For decades, Hollywood and filmmakers have been pushing the envelope and creating some truly unforgettable and daring R-rated films, with some of the industry's most revered pictures rocking the risque rating. From celebrated classics like Animal House and Taxi Driver to modern-day marvels like Pearl , the silver screen has seen its fair share of exhilarating movies featuring daring and unapologetic premises, characters, and visuals.

Fans of the bold rating and those with a Prime Video subscription are in for quite a treat, as the juggernaut streaming platform is constantly acquiring a dynamic assortment of films of every genre available at their disposal. Right now Prime has a slew of fan-favorite comedies, crime dramas, war epics, and action extravaganzas starring iconic performers like Tom Hanks, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jodie Foster, and Steve Carell. Here are 11 of the best rated-R movies to watch on Prime.

11 Pearl (2022)

Pearl

The second installment in Ti West's acclaimed horror series X features the talented Mia Goth reprising her role as the villainous titular character in 2022's Pearl , which serves as a prequel and origin story for the fame-seeking antagonist who is forced to help take care of her ailing father while coping with her strict and controlling mother on a remote Texas farm in 1918.

Pearl's psychopathic tendencies are ultimately revealed as she plots to become a film star and escape the dead-end life she is stuck in, embracing her violent and deranged side to ensure her dreams are achieved.

Goth Dazzles as the Villainous Lead

Upon its worldwide premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, both Pearl and Goth attracted widespread critical acclaim, with fans raving about the dynamic actress' brilliant performance and admirable commitment to the crazed role. Goth received numerous accolades for her powerhouse work in the horror picture, winning a Sitges Film Festival Award for Best Actress as well as a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Lead Performance.

Due to the critical and commercial success of Pearl a third entry in the franchise entitled MaXXXine was released in 2024 with Goth returning, with director Ti West later stating that he had plans for a fourth film.

10 The Beekeeper (2024)

The Beekeeper

The Beekeeper

Action hero Jason Statham's latest big screen extravaganza was in the exhilarating 2024 thriller The Beekeeper, in which he portrays a retired former operative from a highly classified program who sets out on a mission for vengeance after his compassionate landlady tragically takes her life after falling prey to a phishing scam.

Statham's character, Adam Clay, begins to meticulously take down the money-hungry scammers responsible for her death, waging an epic war against a powerful company and their affluent technology executive overseeing the scam.

Statham Delivers to the Masses

The Beekeeper proved to be quite the success with both critics and moviegoers alike, grossing over $152 million and spending its first eight weeks of release in the top 10 films at the domestic box office.

It was one of Statham's most well-received projects, earning a 71% Rotten Tomatoes rating and 92% audience score, with the exciting leading man being in top-tier form in the action flick and dazzling his fans with his electrifying physical prowess and commanding on-screen presence. Though some have called The Beekeeper a John Wick knock-off, Statham nonetheless makes the most out of both the character and thriller.

9 Animal House (1978)

animal house

Animal House

Widely considered to be one of the greatest comedies to ever grace the big screen, John Landis' uproarious 1978 farce National Lampoon's Animal House enlists the talents of famous faces like John Belushi, Tim Matheson, John Vernon, and Donald Sutherland, and takes place at the fictional Faber College in 1962 where a rambunctious and wild fraternity is causing major trouble for the school's fed-up Dean Vernon Wormer, who assigns his favorite snooty frat house to take down the rowdy Delta Tau Chi House and have their charter revoked.

Animal House Skyrockets Belushi to Stardom

Animal House marked the feature film debut of the then 28-year-old Belushi, who had steadily gained famed as a founding cast member on Saturday Night Live and was looking to shift his focus to Hollywood productions. The comedian would emerge as the film's breakout performer and it helped pave the way for his ensuing filmmaking career.

With just a budget of $3 million, the beloved cult classic went on to earn more than $141 million throughout its lifetime and $120.1 million during its original run, becoming the highest-grossing comedy of all time until it was surpassed by Ghostbuster in 1984 (another Ramis flick).

8 Smile (2022)

Smile

Parker Finn's spine-tingling 2022 supernatural horror film Smile took the world by storm because of its deeply unsettling and downright creepy premise, which centers on therapist Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) as she witnesses the terrifying and bizarre suicide of a patient in a psychiatric ward after claiming she was being terrorized by an unseen entity that presents itself as different smiling people.

Rose herself begins to experience unexplainable and frightening phenomena after the horrific incident, and she also begins to believe she is being haunted by a malevolent presence.

Smile Sets a Box Office Record

A sequel to Finn's 2020 short film Laura Hasn't Slept , the taut psychological horror flick had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest and delivered plenty of thrills and chills for brave moviegoers, who were rightfully freaked out by the ghastly smiles featured.

Smile was favorably compared to films like Ringu and It Follows , and went on to be a blockbuster triumph, earning over $217 million and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated horror film worldwide released during the pandemic. Smile was nominated for Best Horror Film at the Saturn Awards and because of its remarkable reception. An upcoming sequel is currently set to hit theaters later this year.

7 The Boondock Saints (1999)

boondock saints

The Boondock Saints

Before he was killing zombies with his trustee crossbow on a weekly basis, Norman Reedus appeared alongside Sean Patrick Flannery as vigilante fraternal twin brothers Murphy and Conner MacManus in the 1999 action thriller The Boondock Saints .

In the gripping picture, the fearless Irish Catholic twins take on Boston's criminal underworld after killing two Russian mafia members in an act of self-defense, and they set out to rid the city of dangerous undesirables in the name of God, all the while being hunted down by a determined FBI Special Agent (Willem Dafoe).

Celebrated '90s Cult Classic

Troy Duffy made his directorial debut with the underrated gem, drawing inspiration for its premise after witnessing a drug dealer take money from a dead body across the hall from his Los Angeles apartment.

