Interning is a great opportunity to gain valuable work experience, put your knowledge into practice and meet people in your chosen field. These organisations in the Amsterdam Area will help get you started.

Types of internships

There are several different types of internships that you can take on as a student or graduate:

- Internship during study. This involves spending one semester working at a company as part of a team. The egalitarian culture in the Netherlands means that you will usually get a lot of responsibilities and gain valuable experience (it’s not all just photocopying!). This type of internship begins with an agreement between the university and the company about the types of projects you will work on to best benefit your study.

- Writing your thesis at a company. Over the course of a semester, you can meet with a company and write your thesis on a topic that is relevant to their business. This gives you the chance to address a real industry problem (and demonstrate your problem-solving abilities to potential employers) with access to considerable resources and contacts.

- Post-graduate internship. Many corporations offer paid internships to recent graduates. Often you will join a group of talented interns in a programme designed to teach you about the different departments and the company’s strategic challenges. This is an excellent way to figure out which part of the company your skills are best suited to.

Opportunities for interns

Did you know that there are more than 500 European and global headquarters in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area? In addition, Dutch companies are among the world's most internationally minded businesses, meaning there is a large pool of potential employers that you can make an impression on. Remember that many companies are willing to take on enthusiastic interns, but don’t necessarily advertise the positions. It is well worth getting in touch with companies that you would like to work for one day – in any case, they will be impressed with your initiative.

Internships at the City of Amsterdam

The City of Amsterdam (Gemeente Amsterdam) has plenty of opportunities for interns. In fact, over 1,800 students a year undertake internships at the organisation. 

The City of Amsterdam has seven city districts: Centre, Nieuw-West, Noord, Oost, West, Zuid and Zuidoost. Each district has its own City Office (stadsloket) that mainly focuses on city policies such as passport and permit applications, but they also work on implementing the city’s social healthcare, youth, employment and housing policies.

International internships are typically in departments such as spatial planning and sustainability, city archiving and economics, and every intern is assigned to a mentor and programme that matches their educational background. Things to do before you start your internship

There are many formalities to settle before your internship can begin. Start with organizing your visa and residence or work permit. If the internship is an essential part of your studies, you do not require a work permit. Instead, your Dutch employer simply needs to sign an internship agreement with your university or college. Information on internships

Bachelor's thesis.

The Bachelor's also called internship or graduation project thesis is the conclusion of the Bachelor's program and is an aptitude test. You demonstrate that you can apply the knowledge and skills in the field of experimentation, use of theoretical models, data analysis, oral and written presentation that are discussed in the bachelor's phase, in a project of any size. The Bachelor thesis can also give you insight into which field of work you find interesting. 

Bachelor - Approval

• You must register for the Bachelor's thesis via the registration module .
• If you have found a possible spot or have questions about the search process, please contact the coordinator.
• Before you can start your bachelor's thesis, you need approval for the project and the supervisors and there are admission requirements that you must meet.
• The approval must be given by the coordinator. For this you need to fill in a number of forms and hand them in to the coordinator.
• Make sure to submit the forms before the deadline.
• Information about the approval of the Bachelor's thesis is described in the manual and the study guide . 

Bachelor - An internship abroad

In many cases, finding a graduation project takes place through contacts within the various research departments. Because they do not just send students abroad (you are their calling card) it can be an advantage to do a project in that department first. You can also try to approach an institution yourself, for example through the various organizations for international exchange connections. Organizing a research project abroad takes a lot of time. So start the preparations early!

• For information and grants you can visit the 'Internship and graduation project' page .
• Always discuss your plans to study abroad with the coordinator of the bachelor's thesis in advance.
• Sometimes you as a student have to submit a statement (depending on the destination where you will do an internship). 

Bachelor - Internship report and assessment

You complete the bachelor's thesis with a report / article / report on which you give an oral presentation. Additional criteria may exist for each specialization that the report must meet. Consult the manual and / or the coordinator for this.

The final assessment is done by two examiners, both of whom must work at the VU or VUmc. The following are included in the assessment:

• Report / article / report
• Oral presentation
• Implementation of the research project

The regulations for all internships, research projects, internships and theses can be found in the BETA Thesis- and placements regulations and in the manual of the Bachelor's thesis in Canvas. You are advised to read these regulations before the start of the internship or research. 

