THE HADASSAH MEDICAL ORGANIZATION

Building a better world through medicine.

From the very beginning, Hadassah’s pacesetting progress has set the standard for excellence in medicine in Israel. An impressive list of trailblazing achievements is testimony to Hadassah’s vision and mission. Today, the Hadassah Medical Center continues to march forward, making the world a better place through healing, teaching, and research.

Transcending politics, religion, and geographical boundaries to enhance world health, the Hadassah Medical Center was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Hadassah Medical Organization (also known as HMO) is comprised of the two  Hadassah Hospitals  (Ein Karem and Mount Scopus).

Hadassah Hospitals in Israel

Since the establishment of Hadassah’s first hospital on Jerusalem’s Street of the Prophets in 1918, the Hadassah University Medical Center has expanded to include two University hospitals in Jerusalem – located on Mt. Scopus and in Ein Karem. Its two hospitals serve annually over 1,000,000 patients, having over 1,300 beds, 45 operating theaters, nine specially oriented intensive care units, and five schools of allied medical professions, owned and operated in collaboration with the Hebrew University.

With its 45,000 operations/procedures annually, its Nobel Peace Price nomination, its 12 Israel Prize wins, the over 2,000 scientific publications in the past 5 years, the 40-50% of bio-medical research done in Israel at Hadassah, over 200 patents, 150 clinical trials, and 15 start-ups, Hadassah can be considered one of a kind !

Hadassah’s extensive network of satellite services provides community health care programs, specialized outpatient clinics and services in several city neighborhoods and nearby towns, as well as consultation clinics in the center of Jerusalem and in Tel Aviv.

Davidson Tower

The 19-story Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower on the Ein Kerem campus is a tangible example of Hadassah’s commitment to the people it serves. This new in-patient facility is designed to address today’s needs, tomorrow’s breakthroughs, and evolution in patient care for years to come.

The Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower completes the modern campus of Hadassah Ein Kerem and is a fitting addition to the Cancer Center’s Sharett Institute of Oncology, the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Mother and Child Center and the Judy and Sidney Swartz Center for Emergency Medicine.

The Rehabilitation Center

Jerusalem is one of the fastest growing and diverse cities in the country. In light of this reality, it is a permanent challenge to grow resources to meet the burgeoning need for rehabilitation.

At the time the original rehabilitation center was built half a century ago, Jerusalem’s population was less than one third its current size. Today, with over 1.2 million inhabitants, it represents one of the fastest growing populations in the country.

Due, in large part to its demographic composition, the nation’s capital is not among the richer cities in the country, and access to resources is far more challenging. The average household income in Jerusalem falls under 50% of corresponding household income in Tel Aviv

Today, we are realizing a vision of a new and comprehensive Rehabilitation Center at Mount Scopus. To meet the growing demand for top quality rehabilitative services for decades to come, the new Center will be three times its current size, encompassing approximately 19,500 square meters. The new Center will be a friendly and supportive environment with direct access to a host of multidisciplinary treatments available at the hospital and often necessary during the rehabilitation process. The new Center will be spacious and warm to encourage movement, independence, and a healthy state of mind.

“Our ability to walk, use our hands and move our bodies can often be taken for granted, … until we lose it. The New Rehabilitation Center at Mount Scopus will help people regain hope and their physical capabilities… restoring their independence and dignity.” – Dr. Tamar Elram, Director Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus.

$6.5m. out of the $8m. building project are a generous donation from the Wohl Legacy in the UK.

Among the scientists, researchers and dignitaries attending today’s (Thursday, October 24) inauguration ceremony of the Wohl Institute for Translational Medicine at Hadassah Ein Kerem were Hadassah Medical Organization Director-General Zeev Rotstein; Wohl Foundation’s Trustees: Prof. David Latchman, Sir Ian Gainsford, Mrs. Ella Latchman, Mr. Martin Paisner and Mr. Daniel Dover;  Hadassah Research Fund Director-General Eyal Mishani; Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dina Ben-Yehuda; Mark Addleman, Chief Executive of Hadassah UK as well as heads of universities, representatives of the National Science Foundation, the Jerusalem Development Authority, the British Embassy in Israel.

This new multidisciplinary institute is the result of partnership among the Wohl Legacy, Hadassah International UK, and the Hadassah Medical Organization.

The Wohl Institute for Translational Medical Research will serve as an infrastructure hub for studying models of human diseases such as cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, metabolic diseases.

The Wohl Center offers state-of-the-art technologies enabling visualization, digitization, and image analysis spanning from molecular resolution up to in-vivo imaging in order to elucidate the underlying diseases mechanisms and further the development of tailored drugs.