The Boondock Saints was given a limited release due to the Columbine High School massacre and was subsequently a box office failure, though because of word-of-mouth and home video release it grossed $50 million in sales and emerged as a bona fide cult classic. A sequel titled The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day reunited Reedus and Flannery, and a third film with the actors is currently in development.

6 Saving Private Ryan (1998)

saving private ryan

Saving Private Ryan

Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made and one of Steven Spielberg's finest masterpieces , the poignant and deeply moving 1998 epic war drama Saving Private Ryan chronicles the courageous efforts of a group of soldiers as they venture into enemy territory in Normandy, France to bring home the eponymous private during World War II. Tom Hanks leads the noble men on their valiant quest and brilliantly portrays Captain John Miller, who is determined to locate the young soldier and tell him of the tragic deaths of his three brothers killed in action.

Spielberg's Groundbreaking War Masterpiece

The blockbuster picture featured the additional talents of famous faces like Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, and Giovanni Ribisi and went on to become the second-highest-grossing film of the year, bringing in over $482 million worldwide and receiving universal acclaim from fans and critics alike.

Saving Private Ryan won five Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Drama, and World War II veterans who went and saw the heartrending film expressed that the combat scenes were the most realistic cinema portrayals of their personal experiences that they had ever seen, and that it touched them so deeply that some were unable to finish watching it because of their trauma.

5 Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Reservoir Dogs

Reservoir Dogs

The king of stylized violence Quentin Tarantino made his phenomenal feature-length film debut when he directed the 1992 crime drama Reservoir Dogs , showcasing his unique flair and point-of-view in a story that focuses on a group of diamond thieves who attempt to pull off the ultimate heist for a life-changing payday but find their mission goes horrifically wrong when one of the criminals turns out to be a police informant.

After escaping the authorities, the remaining thugs meet up at their pre-planned rendezvous spot with tensions boiling over as they attempt to figure out who might be an undercover cop.

A Trailblazing Feature-Length Film Debut

Touting a fantastic ensemble cast led by Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Steve Buscemi, Reservoir Dogs was a modest box office success and fared extremely well with critics, who praised its non-linear storytelling and exceptional cast performances.

The crime flick achieved even greater popularity after the release of Tarantino's 1994 juggernaut Pulp Fiction, and is now regarded as a highly-revered cult classic and sensational independent classic; Empire magazine named Reservoir Dogs as the "Greatest Independent Film of All Time" and it helped pave the way for Tarantino's illustrious filmmaking career.

4 The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Silence of the Lambs

Silence of the Lambs

Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster created some of the cinema's most sensational movie magic when they starred in Jonathan Demme's 1991 psychological horror thriller The Silence of the Lambs , an adaptation of the Thomas Harris novel that follows young and ambitious FBI trainee Clarice Starling as she is forced to seek help from the imprisoned cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter in order to catch a deranged serial killer skinning his female victims.

Clarice and Lecter engage in a taut cat-and-mouse game while working the case as she is given a terrifying glimpse into the mind of the formerly respected forensic psychiatrist.

Demme's Record-Shattering Triumph

Directors, critics, and fans have frequently declared that The Silence of the Lambs is one of the greatest and most influential films of all time, with both Starling and Lecter often being cited as the best movie heroines and villains.

The spine-tingling picture is just the third and most recent film to win the big five at the Academy Awards (including Best Actor for Hopkins and Best Actress for Foster), receiving the prestigious honor alongside It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It is the first and only horror film to win Best Picture and because of its unprecedented success, both a sequel and two prequels were ultimately released.

3 Taxi Driver (1976)

Taxi Driver

Taxi Driver

Hollywood dream team Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro joined forces for the 1976 neo-noir psychological thriller Taxi Driver , in which the Oscar-winner famously portrayed former U.S. Marine and Vietnam War veteran Travis Bickle as he is plagued by insomnia and crippling loneliness and takes up a job as a taxi driver at night to combat his struggles.

The emotionally unwell young man begins to become obsessed with saving the world (specifically New York) from urban decay and the criminals that roam the streets, and he begins to spiral further after fantasizing about assassinating a potential presidential candidate.

De Niro & Foster Truly Deliver

Jodie Foster joined De Niro on-screen as the 12-year-old child prostitute Iris Steensma, whom Travis attempts to convince to quit her profession and instead just be a normal kid. De Niro bonded with Foster during production and took special time with her, astutely believing she had "serious potential" and wanting to help her explore the craft and her own skills as a performer.

Taxi Driver was the recipient of the highly-coveted Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and also earned four Academy Award nominations, while going on to achieve cult status and becoming one of the most culturally significant and influential films of its time.

2 The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

the 40 year old virgin

The 40 Year Old Virgin

Judd Apatow made his unforgettable directorial debut when he helmed the uproarious 2005 romantic comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin , enlisting the talents of a star-studded cast led by Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Catherine Keener, and Seth Rogen and telling the amusing story of the shy and introverted Andy Stitzer (Carell) as his electronics store buddies attempt to help him lose his virginity when they discover the awkward middle-aged man has never had sex. When Andy strikes up an exciting relationship with a beautiful shop owner, he attempts to navigate the world of romance with side-splitting results.

Related: How The 40-Year-Old Virgin Was the Triumphant Return of the R-Rated Comedy

Carell's Fearless Performance

Apatow was inspired to cast Carell in the lead role of Andy after watching his scene-stealing performance in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, a nd the hapless character was based on a sketch Carell created while performing with the improv comedy troupe The Second City.

Audiences couldn't get enough of the delightfully zany farce, which showcased Carell's impressive skills as an actor and helped further establish him as one of Hollywood's most endearing comedians. The 40-Year-Old-Virgin was named as one of the Top Ten Films of the Year by the American Film Institute and helped establish both Apatow and his lead stars as certified movie stars.

