Grad School Memes For Future PhD Recipients
Grad school is one of the craziest things you can willingly subject yourself to. You have to work 16 hours a day on one very specific subject, teach 3 courses, and live off of a $15,000 stipend. Sounds simple enough, right? Grad school is largely different for everyone, but there are certainly different types of postgraduate academics. There are the people who are in it for the long haul, and for the love of the game, aspiring to be academics in school forever. There are those who go into grad school straight after undergrad because they don't know what to do with their lives. There are those purely in it for mercenary reasons, getting that professional degree and scramming as soon as possible. Whatever kind of grad student you are, you're all united by the emotion of suffering. One needs to commiserate with their fellow grad students, and what better way to do that than through memes .

What is difference between PhD and Postdoc?
I am a PhD student in Mathematics. I wanted to know what exactly is the difference between PhD and Postdoc. Is it just the research that one does after PhD(kind of second PhD?)?

I want to address this question by citing my current Master's advisor when I asked him the same question:
- In the Bachelor's, you learn the basics of the area.
- In the Master's, you learn what people are doing in the field and how to read scientific papers.
- As a PhD, you learn how to develop your own research and start having new ideas on the field.
- As a Post-Doc, you learn how to mentor other people's research while producing your own work without supervision.
- When you reach Professorship you only have to look smart!
- 12 No, when you reach full professorship you only have to look smart. There's still "assistant professor" and "associate professor" to get through. – JeffE Commented Mar 4, 2018 at 0:19
- 4 True, this was a very simplistic point of view but useful one I think... – Jsf73 Commented Mar 4, 2018 at 14:13
In mathematics, a "postdoc" is a special kind of faculty job you get just after your Ph.D. It may have a fixed term (not tenure track). It may have reduced teaching, so that you can concentrate on your research. You may have a "mentor" assigned to advise you on doing research.
But (unlike some other fields like experimental physics) you are probably not working in someone else's "lab" on someone else's research program that someone else got the funding for.
I have always understood a postdoc to be a "post doctoral" position, that is a paid post. The idea of a postdoc position is to do research roughly in the area of the PhD, with the person gaining experience that would possibly be of help in gaining a full time position.
- 5 Around here, PhD students also earn wages (unless they support themselves with a grant). – Tommi Commented Mar 5, 2018 at 13:09
The first and foremost difference between the two is that a PhD is "awarded" after defending a thesis (plus additional duties depending on the department). On the other hand, a PostDoc is a temporary working position that is assigned by some institution, whose completion does not require any defence.
What people do or do not do, researchwise, in their PhD and PostDocs is very much dependent on the area and on the department (you may look at other answers that go more in details on this and that I do not want to overwrite, as I would just copy and paste them).
- Yes, please copypaste or give the link. – Philosopher of science Commented Oct 22, 2020 at 11:22
A postdoc is expected to know what they are doing, and to be productive researchers with minimal supervision. PhD students are learning how to be researchers: by the end of the process, they should be on par with a postdoc, but it will take time to get there
Edit: This comment has been copied from Barbara Robson's answer here .
This is akin to asking what's the difference between research master's and PhD, or Assistant to associate professor.
A postdoc, is the next level after PhD (though not a necessary one). This is the main point.
Practically, it is different, in that it is less formal, with less specific requirements, and you are paid for it, as you are employed, not a student, as other answers here explained well.

