to the next level. For instance, when Padmabhushan hits his lowest, having received criticism for his work and after feeling that his book is equated to trash, he breaks down and decides to quit writing until he is truly driven. Here ends a chapter and a new one begins. Bhushan’s life changes when he receives praise and love for a book he hasn’t written.

He knows he doesn’t deserve it but a part of him tells that he needs to leverage the opportunity. This interesting plot point—one that also adds a mystery layer to the narrative—pushes him into a confounding state of mind that he has to live in throughout the film.

This, solely from a writing perspective, makes the first half of the film, backed by endearing characters in the form of Bhushan’s parents (Ashish Vidyarthi and Rohini Molleti), an amusing and pacy watch. Even the rom-com bits featuring, which often come across as the blandest part of such lively films, are full of energy and charm. A scene set in Navrang theatre is an absolute scream and that too stems from the character’s nativity. Likewise, in another delightful scene, Bhushan vows to his mother that he won’t have food until he meets a writing deadline. When he learns that she is cooking chicken, the vow, naturally, goes for a toss. See, these are simple, relatable moments.

At heart, Writer Padmabhushan is a personal coming-of-age film that many of us are bound to relate to on some level; be it the longing for appreciation or the heartbreak when our efforts don’t yield the fruits. It has a quirky and pleasant vibe that we often find in Malayalam films. There is not even a single character with a shade of grey in this light-hearted dramedy.

However, once the identity of the person who instigated the change in Bhushan’s life is revealed in the big interval bang, the second half of the film becomes, for the lack of a better word, stale with no surprises to pull off and too little motivation for the character and to the audience. I antagonised these portions much more severely because the sheer pace and liveliness that were suffused in the first half, go completely missing here and it begins to feel like the narrative is wandering without an intent—one that was clearly present in the earlier portions—to going forward. Thankfully, it all culminates in a beautiful climax stretch that (like last year’s Tamil film, Don) comes out of nowhere and moves you. Don’t worry, there is no death here. The only tears to be shed be happy tears in the end. And the background score accentuates these moments fabulously.

Suhas wonderfully humanises what could have been a caricaturish character, with all his desires and vulnerabilities intact. Bhushan is a beautiful character, one enhanced further by his performance, imbuing tiny mannerisms that make the character look less like a protagonist in a film and more like a real person. Is there anything that needs to be said about Rohini? About how she effortlessly makes the love she has for her on-screen son feel so real every time, with every actor? It is a pleasant detour for Ashish Vidyarthi, who made a career in Telugu out of playing cruel and crude villains, as the protagonist’s lovable father. He is an affable presence but one cannot help but be bothered by the disconnect created by the dubbing.

Writer Padmabhushan is not a flawless film. It has some issues craft-wise (continuity errors and budget limitations) and writing-wise too (in the second half, where you know that pressing a character further would have answered many questions) but it is the kind of lovely little film that we often see in Malayalam and wish something like that was made here, in our world. Well, they made one. A pretty neat one. In fact, in his introductory voice-over, Bhushan tells about the love Telugu people harbour for films. Earnest films like Writer Padmabhushan definitely warrant it.

Writer Padmabhushan Gets Positive Response

As we reported earlier, the makers of Suhas starrer Writer Padmabhushan planned 6 days early premiere shows across the Telugu states.

The very first premiere of the movie took place in Vijayawada’s Raj Yuvraj theatre and as of now, the premieres took place in Guntur and Bhimavaram.

All these shows saw packed houses with families coming in big numbers. It was an emotional moment for the local boys Suhas and director Shanmukha Prashanth when the movie was screened in Vijayawada.

Writer Padmabhushan is said to have received a positive response from the families for all these shows.

The movie has many hilarious moments all through, wherein the last 30 minutes are said to be an emotional ride. 

It seems Writer Padmabhushan is not a regular family entertainer. There are several elements that will touch the hearts of all sections of the audience.

The early premiere strategy seems to be working for the movie like how it worked for the producers’ previous movie Major.

Produced by Lahari Films and Chai Bisket Films, the movie will release through Geetha Film Distributors on February 3rd.

