So, when Shyam resists having to join his family in making the plates and bowls they eat from, and does a shoddy job, a tack slips out while he is eating from a plate he has made and sticks in his throat. His mother tells him that he should make plates that anyone would enjoy eating from and till he learns to do that, he must eat out of the plates he makes.

It’s a simple lesson and safe advice, and soon results in Shyam making plates that draw admiring comments from his father. When his sister gives him an apricot, Shyam muses that it tasted very sweet, because ‘sweetness doesn’t belong entirely to the thing itself. It also comes from the work you have done to earn it. True happiness comes from doing the work well.’

As inspiring as the stories, is the foreword by Jerry Pinto, who speaks directly to the young reader who may have picked up the book to browse through it.

With the first few lines which begin with ‘Hi, I like you very much already. You are reading. That’s a good sign’, Jerry ensures his reader is motivated to read the book, at least one story at a time.

Ranjit Desai was born in 1928 in Kolhapur, India. He is a well-known Marathi author and was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award and Padma Shri.

Desai has authored several short stories, plays, and novels. He was particularly renowned for his mastery of the historical-fiction genre. Two of his best-known historical novels are Swami and Shriman Yogi .

Desai breathed his last in 1992.

Vikrant Pande translated Desai’s Marathi novel, Shriman Yogi , into English. It was titled Shivaji: The Great Maratha . An IIM-B alumnus, Pande is credited with the translation of several historical novels. After pursuing a successful corporate career, he is now working in the education sector.

Shivaji: The Great Maratha is a fictionalized biography of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj based on historical events.

The novel chronicles the life of Shivaji from his birth to death. The story begins from Shivaji’s tumultuous childhood and depicts how he became the greatest Maratha ruler of all time. Other important characters in this book include Jijabai, Sai, Shivaji’s sons, and his loyal courtiers and warriors.

The author has brilliantly driven home the fact that Shivaji was a master strategist who kept the wicked Mughals on their toes. His encounters with the Mughal armies, including his illustrious escape from Agra, are well documented in the novel.

Yugandhar by Shivaji Sawant – Book Review

I bought Yugandhar way back in 2003 when it first came in the Hindi edition. I knew it would demand a lot of time given its 1000-odd pages and a very small font. However, Krishna as a subject has always interested me, so I knew I would sit and read it. However, it took me a good 15 years to do that. Maybe this was the right time to read this book. I visited Dwarka earlier this year and that kind of made me curious about how it would have been described in our scriptures.

I read a couple of small books on travel and found them inadequate and not researched. Then, I found Yugandhar smiling in my library with a Peetambari or yellow spine.

Yugandhar by Shivaji Sawant

The size of the book scared me. I decided to not think about it, but the book weighed equally on my hands holding it for reading. Having said that, I loved the book.

Yugandhar begins with the end, and then in a flashback, it tells the story of Sri Krishna through different persons in his life, including himself. The author Shivaji Sawant also talks about the story and why he chose certain characters to tell the story. He explains things like people who were emotionally close to Krishna, the sister at Gokul who is often not spoken about, the relationship he shares with Water, and the other men who also share a special relationship with Water.

While Krishna describes his childhood in Gokul and his days in Mathura and Sandipini Ashram in Avanti, others tell the story of the rest of his life. Rukmini tells the tale of her marriage to Sri Krishna and the building of Dwarka near the western coast of India. She introduces you to all her 7 co-wives and how they live on the Bet Dwarka island. Daruk – the Charioteer tells the tale of his wanderings and the various wars he fought. You get to see not hear as Daruk. Draupadi – his friend and confidante tells the story as he appears in the life of Pandavas, Hastinapur, and Indraprastha.

You walk the various forests of India through her story. Satyaki – his commander in chief talks about the wars fought and strategies laid.

Buy Yugandhar by Shivaji Sawant in Hindi, Marathi or English

Arjun talks about his friendship, devotion, and of course, the war where he received the famous lessons on Dharma. In the end, Udhdhav, his cousin and most intimate friend talks about Krishna as a true devotee, as someone who has lived like his shadow. He is also the one who was with him till the last minute.

Voices have been chosen very carefully and intelligently. Each narrator brings his or her own Rasa into the story.

It feels like the author of Yugandhar is trying to understand or demystify Sri Krishna by trying to understand him through the eyes of the people who lived with him, who potentially understood him partially if not fully. In the end, he wonders if anyone really understood him. The answer is an obvious No.

There are a few gaps in the telling. When Krishna moves from Gokul to Mathura, he already knows about every king and every kingdom while there is no mention of him learning about them anytime in Gokul. In Dwarka, I heard a lot of stories about Durwasa Rishi, he gets a mention only towards the end. In my understanding, his ashram was close to Dwarka and he visited Dwarka quite often. Similarly, many of the Kamrupi women had children in Dwarka, the author never clarified if they were the children of Sri Krishna.

Overall, the story is very tight. The miracles as and when they happen in the story are either rationalized or underplayed. The author is definitely writing for the age of rational logical people.

Sri Krishna

What I gathered towards the end of this huge multi-faceted story is that Krishna did everything for everyone who is a part of the story. However, he never came close to his own children. While he put the world in order for Pandavas, he forgot that his own sons too need the same knowledge to be good human beings. It was his sons’ conduct that led to the decline of Yadavas. Did he fail as a father? Potentially yes.

