Dear Mr. Afolabi,

Here is an opportunity to show your credentials when writing an application letter for a teaching job even if it is for a primary school.

State your relevant educational qualifications, emphasis on relevance including degrees, diplomas, and teaching certifications (for example, the Nigerian Certificate in Education – NCE).

The aim is to show your teaching experience. Mention the grade levels and subjects you’ve taught.

Don’t just list duties, show your achievements that are related to teaching. Did you help students improve their test scores? Implement a successful teaching method?

I hold a BSC in Child Development and Therapy.  An NCE from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, and a master’s degree in Child care and organizational development.

In my previous role at Bright Stars Academy, I effectively taught English Language Arts to Grade 8 students for three years. I implemented interactive learning methods, resulting in a 15% increase in their average test scores. Additionally, I spearheaded a school-wide reading program that fostered a love for literature among students.

Take some time to research the school’s values and mission statement. Show how your teaching philosophy aligns with the school’s goals. For example, if the school emphasizes a strong foundation in core subjects, highlight your experience in building a solid understanding of those fundamentals.

I particularly admire Ideal International School’s focus on holistic student development. My teaching approach prioritizes not only academic excellence but also critical thinking and effective communication skills, which aligns perfectly with your school’s vision.

An important aspect to list in your application for a teaching job is your passion for education and your commitment to student success.

Share personal anecdotes that highlight your enthusiasm for teaching and your ability to inspire and motivate students.

Outline your tutoring style and the values you hold as a teacher that can help your potential employer know more about your approach to teaching.

Last summer, while volunteering at a science camp, I witnessed a young girl’s face light up as she grasped the concept of photosynthesis. That moment solidified my passion for teaching – to ignite curiosity, nurture understanding, and empower students to discover the joy of learning.

While tutoring a student who initially struggled with math, I developed a unique teaching method using real-life examples. Witnessing their growing confidence and improved grades was incredibly rewarding. It solidified my belief that all students can thrive with the right support and guidance.

Here, blow your own trumpet. Highlight your work experiences. If you do not have any work experience, include any voluntary teaching assignments you took during your graduation.

Also highlight your soft skills—communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. These are crucial for effective teaching.

During my studies, I completed coursework in child development and educational psychology. Additionally, I actively volunteered at the Child-Health focus NGO where I assisted teachers with lesson planning and interacted with children of various age groups. Show you’ve done your homework. Mention something specific about the school’s philosophy or programs that resonate with you.

Explain how your skills will solve a problem in the school or align with their goals.

I particularly admire Chaos Ideal School’s emphasis on and its commitment to the Child purpose discovery program. My passion for igniting a love for distinctiveness in children perfectly aligns with this vision. How To Write Application Letter For Teaching Job In Nigeria

How To Write Application Letter For Teaching Job In Nigeria

In Nigeria, the education sector stands as a significant source of employment. Many young individuals aspire to build careers in teaching, driven by a passion for shaping future generations. However, securing a teaching job starts with a compelling application letter—a crucial step that should not be underestimated.

This article will guide you through crafting a powerful application letter for a teaching position, ensuring that you make a strong impression and increase your chances of landing the job.

Table of Contents

Preparing Before You Write

Before you start drafting your application letter, it’s essential to understand what schools are looking for in potential teachers. A strong application letter demonstrates that you possess the skills and qualities they value most. Here’s a look at the essential factors you should keep in mind:

Key Qualities Schools Seek in Teachers

  • Communication Skills : Effective communication is critical in teaching. Schools want teachers who can convey information clearly and interact well with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Subject Knowledge : It’s essential to have a solid understanding of the subject matter you’ll be teaching. Schools look for teachers with a solid understanding of the subjects they will teach.
  • Creativity : The ability to make learning engaging and enjoyable is a valued trait. Schools appreciate teachers who bring creativity into their lessons.
  • Passion : A genuine enthusiasm for teaching and a commitment to student success are essential. Passion for the role can frequently make or break the hiring decision.
  • Classroom Management : Schools seek teachers who can maintain an organized and disciplined classroom environment.
  • Curriculum Design : The capability to develop and deliver effective curriculum content is crucial.

