It sees the three friends head out on a bachelor road trip where each one of them will choose a surprise sporting adventure that they all have to participate in together.

However, all three of them have a specific reason for taking the trip, which plays out as they travel through the countries. The movie was a huge success at the 57th Filmfare Awards, where the movie picked up a year's high 13 nominations while winning the most as well with seven victories. It won for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor.

2 Pagglait (2021)

Pagglait was also a big awards magnet, as it picked up 13 nominations at the FOI Online Awards, including nominations for two songs and two lyricists. It won for one of the songs and lyricist, while also picking up wins for Best Supporting Actor and Best Dialogues. At the Filmfare OTT Awards, it was a little less successful, although it did win for Best Supporting Actor with two other nominations as well.

1 Lust Stories (2018)

One of the most successful Hindi-language movies on Netflix is Lust Stories , an anthology film with four different stories told by four different directors. It is a follow-up to the 2013 anthology movie Bombay Talkies , and itself was followed by another called Ghost Stories , all with the same directors. Each of the stories is named after their respective protagonists, and centers on emotions and relationships, mostly in the context of contemporary Indian society, and specifically with female sexuality.

Unlike many of the best Hindi-language movies on Netflix , this movie eclipsed the Filmfare OTT Awards and actually picked up two Emmy Awards. The anthology won Best TV Movie or Miniseries and Best Actress for Radhika Apte (who also starred in the Indian movie Raat Akeli Hai ) at the 47th International Emmy Awards, making it an anthology worth checking out.

A movie theater would probably be the best place to see “Kill,” a bloody Hindi-language Indian beat-em-up set on a train to New Delhi. The movie features a handful of visually dynamic fight scenes, choreographed by action directors Se-yeong Oh and Parvez Sheikh (“Fighter,” “ War ”), directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat , and shot by cinematographer Rafey Mehmood . “Kill” also features a threadbare plot and a few too many lulls between action scenes, so you might need to be seated before and focused on a big screen to see it at its best.

Thankfully, these blemishes aren’t so significant as to deflate the movie’s prevailing mood. You might still leave the theater wishing you cared more about Amrit (Lakshya), a one-man-army commando, and Tulika ( Tanya Maniktala ), a mostly defenseless woman on whose behalf Amrit creams a few dozen heavies. A rowdy audience and/or loud sound system will likely give theatergoers the extra boost needed to keep this helium-light genre exercise moving.

“Kill” still feels long at 105 minutes. Produced by Bollywood figurehead Karan Johar, “Kill” skimps on many of the flamboyant melodramatic touches that have come to define contemporary Indian cinema for Western audiences. Moreover, there’s barely a conventional reason to root for Amrit as he tears through car after car of indistinct baddies. He meets but does not sweep Tulika off her feet after she celebrates her engagement—to someone else. She wants to show respect to her father (Harsh Chhaya), who, like her fiancé, disappears too quickly to matter. 

There are additional supporting characters, like Viresh ( Abhishek Chauhan ), Amrit’s best buddy and fellow National Security Guardsman, and Fani ( Raghav Juyal ), a brash young kidnapper who gets hung up on Tulika. They’re ultimately neither so interesting nor as important as the sheer spectacle of watching Lakshya and Chauhan flip, tumble, and hurl themselves around various train compartments. 

Oh and Sheikh’s choreography gets a better showcase here than in their recent Yash Raj Spy Universe collaborations, like “ Tiger 3 ,” whose action scenes were more focused on action figure poses and computer-generated mayhem. “Kill” frequently delivers the sort of action one might expect from a movie with an action-verb title, though one sometimes wishes that more time was spent with the train’s many other anxious passengers.

In theory, you don’t need to worry about the generic setup that Bhat and co-writer Ayesha Syed provide. Then again, several dramatic moments, both major and minor, drag when they should coast to the next big sequence. A handful of action scenes feel light and even look monotonous, partly given the limitations of the movie’s primary setting. These set pieces tend to be brisk and engaging but aren’t so relentless or intense that they’re entirely disarming.

The brawl that comes about a half hour into the movie feels like a wasted opportunity, despite strong choreography, given the distracting presence of other commuters, who aren’t cowering in the background but rather in close proximity to Lakshya and his opponents. A handful of crucial moments, where Amrit rallies or remembers why he’s fighting, look more like well-mounted rehearsal footage. You don’t need to be a Johar diehard to notice that an extra dash of melodrama is missing here, though his most recent rom-com, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” is worth your time. 

