Animals Testing Essay - Model Answer

Issues related to animal experimentation are frequently discussed these days, particularly in the media. It is often said that animals should not be used in testing because it is cruel and unnecessary. This essay will examine the arguments for and against animal testing. 

On the one hand, the people who support these experiments say that we must do tests on animals. For instance, many famous lifesaving drugs were invented in this way, and animal experiments may help us to find more cures in the future. Indeed, possibly even a cure for cancer and AIDS. Furthermore, the animals which are used are not usually wild but are bred especially for experiments. Therefore, they believe it is not true that animal experiments are responsible for reducing the number of wild animals on the planet. 

On the other hand, others feel that there are good arguments against this. First and foremost, animal experiments are unkind and cause animals a lot of pain. In addition, they feel that many tests are not really important, and in fact animals are not only used to test new medicines but also new cosmetics, which could be tested on humans instead. Another issue is that sometimes an experiment on animals gives us the wrong result because animals’ bodies are not exactly the same as our own. As a consequence, this testing may not be providing the safety that its proponents claim.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion, on balance, that the benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages, and testing on animals should not continue. Although it may improve the lives of humans, it is not fair that animals should suffer in order to achieve this.

On Sept. 10, the Environmental Protection Agency said it would move away from requiring the testing of potentially harmful chemicals on animals, a decision that was hailed by animal rights groups but criticized by environmentalists and researchers who said the practice was necessary to rigorously safeguard human health.

In “ E.P.A. Says It Will Drastically Reduce Animal Testing ,” Mihir Zaveri, Mariel Padilla and Jaclyn Peiser write about the decision:

The E.P.A. Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the agency plans to reduce the amount of studies that involve mammal testing by 30 percent by 2025, and to eliminate the studies entirely by 2035, though some may still be approved on a case-by-case basis. The agency said it would also invest $4.25 million in projects at four universities and a medical center that are developing alternate ways of testing chemicals that do not involve animals. “We can protect human health and the environment by using cutting-edge, ethically sound science in our decision-making that efficiently and cost-effectively evaluates potential effects without animal testing,” Mr. Wheeler said in a memo announcing the changes. The E.P.A. has for decades required testing on a variety of animals — including rats, dogs, birds and fish — to gauge their toxicity before the chemicals can be bought, sold or used in the environment.

Animal experiments are cruel, unreliable, and even dangerous

The harmful use of animals in experiments is not only cruel but also often ineffective. Animals do not naturally get many of the diseases that humans do, such as major types of heart disease, many types of cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s disease or schizophrenia. Instead, signs of these diseases are artificially induced in animals in laboratories in an attempt to mimic the human disease. Yet, such experiments belittle the complexity of human conditions which are affected by wide-ranging variables such as genetics, socio-economic factors, deeply-rooted psychological issues and different personal experiences.

It is not surprising to find that treatments showing “promise” in animals rarely work in humans.  Not only are time, money and animals’ lives being wasted (with a huge amount of suffering), but effective treatments are being mistakenly discarded and harmful treatments are getting through. The support for animal testing is based largely on anecdote and is not backed up, we believe, by the scientific evidence that is out there.

Despite many decades of studying cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, stroke and AIDS in animals, none of these conditions have reliable and fully effective cures and some don’t even have effective treatments.

The history of cancer research has been the history of curing cancer in the mouse. We have cured mice of cancer for decades and it simply didn’t work in human beings.

Unreliable animal testing

• 92% of drugs fail in human clinical trials despite appearing safe and effective in animal tests, often on safety grounds or because they do not work.
• Urology drugs have the lowest success rate (only 4% are approved after entering clinical trials) followed by heart drugs (5% success rate), cancer drugs (5% success rate) and neurology drugs (6% success rate).
• Our research has shown that using dogs, rats, mice and rabbits to test whether or not a drug will be safe for humans provides statistically little useful insight. Our study also revealed that drug tests on monkeys are just as poor as those using any other species in predicting the effects on humans.
• A recent study found that out of 93 dangerous drug side effects, only 19% could have been predicted by animal tests.
• Another study showed that over 1,000 potential stroke treatments have been “successful” in animal tests, but of the approximately 10% that progressed to human trials, none worked sufficiently well in humans.
• One review of 101 high impact discoveries based on basic animal experiments found that only 5% resulted in approved treatments within 20 years. More recently, we conducted an analysis of 27 key animal-based ‘breakthroughs ’ that had been reported by the UK press 25 years earlier. Mirroring the earlier study, we found only one of the 27 “breakthroughs” had been realised in humans, and that was subject to several caveats.