In addition to these skills, schools are also interested in personal attributes such as self-discipline, integrity, and modesty. Your application letter is the perfect opportunity to highlight these strengths.

Steps to write an Application Letter for Teaching Job in Nigeria

1. begin with your address.

Start your letter by including your current address. This information helps the school determine your proximity and whether you meet any location preferences they might have. For example, if the job listing specifies a preference for candidates living in a particular area, your address should reflect that you fulfill this requirement.

2. Add the School’s Address

Research the school to find the correct address and the name of the person responsible for receiving applications. Including the accurate address and job title of the recipient shows that you have done your homework and are genuinely interested in the position. Place this information just below the salutation in your letter.

3. Address the Recipient Appropriately

Make a personal connection with the reader by addressing them correctly. If you can identify the name of the person handling the applications, make sure to address them directly. If not, at least identify their job title and gender to ensure your letter is addressed properly.

4. Start with a Strong Introduction

Be direct and concise in your opening paragraph. State clearly why you are writing and highlight your most significant qualifications. This approach helps capture the reader’s attention quickly without unnecessary pleasantries.

5. Highlight Your Experience, Qualifications, and Skills

This section is crucial. Focus on your most relevant educational qualifications and professional experiences. Instead of detailing every aspect of your educational and job history, focus on how your experiences and skills make you an ideal candidate for the teaching role.

Also, share your genuine enthusiasm for teaching and explain why this specific position excites you. Schools want to see that you are not only qualified but also genuinely interested in contributing to their educational environment.

6. Conclude Positively

Wrap up your letter on a positive note. Show appreciation for reviewing your application and convey your excitement about the chance to discuss the role in more detail. Indicate your willingness to attend an interview and provide your contact information, showing your eagerness for the role.

7. Provide Contact Information

Be sure to include your phone number and email address at the end of your letter. This makes it easy for the school to reach you for follow-up or an interview. If you’ve already included your contact details elsewhere in the letter, reiterate them here for convenience.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

1. grammatical errors.

Teachers must serve as role models for their students, which includes demonstrating strong communication skills. Errors in grammar can detract from your credibility and negatively impact your application. Proofread your letter carefully and consider having someone else review it to catch any mistakes.

2. Lack of Originality

Avoid copying application letters from others. An original letter reflects your personality and creativity, making you stand out as a candidate. Compose your letter yourself to highlight your unique qualifications and genuine enthusiasm.

3. Negativity and Criticism

Refrain from including negative comments about previous employers or institutions. Negative remarks can reflect poorly on you and may not resonate well with the reader. Focus instead on your positive attributes and what you bring to the role.

4. Dishonesty

Be truthful about your qualifications and experiences. Dishonesty can lead to embarrassment if discovered during an interview or background check. Be truthful in your application to establish trust with potential employers.

5. Unnecessary Details

Keep personal stories and life challenges out of your application letter. Keep the focus on your professional qualifications and how you can make a positive impact at the school. Providing too much personal information can make you seem desperate or self-serving.

Damilare Aanu

When you’re applying for a teaching job in Nigeria, your application letter is one of the most important pieces of your application package. This letter is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the school’s hiring committee and show them why you’re the perfect candidate for the job.

Formatting your application letter correctly is essential to making a good first impression. In this post, we’ll start by showing you the basic structure of an application letter. Then, we’ll give you some tips on how to make your letter stand out from the rest. Finally, we’ll show you how to close your letter and provide you with a sample letter to help get you started.

What to know before applying for a teaching job in Nigeria?

First of all, you should tailor your letter to the specific school where you’re applying. Make sure to research the school’s curriculum and teaching methods, and highlight any experience you have that would be relevant.

Also, be sure to spell everything correctly and use proper grammar. The hiring committee will definitely be looking for mistakes, and if your cover letter is filled with errors, they’ll probably assume you’re not capable of doing the job properly.

