Make an animated GIF from a slide show

With PowerPoint you can save a presentation as an animated GIF which can be shared via social or other digital channels.

Set up your presentation, complete with any illustrations, animations, and transitions you want.

Select File > Export > Create an Animated GIF .

The default quality is Medium . Use the dropdown box to change it to a higher or lower setting, if you prefer.

Select the minimum Seconds spent on each slide . Time spent can be longer, but not shorter, than this minimum. See more details below under "Timing the slides."

Select Create GIF .

PowerPoint will begin saving your presentation as a GIF, and it'll notify you when it's done. Processing time depends on the file size and quality setting. The end result will be a continuously looping .gif file.

Select File > Export .

In the dialog box, set the File Format to GIF and specify where the finished file should be saved.

Select Export .

Timing the slides

When you save your presentation as GIF, you'll specify the Seconds spent on each slide . This is a minimum duration that applies to all slides.

The default value for this minimum setting is one second.

If a slide in your presentation has animations or media that add up to more than the minimum duration, that is fine. The full length of those animations or media are recorded in the GIF.

If a slide in your presentation has no animations or media, or if they exist but are less than the minimum duration, the slide is recorded for that minimum duration.

Any timings you set for transitions between slides are additional and don't count towards the Seconds spent on each slide .

Details about the finished GIF

The saved file will be a continuously looping GIF. PowerPoint doesn't let you change it to a finite number of repetitions.

All animations, transitions, and media (such as video or GIF) on your slides will be included in the finished GIF file.

If your slides don't include animations, transitions, or media, then the frames-per-second (FPS) rate of the finished GIF will be the inverse of the Seconds spent on each slide setting you choose when you create the GIF. For example, if the seconds spent on each slide is 1, that would be written in fraction form as 1/1. The inverse (for the frames per second) would also be 1/1 frames per second. If the seconds spent on each slide is 3, the fractional form would be 3/1, and the inverse would be 1/3 frames per second.

If a slide in your file is hidden, it will be skipped entirely when the GIF is created.

  • By default, Creative Commons only is checked off. You only want to use images that are legal in your presentation so keep it checked.
  • Select the image you want to use and click Insert to add it to your slide. Narrow your search even more by using specific keywords. For example, typing office GIF will only show animated images related to an office.

How To Insert An Animated GIF In PowerPoint image 7

Notice the animated GIFs from the online option bring with them the image sources. It’s best to keep them in your presentation to protect yourself legally, even though they are under Creative Commons License.

How To Control Animated GIF Loops

An animated GIF is like a mini-movie. GIFs have a minimum of two images in separate frames. The number of frames determines the animation. While the length of the animation depends upon the number of times the frames loop.

Many GIFs, such as the bottom one above in the screenshot , are set to loop continuously. This can be very distracting in a PowerPoint presentation.

To limit how long the animation lasts, try using an online GIF editor such as ezgif.com or giphy.com . You can also try editing your GIF in CC Photoshop .

  • Let’s use ezgif . Click on GIF Resizer.

How To Insert An Animated GIF In PowerPoint image 8

  • Upload your GIF to the website or insert the URL of the image.

How To Insert An Animated GIF In PowerPoint image 9

  • This step will show you every frame used to animate the image and how long it lasts.

Edit The Animated GIF In PowerPoint

You can resize and move a GIF inside your PowerPoint presentation just as you can with an image. Drag one of the four corners of the GIF so that you don’t distort the aspect ratio.

How To Insert An Animated GIF In PowerPoint image 12

To rotate the image, drag the circular anchor above the image until it is where you want it.

There are several other image editing options, such as adding shadows, borders, and reflections. Some effects might affect the animation. Play the Slide Show from the current slide to make sure you didn’t cancel the animation.

Adding a Frame To Animated GIFs

To add a frame around an animated GIF you’ve created , click on the image and select Format from the top bar navigation under Picture Tools .

How To Insert An Animated GIF In PowerPoint image 14

As seen in the screenshot above, there are several frame options. Below are examples of a few of them with our animated GIF.

How To Insert An Animated GIF In PowerPoint image 15

Notice in the screenshot above that the white frame doesn’t animate. So, again, always check any image effects you add to an animated GIF to make sure you don’t break it.

How To Make An Animated GIF

Let’s use the same online free tool to create a GIF that we used to edit one – ezgif . Create your own animated GIF by uploading a sequence of different image files. You can use JPG, BMP, GIF, TFF, PNG, Zip image archives and mix different formats and sizes. Ezgif will convert them automatically for you.

  • Start by clicking Browse under Select images . Hold down the Ctrl key when choosing multiple photos.

How To Insert An Animated GIF In PowerPoint image 16

  • Once you have selected the images you want to use, click Open. Before creating the GIF, adjust some of the settings, including the frame order and animation speed. Don’t forget to set the number of times you want the animated GIF to loop; otherwise, it will loop continuously.

How To Insert An Animated GIF In PowerPoint image 17

  • If your uploaded images are not the same size, click Resize to crop and match them to the smallest one automatically. It’s better to make an image smaller than larger so as not to distort or make it blurry.
  • Click the blue button that says Upload and make a GIF! After generating the GIF, you can crop, resize, and optimize it.

Check out the other tools ezgif provides. They are all free to use and can help add some fun to your PowerPoint presentations. There are plenty of ways you can create your own unique GIF’s. You could even try turning your iOS Live Photos Into GIF Images.

Why Add Animated GIFs To PowerPoint Presentations?