Sri Krishna also comes across as someone who can connect the dots very easily. He is able to see things in a manner that he can zoom out and see a larger picture and then zoom in and see the minute details that matter. Above all, he knew how to care for people and that is the only way people listen to you. Well, that’s your best bet for managing people.

Another aspect of Krishna that Yugandhar brings out very clearly is his outlook towards women – be it women in his family or the women who are tortured in the faraway kingdom. You also learn that you do not have to be a king to be treated like one. You rule when you take responsibility and lead people from the front.

Language is good but you can see that it is not the original language in which the book was written.

If Krishna and his life interest you, it is a must-read book for you, but be prepared for some marathon reading.

I have this book. I got it when I was on a book collection spree around Mahabharata, and felt inspired to read it in Hindi. But it has been lying with me for many years, may be because it needs good amount of time to read. Thanks for the review.

Reema – I had this book for more than 10 years and it is now that I gathered the courage to pick it up and read. It is demanding.

Your review has piqued my interest even further, (had read Sawant sir’s Mrityunjay in English back in 2012 or thereabouts and had loved it immensely). But I am a bit confused as to which one should I choose – there are two English translated versions, one by Mehta Publishing House (the one you have shared, but it is currently unavailable) and the other by Eka Publishers currently available on amazon.

You can go ahead with English translation by Mehta Publishers. However if you can read Hindi or any Indian language, I always suggest reading in it.

कुठलंही पुस्तक वाचून झाल्यावर स्वाभाविकच मी काही प्रश्न स्वतःला विचारतो. या पुस्तकातून मला काय घेता आलं? या पुस्तकाने मला काय दिलं? मात्र कधी कधी उत्तर शोधायची धडपड असूनही ते अनेकदा सापडत नाही. मनही हवं असलेलं उत्तर कधी कधी देत नाही. कारण खोलवर कुठेतरी त्या पुस्तकाने मनाचा ठाव घेतलेला असतो. ‛रावण – राजा राक्षसांचा लेखक श्री. शरद तांदळे’ यांच्या कादंबरीचंही अगदी तसंच आहे.

ही कादंबरी मी तीन वेळा वाचली. पण प्रत्येक वेळी ती मला अगदी नवीनच भासली. सर्व पात्रांची पुन्हा नव्याने ओळख झाली.

असंख्य जाती, जमाती रावणाच्या साम्राज्यात सुखनैव नांदत होत्या. त्याने स्वतःची राक्षस संस्कृती उभी केली होती. त्याच्या राज्यात प्रत्येकाला राहायला, स्वतःची जात, धर्म, संस्कृती जपण्याचा, विचार मांडण्याचा हक्क, अधिकार होता. मुक्त, स्वातंत्र्य होतं.

आजोबा, मामा, आई, मावशी, बंधू, भगिनींना आणि साम्राज्यातील जनतेला सुख, समाधान, स्थेर्य देत सोन्याचं घर बांधून देणारा रावण हा एकमेवच राजा असेल. रावण एक मातृभक्त, महान शिवभक्त, आज्ञाधारक शिष्य, विख्यात ज्ञान पंडित, जवाबदार बंधू, लढावू वृत्तीचा जिद्दी योद्धा, प्रेमळ पती, मार्गदर्शक पिता अश्या अनेक रक्तांच्या नात्यातील उपाध्यांनी बांधला गेलेला प्रगतशील विचारांचा कुशल राज्यकर्ता होता.

दशग्रीव ते रावण राजा राक्षसांचा असा घडलेला वाखण्याजोगा त्याचा प्रवास लेखकाने अत्यंत खुबीने यात लिहला आहे. अनेक रूपांत नाविन्याचा शोध घेत लेखकाने रावणाचे व्यक्तिचित्रण केलं आहे. रावणाच्या व्यक्तिमत्वाचे नव्याने पैलू उलगडून त्याच रुपडं पालटल्यालं चित्र या कादंबरीत या कादंबरीकाराणे सुस्पष्ट शब्दांत अधोरेखित केलं आहे…!

“दुष्ट, कपटी, खुनशी, पाताळयंत्री” या यादीत आजवर ज्या रावणाला गणलं गेलं, त्या यादीतील बहुतांश उपमा या कादंबरीत कादंबरीकाराने खोडून काढल्या आहेत. परिस्थितीच्या फेऱ्यात गुरफटलेलं त्याचं जीवन नियतीचे अनेक फटकारे आजवर खात होतं, “रावण: राजा राक्षसांचा” या कादंबरीत श्री.शरद तांदळे या लेखकाच्या लेखणीने त्याच्या आयुष्याचा सारा लेखाजोखाच मांडला आहे.

रावणाच्या आयुष्याचं सार त्यांनी मुक्त हस्ताने कादंबरी लिखित करून त्याच्या वेदनेची उणीव भरून काढली आहे,. त्याच्या मनातील खंत नव्या स्वरूपात व्यक्त केली आहे.

अनार्य दासीपुत्र असल्याने तो आर्य होऊ शकत नाही. स्वतः जन्माला घातलेल्या पोरापेक्षा धर्माला महत्व देणाऱ्या धर्मनितीने त्याच्या बालमनावर झालेला परिणाम, कर्तृत्वार नाही तर कुळावर श्रेष्ठत्व ठरवणाऱ्या लोकांकडून त्याच्या पदरी पडलेली उपेक्षा, अहवेलना, अपमान त्या बाल्यावस्थेतुन क्रूरतेकडे होऊ घातलेल्या त्याचा प्रवास यात शब्दबद्ध केला आहे.