In order to attract the family audience, they announced reasonable ticket prices. While the ticket price is 110 for single screens, it will be 150 for multiplexes.

Bookings are open now for the premiere shows of the movie in 4 theatres in Hyderabad.

Writer and first-time director Shanmukha Prasanth wants his audience to believe that Writer Padmabhushan is the coming-of-age story of its protagonist who wants to be one of the best writers in contemporary Telugu literature. In the process, he also packs in a social commentary and pulls a surprise that makes the film, soaked in fun moments until then, moving and emotional. He gets ample support from Suhas who essays the title character and Rohini who plays his mother, to make an imperfect film strike the right notes.

Writer Padmabhushan focuses on a middle-class family in Vijayawada. The protagonist Padmabhushan (Suhas) is an assistant librarian who has written and published his first book titled Tholi Adugu (first step). He daydreams that people will squabble to get his autograph, but in reality, his book has no takers. At his friend’s salon and at the library, he gives away free copies of his book in the hope that someone will read it.

There is a relatable quality with which Shanmukha Prasanth presents the world of Padmabhushan. The protagonist’s love for books is equated to the love that parents have for their children and the love that people of Vijayawada have for Telugu cinema. His father Madhusudhan (Ashish Vidyarthi) is a clerk in a registrar’s office and his mother Saraswathy (Rohini Moletti) is a homemaker. They amiably fend off a pesky neighbour and find immense happiness in saving a few thousand rupees a month.

The bitter-sweet tale of Padmabhushan and his family comes alive in everyday humour. The entire episode showing the family switching from an auto to a cab to make their presence felt at a wedding is an example. 

A twist in the tale comes when Padmabhushan’s uncle (Goparaju Ramana) and his daughter Sarika (Tina Shilparaj) hail Padmabhushan for his writing and forge a marriage alliance. The romance between Padmabhushan and Sarika is narrated with laugh-aloud segments, especially in the Navarang theatre scene. 

The mask behind which Padmabhushan is hiding comes off midway and the rest of the story paves the way for his introspection and redemption. A new character is introduced (Gouri Priya) but there are further surprises. 

At the fag end of the film, when a female character says no one ever asked her about her aspirations, it is tough to not tear up. Shanmukha Prashanth ties up the final portions with a scene that takes place in a government school in the opening portions of the film. He delivers a social commentary without making the narrative feel heavy or preachy. To reveal anything more would be a spoiler.

Suhas essays Padmabhushan with sincerity and shoulders the film through its shaky middle portions with his easy flair for humour. In a scene where he suppresses tears when someone is critical of his book, he shows us what a fine actor he is. After Colour Photo and A Family Drama , this film is another feather on his cap. Rohini stays in the background for most part of the film but fills the screen with warmth whenever she is part of a scene. She steals the show in the final portions.

Writer Padmabhushan is not perfect but narrates a heartwarming story with a large heart.

Suhas proved his mettle as the lead actor with Colour Photo and the film also bagged the National Award. Simultaneously, he is also doing character and performing roles like he did in Hit 2. He is now back as the lead actor with Writer Padmabhushan. Unlike Colour Photo that was just confined to OTT, Writer Padambhushan is releasing in theatres. This is something new and exciting for Suhas. The film’s premieres were widely screened ahead of the film’s release and created a decent buzz. Here is the film’s review.

Padmabhushan (Suhas) works as a librarian. But his aim is to be a successful writer. His first book fails to succeed. His life takes an unexpected turn when an anonymous writer uses his name and picture. This makes him a successful writer and also gets his marriage fixed with Sarika (Tina Shilparaj). Here comes the problem when the writings of the anonymous writer gets stopped suddenly. Padmabhushan who is on a mission to find the original writer learns the truth. What is the truth? How does it change Padmabhushan needs to be seen.