GIFs are in-between static images and videos. They are smaller files, take up less space on your computer, and add a few seconds of enjoyment. Those few seconds can help re-engage viewers who might be losing interest. Adding a familiar or funny animated GIF will make your presentation memorable to your audience.

Spruce up your PowerPoint by adding some funny GIFs. Lighten up the mood of what might otherwise be a mundane presentation. They will also help your audience relate to you by making you appear more approachable. Don’t overdo it.

When used in moderation, adding animated GIFs to your PowerPoint will sprinkle something unique into your presentation and help your audience remember its content and message.

This wikiHow teaches you how to insert an animated GIF into a PowerPoint slide. While you can’t play back GIFs on the PowerPoint mobile app or mobile web browser, you can use the desktop program available for PCs and Macs to both insert and play GIFs.

Things You Should Know

  • Go to "Insert > Pictures/Online Pictures" and choose your GIF.
  • The inserted image will look like one frame, or a static image, but it will be animated when the PowerPoint is presented.
  • You can't use the mobile app to both add and play back GIFs, but you can do both of those with PowerPoint on your computer.

Step 1 Open PowerPoint.

  • The GIF you insert into your PowerPoint cannot be played on the mobile app or mobile web browser on Android or iOS. You'll only see the animation when viewing the presentation on a computer.

Step 2 Create a blank project or open a saved one.

  • If you chose to upload pictures from your computer’s local storage, your file browser will pop up and you’ll need to navigate to and double-click on your GIF to select it. You can filter the file formats that display by clicking File Type (or something similar) and GIF instead of "All File Formats." That way, only file formats ending in GIF will appear.
  • Although your GIF displays static on your slide as you edit, the GIF will display properly when you view the slideshow.

Step 6 Play your slideshow to see your GIF in action.

How to work with GIFs in PowerPoint

Carla Albinagorta

GIFs have taken over social media and the world. You can find an incredible variety of all kinds of GIFs for your everyday life. But GIFs also have great potential to be used in a more professional environment. Even if they don’t fit every single situation, if you learn to use them wisely, GIFs can really make you stand out. Here you’ll find how and why you should start using GIFs in PowerPoint.

What is a GIF?

First things first, so: what is a GIF? Unless you have been living under a rock, you’ve probably seen them everywhere. Social media platforms as big as Facebook and Instagram have an integrated option to send GIFs in messages. Even communication services like WhatsApp have also started riding the GIF wave.

powerpoint presentation animated gif

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format, which means it’s actually an image format. Despite its original intended use, nowadays what GIFs are more known as is as small “animations”. They work as lesser-quality, no-sound videos, which make them easier to share anywhere you like.

One of the most important characteristics of GIFs that distinguishes them from videos is that they loop. Since its format allows store several images in a determined order, it is possible to form a sequence with these and make a video clip. This highlight is exploited by modern GIFs, differentiating them from everyday videos. They also play automatically, unlike videos, where you have to press play for them to start.

Why you should use GIFs in your presentation

GIFs, like many other visual elements, are a great option to make your presentation unique. People are naturally drawn to movement, so having an “animated” element will guarantee that your audience gives you their undivided attention. The fact that they play automatically and continuously also has its advantages for a presentation.

For starters, they are not as distracting for the presenter. You won’t have to worry about when you should click for your video to start running. The moment you show the slide with the GIF, the moment it will start. GIFs don’t have sound, so you’re able to talk while it’s still playing. Unlike the case of a video; where you’ll have to stop everything until the video finishes, and it will likely ruin your timing. Since GIFs loop, your audience can watch it as many times as they need, without it meaning any interruption for you.

There is a reason GIFs are so popular in social media: they are funny. They invite the public to relate to them and to be part of the joke. GIFs can be an extremely useful tool when trying to add humor to your presentation. Probably a GIF is not alright for any type of audience, but when it works, it works. Think, for example, a casual team briefing. It’s all about knowing your public and knowing what will work for them.

There is one last advantage GIFs have over videos: their size. Videos embedded in presentations tend to fail or to be slow loading because of their file size. This can be a serious misstep, especially when you are expecting something to play and it doesn’t. When using GIFs, this never happens. They are closer to an image than a video in size, and this makes the presentation smaller and easier to share too.

There is a GIF for absolutely anything. So if you’re willing to try them out, GIF powerhouses like Giphy or Tenor will certainly have one that fits your needs.

What you can use a GIF for?

So, what uses can you have for a GIF in a presentation? It depends on your imagination. You don’t want to fill a slide with GIFs (mostly likely it will just be overwhelming and distracting), but a well-chosen GIF can help you convey your message.

  • A GIF can help you illustrate a point or to highlight an idea
  • You can use them to rotate 3D objects so your audience has a better look at a specific product
  • GIFs can be used as a background to spice things up and make a slide more eye-catching.
  • You can have them as a title slide to introduce a topic or a section.

As with images, the sky’s the limit of what you can do with GIFs in PowerPoint.

When NOT to use a GIF in a presentation

As wonderful as GIFs are, they should not be applied to every single presentation you have. Especially humorous reaction GIFs can be tricky to know when to add. Your boss will not take too kindly if you add a humorous reaction GIF in the middle of a serious sales presentation. A potential investor may not feel comfortable spending their money in a company that presents its product among jokes.

The best way to determine is you can indeed use GIFs in your presentation is to analyze the relationship with your audience and what you want to accomplish with your presentation. GIFs show humor, and humor is a great way to encourage team spirit and camaraderie. When people laugh together, they feel closer and create stronger bonds . Humor will make you seem more approachable and relatable. But laughter is not the best way to convey professionalism. For example, you probably want to show your more serious, trustworthy side to your boss, not necessarily your most approachable side.

