Sample Essay Today, youth crime is rife. Theft, burglary or even murder are now committed by people of younger and younger ages. The aim of this essay is to investigate the factors responsible for the increase in juvenile delinquency and put forward a number of ways to appropriately punish young offenders.

It is observed that extreme behaviours are exhibited by most children from dysfunctional families. Without supervision from parents or caregivers, children’s extreme behaviours such as aggression, hostility or defiance are given free rein to develop in their later lives. In addition, there is a direct correlation between the lack of engagement in educational activities and serious criminal offending in children. Out of boredom, children befriend antisocial peers and will gradually copy their behaviours. Media also plays an enormous role in shaping children’s criminality. For example, games such as grand theft auto can desensitise younger players to extreme acts of violence and cruelty, encourage them to commit crimes while giving them the impression that it is morally acceptable to do so.

Imprisonment is often cited as a way to punish juvenile offenders. However, it is my view that this approach can produce extremely destructive effects. The youth can potentially be victims of physical or sexual abuse from older prisoners, as well as can adopt their negative behaviours. I feel that the better cure for young criminals is rehabilitation. Throughout education and training, the youth can realise their wrongful actions and be given opportunities to turn over a new leaf and transform themselves into useful members of society later in life.

There are reasons to explain why today antisocial behaviour among the youth nowadays has reached a historically unprecedented high and rehabilitation is the answer for this.

It has been pervadingly seen that the crimes by the hands of juveniles, due to various reasons, is seen a menace to society and more so, their conditioning. This essay discusses the causes of this and the possible solutions to cope up with this increasing plight.

It is generally observed that such heinous offences by teenagers, which are today hysterically expanding, are because of the clamorous and derisive environment children are being subjected to. The environment in which they thrive and prosper is somehow the most pronounced cause of such misdemeanour. Reportedly, the type of personality one develops is often predetermined by the parenting, and upbringing one goes through in childhood. Secondly, the prospering technology and its directly proportional deleterious side effects, which includes unsupervised and disproportional exposure to provocative and misleading content. Some online games promote burglary, while some might cause one to have a belligerent attitude. Misleading television shows and graphical content percolates in the innocent and malleable mindsets of the children, thereby causing them to commit such serious actions.

A possible remedy to this starts right away from the way children are brought up. Being extra vigilant while they are around and cutting the unnecessary vulnerability of being influenced in the wrong helps children a great deal. Digital usage is understandably ineludible. However, in the supervision of a responsible adult and the perusal of them, the risks and perils of children being guided in a corrosive way are palliated to a much greater extent. Schools should alarmingly and intensively monitor the children who are being browbeaten by the hands of bullies, as surveys have often suggested that those are the children who are usually more susceptible to committing a crime.

Therefore, it could be summed up that though it is undoubtedly a problem to society as a whole, by proper monitoring, parenting, and supervision, juvenile misconduct could be largely contained and alleviated.

There is an opinion that young offenders should be held accountable for their actions just as adults. While I find this view of some people justifiable to some extent, I also argue that treating both young and mature lawbreakers equally may have adverse effects.

On the one hand, I can understand why a young age should be no deterrent to dealing with criminals. If these juvenile delinquents were easily pardoned in place of receiving strict punishments as adults, they would not become fully aware of the serious consequences of their crimes. Therefore imposing appropriate punishments could prevent them from conducting illegal actions in the future. Besides, young perpetrators usually receive lighter sentences than they deserve, which is an injustice to the victims. In Vietnam, there was a well-known case in which a teenager murdered almost every member of a family deliberately, escaping the death sentence due to being a few months under the responsible age.

On the other hand, I am convinced that juvenile criminals should be tried in a different court from that for adults. Firstly, children are proven not to have sufficient intellectual or moral capacity to understand the outcomes of their misdeeds, so they lack the necessary conditions to be trial defendants as grown-up people. Secondly, when given a second chance, these underage convicts can have an opportunity to successfully rehabilitate and learn a valuable lesson. Thirdly, children can be negatively influenced by some bad role models, which should also be considered to give them a fair trial.

In conclusion, breakers of laws should not be spared of punishments, but I believe young offenders should be dealt with differently from adults.