Finally, take the time to personalize it. Use the school’s name and mention how you heard about the opening. Mentioning someone who works at the school can also help your application stand out.

How to Format an Application Letter for Teaching Job in Nigeria

When you’re writing an application letter for a teaching job in Nigeria, it’s important to follow the basic format.

First, introduce yourself and state the position you’re applying for. Next, give a brief overview of your qualifications and experience. Make sure to highlight any teaching experience you have, as well as any other skills that would make you a great candidate for the job.

Your letter should be typed on a computer and should be formatted with single spacing and a 12-point font. The margins should be set at one inch on all sides. You can as well write your application letter.

Start by stating your name, address, and contact information in the top left corner of the page. In the top right corner, include the date.

The body of your letter should be divided into three paragraphs. The first paragraph should introduce yourself and state why you are interested in the position. The second paragraph should highlight your qualifications and experience, and the third paragraph should thank the employer for their time and provide information on how you can be contacted. Thank the reader for their time. Make sure to proofread your letter before sending it.

How to Make Your Application Letter Stand Out

When you’re applying for a teaching job in Nigeria, you want to make sure your application letter stands out. After all, there are plenty of other candidates who are vying for the same position. So how can you make sure your letter stands out from the rest?

To start with, make sure you list all of your qualifications and experience. Nigerian schools are looking for experienced teachers, so be sure to highlight all of your relevant experience.

Next, take the time to personalize your letter. Write a few sentences about why you’re interested in the position and why you think you would be a good fit for it. Mention the school’s website and how you came across the opening.

Here are eight ways to make sure your application letter stands out:

  • Use a professional email address.
  • Address the letter to a specific person.
  • Start with a personal introduction.
  • State the position you’re applying for and where you saw it advertised.
  • Outline your qualifications and experience.
  • Show that you’re familiar with the school’s values and mission statement.
  • Express your interest in the position and how you can contribute to the school.
  • Thank the recipient for their time and consideration, and include your contact information.

Finally, be sure to proofread your letter before sending it off. A well-written, error-free letter will help make your application stand out from the rest.

What to Include in the Body of an Application Letter for a Teaching Job in Nigeria

When you’re applying for a teaching job in Nigeria, the body of your application letter is extremely important. This is where you’ll highlight your qualifications and experience and make a case for why you’re the perfect candidate for the position.

When formatting your application letter, be sure to include the following:

  • The name of the school you’re applying to
  • The position you’re applying to
  • A brief introduction that explains why you’re interested in the job
  • Your qualifications and experience, including details on how they match the requirements of the position

After submitting your application, you should think about sending a follow-up email or making a phone call to inquire on the status of your application after you have done so.

15. Hold on to a Copy

Be sure to make and have a copy of your application letter for your own files.

What should a cover letter include when applying for a teaching position in Nigeria?

Writing an application letter for a job in teaching in Nigeria is somewhat different from writing an application letter for a career in other professions and jobs in Nigeria. This is because teaching necessitates excellent communication skills to make an impression on pupils and motivate them to learn more.

You can better describe yourself to potential employers with these guidelines for writing an effective application letter for a teaching position.

Additionally, you will be able to better match your one-of-a-kind abilities and experiences to the requirements of the teaching position that you are hoping to obtain.

If you would like to improve your chances of getting hired for a teaching position by writing a strong application letter, then you should use the following format:

1. Put the date, address, and contact information first.

It is essential to include your address and other contact information at the beginning of your letter of application for a teaching position. If you provide your contact information and a physical address in your application letter, it will be simple for potential employers to contact you.

Your application letter should include the following information regarding your address and other contact information in this format:

Adams Smith

081111111111

[email protected]

8 Gimbiya Street,

Williams Estates,

6th November, 2023.

You should also mention the address of the school following your own address. In addition to that, the application letter that you provide should look like this:

Top 21 Most Celebrated Festivals in Nigeria: Durbar, Eyo, Osun-Osogbo & More

Oluwabusola Oni,

Principal, Head Teacher, and/or School Administrator,

Beyond Extraordinary International.