1 Road House (2024)

Road House

Road House (2024)

A remake of the Patrick Swayze '80s classic , the 2024 action flick Road House features Jake Gyllenhaal as the tough-and-troubled former UFC fighter Elwood Dalton, who after falling from grace in his brutal profession is offered a job as a head bouncer at a Florida Keys road house that often attracts some dangerous, low-life patrons.

Dalton inadvertently finds himself attracting the unwanted attention of a violent local gangster looking to expand his empire, with the criminal tasking the psychotic enforcer Knox (Conor McGregor) to get rid of the resilient bouncer once and for all.

Gyllenhaal & McGregor's Epic Showdown

Road House marked UFC champion McGregor's acting debut, and fans of both the fighter and Oscar-nominee Gyllenhaal were thrilled to watch the two men duke it out on screen in the adrenaline-pumping film. Despite getting a mixed bag response from critics, the action film attracted a record-breaking 50 million viewers worldwide on Prime Video within just its first two weekend and went on to become the studio's “most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis.”

Due to the exceptional viewership numbers and positive fan response, a sequel was officially announced to be in development with Gyllenhaal reprising his role as the resilient Dalton.

10 best R-rated movies streaming right now

Tom Burke stands between Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Summer is nearing its end, and while hits like Alien: Romulus , Deadpool & Wolverine , and Trap are still out in theaters, streaming services are just starting to debut late spring’s and early summer’s biggest and best films.

Challengers (2024)

Furiosa: a mad max saga (2024), abigail (2024), love lies bleeding (2024), hit man (2024), anyone but you (2023), oppenheimer (2023), all of us strangers (2023), alien (1979), the godfather (1972).

From new movies like George Miller’s Furiosa to classics like Ridley Scott’s Alien , these superb R-rated movies are available to stream on a variety of platforms like Netflix , Amazon Prime Video , Hulu , and Max . So put the kids to bed, turn off the lights, and press play to enjoy some of the best mature content that Hollywood has to offer.

Who knew tennis could be so exciting … and so erotic? That’s just what Challengers , the new film from Luca Guadagnino, serves up throughout its 131-minute runtime as the film uses a tennis match to probe the lives of three people caught in a very unusual love triangle. That these three people are played by Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist only makes the movie more pleasurable to watch in the moment, and more thoughtful to consider long after the credits have rolled.

During the final of a minor league tennis tournament in New Rochelle, New York, two longtime sports rivals, and former best friends, Patrick and Art, reflect on what led them to this point in their lives … and the woman, Tashi, who made it all happen. By cutting between the past, which shows the three meeting and falling in love with one another, to the present, which depicts their frayed relationships with one another, Challengers showcases how ambition can be both ruinous and save a person’s professional and personal life.

Challengers is streaming on MGM+.

One of the biggest flops of the year is also one of the best movies of 2024. Furiosa didn’t quite connect with moviegoers when it was released in late May, making only $172 million against a $168 million budget. And since studios only keep half of the grosses, and the budget doesn’t factor in marketing and distribution costs, Warner Bros. lost millions of dollars on what many thought was a sure thing. Now that it’s streaming on Max, it’s time for many to discover a sure-to-be classic action movie.

Set years before the events in Mad Max: Fury Road , Furiosa chronicles the origin of its title character (Anya Taylor-Joy) from childhood, when she’s kidnapped and forced to watch her mother’s murder, to a young woman who is dead set on getting revenge. The only things in her way are Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme), and countless postapocalyptical hoodlums who are all too willing to kill her. Featuring great performances by Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth and action sequences worthy of comparison to Fury Road ‘s, Furiosa is a must-see movie for anyone willing to call themselves a movie fan.

Furiosa is streaming on Max .

Vampire movies are pretty routine these days, which is why Abigail is even more fun than usual. The narrative is straightforward, yet catchy, and the cast, which includes another great silly Dan Stevens performance, knows what movie they’re in and has fun with it.

A band of criminals plan to kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of an underworld kingpin to net a $50 million ransom. The only problem? Little Abigail is a vampire. Whoops! As the criminals try to survive the night in a secluded mansion with the little monster, they soon discover they got more than they bargained for. Will anyone survive the night?

What do you get when you mix a Coen Brothers -esque film noir with the forbidden romance of the 1996 thriller Bound and a bonkers ending straight out of David Lynch? You get something like Love Lies Bleeding , which takes these familiar elements and smashes them together to make something excitingly fresh.

Kristen Stewart plays sullen gym manager Lou, whose humdrum life is awakened by the arrival of beautiful drifter Jackie ( Twisters  actress Katy O’Brian). Their budding romance is complicated by Jackie’s dreams of becoming a bodybuilder in Las Vegas and by Lou’s extended family, who are involved in shady dealings that involve crime, bribes, and possibly murder. When someone gets killed, it’s up to Lou and Jackie to figure out how to evade getting caught, or worse, while still trying to preserve their relationship.

Love Lies Bleeding is streaming on Max .

The ascension of Glen Powell is complete. The Twisters actor, who has been trying to find the breakout role he deserves for years, shines in the new action comedy Hit Man , which is currently the most popular movie on Netflix right now. It helps that he co-wrote the screenplay with director Richard Linklater, and took an inspiration from a Texas Monthly article about a mild-mannered professor, Gary Johnson, who posed as different hit men to entrap potential customers who were looking to off someone they loathed.

Things go according to plan until Madison (Adria Arjona) walks into his life. She wants to get out of an abusive marriage and thinks offing her husband is her only option. Gary talks her out of it, but that doesn’t stop him from falling for her … or for violence to ensue. Hit Man emphasizes foreplay over gunplay, and it’s all the better for it. It’s a dizzyingly romantic movie, even if true love is found here by disposing a body or two.

Hit Man is streaming on Netflix .

Rom-coms aren’t usually racy enough to warrant an R rating, and maybe that’s why Anyone but You was a surprise hit in late 2023. The Will Gluck-directed movie, which is a very loose adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing , stars Glen Powell ( Top Gun: Maverick ) and Sydney Sweeney ( Madame Web ) as Ben and Bea, who loathe each other because of a past botched one-night stand, and now must attend the same lavish wedding with their exes. They then decide to strike a deal to pose as a couple to try to win back their former lovers. Guess what happens in the process? Yes, they start to develop feelings for each other.

While Anyone but You isn’t all that original or surprising (especially if you know your Shakespeare), it’s still fun and genuinely funny. The film makes great use of its primary assets: the beautiful Australian setting, and the magnetic charisma of both its leading stars. When they share the screen together, Powell and Sweeney showcase palpable chemistry, and elevate a standard rom-com into a near-great one.

Anyone But You is streaming on Netflix .

Already being called director Christopher Nolan’s best movie, Oppenheimer is an epic biographical thriller that dramatizes the life of the “father of the atomic bomb,” J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oscar winner Cillian Murphy stars as the theoretical physicist in the film, which chronicles his experiences in universities before being recruited to lead the Manhattan Project. It also depicts his downfall after World War II, with a 1954 security hearing condemning his part in the creation of nuclear weapons.

Oppenheimer quickly gained critical acclaim for its unique portrayal of the complicated historical figure’s story, with Murphy infusing his character with both brilliance and imperfections. Aside from the protagonist’s gory visions of his creation’s victims, Oppenheimer earned its R-rating for its straightforward portrayals of sex and nudity. A scene with Florence Pugh’s Jean Tatlock has even been censored using a CGI black dress in the Middle East and India, with the latter also censoring any scenes that show characters smoking.

Oppenheimer  is streaming on Amazon Prime Video .

Loneliness is something not often depicted on-screen, and when it is, it’s often in a depressing context. That’s not necessarily true with All of Us Strangers , a 2023 drama that is both very sad and also incredibly uplifting. Andrew Haigh’s acclaimed film stars Andrew Scott ( Ripley ) as Adam, a single screenwriter living in a near-empty apartment building just outside of London. One night, he has a chance encounter with his mysterious neighbor, Harry ( Gladiator 2 ‘s Paul Mescal), and starts a relationship that causes Adam to think about his long-dead parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell), who appear to him as if they are alive.

No, this isn’t a ghost story — not exactly. All of Us Strangers is a lot of things: a sensual love story, a moody rumination of childhood trauma, and a generational portrait that examines the inherent chasm between parents and their children. Ultimately, though, the movie is a stellar drama that contains a quartet of fine performances from Scott, Mescal, Foy, and Bell. It’s movie you won’t soon forget, and you won’t want to after watching that devastating climax.

All of Us Strangers is streaming on Hulu .

Now that you’ve seen Alien: Romulus , go back to where it all began. Director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror masterpiece Alien takes place in deep space aboard the commercial towing spaceship Nostromo. The ship’s crew, including warrant officer Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), encounters a deadly extraterrestrial organism on an alien vessel. Little do they know that after they retreat back to the Nostromo, the alien has already infiltrated their ship. As the creature begins hunting the crew, they must fight for survival against an unknown and terrifying enemy.

The 1979 classic would go on to spawn the beloved Alien franchise , with the first movie best remembered for its clever use of silence and its claustrophobic setting. Scott focuses on the build-up, with the film containing very few shots of the actual alien killing its victims. It’s those moments, of course, that gave Alien its R rating, as well as intense and frightening ones like the iconic chest-burster moment.

Alien  is streaming on Hulu .

Director Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is a legendary mob drama that’s often called the best crime movie ever made . Based on Mario Puzo’s eponymous 1969 novel, the sweeping epic chronicles the Corleone crime family’s rise to power in post-World War II America. The story specifically follows Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) and his reluctant son, Michael (Al Pacino), who is drawn into the world of organized crime after his father is nearly assassinated.

The first in the award-winning trilogy sees Michael experience brutality and betrayal as he learns more about the family business. Its R rating was unavoidable, as the glimpse into the inner workings of the mafia comes with shootings, murders, physical fights, and more kinds of gore and violence. Despite premiering over half a century ago, The Godfather has lost none of its impact and is still celebrated for the way it set a new standard for the gangster genre and cinema as a whole.

The Godfather  is streaming on Paramount+ .

The guide to our grades, parent movie review by kirsten hawkes.

A vast continent needs sprawling stories – at least, that’s what Kevin Costner provides in his self-funded epic, Horizon: An American Saga. Planned to extend to four feature films, this series is determined to tell an exhaustive tale of those who tamed the West, and those who suffered in the process.

As the first chapter in the series, this film has the challenging task of introducing characters and setting up story arcs. From the perspective of the audience, this means lots of cuts between locations and characters, often before we understand what’s happening or who these people are. It takes effort to follow the plotlines and since nothing wraps up at the end of the film, there’s no payoff. Only go to this movie if you’re willing to return to the theater in August for chapter two, or you are just setting yourself up for frustration.

Further north, Hayes Ellison (Kevin Costner) arrives in a Wyoming mining town only to find himself instantly caught within a bloody feud that has also ensnared a prostitute (Abbey Lee) and a toddler. After shooting a would-be child snatcher, Ellison goes on the run, with the woman and child in tow. But his instincts tell him that they are being hunted, and he knows they can’t let their guard down.

Finally, the movie focuses on a wagon train traveling through Kansas Territory. There are a mixed bag of personalities, including an experienced wagon train captain, a clueless English couple, a pair of troublemakers, and families who just want to survive the trip. And given the screenwriters’ willingness to kill off characters, there are no guarantees…

Given the disparate plotlines, it’s easy to see why the movie often feels unfocused. But I’m prepared to give Mr. Costner the benefit of the doubt and assume that the stories will intertwine in the next installment. I also hope the second chapter makes more space for the indigenous stories. In the first act of this film, the indigenous characters are violent aggressors, killing terrified, peaceable white people. Eventually the movie makes space for their backstories, perspectives, and losses – something I hope expands in the next film. (I was pleasantly surprised that the script nodded to historically accurate diversity and included both Black settlers and Chinese immigrant laborers in the film.)

More problematic for some viewers will be the movie’s level of violence, which earned it a Restricted rating. Profanity and alcohol come in at PG-13 levels, but the violence is pervasive. People are frequently shot with firearms (sometimes in cold blood), killed with arrows or knives, or scalped on screen. In one chilling scene, a parent explodes a gunpowder device, blowing up their entire family, rather than allow them to be killed or captured by the Apache. In addition, there is some sexual content and one female character’s back and breasts are visible when she gives herself a sponge bath.

If these flaws don’t deter you, and you have a passion for classic Westerns or history films (and we’ll see in which direction this series tilts in the next episode), you might enjoy Horizon: An American Saga. The cinematography is stunning and a few scenes had me gasping out loud at their sheer beauty. The cast do their best to inject the tale with desperation and hope, and I hope it pays off in Chapter Two. The series is an ambitious project by Kevin Costner and I think he falls short. But the American experiment is also vast and imperfect, so this might be a more fitting tale than it appears at first glance.

Horizon: An American Saga Rating & Content Info

Why is Horizon: An American Saga rated R? Horizon: An American Saga is rated R by the MPAA for violence, some nudity and sexuality.

Violence: There are frequent, extended scenes of bloody violence. Settlers are killed and their bloody bodies, including that of a child, are seen covered in bugs. A woman shoots a man in cold blood and then flees. An indigenous man is clubbed to death by a group from another tribe. There are a few scenes of punching and hitting, in one of which a woman punches a man; in another, a woman is slapped by a man. A man is kicked in the chest. A teenager points a loaded gun at a youth but there are no injuries. Gunshots are frequently heard. Apache attack a settlement and set fire to tents. Throughout the film, people are shot with guns and killed with arrows: blood spatter is visible as are wounds. An adult uses gunpowder to cause an explosion that kills their entire family rather than allow themselves to be killed by the Apache. There are scenes of people being scalped by both white and indigenous assailants. A group of vengeful settlers decide to hunt the Apache who killed their families: there is discussion of bounties for “Indian scalps”. Sexual Content: There are scenes of men and women kissing. An implied post-coital scene sees a man and woman getting dressed. A woman pressures an exhausted man to have sex: there is no nudity but the activity is obvious. A woman’s back and breasts are seen as she gives herself a sponge bath. Profanity: The script contains at least 21 terms of deity, 17 minor profanities, a scatological curse, and two crude anatomical terms. The term “Indian” is sometimes used to describe indigenous peoples. Alcohol / Drug Use: A woman smokes a cigarette. People drink alcohol in a number of situations. A doctor is said to be so drunk he’s unconscious: he’s later revived and told to see patients.

MAJOR LEAGUE is a GRAND SLAM!

Pg-13 for strong language and brief sexual content, what's the story.

When the greedy widow of the Cleveland Indians' owner decides she'd rather relocate the team to Miami, she assembles an awful roster to ensure game attendance is at an all-time low. The team starters are a bunch of has-beens and never-will-bes like over-the-hill catcher Jake Taylor ( Tom Berenger ), "wild thing" rookie pitcher Rick Vaughn ( Charlie Sheen ) and cocky base-stealer Willy Mays Hayes ( Wesley Snipes ), none of whom knows they've been set up to lose. After an unexpected winning streak, the team discovers the owner's plans and vows to win at all costs -- even praying to the Afro-Cuban player's ( Dennis Haysbert ) voodoo god Jobu, who accepts fine rum and cigar offerings.

Is It Any Good?

Major League is a refreshingly fictional and light story about a very real team: the Cleveland Indians. It's a nice change from all the feel-good sports flicks that are usually historical dramas about the first team to overcome racism, poverty, or devastating odds.

Sheen shines as the rockin' closer with a lot of attitude. As his foil, Corbin Bernsen is perfectly vain as the all-business pro athlete who's cashing in off the field but is checked out on the field. Even 18 years after its original release, the movie is still a fun, lightweight sports flick. When Berenger leads the team to a predictable championship victory, it's impossible not to grin.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about determination and overcoming obstacles. What starts out as a group of "losers" without a chance turns into the little team that could. How does the owner's lack of confidence affect the players? Why is it so compelling to root for the underdog? Kids: name your favorite sports movies.

Deadpool & Wolverine Review: The MCU Multiverse Movie I've Been Waiting For

10 best deadpool movie scenes, ranked, i'm furious with deadpool & wolverine for how it treated chris evans' johnny storm & his ending.

  • Deadpool & Wolverine marks the first R-rated movie for the MCU, with plenty of blood, violence, and cursing to match its antihero characters.
  • The movie maintains Deadpool's signature mature themes, not shying away from gore or profanity, challenging the typical family-friendly MCU mold.
  • While the movie includes sexual references, it stops short of explicit scenes, making it marginally more family-friendly compared to previous Deadpool installments, although it is still far from being a kid-friendly release.

Deadpool & Wolverine has hit theaters, and while it may be the first R-rated movie for the MCU , there are naturally questions surrounding how much it warrants this rating. Deadpool & Wolverine has finally brought the Merc with a Mouth to the MCU alongside his dream companion, Wolverine. The early days of Disney's acquisition of Fox led to much speculation over whether the famously family-friendly franchise would tone down Deadpool's no-holds-barred content to fit within the typical ethos of Disney and the MCU timeline .

Considering Deadpool's legacy both on the page and on the big screen as one of Marvel's most hyper-violent and unabashed antiheroes, fears were thankfully assuaged relatively quickly. While Deadpool & Wolverine 's R-rating may have raised concerns that a large swathe of the MCU fandom may be precluded from taking part in Marvel's next big movie , the question remains over whether the release is truly as exclusive as the official age rating would suggest. As such, here is a spoiler-free rundown of what audiences can expect to make their minds up on the matter.

Ryan Reynolds In Full Deadpool Costume With Hands Over Mouth Looking Shocked And Hugh Jackman As Wolverine Looking Disgusted In Deadpool & Wolverine

Led by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman at the top of their superhero game, Deadpool & Wolverine is an absurd blast of a Marvel multiverse joyride.

Deadpool & Wolverine Is The MCU's First R-Rated Movie

Mcu movies are typically pg-13.

The Motion Picture Association of America has given Deadpool & Wolverine a " Restricted " rating. This comes with the following descriptor:

Contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them.

This rating mirrors the two previous Deadpool movies and indicates the severity of Deadpool & Wolverine 's adult themes. It is also the first time that the rating has made its way to the MCU's movie roster , though Marvel TV productions like Daredevil and Punisher boast the equivalent TV-MA rating.

The UK equivalent of an R-rating assigned by the British Board of Film Classification is 15, which helps to give an indication of the kind of age range considered suitable for R-rated productions.

This is a significant development for the MCU as its movies have all been PG-13 until now. While some MCU movies are more violent than others, nearly all shy away from showing more than a drop of (human) blood, replacing it instead with either alien blood or fluid used to power robots. The latter was used to great effect in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , as Scarlet Witch is depicted covered in a blood-like substance that came from destroying numerous Ultrons. Deadpool & Wolverine , however, is unapologetically bloody.

Deadpool & Wolverine Is Very Bloody & Violent

Deadpool & Wolverine telegraphed the level of blood, gore, and violence that audiences could expect when the first trailers were released. As the titular heroes tussle, trailers show Wolverine stabbing Deadpool through the groin and Deadpool firing at point-blank range through Wolverine's abdomen. To put it mildly, there is plenty more where that came from in the movie itself, as the MCU takes full advantage of the R-rating and the titular characters' MO. The hack-and-slash violence they engage in is one thing, but their dual healing factors also ensure that they can continue shedding blood and limbs ad infinitum.

Marvel Comics suggests that Deadpool's healing factor is more powerful than Wolverine's, which is hinted at in the X-Men movies by the fact that Wolverine could die in Logan .

This should come as no surprise to anyone who has watched Deadpool and Deadpool 2 . Some hyper-violent highlights from these movies include Deadpool's single-bullet triple headshot in Deadpool and Juggernaut tearing Deadpool in two with his bare hands in Deadpool 2 . Deadpool & Wolverine treads much of the same gory ground while finding yet more creative ways of inflicting grievous injury. The violence is the most overt justification for the movie's R-rating and may be the most prudent concern for parents wondering whether it is family-friendly.

Ryan-Reynolds-as-Wade--Deadpool-from-Deadpool

Deadpool is a staple of the superhero genre thanks to his unique humor, quirks, and the action he brings to his movies, with outstanding scenes.

Deadpool & Wolverine Includes A Lot Of Cursing

A PG-13 rating comes with a rule that one utterance of harsh profanity - described as " sexually-derived " - is allowed. While this is the typical rating for all MCU movies, the MCU's first f-bomb didn't appear until 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 . Deadpool & Wolverine has therefore increased the MCU's f-bomb tally one-hundredfold , as the Merc with a Mouth continues to live up to his nickname. His foul language is bolstered by characters like Wolverine, who also delivered X-Men: First Class ' curse word allocation in 2011.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is arguably the MCU movie that put the most strain on its PG-13 rating, as it also featured moments of relatively shocking violence and gore.

Deadpool & Wolverine 's R-rating means there is no upper limit on the amount or nature of curse words that characters can deploy. While this means that f-bombs rack up to the point where they almost become trivial, it never feels overly gratuitous, and audiences can expect to hear the same level and intensity of profanity featured in both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 . With that in mind, Deadpool & Wolverine is on a par with its predecessors in most adult-themed areas - though it does rein in one R-rated factor.

Deadpool & Wolverine Includes Some Sexual References

Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson and Deadpool in the MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine

Like the violence and profanity, the first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer laid out that sexual references would also be present in the movie as Wade Wilson jokes about pegging. While this is not the only sexual reference in the movie, the remainder follow a similar vein and are always part of a joke that - like most others in the movie - is swiftly brushed aside. The notable difference between this and Deadpool is that Deadpool & Wolverine stops at references and innuendos rather than depict actual sex scenes that feature the aforementioned activity.

Taken together, Deadpool & Wolverine could be considered marginally more family-friendly than previous Deadpool installments, though it is still far from toned down. It is worth noting that it earns its R-rating and is worlds apart from the movies that typically comprise the MCU regarding mature themes and imagery. With that in mind, parents may wish to approach this movie with caution, basing the decision on the example set by Deadpool and Deadpool 2 .

It is likely, meanwhile, that Marvel will somehow cater to the audiences that missed this installment and its implications on the wider MCU narrative in some other way. Once Upon a Deadpool was Fox's way of affording younger audiences the chance to catch up on the story in a more PG-friendly context. Whether Marvel does this with Deadpool & Wolverine in some capacity remains to be seen, but it is safe to say that this particular release is not one of Marvel's kid-friendly movies in its current state.

‘Nope’ Review: Hell Yes

Jordan Peele’s genre-melting third feature stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as brother-and-sister horse wranglers defending the family ranch from an extraterrestrial threat.

By A.O. Scott

The trailers for Jordan Peele’s “Nope,” one of the most feverishly anticipated movies of the summer, have raised some intriguing questions. Is it a western? A horror film? Science fiction? Satire? Will it fulfill the expectations raised by Peele’s first two mind-bending, zeitgeist-surfing features, “Get Out” and “Us,” or confound them?

I can now report that the answer to all of those questions is: Yup. Which is to say that there are some fascinating internal tensions within the movie, along with impeccably managed suspense, sharp jokes and a beguiling, unnerving atmosphere of all-around weirdness.

“Nope” feels less polemically pointed than “Us” or “Get Out,” more at home in its idiosyncrasies and flights of imagination even as it follows, in the end, a more conventional narrative path. This might be cause for some disappointment, since Peele’s keen dialectical perspective on our collective American pathologies has been a bright spot in an era of franchised corporate wish fulfillment. At the same time, he’s an artist with the freedom and confidence to do whatever he wants to, and one who knows how to challenge audiences without alienating them.

movie reviews rated r

In any case, it would be inaccurate to claim that the social allegory has been scrubbed away: Every genre Peele invokes is a flytrap for social meanings, and you can’t watch this cowboys-and-aliens monster movie without entertaining some deep thoughts about race, ecology, labor and the toxic, enchanting power of modern popular culture.

“Nope” addresses such matters in a mood that feels more ruminant than argumentative. The main target of its critique is also the principal object of its affection, which we might call — using a name that has lately become something of a fighting word — cinema.

Netflix has established itself as a serious contender during award seasons with some of the best R-rated movies available to stream on the platform . The massive streaming service also still keeps its competitors close by housing non-Netflix Original rated-R movies right beside its original content. Films often get slapped with R ratings for varying degrees of violence, language, sexual content, and more.

There are R-rated movies that get it right with well-produced and timed violence and language. Films like Netflix's latest attempt at The Texas Chainsaw Massacre throw so much violence at a wall, hoping it sticks, but it doesn't. The selection of R-rated movies on Netflix often changes, and this year brings with it some award-winning instant classics like All Quiet on the Western Front , eerie horror masterpieces like It Follows , and divisive thrillers like The Killer . Whether you're looking for raw, real dialogue or a horror movie with a tasteful level of violence, these films hit the mark with critics and audiences, elevating them to the top of the stream list.

the-lovebirds-issa-rae-kumail-nanjiani-2

A Netflix original rom-com , The Lovebirds pairs Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a dissolving couple that accidentally steps into a murder mystery they must solve to clear their names. Hitting the middle of the road with critics and receiving a less favorable tone with streamers, this R-rated comedy is worth the stream for its star power.

With a quick one-hour and twenty-six-minute runtime, the Michael Showalter-directed film packs a lot of comedic conspiracy into its brief screentime . The realistic growth of Leilani (Rae) and Jibran (Nanjiani)'s relationship brings heart along with the humor. Audience members come for the leads and stay for their chemistry, making The Lovebirds a worthy watch next time you sit down with your partner.

As he rescues the young Ovi Mahajan ( Rudhraksh Jaiswal ), Tyler must use all of his talents to stay alive.

With striking visuals to go with its meticulously choreographed fight scenes, Extraction is a must-see for fans of the genre . There’s also some notable character development there, as Tyler's dark past and how it influences his mission is explored. While, unlike the best action movies , the film doesn’t do much to change the old formulas or elevate the genre, there’s no denying that it’s a fun one to see at least once.

10 'It Follows' (2015)

Directed by david robert mitchell.

Maika Monroe with an arm cast leans over the edge of pool in It Follows

Image via The Weinstein Company

An Indie horror flick that deserves more than an under-the-radar following, It Follows steps outside the genre with a wild premise and tension-building scares. A date with an out-of-towner goes awry after the pair sleep together and Jay ( Maika Monroe ) finds herself the target of a supernatural entity that is slowly following her. If it reaches Jay, she's dead. An infamous Oscar snub , It Follows is one of the best R-rated horror films that doesn't need gore and violence to satisfy its audience.

Drawing from slow burn and imagine-your-own-horror from films like The Blair Witch Project and others, It Follows carefully picks and chooses the most unsettling moments to scare viewers right out of their seats . The movie is a foundational film for Monroe, one of the genre's modern-day final girls. While it was no box-office blockbuster, It Follows curated a passionate fanbase who rallied around the premise enough to earn it an upcoming sequel, They Follow .

9 'The Killer' (2023)

Directed by david fincher.

Michael Fassbender taxi The Killer

Michael Fassbender stars as the titular unnamed assassin in director David Fincher 's latest thriller, The Killer . Based on the eponymous graphic novel series by Alexis "Matz" Nolent , the film follows the protagonist's quest for revenge after he misses the shot on an important assignment.

The Killer is an exercise in restraint, with Fassbender perfectly cast as the methodical, sociopathic protagonist who takes things one step at a time to reach his goal. While critics have praised the director's latest, it has been more divisive among fans precisely for its slow-burn approach and character-driven narrative. For fans of David Fincher's movies and directorial style, though, the 2023 film is a must-see.

The Killer (2023)

8 'don't look up' (2021), directed by adam mckay.

Doctor Randall (Leondardo DiCaprio) and his assistant Kate (Jennifer Lawrence) walking behind the President (Meryl Streep) and her aide Jason (Jonah Hill) in Don't Look Up

An incredibly divisive and debated film when it first premiered, director Adam McKay 's Don't Look Up is a satirical disaster movie that follows the plight of two astronomers – Kate Dibiasky ( Jennifer Lawrence ) and Dr. Randall Mindy ( Leonardo DiCaprio ) – who discover that a comet is heading straight towards the earth. As they try to convince the government and the media to take the appropriate measures, they find a surprising amount of resistance to the apocalyptic event.

Don't Look Up' s biting satire about media, politics, and the power of the internet, fortunately (or unfortunately) coincided with the pandemic , which only highlighted its message. Some critics found it too heavy-handed, but fans think that its over-the-top story is what gives it its charm. Either way, the movie manages to touch on sensitive topics and poke fun at them with dry humor and amazing performances from its all-star cast.

Don't Look Up

7 'beverly hills cop' (1984), directed by martin brest.

Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold hide behind a bush in Beverly Hills Cop

This iconic franchise set the bar high for the buddy cop genre. Beverly Hills Cop stars Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, a rebellious Detroit cop who travels to Beverly Hills under the guise of a vacation, while he works to track down those responsible in a murder investigation from back home. Axel is a fish out of water as he navigates the cultural and procedural landscape of his new surroundings.

Beverly Hills Cop is still one of the best R-rated police comedies, earning a fourth installment titled Axel F forty years later. Murphy's energy is infectious, his comedic chops rising to the occasion to carry a formulaic film that owns its genre without falling victim to clichés. Instead of doom-scrolling for a modern action comedy title, Beverly Hills Cops is an automatic must.

Beverly Hills Cop

6 'bo burnham: inside' (2021), directed by bo burnham.

Bo Burnham: Inside is a must-see comedy special that perfectly captures the absurdity, horror, and comical experience of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recorded, created, and performed by Bo Burnham during the pandemic, the film is both hilarious and hard-hitting, as it highlights the universal struggle of coping with lockdowns and an uncertain world.

The special shows Burnham at his best, with biting social commentary delivered through unique, creative, and often musical performances all seamlessly weaved together to create an entertaining and profound viewing experience. It's a great choice for beginners to the genre, as it's bound to resonate with anyone who recognizes the anxiety, existential dread, and sadness that came with a generation-defining period.

5 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' (2020)

Directed by aaron sorkin.

eddie-redmayne-tom-hayden-the-trial-of-the-chicago-7

Aaron Sorkin 's critically acclaimed second directorial feature falls in line with the classic Sorkin film founded on historical context. The Trial of the Chicago 7 is the story of seven individuals on trial for various charges surrounding the uprising outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

With a star-studded cast of Eddie Redmayne , Sacha Baron Cohen , Mark Rylance , Joseph Gordon-Levitt , and more, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a Netflix original drama that delves into activism and free speech . The film would earn six nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Sorkin, but would take none home. Nonetheless, this historic cinema film deserves a watch by any fan of Sorkin's work and those new to his writing.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

4 'fatal attraction' (1987), directed by adrian lyne.

Michael Douglas and Glenn Close leaning close about to kiss in Fatal Attraction

Gone are the days of browsing video store aisles for classic movies; however, Netflix understood the assignment by adding this six-time Oscar nominee to its current collection. Fatal Attraction stars Michael Douglas as Dan Gallagher, a happily married, on-the-rise lawyer whose lapse in judgment leads him to a one-night stand with a book editor named Alex ( Glenn Close ). When Dan tries to return to his normal life, Alex becomes dangerously obsessive, stalking Dan and his family, and thrusting them all into paranoia and madness.

Fatal Attraction satisfies the need for an addictive, erotic thriller , streaming like a TV series binge session , as audiences can't tear their eyes away from what plays out onscreen. Close earned a Best Actress nomination while the film earned a nod for Best Picture among its other accolades. In the age of streaming originals, returning to the foundational films that set the bar for today's features is a must.

Fatal Attraction

3 'hit man' (2024), directed by richard linklater.

Glen Powell wearing neon blue sunglasses and a backwards camo hat outdoors

The era of Glen Powell has arrived , and it's all over Netflix. He stars as the seemingly ordinary professor, Gary Johnson whose out-of-office-hours activity involves posing as a fake hitman for the New Orleans Police Department, delivering them the individuals who attempt to pay for a hit on their enemies. A chameleon, Gary embodies a cast of personas to charm his way into business without ever actually killing anyone; however, what he doesn't anticipate is when his character, Ron, stumbles into a steamy romance with Madison ( Adria Arjona ), a woman who sought his services.

From the mind of director and co-writer Richard Linklater , Hit Man is one of the best R-rated comedic crime thrillers in Netflix's current catalog, and its slate of original features. Powell continues to prove his multi-genre versatility while providing the perfect popcorn and edge-of-your-seat entertainment .

2 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' (2022)

Directed by daniel kwan and daniel scheinert.

Evelyn Wang with a googly eye on her forehead strikes a pose as paper whirl around her

A cinematic sensation, Everything Everywhere All at Once is one of those films that doesn't come around often. The only thing Evelyn Wang ( Michelle Yeoh ) wants to get through is her business's tax audit; however, the universe has other plans for her as she's thrust into a chaotic mission to save her very existence only by confronting her past decisions through the multiverse of lives she could have lived if she'd chosen differently in crucial moments.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is an unconventional break-up movie, encouraging audiences to part with reality and explore the possibilities of what could've been. The A24 masterpiece swept the Oscars, taking home seven of its eleven nominations, including Best Actress for Yeoh and Best Picture. It's a film you won't be able to explain to anyone, but one that instills a wholehearted understanding within each viewer, making it one of the best R-rated movies on Netflix right now.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

1 'all quiet on the western front' (2022), directed by edward berger.

Paul Bäumer lying on the ground in a battlefield in All Quiet on the Western Front

Directed by Edward Berger and based on the eponymous 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque , All Quiet on the Western Front is an award-winning German epic anti-war film set on the frontlines of World War I. It follows 17-year-old Paul Bäumer's ( Felix Kammerer ) heartbreaking journey after he excitedly enlists in the Imperial German Army alongside his friends, only to find that war isn't what the propagandists say it is.

With nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best International Feature and seven wins during the BAFTAs, it's safe to say that All Quiet on the Western Front has cemented itself as one of the best unflinching war films ever made . Its realistic and harrowing depiction of war, as well as its spectacular set pieces, help set it apart from others in its genre. It's a movie that will leave audiences feeling dread, fear, or even emptiness, and is disturbing and unsettling in an unforgettable way.