In the wake of perpetrations and solemn offences which have only been exacerbated in the past few years, the contention of young people being prosecuted at par with adult criminals has been prevalent. Some opine in the support of equal punishment for all while some hold the viewpoint of tackling the two segments distinctively. I find myself agreeing with the latter standpoint and in the forthcoming sections of this essay, I shall be elucidating the same. People who argue that everyone should be charged with equal punishment, principally state that for equal crime, the prosecution has to be equivalent. However, for the young and undernourished mindsets that would be too extreme to execute. The juveniles who misdemeanour are not concrete and matured enough to distinguish between right and wrong. They majorly culminate in committing a serious offence influenced by what they perceive from their surroundings and hence discernment and prudence of judging often don’t get contoured to their maximum capacity in their case. Hence, prosecuting them equally as adult criminals and misdoers shall not be apposite.

The fragile and gullible adolescents if treated commensurately as adults, shall curb their development and ravaging all the scope of them treading in the right direction. Subjecting juveniles in a strict trial will not only deprive them of their chance and possibility to ameliorate but it may imperil them into adapting a personality that could be immensely diabolical in the later stages of their lives. Bestowing a mild laxity in the case of juvenile delinquency could treat them for their offences and hence letting them know the dire consequences of such peccadillos without being harsh on them that might defeat the whole process of their refinement.

Although people of a younger age could use it as a loop to evade the repercussions of the misdeeds, a threat of possibility couldn’t nullify the factual facet of their deterioration otherwise.

In conclusion, it could thus be argued that punishing everyone with an equal intensity under a similar set of charges could denude the frangible personalities of young people.

In recent years, crime rate among teenagers has increased substantially. There are a number of reasons to explain why this negative trend is emerging, such as lack of parental supervision, development of anti-social behavior, and excessive exposure of violent movies and I agree with the argument.

To begin with, it is true that many countries across the world have implemented multitude measurements in order to prevent juvenile delinquency. For example, they have passed and enforce the stringent laws and regulations so as to deter young people potential crime, created job openings. Furthermore, they have promoted businessmen to set up, allocated incentives, and offered tax discounts to those who create employment opportunities.

On the contrary, juvenile delinquency has appeared as one of the severe problems in the developing parts of the world. There may be a large number of root cause of this negative development. The most significant contributing cause is parental neglect, meaning that an increasing number of parents are not allocating time to supervise their children because of the fast-paced environment. As a consequence, an alarming number of adolescents are developing anti-social behavior and becoming a member of a criminal group. Moreover, watching violent movies excessively can be regarded as a leading cause. Finally, absence of stringent legislation can make a contribution to this detrimental development, such as corporal punishment.

In conclusion, while juvenile crime may not be a huge problem to some developed countries of the world, it has become a pressing concern to other nations. Hence, I support the argument.

Crime is a big problem in the world; many believe that nothing can be done to prevent it. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give your own opinion. Crime is unquestionably one of the most prevailing and worrying aspects of any society, and its prevention should be taken seriously. Crime prevention can be executed in various ways, firstly through a sustained honest presence in the community and secondly through international cooperation. A local presence by incorruptible law enforcement authorities may be costly, however, the long-term investment would pay dividends in the future. A safer region would encourage trade, investment and set an invaluable example for younger generations. For example, crime has dramatically been reduced in the Favelas around Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. This was achieved largely through the government committing large funds of money to station police headquarters in and around the slums. These financial expenditures greatly benefited the community.

Secondly, due to the large-scale severity and the global impact that crime has in some areas of the world, global cooperation is critical. Operating differently would incur significant financial losses and render any expenditure futile. For example, Somalian pirates in Africa have reigned terror amongst many ocean transport companies in the area. Only through large-scale international cooperation was policing the area possible. Therefore, crime reduction can be attributed to a joint effort between countries. To conclude, illegal activities are a costly and dangerous fact in the present global economy; however, large-scale government investment prevention is an attainable goal. Also, spreading the expense through international cooperation the resources invested can be significantly more effective in reducing criminals’ effectiveness abroad.

The Crime Rate in India IELTS Essay

In many countries, the amount of crime is increasing. What do you think are the main causes of crime? How can we deal with those causes? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Many nations are witnessing a drastic rise in crime rates. I think this is attributable to multiple reasons such as lack of education, unemployment, an inefficient judicial system, to name a few. Firstly, education plays a crucial role in shaping an individual’s character. It is education that makes us capable of differentiating right and wrong early in our childhood. Lack of basic education is one of the primary causes of increasing crimes. For example, in my country India, the vast majority of the population is illiterate. This has a deleterious impact on society as a whole because people turn to crime without any thought, they cannot comprehend what’s right and wrong. To deal with this issue, primary education should be made available to everyone without any fees and the government should take serious measures to make this mandatory for everybody.

