Geetha Movie Review: A perfect amalgam of two beautiful love stories

With Geetha , debutant director Vijay Naagendra delivers a film that strikes the perfect balance between the heart and mind. He takes up a mature subject and deals with it beautifully, connecting all the ends in this love story that spans two generations. In addition to this, Geetha also talks about patriotism, friendship, love and family.
Akash (Ganesh) and Geetha (Prayaga Martin) are the principal characters of the story. The former is a software engineer, while the latter is a strong and opinionated NGO worker. Whenever they bump into each other their conversations turn into arguments. Akash happens to attend Geetha’s engagement with Prem (Vishal Hegde) where he meets Priya (Shanvi Srivastav), who ends up working with him in the same office.

It is revealed that Akash’s parents, Shankar (Devaraj) and Aarti (Swathi), are separated and it has left him with an unhealed scar. Priya, who befriends Akash, tries to reunite his parents, but all her efforts are in vain. Shankar then decides to reveal the actual reason behind their separation to Akash.
In the flashback sequence, Shankar (played now by Ganesh) is a college student and activist from Mysore, fighting for the revival of Kannada and taking part in the Gokak agitation along with writers, freedom fighters, and actors like Dr Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh, and Shankar Nag. Shankar is in love with Geethanjali (Parvathy Arun), and he also has a friend, Aarti (Shanvi Srivastava). In the aftermath of the agitation, the situation gets all topsy-turvy and circumstances force Shankar to leave Geethanjali and marry Aarti.
After hearing the story, Akash takes up a new job in Kolkata and meets his father’s former love interest, Geethanjali (Sudharani). But, at this point, Akash is himself in a situation where he has to choose between his good friend Priya and Geetha. Who does he choose as his life partner? The answer to this and what happens to the lead trio after, forms the rest of the film. The relationships in the film culminate with the evergreen song — Geetha Sangeetha — from the classic Shankar Nag film of the same name, thus sending everyone back on memory lane.
Despite sounding complicated on paper, Naagendra, who has also written Geetha , has handled the story and screenplay really well. Setting the love story in the backdrop of a sensitive issue like Gokak agitation is a clever idea, and it has been executed well too. The episode beautifully evokes a sense of patriotism and love for the languge among the audience. Dialogue writers Nagendra and Santhosh Ananddram deserve special mention, especially for the lines written for Gokak Chaluvali . The director should also be applauded for selecting the right cast, and setting the story in the 1980s. His treatment of the various relationships — friendship, love, marriage, family — in the 1980s and the present age match perfectly the times they are set in.
Ganesh is flawless in his dual role. He exceeds expectations with his appearance and acting both. Romance is cakewalk for the actor by now, and so it's his mature handling of the Gokak episode that particularly impresses. Prayaga Martin, who plays an independent woman, beautifully portrays a character who believes in standing by her decisions. Parvathy Arun, as the shy non-Kannadiga girl, who speaks more through her expressions, has delivered a good performance as well.
Just like Ganesh, Shanvi too has a dual role and she does justice to both. Devaraj and Swathi also play an integral role in the film. Music composer Anup Rubens excels with his background score and the patriotic track Kanadave Sathya Kannada Nitya deserves a special mention. The picturesque cinematography of Shreesha Kuduvalli elevates the mood of the film.
Overall, Geetha is a perfect amalgam of two beautiful love stories told almost flawlessly.
Geetha review | A coming-of-age romance that tugs at your heartstrings
Debutant director Vijay Naagendra manages to combine elements of the heart and mind, while also incorporating a sense of patriotism, in Geetha. He conjures up a mature subject and deals with it beautifully, cleverly connecting the dots in the love story narrated over two generations. Geetha deals with the topics of friendship, love and family during the 1980s and stretches over to the present day. Akash (Ganesh), a software engineer, and Geetha (Prayaga Martin), a strong and opinionated woman who works for an NGO, form the base for the story. Both of them keep having small arguments as and when they bump into each other. Incidentally, Akash happens to attend Geetha’s engagement with Prem (Vishal Hegde). There, he meets Priya (Shanvi Srivastav). They end up working in the same office and become friends. Akash’s parents, Shankar (Devaraj) and Aarti (Swathi), are separated, leaving their son in pain. Priya tries to reconcile his parents but fails. That’s when Shankar opens up with his son, explaining the separation.
In a flashback sequence, we see that a younger Shankar (played by Ganesh) is a college student and activist from Mysore, fighting for the revival of Kannada and taking part in the Gokak agitation along with writers, freedom fighters, and actors like Dr Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh and Shankar Nag.
Shankar is in love with Geethanjali (Parvathy Arun), and he also has a friend, Aarti (Shanvi Srivastav). During the course of the agitation, circumstances lead Shankar to leave Geethanjali and marry Aarti. The first half of the film connects with the second half when Akash takes up a new job in Kolkata, and meets his father’s former love interest, Geethanjali (played by Sudharani).
Akash also has to decide whom to tie the knot with — good old friend Priya, or Geetha, with whom he connects at heart? The major twist comes at the pre-climax stage when Akash runs into Geetha at the railway station. The end deals with how Geethanjali reacts on realising who Akash is, and how he, in turn, deals with Geetha. Does he express his love? The relationship of various people, who come at different stages, culminates with the evergreen song— Geetha Sangeetha — of the classic film, sending everyone back on the memory lane.
For a story that seems complicated, Naagendra, also the writer of Geetha, has handled the subject with maturity. A neat screenplay is what makes the audience relate to it, and connects the thread of the present and past relationships. With Naagendra in charge, it is teamwork that fuels the movie. Setting the love story in the backdrop of a sensitive issue like Gokak agitation is a well-thought idea, which is well handled too. The episode does bring a sense of patriotism among the audience, especially those who feel a love for their mother tongue. Dialogue writers Nagendra and Santhosh Ananddram deserve special mention, especially for the lines written for Gokak Chaluvali, that spark a loyal feeling.
The director should also be applauded for selecting the right cast, and showing the settings and placing the characters in the 1980s. He has drawn a thin line in terms of treatment of various relationships (friendship, love, marriage, family) in the 1980s and the present age, and it is to the point.
Ganesh has enhanced the director’s thoughts and makes no mistake. The actor, who comes across in two shades, exceeds expectations with his appearance, look, behaviour, body language, and costumes. The romantic side of Ganesh is more or less a cakewalk for the actor. He has handled the Gokak episode with equal aplomb, and one can see a sense of pride through his performance. Prayaga Martin, who plays an independent woman, beautifully portrays a character who believes in standing by her decisions. Parvathy Arun, who plays a shy non-Kannadiga girl who mostly talks through expressions and learns the local language through her relationships has put up a good performance.
Like Ganesh, Shanvi too has two shades to play and she doesjustice to her roles. Devaraj and Swathi have an integral role to play in the film, and Achyuth Kumar makes an important appearance in the love drama.
Music composer Anup Rubens has given importance to the background score. The songs get the right placement, and the highlight of the album is the patriotic track -- Kanadave Sathya Kannada Nitya. Cinematographer Shreesha Kuduvalli goes hand in hand with the mood of the film. Geetha is not your regular love story. The subject, which deals with two generations and explores various relationships, will fill your heart, mind and soul.

