Nagaram Review

'Nagaram', starring Sundeep Kishan, Shri, Regina and others, hits the screens on March 10.  Here is our review.

The story of 'Nagaram' essentially revolves around four characters, played by Sundeep Kishan, Shri, Munishkanth and Charlie.

Shri is a no-nonsense youngster from a small town, who recently relocated to Chennai (for unstated reasons, the city is referred to as Madras throughout the movie) for an IT job.

Sundeep Kishan, a brave and brawny young man with a bleeding heart (otherwise, he is deemed irresponsible and stupidly aggressive by the people in his life), knows only one job: to admire and woo Regina Cassandra, a HR personnel in the IT company where Shri wants to land a job.

The other equally important characters are a migrant taxi driver (played by Charlie), who has come to the city for the treatment of his ailing son, and who believes that the society is only as good as we are to it.

Somewhere, a group of three goondas field a bumbling Munishkanth to kidnap a child, but the latter ends up kidnapping the son of a dreaded don (played by Madhusudhanan).

This wrong kidnap by Munishkanth, Sundeep's decision to teach an acid-attacker a lesson, Shri's sheer bad luck in the new place and Charlie's tryst with the don - all trigger a chain of intriguing events.

Analysis:

Writer-director Lokesh does not make a fuss about introducing the characters as this or that.  We are treated to multiple incidents happening to different people in different situations around the same time, and how they coincidentally intersect with each other is what is the crux of the hyperlink screenplay pattern that this film follows.

The scriptwriter and the Editor (Philomin Raj) have worked in tandem to ensure that the narration is smooth.  Sharp dialogues (Lokesh's original ones have been translated by Sashank Vennelakanti) come as a plus.  Raw visuals (Selvakumar SK is the cinematographer) are stylized subtly.  The night effect scenes are especially brilliant.

The story is heavily dependent on coincidences and that makes things too cerebral after a point.  But within that framework,  'Nagaram' manages to sustain the audience's interest. The acid-attack incident being an example.

The film manages to balance the superficial and the emotional quite well.  Charlie's characterization stands out.  The whole episode of his travel with Shri is a must-watch element.

You may say that the goriness, although justified from the perspective of the story, could have been downplayed to make it more palatable for family audiences.

Probably, the makers should have projected it as it is, instead of misleading the audience into presuming that it's a Sundeep Kishan-Regina movie all the way.

Shri comes up with a brilliant performance as he conveys the shock, desperation and dejection without going overboard anywhere. Sundeep Kishan as a rugged youngster is quite apt in the action scenes.  His look and measured portrayal deserves kudos.  Charlie is once again brilliant after 'Yaman'.  One wants to watch him more and more.  However, Munishkanth is a bit over-the-top.  If his characterization is to-the-point, his act leaves much to be desired.

Regina Cassandra gets a little limited screen space,  but still manages to perform in a way that justifies casting her in the role.  The actors who portray the corrupt inspector and the constable and the guy who comes as the friend of Sri do their parts well.

Javed Riaz’s songs are nice to the ears, seamlessly interlaced as they are with the screenplay.  The BGM, apart from enhancing the thrill factor,  announces the arrival of a promising youngster who is well-equipped in playing with sounds.  Stunt choreography by Anbariv is realistic and impactful.

'Nagaram' is a thriller where four different personality types find their lives converging over a kidnap.  Excellent performances (generally speaking) and first-rate technical elements are its major assets.  On the flip side, even at 137 minutes, it looks stretched and somewhat puzzlingly cerebral.

Rating: 3.25 / 5.0

nagaram movie review in telugu

Film: Nagaram (dubbed) Cast: Sundeep Kishan, Regina Cassandra, Sri, Charlee, Ramdoss Dialogues: Shashank Vennelakanti Music: Javed Riaz Cinematography: Selvakumar SK Edited by: Philomin Written and directed by : Lokesh Kanagaraj Release date: 10th March, 2017

'Nagaram', a human drama at its core, tells at least four stories that coalesce into one finale. It's a screenplay-based thriller.

Sundeep Kishan is unemployed and the only job he knows is to fall after Regina Cassandra. Like those typical filmi heroes, he thinks he is unemployed by choice. He looks raw and unsophisticated in total contrast to Regina, a soft-spoken hi-tech professional in an IT company.

Sri, a new migrant to the city (the film is set in Chennai), finds the metropolis quite unsettling. He sees it as an unfriendly place where the gullible are taken for a ride. Certain goondas mistake him for Sundeep and beat him up, taking away his academic certificates. From this point onwards, Sri's life becomes harder and harder and Sundeep, without his involvement, is causing him the hardships! As Sundeep's fate would have it, Sri is in Regina's good books. Adding a rich texture to these tracks are those of a positive-minded taxi driver (Charlie is simply brilliant) and an amateurish kidnapper (played by comedian Munishkanth), both of whom draw Sri and Sundeep into their lives through their respective acts.