ही कादंबरी वाचून मनांत भाव-भावनांचा कल्लोळ होतो. देवादी देव इंद्रदेवांना बंदिस्त करणारा रावण अनेक ठिकाणी कुतूहल जागं करतो. ‛रक्ष इति राक्षस’ लोकांचं रक्षण करणारी जमात म्हणजे राक्षस! स्वकर्तुत्वाने सोन्याच्या लंकेसारखं बलाढ्य साम्राज्य उभं करून सर्वांना समानता देण्याचं काम तो करतो याने त्याचं कौतुक वाटतं…!

रावणासारखा आप्तांवर, बंधुवर निर्व्याज प्रेम करणारा भाऊ असावा…

कुंभकर्णासारखा रावणाच्या प्रत्येक निर्णयात पाठराखण करणारा पाठीराखा असावा…पण…

बिभीषणासारखा निर्वाणीच्या वेळेला साथ सोडणारा घरभेदी कोणालाही असू नये…!

असे अनेक किंतु, परंतु, यथामती, यथाशक्ती कादंबरीत वर्णिलेले आहेत. यातील युद्धाचे प्रसंग तर अंगावर शहारे आणतात.

‛मी मरणार नाही’ हे वाक्य तर कायमच प्रेरणा देतं. आई कैकसीने दिलेलं ध्येय, सुमाली, पौलत्स्य आजोबांनी दाखवलेली प्रकाशाची वाट, प्रहस्त मामाने लढण्याची दिलेली उर्मी, भावांचे वैचारिक संभाषण, स्वतःशी संवाद करत खेळलेलं बौद्धिक द्वंद्व, ब्रम्हदेवाचे मार्गदर्शन, नारदमुनींचा सल्ला, महादेवांनी दिलेली संघर्ष करण्याची प्रेरणा, पुत्र मेघनादाला स्वतःच कौशल्य वाढवण्यासाठी स्वतःच्या क्षमतेशी संघर्ष करायला जागं करणारा प्रेरणादाई पित्याचा मुलाशी संवाद तर एक संदेश आहे…असे असंख्य उल्हसित करणारे रोमहर्षक प्रसंग या कादंबरीत लेखकाने यथोचित रेखाटले आहेत.

रावण हा विषय तसा खुपसा उपेक्षित आणि बराचसा अनपेक्षित राहिला होता. पण इतिहासात अन्याय झालेल्या रावण या व्यक्तिरेखेला खऱ्या अर्थाने या लेखकाच्या न्याय बुद्धीने या कादंबरीत न्याय मिळवून दिला आहे – हीच खरी या लेखकांच्या साचेबद्ध लेखणीची किमया आहे. या त्यांच्या कल्पनेला सलाम आहे.

बिभिषण हा रामाला जाऊन मिळणार, त्यासोबत आपले, आपल्या राज्याचे गुपितंही जाणार आहेत हे ज्ञात असूनही फक्त आईला दिलेल्या वचनाला जागणारा तत्ववादी पुत्र रावण त्याला कोणतीही शिक्षा करत नाही. समोर अनितीने लढणारे असूनही शास्त्रा बरोबर शस्त्राच्या ज्ञानात पारंगत असलेला रावण स्वतः मात्र आपले नीतीची नियम मोडत नाही. रावणाला पराजित करण्यासाठी कपटनितीचा आधार घ्यावा लागतो हाच रावणाचा विजय आहे, यांतच त्याचं खरं सामर्थ्य दिसून येतं.

– असे अनेक प्रश्न, विचार, समज, अपसमज मनात घोळत राहतात.

स्त्रीवर शस्त्र उचलणं हा त्याकाळी अधर्म होता. सीतेचं अपहरण रावणाने केलं तर अधर्म होतो तर मग त्याची भगिनी शूर्पणखेचे कान, नाक कापले हा कोणता धर्म..? नि ही कोणती धर्मनिती..? एकाचं पुण्य आणि रावणाचंच पाप हा एकास एक न्याय कसा काय ठरू शकतो?दूषणाबरोबर दंडकारण्यात १४ हजार सैन्य, राम-लक्ष्मण या बंधूंच्या हातून मारलं गेलं. ह्यावरून, ते निश्चित धुरंधर योद्धे आहेत हे लक्षात घेऊन रावणाने त्याचवेळी सावध पवित्रा घ्यायला हवा होता. पण तो त्याने का घेतला नाही..? अश्या कित्येक उलट सुलट प्रश्नांचा, विचारांचा भस्मासुर डोक्यात घोंगावू लागतो.

आजवर कुठल्याच पुस्तकात न कळलेला रावण या कादंबरीत अनेक अंगांनी अगदी भरभरून बोलला आहे. अर्थातच तो शरद सरांनी बोलता केला आहे.

नवनिर्मिती ही आनंद देत असते. रावण स्वतःच्या ताकदीच्या जोरावर एवढं मोठं साम्राज्य उभारतो. लंका निर्माण करतो. आयुर्वेदाचा गाढा अभ्यासक असलेला रावण हा व्यापारी, व्यावसायिक असतो. दर्शन, राज्यशास्त्र आदी विषयात पांडित्य मिळवूनही विध्वंसक, दुष्टच का?