Performances

For underdog roles, Suhas is the best choice. And he indeed keeps up this reputation once again in Writer Padmabhushan as well since he nailed it. He is apt for the Padmabhushan role. He pulls off the emotional scenes with so much ease. At the same time, he also brings cheers when it comes to humorous scenes. Asish Vidyarthi is good as the hero’s father. Unlike his usual roles, Asish Vidyarthi is seen as a super soft character and he did complete justice. Rohini is perfect for mother roles and she does live up to that tag once again. Tina Shilparaj is fine as Sarika, love interest of Padmabhushan. Gouri Priya gets noticed despite a role with little screen presence. Goparaju Ramana is alright as Sarika’s father. All the actors did well.

Technicalities

Writer-director Shanmukha Prasanth chose a very thin plot point and weaved a nice emotional story around it. He made sure there is enough drama to ably support it. Screenplay is flat but it drives the story forward with a suspense element. Shekar Chandra’s songs and background music are complementing. Kannullo Nee Roopame is soothing. Editing is crisp.

Thumbs Down Weak Conflict Draggy Scenes

Writer Padmabhushan has a paper-thin point. It starts in Vijayawada with an aspiring writer struggling to get success but misses the path. Director Shanmukha Prasanth has not just made this the story of a struggling writer. There is so much more. It has undercurrent social message that is only revealed at the end. It is this climax twist and the message beneath it worked well for this Writer. This is where the writer in director scored the brownie points. For this story-telling, protagonist Suhas shouldered a lot with his natural performance. He once again delivered fine acting.

Writer has its own share of problems. It lacks strong conflict point. It is only the internal conflict of the protagonist. It is all about his struggles, lack of confidence on himself. The film appears to be draggy due to lack of solid scenes. The love story between the lead pair isn’t convincing enough. Why Sarika vouches for Padmabhushan needed better writing. This keeps us waiting till the end. But the end justifies. The strong emotion in the film drives the film. The parents love and the helplessness of the protagonist gets us connected. It is the twist that is saved till the end rescues the film. Songs may appeal individually but their placement obstructs the flow of narration. Suhas also does jig for songs which is funny.

It is not the regular commercial film one gets to see. No doubt, the logics also go for a toss. Despite all its shortcomings, Writer is passable for the emotions and its concept. It’s souls is intact which makes it a different film. It doesn’t work completely yet it doesn’t disappoint either.

Bottom-line : Book filled with some beautiful chapters

What’s it about?

Padmabhushan (Suhas), a budding author living in Vijayawada, currently toils away as a librarian so that he may be surrounded by books. He even borrows money to publish a novel, “Toli Adugu,” without telling his parents (Rohini and Ashish Vidyarthi).

Troubles for this aspiring author begin when his uncle (Goparaju Ramana) announces that he plans to marry off his daughter Saarika (Tina Shilparaj) to Padmabhushan. Saarika and her dad think he’s a famous author because they’ve read all of his books.

Padmabhushan becomes curious about the identity and motivations of the anonymous writer after learning that a number of works have been published under his name and that a blog is also being maintained in his name. There’s a shocking turn in store for him.

As the name suggests, “Writer Padmabhushan” is focused on authors and the craft of writing. “Writer Padmabhushan” could be mistaken for a romantic drama or a comedy at first glance, but it’s actually a sentiment drama. There are many lighthearted  moments throughout the film, but the ending is where it really shines. A powerful message is also communicated.

The film’s real strength lies in its message and its final thirty minutes. The rest is fairly standard fare or for that matter many sequences are subpar. Why does no one ever inquire as to the hopes and aspirations of a married woman? The film’s central message is this.

Suhas, in the role of an aspiring author, carries the story and brings the humour. In the beginning, his performance is the only thing that works because the rest of it just feels so dated. Many Telugu filmmakers have a penchant for making a writer seem like a minor celebrity who enjoys widespread adulation; this is, of course, absurd, given the near-zero prevalence of reading in modern-day Telugu society.

The days when authors like Yandamuri Veerandranath were household names are long gone. A Telugu author today can’t even hope to sell 100 copies of their book. So, the modern setting of “Writer Padmabhushan” seems jarringly out of touch with the world in which we now live.

Even if we excuse this angle, the proceedings in the first half are hardly appreciable.