The crux lies in how these four people go through a challenging sequence of events and emerge victorious at a moral level. All of his happens in the backdrop of the mistaken kidnap of a school-going kid, who is the son of a ruthless don (Madhusudanan as PKP) shaking Chennai.

The biggest strength of 'Nagaram' is the screenplay technique. The hyperlink narrative style is not only a technique, but also a tactic. It can conceal the ordinariness of events by keeping the audience guessing about how the different tracks will meet at a junction. Before you realize that it's a routine track, the film abruptly shifts to one of the other tracks.  Something of this sort keeps happening on and on in 'Nagaram'. But it's the highs that keep it gripping. Once Munishkanth's character is introduced (in the very first scene, it becomes clear that he is a dumbo who will ill-execute the kidnap plot), the film takes off quite well.

All the four key characters belong to the middle-class, and all the four have a certain innocent charm about them.  That said, the film has certain Kollywoodish trappings about it. Sri's character sketch is a case in point. Even as you think he is a timid guy, he becomes so fierce as to be capable of beating up professional rowdies in style. Even in such cinematic moments, however, human emotions keep the proceedings touching. Charlie may be a poor father who has to earn money so that he can treat his ailing son, but even in such dire straits, he nurtures no ill will against the tyranny of the metropolis. The way he bats for Madras, saying that millions of migrants find their livelihood in such cities, the way he changes the thinking of the unlucky Sri, is terrific.

As much as Sundeep has done a commendable job, it's to note that his role is not larger. Perhaps, a couple of scenes involving Munishkanth should have been chopped off to make space for Sundeep. His hairdo and aggressive body language, the way he woos Regina without coming across as an arrogant stalker (like those Tamil heroes), is interesting. Regina Cassandra does not have much role in the film.

Munishkanth's comic style totally lacks nativity. It's difficult to watch him in so many scenes for the reason that his reactions seem over the board. Charlie has this uncle-next-door vibes about him. The scene where his wife asks him why he hasn't painted his son's name on the taxi's back window is so realistic. Towards the climax, this element makes a re-appearance in a crime scene.

While 'Nagaram' looks convincing in parts, you are likely to feel that the whole is not as thrilling. There are moral problems also. Is a corrupt cop more immoral and cruel than a don who mercilessly tortures and kills scores of people? How fair is it to put innocents in trouble in avenging an acid-attacker? Selvakumar's cinematography is quite adept. The frames are soothing, helped also by Philomin Raj's editing. Javed Riaz’s BGM may be somewhat inspired, but it is quite a feast. The dialogues lack Telugu nativity.

Bottomline:  'Nagaram' comes with hyperlink screenplay. The thriller element is decently sustained. It's tightly narrated. The performances (especially by Sundeep Kishan) are mostly natural. Despite slow proceedings and lack of nativity, it is decent crime thriller for sure.

Nagaram Review

Nagaram Review

Nagaram Review, What’s Behind: Success has been eluding Sundeep Kishan from long. His dubbed film Nagaram (in Tamil Maanagaram) has hit the screens today as a crime thriller in Lokesh Kanagaraj direction starring Regina as heroine. Let us see, what happened in the city?

Nagaram Story: In what is said to be a hyperlink cinema, four stories run in parallel to connect with one common element. Sundeep Kishan, a jobless straight forward going guy loves Regina, a software employee. Shri is in Hyderabad to find a job and his certificated are stolen. Third is the kidnap gang of Ramdoss who lift local goon PKP’s daughter. Fourth is that of a cab driver Charle. How these four plots are interlaced together towards climax is a thrilling ride.

Nagaram Artists and Technicians: Weaving multiple stories into one and developing links between each of these stories is a challenge at screenplay. Debutant Lokesh Kanagaraj’s complexity at work is also sensed on screen when various characters and day to day identifiable episodes roll one after the other. Nevertheless, keeping narrative racy without imparting boredom at any point of time is the directorial excellence in Lokesh which surely has to be appreciated. Such kind of layer by layer plot arrangements without turbulence is rare of its kind in Indian cinema. Selva Kumar’s camera work created an authentic and realistic mood. Philomin’s editing though could have a little more crisp yet left no ground. Javed Riaz’s background music haunts us even after exiting the theater. Production standards from Potential Studios of SR Prabhu are worth to appreciate.