शिवतांडव स्त्रोत्र रचणारा, रुद्रवीणा, बुद्धिबळ, रावणसंहीता, कुमारतंत्र हे तयार करून ज्ञानार्जन करणारा रावण खलनायक कसा? असे कित्येक निरुत्तरीत प्रश्न या कादंबरीत उत्तरीत तर होतातच, पण काही रावणाच्या उदार अंतःकरणावर विचार करायला भाग पाडतात.

जसे की शेवटच्या क्षणी तो लक्ष्मणाचे शिष्यत्व स्वीकारून त्याला मार्गदर्शनपर संदेश देतो. हा रावणाचा विचार आपल्या दृष्टिकोनात नव्याने भर घालतो. काही प्रसंग तर अगदी कायमचे मनाला स्पर्शून राहतात. राक्षस संस्कृतीत आईला मारणं हा सर्वात मोठा गुन्हा आणि आईचा शब्द हा प्रमाण असेल – असा मातृभक्त असलेला रावण, महादेवाचा निस्सीम भक्त होता. महादेवाच्या भेटीचं वर्णन तर अगदी पराकोटीचं सुरेख आहे. हा प्रसंग वाचकाला साक्षात महादेव भेटीची अनुभूती देतो. ब्रम्हदेवाच्या आश्रमाचे, कैलासाचे, निसर्गाचे वर्णन तर अप्रतिमच!

आई कैकसी, आजोबा सुमालीच्या मृत्यू नंतर आपल्या पुत्र मेघनादाचा डोळ्यासमोर मृत्यू झाल्याने एका पित्याचे काय हाल होतात ती हळहळ वाचून हृदयाला पीळ पडतो. लंकेत प्रत्येकाला जगण्याचं, धर्माचं, विचार मांडण्याचं स्वातंत्र्य आहे, तर मग मला माझ्या पती सोबत सती जायचं आहे…‛मला मरण्याचं स्वातंत्र्य हवंय’ हे सुलोचनेचं वाक्य हदरवून टाकतं. अश्या प्रसंगाचे वर्णनं तर आपली मती गुंग करतात.

वामानाच्या कपटाला भुलून महान बनण्याच्या अभिलाषेपोटी बळींनं स्वतःचं राज्य दान दिलं. ‛राजा हा राज्याचा विश्वस्त असतो मालक नाही’ हे आचार्य शुक्राचार्यांनी वामनाचे कपट बळीला समजून सांगूनही बळींनं ते ऐकलं नाही, म्हणून वामनाने त्यांना ‛झारीतले शुक्राचार्य’ म्हटलं. तेही आजवर आचार्यांना त्याच नावाने हिणवलं जातं.

‛बुद्धीमान आहेस तर कर्तृत्वाने प्रमाण दे’ हा आचार्यांनी रावणाला दिलेला सल्ला आपलं स्वत्वं जागं करून आपल्यात सकारत्मक बदल घडवून आणतो. ‛जगण्यासाठी मला श्रेष्ठत्व हवंय’ अशी प्रेरणादायी गर्भवाक्य मनाला भारून उभारी देणारे आहेत. ‛स्वातंत्र्य हा राक्षस संस्कृतीचा पाया आहे पण त्या सांस्कृतीत जोडीदार निवडीण्याचा अधिकार कुठं आहे? खऱ्या स्वातंत्र्यामध्ये जोडीदार निवडीचाही अधिकार असतो’ हा कुंभीसनीचा नवा विचार संस्कृतीत नवी भर घालताना दिसतो. ‛ज्या धर्माच्या धारणा कालानुरूप बदलत नाहीत तो धर्म गुलामांची फौंज तयार करत असतो’ असे परिवर्तनीय विचार लेखकाने रावणाचा तोंडुन वदवून घेणं वाचक मनाला विचार करायला भाग पाडणारे आहेत.

मेघनाद, अक्षयकुमार, खर, दूषण, प्रहस्त, कुंभकर्ण, महोदर, महापार्श्व यांना युद्धांत आलेल्या मृत्यूवर मंदोदरीचा रावणाशी झालेला पराजयातील कारणांचा संवाद उल्लेखनीय आहे. पण ‛उशिरा सुचलेलं शहाणपण हे फक्त शोकांतिकाच देत असतं’ हेच यातून सिद्ध होतं. हा संवाद वाचकाला वेळीच सावध करतो, हे तत्व आत्मसात करून आत्मभान जागृत करतो – हीच या लेखकाच्या लेखणीचं तेजस्वी व देखणं कसब आहे. त्याची ताकद आहे.

‛लक्ष्मणा, तुझ्या भावाला सांग, दोन बुद्धीमान पुरुषांनी संवाद न करता लढलं तर त्यात धूर्त आणि लबाड लोकांचा फायदा होत असतो. जसा सुग्रीव आणि बिभीषणाचा होणार आहे. कपटी लोकांचा आधार घेऊन मिळालेला विजय निराशेच्या गर्तेत नेत असतो’

हे रावणाचं वाक्य रामायणाचे आयाम बदलून टाकणारं आहे.