The Institute will provide imaging services using some of the world’s most advanced imaging devices. These include:

  • Ultrasound combined with a photo-acoustic unit for non-invasive monitoring of changes in blood flow, cardiac problems and changes in oxygen levels in the tissue.
  • An integrated PET/CT device to test anatomical changes (particularly in bones and internal organs) together with metabolic and molecular changes.
  • An Integrated MRI/PET device, which includes a 7-tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner with PET insert– the first of its kind in the country to enable high exactitude monitoring of anatomical changes while acquiring PET images demonstrating cancer, metabolic and molecular changes.
  • Optical Imaging: Two fluorescence and luminescence IVIS devices that enable high-sensitivity and accurate tracking of cells/molecules.
  • Micro CT that enables imaging of bone changes in non-invasive, single micron precision.

According to Prof. Rinat Abramovitch, Director of the Wohl Institute for Translational Medical Research, alongside the imaging devices, the institute will include biological and chemical laboratories and image analysis rooms that will allow all studies to be conducted under one roof.

Prof. Abramovitch added that Hadassah currently operates two cyclotron facilities (particle accelerators) that allow synthesis of unique and short-lived materials for use in PET. Additional services that are available on the Ein Kerem campus, includes experimental surgery, behavioral laboratories, drug development and pathological services.

LIFECHANGING

Hadassah’s extraordinary impact in 2023.

From groundbreaking medical achievements to advocating for women’s rights, fighting antisemitism to helping Israel heal after the devastation of Hamas’ terror, 2023 was a lifechanging year for each of us — and Hadassah. Join us as we look back at how Hadassah changed lives, offered hope and helped a nation and a people heal.

hadassah medical research

For the past four years, it has been my honor to serve as Hadassah’s national president. Nothing in my tenure as a Jewish leader has been as lifechanging as October 7, and never has our work seemed more relevant and urgently needed than in its aftermath. Since our founding, Hadassah has met crises with meaningful action. Just months after I started my presidency, the COVID-19 pandemic transformed our world, and a year later, Russia invaded Ukraine. For both, Hadassah — with the help of supporters like you — was able to lead the way. But it's this last year that has been the most challenging by far. Being in Israel on October 7, holding the hands of patients critically wounded from Hamas’ terrorist attack, witnessing the incredible, selfless response of staff at Hadassah hospitals, is something that will stay with me forever. Providing hope and healing is something Hadassah does at all times, not only during war. Together with our tireless volunteers and staff, members and donors, we’ve continued to accomplish so much: helping the Hadassah Medical Organization bring cutting-edge healthcare to the people of Israel, advocating for women’s health, empowering women and standing strongly against antisemitism, while our members and supporters in hundreds of chapters around the country came together to advance Hadassah’s mission. This year alone has seen Hadassah hospitals at the forefront, developing personalized cancer treatments and employing the latest technological advances, like robotics and 3D printing, to aid in complicated surgeries. Across the US, we reaffirmed our unwavering support for complete access to reproductive choice, fought for better protections against antisemitism at the state and federal levels, empowered younger women to take on leadership roles and participated in the largest pro-Israel rally in US history. Our ties to Israel are strong. We supported at-risk teens and young adults through our Youth Aliyah villages and an enduring connection to the Jewish people through Young Judaea. Our inaugural list of 18 American Zionist Women You Should Know showcased women who are doing important work building bridges, making an impact and shaping the future of Zionism. Our Inspire Zionism symposium featured powerful speakers hosting topical conversations about identity, perceptions of Israel, antisemitism and empowerment. For all of this, I couldn’t be prouder to have been named one of The Jerusalem Post’s “50 Most Influential Jews'' in 2023. The work we do together is truly lifechanging. The opportunity to lead an organization such as this will remain a highlight of my life, and I am reassured to know that I leave it in extremely capable hands. With pride, passion and purpose,

Rhoda Smolow Hadassah National President 2020-2023

hadassah medical research

More than 30 years ago, I became involved with Hadassah in my hometown of Cincinnati. It has been my privilege to serve in a number of leadership roles since then at the local, regional and national levels. I did this because, in addition to my love for Israel, I believe in empowering women. I believe that it is the duty and responsibility of our generation to serve as mentors for the next, to help nurture and grow the next leaders so that Hadassah’s first century will only be its opening chapter. Hadassah, in collaboration with the Hadassah Medical Organization and Hadassah International, accomplished so much in 2023 –– groundbreaking medicine, powerful advocacy, engaging with members across the country. Yet I know that I stepped into this role at a challenging time — for Israel, for Jews everywhere, for everyone. I am beyond thankful to my friend Rhoda Smolow for setting Hadassah on a path of hope and healing following the atrocities of October 7, one I will do all I can to build upon. I grew up in the Midwest, in a home filled with Zionism, where my parents taught us to have a good work ethic and a good neshama — a good soul. My father used to joke that though I was the youngest of three, he really had four children — me, my siblings and Israel. When I married my husband, Michael, he felt similarly, and we raised our three children with these same values. We taught them to stand up, to speak out, to volunteer. These are values I share with so many of you. I want to thank each of you for supporting the mission, the vision and the values of Hadassah. I look forward to the work we will do together, to help save lives, to save souls. Together, we are making a difference. For our own times, and the generations to come.

Breast Cancer Risk Doubles

What can i do, breast cancer research, breast cancer advocacy, on the ground.

