Jogi movie review: Diljit Dosanjh delivers career-best performance in riveting drama on 1984 anti-Sikh riots

Jogi movie review: diljit dosanjh firmly establishes his credentials as an actor in ali abbas zafar’s brutal yet sensitive film on the aftermath of the 1984 anti-sikh violence in delhi..

If there is any doubt about Diljit Dosanjh ’s acting skills, Jogi should clear them once and for all. The singer-turned-actor delivers one of the best onscreen performances by a Bollywood leading man in recent times, bringing out vulnerability rarely seen in commercial Hindi cinema. He is deftly supported by a strong support cast and director Ali Abbas Zafar’s sensitive touch. It’s a well-made film on a sensitive issue that forces you think, even if it does go slightly overboard at times. Also read: Diljit Dosanjh on reliving 1984 riots on screen in Jogi: ‘These are stories I grew up with’

Jogi stars Diljit Dosanjh in the title role.

Jogi is set in Delhi’s Trilokpuri neighbourhood and depicts a three-day period immediately after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 that started a wave of anti-Sikh violence in the city. The story focuses on the titular hero, played by Diljit, and how he makes sure over a hundred of his community members escape Delhi even as a bloodthirsty local councillor and corrupt cops are out to slaughter them for political gain.

There have been many Indian films on the 1984 violence, most of them in Punjabi. But mainstream Hindi cinema has had few retellings of the horrors of that year. Jogi attempts to correct that and makes a bold choice by setting the story in the national capital so that it hits home harder. The film does not waste any time in exposition or long-drawn back stories of the characters. The ‘action’, if I may put it that inelegantly, begins in the first 10 minutes itself. Amidst shots of burning DTC buses and neighbourhoods, the true horrifying face of a riot is displayed. This is the only part of the film that goes a bit overboard. However, I do understand the need for it. Director Ali Abbas Zafar chose to pause on the violence and stay there a bit--bloodied corpses, burning men et al--because he needed the audience to understand what is at stake here.

Amidst all this chaos, Diljit stands out. The beauty and finesse with which he brings out the helplessness and vulnerability of his character would make any accomplished actor proud. Diljit carries this part of the film on his shoulders effortlessly until some formidable actors step in to share his burden. There is a scene, which is shown in the trailer as well, where some people beat up Jogi and his father in a bus. A hapless Jogi screams, “Hamari kya galti hai (what is our fault)?” That line and its delivery by Diljit physically pinches you.

Kumud Mishra plays the film's antagonist.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is at home, once again, as the idealistic cop who must ensure his friend Jogi and his family are safe even as his superiors want to score political brownie points by calling for a massacre. But its Kumud Mishra who is the scene-stealer with his fabulous act as the local councillor masterminding this massacre. The actor shows the true human motivation of a villain, making him a relatable but still disgustingly vile character. And there is Hiten Tejwani springing up a surprise with a truly unpredictable grey character as a cop with a vendetta against Jogi. He stands out in this crowd of formidable performances. Amyra Dastur has what can only be described as a cameo, in a flashback that sheds more light on Jogi’s character and history. Wish there was more of her and Jogi in the film.

The biggest achievement of Jogi is that it depicts all characters as human beings--flawed and broken--but humans nonetheless. There are no knights in shining armours and no evil demons. Even the bad guys are not religious fanatics but political opportunists, depicting a reality that has played out far too many times in modern-day India. There have been better films on communal violence but very few as layered and as real as Jogi.

The action and thrill are relentless, even if there are times when the film resorts to using some predictable tropes. But the film never lags, never lets go, and doesn’t descend into the unwatchable territory for any reason. Its under-two-hour runtime helps keep it taut. It does get a bit dull towards the second half as it begins to repeat itself and the plot does tend to meander before a swift resolution that does seem like an anti-climax out of nowhere.

The film may be unpalatable for some given its realism and bold depiction of administration's complicity in violence against a community, but it is an important watch nonetheless, and a step forward for Hindi cinema. Jogi releases on Netflix on September 16.

Jogi Movie Review: Diljit Dosanjh Emerges As A Hero With His Earnest Act In This Tale Of Tragedy & Hope

Star Cast: Diljit Dosanjh, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Kumud Mishra, Paresh Pahuja, Hiten Tejwani

Director: Ali Abbas Zafar

Right at the beginning of Jogi , director Ali Abbas Zafar introduces Diljit Dosanjh's protagonist with a shot where we see him looking into a mirror and slightly smiling when he ties his turban perfectly. As the film proceeds, this headgear symbolises something more than just a representation of the faith.

With some well-crafted scenes and emotions done right, the Tiger Zinda Hai director pulls off an evacuation thriller that talks about choosing friendship and hope during turbulent times.

What's Yay: Diljit Dosanjh

What's Nay: The finale act leaves you disappointed

Streaming on: Netflix

Story

Set in Delhi, 1984, the events in Jogi unfold four months after Operation Blue Star which had caused anger and outrage among the Sikh community across the world.

When Joginder Singh AKA Jogi (Diljit Dosanjh) and his elderly father are flung off a DTC bus by angry passengers after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, little do they know that there's another tragedy awaiting them at their home in Trilokpuri.

As they head towards their abode, the sight of the burning men and the bloodthirsty mob leaves Jogi horrified. However, he soon finds himself becoming the stumbling saviour of many Sikh families when a vitriol-spewing, shrewd local councillor Tejpal Arora (Kumud Mishra) singles out Sikhs from his constituency and announces a bounty on them for his political aspirations.

Spread over three days, the film then revolves around how Jogi along with his friends, Rawinder (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), a cop and Kaleem (Paresh Pahuja), a truck driver sets out to save several lives that are at stake due to Tejpal's hunger for power.

Direction

Director Ali Abbas Zafar retells the horror of the 1984 Anti-Sikh massacre with a fictitious tale seen through the lens of friendship. Known for churning blockbusters like Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai , he adapts a mainstream template for Jogi too and that works in its favour most of the time.

Zafar along with his writer Sukhmani Sadana, keeps the tension in the narrative intact throughout the film. The scene where a Sikh-smuggling truck stops at a supply farm infested with mobsters for fuel refilling has your heart in your mouth. The plot device of three people of different faiths uniting for a cause might sound a bit cliché, but Zafar succeeds to a large extent in keeping you engrossed in his storytelling with his effective scenes.

Having said that, the flashback sequence in the second half comes across as a bit misplaced but makes sense with respect to revealing the reason behind the action of one of the characters. One of the major letdowns of Jogi is Zafar reducing Tejpal's character to a caricature in the finale act and the watered-down climax which leaves you a tad unsatisfied.

Performances

Performances

Jogi belongs to Diljit Dosanjh. While we have often see the actor tickling our funny bone with his sense of humour, in this film, he gives us a glimpse of what a good actor he is. The way he portrays the innocence and helplessness of his character is remarkable.

There's a scene in the film where his character goes to Shams Baug to let go of his religious identity for a bigger cause. It's a close-up shot where Jogi, sitting by a water body, holds a few strands of his hair, looks at it with agonized eyes as a tear rolls down his eye. The way Diljit performs that sequence makes us realise that there's lots more to him than just playing breezy characters.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as the idealistic cop makes for a good team with Diljit and together, they make sure that there's enough going on the screen to keep you invested. Paresh Pahuja and Hiten Tejwani deliver what the script demands out of them.

Kumud Mishra gets a chance to make some impact before his role loses steam in the climax. Even though Amyra Dastur's cameo suffers from feeble writing, the actress makes sure that your eyes are on her.

Technical Aspects

Technical Aspects

Marcin Laskawiec's top-notch camerawork brings ample intensity and suspense on screen. Steven H Bernard with his taut editing makes sure that Jogi remains crisp from the first frame till the last.

Music

The songs in Jogi flow organically with the writing. 'Mere Sang Ho Rahi Hain Tafreeaan' is a track which bringing in some easy-flowing vibe in an otherwise somber narrative. The background score works fine for the film.

Verdict

There's a scene in Jogi where Diljit's character asks, " Samjh mein nahi aata nafrat ki itni aag logon ke dilon mein kaise hain. " To this, Zeeshan's Rawinder replies, " Koi paida thodi hota hai nafrat ki aag leke. Achanak ek din apne dost apne padosi khoon ka pyaasa ho jaata hain. " The latter's words ring true in the real world as well.

Despite the troupes in the narrative, Ali Abbas Zafar's Jogi still has your attention for putting out a larger message that hope is the one thing that can help us get through the darkest of times.

We give 3 stars out of 5 to Diljit Dosanjh's Jogi .

jogi movie review in hindi

Diljit Dosanjh

Jogi — out now on Netflix — is an intense and moving drama set against the backdrop of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. While the film features fictional characters, it feels realistic as the narrative manages to highlight the human cost of the tragedy.

Jogi revolves around Joginder (Diljit Dosanjh), a charmismatic young man from a working class family. His world, like that of many around him, is turned upside down following the Prime Minister's assassination. He soon finds himself fighting for his very survival as 'Delhi burns'. The rest of film revolves around his attempts at protecting his people from the imminent danger.

The mere fact that Jogi deals with such a sensitive issue alone makes it a commendable effort. Its inherently hard-hitting storyline reaches its potential due to the fairly well-written screenplay.

Jogi begins with a scene in which the protagonist gears up to head out for some work. We see him spending time with his family and talking about his plans for a birthday party to be held in the evening. This sequence is highly relatable and makes it easy for one to instantly connect with the reel action.

The makers then proceed to 'show' the destruction caused by the riots. In a particularly disturbing scene a character is burnt alive in his shop for no fault of his own. In another equally emotional sequence, the protagonist tries to stoically console a character after she loses a dear one in the riots. The staging of the scene is quite impressive as the silences do the talking, which is regarded as the hallmark of good storytelling.

Jogi then plays out as a survival drama as Joginder, with the help of a friend (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), tries to help his near and dear ones escape to safety. This sets the stage for a few chilling sequences, which hit the right notes with their organic intensity. An action scene, involving Diljit and Zeeshan, works well too. It feels realistic and raw. There's absolutely nothing even mildly over-the-top about it. It is, however, the heartbreaking climax that proves to be the film's best sequence.

On the flip side, the placement of a key flashback scene could have been better. That said, it does manage to set the stage for an emotional exchange between two characters. The pacing is also a bit slow at certain points in the opening half an hour, but this is not a major issue.

Coming to the performances, Diljit is the heart and soul of Jogi. He underplays things quite beautifully, letting his eyes do the talking. Zeeshan too is fabulous. The actor internalises the character and gets the accent right. Hiten Tejwani, however, doesn't get enough scope. That said, he is quite sincere every time he appears on-screen.

There is not much scope for music in Jogi as this is a highly realistic drama. The makers, luckily, refrain from adding songs to the narrative for the heck of it. The cinematography and lighting do justice to its grim and heart-wrenching premise. The other technical aspects are upto the mark.

To sum up, Jogi is a bold and effective attempt from Ali Abbas Zafar that bears testimony to the Sultan director's range as a storyteller. Jogi Movie Review (2022)

Ali abbas zafar's 'jogi', with diljit dosanjh and now on netflix, is a solid thriller-cum-drama set amidst the 1984 anti-sikh riots.

Jogi Movie Review in English

Jogi Movie Cast & Crew

The opening scenes of Ali Abbas Zafar's Jogi , set in 1984, four months after Operation Blue Star, are right out of the Mainstream Screenwriting Textbook. Before you depict tragedy, give us the happy-family scenario . And so we meet Jogi, played by Diljit Dosanjh, and his joint family. They are having parathas for breakfast. The same sequence establishes the close-knit quality of the relationships, the fact that the father is due for retirement, the fact that Jogi's older brother runs a shop, and also the inherent Sikh-ness of the protagonist. The first time we set eyes on Jogi, he is looking into a mirror, perfecting his turban, and he smiles when that perfection is attained. And then, Indira Gandhi is shot dead, and things change forever. We soon see why we needed that shot of Jogi and his turban.

The film follows an Argo -like narrative, where a number of Sikhs have to be rescued from the clutches of not just mobs, but also the police that have let loose those mobs. Kumud Mishra plays a Councillor who thinks he can rise up the ranks by organising a massacre of Sikhs. He justifies himself by quoting Newton: "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction". He assembles a band of bounty hunters and offers a thousand rupees per Sardar killed. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is at the scene. He plays a cop with a conscience, and he is appalled. These scenes, again, are right out of the Mainstream Screenwriting Textbook, with a Muslim and a Hindu determined to help the Sikhs. This whole stretch, which makes up the first thirty-odd minutes, isn't bad , exactly. It's just that there is an easy sentimentality, which doesn't cut very deep. We realise the horror of the situation but we don't feel it.

But after this set-up, the film takes off. We get a fairly tense set piece inside the lion's den, so to speak. Another shot, where the camera enters a kitchen, gives us a jolt. At such times, I wondered how much better Jogi would have been when seen on a big screen. The best scene has Jogi exploding in rage, against the very friend who is helping him. After being strong for so long, he finally feels like a victim, and it is good to see that he is not always in control of his emotions. Diljit is perfectly cast. He may not be able to sell big speeches too well, but the innate innocence he projects on screen is used to wonderful effect. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, on the other hand, doesn't register as strongly. Perhaps it's the fact that the character he plays has no dimensions other than "a very decent human being", and one-note nobility is among the hardest qualities to put across by an actor and also endure by the audience.

The most interesting writing decision occurs when a face-off segues into a flashback. At first, the change of rhythm threw me off, but then we see that this flashback fits perfectly. One, it establishes the motives of the character played by Hiten Tejwani. But more importantly, it shows us that even if you are friends with people from other faiths, that friendship sometimes comes with a boundary-line that must not be crossed. In other words, it wasn't just Indira Gandhi's death that 'othered' the Sikhs. They were already treated as different. And when we return to the present with that knowledge, the film becomes more poignant. Jogi could have been better, more tense, but it's still a solid thriller-cum-drama that does not try to do too much. Instead of covering a large canvas, the screenplay sticks to one group of Sikhs from one locality – and the extrapolation happens in our heads. Ali Abbas Zafar gave us two solid mainstream movies with Gunday and Sultan , before losing his mojo with Tiger Zinda Hai and Bharat . Flaws and all, Jogi is a welcome return to form.

Jogi Movie Review: JOGI tells a moving tale in a sensitive and yet mainstream manner and rests on brilliant performance.

Jogi feature a moving tale in a sensitive yet mainstream manner and rests on brilliant performances, jogi review {3.0/5} & review rating.

JOGI is the story of an ordinary man who becomes a hero. The year is 1984. Joginder Singh aka Jogi ( Dijit Dosanjh ) lives with his parents in Lane no 6, Trilokpuri, Delhi. His sister Heer (Charu Kumar) is married to Tajinder (K P Singh) and they, along with their son Prab (Samarjit Singh Mahajan) also stay in the same locality. On October 31, 1984, the Prime Minister of India is assassinated by her Sikh guards. As a result, members of the Sikh community start getting attacked in the National Capital, mostly on the orders of the higher authorities in the government. Tejpal Arora (Kumud Mishra), the MLA of Trilokpuri, realizes that his chances of getting a ticket in the Lok Sabha elections would be more if he massacres Sikhs in his constituency. He orders Inspector Kuldeep and Inspector Chautala ( Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub ) to help the rioters with the massacre. The attacks begin in Trilokpuri. Tajinder is burned alive along with his shop. Jogi, his family, Heer and other Sikh residents of Lane no 6 take refuge in a nearby Gurudwara. Chautala is an old friend of Jogi and he doesn’t agree with the idea of killing innocent people. He meets Jogi in the Gurudwara and advises him that he should run away with his family to Punjab, where he’ll be the safest. Jogi refuses and makes it clear that he’ll escape with everyone present in the shrine. Chautala understands his point of view. He devises an escape plan. Jogi cuts his hair short with a heavy heart and puts down his turban so that he doesn’t look like a Sikh. Both then approach their friend, Kaleem Ansari (Paresh Pahuja), who runs a truck business. Kaleem gets a truck ready and the trio fills a portion of the vehicle with weapons and other items. The truck is taken to the Gurudwara and Jogi orders the senior citizens and the kids to hop on the truck. He then drives it towards Mohali, located at the Punjab border. Chautala escorts the truck with his police vehicle so that he doesn’t get stopped or frisked. Meanwhile, Inspector Katiyal aka Lali (Hiten Tejwani), an old enemy of Jogi, learns about the latter’s plan. He complains about it to Tejpal. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Jogi

Ali Abbas Zafar and Sukhmani Sadana's story is moving and yet, has commercial trappings. There have been several films in Hindi and Punjabi cinema on the anti-Sikh riots but JOGI stands out. Ali Abbas Zafar and Sukhmani Sadana's screenplay is simple and engaging. However, the flashback portion in the second half hampers the impact. Ali Abbas Zafar and Sukhmani Sadana's dialogues pack a punch.

Ali Abbas Zafar's direction is neat. The subject is a bit niche but he handles it in a commercial manner. He also doesn’t go overboard while making it mainstream. The riot scenes are well executed and the same goes for the emotional moments. He also nicely adds to the thrill element. The message of religious identity comes across convincingly. On the flipside, the first half moves at a slow pace. Also, Ali falters majorly in the second half. When the tension is at an all-time high, he suddenly goes off-track with the flashback portion involving Kammo ( Amyra Dastur ). There’s no doubt that this track was important to show what went wrong between Jogi and Lali. But ideally, the director should have started this film with the love track. It would have helped in understanding the equation between the characters. It would have also made sense to the viewers why Lali is exposing Jogi in front of the MLA.

JOGI starts with a quick introduction of the protagonist and his family. In no time, the focus shifts to the assassination followed by the riots. A few scenes that stand out in the first half are Heer being in denial about her hubby’s death, Jogi cutting off his hair and Jogi apologizing to his mother. The scene where Jogi, in order to escape from the MLA’s goons, is compelled to enter his supply farm, with the Sikhs hidden in his truck, is a nail-biting one. The madness at the Karnal Toll Booth is thrilling. The scene at the Mohali Police check post is moving and yet applause-worthy. Another clap-worthy sequence is when Chautala smartly gets the whole force to raid the Gurudwara. The flashback portion is nice, but as said before, it comes too late in the day. Also, Lali's change of heart is not easy to digest. The finale is moving.

Jogi | Official Trailer | Diljit Dosanjh, Hiten Tejwani, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub | Netflix India

Diljit Dosanjh is mostly known for light-hearted roles. In JOGI, there’s no scope for him to be in a light mood and delivers a power-packed performance. His persona and acting are such that he looks convincing while he’s vulnerable and also when he decides to fight back. Kumud Mishra is great as the antagonist. Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, as expected, delivers a bravura performance. Hiten Tejwani is decent. Amyra Dastur looks lovely and is fine in a cameo. Paresh Pahuja lends able support. Neelu Kohli (Jogi’s mother) leaves a mark. Arvinder Singh Gill (Jogi’s father), Charu Kumar, Samarjit Singh Mahajan, K P Singh, Apinderdeep Singh (Sukhi; Jogi's brother), Harnoor Babbar (Tejpal's daughter) and Noyrika (Shehnaaz; Kaleem's wife) are fair.

Music works well with the film’s narrative.  'Saiyyaan Ve'  is the best of the lot and comes at an important juncture. The rock feel is catchy.  'Tarfreeyan'  is forgettable while  'Mittar Pyaare Nu'  is moving. Julius Packiam's background score is one of the USPs of the film as it adds to the thrill. Marcin Laskawiec's cinematography is appropriate. Paramjeet Dhillon's action is effective and is not disturbing. Rajnish Hedao, Snigdha Basu and Sumit Basu's production design is reminiscent of the bygone era. Red Chillies VFX and Netfx Mumbai's VFX is rich. Loveleen Bains' costumes are realistic. Steven Bernard's editing could have been sharper.

On the whole, JOGI tells a moving tale in a sensitive and yet mainstream manner and rests on the brilliant performance of Diljit Dosanjh. However, the weak second half dilutes the impact to an extent.

‘Jogi’ movie review: Finding humanity in the ashes of trust

Diljit dosanjh has a knack for generating an emotional bond with the audience, but somehow he gravitates towards roles that are spotless, as filmmaker ali abbas zafar revisits the 1984 anti-sikh riots in delhi.

An engaging take on how personal animosity takes a political and communal tinge during riots, Ali Abbas Zafar’s  Jogi  revisits the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi to tell a tale of friendship, betrayal, and greed for power.

Visually, Zafar, who is known for directing big-ticket films, manages to depict the carnage on the streets of Delhi after the death of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, when an entire community was targeted and robbed of its dignity. Zafar looks for humanity amidst the ashes of trust and finds a tale of four friends.

When Jogi (Diljit Dosanjh) decides to save the people of his lane in Trilokpuri from the fire of communal passions, his friends Rawinder Chautala (Zeeshan Ayyub) and Kaleem Ansari (Paresh Pahuja) put their job and lives on the line to save the faith of their friend.

Rawinder, a police officer, plots an escape route even when it means going against the directions of the local Councillor Arora (Kumud Mishra) who sees a political opportunity in adversity. If Jogi has Rawinder by his side, Arora has sub-inspector Lali (Hiten Tejwani), the fourth friend who is nurturing hate for Jogi after a personal loss eroded their friendship, to carry out his agenda.

Drawing from real events, it could have been an interesting combination of fact and fiction, but the writers — Sukhmani Sadana and Zafar — fail to fill the gaps in between, and as a result, the transitions strike a false note.

Backed by a booming background sound, the idea of great escape prepares us for a thriller, but the way they negotiate the obstacles, the ride becomes too convenient to pass muster in the streaming space that demands more drafts than a Salman Khan tentpole. When the story goes into a flashback, the narrative gathers pace and belief, but the film never fully lives up to the gritty and gripping premise.

In the beginning, the performances remind us of the commercial films made in the mid-1980s when tears of glycerin worked. Drone shots don’t necessarily add depth to performances, and Jogi’s home and surroundings have the nuance of daily soaps. As a result, the pain of parting with the religious identity doesn’t seep through. But as the film progresses, the acting becomes a lot more compelling.

Diljit has a knack for generating an emotional bond with the audience but somehow he gravitates towards roles that are spotless and characters that could do no wrong. Here, even in the love story, it is the girl (Amyra Dastur) who is almost held guilty for falling in love with Jogi and coming in between two friends. Diljit is trying to be a hero in a film where there could be none and Zafar allows him that space.

The characters around Jogi appear more human. Hiten is a revelation as the friend turned foe, while Zeeshan Ayyub is solid as ever and Kumud is imperious as the self-seeking politician. Armed with some incisive lines, he shows how old tools could still be sharpened to make even cardboard characters irresistible.

Jogi is currently streaming on Netflix

Jogi movie review: Diljit Dosanjh shines in effective Netflix drama that slowly loses its own efficiency

Jogi fictionalises a shameful chapter of history on screen, forcing viewers to confront the ever-changing definition of “anti-nationals” — how much it takes to prove your loyalty to your motherland and how little it takes to incite hatred..

Poulomi Das

Diljit Dosanjh in Jogi

Ali Abbas Zafar’s Jogi is the second Hindi film in the last two months to kickstart its action in the backdrop of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Unlike in Laal Singh Chaddha, where the assassination of Indira Gandhi — the then-Indian prime minister — was employed as a subtext for Sikh identity in the country, Jogi employs the anti-Sikh pogrom as a way of examining the faultlines of politics, violence, and compassion.

That is to say it fictionalises a shameful chapter of history on screen, forcing viewers to confront the ever-changing definition of “anti-nationals” — how much it takes to prove your loyalty to your motherland and how little it takes to incite hatred.

Co-written by Sukhmani Sadana and Zafar, Jogi doesn’t waste time in getting to its point. Set in Delhi four months after Operation Blue Star, the film opens in the home of a middle-class Sikh family. The first time we see Jogi (Diljit Dosanjh), he stares at himself in the mirror practicing a smile. The grin on his face lasts for less than a second but it suggests a lingering sadness, contrasting the exuberance he puts up at the dinner table with his animated family. The date is October 31, 1984 — the day Gandhi is assassinated by two of her Sikh guards in retaliation to Operation Blue Star, an event that left a noticeable scar on the country’s Sikh population. Jogi and his family don’t know it yet but they’re about to be caught in the eye of the storm.

The brutality begins almost immediately: Councilor Tejpal Arora (a scheming Kumud Mishra) gathers the officers at the Trilokpuri police station and casually blurts out orders to kill Sikhs and erase any evidence of their existence. Convicts are fed mutton biryani before being armed with weapons and released to attack Sikhs in the city — there’s a bounty of ₹1,000 per dead body; ₹5,000 if it is a dead body of an “eminent sardar”. In the scenes before, we already see the extent of the inhumane attacks: a shopkeeper is burnt alive inside his shop, his cries for help falling to deaf ears; a family with kids is stopped and burnt alive inside their car; scores of fleeing men are shot; scared Sikhs cut their hair and remove their turbans in their desperation to live.

jogi movie review in hindi

Only one police-officer Ravinder Chautala (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub) flinches at the merciless orders. Soon, he’s handed a voters list too with the names of Sikhs marked out in red. Tejpal tells him to ensure that they’re wiped out by the next day or then, before the Indian Army assumes control of the city in three days. One of the highlighted names is of his friend Jogi. As violence erupts in the city, Ravinder rushes out to ensure Jogi and his family’s safety. He finds his friend and a hundred other Sikhs crouched in fear inside the neighborhood gurudwara. Both friends then take an oath to cross borders, evade checkpoints, and ferry everyone to Punjab without being caught. Kaleem, another Muslim friend, joins into their plan, supplying the duo with a truck that can carry all the elders, women, and kids.

Given that Jogi unfolds over three excruciating days, Zafar — whose last release was the middling Bharat (2019), that spread across decades of modern Indian history — works overtime in creating an atmosphere of dread, teasing out and sustaining tension. Working with his Tiger Zinda Hai  (2017) and Bharat cinematographer Marcin Laskaweic’s roving camera, the filmmaker shoots the action in long takes, fluid motions, and close-ups as if to suggest the inherent claustrophobia of being trapped in your own home. The retelling of the violence isn’t as searing or stylish as anything Avik Mukhopadhyay and Shoojit Sircar managed in Sardar Udham  (2021) but it’s effective in its suggestion of chaos. Some of the scenes are edited too animatedly to register with a thud and it’s the implication of violence at any point that proves to be more blood-curdling. In that, Jogi makes for a convincing survival thriller — straightforward enough to keep viewers invested in the proceedings.

Much of it is largely due to the film’s casting. Mishra is efficiently utilized as a villainous politician willing to translate his greed for a promotion into sheer bloodlust. Still, it’s the scenes with his teen daughter that rankle, where we get to see his calm demeanour. Locating the humane part of someone sanctioning barbaric human right violations proves to be a sly way to build a portrait of an antagonist.

In the same way, if the film succeeds in making viewers invest in the proceedings despite its lengthy 160-minute runtime, it’s solely owing to the sensational two-header turns by Dosanjh and Zeeshan Ayub.

Dosanjh’s casting seems predictable given the nature of the storytelling but the actor justifies his presence with a solid turn that wavers only slightly. More importantly, he proves to be a generous co-actor willing to shrink in scenes he shares with Zeeshan Ayub, arguably one of the most underrated actors working in Hindi cinema today. The actor, on his part, doesn’t miss a single beat, alternating between guilt, dread, and fear seamlessly.

Zafar’s grand flourishes in Jogi don’t always land but it helps that it’s comparatively easy to look beyond it. The film’s premise underlines the spirit of brotherhood, perhaps, a little forcefully envisioning a friend group made up of three different faiths coming together in the face of unimaginable tragedy. But the screenplay is enlivened by the small flourishes: a group of Sikhs hiding inside a dargah, a Muslim man safekeeping his Sikh friend’s kara , imagining the police uniform as both an accessory to violence and a way out of it. It’s in the film’s refusal to box people and their faiths that really makes  Jogi sing.

In that sense, the narrative trappings that Jogi falls prey to only complicate its own straightforward appeal. It’s frustrating to grapple with the film’s empty examination of the political climate of the country — the Congress party is never explicitly mentioned, neither is the opposition. There are only vague references made to “higher authorities,” an indictment of perhaps both the threat of censorship in the country and the ways filmmakers limit themselves while telling an inherently political story. But without a political bent, Jogi often falls victim to becoming nothing beyond a trauma film.

Even more middling is the film’s detour into an ill-placed, doomed love story and a strained friendship in the last 30 minutes. It’s here that the film starts coming undone, resembling a story that undermines itself. I wish Zafar, one of the few Muslim storytellers working in the Hindi film industry, had taken a more focused and tighter approach to the film simply because it feels like a course-correction on so many levels. Jogi might be set in the past but its sheer existence intends to reveal equally sinister things about the present — about the cyclic nature of intolerance, about the discrimination against minorities, and about the identity politics of filmmaking in the first place.

Jogi is streaming on Netflix India.

Jogi Review – A Thrilling and Emotional Roller Coaster Ride

jogi-review-netflix-film

Jogi is a riveting, action-packed film showing how compassion and friendship can win even in the face of extreme adversity.

Jogi is an action drama film directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and set in 1984 Delhi during the anti-Sikh riots that occurred following the assassination of Indian prime minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards. While the movie’s story is fictional, the riots and the horrific acts committed during those troubling times are not.

In the film, Diljit Dosanjh plays the titular hero – a middle-class man caught in the crossfire determined to save as many members of his family and neighbors who reside at Lane 6 as he can. He is helped by his two friends: Rawinder (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), who’s a police officer, and truck driver Kaleem (Paresh Pahuja). Kumud Mishra plays the main villain of the story, Tajpal, the municipal councilor who sees the riots as a way to advance his political career.

The film starts by giving the viewer a brief historical context before introducing the main character and his family having breakfast on the morning of the riots. All family members are enjoying their time together and exchanging playful banter while blissfully unaware of the brewing storm. It doesn’t take long until the rioters claim their first victims, one of them being Jogi’s brother-in-law, a store owner burned to death in his own shop.

The movie does a good job at presenting the initial shock and confusion on the streets as rioters appear out of nowhere and burn entire families alive in their cars, shoot people in the middle of the road, pour gasoline on unsuspecting passers-by, and force members of the Sikh community to seek refuge wherever they can. It’s chaos all around. By nightfall, Rawinder offers to help Jogi and his remaining family members flee the city. Instead, Jogi convinces Rawinder to help him protect the entire neighborhood.

Diljit Dosanjh is masterful in his portrayal of a normal guy having to step up and become a hero in what’s an extremely abnormal situation. The rest of the cast also gives solid performances, particularly Kumud Mishra in his villainous role. Watching scenes of Tajpal parenting his young daughter while overseeing a full-blown massacre chilled me to the bone.

Director Ali Abbas Zafar did a fantastic job at capturing the fear and anxiety these characters were going through. For nearly two hours the film kept me at the edge of my seat. I wanted Jogi to succeed in his quest and I wanted to see the Lane 6 residents survive their ordeal.

Overall, the film is an action-packed emotional roller coaster. It has action, adventure, friendship, a love story, and a lot of heart. The only downfall is the excessive use of flashbacks (and flashbacks within the flashbacks). Removing those entirely and cutting the run-time a little would have elevated it to a distinguished level of filmmaking.

Jogi (2022) Netflix Movie Review – A nail-biting tear-jerker with a bittersweet ending

A nail-biting tear-jerker with a bittersweet ending

From the time the trailer for Netflix’s Diljit Dosanjh starter ‘Jogi’ released, there had been a lot of chatter about this movie. The Punjabi singer and actor had slowly made his way into Bollywood. Jogi marks another hybrid venture from the fan-favourite actor that keeps viewers at the edge of their seats in a gripping, 2-hour-long movie.

Jogi is emotional and jarring to many who are closely linked to the riots, especially viewers from the Sikh community. Jogi has an ending that will surely make emotional individuals shed a tear or two.

Based on the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots, Jogi tells the story of a Sikh man named Jogi whose goal is to save his family, friends and fellow neighbours from a massacre that killed thousands of Sikhs.

After the assassination of the Indian Prime Minister by two Sikh men, the public sentiment against the entire clan had changed overnight and people had started growing blood-hungry.

Taking advantage of the acrimony of the masses, a politician tries to channel his greed by fuelling the massacre and eliminating all Sikhs from Delhi’s Trilokpuri in order to seek a higher political position. Jogi centers on a story of a man and his best friends who are all striving to save the Sikhs from being brutally murdered.

Going into the movie, I expected great bloodshed and a brutal massacre. Although we do get that, Netflix’s Jogi is a muted version of the truth. The gripping truth about the way many innocent Sikhs were killed is overlooked in order to fit the plot of Jogi saving his neighbours and friends.

The little part of the brutal massacre that was shown however, is both tight and infuriating. It makes your blood boil so much so that you wish our main man would go in guns blazing and avenge the death of his family members and fellow Sikhs.

However, that is not what a common man faced with life and death would do and the story highlights how the biggest goal of the Sikhs was not to attack and avenge but escape and survive. Jogi’s survival instincts kick in and he does something most Sikhs would never imagine doing – he chops off his hair.

The first half of Jogi is gripping and exciting whereas the second half is emotionally draining. One scene in particular that sent chills down my spine depicts Jogi and his cop friend, Rawinder, scanning the colony for carcasses of Sikhs in order to convince Tejpal.

The Sikhs that were left to burn and die in cars, on the street, and inside their homes were all very jarring for someone who is learning about the brutal riots for the first time. The movie, with its nuanced cinematography, aims to highlight the issues significant to the Sikh community.

The idea of sacrifice can be seen when Jogi looks at the chopped hair as his neighbour chops her son’s long mane. In a similar way, Jogi’s hair is brought towards his face as he himself cuts his hair. When Kaleem remembers to take Jogi’s Kada (Sikh bangle) from his hand, an ornament that defines Sikh swordsmanship, it implied that without his hair and Kada, Jogi was essentially powerless.

Despite that, he tried his best to save his people which makes the movie a story revolving around the victory of good over evil and right over wrong. At times though, this movie can seem half-baked with its muted retelling of a wild and brutal massacre. However, some performances really stand out.

Diljit plays a rather soft-spoken and muted character which is why this movie feels so refreshing. He’s not playing a loud and obnoxious stereotype that Bollywood has set for the Sikhs, but a realistic version of someone who is dealing with a traumatic life event. Casting an actual Sikh was probably the makers’ best choice and Diljit really has my heart with his performance in and as Jogi.

Other than Diljit, actors like Hiten Tejwani and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub really portray two different kinds of friendship in Jogi. Hiten is really good as a villain so it is refreshing seeing him play a grey character aside from the usual ‘righteous man’ image he is known for over the years.

Kumud Mishra is good as Tejpal too, but not as menacing as a thrilling story like this would expect. Amyra Dastur did her best as Kammo but the plot of Jogi’s lover seemed forced only to create conflict and to justify the anger behind Laali’s actions.

Just like many other movies with a patriotic backdrop, Jogi too has an emotional background score. The dialogue is powerful but not overwhelming, with a religious sentiment which is playing safe for a movie like this.

Personally, I really liked the movie. I wish there was more drama or chaos to it in order to justify the bittersweet end. Since the main focus of the movie was the massacre, the sudden romantic aspect with Kammo seemed abrupt.

The makers could have started with an introduction of Jogi’s love interest and set up his conflict with Laali, in the beginning, to justify the latter’s enraged drive to have Jogi killed. With all that being said though, Jogi is a nail-biting watch that keeps you wanting to reach the end in order to see the Sikh community finally get the freedom they deserve.

What's the Story?

JOGI (Diljit Dosanjh) is the title character, a man who acted to help save the lives of fellow Sikhs during a dark and violent period in Indian history only 38 years ago. Twenty million Sikhs live in India -- only 1.7 percent of the population -- with their own religion, practices, and distinctive garb (the men wear turbans). In 1984, India's Hindu prime minister Indira Gandhi sent troops to attack an important Sikh temple, supposedly a stronghold of armed insurgent Sikhs. Soon after, one of her Sikh bodyguards assassinated her. In retaliation, local politicians and law enforcement encouraged and armed vigilante groups to kill Sikhs and destroy their property, killing somewhere between 8,000 and 17,000 Sikhs across the country in a matter of days. The attacks were especially horrific in Delhi, prompting Jogi to take action. At great personal risk, he and his childhood friend Rawinder (Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub), now a police officer ordered to massacre Sikhs, secure a truck to hide Delhi Sikhs and smuggle them through army checkpoints to safety. In the meantime, Indian groups continued shooting, raping, and dousing people and property with kerosene and setting them afire. Hatred, prejudice, discrimination, and the violence they breed are on full display here.

Is It Any Good?

Jogi is a heartfelt telling of this shameful moment in Indian history. Director Abbas Ali Zafar handles the logistical difficulty of mass violence skillfully. But too often it feels as if the director doesn't trust the material. We are moved by the plight of the innocent Sikhs. We don't need long dialogue-free, slow-motion depictions of, well, anything. Jogi realizes he must toss his turban and cut his long hair in order to pose as a truck driver and save Sikhs. Sikhs are being murdered left and right, but the movie comes to a halt as he unhurriedly cuts his hair, seemingly ignoring the death and destruction going on all around him.

Displaying similarly imprudent directorial judgment, a truckload of hidden Sikhs walks to safety, in slow motion. Again, the tension has been painstakingly built by the filmmakers with the aid of a terrific performance by Dosanjh in the lead role and we breathlessly await the rescue of innocent people still in jeopardy, but instead we watch people walking! It's another ill-advised interruption of the movie's otherwise appropriate tone and pace. These, and more, are regrettable disruptions to the riveting and moving story being told.

Netflix’s Jogi: Is the Indian Movie Based on a True Story? Where Was it Filmed?

of Netflix’s Jogi: Is the Indian Movie Based on a True Story? Where Was it Filmed?

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Netflix’s ‘Jogi’ is an Indian historical drama movie that takes place in the 1980s. Set in India’s capital, Delhi, it revolves around the titular character (Diljit Dosanjh), a young Sikh man. In the aftermath of the assassination of India’s Prime Minister, the city is fraught with riots that target ordinary Sikh citizens. Jogi and two others band together to save as many innocent people as possible to facilitate their safe passage to Punjab. As tensions rose among the people, three friends from different walks of life organized one of the largest rescue missions ever seen.