शरद सरांनी आपला ऐन उमेदीचा काळ ही कादंबरी लिखित करायला दिला आहे. त्यांच्या ४ वर्षाच्या दीर्घ चिंतन चाळणीतुन, गाढया अभ्यासातून रावणाला न्याय देणारी ‛रावण – राजा राक्षसांचा’ ही आजच्या तरुण पिढीला मार्गदर्शक असणारी, पिढीवर सकारात्मक परिणाम करणारी साहित्यकृती निर्माण झाली आहे. हे त्यांचं पहिलं-वहीलंचं पुस्तक आहे. एक वाचकस्नेही म्हणून मला शरद सरांचा अभिमान वाटतोय.

रावण खराच राजा होता. रावण दहनात मी या आधी कधीच सहभागी नव्हतो. पण या पुढे तर निश्चितच विचाराने पण सहभागी नसेन. विविध अंगांनी अनेक ढंगांनी या कादंबरीतील प्रसंगांचा लपंडावं मनाला भुरळ घालतो. पुस्तकांवर प्रेम करणाऱ्या माझ्या सारख्या पुस्तक प्रेमींसाठी ही कादंबरी लिखित करून वाचकांना पुन्हा एकदा लेखक आणि पुस्तकांच्या प्रेमात पाडलं, त्यात आणखी भर पडली आहे, त्याबद्दल सरांचे एक वाचक म्हणून मानावे तेवढे आभार थोडेच आहेत…!

‛अन्यायात दडपल्या गेलेल्या स्वकर्तृत्ववान पुरुषाला आपल्या लेखणीतून न्याय देणारा ‛कर्तुत्ववान लेखक’ ही उपाधी ‛शरद तांदळेंना’ शोभणारी आहे’ असं आज मला मनोमन वाटतं. ही कादंबरी माझ्या सारख्या पामराला भावली, ती इतरांच्याही मनालाही स्पर्शून जाईल आणि कायमच साहित्यात रावणाच्या इतिहासाची खरी साक्ष देत राहील, ती देत राहो हीच आशा करतो. आपण चोखाळलेली लेखणीची वाट ही इतिहासाच्या पानापानांत झोकाळुन गेलेल्या रावणासारख्या असंख्य कर्तृत्वान व्यक्तीरेखांना प्रकाशात आणणारी आहे.

महाराष्ट्राच्या संस्कृतीचं वैभवशाली मंदिर हे साहित्यारुपी एका खांबावर उभं आहे आणि त्याचं ओझं हे आपल्या सारख्या नव्या दमाच्या, उमद्या लेखकांनी आपल्या अंगा-खांद्यावरच पेललेलं आहे.

राजेंद्र भारूड यांचा जन्म साक्री तालुक्यातील सामोडे गावात एका भिल्ल-आदिवासी कुटुंबात झाला. राजेंद्र आईच्या गर्भातच असतांना त्याचे वडील मरण पावले. वडिलांचे प्रेम तर दूरच राहिले ज्याला आपल्या वडिलांचा चेहराही पाहण्याचे नशीब लाभले नाही अश्या दुर्भागी लेकरांपैकी एक राजेंद्र होता.

कृष्णाकाठ हे महाराष्ट्राचे पहिले मुख्यमंत्री श्री यशवंतराव चव्हाण यांचे आत्मचरित्र आहे. आजच्या महाराष्ट्राच्या विकासात यशवंतराव चव्हाण यांचा सिंहाचा वाटा आहे. कृष्णाकाठ हा त्यांच्या तीन खंडांत लिहिलेल्या आत्मचरित्राचा पहिला खंड. या खंडामध्ये त्यांचा मुख्यमंत्री होण्यापर्यंतचा प्रवास आलेला आहे.

यशवंतराव चव्हाण यांचा जन्म एका साधारण शेतकरी कुटुंबातला. त्यांना वडिलांचे सुख काही फार काळ मिळाले नाही. अगदी लहान वयात पित्याचे छत्र हरवल्याने त्यांचा सांभाळ त्यांच्या आईनेच केला.

असं म्हणतात कि समजूतदारपणा येण्यासाठी वय नव्हे तर परिस्थिती तशी लागते. यशवंतरावांच्या बाबतीतही तसेच घडले. अगदी कमी वयात त्यांना बरीच समज आली. एकट्या आईच्या भरवशावर आपले शिक्षण होणार नाही याची त्यांना जाणीव होती.

म्हणूनच त्यांनी लहानपणापासूनच मिळेल ते काम केले. शिक्षणाशिवाय तरणोपाय नाही याची जाणीव ठेवत त्यांनी वकिली पर्यंत शिक्षण पूर्ण केले. सोबतच स्वातंत्र्य लढ्यातही सहभाग घेतला. त्यासाठी त्यांना शिक्षाही झाली.

महाराष्ट्रातील एका शेतकऱ्याचा मुलगा महाराष्ट्राचा मुख्यमंत्री बनतो. शेतकऱ्यांना मदतीसाठी योजना आखतो. त्याच कर्तृत्व एवढ्यावरच संपत नाही तर तो देशाचा संरक्षण मंत्री, परराष्ट्र मंत्री आणि उप-पंतप्रधानही बनतो. त्याचा हा मंत्रमुग्ध करणारा प्रवास प्रत्येक मराठी माणसाला प्रेरणादायी आहे.

तराळ – अंतराळ

तराळ- अंतराळ हे शंकरराव खरात यांचं आत्मचरित्र आहे. शंकरराव खरात महाराष्ट्र विधिमंडळाचे सदस्य राहिले आहेत. सोबतच ते मराठवाडा विद्यापीठाचे उप-कुलगुरू या पदावरही कार्यरत होते.