“Kill”’s high-concept scenario is mostly a fun idea in search of better execution. To their credit, the on-camera actors look good when they work each other over, and the filmmakers do a fine job of not only keeping pace with their performers but also cutting their fights in such a way that you never have to strain your neck to see whatever’s just out of frame. The sound design also keeps a certain ambient tension up, and the spare use of music on the soundtrack keeps you wondering about what might be coming up next. Better yet, the blood and gore that erupts from a range of good and bad characters is also effectively surprising, at least on a moment-to-moment basis.

“Kill” often moves well enough that you might not care about the various bumps along the way until the end credits roll, by which point you’ll hopefully be too high on adrenaline to care. In thinking about why audiences should prioritize movie-watching in movie theaters, one shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss the pure lizard-brain pleasures of watching a no-frills crowd-pleaser deliver exactly what its title promises on as big a screen as you can find. Isn’t that what you crave from a good beat-the-heat summer movie, beyond air conditioning and concession stand treats? “Kill” tics off most of the essential boxes for a good popcorn flick, making it easy to resist but harder to pass up.

The 20 Best Hindi Movies on Netflix Right Now

A bollywood marathon is in order.

When I saw Hichki in 2021, my world expanded. After spending years consuming primarily English-language films, I was ready to immerse myself in the vibrant world of Bollywood—and it turns out I'm not the only one.

While attending the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, Indian film director Karan Johar discussed the growing popularity of Bollywood productions in North America. He told BNN Bloomberg , "I think, in the last decade, we've seen a huge, exponential advancement of our numbers...When we read those numbers for our films, we know that the reach is wide, it's gone beyond the diaspora, it's also now penetrating into international audiences."

As it turns out, streaming platforms have played a major role in the rising trend of Bollywood movies, now that audiences can enjoy them from home. And since I've already introduced you to the most compelling Hindi-language films on Prime Video , I'm turning my attention to the best Hindi movies on Netflix. From mind-bending mystery thrillers (like Badla ) to feel-good musical romances (like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ), keep reading for 20 must-watch Hindi titles to stream on Netflix.

1. ​​ Jaane Jaan (2023)

Based on Anurag Pathak’s book of the same name , this poignant and inspiring drama follows the real-life story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, a poor student who, despite insurmountable odds, pursues a successful career in civil services. I was impressed by Massey’s sincere performance and the soundtrack is phenomenal. But what truly makes this film shine is how it deftly tackles themes like resilience, friendships and maintaining one’s integrity while pursuing success.

3. Pagglait (2021)

• Director: Umesh Bist
• Run Time: 115 minutes
• Cast: Sanya Malhotra, Ashutosh Rana, Shruti Sharma, Raghubir Yadav
• Genre: Black Comedy, Drama

I’m a sucker for laugh-out-loud comedies that explore complicated family dynamics, and I can honestly say that this movie ranks high on my list. Pagglait revolves around a young woman who becomes a widow just five months after tying the knot. As her quirky in-laws visit her to offer support, she grapples with her inability to grieve her husband’s death. Worse yet, she learns a shocking secret about her husband. Expect brilliant performances all around.

4. Mission Manju (2023)

• Director: Shantanu Bagchi
• Run Time: 129 minutes
• Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Rashmika Mandanna, Parmeet Sethi, Sharib Hashmi
• Genre: Action Thriller

Set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Aman, an undercover Indian cop embarks on a deadly mission to expose a covert nuclear weapons program in Pakistan. Espionage fans will enjoy the suspense and high-stakes action scenes, but if you also enjoy a bit of romance, you’ll be happy to know that there’s some juicy chemistry between Aman and his love interest, Nasreen.

5. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

• Director: Farhan Akhtar
• Run Time: 185 minutes
• Cast: Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta
• Genre: Comedy Drama

Easily one of the best Hindi movies on Netflix, Dil Chahta Hai follows the lives of three tight-knit friends with vastly different personalities. As they all mature, each tries to pursue a romantic relationship, but this unfortunately causes tension between them. The film features honest, realistic portrayals of youth, and it will have you laughing from start to finish. (FYI, the storyline was inspired by Akhtar's diary, where he documented his trips to Mumbai and New York City.)

6. Zindagi na Milegi Dobara (2011)

• Director: Zoya Akhtar
• Run Time: 153 minutes
• Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif
• Genre: Romantic Comedy Drama

When Kabir Dewan, an architect, gets engaged to his girlfriend, he plans a three-week-long bachelor road trip to Spain with two of his childhood friends. However, one of them is a workaholic who can't seem to unplug, and the other has secret plans to find his biological father, resulting in a bit of tension between the trio. Add this to your queue if you need a funny, feel-good flick that tackles messy friendships.