Area 11, FCT.

2. Make sure the letter is addressed to the appropriate individual.

When searching for a teaching position in Nigeria, you must submit your cover letter and resume to the appropriate individual. Instead of beginning your application letter with “Dear Hiring Manager” or “To Whom It May Concern,” you should address the appropriate individual in the company immediately.

You need to do some research to figure out who the appropriate individual is to address your application letter to. You can get more information about the appropriate person to contact at the school by looking at the website.

You may also get in touch with the institution to find out who is in charge of recruitment there.

3. In the first paragraph, briefly summarize who you are and discuss where you heard about the open position.

In the beginning of your application letter, you should introduce yourself. You may begin by mentioning where you found the advertisement for the job, and then you could move on to describing the reasons you are interested in working in the role.

Discuss what it is about you that makes you the most qualified candidate for the job.

You can also provide facts about yourself that would provide the recruiter with a better insight of who you are and how you fit within the firm.

4. During the interview, discuss your educational background and any other qualifications, such as certificates, that make you the ideal candidate for the job.

Because teaching is a profession, one’s educational background and credentials are major factors in determining whether or not they will be hired for teaching positions. Every company is looking for someone who is qualified to teach and holds a valid teaching credential.

How to Restore Black Plastic on Your Car: Methods, Tips, & Tricks

It is a good idea for you to discuss your education in the cover letter you are sending to the employer because this will provide the employer with some context on your qualifications.

You may also mention your grades or the name of the educational establishment from which you graduated, particularly if it has a stellar reputation.

You might also talk about your interest in teaching and how that developed. The potential employer will understand who you are and how you will fit into the role.

5. Describe your background in education and the accomplishments you’ve attained in your career thus far.

When it comes to finding work as a teacher in Nigeria, experience is of the utmost significance. When you include examples of your previous teaching in your application letter, the employer will get a sense of your level of knowledge in the field of education.

You can talk about your experience so that the employer can see how far along you are in your career by looking at how far you’ve come.

Even if you don’t have experience teaching, you can still talk about the experience you do have that is relevant to teaching if you have any.

Discussing your experience in the company is something you can do, for instance, if you have previously worked in a corporate organization’s learning and development department.

Always focus on the aspects of your teaching experience that highlight your most proud achievements.

6. You may want to add your pedagogical methods and principles in your response.

It is beneficial that you have described how you prefer to instruct, and the principles you uphold as a teacher shed light on who you are as an educator. You should include specifics regarding how you developed the value you instill in your students and follow when instructing them.

You can also talk about some of the qualities you possess that make you an excellent educator and describe some of your skills. You can also make the employer realize the instruction method best suited for the category of pupils you intend to instruct if you want to increase your chances of getting hired.

7. You can end positively by providing a positive closure.

It is commendable that you sign off your letter in a gracious and upbeat manner by expressing gratitude to the reader for taking the time to consider you for a role.

You can offer information about how you plan to follow up, indicating whether you want to phone the hiring manager or send an email. You can also include any further comments you have about the position.

It is important that the concluding paragraph of your application letter impacts the person reading it, whether that person is a recruiter or an employer.

Conclusion: How to write an application letter in Nigeria

You can develop a well-crafted and compelling application letter for a teaching job in Nigeria by following these steps, which will increase your chances of being considered for the position if you are applying for a teaching job in Nigeria. We hope you have success with your job application!

How to write an Application Letter for a job in Nigeria

application letter for teaching job nigeria

If you are not sure how to write an application letter for a job in Nigeria, you came to the right place. Read our best tips and look through some useful samples.

First, let’s clarify the terms. Application documents differ from country to country. Whereas in Europe and North America a cover letter typically accompanies a resume, an application letter stands on its own and therefore, is more in-depth. Nigerian employers use an application letter and a cover letter interchangeably. In this article, we’ll take a brief look at how to write an effective application letter and provide you with a sample for guidance. Check out some amazing and detailed writing guides and samples of a job application letter in Nigeria to explore the topic more deeply.