बाबासाहेबांच्या विचारांचा वारसा जपत एका दलित कुटुंबात जन्मलेला व्यक्ती विद्येचे मंदिर समजल्या जाणाऱ्या विद्यापीठाचा उप-कुलगुरू बनतो. पण त्याचा काळ आहे १९२१-२००१. आज अजूनही खेडोपाडी बऱ्याच अंशी आपल्याला जातीभेद पाहायला मिळतो.

तर त्या काळाचा विचार करता उप-कुलगुरू बनेपर्यंतचा शंकरराव यांचा प्रवास किती खडतर असेल ? याची आपण कल्पना न केलेली बरी. त्यांच्या लिखाणाचा केंद्रबिंदू दलित आणि दलित जीवन हा आहे. विशेष म्हणजे मी हे एवढं दुःख भोगलं! माझ्यासोबत असा अन्याय झाला! या प्रकारचं रडगाणं यात नाही.

पुस्तकात आपल्याला तत्कालीन दलित जीवनातील विविध प्रसंग पाहायला मिळतात. जे पाहिलं, जे जगलो तेच लिहिलं या प्रकारातलं हे लिखाण आहे.

चरैवती -चरैवती

चरैवती-चरैवती हे राम नाईक यांचे आत्मचरित्र आहे. महाराष्ट्राच्या दुष्काळग्रस्त भागातील एका साधारण शिक्षकाच्या कुटुंबात राम नाईक यांचा जन्म झाला.शिक्षण पूर्ण झाल्याबरोबर त्यांना कुटुंबाला सहकार्य करण्यासाठी मुंबई गाठावी लागली. मुंबईत त्यांनी एक साधारण अशी नोकरी स्वीकारली.

मात्र त्यांच्या या नोकरीतील चाकोरीबद्ध जीवनाला एक दिवस कलाटणी मिळाली. त्यांना त्यांच्या संघटन कौशल्याची जाणीव झाली. आपल्या संघटन कौशल्याच्या जोरावर त्यांनी मुंबईच्या राजकारणात मोलाचे स्थान मिळवले. आणि अवाढव्य अश्या मुंबई शहराचे नेतृत्व केले.

त्यांनी सलग आठ निवडणूक जिंकल्या. एवढेच काय तर केंद्रीय मंत्रिपदापर्यंतही झेप घेतली. आपली मेहनत, संघटन आणि लोकांसाठी काहीतरी करण्याची तळमळ यांच्या जोरावर त्यांनी यश संपादन केले.प्रसंग कसाही असो तुम्ही फक्त चालत राहा. थांबू नका. हाच येथे त्यांचा मुख्य संदेश आहे.

प्रकाशवाटा हे डॉ. प्रकाश बाबा आमटे यांचे आत्मचरित्र आहे. डॉक्टर झाल्यानंतर त्यांना छानपैकी जीवन जगता आले असते. मात्र त्यांनी वडिलांच्या पाऊलावर पाऊल ठेवत समाजकार्यात उडी घेतली. हेमलकसाच्या आदिवासी भागात आदिवासींसाठी वैद्यकीय सुविधा निर्माण करण्याच्या त्यांच्या धडपडीची ही कथा आहे.

स्टीव्ह जॉब्स -एक झपाटलेला तंत्रज्ञ

आजची पिढी Apple चे वेगवेगळे प्रोडूक्टस आणि तंत्रज्ञानासाठी वेडी आहे. iPhone च्या नादात धुंद असणारे कित्येक आपल्या आजूबाजूला पाहत असतो. आज Apple या कंपनीचे कुठलेही प्रॉडक्ट वापरने हे एक प्रतिष्ठेचे लक्षण बनले आहे.

मंडळी या Apple नावाच्या ब्रॅण्डच्या मागे खूप मोठी गाथा लपली आहे. ही कथा आहे अविरत परिश्रमाची, जिद्दीची आणि स्वतःच्या मनावरील विश्वासाची. ही कथा आहे एक वेळी चांगले खायला मिळावे या उद्देशाने मैलो-मैल पायी घुमणारा ते जगातल्या सर्वात श्रीमंत व्यक्तीमध्ये जाऊन बसणाऱ्या एका महत्वाकांक्षी युवकाची.

सदर पुस्तक हे अच्युत गोडबोले आणि अतुल कहाते यांनी एकत्रितपणे लिहिले आहे. उद्योग असो की जीवनातील कुठलेही क्षेत्र, आपण निर्णय मात्र आपलं मन म्हणेल तोच घ्यायचा. शेवटी कुठं ना कुठं सगळं एकमेकांशी जुळून येत . आपण मात्र आपल्या मनाच्या निर्णयावर ठाम राहायचं. हे आपल्याला या पुस्तकातून शिकायला मिळेल.

गरुडझेप हे भारतीय प्रशासकीय सेवेतील अधिकारी श्री. भरत आंधळे यांचे आत्मचरित्र आहे. ग्रामीण भागातील एक साधारण मुलगा. अभ्यासातही अगदी साधारण असणारा. फार मोठी मोठी स्वप्न पाहतो. त्यासाठी प्रयत्नही करतो. जीव झोकून मेहनत करूनही त्याला यश मात्र मिळत नाही.