‘Geetha’ review: Ganesh’s love story is set in the backdrop of language rights agitation
With the ‘one nation one language’ pitch making headlines across the nation recently, Geetha could not have found a better release date. With the Gokak agitation – a successful language rights agitation in the 1980s that fought for the first-language status of Kannada – as the backdrop, this trademark Ganesh love story makes for an absolute entertainer, that is if you can ignore the slow screenplay.
It was surprising to learn that in the last 35 years, nobody took the initiative to make a movie on the biggest Kannada language-related agitation that took place in Karnataka in 1982. There are a few short films, but a movement of this scale deserves a full-length movie.
Akash (Ganesh), a software engineer, is raised by a single parent, Shankar (Devraj). He craves love and affection from both parents, but his attempts to find his mother don’t succeed. He finally finds a good confidant in Priya (Shanvi Srivastava), and ends up falling in love with Geetha (Prayaga Rose Martin). Twists and turns force Shankar to reveal details about his estranged wife and his lover Geethanjali (Parvathi Arun). The film then takes us back to the 1980s when the Gokak agitation was at its peak. Here, Ganesh plays a young Shankar and Shanvi plays his best friend Aarathi. Shankar is in love with Geethanjali but had to let her go due to the agitation. Post intermission, Akash ends up in a similar situation. But, Akash is not a quitter when it comes to love.
Half-way into the Gokak agitation, Karnatakadalli Kannadigane Sarvabhowma (When it comes to Karnataka, Kannadigas rule) asserts Ganesh onscreen, which was followed by non-stop whistles and hoots for over a minute in the theatre. By the end of the agitation scenes, all you have is goosebumps, a newfound love for the language and a faint memory about the love story. But again, the biggest irony is non-Kannadiga heroines playing title roles in a film that makes a strong pitch for Kannada and Kannadigas.
The movie has several layers of friendship, love, sacrifice and unrequited love that can be experienced through each carefully crafted character. Mysuru plays the perfect host for the 80s scenes and it is a treat to see Ganesh play Shankar than Akash. His dialogues about Kannada are sure to give goosebumps throughout. The movie is a great tribute to the almost-forgotten Gokak agitation. For those who were a part of the movement, the movie will be like walking down memory lane and is sure to open a flood of emotions.
The ensemble cast includes Ganesh, Shanvi Srivastava, Prayaga Rose Martin, Parvathi Arun, Devraj, Sudha Rani, Achyut Kumar, Rangayana Raghu, among others. The big names itself speak for the quality of the film. The cast is perfect and the lead female actors, too, have done a good job despite not being natives of the Kannada language.
It was also nice to see, for once, an overweight woman (Prayaga Rose Martin who plays the title role) play the role of a strong, independent woman. Geetha has a thyroid issue and is comfortable with her body. When her fiancé passes a sexist comment about her body and the way she dresses, instead of coming back as a typical Kannadati in a saree and big bindi, she dumps him right there. Geetha is one of the strongest roles written for women in a Kannada film in a long time.
Give Ganesh a love story and you’ll see him give the best output. Give Ganesh a love story laced with activism and he will prove why he owns the role. Both Ganesh and Shanvi have handled their dual roles with maturity. Geetha is not a candyfloss love story catering to youngsters. It is about love, unrequited love and how two generations experience love with a different set of emotions and expectations.
Rangayana Raghu impresses with his mannerisms and the comedy is not forced. Even the songs go with the flow. The title track is very hummable and leaves a soothing effect on the mind. Cinematographer Shreesha Kuduvalli’s visuals are stunning.
Director Vijayanagendra emerges a winner with a film that can cater to the mass and class. It is indeed very difficult to blend a love story with a movement without proper explanations. Vijayanagendra succeeds in his debut attempt. The only drawback is the length of the film.
Geetha , just like Shankar Nag’s love story from the 80s, is a brilliant movie in a long time. Don’t miss this one in the theatre.