Thankfully, the film’s new director, Shanmukha Prasanth, shows off his strengths in the final act, making for an interesting viewing experience.

Aforementioned, Suhas completely becomes his character. He does a fantastic job as the aspiring writer. Rohini as hero’s mother is superb. As a frugal Madhusudhan, Ashishi Vidyarthi works fine. Tina Shilparaj doesn’t get a lot of props. Sri Gouri Priya as the second heroine is okay. Ramana Goparaju is fine.

The film’s technical aspects and production value are adequate.

Bottom-line: ‘Writer Padmabhushan’ is a simple film. The final act makes up for all of the flaws. Can be watched for its final sweet and strong message.

Writer Padmabhushan Movie Review: A pleasing coming-of-age drama

There is a simple and beautiful moment early in debutant Shanmukha Prasanth’s Writer Padmabhushan that not only illustrates the protagonist’s character but also doubles up as a whistle-worthy mass moment. Padmabhushan (Suhas) an aspiring writer has self-published his first novel, quite literally named ‘ Tholi Adugu ’. Having found little to no success, the only kind of validation he gets is when someone reads his book, and his friend’s barber shop is one avenue to seek it. When his attempt to make the visitor read his book sees fruition, we get a shot of the two seated opposite each other; the visitor, now invested in the story, keeps his legs down and bends forward, indicating his interest in the story, and a proud Padmabhushan, having received a shot of assurance about his talent, crosses his leg. The shot, which communicates the character’s pursuit, is simple but remarkable. That’s something I could say about Writer Padmabhushan as a whole.

The first half of Writer Padmabhushan is a collection of beautiful and strong moments emanating from multiple themes—failure, desperation, guilt, and familial bonds. In fact, it even moves at a surprisingly fast pace, packing in multiple threads. 

Failure and how it influences one is one of its core themes. The prologue of the film, set in a classroom, ends with the declaration from the teacher that girls have won a writing competition. The camera lingers on the disappointed faces of young schoolboys, the failed team, before the story moves to the present. This opening finds its real meaning only in the end b ut it sets up the stage for a character that’s battling failure.    From a screenplay perspective, just when you feel that the film has introduced an arc that might snowball into the ultimate conflict or a resolution, we learn that this arc ends soon enough and the writing is jumping to the next level. For instance, when Padmabhushan hits his lowest, having received criticism for his work and after feeling that his book is equated to trash, he breaks down and decides to quit writing until he is truly driven. Here ends a chapter and a new one begins. Bhushan’s life changes when he receives praise and love for a book he hasn’t written. He knows he doesn’t deserve it but a part of him tells that he needs to leverage the opportunity. This interesting plot point—one that also adds a mystery layer to the narrative—pushes him into a confounding state of mind that he has to live in throughout the film. This, solely from a writing perspective, makes the first half of the film, backed by endearing characters in the form of Bhushan’s parents (Ashish Vidhyarthi and Rohini Molleti), an amusing and pacy watch. Even the rom-com bits featuring, which often come across as the blandest part of such lively films, are full of energy and charm. A scene set in Navrang theatre is an absolute scream and that too stems from the character’s nativity. Likewise, in another delightful scene, Bhushan vows to his mother that he won’t have food until he meets a writing deadline. When he learns that she is cooking chicken, the vow, naturally, goes for a toss. See, these are simple, relatable moments.

At heart, Writer Padmabhushan is a personal coming-of-age film that many of us are bound to relate to on some level; be it the longing for appreciation or the heartbreak when our efforts don’t yield the fruits. It has a quirky and pleasant vibe that we often find in Malayalam films. There is not even a single character with a shade of grey in this light-hearted dramedy. 

However, once the identity of the person who instigated the change in Bhushan’s life is revealed in the big interval bang, the second half of the film becomes, for the lack of a better word, stale with no surprises to pull off and too little motivation for the character and to the audience. I antagonised these portions much more severely because the sheer pace and liveliness that were suffused in the first half, go completely missing here and it begins to feel like the narrative is wandering without an intent—one that was clearly present in the earlier portions—to going forward. Thankfully, it all culminates in a beautiful climax stretch that (like last year’s Tamil film, Don) comes out of nowhere and moves you. Don’t worry, there is no death here. The only tears to be shed be happy tears in the end. And Shekar Chandra's background score accentuates these moments fabulously.