So if you are applying to a company, and in the job description they request either an application letter or a cover letter, you should prepare a resume/CV accompanied by a piece of writing that succinctly summarizes your best selling points and professional accomplishments.

Thus, an application letter follows the rules of formal writing. But if you use our recommendations, you will grab the hiring manager’s attention and stand out from a barrage of clichéd and half-hearted pieces.

How to Write an Application Letter in Nigeria

Before you start writing, first read these important tips.

  • Always write an outline, as it will inform your letter of the structure.
  • Write a draft and carefully polish it.
  • Pay special attention to the first and last sentences as they can leave a lasting impression or prompt a hiring manager to toss your letter in the trash.
  • Tailor your application letter to the vacancy requirements or at least to the company’s policy and vision.
  • Use a friendly tone and avoid complaining or being chummy.
  • Make it concise.

If you are about to write your first application letter, it will take you some time to find all the information you need, write a draft, and finally polish it by proofreading and using our tips. But in the long run it will pay off.

Now let’s look in greater detail at the stages of writing an application letter or cover letter for a job in Nigeria.

Outline. At this stage just jot down the titles of the paragraphs and what comes to mind on the spur of the moment. For example, your outline can use the following application letter format in Nigeria:

  • Company’s address
  • Opening sentence ( strong leadership, customer service, optimizing expenditures )
  • Reasons for writing ( my experience fit their job description )
  • Your qualifications and what you have to offer the company
  • Summarize and thank

Draft. To avoid being bogged down by little things like googling the company’s address and the names of the hiring manager and recruiter, write the bulk of the letter first. You can hone your whole draft during the final stages.

Forbes career counselor Robin Ryan advises against writing a generic letter. The fact that you should not copy and paste a random example of a job application letter in Nigeria goes without saying.

In the first paragraph, talk about your best qualities and most amazing results. Treat it as a 30-second elevator speech. Be concise and use only meaningful phrases without cliches and banalities.

In the second paragraph, elaborate on your professional experience, keeping in mind the employer’s needs. List your most impressive projects and jobs. If you are entry-level, you can mention your education, including SATs score, certificates and diplomas, awards, publications, etc.

In the third paragraph, express your admiration of the company and emphasize your fit with the company’s values, mission, and job requirements.

Polish your draft. After you compose your rough draft, read and reread it several times, weeding out all platitudes, empty phrases, and clichés. Daniel Victor from the New York Times advises against stating the obvious. For example, there is no point in saying that you are a “hard-worker” or have a “creative mind.” First of all, such statements are overused. Second, your ability to work hard will be obvious from the work you do.

Work on the first and last sentences. You should put more thought and consideration into wording it than an average candidate cares to do. For example, Ryan recommends not to open up your letter with overused phrases like “I’m applying for a vacancy advertised on the company’s LinkedIn page.” An application letter is short, so don’t waste space on vapid, generic sentences that say virtually nothing about you.

It will take you some time and research to craft an attention-grabbing opener that will immediately tap into the employer’s need and demonstrate your qualities. Even if you are not responding to a specific job description and are writing a cold letter, try to analyze the job you are applying for. As soon as you grasp what the employer wants to see in an employee in this position, you will know how to address it.

If your aim is to demonstrate your skills and work results, you should write something similar to this opener: “Twice an award holder for my superb selling skills at the Finn Group, I can bring my proven expertise in sales and product knowledge to increase revenue for the Diana & Co. sales team.”

When finishing the letter, focus on what you bring to the company rather than what you can take from them. That is why ‘looking forward to seeing you in person’ is just a waste. Conclude your letter with a promise:

‘I welcome the chance to discuss your current varnish and paint sales objectives and show you how my innovations and solutions at the Finn Group can translate into growth for Diana & Co.”

“Could we meet next week to discuss how my skills in software sales, leadership, and database management can help grow your revenue by 15% per year?”

“I would welcome the chance to discuss the increased sales and reduced costs I would bring to your company.”

Tailor your application letter to the vacancy requirements. After the bulk of your application letter is written, keep polishing it. Check out whether your descriptions and mentioned skills fit the job descriptions that you can find on the company’s website or LinkedIn page. You need to show that you understand the company’s needs and job duties and are ready to deliver.

Proofread your letter. When you re-read your letter several times, make sure you conform to a Nigerian application letter format. At this stage, you should know the name of the hiring manager to go beyond a generic ‘Dear Sirs’ or ‘To whom it may.’ Shorten overly-wordy sentences and check each sentence for clarity. Zap out any slang or colloquial words. Your tone should be friendly and light yet formal.

Alicia Benton General Manager Bonbon Group 907 Better Street Los Angeles, CA 90003

Dear Ms. Benton,

After 5 years in leadership positions in two respectable and award-winning Canadian restaurants, I can offer my new employer improved customer service, efficient stock control, and innovative twists on classics.

I am aware that right now you have no vacancy for a sous-chef. But having looked through your previous job ads, I decided to let you know that I can be a perfect fit if your restaurant network is looking to branch out. I have the potential for quick growth, as I rose from line chef to sous chef within a few months and from sous chef to head chef within a year. With a focus on constant upskilling of team members and a rigorous hygiene routine, I also contributed to increased sales by 30% by finding two large clients for catering at large-scale events.

Obtaining the chef position at the Bonbon Group restaurant would be a challenge and a dream come true at the same time. The Bonbon Group is industry-famous for its performance, career opportunities, and utmost care for clients. I share these qualities and would love an opportunity to work for your success. Could we set up a meeting next week to discuss how my skills in kitchen management and leadership can help make your restaurant even more famous than it is now?

Best regards,

Alex Wind +1 510-401-1892 [email protected]

Wrapping up

As you can see, a clear-cut structure makes writing an application letter less difficult than one might fear. Yet, you will definitely need some preliminary research. If you feel paralized by the fear of a blank page, just start jotting down whatever comes to your mind. You can reword and polish it later. Or use the Internet, where you can find many online application letter builders that can provide you with an excellent template that you can edit and make more personalized.

Your application can be rather simple and concise and still land you a job interview if you aim to make it unique and avoid clichés. Do not go over one page. Proofread it many times. And treat it as an important piece of writing that has a pinch of your personality.

You can include some achievements from your previous companies in the opening, but make it concise.

  • Nigeria's standard sign-off for an application letter is "Yours faithfully."
  • That should be followed by your signature and then your full name, written in capital letters.
  • If you know the recipient's name, you can use a more personalized sign-off such as "Yours sincerely."
  • Sign-offs should always be written in full, without any abbreviations. That is necessary to show respect and professionalism to the recipient.
  • Always double-check your sign-off before sending your application letter, as any spelling mistakes could damage your chances of receiving a response.

How to write an application letter in Nigeria – Free Samples word/PDF

Most of the time, job application in Nigeria stands out when you include an application letter that expresses your interest in a job, stating your skills, competencies, and experience and showing the employer why you are the ideal potential hire to fill the job role.

This article is aimed at answering the following questions;

Do you need an application letter for employment?

An application letter for any position format?

An Application letter template that could be modified to suit the role you’re applying for?

In a scenario, when the job description does not include an application letter, such as some part-time jobs, factory jobs, or dispatch rider jobs writing one will help you highlight your skills and achievements at a glance and get the hiring manager’s attention.

What is a Job application Letter?

An application letter is a formal document written to a potential employer to express your interest in an open position. The job application letter highlights why you are a professional and an individual, showing your achievements and skills, and helping to get the attention of the hiring manager or recruiter responsible for reviewing applications.

This letter should be interesting enough to the recruiter or hiring manager, highlighting the key qualifications that make you a fit for the role, and creating thoughts in his heart to request an interview.

A job application letter also focuses on key competencies that set you apart from other applicants showing your familiarity with the role, and company to which you’re applying. This application letter shows how your personality, professional goals and aspirations align with the company’s goals.

Difference between a Cover Letter and an Application Letter.

  • In most cases the application letter and the cover letter perform almost the same function, they are different as an application letter is intended to stand alone, while a cover letter is usually sent alongside a CV or resume.
  • An application letter directly states your skills, competencies, personality, and goals as they align to the organization, while a cover letter highlights information on the CV or does not contain too much information about the job seekers because it is merely an introduction of the CV/resume
  • A cover letter contains a brief introduction that consists of three to four sentences about the potential hire/job seeker’s experience, skills, education, and accomplishments, stating clearly why the job seeker is the best candidate to fill the job. While an application letter may have an extensive introduction as it stands alone just like the CV.
  • A cover letter is written with the intention to capture the recruiter or hiring manager’s attention enough to review the CV or resume, thus inviting the job seeker for an interview. An application letter is mostly used by a job seeker to show interest in an unsolicited job.

Research & Understanding the company and Job Role : Research is a very important tool in writing an application letter, the first step is understanding the company and job role you’re applying for making it clear what you want to achieve, and all the things that you want your prospective employer to know that make you stand out as a potential hire.

Creating an outline of your application letter based on your research and understanding of the company will make it easy for you to write your application letter because you have the structure planned out already.

2. Decision on the Application format narration : Once you concluded the structure based on research, understanding of the company and job role for your application letter, based on you should create a rough draft of the application letter before writing the original one.

Once you’ve created a draft of your application letter don’t worry about grammatical errors and punctuation errors, this would aid in developing a prototype application letter.

3. Address Heading of the letter : Addressing the header of the application letter is important, but Salutation is one aspect of the application letter that the employer or hiring manager will likely see first as soon as they open the application letter and require it to be written with care.

Important salutation tips before you start writing your application letter:

  • Include a comma at the end of your salutation
  • Addressing more than one recipient, in the application process you should address the recipient as  ‘Dear Sirs/Madams’ .
  • If the recipient name of the application is unknown, you should address the hiring manager or recruiter as  ‘Dear Sir/Madam’.

 4.  Address the letter to the HR, hiring manager & recruiter : How you address the hiring manager or recruiter is important as he/she can sense your tone from the way that you write. Treating the recipients with respect when you are writing your application letter, be polite and use formal language when you are writing not to using any slang or ambiguous words.

5. Introduction describing your interest: Describing your interest you should be brief as much as you can giving your prospective employers reasons why are the best candidate for the job role.

Due to the high number of applications Employers receive especially in Nigeria, they may not be able to spend time reading your application letter. Your application letter stands out when you mention the purpose of your letter in the first paragraph because this is what the recruiter or hiring manager will likely look at first.

6. Describe your relevant experience and qualifications :   Tailoring your application to the job and company by describing your relevant experience and qualification for that role you are applying for and the company will give your prospective employer the mindset that you are passionate about the job and the company and helping the company achieve their set goals and objectives, offering value.

Prospective hires or recruiters look forward to hiring people who are offering value, with the right skills, competence and passion for the job. Tailoring your application letter with these criteria may be all you need to land the job of your dreams.

7. Include key aspects that stand you as an applicant: It is important to include key aspects that stand you out as an applicant, unless a handwritten letter is requested, you should send a typed and computer-generated document. Typing your document clearly using these outlines will help you present a well-aligned, clear, and easy-to-read document.

It’s important to use Quality Paper If you are sending a hard copy application letter to the employer’s office, make sure you use a good and quality paper.

Proofreading your application letter repeatedly will help you see grammatical or typographical errors that you would need to fix before you send your application letter. You can read your application letter out loud to yourself to see some errors.

 10.  Close the letter : When you are sending your application letter to the hiring manager or recruiter, you should make sure that your tone matches the tone of the letter. A formal application letter closing note should be polite, courteous, and respectful.

These are common closing that you can use to end your application letter:

  • ‘Faithfully Yours’
  • ‘Sincerely’ or your ‘faithfully’
  • ‘Your Truly’