Furthermore, the other main cause of the spike in crime rates is unemployment. As it is rightly said,” An empty mind is a devil’s workshop.” When people cannot find work, they have all the free time in the world. They think of crime as a shortcut to obtaining and possessing the riches of life, without any hard work. To tackle this problem, authorities should focus on increasing jobs and also introducing some compensation for unemployed people. Instead of such compensation, they should be made to do social and community work. Also, an inefficient judicial system is equally to be blamed. Failing to punish criminals in time is yet another reason why people are not afraid of committing a crime. To exemplify, India reported the cruellest and inhuman gang rape case a few years ago. It got global attention, there was a mass protest, people demanded immediate justice. Despite such a movement, it took over three years to come out with a judgment, and yet the criminals have still not been executed. In such cases, it is the slow and laid-back judicial system that is responsible for many rape cases being reported every single day. I think, if the government imposes severe implications on violating laws, crime rates will see a rapid fall.

To conclude, there is an urgent need for governments to focus on addressing illiteracy and unemployment problems, which attribute to the rise of crime rates. At the same time, it demands strengthening the judicial system so people fear the repercussions of committing a crime.

Increase in Juvenile Crime IELTS Essay

It is often thought that the increase in juvenile crime can be attributed to violence in the media. What do you think is the reason for the growth in the rate of juvenile crime? What solutions can you offer to deal with this situation?

It is considered by some that the high rate of juvenile delinquency is linked to the aggression displayed by the media. In my opinion, the violence portrayed by the media does play a key role in the escalating rate of crimes committed by youth; however, I also believe that video game violence contributes to this issue. Several solutions should be implemented to deal with juvenile crime. Young adults are highly influenced by the media; since the media often shows that heroes are violent and are rewarded for their behavior, they become role models for youth. In other words, young adults try to imitate the behavior they see believing it makes them “cool” to carry weapons and resolve their issues through aggression. Additionally, children who watch television become desensitized to violence and they come to see it as a way of life. Hence, vulnerable youth who have been victimized may be tempted to commit crimes as a means of resolving problems.

The impact of violent video games on adolescents is another important reason ascribing to the increase of juvenile delinquency. The atrocities and brutalities exhibited by many video games have destructive influences on the behaviour of teenagers making them more hostile. To illustrate, studies have shown that some video games can alter brain chemistry and have an effect on the development of children causing them to become addicted to the game and developing aggressive behaviour. Thus, when these youth go out in the real-world, some attempt to re-enact those games without thinking of the consequences.

There are a few effective solutions to the crimes committed by juveniles. Parents should supervise their children and monitor their actions. Adolescents should not be excessively exposed to violence. Mentoring and educating young adults about the consequences of their actions is also crucial. Another effective solution is to provide counselling and therapy for troubled children and teenagers who have had problems in the past and have a hard time dealing with them. All of the above points should be implemented to successfully decrease juvenile crime. In conclusion, supervising, guiding, and providing help for youth who are exposed to too much violence is vital to decrease the crime rate and for their overall well-being.

Levels of youth crime are increasing rapidly in most cities around the world.

What are the reasons for this, and suggest some solutions.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer

Over the last few decades, many cities around the world have seen alarming increases in the levels of youth crime. This essay will discuss the reasons for this and provide some possible solutions.

The first reason is connected with the family. In order for a child to grow up in a balanced way, it is very important that he or she is nurtured well by his or her parents. However, these days, it is often the case that children are neglected. This may be because of the fact that many parents in cities now both have to work so are often not around to give their children support when needed. Another factor is the increasing levels of poverty around the world. We have seen with globalization the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and this inevitably means that those who are poorer will have to resort to illegal means to get what others have. Of course, this will include the children in the poorer families.

However, there are ways to tackle such problems. Firstly, one of the ways to combat the problem is to have stricter punishments. Although, as discussed above, it can be outside factors that lead to crime, it is still important to have severe punishments to deter teenagers from crime. All too often, because they are young, the courts are too lenient. Parents also have to take more responsibility for their children’s actions. They too should be punished if their children commit crime.

To sum up, several factors have led to increases in youth crime, but measures are available to tackle this problem.

The topic of youth crime is clearly stated in the general statement of the introduction, and the thesis tells the reader that reasons and solutions will be discussed.

It is organized well, with reasons for youth crime discussed in the first body paragraph and solutions in the next. Each paragraph has two ideas and they are clearly signaled and well supported.

There are some good complex structures (In order for…, often the case that…, means that…,) and some good examples of topic related vocabulary (nurtured…, neglected…, illegal…, severe punishments…, deter…, commit crime…).