Suhas wonderfully humanises what could have been a caricaturish character, with all his desires and vulnerabilities intact. Bhushan is a beautiful character, one enhanced further by his performance, imbuing tiny mannerisms that make the character look less like a protagonist in a film and more like a real person. Is there anything that needs to be said about Rohini? About how she effortlessly makes the love she has for her on-screen son feel so real every time, with every actor? It is a pleasant detour for Ashish Vidhyarthi, who made a career in Telugu out of playing cruel and crude villains, as the protagonist’s lovable father. He is an affable presence but one cannot help but be bothered by the disconnect created by the dubbing.

Writer Padmabhushan is not a flawless film. It has some issues craft-wise (continuity errors and budget limitations) and writing-wise too (in the second half, where you know that pressing a character further would have answered many questions) but it is the kind of lovely little film that we often see in Malayalam and wish something like that was made here, in our world. Well, they made one. A pretty neat one. In fact, in his introductory voice-over, Bhushan tells about the love Telugu people harbour for films. Earnest films like Writer Padmabhushan definitely warrant it.

సుహాస్ హీరోగా నటించిన కొత్త సినిమా ‘రైటర్ పద్మభూషణ్’. కామిక్ ఫ్యామిలీ డ్రామా జానర్ లో షణ్ముఖ ప్రశాంత్ దర్శకత్వంలో వచ్చిన ఈ సినిమా ఈ రోజు విడుదల అయింది. మరి ప్రేక్షకులను ఈ చిత్రం ఏ మేరకు మెప్పించిందో సమీక్షలోకి వెళ్లి తెలుసుకుందాం !

రైటర్ పద్మభూషణ్ (సుహాస్) విజయవాడలో లైబ్రేరియన్ గా జాబ్ చేస్తుంటాడు. పద్మభూషణ్ తండ్రి(ఆశిష్ విద్యార్ధి), తల్లి సరస్వతి(రోహిణి) అతనికి ఎప్పుడూ సపోర్ట్ చేస్తుంటారు. ఐతే, పద్మభూషణ్ మాత్రం గొప్ప రైటర్ కావాలని కలలు కంటూ తొలి అడుగు అని ఒక బుక్ రాస్తాడు. పేరెంట్స్ కి తెలియకుండా అప్పుచేసి మరీ తన బుక్ ని పబ్లిష్ చేయిస్తాడు. అనంతరం జరిగిన కొన్ని నాటకీయ పరిణామాల నేపథ్యంలో పద్మభూషణ్ లైఫ్ లోకి అతని మరదలు సారిక (టీనా శిల్పారాజ్) వస్తోంది. వీరిద్దరి పెళ్లి కూడా ఫిక్స్ అవుతుంది. అసలు సారిక పద్మభూషణ్ ను ఎలా ప్రేమించింది?, ఈ మధ్యలో పద్మభూషణ్ జీవితంలో జరిగిన షాకింగ్ ట్విస్ట్ ఏమిటి ? ఇంతకీ పద్మభూషణ్ కల నెరవేరిందా ? లేదా? అనేది మిగిలిన కథ.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఇంట్లోని ఆడవారికి ఇష్టాలను, అభిరుచులను గౌరవించాలి అనే కోణంలో దర్శకుడు షణ్ముక్ ప్రశాంత్ ఈ సినిమాలో అద్భుతమైన ఎమోషన్ తో పాటు గుడ్ ఫన్ ను కూడా చక్కగా చూపించాడు. మళ్లీ అంతలోనే ప్రధాన పాత్రల మధ్యనే నవ్వులను కన్నీళ్లను మరియు అభిమానాలతో కూడుకున్న ఆత్మాభిమానాలను కూడా బాగా ఎస్టాబ్లిష్ చేశాడు. మొత్తానికి సినిమాలో వాస్తవ పరిస్థితులు.. అలాగే సగటు మిడిల్ క్లాస్ భావోద్వేగాలు బాగున్నాయి.