Bachelor - When and for how long?

• The bachelor's thesis is the conclusion of the bachelor's program and is a compulsory component.
• The scope varies per course, but usually takes a few months.
• Information about the duration and period of the bachelor thesis can be found in the course catalog and the bachelor thesis manual in Canvas.

Finding a place where you can do your bachelor's thesis can take a few months, so start your search early! In the manual you will find information on how to best search. The coordinator gives information meetings in which this is also discussed.

Master - Approval

Before you can start an internship:

• You need approval for your chosen topic and tutors.
• You must meet certain requirements. Your training coordinator will check whether this is the case.
• Further information on the application procedure and getting internship approval can be found in the the BETA Thesis- and placements regulations and in the manuals in Canvas. You are advised to read these regulations before the start of the internship or research. 

Master - Graduation project

The internship is an important part of the Master because it brings together many different aspects: preparation, implementation, literature study, report writing, oral presentation and the experience of being part of a research group. The internship is the last part of the Master. The purpose of an internship is to train students to conduct scientific research in a typical "on the job" session. The internship can also give you insight into which field of work you find interesting.

Master - An internship abroad

In many cases, finding an internship takes place through contacts within the various research departments. Because they don't just send students abroad (you are their calling card) it can be an advantage to do a project in that department first. You can also try to approach an institution yourself, for example through the various organizations for international exchange connections. Organizing a research internship abroad takes a lot of time. So start early with the preparations!

• You will find more information about the graduation project in the internship scheme .
• Projects at universities and research institutes can only be approved if the academic quality of the institute is sufficient and supervision is available.
• When arranging an internship abroad, also consider housing, visa, vaccinations and financing.
• If you have any questions about the above practical matters or would like to apply for a scholarship, please contact the VU International Office .
• Discuss your plans for an internship abroad in advance with your study program coordinator or internship coordinator.
• An Erasmus grant is available for many projects outside the Netherlands but within Europe.

Master - Internship report and assessment

Each Master has its own conditions for the report. These conditions can be found in the study guide, in the manual in Canvas or consult your study program coordinator

• You complete the internship with a report / article / report on which you give an oral presentation.
• There may be various criteria that the report must meet for each Master. Consult the manual for this.
• The final assessment is done by two examiners, both of whom must work at the VU or VUmc.
• Attitude and professional development
• Final version report

All conditions for the assessment are stated in the BETA Thesis- and placements regulations.

Master - When and for how long?

• Information on "when and for how long" can be found in the course catalog  and Internship Guide on Canvas.
• Organizing an internship abroad takes a lot of time (maybe even months). So start the preparations early!
• In the internship report you will find information about how to find an internship and what conditions the internship must meet. Your training coordinator can also provide information.
• Make sure you register for the 'internship / research project' course via the registration module .

Next to writing your thesis, you will become an integral part of a dynamic team of seasoned M&A professionals and get broad exposure to origination and execution of M&A transactions across a wide range of sectors. You will particularly spend time on:

• Financial modelling and company valuation;
• Preparing pitch documents and information memoranda;
• Performing market analyses and researching industry trends.

We also offer an academy program on modelling, valuation, deal structuring and more. Besides M&A, you will also be able assist Vondel Private Equity, our private equity branch, in analysing new investment opportunities.

Successful interns may be offered the chance to join the team as full-time analyst.

What we look for

You are in the final stages of your MSc studies, preferably with a background in (business) economics, finance, engineering, econometrics or related and are available for 4 to 6 months.

You have proficiency in both English and Dutch, a hands-on attitude, positive energy and proven affinity with the financial world. Moreover, you have an entrepreneurial mindset and strong numerical and communication skills.

In November each year, Amsterdam Data Science organises a thesis fair where companies are able to meet and match with students enrolled in the Data Science Master Track . This match-making event is an excellent opportunity for students to find the right project for them and companies to find the students they need.