स्पर्धा परीक्षेचं जग म्हणजे जवघेणी स्पर्धा आहे. इथे यशाचा जर रेट काढायला गेलं तर तो १० टक्के पण भरणार नाही. या विश्वात टिकायचं तर अपयश पाचवं शिकावं लागत. एके ठिकाणी भरतनेच म्हटल्याप्रमाणे अपयशाचा पूर्ण जिनाच चढवा लागतो.

मग असे अपयश येत असतांना त्यांना समोर कसे जायचे? अपयशाला समोर जावे म्हणून सारेच शिकवतात. मात्र कसे समोर जायचे हे कुणीच सांगत नाही. ते आपल्याला अनुभवातूनच शिकावं लागत. मग हा अनुभव स्वतः घ्या किंवा दुसऱ्याच्या अनुभवातून शिका. सगळं सारखंच आहे.

आपल्या सर्वांचे आवडते लेखन साने गुरुजी यांनी 'श्यामची आई' हे पुस्तक लिहिले आहे. श्याम लहान असतानाच श्याम ची आई वारते. आई वारल्यानंतर आईच्या स्मृती रात्रीच्या वेळी श्याम आपल्या सवंगड्यांना सांगतानाचं वर्णन म्हणजे हे पुस्तक !! आईची प्रत्येक स्मृती ही खूप सुंदर रित्या पुस्तकात मांडण्यात आली असून, पुस्तक वाचता वाचता 'अरे !! मी पण बालपणी असाच होतो', असं म्हणत तुम्ही हसाल, अनेक ठिकाणी रडाल ही, पण हेच ते पुस्तक आहे जे आपल्याला जाणीव करून देईल की आई-वडिलांनी आपल्यावर केलेल्या संस्कारांच ऋण फेडायला आपल्याला सात जन्म ही कमी पडतील !! जेव्हा तुम्ही हे पुस्तक वाचाल, तेव्हा तुम्हाला तुमची आईची मुर्ती नजरेसमोर उभारल्याशिवाय राहणार नाही. श्यामच्या गोष्टी वाचताना, तुम्ही पुन्हा - पुन्हा बालपणात जाल. तुमच्या बालपणीच्या स्मृती जाग्या होतील व त्या तुमच्या डोळ्यासमोर एखाद्या फुलाप्रमाणे डोलतील एवढं मात्र नक्की..!!

Book review: A road trip from New York to Alaska opens a reluctant traveler to beauty and healing

“Out of the Dark”

By Marian Elliott; Cirque Press, 2024; 303 pages; $15.

A woman suffers the loss of her 19-year-old son and falls into a near-paralyzing depression. Her husband leaves their home in Long Island, New York, and moves to Florida, forbidding her to accompany him. He insists that she wants to visit relatives teaching in Toksook Bay, Alaska, and buys a camper for the trip. Accompanied by her son’s elderly shepherd-collie mix, she sets out on a road trip, unsure of where or how far she might go and really wanting only to join her husband in Florida.

This is the disquieting start to a story labeled memoir, told by Wasilla resident Marian Elliott. Memoirs generally employ an “I” to tell a true story, but “Out of the Dark” features a main character named Jeanne, an apparent stand-in for the author. (To avoid confusion, the book might have been called an autobiographical novel, based on the writer’s life but with the freedom to change identities and employ details and conversations to meet the story’s demands. There are other distinctions between memoirs and fiction, but the author must have had her reasons for choosing a third-person perspective.)

In any case, Elliott has told a compelling story with several angles. The first third of the book centers on the tragedy of losing a child to a senseless accident, the family’s inability to talk of the young man or his death, and the failing marriage. (As Jeanne learns when she finally attends a grief support group, a majority of marriages falter after such a tragedy.) Jeanne suffers emotional and mental anguish, worsened by her husband blaming her, without reason, for the death and otherwise undermining her sense of reality. He proves to be a champion of gaslighting and manipulation: “Do you have any idea how lucky you are? I know people who would give anything to go to Alaska. I wish I were going.”

Much of the remaining book is essentially a road trip, as Jeanne and the dog Gulliver, to whom she is devoted, travel together. Beginning in September, they first tour through a region she actually wants to visit — Canada’s Maritime Provinces. She seeks out ocean views and other restorative places. A single woman with an old dog draws attention, and she readily makes friends with other campers, residents, and a philosophical hitchhiker who asks, “Did you ever wonder if you met yourself on the road in a strange place, you’d recognize who you were?” The year was 1980, and her own trust and kindness seemed to invite that of others. She runs into the same travelers repeatedly, accepts invitations to visit others in their homes, and maintains correspondences for months and perhaps years afterward. When she mentions Alaska, some she meets are excited by the idea but most raise their eyebrows, especially about heading north so late in the season. Toksook Bay? She doesn’t seem to know, herself, that the Yup’ik village is not just “Alaska” but on an island far to the west, facing the Bering Sea.

Halfway through the book, three weeks after leaving her home, she’s firmly against continuing to Alaska. “She needed to make Gary (her husband) understand the Alaska trip was not going to happen.” But after a stop at her daughter’s college near Buffalo, N.Y., her husband on a phone call demands that she continue to Alaska and she agrees to drive as far as the Canadian Rockies.