షణ్ముక్ ప్రశాంత్ రాసుకున్న కొన్ని ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్ బాగా ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. ముఖ్యంగా క్లైమాక్స్ ఎపిసోడ్ చాలా బాగుంది. నటన విషయానికి వస్తే.. హీరోగా నటించిన సుహాస్ తన కామెడీ టైమింగ్ తో అండ్ తన ఎమోషనల్ యాక్టింగ్ తో బాగా నటించాడు. సినిమాలోని కోర్ ఎమోషన్ని సుహాస్ తన హావభావాలతోనే బాగా పలికించాడు. అలాగే హీరోయిన్ టీనా శిల్పారాజ్ కూడా చాలా బాగా నటించింది.

ఇక ఈ చిత్రానికి మరో బలం అశిష్ విద్యార్థి కామెడీ. ఆయన తన టైమింగ్ తో బాగా నవ్వించాడు. అలాగే నటి రోహిణి నటన సినిమాకే హైలైట్. గౌరీ ప్రియారెడ్డితో పాటు మిగిలిన ప్రధాన పాత్రధారులు అలాగే ఇతర పాత్రల్లో కనిపించిన మిగిలిన నటీనటులు కూడా తమ నటనతో ఆకట్టుకున్నారు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

దర్శకుడు తీసుకున్న కథాంశం బాగున్నప్పటికీ.. కథనం మాత్రం కొన్ని చోట్ల సింపుల్ గా సాగుతుంది. ముఖ్యంగా ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ స్టార్టింగ్ లో కొన్ని చోట్ల స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ఇంట్రస్ట్ కలిగించలేని ట్రీట్మెంట్ తో స్లోగా సాగుతుంది. ఇక హీరోహీరోయిన్ల మధ్య ఉన్న కొన్ని లవ్ సీన్స కూడా రెగ్యులర్ గానే ఉంటాయి. దీనికితోడు దర్శకుడు కమర్షియల్ అంశాలను దృష్టిలో పెట్టుకోకుండా సీన్స్ ను రాసుకోవడంతో సినిమా రీచ్ పై కొంత ఎఫెక్ట్ పడొచ్చు.

పైగా కథకు బలం పెంచలేని లవ్ అండ్ ఫ్యామిలీ సీన్స్ ఎక్కువైపోయాయి. అలాగే కొన్ని ఓవర్ డ్రామా సీన్స్ కూడా సినిమాకి బలహీనతగా నిలుస్తాయి. మొత్తానికి షణ్ముక్ ప్రశాంత్ తాను అనుకున్న కంటెంట్ ను స్క్రీన్ మీద బాగా ఎలివేట్ చేసినా.. సినిమాలో కొన్ని రొటీన్ సీన్స్ ను ట్రిమ్ చేసి.. కమర్షియల్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ ను ఇంకా పెంచి ఉంటే.. సినిమాకి బాగా ప్లస్ అయ్యేది.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం :

ఇక సాంకేతిక నిపుణుల గురించి మాట్లాడుకుంటే.. దర్శకుడు షణ్ముక్ ప్రశాంత్ దర్శకుడిగా మంచి కథాంశంతో ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. అలాగే ఆయన రాసుకున్న క్లైమాక్స్ కూడా బాగుంది. సంగీత దర్శకుడు అందించిన పాటలు బాగున్నాయి. అదే విధంగా బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ కూడా కొన్ని కీలక సన్నివేశాల్లో బాగుంది. ఇక ఎడిటర్ అనవసరమైన సీన్స్ ని ఇంకా టైట్ గా ట్రీమ్ చేసి ఉండి ఉంటే, సినిమాకి ప్లస్ అయ్యేది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది. ఇక నిర్మాతలు పాటించిన నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి.