Dangerous animal testing

• Vioxx, a drug used to treat arthritis, was found to be safe when tested in monkeys (and five other animal species) but has been estimated to have caused around 140,000 heart attacks and strokes and 60,000 deaths worldwide.
• Human volunteers testing a new monoclonal antibody treatment (TGN1412) at Northwick Park Hospital, UK, in 2006 suffered a severe immune reaction and nearly died. Testing on monkeys at 500 times the dose given to the volunteers totally failed to predict the dangerous side effects.
• A drug trial in France resulted in the death of one volunteer and left four others severely brain damaged in 2016. The drug, which was intended to treat a wide range of conditions including anxiety and Parkinson’s disease, was tested in four different species of animals (mice, rats, dogs and monkeys) before being given to humans.
• A clinical trial of Hepatitis B drug fialuridine had to be stopped because it caused severe liver damage in seven patients, five of whom died. It had been tested on animals first.

Animals are different

• Animals do not get many of the diseases we do, such as Parkinson’s disease, major types of heart disease, many types of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, HIV or schizophrenia.
• An analysis of over 100 mouse cell types found that only 50% of the DNA responsible for regulating genes in mice could be matched with human DNA.
• The most commonly used species of monkey to test drug safety (Cynomolgous macaque monkeys) is resistant to doses of paracetamol (acetaminophen) that would be deadly in humans.
• Chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados and macadamia nuts are harmless in humans but toxic to dogs.
• Aspirin is toxic to many animals and would not be on our pharmacy shelves if it had been tested according to current animal testing standards.

As science develops with technology people need to stand up and fight for the rights of these animals, which will be condemned to the path of death where they have no voice to determine how they will be treated. This paper seeks to bring out the negative issues associated with animal testing. Animal testing should be abolished as it is immoral, against animal rights and does not provide reliable results.

Over the time, it has been proofed that animals react differently to various drugs among themselves which makes it very hard to argue with certainty the effects of the drug to the body. Incidentally, the bodies of animals are different from that of human beings, given that animals can take some kind of substances which when eaten by human beings make them sick (Earie, 2007).

Based on this fact, animals tend to react to drugs in a different way which significantly varies from the way human being will react to the very same drug. This has been proofed in many instances where a drug which has been taught to be safe for human use having been tested on thousands has ended up being detrimental to human beings causing some deformities or even death when tried on human beings (Hursthouse, 2000).

When animals are used to test drugs, the main idea is not to verify whether the drugs are safe to be used by human beings in treating the specific diseases that they are meant for but rather to test whether they can be taken a step further and be tested on human beings.

This means that human beings are still put on experiment using these drugs, and end up suffering various abnormalities or even loose their lives, to ascertain whether they have any effects even after killing numerous animals in the name of testing the safety of the drugs. It is a pity that during this animal tests, there is no antidotes prepared so incase there is any potential harm to human beings when this drugs eventually get to be experimented on them there is no way this injuries can be taken care of (Earie, 2007).

Supporters of animal testing argue that it is morally correct to use animals in testing of drugs than to use human beings which would amount to having an intention to commit murder.

On the contrary, millions of animals are subjected to painful procedures on the cruelest ways that they can without caring to provide even an antidote to the animals making the whole process uncouth (Fleming & Worden, 2004). On top of that, the idea of infecting the animals with diseases or other disorders which one is not sure of getting a cure is in itself an act of intentional killing which is not morally correct by any definition that one might want to give to morality.

In conjunction with that, it is against morals for one to cause suffering intentionally which is exactly what is done when animals are subjected to the pains that result from the conditions they are compelled to by people who just want to proof their ingenuity (Fleming & Worden, 2004).

With the development of technology there has been discovery of various scientific ways of generating, experimenting and even testing of drugs without necessarily involving the whole animal. The various ways that may be used include tissue and cell culture system, cloned human skin cells and computer or even mathematical models among others which do not cause suffering to animals and at the same time produce perfect results.

It should also be noted that this new methods can use human cells and therefore, giving reliable information about the effects of this drugs to human beings rather than using animals belonging to a different species for experiments whose results will be applied to another species (Hursthouse, 2000).