Additionally, our University partners offer a number of outlets, for example:

For Internships:

• Student Projects Page, Information Sciences,  UvA:  Helps students and organisations to find each other, so that together they will make great graduation projects happen. As organisations offer their proposals for projects, students will be able to browse, discuss, and select projects of their choice. We host annual Thesis Fair events, where organisations can be present to meet student. Speeddating sessions are organised to match students with their favorite organisations and projects.
• VU Internship Office:  The Internship Office for Mathematics and Computer Science at the VU maintains contacts with organisations in various sectors and industries. Some organisations notify of vacancies and projects, but many select their internship students on the basis of open applications.
• Master of Computational Science Projects, UvA-VU: Website showing the available student projects options and contact details for Computational Bio-Medicine, Computational Biology, Computational Finance, Complex Systems Theory, and Urban Complex System students at the UvA and VU.

For Vacancies:

• AUAS (HvA):  Check out the list of internship bureaus of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool van Amsterdam).
• Job Board, UvA:   A platform where you can post vacancies for jobs and internships free of charge. The Job board is exclusively available to UvA students and recent graduates in all fields.
• VIA, UvA:   Check out the VIA pages for available internships, part time jobs and jobs for young professionals or if you would like to post a vacancy. VIA is a study association for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Information Science students at the UvA.
• STORM, VU:  Check out the STORM pages for internships, part-time jobs and jobs for young professionals. STORM is the study association of the departments Mathematics and Informatics from the Faculty of the Exact Sciences at the Free University in Amsterdam.
• StudiStartupJob:  Is an initiative of StudiJob,  StartupAmsterdam  and  IXA . A recruitment agency that specialises in helping Amsterdam’s university ( UvA ,  HvA  and  VU ) students find part-time jobs. StudiStartupJob enables students to do relevant, paid, knowledge-intensive work in addition to their studies.
• Amsterdam Science Park Vacancies and Internships:   A growing number of life science and high tech companies are choosing Amsterdam Science Park as their home base. To allow them to make optimal use of the available talent pool of Faculty of Science and AUC students, an online matching portal went live. The website also allows students to search for internships and vacancies at companies and research institutes located at Amsterdam Science Park.

Whatever your background or interests, and whether you want to gain work experience or write a thesis, with more than 500 internship vacancies per year, there is sure to be a suitable internship for you! 

Would you like to come into contact with customers and do you like to carry out risk analyses? Then you can think of an internship at Private Banking. Would you like to graduate from doing a Master's degree in, for example, Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence? Then there are plenty of interesting challenges waiting for you within our Innovation or I&T teams. We still have a world to gain on many fronts, and your critical and fresh view is appreciated. 

With us you are not just another intern, but you fully participate in the team like any other colleague. You get a lot of responsibility, but we also expect some proactivity in return. Of course we provide you with proper guidance and through Club ABN AMRO Stagiaires (CASt), the association for interns of ABN AMRO, you can attend various activities to get to know the bank and your fellow interns better.

Internship fee

An internship is not only very valuable for you. We are also very pleased with your fresh perspective and innovative ideas. Of course there is a compensation for that. From 1 September 2023, the allowance for an MBO, HBO or WO internship will be €750 per month (based on a 36-hour working week).

During your internship at ABN AMRO you must be registered with a training institute. This can be a secondary vocational education, college or university.

Me? Work for a bank? It doesn’t make any sense!

It didn’t exactly feature on her wish list: being an intern at our bank. And yet third-year student Keisha is chuffed to walk around our Amsterdam head offices, confounding all her expectations: "I was like: I’m a social work student, how would I end up at ABN AMRO? It doesn’t make any sense!"

Industrial Placement

If your degree requires a year in industry, or if you’re looking for a year’s work experience, this placement can give you 12 months of valuable business know-how.

Working within our Assurance, Tax, Transactions or Consulting practices, you’ll be performing a role similar to that of a new graduate. From the outset, you’ll be working on real client projects and will contribute to a variety of work across a range of sectors.

It’s good to  apply  early as positions are limited and we’re always over-subscribed.

Global student experience program

Few things broaden your horizons like living and working in a different country, which is why the global student experience program offers international assignments in major cities around the globe. Immersing yourself in a new culture and challenges gives you the opportunity to grow by collaborating with people of diverse backgrounds — both professionally and culturally.

The four-week program starts in your home office before transferring to another EY office overseas; then you’ll come home to finish up your internship. Flights, housing and work visa costs will be paid for by EY.