రైటర్ పద్మభూషణ్ అంటూ వచ్చిన ఈ సినిమా.. మంచి మెసేజ్ తో పాటు ఫీల్ గుడ్ ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్ తో మరియు కొన్ని కుటుంబ భావోద్వేగాలతో బాగానే ఆకట్టుకుంది. అయితే, ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ స్టార్టింగ్ సీన్స్ బోర్ గా సాగడం, అలాగే కొన్ని చోట్ల ప్లే స్లో సాగడం వంటి అంశాలు సినిమాకి మైనస్ అయ్యాయి. ఓవరాల్ గా ఈ సినిమా మాత్రం ప్రేక్షకులను మెప్పిస్తోంది.

Actor Suhas has come up with a family entertainer ‘Writer Padmabhushan’. The film is about the hopes of an aspiring writer to achieve success. From the day the teaser was released, movie is carrying good buzz. Let’s take a look at the complete review of the film:

A young writer Padmabhushan (Suhas) dreams of ending up as a famous writer someday. He publishes his own book by taking a loan of Rs 4 lakhs and is so passionate to make everyone read his book. He even drops free samples at parking lots and at a friend’s saloon. But no one shows interest in his book. Suddenly, Padmabhushan’s uncle Ramana Rao comes into the story with his daughter Sarika (Tina Shilparaj) claiming that they both are good fans of his work and brings in a marriage proposal. Padmabhushan comes to know that someone is using his name as a publisher. He remains silent and enjoys success with some guilt. The rest of the film is about Padmabhushan investigating about the writer who published a book in his name and how the twists in the story get unfolded.

Writer Padmabhushan’s story starts in Vijayawada, who lives with his middle-class family. Director Shanmukha Prashanth’s writing is fresh and we can see the struggle of a writer in every frame. The interval block comes with a twist and it was well handled by the writer. Kanna’s (Gowri Priya) character is one more addition to the story and the second half has less entertainment when compared to the first. Director has missed a few logic at times and has predictable twists and turns. The film manages you to have a smile on your face from the very beginning scene to the end. Some hilarious scenes add mileage to the film. The interval twist and climax portions are one more asset to the film.

Performances:

Suhas is best as always. He plays the titular character. He expressed the struggle of an upcoming writer with fine expressions. Padmabhushan’s father Madhusudhan Rao (Ashish Vidyarthi) and mother Saraswathi (Rohini) are one of the highlights of the film. Their acting is good and they enjoying the success of their son with pride is remarkable. The film is packed with fun, emotions, humour and sentiment. But, the chemistry between the main lead is not up to the mark. Tina and Suhas’s chemistry dint came out well, yet Suhas and Tina are good when we look at them individually. Suhas’ expressions and struggle for love made the scenes come out well.

Sekhar Chandra’s music helped the movie big time. Venkat R Shakmuri’s camera work is also plus point for the film. Shanmukha Prashanth has succeeded in a good film with good humor. Production values are good. On the whole, Writer Padmabhushan is the right mix of entertainment and emotions.

‘Writer Padmabhushan’ is a fresh story with simple fun moments here and there Plus a good climax. Casting and performances work in favor, on flip side twists are cinematic. Overall, a decent watch for families and class audience.

Mem Famous!, After Writer Padmabhushan

Lahari Films and Chai Bisket Films first combined production venture Writer Padmabhushan with Suhas ended up as a big hit for its budget.

They pocketed huge profits just with non-theatrical deals. The film did well at the box office and the production houses won the faith of audiences.

Now, the two production houses are coming together with their second movie Mem Famous! Besides announcing the title, they have also released the first look poster.

The title and the first-look poster show the creative side of the makers who unveils the backdrop of the movie. They indeed make a good impression.

This seems to be about a fun ride of a bunch of villagers who feel they become famous. The protagonist Sumanth Prabhas who is also the director is seen riding the tractor, with his friends accompanying him.

Mem Famous! is said to be very relevant to the youth of this generation. The film’s shoot is is nearing completion and the makers are planning to release it on June 2nd.

Kalyan Nayak composes the tunes for the movie that has cinematography by Shyam Dupati.