Time on the road and in the narrative speeds up considerably after that. Jeanne learns that her husband has another woman in Florida — something readers might have deduced much earlier. “The only choice she could see was to go forward. Why not keep driving until she figured things out? Who knew what the road had to offer?” She drives up the Alaska Highway, where she runs out of gas and is rescued by kind men. She drives through whiteout snowstorms. In Whitehorse the dog has a medical emergency, other kind people help her, and she rushes on to Fairbanks to reach a veterinarian.

To tell much more of the story would give too much away, but suffice it to say that the old dog’s condition keeps Jeanne in Alaska until spring. She does actually get to Toksook Bay, surprised by the small plane, the numerous stops in and around Bethel, and her relatives’ request to bring a box of fruits and vegetables.

Throughout her travels, even as she continues to grieve for her son, Jeanne finds much to love about the world, in people and in nature. When a raven flies over her head in the quiet of British Columbia, the woman from New York is stunned to hear, for the first time in her life, the sound of a bird’s wings. Later, she’s entranced by the song and sight of a dipper (water ouzel), “flying just above the surface of the water following the curve of the creek. He settled on a boulder downstream and with the burbling waters rushing around him, he sang out again an ebullient medley in whistles and trills.”

In the end, “Out of the Dark” is a story of trust, self-knowledge, and healing. The journey with Jeanne/Elliott satisfies not only as a road trip marked by the kindnesses of strangers; readers will delight in the company of a woman traveler who grows into the self she’s in fact happy to recognize.

Paraffin nose jobs. Blinding mascara. “Bicycle face” (think the “Ozempic face” of 1910). As chronicled in Virginia Nicholson‘s “All the Rage: Stories From the Frontline of Beauty,” there’s not much women haven’t done to conform with the aesthetic standards of their day.

Nicholson, the author of six previous books on subjects ranging from Bloomsbury bohemia to 1950s femininity , introduces each chapter of her rollicking history — which focuses on the century between 1860 and 1960 — with a photograph of a woman whose looks epitomize the ideal of her age. Figure-eight corsets and protuberant bustles give way to short skirts and fringe; bobs cede to lacquered beehives. But as much as fashion, hairstyles and body ideals change over time, some things are forever: You’ll be judged for looking like you try, you’ll be judged if you look like you don’t try and you’re never allowed to get old.

Nicholson talked with The New York Times from her native England about bikini pinups, female empowerment and botched 1920s plastic surgeries. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Why did you choose to focus on these particular years?

I wanted to begin in 1860 because it’s the height of the Victorian era. The corset is shaping the body in an extraordinary, outrageous way, but we don’t know what’s underneath. It’s also the moment when photography goes mainstream. Daguerreotypes are no longer for the rich.

And by 1960, we’ve achieved a high point of visual media. Essentially, we’re still looking at each other in two dimensions, in color, just as we were then.

In 1960, fashion also gets the nearest we ever have to being naked. As you take off those horribly uncomfortable corsets and run around liberated in a bikini, you may think: Thumbs up to liberation. But of course, the more clothes you take off, the more you have to worry about what your body looks like.

So far, most western literature has paid far more attention to the fraught issues between fathers and sons — think anything by Thomas Wolfe, Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons or The Brothers Karamazov — than to the mysteries, ambiguities, and complexities of the mother-daughter bond. Feminist writers, understandably, critique this one-sided approach and demand more attention for women’s lives.

In 2000, Betsy Warland, renowned author, literary mentor, and feminist icon, published her groundbreaking lyric memoir, Bloodroot. More than two decades later, Warland and Inanna Publications have reissued the book, augmented with a foreword by Susan Olding and a retrospective essay by Warland about what writing and rereading Bloodroot taught her about the nature of narrative and about her own life.

Bloodroot is many things — a memoir of the last stages in the life of the author’s mother, a reflection on the shared but unspoken experience of abuse both women suffered, and a profound meditation on the nature of narrative and language itself. It is a masterpiece of lapidary text, a blend of prose, poetry, and open space. The words live on the page like the brush strokes of Chinese calligraphy or the shapes on canvas of the best abstract painting. The artful arrangement of text and open space creates a visual power of its own and demands that the reader slow down and absorb both what is said and what is omitted.

On the pages of this remarkable book, we are witness to a profound drama in the lives of the author and her mother as the mom moves through the shadows of dementia toward her end. Warland is both tender and unsparing in her portrayal of the dynamics of her family, the quotidian and complicated secrecies and revelations that made the shared journey toward the end of her mother’s life an oddly thrilling adventure and a work of literary craft. The work is formally innovative and embodies an implausible braid of playfulness and fundamental seriousness. This is a text to treasure and savour, read and reread. It rewards the attentive and patient reader with layer after layer of meaning and beauty.

At a time when more and more people are facing the challenges of caring for their aging parents and trying to make sense out of lives lived and opportunities missed amid the often messy realities of old age, this is a book that is sure to resonate.

🏹The book is translated into English by Vikrant Pande who had already translated many famous Marathi books, so I won't comment on that. But the book is filled with lots of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes that are hard to ignore and disturbed my reading experience. 🏹The book failed to capture the true soul of Karna's character.

I found it really quite hard to review this extraordinary, wonderful and important book. I've reviewed it for Shiny New Books, too, and that's how I originally came upon a copy - it does what a few books on land ownership have touched upon and looks carefully and in dept at the effect of colonialism and empire - not just slavery but a lot about slavery - on the British countryside.