Geetha movie review: In the \'memories\' of love and agitation!

The victory run at the box office continues for sandalwood after the enormous success of Kurukshetra and Pailwaan in the recent past with Geetha being the latest one to join the bandwagon.
Ganesh, who is popularly referred to as 'golden star' returns with 'memorable' love stories set in two different periods. One set in the early 80s and the other one in 2016! The two are interlinked with love. However, unlike the usual romantic drama filled with all the crying and painful awkwardness, this one is driven by Gokak Chaluvali, an all important movement, which marks the fight for making Kannada as the prime language in Karnataka.
Minus few glitches, Geetha is stuffed with good amount of emotional elements to keep the audience stay in love right till the end. One part of Ganesh is as an angry man with a mission as Shankar, who is deeply involved in Gokak Chaluvali, fighting for the language. In fact, the agitation has been forced into the plot, which makes very little sense considering that it leads to a romantic saga, continuing in the later part involving next generation lovers.
Taking into account that it is Vijay Nagendra's directorial debut, the filmmaker has worked hard for a well balanced show. About the tale, it opens up to a happy-go-lucky guy whose parents are separated since his childhood. When he is finally revealed about the actual reason behind the separation, it takes back to the times of Gokak Chaluvali attached with a love story.
The second part of the love story is churned in at Kolkata, wherein the protagonist finds out another connection from the past.
It is all about the different perceptions of love versus reality, and further the act of turbulence when tragedy strikes surprisingly. Geetha is also another trade-mark emotional drama from Ganesh, who has excelled in it since his biggest break in his career with Mungaru Male. The good news for the golden fans is that Ganesh is in absolute form in Geetha, and is easily one of his best in recent past.
The three pretty ladies, Shanvi Srivastava, Prayaga Martin and Parvathy Arun, too play a significant role in this one. Apart from an impressive performance in two different roles, Shanvi also sounds sweeter for lending her own voice for the character she has played on the screen. She does deserves appreciation for not just learning Kannada language, which is not her mother tongue but also for working on the diction and the minute details.
To wrap it up, Geetha promises some good memories to cherish in the end.