The movie depicts how the life of a whole community is altered to an extreme extent due to the actions of others. It not just delves into the humanitarian side of the tragedy but also looks at the political aspects that shaped the series of events shown on screen. Naturally, many people are curious to know if ‘Jogi’ is based on a true story and, if yes, what were the reasons behind such a crisis. Let’s explore the details together. Shall we?

Jogi: Inspired by the Events Unfolded During the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

Yes, ‘Jogi’ is partially based on a true story. While the riots and tragedy shown in the movie are inspired by reality, the tale of Jogi and his friends is a fictional creation by writers Sukhmani Sadana and Ali Abbas Zafar. The anti-Sikh riots depicted in the movie took place in 1984 and were not localized to India’s capital. They spread across the nation following the death of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

The starting point of the events that led to the horrors depicted in the Diljit Dosanjh-starrer can be linked to Operation Blue Star, a military operation that took place between June 1 and June 10, 1984. In 1982, Khalistani movement leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his supporters launched a massive campaign to ask for a sovereign Sikh state and moved into the premises of the Golden Temple, AKA Harmandir Sahib.

To remove Bhindranwale and the rest of the militants from the Harmandir Sahib, the Indian government launched Operation Blue Star . The decision to carry out a military operation within a religious site was met with high resistance from several groups within India. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi gave the mission the green flag to end Bhindranwale’s campaign. After the operation ended, the number of casualties was in the hundreds, including militant and civilian deaths.

The official figures for the same varied between the government and independent sources, but none denied that innocent blood was spilled within holy Sikh premises. Moreover, Harmandir Sahib and Akal Takht were heavily damaged due to massive shelling, and Gandhi’s decision was heavily criticized due to the innocent casualties.

Sikhs in and outside India denounced the Prime Minister’s actions as an attack against their religion and culture. Given the negative sentiments among the religious community towards her, she was advised to remove any Sikhs from her protection detail. However, Gandhi felt such an action would fuel the anti-Sikh sentiment slowly rising in the country. Regardless, she insisted on not changing her bodyguards and was especially adamant about Beant Singh, apparently her favorite.

On October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by Beant and Satwant Singh, the latter having joined her protection detail only five months before the incident. Both the assassins were apprehended by the rest of the Prime Minister’s protection detail. Following the incident, the anti-Sikh sentiment within the nation reached its peak. In several places around India, community members were attacked and even killed for being Sikh.

The mobs burned down houses and destroyed businesses affiliated with Sikhs, yet the worst riots occurred in Delhi. Among the thousands killed or displaced due to the riots, a significant portion hailed from the Indian capital. For a long time, it was speculated by different organizations that the riots in Delhi were systematically organized. Many claimed that the events in the city were orchestrated by the supporters and members of the Congress party, with which Gandhi was affiliated.

Many Congress officials allegedly provided rioters with voter lists to mark the homes and businesses of Sikhs, allowing the mob to target the community easily. The number of deceased due to the anti-Sikh riots rose to thousands, with Delhi having more than two-thirds of the casualties. Though the government claimed that the riots led to the death of 3,350 Sikhs across the nation (2,800 in Delhi), many independent sources have stated that the actual number lies between 8,000 and 17,000.

Furthermore, Akal Takht, the governing body of Sikhs, claimed the killings as genocide, and many independent and government-controlled organizations have labeled the events as a violation of human rights. In the aftermath of the riots, many high-profile politicians were tried for their roles in the tragedy. While several were imprisoned for life (and one death sentence ), many high-profile individuals walked free. In December 2018, Sajjan Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court, making him the first high-profile conviction surrounding the 1984 riots.

Apart from the real-life elements in ‘Jogi,’ one might wonder what exactly led to the creation of the titular character, and director Ali Abbas Zafar has the answer for you. In an interview, he stated that the movie focuses on finding hope in the middle of chaos. Zafar further shared that he and the team carefully curated facts and built a fictional story around them, and thus, some elements have been embellished for creative liberty.

In addition, the director hopes the audience resonates with the movie’s message of love triumphing over all tragedies. Though the characters and the storylines in ‘Jogi’ are fictional, the broader themes and issues presented in the movie are rooted in reality. The makers have tried their best to depict the hardships and horrors that the Sikh community went through due to the 1984 riots. The emotions and actions of different characters are inspired by real-life accounts of the survivors and eyewitnesses.

Jogi Filming Locations

Netflix’s ‘Jogi’ was filmed in India, specifically in Delhi. Marcin Laskawiec did the cinematography for the movie. Given the setting and story of the Ali Abbas Zafar directorial, the production spot seems quite fitting, so let’s explore the same in more detail.

Delhi, India

‘Jogi’ was lensed in Delhi, AKA the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, which is home to New Delhi, the nation’s capital. Since the story is mainly centered around events in the city during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the cast and crew recorded pivotal portions on location against suitable backdrops. Viewers can easily spot well-known areas in Delhi in numerous scenes. Places like Connaught Place have been shown to emphasize the story’s setting and give viewers a glimpse into the life of Delhiites.

Eagle-eyed audience members will be able to easily spot the usage of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses in the movie. One of the most heartwrenching scenes is shot within an old-style DTC bus. As of writing, the city barely uses the same model of buses as the DTC has moved on to using Low-floor vehicle models. Such time-appropriate elements were used to keep the movie’s story as authentic as possible. Furthermore, several scenes were lensed on various college campuses in Delhi, as Jogi is a student at the start of the movie.