GIFs can also showcase out-of-the-box thinking. GIFs as a background and to illustrate a point are usually versatile enough to be used in more situations. They can give a unique feeling to an otherwise plain presentation. Still, you need to be careful. Adding a GIF to every single slide will make the presentation feel heavy and burdensome. Pick what elements or slides you want to emphasize, and use GIFs only in those.

How to embed a GIF on a PowerPoint

Since GIFs are in theory an image format, it’s extremely easy to add one to your presentation. You can use your preferred way to add images to PowerPoint, and it will work with GIFs too. For clarification, when you add a GIF to your editor screen, it will look like a normal image. But when you put it slideshow mode, the GIF will be animated.

Just in case, here are three different ways of embedding a GIF in PowerPoint

1- Copy-and-paste

When you have located your GIFs (whether it’s saved on your computer or online), you can use the classic copy-paste technique. You need to use the right-click of the mouse > copy , and then right-click > paste in the presentation. Or you can use the keyboard Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V .

copy-paste

2- If you want to add a GIF you have shaved in your computer to your presentation, you can also use the PowerPoint “Insert” menu . You just have to pick the “ Pictures ” option, and then look for your file in the File Explorer PowerPoint opens.

insert pictures in PowerPoint

3- For GIFs that you don’t have saved, you can also use the “Insert” menu , but this time with the option “ Online Pictures ”. In the search bar, you’ll be able to look for whatever keyword you’re looking for, and then pick a GIF. If you want to look for only GIFs, remember to change the filters to “ animated GIF ” so you don’t lose your time scrolling through thousands of pictures.

How to make a GIF out of a PowerPoint

While mostly everyone has PowerPoint, converting your presentation to other media can help make it easier to share and boost its reach. PowerPoint can be converted to pdf, for example. This is extremely useful in case your audience wants a copy of your presentation, but don’t have the software.

Another option is to convert your PowerPoint to video . This is great because it allows you to keep the presentation as an audiovisual product, as it was designed to be consumed. But at the same time, it ensures that people will watch your presentation exactly as you intended it to be seen. As a video, no one can edit or alter your presentation, unlike what happens when you send anyone the presentation file as a PowerPoint. It also allows you to share it on different platforms, for example, YouTube.

So, why convert your presentation to a GIF? As with a video, it allows you to share your presentation on other channels you wouldn’t have access to otherwise. The fact that GIFs files are way smaller than videos is a really important advantage. The other main difference with videos is that you can make GIFs loop. For example, in case you wish to emphasize growth in an animated slide, you could only play it once in a presentation. With a GIF, you could have it repeat in the background constantly.

The process is very simple since it is pretty much the same to convert a PowerPoint to a video.

-First, you need to pick the slide (or slides) that you want to loop and copy them in a separate file.

PowerPoint to video

-Second, save that new file as a video. You should go to File > Export and then choose the option Create a Video . If you need more help, you can check out this tutorial on how to save your presentation as a video .

-Finally, you can use an online video to GIF converter. There are thousands on the internet, so just pick one and upload your file. The converter will do the rest! You just have to download it and you are all set to use your PowerPoint GIF as you see fit.

video to GIF converter

Now you can start creating some great PowerPoints. Microsoft offers an amazing number of possibilities to make your presentation stand out. It is up to you to use all these tools. My name is Aimee Leong, and I’m a PM on the Office Graphics team.

Have you ever had an idea for an animated GIF but didn’t know where to get started? With the new feature Export/Save As Animated GIF, you can now create your ideas in PowerPoint!

How it works

Making an animated GIF is easy – I’ll make two in this post! Follow along with my steps.

Open PowerPoint and insert your media. For my first GIF, I am creating a memorable email signature, so I inserted an animated sticker and some text that I liked:

Email signature created in PowerPoint

For my second GIF, I am creating a rotating gallery of images to share on my social media, so inserted a series of images on each slide:

PowerPoint with 4 slides that have an image of food

Tip: Adjust the dimensions of your slide via the Slide Size menu: go to Design Tab > Slide Size > Custom Slide Size

Choose your export options in the Create an Animated GIF menu. Go to File > Export > Create an Animated GIF .

In this menu, you can adjust the size/quality of your GIF, and set the seconds spent on each slide:

PowerPoint export options to create an Animated GIF

Tip: If don’t want to adjust the export options, it’s faster to use the Save As menu: go to File > Save As and in the Save-as-Type dropdown, select “ Animated GIF Format (*.gif) “

Click Create GIF.

An Explorer window will open – in here, navigate to where you’d like your Animated GIF exported to. Click Save and PowerPoint will begin exporting your slide(s) as an Animated GIF. Go to your selected folder to see your creation!

Here is my new animated email signature:

And here is my food gallery:

This feature respects all media supported in Slideshow (shapes, text, images, SVGs, videos, Animated GIFs, 3D Models, etc), PPT Animations and PPT Transitions.

A good way to preview your Animated GIF before export is to view your slides in Slideshow Mode.

Animated GIFs in PowerPoint: Your Tutorial

Looking for a way to liven up your PowerPoint presentation’s content? How about using a GIF? Animated images are everywhere these days. So why not use GIFs for your presentation content, too?

GIFs are guaranteed to grab your audience’s attention. They’re a fun and entertaining way to highlight your content and key messages. Plus, GIFs have smaller file sizes than videos , which saves you loading time. Learn how to create GIFs and insert them into your presentation.