In today’s world, we are all aware about existence of basic rights which should not be violated at all costs. Animal rights have also been a subject of discussion for a long time now, but a general agreement is that animals have intrinsic rights which should be respected. (Watson, 2009)

Keeping this in mind therefore, by supporting animal testing we will be violating the very basic animal rights that we should be taking care of by subjecting these animals to cruelty and prematurely ending their lives. Notably also is the fact that animals have no power to agree or disagree to what is done and are therefore forced to what would have been against their wish were it under different circumstances (Hayhurst, 2000).

Evidently some of the complex diseases like cancer and AIDS which have been under experiment for centuries now still do not have a vaccine leave alone a cure years later after millions of animals have cruelly been subjected to various tests which are claimed to assist in research (Watson, 2009).

The idea that there are animals present for use at the scientists’ use has made them narrow their researches to search for a cure instead of other beneficial advancements like finding how to prevent the spread of these diseases and hence save many people who continue to die day in day out.

The cost analysis of animal testing is also alarming considering the billions of dollars that are injected each year and the number of animals that are involved yet what comes out is not perfect. We continue to allocate money to this course every year in the name of research whose results will end up being re-tested again using human beings whom we claim we do not want to use as test gargets (Kotler & Lee, 2005).

In many instances it can be proofed that drugs have been banned from the market after extensive research on animal testing and consuming a lot of cash, because of the dire effects that they cause to human beings.

The benefits that animal testing provide to the human race has not been proven and if the benefits exist, there are several other ways of achieving them which are more humane and does not inflict pain on animals. Coherently, it is useless to conduct a procedure which those who perform it are not sure of it and will in the end re-test it again.

As a matter of fact, the perpetrators of this barbaric act of animal testing claim that they want to save human beings from any effects of the drugs however, they end up risking people’s lives when they start testing the drugs on human beings. It is therefore, paramount that the issue of animal testing be re-addressed and be banned as it is immoral and goes against the rights of animals.

Animal Testing (Argumentative Essay Sample)

Animal testing.

New medical treatments and commercial products are tested in animal first to verify the levels of toxicity of the product and also their safety levels before these products are finally tested on humans.  Animals have been used for quite some time for biomedical respect that can be traced back during the Greek scientist like Aristotle period. Both scientists conducted medical experiments on live animals.  Various scientists determined to improve the field of medicine conduct medical experiments using specific animals like rats or monkeys to develop an in-depth understanding of pathology and pharmacology effect of the drugs. The drugs can only be tested on humans after undergoing a series of tests on animals.

In the nineteenth-century Arab physicians known as Zuhr Ibn conducted several animal researches to assess the surgical procedures that could be applicable in humans. Since then, animal testing is seen to be the most efficient way to developing new drugs and products, policy makers are yet to be convinced that using animal for testing causes serious harm more to animals.

Other scientists and animal welfare groups have opposed such practice terming it as inhumane and should be banned.  Despite numerous opposing opinions about animal testing, the practice is still alive in the 21 century in laboratories.  Animal testing is used in education and applied in biomedical research.  There are many animal testing being carried out even though various interest groups condemning such acts.  These groups advocate for alternative testing methods to prohibit animal testing.  Several animal welfare organizations have increased the levels of awareness about alternative testing without using animals. They argue that testing animals does not yield accurate results compared to human application; therefore, there is no need to involve animals in testing drugs or products.

Use of animals for medical purposes is seen to be necessary. Animal research and development usually begin their trials using rats. If the tests are successful, further tests are done on monkeys before using human beings. For testing, such tiered rounds are important because it reduces the level of error and any negative side effects. Scientist argues that animal testing has saved many lives and other alternatives might not produce accurate results like animal tests.  The use of animal for research is an old concept that continued to be debated.

Medical experts argue that animals are not intentionally harmed; they are well taken care of and treated well. There are regulations for animal testing that limits the misuse of animal during research. However, animal welfare organizations claim that it is unnecessary to use animal for testing and the process needs to be stopped because it is inhuman and cruel.  In conclusion, using animals for medical research is ethical and useful because it contributes to scientific development to improve human health. Despite the benefits of animal testing, some of the animal welfare organizations concerns need to be addressed with adequate regulations being enacted to ensure that animals are treated humanely.