About performances, Sundeep Kishan sinks into the role definitely different from his past films. We easily identify an aggressive friend in our friend circle with Sundeep. Heroine Regina though hasn’t got much than connecting two stories yet her presence is pleasing. Shri got lot of variations and connects well. Sympathizing with Charlie is so easy because of pity face. Madhu as PKP is fine. Munishkanth and other artists just lived into the respective roles.

Nagaram Advantages:

- Screenplay

- Direction

- Thrilling Narration

Nagaram Drawbacks:

- Overstretched Scenes

- Complexity

- Missing Nativity

- Too Many Characters

Nagaram Rating Analysis: Yet again, one more classic example on how new age film makers are coming up with dissimilar stories, refreshing screenplay and distinctive directional skills. Every turn the film takes is unpredictable keeping audience hooked to screen. Lokesh and his technical team seem to have done honest, strong ground work before getting the on screen output.

From the very beginning of first scene, director took no time establishing the key characters and four plots. All the artists get in tandem with their respective plots involving the audience into story telling process. May it be Shri wrong-identity and stealing the certificates or Sundeep Kishan-Regina track or Charlie getting his cab on duty or the line of PKP and his daughter’s kidnap from school, everything is told in a new style. Interval block is deftly handled.

Into second half, though entire plot looks open, director accepts challenge and goes beyond our simple assumptions. The advantage he took in driving the four tracks to coherence touches the brutality in city. Especially, Charlie beaten to death by kidnappers or PKP learning a lesson of life or Sundeep’s heroism or Inspector’s double game, there’s a new spark in screenplay.

All in all, Nagaram is a different treat for those who love to watch thrillers. Debutant Lokesh is really talented as his mark is profusely felt in every department. CJ goes for 2.75 stars and is worth watching. Box Office verdict is hard to forecast because response from metros makes all the change.

Nagaram: Life in a metropolis

‘nagaram’ presents stories of survival in a big, bad city.

Updated - March 09, 2017 05:02 pm IST

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo

Sri, Regina and Sundeep

In a metropolitan city bursting at its seams, a sea of frenzied people are in a constant hurry to reach some place, carve their own little identity and play out their roles at work and home. There’s rarely the time, or intention, to pause for someone in need. Someone could have been beaten up at night and cast aside on the road, like the character played by Sri, in this film. At day break, a tea stall nearby is bustling but no one helps this stranger lying on the road.

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj explores the lives of four characters whose paths criss cross. Sri plays a guy who comes to the city to eke out a living, and some respect. He tells the HR (Regina Cassandra) of an IT firm that his village will respect him if he earns ₹25000 here than toiling in a rustic space. Sundeep Kishan plays a guy who’s rather aimless, apart from wanting to win the girl he loves. Then, there’s a wannabe gangster who lands himself and his gang in a deep mess. Elbowing his way into the city is a cab driver, played by Charle. There’s a morbidly funny segment about the fate of drivers who fail to repay their debt to a cab company run by a notorious gangster.

The journey of these interesting, oddball characters brings to the fore several facets of a big city. All four have their own challenges, two of them already a part of the city and habituated to its indifferent ways and two others, Sri and Charle, new entrants hoping they can pull it off in the urban jungle. Sri is fantastic as the youngster whose survival instincts kick in when he’s roughed up. Unlike his friend, he cannot tolerate cuss words being casually thrown around during traffic snarls. When he’s cornered, instead of being tactful, he chooses to be upfront even if means facing some more blows. A mature, meek Charle is a contrast. Thrown together in an unexpected situation, they swim against the tide.

Towards the fag end of the film, the pivotal characters realise they don’t know each other’s names. We don’t either. And it’s immaterial. These nameless characters are an intrinsic part of the city’s fabric.

The weakest story is that of the gangsters. In recent years, Tamil cinema has delivered some thoroughly entertaining, pulpy gangster flicks. In Nagaram , though, the portrayal of gangsters seems laboured and a tad boring. Ramdoss as a fumbling new gangster makes an impression.

Restrained and assured performances come in from Sundeep and Regina, who don’t get to play the typical hero, heroine. This story doesn’t warrant songs and the team doesn’t dilute the proceedings. A few lines play in the background occasionally, blending with the narrative.

The film gets its grimy, gritty atmosphere from Selvakumar’s camera, further accentuated by Javed Riaz’s wonderful background score.

This dubbed version of Maanagaram (Tamil) isn’t phenomenal but is compelling for the large part.