7. Haseen Dillruba (2021)

• Director: Vinil Mathew
• Run Time: 136 minutes
• Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, Harshvardhan Rane.
• Genre: Romantic Thriller

Loved Anatomy of a Fall ? Allow me to introduce your next obsession. In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, Rishabh gets killed in an explosion at his home, and when the cops investigate, they conclude that he was murdered. His wife, Rani, becomes the prime suspect. But as she opens up about their troubled marriage, the police find it harder to get to the truth of what happened.

8. Madras Cafe (2013)

• Director: Shoojit Sircar
• Run Time: 120 minutes
• Cast: John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, Raashi Khanna
• Genre: Political Action Thriller

Set during the Sri Lankan Civil War, this intense political thriller follows an Indian Army Special Forces officer who travels to the war-torn coastal island to disrupt a rebel group. When he arrives, he crosses paths with a British journalist who's determined to expose the truth about the civil war, and he learns about a conspiracy to assassinate the former Indian prime minister.

9. Drishyam (2015)

• Run Time: 160 minutes
• Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta
• Genre: Crime Thriller

Vijay Salgaonkar's cozy, simple life is turned upside down when his adopted daughter, Anju gets blackmailed by the son of the Inspector General. When Anju accidentally kills him in an act of self-defense, Vijay must protect his family from the scary side of the law.

10. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

Calling all hopeless romantics! This sweet story revolves around 8-year-old Anjali, who, after losing her mother, embarks on a mission to reunite her widowed father with his college best friend (and Anjali's namesake), who was once in love with him.

11. Swades (2004)

Khan stars as Mohan Bhargava, a NASA scientist who returns to India to take his old nanny to the U.S. During his visit, however, Mohan learns more about his Indian heritage and discovers that his skills would be far more useful in his own country. When he also meets and falls for a kind schoolteacher, he starts to reconsider whether he should return to America.

12. Tillu Square (2024)

In this sequel to DJ Tillu , Jonnalagadda returns as Tillu, who leads a happy life after launching his own event management company. However, his messy past starts to catch up with him after he has a one-night stand with a mysterious woman. (FYI, there will be a third installment called Tillu Cube , and Jonnalagadda teased superhero twist .)

13. Dear Zindagi (2016)

• Cast: Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan, Ira Dubey, Kunal Kapoor, Angad Bedi

Kaira, an up-and-coming cinematographer, is stunned to learnt that the love of her life has left her and gotten engaged to his ex-girlfriend. To make matters worse, she loses her apartment and has no choice but to move back in with her parents. Things start to look up, however, when she meets Jug, an unconventional guy who helps her shift her perspective on life.

14. Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway (2023)

• Run Time: 144 minutes
• Cast: Rani Mukerji, Anirban Bhattacharya, Neena Gupta
• Genre: Legal Drama

Inspired by the heartbreaking real-life story of Sagarika and Anurup Bhattacharya, whose children were taken away by Norwegian authorities in 2011, the movie follows Debika Chatterjee, an immigrant Indian mom who resides in Norway with her family. When child welfare service officers visit their home and take their two children, deeming them unfit parents, they must fight against the Norwegian foster care system to get their kids back.

15. Don (2006)

• Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal, Isha Koppikar, Boman Irani

A street singer named Vijay is hired and trained by the Deputy Commissioner of Police to infiltrate a dangerous gang. His task? To pose as his lookalike and criminal mastermind, Don—who also happens to be the gang's leader. The edge-of-your-seat thriller boasts an incredible cast and great action sequences.

16. Om Shanti Om (2007)

If you're into Austin Powers , you'll appreciate the similarities in this plot—but don't expect any 007 references. In the film, Om, an aspiring actor, is killed while trying to save the life of his love interest during the '70s. However, three decades later, Om is brought back to life as a successful actor. When his memories start to return, he embarks on a mission to reunite with his first love—and catch his murderer.

17. Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999)

• Cast: Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Sonali Bendre
• Genre: Family Drama

This compelling drama revolves around Ramkishen and Mamta, the matriarch and patriarch of a large joint family. Together, they share three children—and Vivek, who is handicapped, is from Ramkishen's first marriage. Unfortunately, Mamta is bitter towards her stepson, and she schemes to cut him out of the family's inheritance, but this only breeds chaos and division in the family.

18. Tribhanga (2021)

Tribhanga follows the lives of three generations of women in the same dysfunctional family. When one of them, Nayan, gets ill and slips into a coma, her daughter and granddaughter decide to help her complete her autobiography—and learn some interesting thing along the way. This emotional drama explores complicated mother-daughter relationships, while also tackling heavier themes like mortality and child abuse.

Hindi Medium Movie Review: Hindi Medium is a relevant and topical film that makes you laugh and get emotional at the same time.

Despite Hindi being India’s primary language, many take immense pride in speaking English. The same is the scenario even with the education system where people do not mind going to any length to procure an admission for their children in an English medium school as compared to a Hindi medium one. This week’s release HINDI MEDIUM is an attempt to mirror the prevalent education situation of our society. Will it succeed in acting as a ‘medium’ in educating the audience or will it bite the dust, let’s analyze.

HINDI MEDIUM is an extremely endearing, light-hearted romantic story (written by Zeenat Lakhani, Saket Chaudhary) about a young couple with aspirations to move into English-speaking society for their daughter's sake. The film starts off with a day in the life of the Batra family, which consists of a boutique owner Raj Batra (Irrfan Khan), who has the knack to convince his customers that they are not less than Kareena Kapoor! Besides Raj Batra, there’s his wife Mita Batra aka ‘Honey’ (Saba Qamar), the very lady who is ready to walk any extra mile and go to any extent to get their only child Pia Batra (Dishita Sehgal) admitted in the best of ‘English’ schools in Delhi. After reading a magazine’s survey of the top schools in Delhi, the Batras start the admission process of their daughter Pia. After being rejected in almost all the schools, the Batras enroll themselves in a ‘counseling’ centre, where, they not just train you with the tips to crack the interview, but also take utmost care of your attire and grooming as well. Despite all the efforts, when Pia still fails to get admitted in Delhi’s top schools, the only solution that the ‘reasonably-rich’ Batras find is to fake their poverty and get Pia admitted on the basis of ‘gareeb quota’. While enacting their poverty, they come across their selfless neighbour Shyamprakash (Deepak Dobriyal), who is a living example of the adage ‘love your neighbor as you love yourself’. The bond of friendship become further strong when the Batras get to know that even Shyamprakash has applied in the ‘gareeb quota’ for his son in the same school as their daughter. Do the Batras reveal their actual identity to the ever-helpful Shyamprakash, does Shyamprakash ever get to know about his neighboring Batras’ financial reality, what happens of Pia’s academic future in the end is what forms the rest of the film.

When HINDI MEDIUM’s promos were released, the film managed to build huge expectations around it because of its strong storyline. The film, in reality, is an extension of what the trailers had shown. The film’s screenplay (Zeenat Lakhani, Saket Chaudhary) has been structured in a way that traces the parents’ trials and tribulations and the impact it has on their relationship as well as on their family. HINDI MEDIUM also successfully delves in various aspects of the Indian education system like the benefits of public school versus private school, the English–Hindi divide, the importance of English and the entire ‘experience’ of the admission process in a school. Though the film may seem to be based on a serious subject, the screenplay is laced with dollops of humor and light scenes. The biggest USP of the movie is its script, which induces an instant liking to it due to the relatability with the subject. What also works in favor of the film is the fact that the film’s makers have not attempted to become preachy at all anywhere in the film as they have kept all the characters as well as the situations as realistic as possible. The film’s dialogues (Amitosh Nagpal) are extremely effective, especially the one liners.

After having started off as an Assistant Director in the Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi Chawla starrer PHIR BHI DIL HAI HINDUSTANI, Saket Chaudhary plunged into direction with PYAAR KE SIDE EFFECTS, which was followed by SHAADI KE SIDE EFFECTS. This time round, Saket Chaudhary springs up a clear winner in the form of HINDI MEDIUM, a film that sees him and his skills improved immensely as compared to his last film. Full marks to him for making a film that successfully conveys a serious message in an extremely light hearted manner. Here, one should also give due credit to the film’s casting director Honey Trehan, for having handpicked all the characters. The film’s proceedings encompass human emotions in a perfect ratio of humor and seriousness. While the film’s first half is superlative, it’s the second half where the film’s context and pace dips. However, since the movie addresses a serious subject, the context of the proceedings could not have moved in the same humorous tone as the first half. Do not miss the scenes where Irrfan Khan and his daughter break into an impromptu dance during a party, Irrfan Khan’s salesmanship in his shop, his photography with his wife ‘exclusively’ for Facebook and the climax.

The film does have its share of drawbacks as well. The song where the kids of the public school are shown cleaning the premises could have been done away in its entirety, as it portrays the public school in a negative light. Even, in the climax, the song presented by the children comes across as very superficial, which just could have been avoided. Had the last song been replaced by Irrfan Khan’s heartfelt speech, it would have rightly conveyed the message and also would have made a strong difference. Irrfan Khan’s speech in the finale could have been vocally strong in order to attain the desired impact.

As for the performances, HINDI MEDIUM is a film which totally belongs to Irrfan Khan. Irrfan Khan owns the story in the same superlative manner as much as he owns his character in the film. The manner in which he uses his eyes to convey emotions is simply outstanding. His comic timing in the film is remarkable. With this film, Irrfan Khan only reinforces as to what a brilliant actor he is. On the other hand, the Pakistani actress Saba Qamar makes a strong and impressive debut in Bollywood with HINDI MEDIUM. Besides playing her part to perfection, she walks shoulder to shoulder with Irrfan Khan with her realistic performance. Besides them, there’s the ever-dependable Deepak Dobriyal, who charms you with his simplicity and vulnerability. His scenes are extremely powerful and they reflect the values and ethos of the lower strata of the society. The impact of his character is so huge and magnetic that, by the end of the film, you start longing to have a friend and a neighbor like him. While the academic counselor (Sarita Chaudhary) is impressive, sadly, Amrita Singh as Principal Lodha, comes across as totally wasted in the film. Mallika Dua is excellent in her part.

The film’s music (Sachin-Jigar) is situational, with two of its songs (‘ Suit Suit’, ‘Oh Ho Ho Ho’ ) topping the charts. On the other hand, the film’s background score (Amar Mohile) is decent.

The film’s cinematography ( Laxman Utekar ) is efficient. On the other hand, the editing (A. Sreekar Prasad) is decent.

On the whole, HINDI MEDIUM looks at the workings of the education system. It is a relevant and topical film that makes you laugh and get emotional at the same time. At the Box Office, the movie will be appreciated by the classes as well as the masses. Strongly recommended.

India box office: ‘stree 2’ makes it to top 10 hindi grossers ever.

Maddock Films' 'Stree 2' continues to break records as it enters the third week at the box office.

Closing its second week at the ticket windows, the new Hindi horror-comedy Stree 2 is now ninth-highest grosser of all-time among Hindi movies. Directed by Amar Kaushik, the film made more than $71 million at the global box office in fifteen days. Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurrana, and Abhishek Banerjee play lead roles in the film. Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan and Tamannaah Bhatia have special cameos in the movie.

Stree 2 is about a headless spirit attacking women in an Indian village. With a gross collection of $63.6 million in India alone, the movie also made highest second-week score for any Hindi film ever in India. Stree 2 surpassed the second week collections of the Hindi version of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2 , Anil Sharma’s Gadar 2 , Sandeep Vanga Reddy’s Animal and Atlee’s Hindi debut Jawan .

Stree 2 released in theatres on August 15 - getting an extra leverage of the extended weekend in India. The country celebrated Independence Day on Thursday, and the festival of Rakshabandhan on Monday. A national holiday on August 15, and partial ones on August 16 and August 19 gave the Hindi movie a five-day weekend. It made a global opening of $9.1 million, and the collections rose to $14 million in two days.

In India, the film collected $11.9 million in two days and $20.5 million in three days. The three-day worldwide gross collections of Stree 2 stood at $22.4 million. By the end of the first weekend, the Bollywood movie had made $32.8 million in India and $38.9 million globally. It managed to score decent numbers across the weekdays and grossed a global total of $46.3 million in a week. In India, the film made $39.2 million in seven days at the ticket windows.

Stree 2: Box office records

Prior to the release, trade experts anticipated that Stree 2 would be a hit film, and the advance bookings were quite telling. However, no one imagined the film would become such a huge box office success and also break many previous box office records.

Earlier, Stree 2 toppled Siddharth Anand’s Fighter and became the highest-opening Hindi film of 2024.

Second-highest opening Hindi film ever

Trailing behind Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone-starrer Jawan , Stree 2 also made it as the second-highest opening Hindi film ever.

The Maddock Films’ Horror Universe

The production Maddock Films started it all with the 2018 horror-comedy Stree. Featuring Rao, Kapoor, Tripathi, Banerjee and Khurrana in lead roles, the film took sharp digs at patriarchal mindset and society. A female spirit abducted lusty men in Stree. The producers went ahead and made two more horror-comedies - Bhediya and Munjya - the latter one proved to be a surprise hit at the box office this year. Stree 2 is the fourth movie in this universe

A sequel to the 2018 movie, Stree 2 shows young village boy Vicky (Rao) set to face yet another devil - the headless spirit that threatens every woman with a modern perspective. Turning around the perspective, Stree 2 villain chases women with modern outlook. Interestingly, Stree 2 emphasizes on the importance of the masculine and feminine joining forces to ensure gender balance in the narrative.