Every graduate of elite nyc jewish high school avoids columbia for first time in decades.
None of this year’s graduates of an elite Upper East Side Jewish high school will be attending Columbia University’s premier liberal arts college for the first time in decades, at least partly because of antisemitism.
“For the first time in over 20 years, we will not have a Ramaz graduate enrolling in Columbia College,” Ramaz said in a statement Sunday to The Post.
One Ramaz student enrolled at Columbia’s School of General Studies, and three students enrolled in Columbia-affiliated Barnard College for women — but none at the college, it said. Ramaz indicated that anti-Israel protests and hostility toward Jewish students at Columbia during the previous semester had been a factor in its graduates not attending Columbia College.
“Ramaz provides as much information as possible about the situation at various colleges of interest, and we have given priority to issues surrounding the horrific rise in antisemitic instances at some schools, so that our students and their families are able to make informed decisions about which colleges are right for them,” a Ramaz rep said in an email.
Rory Lancman , a top Jewish civil rights activist whose two daughters graduated from Ramaz and who is a Columbia Law School graduate, said he would not recommend that Jewish students apply to or attend Columbia at the moment because of Jew-bashing.
“Jewish families are voting with their feet and choosing colleges and universities that take antisemitism seriously,” said Lancman, a former Queens city councilman and the current director of corporate initiatives and senior counsel at the Louis Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law.
“I would not recommend my daughters to apply to Columbia or other colleges that aren’t committed to protect them as Jews,” he said.
Columbia declined comment to The Post on Sunday.
The Ivy League school in Morningside Heights is still grappling with turmoil that has rocked the institution to its core.
Embattled Columbia president Minouche Shafik resigned last week and is heading back to England after leading the elite institution for the past year, which was marked by constant — and sometimes destructive — anti-Israel protests.
Shafik’s resignation comes just one week after three university deans also resigned from Columbia following the exposure of their “very troubling” text chain that disparaged Israeli and Jewish students’ fears of rising antisemitism on campus.
A huge mob of masked pro-terror rioters broke into a Columbia academic building and seized it in April, draping it with a giant flag calling for “intifada.”
One shocking video captured a hammer-wielding demonstrator smashing through a glass-paneled door and placing what appeared to be a bike lock around its handles.
Hundreds of students were arrested on trespassing charges for refusing to pack up a campus encampment, triggering the building takeover. But many of the vandals, rioters and trespassers afterward escaped criminal charges .
The protests and anti-Israel vitriol was fueled by Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, invasion of Israel, in which the terrorists slaughtered 1,200 people in the Jewish state and triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.

Rice life unveiled: an african’s houston diary, by natalie kokroko. a ghanaian’s perspective on life at rice and in houston.
Dear Diary,
I am thrilled to share my journey as an African PhD student at Rice University, living in the vibrant city of Houston. It has been an incredible experience, full of fun and captivating moments, and I want other Africans to know that they can feel close to home here in Houston. Join me as I explore the sights, sounds, and cultural tapestry that have made my time here unforgettable.
After the excitement of being accepted into Rice University, getting my visa approved, and finally landing in the USA, I faced the reality of making Houston my home for at least the next five years. Leaving my family and cute dog behind in Ghana was tough, but the adventure awaited.
One of the first things I noticed upon arriving was how big everything was—wide roads, big trucks, and fancy cars. It’s true what they say: “Everything is bigger in Texas!”
Fun and Entertainment
You know what blew my mind during my first week here and made me feel right at home? Afrobeats lounges! Discovering them on my first weekend was amazing. Aura, Xhale lounge, Rumors and O2 lounge are a few popular ones I have been to. Afrobeats helps me release stress, so I knew I was in the right place with countless Afrobeat hangouts just around the corner from Rice. Experiencing authentic Afrobeats music here is just like back home in Ghana, where we party till the next morning. Apart from the lounges, almost every weekend comes with an afrobeat/ amapiano party or concert in town, which I usually find while browsing on Instagram or through other friends.
African Food and Shopping Scene
And the food! There are so many excellent African restaurants with good prices and large food portions. They all taste amazing. Even though the Jollof debate is still ongoing, Houston offers delicious and spicy Senegalese, Ghanaian, and Nigerian jollof. We’ll need a separate blog for African food in Houston, but to give you a sneak peek, here are some places I’ve visited: Aria Suya , and Afrikiko Restaurant . There are several African stores like Makola Market , SouthWestFarmers , and Wazobia Market , which have all the African foodstuff and groceries you can think of. It is such a joy to have access to African groceries and foodstuff while over 6000 miles away from home. Rice organizes a lot of events with so much food, like Culture Night , where groups showcase various staples from all around the world.
Being a Christian, on Sundays, I connect spiritually, and it satisfies me to have a Ghanaian church where I can feel close to home. I’ve visited two Ghanaian churches, CPIM and The Church of Pentecost , and from the praise and worship to the sermon, it simply reminds me of home. You also get to connect with other African individuals and families when you visit.
People often ask how I balance exploring Houston and studying at a prestigious school like Rice University. Rice has an amazing work-life balance system, encouraging extracurricular social activities even for graduate students. All these fun experiences wouldn’t have happened if I stayed isolated. I’m an active member of clubs like the Rice African Graduate Student Association (RAGSA), Rice Graduate Christian Felllowship(RGCF), Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA), and Computer Science GSA. I look forward to the RAGSA events because we enjoy African food and culture at Rice. Orientation week social events were a great help, allowing me to meet other Africans and students from around the world. Rice’s international student body is fantastic, and everyone is so friendly and approachable, letting me experience diverse cultures.
I can’t believe it’s been a year already. I’m living my dream, and I can’t wait to see what the next few years of my PhD journey have in store for me.
Watch out for my next blog, “Houston’s Food Scene: An African Foodie at Rice University.”

Stacey Bent, who has completed a five-year term as vice provost for graduate education and postdoctoral affairs, will step down from her position in early 2025. To ensure continuity and to help with the transition, she will stay in the vice provost role while the search for her successor is conducted. She will then return to teaching and research at Stanford.
“It has been a privilege to serve in this role. I’ve had the opportunity to engage with our incredibly talented students and postdocs and, together with dedicated colleagues across the university, help ensure they receive top-quality education and training,” said Bent.
Provost Jenny Martinez praised Bent’s contributions to enhance the lives of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
“We’re grateful to Stacey for her efforts to help our graduate students and postdoctoral scholars have successful and fulfilling experiences at the university in support of their quest to make important contributions to their fields and to our world. Under her leadership, the office has worked effectively and collaboratively across the university to enhance and enrich graduate education and the postdoctoral experience at Stanford,” said Martinez.
Highlights of Bent’s tenure as vice provost include the launch of several initiatives to address the costs of graduate education. Among those is the Research, Action, and Impact through Strategic Engagement fellowship program (RAISE), developed in collaboration with the Haas Center and Stanford Impact Labs, which supports doctoral students across disciplines who want to pursue community-engaged work.
She also helped secure enhanced financial packages for graduate students and postdocs, which include a funding commitment for all doctoral students for 12 months over the first five years of their doctoral program; an increase in family grant programs to pay for childcare and other expenses for grad students and postdocs; and an increase in the Cardinal Care subsidy to 100% for all graduate students with support through fellowships and/or TA positions.
In support of postdocs, Bent also helped initiate the PRISM Baker postdoctoral fellowships, a pilot program for researchers in academic fields across the university from identity groups underrepresented in academia who are working to develop research independence. In addition, she oversaw the launch of a new transitional housing pilot program for postdocs.
Bent has made many other contributions as a Stanford leader. During the pandemic, she participated as a member of the COVID-19 Academic Policy Group to set pandemic response policies for the university, and co-led, with former Dean of Research Kam Moler, the COVID Academic Policy Group Research Recovery Team.
Former Provost Persis Drell, who appointed Bent in 2019, characterized her as “a great university citizen.”
“Stacey was an effective member of the executive cabinet and an essential partner during the difficult years of the pandemic,” said Drell. “While we were ‘shut down’ Stanford was still home to thousands of graduate students who had unique support needs. As part of the academic policy group, Stacey made sure those needs were met where possible.”
“In addition, Stacey was a core member of the IDEAL team working to ensure that we better prepare all students, including those from diverse backgrounds and experiences, for future careers in academia and elsewhere. I have always admired her clarity of thought in analyzing complex situations, and her courage and strength in the face of challenges,” said Drell.
More about Stacey Bent

Bent was appointed vice provost of graduate education and postdoctoral affairs in 2019. She previously served as senior associate dean for faculty and academic affairs in the School of Engineering from 2016 to 2019. Prior to that, she was chair of the Chemical Engineering Department, the first female chair of the department. Bent also served as the inaugural director of the TomKat Center for Sustainable Energy and has served in that position for 10 years. She has been teaching at Stanford since 1998. She holds a PhD in chemistry from Stanford and a BS in chemical engineering from UC Berkeley.
Bent’s research lab focuses on understanding and controlling surface and interfacial chemistry and applying this knowledge to a range of problems in semiconductor processing, micro- and nano-electronics, nanotechnology, and sustainable and renewable energy.
“I’m eager to return my attention more fully to advancing our exciting research and having more time to teach. I also look forward to having more flexibility in my schedule that will allow me to spend time with my family,” said Bent.

Once upon a time labs would hire "research assistants", which someone with a master8s degree would be very competitive for. Such positions do still exist, but as funding levels have diminished in recent years, and numbers of graduate students has gone up, RAs have tended to be the first positions cut from grant proposals, while maintaining postdoc positions.
The first and foremost difference between the two is that a PhD is "awarded" after defending a thesis (plus additional duties depending on the department). On the other hand, a PostDoc is a temporary working position that is assigned by some institution, whose completion does not require any defence. What people do or do not do, researchwise ...