Nagaram Telugu Movie Review

Rating: 3.5/5

March 9, 2017 at 10:50 am by HaribabuBolineni

‘Maanagaram’ is the latest Indian Tamil-language thriller film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by S R Prabhu under his Potential Studios whose previous movie was Maya. The same film was titled as ‘Nagaram’ in Telugu, and this Telugu version is also having a simultaneous release along with the film’s Tamil version. The film features Sundeep Kishan, Sri and Regina Cassandra in the lead roles, while Charle and Ramdoss play a supporting role. Check out our review of this movie here.

A still from Nagaram Telugu Movie

As the title itself suggests that the film is happening in a city and something is going on in it, the same has been conveyed from the beginning itself. The film Nagaram starts off with a youngster (Shri) who lands up in Hyderabad with a lot of dreams to take up a job in an IT firm. On the other side, we are introduced to a happy-go-lucky youngster (Sundeep Kishan), who was in love with (Regina Cassandra) and is always ready to go to any extremes to win his love. To the same city, a taxi driver arrives to give better medical treatment to his son. All of a sudden, a kidnap in the city changes their lives, and all of them gets connected to each other. What happened after that forms the rest of the story.

Cast and Performances:

Sundeep Kishan has got the best role in the film, and he has given the finest performance in the movie. He is bold and vigorous and impressed the audiences. With this film, he is sure to make some market for his films in Tamil film industry. Regina Cassandra is good in the film, but she does not have anything big in the movie. Munishkanth with all his wacky one-liners is a master stroke and entertains in the film. Shri has got a righteous role in the film, and he was good as per the limitations of his character.

Technical Department:

Sundeep and Regina in Nagaram

The film is very intense regarding the technical aspects. The cinematography of the film is perfect. The nightlife of the city has been shown very well by the cinematographer. The music is top level in the film. The BGM has elevated many key scenes in the movie. Philomin’s cuts have contributed for the film’s gripping narration, and he did his job pretty well. The production values of Potential Studios are rich.

Writing Department:

The film has some brilliant writing from Lokes. The screenplay is a major highlight of the film. The story-telling is crystal clear and simple. The dialogues are good. The detailing of every single aspect is beautiful.

  • Performances
  • Few Ups and Down

Verdict: The film Nagaram is different from the other routine films. There is a lot of good and interesting stuff that will appeal the audiences. The film Nagaram is surely going to bring some good name for Sundeep Kishan as an actor. Also, Sundeep Kishan was a perfect fit for the role he was offered in the film. The film has too many plus points and hence the few minus points will also be neglected. The gripping narration is what keeps us glued to the screens. The realistic approach to the film is another big plus point. The film falls flat at certain times but on a whole, the film is going to be impressive for sure. Nagaram has its moments which are at the right places and it is an engaging movie.

Maanagaram movie review: A gritty story and also the best film of Sundeep Kishan's career

Maanagaram is the kind of drama which, at its core, drives us to see the positive side of life even when all hope seems lost

Maanagaram movie review: A gritty story and also the best film of Sundeep Kishan's career

In the first few minutes of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Maanagaram , a young man, who comes to Chennai for the first time, gets beaten up by some goons in the middle of the night. It’s clearly a case of mistaken identity.

The next day, when the same guy’s friend urges him to travel by bus, he gets caught up in another fight which makes him question whether it’s even worth living in a city. Just like him, another middle-aged man, a cab driver, comes to the city to make a living and on the first day of his job, his life goes haywire.

There’s another gang, in the same city, whose plan to kidnap a young boy goes terribly wrong. Elsewhere, on the same day, another youngster is forced to leave the city at the behest of his uncle, who’s a police officer, because he’s accused of a crime. One fateful night, the lives of all these characters intertwine in more ways they can imagine and it all boils down to common theme - You never know who’s going to come to your rescue because, even with all the cynicism surrounding us, there’s always a good samaritan around the corner.

Directed by newcomer Lokesh Kanagaraj, Maanagaram is a gritty tale about people living on the edge and how they find hope in the most unlikely places.

At some level, Maanagaram feels like a social commentary on how a city and its people, despite being strangers, suck you into their world and make you one of their own. And Lokesh drives home this point with some smartly written dialogues and well-crafted sequences that connect the lives of different characters in a mysterious manner.

Maanagaram is the kind of drama which, at its core, drives us to see the positive side of life even when all hope seems lost, although there are instances where it feels too contrived. You either accept it as a stroke of genius or a deliberate attempt to drive home the point that we are all connected to each other in some way or another. Think about it - What are the odds of six characters bumping in to each other on the same day in a metropolis like Chennai?

Soon, a pattern emerges. You begin to realise that one of the characters could encounter another character just in the nick of time before something untoward happens. There is a sense of danger to begin with, but Lokesh ensures that each subplot is soaked with a lot of hope and a positive twist in the end.