What is an animated GIF?

GIF stands for graphics interchange format. This is a type of bitmap image format that supports up to 8 bits per pixel, allowing an image to have access to a 255-color palette. GIF files are perfect for images with a small color palette and, of course, animations. Also, the file size is usually smaller than JPEG files.

Most GIF files are animated. That is, they’re not static images, like JPEG files, but repeat automatically after a few seconds. Other GIFs only once and stop on the last image.

Why use GIFs?

GIFs are a great choice if you want to liven up your presentation and use movement to attract your audience’s attention. There are so many possibilities for using GIFs:

  • GIFs instead of videos → smaller file size and shorter loading time
  • Animated logos
  • Animated pictograms
  • Illustrating trends, data, processes

Animated GIFs

Always be mindful of using GIFs appropriately. Since GIFs always draw attention, they should be carefully selected so as not to distract from the content of your presentation . To use GIFs effectively, it is advisable to use them sparingly and strategically incorporate them at the right points in the presentation.

Ideally, GIFs should be placed at key points to emphasize important elements or visualize complex concepts. Additionally, it is recommended to use GIFs that have a clear connection to the message of the presentation and support the topic.

GIFs in Various Industries

GIFs can be used in a variety of industries and professional fields to enhance presentations and make content more engaging.

In the marketing industry , animated logos or GIFs can be used to illustrate trends and statistics. Additionally, GIFs can reinforce their brand message. In education , GIFs can visually represent complex concepts and support the learning process. Even in technical or scientific presentations, GIFs can be used to explain processes or procedures in a visual manner.

The versatility of GIFs allows them to be effectively used in diverse contexts. In casual and informal presentations, humorous or entertaining GIFs can be used to amuse the audience and lighten the mood. In sales or business presentations, GIFs can be employed to present products or services in an engaging way and pique the interest of potential customers.

How to create a GIF

So, you’ve decided to insert a GIF into your PowerPoint? Then you have come to the right place. There are several ways to create a GIF, which we will show below.

Create a GIF directly in PowerPoint

GIFs contain a series of images that are displayed in sequence quickly enough to create an animation. To create these in PowerPoint itself, you can use a transition or, as we’ll explain below, use the slide transition, Morph .

1. Before you start creating, you need to determine the shape and size of your GIF . If you are using a standard widescreen slide, the GIF will also adopt the 16:9 aspect.

2. Open the PowerPoint slide on which you want to insert the GIF.

3. Click on the Design In the Customize group you can set your slide size by clicking Slide Size > Custom Slide Size… .

4. Now insert your desired object, in our case an icon, by going to the Insert tab and selecting Icons in the Illustrations group.

Animated GIFs

Tip: You can find more professional icons from PresentationLoad for your business here .

5. Choose an icon and create a duplicate of the slide in the thumbnail view by pressing Ctrl+Shift+D (A Morph transition needs two slides with the same object).

Animated GIFS

6. Now go to the slide with the duplicate and make any changes you want to the icon. For example, change the position, the color or text .

7. Click on the duplicate icon and go to Transition > Morph in the Transition to This Slide group.

Animated GIFs

8. Stay on the Transitions tab and go to Effects Options . There you can choose how you want the transition to work.

9. Select Objects , as in our example.

10. Click Preview in the Transitions tab to see what your Morph transition will look like.

11. Now go to File > Export and select Create Animated GIF .

Animated GIFs

12. Select the file size you want and click Create GIF .

Animated GIFs

13. In the same window, you can also choose how many Seconds to spend on each slide .

14. A progress bar for your GIF file will appear in the status bar at the bottom. This normally takes only a few seconds.

Create a GIF in Photoshop

Looking to create your own content and use custom images to make a GIF for your key messages? No problem. Photoshop allows you to turn your own images into GIFs. This is how you do it:

For this tutorial, you need the Photoshop image editor and some experience using it.

1. Remember to use a tripod when taking pictures so that they are taken from the same perspective.

2. Modify each captured image the way it should appear later in the GIF sequence.

3. Make sure all your pictures have the same number of pixels .

4. Import the pictures to a Photoshop file under File > Scripts > Load Files Into Stack . This opens a window. Click Browse to find your pictures. Hold down the Shift key , select your photos, click Open and OK . Your photos will now be imported into a single layer file. On the right side, you’ll see several new layers. These will become the frames of your GIF.

5. Now it’s time to design a frame animation. To do this, go to Window > Timeline at the bottom of your workspace.

6. Click the arrow on the button in the middle of the panel and select Create Frame Animation . Your first photo will now be inserted into the timeline for you.

7. To convert layers into animation frames, go to the upper-right corner of the Timeline panel and click the menu icon. Now select Make Frames From Layers .

8. If your photos are playing in reverse order, go back to the Timeline menu icon again and select Reverse Frames .

9. Click under each frame and select how long it should appear for before switching to the next frame. A transition of one to five seconds is optimal.

10. You can also set an infinite loop for your GIF, copy, paste, and flip the images. Before copying and pasting, set the playback time so you don’t have to set it again for each copy. To copy the images, click on the first image, hold down the Shift key and click on the last image. Then go to the right menu and click Copy Frames . Then switch to Paste Frames in the same menu.

11. When the Paste Frames window opens, be sure to select Paste After Selection . Now you can reverse the frames.

12. Go back to the menu and click on Reverse Frames (as in point 8). Two identical frames should now appear in the center. Delete one of them so that your GIF doesn’t lag.

13. You can preview your GIF by clicking the play button at the bottom of the timeline window.

14. Now save your file as a GIF. First make sure the infinite loop is set to Forever (in the bottom left corner). Now select File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) to save it.

This quick guide can also be found as a video here .

Find animated GIFs on the internet

Want to insert a GIF into PowerPoint but don’t want to create your own? You can find GIFs on the web using PowerPoint’s online image search .

In PowerPoint, go to Insert > Pictures > Online Pictures… . or Insert Clip Art for older PowerPoint versions. Go to the search box and type animated GIF . Now you can select a GIF from the category you want.

Tip: There is a wide range of online tools and resources available that allow you to create and download GIFs. These tools often offer easy-to-use interfaces and various editing options to customize the desired GIF. Some tools also provide features to optimize the GIF file size to reduce loading times.

Additionally, there are websites that offer a variety of high-quality and royalty-free GIFs that can be used in presentations. Using such resources saves time and allows you to find or create engaging GIFs for your presentation.

How to insert a GIF in PowerPoint

Now that you know how to create GIFs, let’s show you how to insert them into PowerPoint:

1. Select the slide where you want to insert the GIF.

2. Now go to Insert > Pictures . This will open the Insert Picture From drop-down menu.

3. Select the file you want from one of the locations in the drop-down menu and click Insert .

2. On the Home tab under Insert , go to Picture > Picture from File .

3. In the window that opens, browse for the file you want and click Insert .

How to play animated GIFs

You’ve inserted your GIF on a slide and it still appears as a just a picture. Don’t worry, with just a few clicks, you can play back your GIF.

1. Go to the Slide Show tab.

2. In the Start Slide Show group, click From Current Slide .

3. The GIF file will now play in a continuous loop.

1. Go to the Slide Show menu.

Animated GIFs

Some limitations when using GIFs

Keep the following points in mind when using a GIF in PowerPoint:

  • GIFs start automatically when you switch to a slide. This means that it’s not possible to control playback with a mouse click, so keep this in mind during your presentation.
  • GIFs have only 256 colors , which can reduce the image quality for photos.
  • You can’t create transparent areas with a GIF.
  • You can’t crop a GIF.
  • Large File Size: To use GIFs effectively in presentations, it’s important to optimize their file size . Large GIFs can slow down loading times and impact the presentation. By reducing the color palette, using compressed images, and limiting the animation duration, the file size of GIFs can be reduced without significantly compromising visual quality. Optimizing the file size ensures smooth playback of GIFs and enhances the user experience during the presentation.

Conclusion : GIFs liven up a presentation

If you want something entertaining to catch your audience’s eye and attention , choose a GIF.

You don’t always have to turn to elaborate videos. A GIF is a great way to illustrate a process or even your key messages . And thanks to its small file size, you won’t have to deal with long loading times . You can also customize your animated GIF by adjusting its loop frequency however you like . Plus, they’re fun and easy to create!

Use an animated GIF; you won’t regret it.

1. Go to the Export Menu

To see how to save PowerPoint slides as image GIFs, you’ll first need to navigate to the Export menu. This is where you transform working files in PowerPoint into finished, shareable products to send across the globe.

To find the export menu and create your GIF for PowerPoint, come up to the File tab. You’ll see this in the upper left corner of your PowerPoint window. Click on File  and look at the list of options. Midway down on the left, you’ll see the Export button. Click on this.

Save PowerPoint slide as image

The Export menu opens, and here you can get to work creating your PowerPoint GIFs.

2. Select Your GIF Settings

On the left side of the Export menu, a list of choices launches. The third option down is the one you need: Create an Animated GIF.

Save PPT slide as image

Click on this. The Create an Animated GIF menu appears. Think of this as the control center for slide GIF designs in PPT. It’s here that you can specify exactly how your GIF looks and performs. It’s a simple process, and it’s one that you've got full control over in the app.

Notice the Quality drop-down menu in the center. By default, PowerPoint will export slide GIF animations in Medium quality. This indicates a resolution of 480p and 15 frames per second. By clicking on this drop-down, you can change the quality setting.

Including the default Medium , your options are:

  • Extra large (1080p, 24fps)
  • Large (720p, 24fps)
  • Medium (480p, 15fps)
  • Small (240p at 15fps)

GIF for PowerPoint

Choosing a higher quality setting results in a larger file size for your PowerPoint animated GIF.

The decision is yours on which option to choose. But the quality setting when you save PowerPoint slide as image GIFs is often determined by the size of your presentation itself. Keep in mind - the higher the quality, the larger the GIF for PowerPoint file size. If you've got a lengthy presentation, you may want to choose a lower quality setting than if you have only a handful of slides.

When you’ve selected your desired quality, you still have some choices to make. Optionally, you can choose to make the background transparent. Do this by checking the box immediately below the Quality drop-down.

Next, you’ll need to set the timings in your GIF. This is very important. Any animations and transitions that you've added to your slides are displayed in full.

Thus, if you set a timing value that’s lower than the duration of an effect you’ve added, the complete effect will still display in the slide GIF. This way, you can be sure that the animations you've added are visible and enjoyable by your audience. It's a good way to ensure the finished slide GIF that you export looks just right.

GIF on PPT

By default, the slide timing is one second. Naturally, you’ll likely want to increase this for reasons of readability. To do that, simply use the arrows in the time box. Or you can select the contents and keyboard in your own time value.

Lastly, you can specify which slides to include in your PowerPoint animated GIF. PowerPoint defaults to include every slide in the deck. But you can easily change this, by inputting different slide numbers in the two boxes.

Now, we’re ready to save our GIF on PPT design and share it with our audience.

3. Export the Finished GIF

With all your save PPT slide as image GIF settings chosen, it’s time to save it. This is how to save GIF image in PowerPoint designs easily.

At the bottom of the Create an Animated GIF menu that we’ve been working on, you’ll see the Create GIF button. Think of this as your launchpad to create GIF for PowerPoint files.

PowerPoint GIFs

To export your finished GIF, click on the Create GIF button. PowerPoint opens the Save As menu. Here, you can choose a destination on your computer to save your animated GIF for PowerPoint.

How to Save GIF image in PowerPoint

Then, give your slide GIF a name. Finally, click Save . PowerPoint gets to work, and the save PPT slide as image process gets underway. Depending on the size of your presentation (and your selected quality setting), this process may take a few moments.

You're nearly done learning how to save GIF image in PowerPoint slides. When the export process is complete, jump over to the file location where you saved your GIF. Double-click on it to launch it, and you’ll see it play.

The beauty of GIFs is that they animate on their own. Viewers won’t have to click through. Instead, the presentation plays automatically - at the speed that you specified. It’s the perfect way to create a shareable slide deck that’s easy for everyone to access.

StoryTelling Presentations

How to Add a GIF to PowerPoint

GIFs look really cool but they also look difficult to create – the truth is they are really easy to use in PowerPoint. Everyone expects PowerPoint presentations to be really professional and to have all the latest ideas and transitions but no one ever tells you how they create these impressive slides. One of the most common elements that are being used in presentations now are GIFs, these are essentially moving images that are essentially like mini videos, they have no sound and are usually played on a loop so they are perfect for really emphasising a short message or tagline. The good news is that they are really easy to create and use, in this post i will explain how to find them, create your own, use them in your presentations and give some best practice tips too.

Why Use GIFs in PowerPoint

One of the biggest mistakes people make with presentations is using content just because it looks good even if it is not relevant, it is important to remember that your presentation is to support you while YOU present a message so anything you put in your slides should add to your message rather than distracting from it. GIFs are a great way to grab your audiences attention and as long as the image is relevant they offer several benefits:

  • Tell a Story – If a picture is worth a 1000 words then a moving picture must be worth 10000, the right GIF can tell a short story or explain what you are trying to say without a word being spoken.
  • Attention Grabber – With the world now almost addicted to communicating in soundbites and short videos, GIFs fit this requirement perfectly so they instantly grab your audiences attention
  • Focus – GIFs bring a laser focus to a message by using moving images, text messages and repetition to ensure your message gets delivered exactly as you want it
  • Fun – They definitely add a touch of fun and break the monotony of death by slides

How To Add a GIF To PowerPoint

For a lot of people adding a GIF to a presentation might seem like a really complicated job, it is actually really easy and there are 3 main ways that you can find a GIF to insert into PowerPoint:

  • Find a GIF in the standard PowerPoint options
  • Find a GIF online using specialised GIF providers such as Giphy or Tenor
  • Use a PowerPoint Template provider such as ExpertSlides

1. Finding a GIF in PowerPoints standard options : This is your easiest option as it is searched within PowerPoint and takes care of the inserting process. The downside in my opinion is that the search options are limited and i you cant see teh GIFs moving in the search function so you have to insert them before seeing how it will look. I find this adds a huge amount of time and makes it really inconvenient, I dont use this option unless I want a really simple GIF.

  • In your PowerPoint simply select the “Insert” tab
  • Select “Pictures” then “Online Pictures”
  • Type your search and include “GIF” in your description
  • Once you have found the GIF you want simply click it to select it and click “Insert”

powerpoint presentation animated gif

2. Finding a GIF online with Specialised GIF providers : This is probably the most commonly used option as it is what most people are familiar with through using GIFs on their mobile phones, most mobile systems use Giphy or Tenor and both of these have really good online platforms. They both have an enourmous selection of premade GIFs available and Giphy have them with sound also which is a great feature.

  • Go to Giphy or Tenor websites and find the GIF you want (you can browse or do a specific search)
  • If using for a powerPoint – Right click the GIF and select “Save image as”
  • Save to your system as a GIF file type
  • Open your PowerPoint slide – Go to “Insert” tab
  • Select “Pictures” then “This Device”
  • Find the GIF file on your system and double click to insert it

3. Use a PowerPoint Template Provider : If you already use a professional Template system such as ExpertSlides then this is my favourite option. I use ExpertSlides (there are loads of others) for creating my PowerPoint slides as they have 1000’s of premade templates and lots of other features, they also have a section specifically for GIFs and I find the categories and search function really good. The main benefit is that it is already embeded in PowerPoint so the insertion method is really easy:

How to insert a GIF in Powerpoint

  • Open PowerPoint on the slide where you want to insert a GIF
  • Open the ExpertSlides (other providers can be embedded in PowerPoint but others are online)
  • Select the GIF section in the menu
  • Search for your GIF and click it to insert – you can then format it like any other image

How To Create Your Own GIF

If you are struggling to find a GIF that you want to use you can always create your own. If you want a really specific GIF or even something with a personalised message then you are going to need to create your own one using a GIF creation platform such as Giphy or PresenterMedia, this is a lot easier than it sounds and there are a few ways you can do this depending on what you want

  • If you want to use your own video file – Create an account with Giphy or Tenor and you can upload your video, edit it and save it for your own use. I found it difficult trying to figure out if I could add a message to the video so I am not a fan of this method
  • Create an account with PresenterMedia – you can have a free account or a paid one for more options
  • Go to the “Custom Graphics” section and select “Custom Animations” from the drop down
  • Select a GIF and then edit to add your own message – This can be saved and added to your PowerPoint

Top Tips For Using GIFs

Keep it relevant – I wouldn’t recommend getting too obsessed with having the right GIF as they are meant to be a bit of fun but you do need to make sure that it is relevant to what you are presenting. Either the image itself or the message in the GIF should be relevant to the message you are presenting.

Set it up correctly –  Once you insert a GIF make sure you adjust the it to fit your slides and make sure that you select the right play back format. Simply right clicking the GIF will give you options to format the picture. Here you can set the playback mode so it plays automatically or on your click and whether it loops continuosly or just once. These will seem liek small details but can really add to your presentation when done right

Check how it looks – Once inserted make sure you check how it will look during your presentation, it might look great on your laptop but if the resolution is too low and it is being projected onto a 3m wide screen the quality will look really poor and unprofessional. On the other hand if the file size is too big you might not be able to send your presentation to anyone if needed.

Don’t overdo it – When you start using GIFs you might be tempted to use them all the time but resist this urge and keep them simple, a well placed GIF can really emphasise your message but too many GIFs will just become a distraction

Practice, Practice, Practice – This is my best advice for all presentations but when you start adding in moving elements it is even more important to practice to see how everything looks and works when presenting

GIFs – To Use or Not

GIFs can be really interesting, they will engage your audience and keep them interested where standard slides fail, but can also distract your audience if not used well. Don’t overdo it and make sure the GIF you use emphasises your message.

They are really easy to use and and there are loads of premade options available so you can insert professional GIFs with minimal experience. Overall I would recommend that you have some fun and enjoy yourself when presenting and GIFs are a great way to add a bit of humour and engage with your audience

I hope this post helps to take away some of the mystery surrounding GIFs and if you have any questions, ideas or feedback please leave a comment below as it is always good to hear from you

How to Embed a GIF in PowerPoint: A Step-by-Step Guide

Adding a GIF to your PowerPoint presentation can spice things up and keep your audience engaged. Here’s a quick rundown: Firstly, find a GIF you want to use. Next, in PowerPoint, go to the slide where you want the GIF to appear. Click on the ‘Insert’ tab, then select ‘Pictures’ and choose the GIF file from your computer. The GIF will be inserted into your slide. It’s that simple!

After you complete the action, the GIF will be embedded in your PowerPoint slide. It will play automatically when you reach that slide during your presentation, adding a dynamic visual element that can make your presentation more engaging and memorable.

Introduction

GIFs, those little animated images we all love, have taken the internet by storm. And why not? They’re fun, expressive, and can convey emotions and messages in a way that words sometimes cannot. But did you know that GIFs can also be a powerful tool in your PowerPoint presentations? That’s right! Embedding a GIF in PowerPoint can transform a mundane presentation into a captivating one.

Think about it – a well-placed GIF can break the monotony of text-heavy slides, illustrate a point more effectively than a static image, and inject humor into your presentation. Whether you’re a teacher trying to keep your students’ attention, a business professional making a sales pitch, or a student presenting a project, a GIF can help you connect with your audience. It’s relevant because it caters to the visual learners in the room and adds a multimedia element to your presentation. In short, GIFs can make your PowerPoint presentations pop!

How to Embed a GIF in PowerPoint

The following steps will guide you through the process of embedding a GIF into your PowerPoint presentation.

Step 1: Find a GIF

Choose a GIF that complements your presentation content.

Finding the right GIF is crucial – it should be relevant to your presentation and not too distracting. You can find GIFs on various online platforms like Giphy, Tenor, or simply by searching on Google.

Step 2: Open PowerPoint

Open your PowerPoint presentation and navigate to the slide where you want to insert the GIF.

Make sure you have your presentation file open and ready to go. Navigating to the exact slide saves you time and helps you visualize where the GIF will fit in with your other content.

Step 3: Click ‘Insert’

In the PowerPoint ribbon, click on the ‘Insert’ tab.

This tab houses all the tools you need to add different types of content to your slides, including images, shapes, and, of course, GIFs.

Step 4: Select ‘Pictures’

Within the ‘Insert’ tab, click on ‘Pictures.’

This option allows you to add images from your computer to your PowerPoint slide.

Step 5: Choose and Insert GIF

Select the GIF file from your computer and click ‘Insert.’

Once you’ve clicked insert, the GIF will appear on your slide. You can click and drag to move it or use the corner handles to resize it.

BenefitExplanation
Visual EngagementAdding a GIF to your PowerPoint presentation can capture your audience’s attention and keep them engaged. Visual elements like GIFs can make information more memorable and enjoyable.
Emphasizes PointsA GIF can emphasize a point you’re making in a fun and relatable way. It can serve as a visual metaphor or illustrate a concept dynamically.
Enhances UnderstandingSome concepts are easier to explain with a visual aid, and a well-chosen GIF can clarify complex ideas and ensure your message is understood.
DrawbackExplanation
DistractingIf not used appropriately, GIFs can be distracting and take away from the main message of your presentation. It’s important to use them sparingly and ensure they add value.
File SizeGIFs can sometimes have large file sizes, which can make your PowerPoint file cumbersome and slow to load or share.
ProfessionalismDepending on your audience and the context of your presentation, using GIFs might not always be deemed professional and could potentially undermine your credibility.

Additional Information

When embedding a GIF in PowerPoint, there are a few additional things to keep in mind. First, make sure the GIF’s loop settings are correct. Some GIFs are designed to loop continuously, while others play only once. Depending on the effect you’re aiming for, you might need to edit the GIF before inserting it into PowerPoint.

Additionally, consider the placement of your GIF. It should complement your slide’s content without overshadowing it. Think of the GIF as an accent – it should enhance, not dominate.

Finally, always test your presentation with the embedded GIF on the device you’ll be using for the actual presentation. This way, you can ensure everything runs smoothly and make any necessary adjustments.

  • Find a relevant GIF.
  • Open your PowerPoint presentation.
  • Navigate to the desired slide.
  • Click on the ‘Insert’ tab.
  • Select ‘Pictures’ and insert the GIF from your computer.

How To Turn Video Into Gif In Powerpoint

Have you ever wondered how to Turn video into gifs in PowerPoint?

From inserting the video into PowerPoint to saving it as a GIF, we will cover all the necessary steps to help you create high-quality gifs.

Key Takeaways:

What is a gif.

A GIF, or Graphics Interchange Format , is a type of image file that supports multiple frames in a single file to create simple animations or image sequences.

Compared to static images, GIFs add a dynamic element to visual content, allowing for more engaging and interactive experiences for viewers. With their small file sizes and compatibility with most web browsers, GIFs have become a popular format for sharing short animations on the internet.

Why Convert Videos to Gifs in PowerPoint?

Creating GIFs from videos in PowerPoint gives you the advantage of enabling seamless sharing across different devices and platforms, as GIFs are widely supported and easily accessible. This makes it convenient for you to share your presentations online, via email, or on social media without worrying about compatibility issues.

Step-by-Step Guide to Turning Videos into GIFs in PowerPoint

After inserting the video, adjust its size and position on the slide. To customize the animation, click on the video, go to the ‘Animations’ tab, choose the ‘Animation Pane’ to manage the animation effects, and set the desired sequencing and timing.

Step 1: Inserting the Video into PowerPoint

To start customizing your animated GIF, you need to adjust the frame settings of the video. Right-click on the video, go to ‘Format Video,’ and under the ‘Playback’ tab, set the ‘Start’ and ‘End’ times to select the specific segment of the video you want to convert into an animated GIF.

Step 2: Trimming the Video to Desired Length

Upon clicking ‘Trim Video,’ a window will pop up where you can select the desired frame range for your animated GIF. Use the yellow handles on the timeline to adjust the start and end points of the video segment you want to keep.

Step 3: Saving the Video as a GIF

After selecting the trimmed video, navigate to the ‘File’ menu in PowerPoint and choose ‘Export’ from the dropdown options. Next, opt for ‘Create GIF’ to open the Export to a Video dialog box. Here, you can fine-tune the GIF quality, size, and duration options to suit your requirements.

Tips and Tricks for Creating High-Quality GIFs in PowerPoint

Start by using high-resolution images and graphics to maintain clarity and sharpness in your GIFs. This will prevent any pixelation or blurriness, ensuring a professional look.

Optimize file settings by adjusting the frame rate, duration, and compression to strike a balance between file size and quality. Experiment with different settings to find the optimal combination for your specific needs.

Use High-Quality Videos

Pay attention to the export settings in PowerPoint as well, ensuring that you choose formats and settings that preserve the visual fidelity of your content. By optimizing these elements, you can create GIFs with stunning image quality that captivate your audience with every frame.

Keep the GIF Short and Simple

Keeping your GIF designs focused on a single idea or message helps prevent clutter and confusion. Not overcrowding the slide with excessive elements allows the viewer to grasp the content swiftly and effortlessly.

Use Transitions and Animations

Add captions or text.

Include captions or text overlays in your GIFs created in PowerPoint to provide context, enhance storytelling, and reinforce key messages within the animated content.

Common Troubleshooting Issues and How to Fix Them

Encounter common troubleshooting issues while creating GIFs in PowerPoint. Here’s a guide on identifying and resolving these challenges to ensure a smooth workflow.

Visual inconsistencies, like unexpected colors or distortion, can be corrected by checking the original images’ resolution and aspect ratios for alignment purposes.

GIF is too Large

Consider resizing large images before inserting them into your slides to prevent unnecessary bloating of the file. Another helpful tip is to choose the appropriate export settings when saving your PowerPoint presentation as a GIF. By selecting the right options, such as reducing the number of colors or limiting the frame rate, you can further optimize the file size without sacrificing the visual appeal of your animated GIF.

GIF is Quality

Pay attention to the export settings when saving your GIF. Adjust the frame rate, size, and color palette to suit the visual complexity of your content. Avoid excessively large file sizes, as they can impact the performance of your presentation.

GIF is Not Playing

Converting videos to GIFs in PowerPoint offers a creative and engaging way to enhance presentations, share content, and captivate audiences with dynamic visual elements.

Final Thoughts on Converting Videos to GIFs in PowerPoint

By leveraging the capabilities of GIF animations, you can elevate the storytelling aspect of your presentation, capturing attention and conveying complex ideas with ease. Incorporating GIFs not only enhances the visual appeal but also helps in maintaining audience interest throughout your slides. Integrate subtle animations to emphasize key points and keep your audience engaged. Strategically placing animated content can transform your static slides into dynamic showcases of information, ensuring that your message resonates effectively with viewers.