What YOU Can Do

As scientists and doctors — including at HMO — deepen our understanding of breast cancer, we have more tools to fight it. Make sure you and your loved ones understand your risks and what breast changes women should be on the lookout for. Talk to your loved ones about breast cancer in your family, and talk to your doctor about when and if you should get a mammogram or genetic counseling. Then spread the word. When it comes to awareness and breast cancer advocacy , just talking to family, friends, and your community – in person, online, and everywhere -- can have an impact.

Across America, Hadassah chapters are engaging their communities in Hadassah's national breast cancer awareness programs . Some are teaching teens breast health self-awareness, while others are involving women in raising breast cancer visibility by decorating bras or painting their bodies, sharing personal stories of survival, or speaking with loved ones about family BRCA risks. In all of these ways, Hadassah women embody the Power of Women Who Heal.

Stories from Events

Hadassah women are always coming up with new ways to get together for a good cause. History of Kemerovo Oblast

People began to settle in what is now the Kemerovo region several thousand years ago. The indigenous peoples of the region were Shortsy and Teleuts. In 1618, Russians founded Kuznetsky stockaded town in the south of the present region to protect Russian lands from the raids of the Mongols and Jungars. In 1698, Mariinsk was founded.

In 1721, Mikhailo Volkov found “burning mountain” (a burning coal seam) on the banks of the Tom River and thus became the person who discovered the Kuzbass coal deposits. Industrial development of this land started at the end of the 18th century.

During the 19th century, the territory of the Kemerovo region was part of the Tomsk province. During this period, the first industrial enterprises appeared here: Tomsk ironworks, Gavrilovsky and Gurievsky silver plants, Suharinsky and Salairsky mines. Construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway was one of the main reasons for the rapid development of the local industry.

More historical facts…

In Soviet times, the region became part of the West Siberian krai, and then - Novosibirsk oblast. The development of the coal, metallurgical and chemical industries continued: Kemerovo Coke Plant, Kuznetsk Metallurgical Plant, a lot of new mines. The workers’ settlements built near the industrial enterprises quickly obtained the status of towns: Kiselyovsk, Osinniki, Krasnobrodsky, Tashtagol, Kaltan, Mezhdurechensk and others.

During the Second World War, this region was a major supplier of coal and metal. More than 50 thousand tanks and 45 thousand aircraft were produced using steel from Novokuznetsk. 71 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Kuzbass from the occupied regions, most of them remained in the region after the war.

In 1943, Kemerovo Oblast became a separate region that included 17.5% of the territory and 42% of the total population of Novosibirsk Oblast. After the war, the region continued to grow rapidly. On September 18, 1984, about 100 km from Kemerovo, a peaceful underground nuclear explosion was carried out, the power of the explosive device was 10 kilotons.

In the 1990s, the region’s economy declined. However, by the end of the 20th century, there were some positive developments - the development of the coal industry in the first place. Special attention was paid to the development of open-pit coal mining, as a more effective and safe way.

Kemerovo Oblast - Features

Kemerovo Oblast is one of the few Russian regions that has a recognized and well-known alternative name “Kuzbass” - the abbreviation of “Kuznetsk coal basin” occupying a large part of the territory of the region.

It is the most densely populated part of Siberia. The length of the region from north to south is about 500 km, from west to east - 300 km. Russians make up more than 90% of the population. There are small nations of Shortsy, Teleuts, Siberian Tatars who have preserved their cultural traditions.

The climate is sharply continental with long cold winters and warm short summers. The average temperature in January is minus 17-20 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 17-18 degrees Celsius.

Today, about 86% of the population of Kemerovo Oblast lives in cities and towns making it one of the most urbanized regions of Russia. The largest cities are Kemerovo (548,000), Novokuznetsk (540,000), Prokopievsk (185,000), Mezhdurechensk (95,400), Leninsk-Kuznetsky (91,600), Kisilyovsk (83,700), Yurga (79,700), Belovo (70,100), Anzhero-Sudzhensk (65,700).

Sheregesh, a village located at the foot of Zelenaya Mountain in Tashtagol district, is one of Russia’s most popular ski resorts. The ski season lasts from November to May. Kuznetsky Alatau Reserve and Shorsky National Park are the main natural attractions.

Kemerovo Oblast plays a significant role in Russian industry. The following mineral resources are mined here: coal, gold, silver, iron ore, manganese ore, aluminum, nepheline ore, lead, zinc, barite, quartz, limestone, clay, dolomite, sand.

Kuznetsk coal basin is one of the largest coal basins in the world. The most important centers of the local coal industry are Prokopyevsk, Mezhdurechensk, Belovo, Kemerovo, Novokuznetsk, Osinniki, Leninsk-Kuznetsky. Coal mines can be found almost everywhere in the Kemerovo region. About 180 million tons of coal is mined annually.

Rail transport is well developed in the region. The Trans-Siberian Railway, the South Kuzbas branch of West Siberian Railway cross its territory. There are large airports in Kemerovo (Kemerovo International Airport) and Novokuznetsk (Spichenkovo Airport).