This brings us back to the primary question - Does it feel a tad too contrived? Yes, but at the same time, it also makes us empathise with all the characters. That, for the lack of the better word, is the real achievement by Lokesh and rest of the actors.

Actor Shri delivers a splendid performance as an youngster who’s new to the city. His desperation, and anxiety anchors the plot right in the beginning and the actor brings plenty of intensity to the film. Then, there’s Sundeep Kishan who, finally, gets a chance to live a character and do it with finesse. The way the actor delves deep into the psyche of a hot-headed youth and brings authenticity to it is quite palpable.

Maanagaram is easily one of the best films in Sundeep Kishan’s career and it makes you wonder what had happened to him after a solid debut in Prasthanam several years ago. Another actor who makes you empathise a lot with his fate is Charle who plays a cab driver. Regina and Ramdoss too nail their performances.

While the film’s narrative and top-notch performances by the ensemble cast are wonderful, what’s even more remarkable are Selvakumar’s cinematography and a stunning sound design throughout the film.

The events in the film move at a break neck speed and credit goes to the whole team for putting it together.

Maanagaram  isn’t a film which tries to explore the conflict between characters. In fact, it brushes this aspect of the story to make way for what it wants to achieve.

The main focus of the story is to see how far someone would go before they break down and how do they fight back once they reach that point.

In the end, although the whole plot of Maanagaram is based on a wide-range of co-incidences, it’s also a film which sucks you into its world and makes you uncomfortable, angry, desperate and then, leaves you with a tinge of hope. Maybe, that’s the whole point of the film.

Maanagaram movie review: A shocking night of clashing lives in Chennai

Lokesh kanagaraj’s debut work, maanagaram, works like a shakespearean play of mistaken identities. the medley of characters may get confusing in the beginning but it soon settles down to greater clarity and is peppered with surprises..

Maanagaram Director : Lokesh Kanagaraj Cast : Sundeep Kishan, Shri, Regina Cassandra, Madhusudhan, Charle Rating : 3.5 out of 5

Maanagaram stars Sundeep Kishan, Shri and Regina Cassandra in the lead roles.

Somewhere, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s debut work, Maanagaram (Big City), resembles a Shakespearean play of mistaken identities -- of men who suffer because they are at the wrong place and wrong time. The film follows the lives of several people in Chennai during a 48-hour period -- which sees the trials and tribulations of these men and women who learn from their personal disasters the value of goodness.

Shri is a young man pushed to the city from his small town by his girlfriend’s family, which feels that he can earn a respectable salary only in a teeming metropolis. But the path to his job interview - conducted by Regina Cassandra, who is fighting her own demons in the form of a boyfriend, Sundeep Kishan, a loafer adamantly refusing to earn and make a decent start in life - is strewn with mishaps. He gets beaten up by hoodlums who mistake him for Kishan, and in the bloody scuffle Shri loses his original certificates which he needs to firm up his appointment.

At another end, a little boy is kidnapped from school, and here again it is the wrong kid, and horror of horrors, he is the child of a notorious goonda, PKB (Madhusudhan), who specialises in third-degree torture of his detractors.

And there is also a cab driver, Charle, who gets an assignment in an information technology company (where Shri lands an assignment), but has no clue about the city roads - having just arrived into Chennai.

In a movie that picks up its tempo after nightfall and plays out mostly on the city’s deserted roads, we see a very well edited drama taking place at many levels. Kishan has been ordered by his policeman uncle to get out of the city for a while, but the young man keeps hanging outside Regina’s hostel in the hope that she would patch up with him. Somewhere else, we see PKB looking for his kidnapped son with the thugs demanding a huge ransom and sending him on a wild goose chase, while Charle is trying to take to Shri home.

These stories converge at a point - which is not exactly novel, for we have seen an excellent version of this kind of treatment in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Mexican work, Babel -- which is fascinating study of four inter-related events that unfold in different countries like Morocco, Mexico, US and Japan, but which converge in the end. Maanagaram may not play out in different cities, but is an equally gripping narrative about different people in different situations whose lives, in some kind of a remarkable coincidence, clash with one another on a lonely night.

Maanagaram may seem confusing in its first few minutes with a medley of characters fighting for screen space, but the work soon settles down to greater clarity and even narration -- which is peppered with surprises. And these, of course, keep your attention riveted to the story.

Kalinga Movie Review: కళింగ రివ్యూ - లేటెస్ట్ తెలుగు హార‌ర్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ మూవీ ఎలా ఉందంటే?

Kalinga Movie Review:
